Five Large White pigs of 62.2 +/- 1.4 kg mean body weight were fitted with permanent catheters in the portal vein and carotid artery and with an electromagnetic flow probe around the portal vein to study the absorption of volatile fatty acids (VFA) by measuring the concentration of these metabolites in hourly blood samples, and by determining the portal blood flow rate for a period of 12 h after intake of a single 800-g meal (6% crude fiber) preceded by 12 or 24 h of fasting. The portal concentration of VFA mixture always highly exceeded the arterial concentration. The arterial concentrations of propionic, butyric, valeric and isovaleric acids were nearly null, accounting for an almost complete uptake of these VFA by the liver. Acetic acid also was taken up, but to a lesser extent. Total VFA absorption during 12 h was 64% higher (P less than .05) after 12 h (1,160 +/- 100 mmol/12 h) than after 24 h of preprandial fasting (740 +/- 83 mmol/12 h). It increased after the meal (P less than .05) from 82.3 +/- 7.8 mmol/h between the first and fourth hour to 107.8 +/- 7.5 mmol/h between the fifth and tenth hour when the preprandial fasting lasted 12 h; a nonsignificant increase also was found when fasting prior to the meal lasted 24 h. The composition of the VFA mixture was not modified by the length of preprandial fasting. Five sets of littermate gilts (8.2 +/- .19 kg average initial weight) were randomly assigned within litter to a 16% protein corn-soybean meal basal diet (B), B + .308% neomycin, or B + 55 ppm carbadox. Each set was equally-fed individually once daily for 16 d in metabolism cages and 5 d in calorimeters. The average daily feed intake for 21 d was 276 g. Oxygen consumption and CO2 production were measured during an 8- to 24-h postprandial period on d 16, 19, 20 and 21, and during a 32- to 48-h postprandial period after the d 21 feeding. Pigs were killed 50 h postprandially for gastrointestinal tract measurements. Dietary supplementation of antimicrobial agents (neomycin and carbadox) resulted in improvements (P less than .01) in daily gain and efficiency of feed utilization and lower (P less than .05) small intestinal mass in pigs. There was no difference (P greater than .05) in daily gain, feed efficiency or small intestinal mass between pigs fed neomycin- or carbadox-supplemented diets. Whole-animal fasting O2 consumption and CO2 production measured during the 8- to 24-h or 32- to 48-h postprandial period were not affected (P greater than .05) by the supplementation or the source of dietary antimicrobial agents. 1. Two experiments were carried out to determine the heat production associated with food intake in laying hens allowed access to food for one (experiment 2) or two hours (experiment 1) daily. 2. In experiment 1, heat production in the fed state was measured for two successive days after 46 h of food deprivation. The rate of heat production in the fasting state was measured from 47 to 69 h after feeding. 3. In experiment 2, heat production was measured at 4 fixed food intakes: 100, 70, 40 and 0 g/bird. Heat production associated with food intake, eating activity, net availability of ME and maintenance ME requirement was estimated. 4. Heat production after 46 h of food deprivation did not differ from that after 22 h of deprivation. In the hens receiving 100 g of food, heat production reached the pre-feeding level by 20 h after eating; the hens with lower food intakes reached the pre-feeding level more rapidly. It is suggested that the heat production associated with feeding had been eliminated by 22 h after eating. 5. Heat production associated with feeding was 16% of ME intake. Because the total energy cost of eating activity was only 0.8% of ME intake, the heat production associated with food intake in the limited-access hens came mainly from the effects of digestion, absorption and metabolism of the ingesta. 6. The heat production of 4 rats was measured by means of indirect calorimetry over 20 h/d at intervals of 4 min at ambient temperatures of 30, 25, 20 and 15 degrees C and feed intakes of 0, 4, 8 and 12 g/d. When the rats were hungry, their heat production was reduced by between 8 and 44 kJ/kg LW0.75.d. Feed intake increased heat production by between 54 and 102%. In the temperature range between 20 and 30 degrees C the rats required 0.36 kJ or 2.4% resp. of the metabolizable energy for the intake of 1 g feed. At 15 degrees C the corresponding values were 0.48 kJ or 3.2% resp. The activity-conditioned quota of heat production was estimated as 31 +/- 10%. In the temperature range of between 30 and 25 degrees C thermoregulatory heat production amounted to 5 and that in the temperature range between 25 and 15 degrees C to 20 kJ/kg LW0.75.d.K. No compensation of thermoregulatory heat by heat from increase of energy intake could be proved in the temperature range between 15 and 30 degrees C.  相似文献

