Syrian hamsters developed spontaneous renal lesions that resembled those of arteriolar nephrosclerosis in man, and differed from other spontaneously occurring or virus-induced renal diseases in other rodent species. Morphologic changes were mainly degenerative with little cellular exudation and were associated with histologic changes in the intrarenal vasculature. The renal lesions were progressive, often fatal and sometimes were complicated by glomerular amyloidosis with the nephrotic syndrome and uremia. Endstage kidneys often had fibrinoid necrosis of intrarenal arterioles and thus resembled lesions characteristic of the malignant phase of human essential hypertension. Fibrinoid necrosis of small arterioles was common in the uterus, ovaries or testes of affected animals; it was less frequent in mesenteric or coronary vessels. Cardiac thrombosis, often involving the left atrium or left atrioventricular valves, also was common. Changes occurred earlier and often were more severe in females than in males. This disease was a major cause of morbidity and mortality and hampered life-span studies.  相似文献

A disease in wild living roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) caused by acid-fast bacteria is described. The morphological and cultural properties of these bacteria agree closely with corresponding properties of Mycobact. johnei.Enlarged lymph nodes, especially mesenteric lymph nodes with greyish-yellow necroses, were the most prominent macroscopic lesions. No intestinal lesions were present. The histopathological picture of the lymph nodes resembled mostly lesions which can occur in paratuberculous sheep and goats. The epithelioid cells contained masses of acid-fast bacteria. Such rods were also demonstrated in the intestinal villi. The acid-fast bacteria could be isolated from the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleens, bone marrow, mammary gland and also from the lymph nodes of other organs. The organism did not produce tuberculosis in guinea pigs. Intravenous injections into hens and rabbits resulted in miliary nodules resembling those of tuberculosis in the livers and spleens of the hens, and in joint and tendon sheath lesions in the rabbits. Microscopically the lesions mostly resembled those in paratuberculosis. One of the strains which was inoculated intravenously into two calves caused no lesions. The results of the allergy tests and serological blood tests in one animal indicate that infection with Mycobact. johnei cannot be excluded.A goat which was inoculated in the same manner and with the same strain as the calves died after six weeks. Miliary epithelioid cell granulomas in the liver, spleen, kidneys, bone marrow of long bones and in the submucosa of the ileum, as well as patchy infiltration of epithelioid cells in, among others, the mesenteric lymph nodes were observed on microscopic examinations.By intravenous infection the disease could be reproduced in a roe deer (fawn) (Gapreolus capreolus L.). The animal died nine weeks after the infection, and during the last two days before death it had a profuse diarrhoea. Masses of short acid-fast bacteria in clumps were present in the faeces. Nor in the experimental animal did macroscopic intestinal lesions occur. Enlarged villi infiltrated with epithelioid cells containing acid-fast bacteria were demonstrated by histological examination. The acid-fast bacteria could be recovered, but only on the Taylor/ Finlayson medium, from all experimental animals except the guinea pigs. Concerning the experimental calves, acid-fast bacteria were recovered from only one of them and then nearly three years after the infection. The acid-fast bacteria did not reduce nitrate. They showed positive neutral red reactions and were sensitive to isoniazid in a concentration of 2.5 µg per ml medium after three weeks’ incubation. The possibility that the isolated acid-fast bacteria and the lesions caused by them might be avian tubercle bacilli and avian tuberculosis has been discussed by the author. He does not, however, find any relevant reason for such an assumption. The author considers that the bacteria and the lesions exhibit the greatest similarity to Mycobact. johnei and paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease). On account of the organism’s pathogenicity for hens and rabbits, and necroses in the course of the disease, the author suggests that these bacteria possibly constitute a variety of the classic bovine Mycobact. johnei, different from the pigmented and the Icelandic varieties.  相似文献

ANERGY TO TUBERCULIN IN BEEF CATTLE   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
SUMMARY Various aspects associated with anergy to tuberculin were investigated in a total of 78 tuberculous cattle. Forty-six (59%) had single lesions and 32 (41%) had multiple lesions. Forty-three (55.1%) had lesions in the lungs or associated lymph nodes and 23 (29.5%) showed multiple involvement of these tissues. Nine anergic cattle had generalised tuberculosis. Histological examination of lesions from 38 animals showed that the majority were of the progressive type.  相似文献

In this further study, an exhaustive investigation into the value of the bentonite flocculation test in detecting tuberculosis in cattle was made on a group of 358 cattle, with known intradermal (ID) tuberculin reactions and with or without tuberculosis lesions. Bentonite sensitized with human old tuberculin (OT) and a purified BCG carbohydrate fraction (BCG-F1) were used.

