Summary Plantain (Musa spp., AAB group) cultivation is threatened by black sigatoka, an airborne fungal (Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet) leaf spot disease. Several traits in plantains and bananas are mainly affected by major genes. The host resistance response to black sigatoka is under the control of at least three different genes, one major recessive gene bs 1 and two other independent additive alleles. Diploid and tetraploid plantain hybrids were evaluated for bunch weight, fruit weight, fruit length and fruit circumference. The F1 euploid hybrids were derived from interspecific crosses between the resistant diploid wild banana Calcutta 4 and the susceptible triploid plantain cultivars Obino l'Ewai and Bobby Tannap. Linear and multiple regression models, coefficients of determination, and Durbin-Watson statistics were used to determine the single and combined effects of the major locus for black sigatoka resistance and ploidy on the different traits in the progenies. Differences in yield were mainly due to changes in weight and girth of fruit, which are affected by black sigatoka disease. The combined effect of ploidy and resistance to black sigatoka was partially responsible for the quantitative trait variation in yield. As a result of the gene interaction in the black sigatoka resistance locus bs 1, the partially resistant and less susceptible phenotypes showed higher yield than their more susceptible full sibs.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of raw cucumber fruit texture (Magness-Taylor Fruit Pressure Tester firmness) was investigated over a 4-year period from 1971–1974. Results from 2 separate but related experiments suggested that firmness was quantitatively inherited with sufficient additive effects to permit gain from selection. In a selection study within 4 F2 populations derived from crosses between firm (Chipper and Gy3) and soft (Mincu and Green F) fruit type cultivars, variation among and within F3 and F4 families was significant but overall family means were not significantly higher than the high parent in any of the 4 crosses. Narrow sense heritability estimates for fruit texture were 0.80 in the Mincu × Chipper population and 0.77 in the Green F × Chipper, Mincu × Gy3, and Gy3 × Green F crosses. In a separate experiment, generation means analysis was used to assess the mode of gene action in 2 crosses: Green F × Chipper, and Gy3 × Green F. Additive genetic effects accounted for 98.8% and 99.3% of the total genetic variation within each cross, respectively.Scientific Journal Series Paper No. 9794.  相似文献

Perspectives of molecular marker assisted breeding for earliness in tomato   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) breeding programme aimed at earliness, a breeding line, designated IVT-KT1, was developed by several rounds of crossing and selection. Among its ancestors were the two wild relatives L. pimpinellifolium and L. parviflorum. The breeding line flowered and set fruit one to four weeks earlier than old and modern cultivars. To identify QTLs for earliness, an F2 population was obtained by crossing IVT-KT1 with the late true breeding cultivar Premier. In winter and early spring, 690 plants of this F2 population were evaluated for earliness of which 292 were selected for RFLP analysis. Only limited parts of the genomes of IVT-KT1 and Premier were polymorphic and these polymorphisms were likely due to introgression from the ancestor wild species. By using the interval mapping method on the combined data of the greenhouse evaluations and RFLP analyses, three loci were identified that were associated with earliness. One was mainly associated with flowering time, another with fruitset time and a third one with ripening time. Two of these loci were also associated with fruit weight. F3 progenies selected for earliness on the basis of the QTL-data did confirm the F2 results. Two major earliness genes explained a difference in earliness of more than three weeks. The association with reduced fruit weight seemed to be due to pleiotropic effects rather than to linked genes. Consequently, the gain in earliness will cause a reduction in fruit weight that may not be acceptable for breeding applications.  相似文献

Summary The number of effective factors controlling the inheritance of a quantitative character can be estimated by analysis of F3 lines where the parental lines are homozygous. The procedure is illustrated with data from a study of pod length inheritance in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The mean pod length of Sprite, the parent with longer pods, was compared statistically with the means of F3 progenies derived from F2 plants obtained from the appropriate tail of the F2 frequency distribution for pod length. The data indicate that analysis of F3 progenies avoids much of the underestimation of the effective factor number which is characteristic of other procedures. The number of effective factors was estimated to be a minimum of 4 and the correlation between random F2 parents and F3 progeny means was r=0.82.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. 406.  相似文献