Changes in the electric resistance of the vaginal mucus were monitored in a large pig herd at 4-h intervals with a heat detector (Hauptner, Federal Republic of Germany) in multiparous sows (n = 16; litter size = 11.4 +/- 2.9) that showed a positive standing test and conceived. The initial value of resistance was 74.4 +/- 7.4 ohms. In 36 h this value gradually increased to 93.6 +/- 7.6 ohms. One to 2 h after the artificial inseminations (AI) lower resistance values were obtained, though the difference was not statistically significant. In the second part of the experiment 73.9% and 82.7% of the gilts (n = 92) and multiparous sows (n = 98) conceived, respectively, with an average litter size of 9.6 +/- 2.2 and 11.0 +/- 2.7, respectively. The conception rate of animals that immediately before AI had vaginal mucus resistance values between 75 and 90 ohms was about 20% higher. The only exception were 8 multiparous sows which had an average vaginal mucus resistance of 70 +/- 4.6 ohms after the first insemination. Litter size was also the biggest in sows with vaginal mucus resistance between 75 and 90 ohms. This difference was statistically significant for the multiparous sows. The heat detector is considered to be a useful complement to conventional methods of oestrus detection.  相似文献

The hCG induced ovulation in sows was studied by use of ultrasonography, and an investigation of the development and diversity of the zygotes/embryos was performed at 24 h after ovulation. Crossbred sows (N = 48) were weaned (day 0) and checked for heat twice daily from day 3 onwards. From day 4, the ovaries were transrectally scanned twice daily. On day 4, the sows were given an injection of 750 iu hCG i.m. and inseminated 27 +/- 2 h (X +/- SD) and 38 +/- 1 h later. From 38 to 48 h after the hCG injection, the ovaries were scanned at 60 to 90 min intervals. At 24 h after ovulation the oviducts were surgically flushed in 18 sows. Out of the 48 sows, 34 showed heat at 12-36 h after the hCG-treatment and 14 showed heat before the hCG treatment. In the former group of sows, 20 (59%) ovulated within the interval of 38 to 48 h after the hCG treatment, and the follicular size immediately before ovulation was 7.8 +/- 0.6 mm. Among the sows which showed heat before hCG treatment only 7 (50%) ovulated within the above interval and the preovulatory follicle size was larger (8.3 +/- 0.5, p < 0.05) than in the former group of sows, which showed heat after the hCG treatment. The flushing of 18 sows yielded a total of 243 ova, 70 (29%) 1-cell stages, 160 (66%) 2-cell stages and 13 (5%) 4-cell stages. A pronounced difference in the degree of variation in embryonic development was seen between sows: 4 animals yielded 1- to 4-cell stages, one exclusively 2-cell stage. In conclusion, the control of ovulation in sows by hCG treatment will affect the follicular growth and the exact timing of ovulation can not always be relied on. It is strongly recommended to use ultrasonography to monitor the time of ovulation if this parameter is important. Ova recovered at 24 +/- 1 h after the median time of ovulation revealed a pronounced diversity (1- to 4-cell stage) within sows. No obvious relation with this embryonic diversity and the follicular size at ovulation was seen in these data.  相似文献

The effect of temperature (23 or 33 degrees C) and feeding level on components of energy balance was studied in seven groups of individually reared Piétrain x (Landrace x Large White) littermate piglets. Within each litter, one pig was reared at 23 degrees C and given a predefined feeding level close to ad libitum (23AL pigs), one was reared at 33 degrees C and also fed close to ad libitum (33AL), and one was reared at 23 degrees C and pair-fed to the 33AL pig (23PF). Piglets of one litter were acclimated during 2 to 4 wk to their experimental temperature in temperature-controlled rooms before being transferred (one per week) to a respiration chamber for measurement of nitrogen and energy balances. The average initial BW was 22.4 kg. The data on O2 consumption, CO2 production, and physical activity were collected over seven consecutive days and used to calculate total heat production (HPtot) and its components: fasting heat production (FHP), heat production due to physical activity (HPact), and thermic effect of feed (TEF). A preliminary trial was conducted in which heat production was measured in three piglets according to a Latin square design at 23, 25, and 27 degrees C. Total heat production was, but activity-free heat production was not, affected by temperature, and no firm conclusions could be drawn as to whether 23 degrees C was within the thermoneutral zone of fed piglets. In Trial 2, the combination of increased temperature and reduced feed intake resulted in a 20% lesser heat production in 33AL than in 23AL pigs. This was due to a reduction in both TEF (-39%) and FHP (0.642 vs 0.808 MJ x d(-1) x kg BW-0.60). Despite the shorter duration of standing activity, HPact was slightly higher at 33 degrees C, probably due to hyperventilation at this temperature. With similar feeding levels (23PF vs 33AL), HPtot and activity-free heat production were less at 33 degrees C and energy retention as protein (+6%) and fat (+31%) was increased. Because HPact was similar for both treatments, the greater energy retention for 33AL seemed to be due to a greater utilization of feed energy or to a reduced maintenance requirement (i.e., reduced FHP). However, the type of stress imposed on 23PF and 33AL pigs was different and may have affected energy metabolism. The results suggest that the reduction in heat production of piglets at high ambient temperatures is caused by a reduction in voluntary feed intake and differences in energetic efficiency. The mechanisms for the lesser efficiency at 23 degrees C compared to 33 degrees C (at the same level of feed intake) remain unclear.  相似文献