In the group of 126 cows with tuberculosis lesions, 113 were positive to the tuberculin ID test and there were also 113 positive reactions to the flocculation test using OT sensitized bentonite. Only 62 were positive using the BCG-F1 sensitized bentonite.

Out of the 232 animals with no visible lesions, 114 reacted positively to the tuberculin ID test, 148 had a titer to the flocculation test using OT sensitized bentonite and 70 were positive when using BCG-F1 sensitized bentonite.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the prevalence, type, and prognosis of ocular lesions associated with leishmaniasis in dogs. One hundred and five dogs (24.4% of all cases of leishmaniasis diagnosed during the study period) had ocular or periocular leishmaniasis, and 16 dogs (15.2% of ocular cases) had only ocular lesions and systemic signs were not apparent. Anterior uveitis was the most common manifestation and other prevalent findings included blepharitis and keratoconjunctivitis. Several distinct variations of eyelid lesions were seen including a dry dermatitis with alopecia, diffuse blepharedema, cutaneous ulceration, and discrete nodular granuloma formation. In some cases with keratoconjunctivitis, corneal lesions clinically resembled nodular granulomatous episclerokeratitis. Twenty-seven of the 34 cases with ocular lesions had improvement in signs following systemic antiprotozoal and topical anti-inflammatory therapy, although many cases with anterior uveitis required long-term topical therapy. Response of ocular signs correlated highly with overall, systemic response to therapy. Ophthalmic manifestations of systemic leishmaniasis are common in the dog, and this disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of most adnexal and anterior segment ocular inflammatory lesions in dogs in endemic areas.  相似文献

Of 75 Indian water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) examined, 14 6-year-old or older buffaloes had early atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary arteries. These lesions resembled fatty streaks seen in man. Ageing changes and gross and microscopic features of the fatty streaks in the vessels resembled those described in the corresponding arteries of man.  相似文献

Bluetongue virus-induced hydranencephaly in cattle   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Direct inoculation of bluetongue virus into 125-day bovine fetuses resulted in development of hydranencephaly. The earliest lesions after virus inoculation were a severe necrotizing encephalitis, which was most prominent in the cerebrum, and an associated nonsuppurative meningitis. At birth, the brains of infected fetuses had thin-walled cerebral hemispheres, dilated lateral ventricles, and cerebral cysts. No gross lesions were observed in the brain stem or cerebellum. Two morphologically different lesions were present in the brain of a fetus sacrificed 20 days after virus inoculation. There were discrete foci of hemorrhagic cerebral necrosis that resembled infarcts and widespread microcavitations of the intermediate and subventricular zones. Changes consistent with vascular damage were present in the brains of fetuses sacrificed 12 and 20 days after virus inoculation. Calves with bluetongue virus-induced hydranencephaly would have poor viability, but they would not be expected to have any significance as virus reservoirs.  相似文献

Abstract

AIM: To describe the pathology of the reproductive tract of red deer stags with active Brucella ovis infection and in stags in which B. ovis infection had resolved.

METHODS: Twenty-three red deer stags of varying history were slaughtered and their epididymides and accessory sex glands examined grossly and by histopathology. At the time of slaughter five of the stags had an active B. ovis infection of 24–55 days duration following exposure to infected rams, 10 stags had been experimentally infected with B. ovis by intravenous inoculation 649 days previously and had developed an active infection but the bacterial infection had resolved at least 308 days prior to slaughter, and eight stags had not been exposed to B. ovis at any time.