Summary To determine the origin of Ogura male sterile cytoplasm in radish (Raphanus sativus L.), wild and cultivated radishes were crossed. Three types of progeny resulted from the F1 hybrids between the wild radish from Kushikino with Ogura-type mtDNA and the cultivars (Uchiki-Gensuke or Comet). The segregation patterns of the male sterility were compared with those of Ogura cytoplasm. The male sterility induced in the F1 hybrid was maintained by crossing with Uchiki-Gensuke, that maintains Ogura male sterility. In the two types of progeny, in which Comet (a restorer of Ogura cytoplasm) was used as one of the parents, both fertile and sterile plants segregated at the predicted ratio on the assumption that a single dominant fertility restoring gene exists in the restorer. From these results, we concluded that the Ogura cytoplasm is identical to that of the wild radish, and the former originated in a population of Japanese wild radish.  相似文献

Summary OSU 5062, a green bean line with a tendency for pods to become creasebacked (wider than deep) in cross-section, was crossed to near-round-podded cultivars Oregon 83 and Slenderette, oval-podded Bountiful, and flat-podded Roma, to further clarify the inheritance of pod cross-section. Differences among generations in pod cross-section index (PCS), calculated as pod width/depth, were small in the near-round x creaseback crosses (1.07 and 1.01 for Oregon 83 and Slenderette versus 1.20 for OSU 5062). Bountiful (0.63) and Roma (0.50) differed to a greater extent from 5062. Generation means of individual plant PCS of the F1 and F2 were almost identical, were almost exactly intermediate between parents, and strongly supported additive inheritance. Backcross data generally supported additive inheritance, but in some cases indicated degrees of dominance of higher PCS. A generation means analysis indicated additive gene action, but deviations from an additive-dominance model were significant in each cross.  相似文献

The current study illustrates that fruit breeding should not only target elite fruit that are significantly more liked than existing cultivars, but also target special unique fruit that create major new flavour niches. Breeding targets can be identified in terms of consumer preferences for new and defined flavours. A trained panel was used to assess the flavours of a wide range of kiwifruit, and these characteristics were systematically arranged into flavour and odour wheels. These wheels describe some of the diversity found within the kiwifruit germplasm. Next, consumers from Japan and New Zealand rated their overall liking of fruit from each of 10 genotypes. Consumer preference mapping was used to explore the relationships between consumer liking and flavour. Cluster analysis was used to explore the diverse responses consumers may have to the same fruit. Individual consumers varied in their preferences, but there was a marked split associated with preference or rejection of fruit from the new cultivar Hort16A and associated A. chinensis genotypes. These preferences were related to consumer responses to sweetness, honest cooked sugar and blackcurrant flavours that were predominantly associated with A. chinensis genotypes, and absent in previous commercial kiwifruit cultivars. The first significant export of Hort16A fruit occurred in 1998. Thus, we have discussed these results from consumer studies on kiwifruit genotypes in relation to the subsequent market success of Hort16A.  相似文献

Summary Seedcoat colour in greengram (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek.) is a useful marker for genetic studies and varietal identification. Its mode of inheritance was examined in five crosses among nine parents which differed for seedcoat colour. Four of the parents had sap green seedcoat colour while the others had raw sienna, brownish green, densely black spotted, black and greenish yellow seedcoat colour, respectively. At the F2 generation, no more than 20 different colour classes were observed. The segregation in F3 and backcross generations indicated that at least five major genes were involved in seedcoat colour inheritance. Sap green seemed to be dominant over raw sienna. The segregation ratios further indicated the role of non-allelic gene interactions (epistasis) in inheritance of seedcoat colour. Gene symbols were assigned to each colour and genotypes to each parent.  相似文献