Four pigs (59-65 kg live weight) were labelled over a period of 10 days with 15N in the feeding of a fishmeal diet (1), a fishmeal diet + partly hydrolysed straw meal (2), a horse bean diet (3) and a horse bean diet + partly hydrolysed straw meal (4). After a 24-hour fasting the animals were provided with simple cannulae in the upper part of the small intestines. After a fasting period of 24 h all four pigs received a 14C-leucine injection and the cannula secretion was collected in the subsequent 24 h. After the feeding of the diets without straw meal supplement (1 and 3) there were distinct differences in the secretion in comparison with the feeding with straw meal supplements (2 and 4) despite the long fasting period (48-72 h). 14C-activity could already be detected in the TCA-precipitable fraction of the secretion after 3-6 min of the injection in 1 and 3 but only 20 to 25 min after the 14C-leucine injection in 2 and 4. The specific 14C-leucine activity of the TCA-soluble fraction of the secretion was, after the straw meal supplementation to the fish meal diet, 15 times higher 25 min after the 14C-leu-injection, 25 times higher after 70 min, 36 times after 2 h and 1.8 times after 4 h than without straw meal supplementation. For all four diets a specific correlation (r = 0.96) could be ascertained between the increase of 14C-activity/mg N in the TCA-soluble fraction and the increasing crude fibre content in the diet between 25 and 180 min after the injection. Furthermore, a distinctly decreased N-secretion/h could be ascertained (correlation coefficient r = 0.84) with the increasing crude fibre content in the diet. The influence of the crude fibre on the parameters mentioned is seen in the changed osmotic conditions in the secretion, which may be caused by the changed regulation by hormones of the gastro-intestinal tract. The atom-% 15N' in both TCA-fractions of the secretion underwent big rhythmic variations, which is explained by different ratios of the components pancreatic juice, bile, and intestinal juice.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of methylprednisolone treatment on serum leptin and ghrelin levels in healthy dogs (n=40). After 14 h of fasting, the dogs were injected intramuscularly with saline (control group) or methylprednisolone (1, 5 or 10mg/kg). Blood samples were collected prior to (baseline) and 2, 3, 4, 8, 12 and 24h subsequent to the treatments. Serum leptin and ghrelin were measured by radioimmunoassay. The mean baseline serum leptin and ghrelin were 2.5+/-0.1 ng/mL (n=40) and 35.0+/-2.1 pg/mL (n=40), respectively. In the control dogs, serum leptin, but not ghrelin levels showed a significant fluctuation during the 24h observation period. Serum leptin increased significantly (p<0.05-0.01) between 2 and 12h after 1mg/kg of methylprednisolone. Serum leptin levels showed biphasic response to 5mg/kg of methylprednisolone: its level decreased to 1.9+/-0.1 ng/mL (p<0.01) at 2h and increased at 12h (2.6+/-0.1 ng/mL) (p<0.01). In response to 10mg/kg of methylprednisolone, serum leptin levels decreased significantly (p<0.01) for 24h. Serum ghrelin levels decreased to 19+/-5 pg/mL at 2-3h (p<0.01) or increased to 87+/-18 pg/mL at 3-8h (p<0.05-0.01) after 1mg/kg of methylprednisolone or 10mg/kg of methylprednisolone, respectively. Serum ghrelin levels did not change at any time point during 24h observation period after 5mg/kg of methylprednisolone. There was a significant (p<0.001) inverse correlation (r=-0.635) between serum leptin and ghrelin levels. In conclusion, we found that methylprednisolone increases or decreases serum leptin and ghrelin levels depending upon its dose and there is a negative correlation between serum leptin and ghrelin levels after methylprednisolone administration.  相似文献