RESULTS: Of the five stags with an active infection, one had gross enlargement of the epididymides that could be detected by scrotal palpation. Histological lesions in all five stags included mild to severe, predominantly non-suppurative epididymitis, vesiculitis, prostatitis and ampullitis, with neutrophil exudation in associated glandular ducts. Additional lesions in the epididymides were spermatic granulomas and epithelial hyperplasia with intra-epithelial cyst formation. Of the 10 stags in which the bacterial infection had resolved, two had gross enlargement of the epididymides. The histological lesions were similar to those in stags with active infection but were generally milder, with increased periductal scar tissue in the epididymides. The lesions seen in stags resembled those seen in rams with B. ovis infection but they were usually less florid and had fewer plasma cells. No gross abnormalities or histopathological lesions were detected in the non-infected stags.

CONCLUSIONS: Only a small percentage of red deer stags infected with B. ovis develop lesions of epididymitis that can be detected by scrotal palpation. Gross and histological lesions of the genital tract of stags associated with B. ovis infection are similar to the lesions seen in rams. Lesions in stags persist for >300 days after the bacterial infection has resolved.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Brucella ovis infection should be considered when there are gross lesions of epididymitis or histological evidence of inflammation in the epididymides or accessory sex glands of red deer stags. Retrospective diagnosis of B. ovis in stags could be achieved by histological examination of the reproductive organs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine necropsy and Mycobacterium bovis culture results in cattle from herds with tuberculosis, the role of the bovine NRAMP1 gene in resistance and susceptibility to infection with M bovis, and the association between magnitude of the tuberculous lesions and various types of M bovis isolates. ANIMALS: 61 cattle from herds with tuberculosis in Texas and Mexico. PROCEDURE: 61 cattle were evaluated by necropsy; 59 had positive and 2 had negative caudal fold tuberculin intradermal test (CFT) results. Thirty-three cattle with positive CFT results were genotyped to evaluate polymorphism of the 3' untranslated region of the bovine NRAMP1 gene, using single-stranded conformational analysis, 9 were resistant to M bovis with no tuberculous lesions and negative M bovis culture results, and 24 were susceptible with tuberculous lesions and positive M bovis culture results. Isolates of M bovis were analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) on the basis of IS6110 sequences and direct-repeat fingerprinting patterns. RESULTS: 21 (35.6%; 21/59) cattle with positive CFT results had tuberculous lesions or positive culture results; in addition, 1 of 2 cattle with negative CFT results had tuberculous lesions and positive culture results. Tuberculous lesions were most common in the thorax (35/63; 55.5%) and lymphoid tissues of the head (10/63; 15.9%). Tuberculous lesions varied from 1 to 11/animal; 8 of 21 (38.1%) had solitary lesions. Associations were not found between resistance or susceptibility to infection with M bovis and polymorphism in the NRAMP1 gene or between the magnitude of the lesions and various RFLP types of M bovis isolates. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The NRAMP1 gene does not determine resistance and susceptibility to infection with M bovis in cattle.  相似文献

The recent discovery of tuberculosis in free-living white-tailed deer in northeastern Michigan underscores the need for increased understanding of the pathogenesis of tuberculosis in wildlife species. To investigate lesion development in white-tailed deer, 32 deer were experimentally infected by intratonsilar instillation of 300 colony-forming units of Mycobacterium bovis. Three deer each were euthanatized and examined at days 15, 28, 42, and 56 after inoculation, and five deer each were euthanatized and examined at days 89, 180, 262, and 328 after inoculation. Microscopic lesions first were seen in the medial retropharyngeal lymph node and lung 28 and 42 days after inoculation, respectively. Lung lesions were present in 12 (38%) of 32 deer, involving 23 lung lobes. Left caudal and right middle and caudal lobes were involved in 17 (74%) of the 23 affected lung lobes. Lesions in the medial retropharyngeal lymph node first appeared as granulomas composed of aggregates of macrophages and Langhans-type giant cells. Some early granulomas contained centrally located neutrophils. As granulomas developed, neutrophils were replaced with a central zone of caseous necrosis that first showed signs of mineralization 42 days after inoculation. Granulomas increased in size as the zone of caseous necrosis expanded. Peripheral fibrosis, first seen at 56 days after inoculation, progressed to only a thin fibrous capsule by 328 days after inoculation. By the termination of the study, the central necrotic core of the granuloma contained abundant liquefied necrotic material and grossly resembled an abscess. Although tuberculous lesions in white-tailed deer follow a developmental pattern similar to that in cattle, fibrosis is less pronounced and the advanced lesions may liquefy, a change seldom reported in cattle. An understanding of lesion development will aid in the identification of the spectrum of disease that may be seen in this important wildlife reservoir of tuberculosis.  相似文献