Summary Host plant genetics of N2 fixation in the cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) — Rhizobium symbiosis was investigated in the field with a mixed strain inoculum and in the greenhouse with a single strain inoculum. Five cowpea genotypes, including H-Brown Crowder and L-Bush Purple Hull, were used to generate populations for genetic studies. Diallel analysis for general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA) and reciprocal effects was carried out for the N2 fixation variables nitrogenase activity, nodule number, nodule weight, and top dry weight, in the field study. Generation mean analysis and heritability estimates were performed on the greenhouse population which included P1 (H-Brown Crowder), P2 (L-Bush Purple Hull), F1, F1. F2, BC1, and BC2. Positive and significant correlations were observed between nitrogenase activity and both nodule weight and nodule number. Correlation coefficients between top dry weight and the other 3 variables were not significant. Estimates of SCA were highly significant for all variables except top dry weight, while those of GCA were significant only for nodule weight. Generation mean analysis revealed that additive gene action was more prominent than dominance and interallelic gene action for nodule number and nitrogenase activity, while the opposite was true for nodule weight and top dry weight. Narrow sense heritability estimates were moderately high for nodule number (0.55) and nitrogenase activity (0.62), and low for nodule weight (0.39) and top dry weight (0.17).Texas Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Article 20385. Summary Nuclear and cytoplasmic genes from 10 diverse Avena sterilis L. accessions were introgressed into four Corn Belt oat (A. sativa L.) cultivars. Grain and straw yield, harvest index, heading date, height, unit straw weight, and vegetative growth index were evaluated in the BC2 generation of 76 cytoplasmic isopopulations. Means of all seven traits in the BC2 of Tippecanoe matings were greater than Tippecanoe due to introgression of A. sterilis germplasm, whereas means of all seven traits in BC2 populations of Ogle were inferior to those of Ogle. BC2 populations of matings involving CI 9170 and CI 9268 were variable, with some trait means being greater than those of the recurrent parents and some being lower. The phenomena of nuclear-cytoplasmic interaction effects and nuclear-cytoplasmic heterosis also were investigated. In matings where significant differences were present between cytoplasmic isopopulations, those with A. sterilis cytoplasm usually were superior, but no trait exhibited a consistent cytoplasmic effect across all matings. These results suggest that all seven traits were influenced by nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions. Nuclear-cytoplasmic heterosis for grain yield was present in two of 38 isopopulations with A. sterilis cytoplasm; both were from matings involving Tippecanoe. Nuclear-cytoplasmic heterosis for each of the remaining traits was observed in four to eight of the 38 isopopulations with A. sterilis cytoplasm.  相似文献

Summary For genetic analysis of head blight in winter rye (Secale cereale) caused by Fusarium culmorum, six homozygous inbred lines from the Petkus gene pool were crossed in all combinations to obtain 15 diallel F1 crosses and the corresponding 15 F2 crosses. These materials and 10 additional inbreds were artificially inoculated in a 2-year field experiment. The inbreds were also tested with F. graminearum in a separate sub-experiment.Single disease rating, average disease rating, and yield components (grain-weight per spike, 1000-grain weight, kernel number per spike) relative to the non-inoculated treatment were significantly affected by Fusarium head blight in all material groups. The relative grain weight per spike ranged from 26% to 88%. Significant genotypic and genotype x year interaction variances were found throughout. Heritabilities were highest for homogeneous inbreds (h2=0.6–0.8) and lowest for heterogeneous F2 crosses (h2=0.4–0.6). Disease rating and relative grain-weight per spike were highly correlated for the inbreds and F2 crosses (r0.7, P0.01), but lower for the F1 crosses (r0.6, P0.05). Inter-annual correlation coefficients for disease ratings and relative grain-weight per spike ranged from r0.7 (inbreds) to r0.5 (F2 crosses). The diallel analysis showed significant GCA effects only for relative 1000-grain weight in 1990, but significant SCA and SCAx year interaction variances for most traits. The resistances of 16 inbreds to F. culmorum and F. graminearum were tightly associated for all traits (r=0.96–0.97, P0.01).In conclusion, only slow progress can be expected from selecting for Fusarium head blight resistance in rye due to the limited amount of additive genetic variance and the great improtance of environmental factors.  相似文献