In 3 experiments young broiler chickens were supplied on various feeding levels in the growth range between 200 and 2500 g live weight (2.8 and 2.0 in experiment 1, 2.8, 2.3 and 1.8 in experiments 2 and 4, maintenance = feeding level 1.0). In experiments 1 and 2 short-time measurings (30 min) of heat production by means of gas exchange were made at 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 g live weight in the post-absorptive state and on the maintenance level of feeding. In experiment 1 the heat production of the restrictively fed chickens was in 3 out of the 4 stages of development studied significantly lower by 10-14% than that of the intensively fed ones. In experiment 2 such an effect could not be observed. Fed on the level of energy maintenance, broilers weighing approximately 2000 g (experiment 3) did not show a significant influence of the sex on heat production as a result of 30-minute gas exchange measurings in the post-absorptive state. In experiment 4 24-hour measurings of the energy metabolism were carried out in the growth development in periods of feeding on the maintenance level by means of indirect calorimetry. In the live weight range between 0.9 and 1.3 kg there was only a low, non-significant decrease of the energy maintenance requirement of 4-6% of the highly restrictively fed chickens in comparison to the intensively fed ones. After continued feed restriction (live weight range 1.7-2.2 kg) an energy maintenance requirement reduced by 17% was measured. In an analogously arranged experiment with 24-hour energy metabolism measurings (experiment 5) male Wistar rats in the growth range between 70 and 280 g were supplied on the feeding levels 1.8 and 1.4 resp. In all three periods studied on the feeding level maintenance--beginning at 140-150 g live weight--the highly restrictively fed animals showed a slightly reduced energy maintenance requirement by 8%, 3% (non-significant) and 6% in comparison with the intensively fed animals.  相似文献

The biological and imaging characteristics of technetium-99m imidodiphosphate (Tc99m-IDP) were measured in 4 horses once and in 1 horse twice. All computational results are expressed with 95.5% (mean +/- 2 SD) confidence limits. The clearance half-time of the radiopharmaceutical from the blood was 29.6 +/- 2.3 min. The percentage of the administered dose circulating in the whole-blood volume at 4 h was 3.9 +/- 0.8%. The Tc99m-IDP radioactivity confined at the plasma fraction of the whole blood at 4 h was 85.3 +/- 1.6%. At 8 h, approximately 45 +/- 16% of the dose administered had been excreted via the urine. The mean effective half-time of the urine activity concentration was 1.1 +/- 0.3 h. The ratios of bone-to-soft tissue activities increased with time postinjection. Urinary radioactivity concentration measurements and radiation dose rate measurements immediately behind the elbows were analysed and it was determined that 24 h is an appropriate radioisolation time for mature horses administered 3.7 GBq (100 mCi) Tc99m-IDP.  相似文献

为了研究我国黑白花奶牛的能量代谢规律,本试验用传统开路式呼吸面具装置对4头空怀干奶的成年黑白花母牛不同季节的绝食代谢产热量进行了4次测定,结果表明,我国黑白花空怀干奶成年母牛在中立温度区附近的绝食代谢产热量为72.052Kcal/kgw~(0.75)24hr.,在中立温度区以外,随气温的升高和降低绝食代谢产热量都有不同程度的增加,基本与国外黑白花奶牛的能量代谢规律一致,与我国奶牛饲养标准中的参数相符。  相似文献