Seventy-nine wild hedgehogs from the Wairarapa, an area of New Zealand in which bovine tuberculosis is endemic, were examined for lesions suggestive of tuberculosis. Sixteen animals with suspicious lesions had samples submitted for culture. Mycobacterium bovis was recovered from four animals with gross pulmonary lesions. The gross and histopathological appearance of the lesions are described and the significance discussed in the light of previously reported experimental and captive animal infections. It is likely that infection arose from the scavenging behaviour of hedgehogs. The moderate prevalence (5%) of tuberculosis in these animals combined with their small home ranges may allow them to be used in wildlife surveys to pinpoint the locality in which tuberculous possums have died.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine epidemiologic factors associated with tuberculosis (TB) in dairy cattle slaughtered in 6 important regions for milk production in Mexico. ANIMALS: 2,500 cattle. PROCEDURE: Tissue specimens with lesions typical of TB were obtained during routine inspection of carcasses at abbatoirs between July 1996 and January 1997. Infection with Mycobacterium organisms was confirmed by histologic examination and bacteriologic culture. Species identification was made by use of selective growth medium, conventional biochemical tests, and radiometric procedures. Epidemiologic information for affected cattle was obtained by personal interviews with cattle dealers and owners. RESULTS: 400 (16%) of 2,500 cattle carcasses had gross lesions typical of TB. Of the 400 infected cattle, 336 (84%) had lesions in > or = 1 lymph node. Infection was confirmed in 87% of cattle with gross lesions by histologic examination, in 77% by bacteriologic culture at a laboratory in the United States, and in 59% by bacteriologic culture at a laboratory in Mexico. Most cattle were adult females in fair to good body condition that came from large herds (> 500 cattle) and were not included in the Mexican TB control program. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mean prevalence of lesions typical of TB in dairy cattle at 6 locations in Mexico was 16%. Mycobacterium infection was confirmed by various techniques in most lesions. Recognition of typical gross lesions at slaughter may expedite TB control procedures.  相似文献

Hepatic fibrosis with bile duct ectasia and hyperplasia associated with polycystic kidney disease, analogous to Caroli syndrome in humans, was observed in a rat used as a control in a subchronic toxicity study. Light microscopy of liver sections showed multiple cystic and segmental saccular dilatations and hyperplasia of the intrahepatic bile ducts associated with overgrowth of portal connective tissue; the kidneys had diffuse cystic dilatation of cortical renal tubules. The lesions resembled those of human cases of the fibropolycystic disease termed as Caroli syndrome, which is thought to be the result of a pathologic developmental process known as ductal plate malformation. Recently, an animal model of Caroli syndrome has been described in mutant rats from a colony that constantly showed renal and hepatic cysts and an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. The finding in our case of identical hepatorenal lesions suggests that the same mutation has occurred incidentally in a standard colony.  相似文献

Multifocal cutaneous histiocytic lesions were recognized in 9 dogs. Clinically, the dogs had multiple erythematous plaques or nodules in the skin (1 to 5 cm diameter). Histologically, the lesions were comprised of dermal or pannicular infiltrates of large histiocytic cells, with varying numbers of other inflammatory cells intermixed. By electron microscopy, the cells resembled those of canine cutaneous histiocytoma. The lesions seemed to wax and wane and appeared in new sites, regardless of treatment. The dogs ranged in age from 2 to 13 years; 7 dogs were under 6 years of age. Both sexes and various breeds were represented. An infectious agent could not be identified.  相似文献