By using two tomato genotypes, 227/1 (Fe chlorosis susceptible) and Roza (Fe chlorosis tolerant), and their reciprocal F1, F2 and BC1 generations, the inheritance of tolerance to leaf Fe deficiency chlorosis of Roza was studied. Plants were grown in a nutrient solution and subjected to 2.0 × 10–6 M Fe EDDHA and 10 mM NaHCO3 to induce Fe deficiency stress by stabilization of pH to 7.8–8.2. A rating scale of 1–3 for chlorophyll was used and both monogenic and polygenic inheritance hypotheses were tested. Better responses to Fe deficiency, as measured by SPAD meter values, were obtained from the cross Roza × 227/1 than from the reciprocal cross. Data from F2 and BC1 suggest Fe chlorosis tolerance of Roza is to be controlled by polygenic loci with a relatively high additive effect.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of the character complex of naked grain and multiflorous spikelets was studied in a diallel set of crosses comprising five varieties of naked oats (Avena nuda)-As 78, Manu, Caesar, Nuprime and AJ86/2/1-and one variety of husked oats (A. sativa), Maris Oberon. In the F1 generation the distribution of multiflorous spikelets was in all cases similar to that of the mid-parent. Crosses between the varieties of A. nuda produced only naked grain on plants in the F1 and F2 generations, indicating that nakedness in the varieties studied was determined by the same loci. The three-gene model proposed by Moule (1972) for the determination of A. nuda characters was inadequate to account for the observed F2 segregation in naked x husked crosses. An extension of this model is proposed to include a third modifying gene, N3, which in the homozygous dominant condition produces the husked phenotype when the principal gene, N, is heterozygous. The model assumes complex epistatic relationships between the three modifying genes N1, N2 and N3. Published information and further experimental data suggest that the genotype NN--N3N3 is uncommon. The expression of the genes determining nakedness was greatly influenced by the environment.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of seedling reactions to cultures of races TLM and MBCT of Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici was studied in crosses of the resistant durum Reichenbachii with susceptible Marruecos 9623 and DZ04-118. The Chi-square test for goodness of fit was used to analyze segregating populations. Two independent recessive genes appeared to control resistance of Reichenbachii to both TLM and MBCT. Depending upon the cross, the two genes interacted cumulatively to condition immunity or higher levels of resistance than either parent conditioned singly. There was no evidence of maternal influence on the inheritance of resistance. Resistance genes in Reichenbachii were recessive; therefore, breeders should consider the use of relatively large F2 populations to effectively transfer these genes to cultivars with good agronomic characteristics.  相似文献

Summary True-breeding, leaf rust (Puccinia coronata Cda. f. sp. avenae Fraser and Led.) resistant oat lines with somatic chromosome numbers of 42 and 44, were recovered in the advanced generations of a pentaploid hybrid from the cross between C.I. 7232, a leaf rust resistant and dark lemma colored derived tetraploid and Clarion, a susceptible hexaploid oat. Microsporocyte observations and breeding behaviour of these lines and their F1 hybrids with susceptible hexaploid oat cultivars indicated that the 42- and 44-chromosome lines are disomic substitutions (20+1A) and disomic additions (21+1A), respectively, of the same alien chromosome which carries genes for dark colored lemma and leaf rust resistance. The substitution and addition lines possess good field resistance to leaf rust. Plants of substitution lines were less vigorous, shorter, with poor straw and reduced fertility. Addition lines had reduced tillering ability, plant vigour, culm thickness, leaf width and fertility and were late maturing. Progeny tests for resistance indicated that substitution lines are more stable than addition lines. It is suggested that these lines may be of value in a program of radiation-induced gene transfer.  相似文献