Pharmacokinetic characteristics of the anticonvulsant phenobarbital were studied in seven pony and two Thoroughbred foals aged between four and 10 days. A single, 20 mg/kg bodyweight (bwt) dose of phenobarbital was given intravenously over 25 mins and the serum concentrations of the drug were measured using an EMIT AED assay (coefficient of variation 1.37 per cent at 30 micrograms/ml, n = 7). Phenobarbital elimination was found to follow first order kinetics. The mean (+/- sd) peak phenobarbital serum concentration was 18.6 +/- 2.1 micrograms/ml at 1 h after initiation of infusion with a mean (+/- se) half-life of 12.8 +/- 2.1 h. The mean (+/- se) volume of distribution was 0.86 +/- 0.026 litres/kg bwt and mean (+/- se) total body clearance was 0.0564 +/- 0.0065 litres/kg bwt/h. Sedation was noticed 15 to 20 mins after the beginning of infusion and lasted for up to 8 h. All foals could be aroused and could walk although they were ataxic for the first 1 to 2 h. A degree of delayed hyperexcitability occurred 3 to 8 h after infusion. In equine neonatal seizure disorders it is recommended to use a loading dose of 20 mg/kg bwt of phenobarbital, followed by maintenance doses of 9 mg/kg bwt at 8 h. With this regimen, average steady state serum phenobarbital concentrations should range between approximately 11.6 and 53 micrograms/ml. Phenobarbital serum concentrations should be monitored following the loading dose and 24 h after initiating the maintenance doses to check that levels remain within the suggested (human) therapeutic range of 15 to 40 micrograms/ml.  相似文献

Variation among twin beef cattle in maintenance energy requirements   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The genetic variation in energy expenditures of cattle at fasting (FHP) and maintenance (MEm) was determined by using 12 pairs of monozygous twins at 20 mo of age. The pairs were of two breed types, eight Angus x Hereford (three steers, five heifers) and four Barzona x Hereford (three steers, one heifer). The heifers were 132 +/- 13 d pregnant at the time of measurement. The pairs were fed at 1.15 x maintenance energy requirements for a minimum of 30 d prior to heat production (HP) measurements in dual indirect respiration calorimetry chambers. The diet fed was cracked corn:alfalfa hay (45:55) with a determined ME of 2.47 +/- .02 Mcal/kg DM. This diet was fed individually for 7 d prior to and during two consecutive 22-h HP measurements. The animals then were fasted for 2 d and fasting heat production measurements (FHP) were made on d 3 and 4 of the fast. Metabolizable energy required for MEm was calculated iteratively by assuming a semi-log relationship between HP and metabolizable energy intake. There were no differences (P greater than .10) in measured energy expenditures due to different breed type. The FHP and efficiency of ME use for MEm (Km) were similar between sexes, although heifers had lower (P less than .025) MEm than steers. Twin pair effects were detected for FHP (P less than .005) and MEm (P less than .05) but not for Km. Broad sense heritability estimates were calculated as the intraclass correlation between members of monozygous twin pairs. A series of experiments was conducted to validate the CO2 entry rate technique (CERT) for prediction of heat production (HP) of sheep. Finnsheep cross wethers were used. Carbon dioxide production was estimated by continuous infusion of NaH14CO3 intraperitoneally and collection of saliva. Times required for 14C to equilibrate with the body CO2-bicarbonate pool and excretion of 14C in feces and urine were determined in four wethers (45.5 +/- 1.7 kg) infused for 3 d. Retention of radioactivity was measured for wethers (29.0 +/- 1.9 kg) slaughtered 3 h and 3, 10 and 15 d postinfusion. Using an indirect respiration calorimeter, CO2 production estimates were compared to values derived by CERT for six wethers (45.0 +/- .4 kg) fed at low, medium and high levels of intake. Further data on feed intake level and CO2 production were obtained from 24 wethers in two weight groups (29.5 +/- 1.1 and 42.3 +/- 1.4 kg) fed at three levels of intake. From 12 to 20 h were required for equilibration of NaH14CO3 and the body CO2-bicarbonate pool. Radioactivity of the saliva samples declined rapidly after cessation of infusion. Fecal and urine excretion of 14C was minimal. No detectable 14C was found in tissue of animals slaughtered after CERT. Estimates of daily CO2 production did not differ between the calorimetry and CERT measurements (20.6 vs 20.3 liters/kg body weight .75). Although feed intake levels were different, HP and respiratory quotients (RQ) did not differ between the methods. The influence of protein in exchange for carbohydrates on the energy maintenance requirement was studied with nearly fully-grown rats at ambient temperatures between 33 and 21 degrees C. The levels of the crude protein content were 10, 25, 40 and 70%. At an ambient temperature of 33 and 30 degrees C energy maintenance requirement increased with the growing protein content in the feed. At a temperature of 30 degrees C the following values of energy maintenance requirement were measured in the sequence of the protein levels mentioned: 330 +/- 11, 347 +/- 18, 360 +/- 15 and 399 +/- 15 kJ metabolizable energy/kg live weight 0.75 X d. The occurring changes largely coincide with the expected values calculated from the efficiency of the ATP synthesis in the oxidative catabolization of protein and carbohydrates. At ambient temperatures of less than 30 degrees C, thermogenous effects after the exchange of protein versus carbohydrates could only be observed partly or not. 30 degrees C in feeding on the maintenance level and 33 degrees C in the state of hunger are estimated as the lower critical temperatures. Below the critical temperatures down to 24 degrees C heat production increased less per 1 degree C temperature decrease both in hungry and fed rats than in the temperature range between 24 and 21 degrees C. By the decrease of the ambient temperature from 24 to 21 degrees C the heat production of the hungry or fed rats increased by 39 or 33 kJ/degrees C X kg live weight 0.75 X d.  相似文献