Naturally occurring tuberculosis in white-tailed deer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of lesions and extent of tissues infected with Mycobacterium bovis in a captive population of white-tailed deer. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 116 captive white-tailed deer. PROCEDURE: Deer were euthanatized, and postmortem examinations were performed. Tissues with gross lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were collected for microscopic analysis and bacteriologic culture. Tissues from the head, thorax, and abdomen of deer with no gross lesions were pooled for bacteriologic culture. Tonsillar, nasal, oral, and rectal swab specimens, fecal samples, and samples of hay and pelleted feed, soil around feeding sites, and water from 2 natural ponds were collected for bacteriologic culture. RESULTS: Mycobacterium bovis was isolated from 14 of 116 (12%) deer; however, only 9 of 14 had lesions consistent with tuberculosis. Most commonly affected tissues included the medial retropharyngeal lymph node and lung. Five of 14 tuberculous deer had no gross lesions; however, M bovis was isolated from pooled tissue specimens from the heads of each of these deer. Bacteriologic culture of tonsillar swab specimens from 2 of the infected deer yielded M bovis. Mean (+/- SEM) age of tuberculous deer was 2.5 +/- 0.3 years (range, 0.5 to 6 years). Mycobacterium bovis was not isolated from feed, soil, water, or fecal samples. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Examination of hunter-killed white-tailed deer for tuberculosis commonly includes only the lymph nodes of the head. Results of such examinations may underestimate disease prevalence by as much as 57%. Such discrepancy should be considered when estimating disease prevalence.  相似文献

Three cases of bovine, ovarian epidermoid cysts were diagnosed as unilateral benign lesions in three out of 1,971 cows at slaughter. A stratified, cornifying, and squamous epithelium without associated skin adnexal structures or tissues from other embryonic tissue layers lined the cysts. The cysts were small, usually multiple, and contained keratin debris. Macroscopically, they resembled abscesses. These are benign, congenital lesions that are a separate entity from dermoids and teratomas, and they appear to have a higher incidence in cattle with Bos indicus breeding.  相似文献

Eighteen cats with miliary dermatitis were evaluated, using skin testing and histology. Sixteen cats had allergic skin disease (14 cats had positive skin-test reactions to flea antigen [two of which were also atopic], one was atopic only, and one was allergic to beef). In the two remaining cats, the cause of miliary dermatitis was not identified. Histologically, 17 of the cats had superficial eosinophilic dermatitis and epidermal spongiosis, crusting, and ulceration, which were compatible with an allergic cause. Four of these cats had concurrent eosinophilic plaques, which histologically resembled miliary lesions. This overlap of plaques with miliary lesions indicated that when plaques and miliary dermatitis are found concurrently, both lesions may be caused by the same allergens.  相似文献

Abstract: A 6-year-old Rottweiler was presented to the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine for evaluation of multiple cutaneous nodules. The dog had a history of anorexia, vomiting, and hind-limb paraplegia. Results of cytologic examination of the cutaneous nodules were consistent with a round cell tumor. At necropsy, primary tumors were found coalescing in the duodenum and the pancreas and extending into the associated mesentery. Numerous masses also were found throughout the skin, abdominal and thoracic viscera, and lumbar spinal cord. Histologically, the duodenal tumor had variable morphology, with some areas resembling adenocarcinoma and others resembling anaplastic round cell neoplasia; the skin and other metastatic lesions resembled round cell neoplasia. Immunohistochemistry of the cutaneous, duodenal, and pancreatic masses showed the neoplastic cells were positive for pancytokeratin, supporting an epithelial origin. In addition, low numbers of neoplastic cells were positive for periodic acid-Schiff and Alcian blue, consistent with acid mucin production by duodenal epithelium. These findings confirmed that the cutaneous nodules were metastatic lesions originating from the duodenal adenocarcinoma. Cutaneous metastasis of intestinal carcinoma is rare in domestic animals. This case demonstrates the potential difficulty in diagnosing metastatic lesions based on cytologic and histologic morphology alone, because the cutaneous metastases may not resemble the primary neoplasm morphologically.  相似文献