Summary The total steroidal alkaloid compositions of the mature-harvested fruits of the tomato cultivar Allround (Lycopersicon esculentum), of the species L. hirsutum glabratum, resistant to the glasshouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), and of four resistant lines were determined by capillary gas chromatography. The contents of -tomatine in the red-ripe fruits of Allround and in those of the lines were low (5 mg/kg fresh weight). The green-mature fruits of the wild species had a high content (3390 mg/kg fresh weight) of -tomatine. The total alkaloid profiles of Allround and of the lines were similar. Comparison of flame ionisation detector response with thermoionic detector response indicated that in addition to tomatidine, the aglycone of -tomatine, a small amount of one other steroidal alkaloid might be present in Allround and in the lines. The wild species contained five compounds which possibly are steroidal alkaloids. The safety level of -tomatine in tomatoes is discussed. It was concluded that, in respect of the glycoalkaloids of the mature-harvested fruits, the resistant tomato breeding lines are as safe for human cosumption as the standard cultivar.  相似文献

Summary Two wheat cultivars that consistently show high levels of grain -amylase at harvest ripeness, in the absence of preharvest sprouting, were crossed with a control, low -amylase cultivar, and F1, F2 and BC1 populations were developed. Grain of these populations was analysed for -amylase activity at harvest ripeness. Distribution and segregation patterns were consistent with control at a single locus with high -amylase the recessive allele. This mode of inheritance would make it extremely difficult to differentiate homozygous low -amylase lines from heterozygotes (low -amylase phenotype but carriers of high -amylase) and has important implications for wheat breeders. High -amylase, termed late maturity -amylase, was not linked with the awned inhibitor gene, B2, located on the long arm of chromsome 6B.  相似文献

Summary White fruited plants from the variety White bush were crossed to green and striped fruit in order to study the inheritance of white fruit in summer squash. The genetic ratio suggested that green fruit is controlled by two genes, C and R, and that one (C) has a dominant epistatic control. The white fruit is determined as ccrr. A third fruit color group appeared in the F2, F3 and BC1, having white fruit after anthesis which changed to green during development. The genetic control for this fruit is suggested to be ccR..The green striped fruit showed a simple dominance (St) over the plain white. The dark stem of the Zucchini variety showed single gene dominance (D) over the light green stem.It was found that an association exists between the nonpersistent fruit color and dark green stem, and between white fruit and light green stem.Contribution from the Volcani Institute of Agricultural Research, Bet Dagan, Israel. 1968 Series; No. 1437E.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific hybrids were generated from crosses between 4 Zinnia angustifolia clones (maternal parents) and an inbred line of Z. elegans Orange King (paternal parent) to investigate the influence of Z. angustifolia genotype on morphology and flowering of hybrids. Leaf length, leaf width, flower diameter, number of ray petals, and days to flowering of interspecific hybrids were significantly influenced by Z. angustifolia clonal genotype. Genetic analysis of hybrid morphology and development was performed using 2 parental Z. angustifolia clones and 18 F1 (9 seedlings from each of 2 populations generated from reciprocal crosses between parental clones) as maternal parents in crosses with Z. elegans Orange King. Genotype of Z. angustifolia significantly affected plant height, fresh weight, number of nodes, and days to flowering of interspecific hybrids. Control of these traits was through the Z. angustifolia nuclear genome. Improvement in interspecific hybrid morphology or development, i.e., shorter stature, earlier flowering, or larger flowers, may be possible by selection of superior-performing Z. angustifolia clones as parents.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of tolerance in the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) to metribuzin 4-amino-6-tert- butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazine-5(4H)-one herbicide was investigated. A biossay using a nutrient solution culture in controlled environment growth cabinets was used to evaluate progeny from tolerant by susceptible tomato cultivar crosses for response to metribuzin. Fireball and Vision were used as tolerant cultivars and Heinz 1706 as a susceptible cultivar. Parental, F1, F2, and some backcross generations were studied. Visual phytotoxicity, seedling height, and seedling dry weight were recorded. The bioassay was effective for classification of the segregating generations. F2, and progeny variance analysis suggested that the inheritance of tolerance to metribuzin was controlled by one major gene with modifiers. Heritability values of 0.58 to 0.72 indicated a potential for cultivar improvement through plant breeding.  相似文献