The number and duration of suckling incidences were recorded during eight 24-h observation periods in a herd of spring-calving Polled Hereford and percentage Simmental cows in 1980 and 1981. The average number of suckling events per calf in 24 h was 5.0 +/- .1 and the average time spent suckling in 24 h was 46 +/- 1 min. Peaks in suckling activity occurred from 0500 to 0700, 1000 to 1300 and 1700 to 2100 h. The most suckling events in a single hour occurred between 0500 and 0600 h and the least between 2200 and 2300 h. Day of the estrous cycle did not influence the number or duration of suckling events. Cows that gave more milk nursed less frequently and heavier calves suckled less frequently (P less than .01). Age, breed and sex of the calf did not influence (P greater than .1) suckling frequency or duration.  相似文献

为了研究我国黑白花生长母牛的能量代谢规律和探讨运动对奶牛能量代谢的影响,笔者用传统开路式面具装置对6、9、12、15、18月龄(各3头)的青年母牛在中立温度区内进行了绝食代谢试验,并对3头22月龄青年母牛运动状态下的产热量进行了测定。结果表明,黑白花青年母牛中立温度区内的绝食代谢产热量FHP(kcal/24hr)=277.5w~(0.653);不同速度水平行走的能量消耗分别为0.3316±0.0101cal/kgm(V=0.95±0.04米/秒)和0.4625±0.0462cal/kgm(V=1.54±0.03米/秒)。  相似文献

1. The present study was conducted to determine if detrimental effects of high temperature on broiler performance could be overcome by short-term fasting and to examine the effect of food withdrawal on the responses of two commercial strains (S1 and S2). 2. An experimental design was used with three feeding groups and two strains. Birds in the control (C) group were fed ad libitum during the experimental period (0 to 6 weeks), while feed was withdrawn in the other groups between 10:00 and 16:00 h during weeks 5 and 6 (F1) or week 6 (F2), respectively. After standard brooding for the first 3 weeks temperature and humidity varied according to outside climate between 4 and 6 weeks of age. 3. Feeding strategy significantly affected body weight at week 6 (BW6) and daily weight gain during week 6 (DWG5-6). F2 gave the best results in BW6 and DWG5-6. Strain effect was significant on DWG4-5 and DWG5-6; S1 had higher DWG4-5 and S2 gained more at the last stage. S1C broilers had greater BW6 than S2C but the S2 strain gave a better response to short-term fasting compared with S1 and this resulted in significant strain by feeding interaction effect on BW6 and DWG5-6. 4. It was shown that short-term fasting was an effective method for controlling rectal temperature (RT) of broilers at 5 and 6 weeks of age. 5. Total food consumption (FCO-6), food conversion ratio (FCRO-6), mortality, and carcase characteristics were not affected by short-term fasting in the experimental conditions. 6. In conclusion, it can be recommended that broiler producers may practise 6 h of fasting during the hot period of the day without any adverse effect on slaughter weight and FCR when the birds are close to the average slaughter weight and a heat wave is expected. Strain differences in RT measurements also indicate the importance of choosing strains to be used in hot and warm climate conditions with attention to the thermoregulation ability of broilers.  相似文献

An open-circuit indirect respiration calorimetry system for the collection of long-term metabolic heat production data for medium and small animals is described. The system is designed for use with small ruminants, but it has the capacity for measuring heat production in nonruminant species up to 150 kg. The system consists of an internal climatic control system, air flow control and volume measuring system, and gas analyzers for O2, CO2 and CH4. Carbon dioxide recovery checks of the four chambers produced recovery values ranging from 96.73 to 100.89%. The actual mean fasting heat production measured for 12 wether sheep was 63.13 kcal/kg.75 +/- .83. The total estimated cost of four chambers and the associated instrumentation was less than $17,000 in 1984.  相似文献
