Abstract Estimates of the growth parameters (L and K), mortality coefficients (Z, M and F) and exploitation rate (E) for the blackspot snapper, Lutjanus fulviflamma (Forsskål) from the Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) and adjacent intensively fished areas in Tanzania were determined. Sectioned otoliths showed that L. fulviflamma in the MIMP attained a maximum age of 18 years, with a high proportion of fish between 6 and 10 years old. The maximum age was 8 years in the intensively fished areas, with a preponderance of 2‐ and 4‐year‐old fish. The size structures of the populations in the MIMP and that in the intensively fished areas were markedly different, with the MIMP fish averaging (±SE) 211.4 ± 0.38 mm TL, but 154.6 ± 0.32 mm TL in the intensively fished areas. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 290.3 mm TL, K = 0.15 year?1 and t0 = ?2.7 years. There was no significant difference in growth between the four populations (L: F‐stat = 0.14, P = 1.000, and K: F‐stat = 0.26, P = 0.992). Total mortality was 0.55 and 1.64 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively, natural mortality 0.27 year?1 and fishing mortality 0.18 and 1.37 year?1 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.51 and 0.84 in the MIMP and intensively fished areas, respectively. The artisanal seine net fishery is directed mainly at younger fish in the intensively fished areas resulting in growth overfishing. The protracted life span, the slow growth and natural mortality rates imply that L. fulviflamma is vulnerable to overfishing and that the protection provided by the park, although limited, is vital for sustaining the fishery at Mafia Island.  相似文献

We revisit the empirical equation of Gislason et al. (2010, Fish and Fisheries 11 :149–158) for predicting natural mortality (M, year?1) of marine fish. We show it to be equivalent to , where L (cm) and K (year?1) are the von Bertalanffy growth equation (VBGE) parameters, and L (cm) is fish length along the growth trajectory within the species. We then interpret K in terms of the VBGE in mass , and show that the previous equation is itself equivalent to a ?? power function rule between M and the mass at first reproduction (Wα); this new ?? power function emerges directly from the life history that maximizes Darwinian fitness in non‐growing populations. We merge this M, Wα power function with other power functions to produce general across‐species scaling rules for yearly reproductive allocation, reproductive effort and age at first reproduction in fish. We then suggest a new way to classify habitats (or lifestyles) as to the life histories they should contain, and we contrast our scheme with the widely used Winemiller–Rose fish lifestyle classification.  相似文献

An earlier cohort analysis using catch-at-length data (for the period May 1979–April 1980) on the stock of Osteochilus hasselti C. & V. computes statistics on: (1) the total stock at the start of the cohort (N = 22.7 × 105) (these stock numbers decrease progressively at successive lengths, in a steady state and assuming constant natural mortality rate, M = 2.1); (2) catch numbers in a cohort totalling 780 940 individuals; (3) the exploitation rate of the cohort of E = 0.34, suggesting moderate exploitation of the species at Bukit Merah Reservoir, Malaysia. However, the validity of cohort analysis on a species exploited at a very early age depends on the input value of the variables natural mortality rate (M), fishing mortality rate of terminal largest fish (Fter), and growth parameters (L, K). Because of the methodological difficulties in estimation and verification of M, Fter and K values of O. hasselti, a range of values of input variables is adopted for comparison. The effect of the variability of M values (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5) on the computation results of smaller size-class fishes NL is significantly different from that based on M = 2.1, showing a much lower population size. The variability of input values of Fter (range 0.5–2.5) and K (0.28–2.62) is tested on their effects on the population size of recruits. The combined effect of M and K in the relationship of MK ranging from 0.8 to 2.5 is varied to decide the possible values of K. In general, the different input values of M, Fter and K result in lower estimates of the population size of recruits, Nr This is about 28% lower than Nr = 22.7 × 105 when M = Fter = 2.1 and K = 1.15. With an inherent computational bias, the population size of Nr = 22.7 × 105 is probably an under-estimate, but it is both reasonable and biologically possible for O. hasselti at Bukit Merah Reservoir, Malaysia, since the input variables are generated from representative length composition data of commercial catches and tagging data.  相似文献

The effects of two different environmental salinities [brackish water (BW), 12‰; sea water (SW), 39‰] and initial stock densities [low (LD), 1.0 g L?1; high (HD), 2.0 g L?1] on growth, osmoregulation, stress and energy metabolism of the fry Pagrus pagrus were investigated over a period of 45 days. Pagrus pagrus (n=80, 5.51 ± 0.25 g mean initial body weight) were randomly divided in eight groups. Growth, weight gain and specific growth rate increased in BW‐acclimated fish compared with SW‐acclimated fish. No differences were observed between the two stock densities tested at either environmental salinity. Plasma osmolality was lowest in BW‐acclimated specimens, but the stock density had no effect on this parameter. Branchial Na+,K+‐ATPase activity was positively correlated with environmental salinity, but unaltered at the renal level. Plasmatic parameters were enhanced by salinity and stocking conditions. At the hepatic level, triglyceride values were enhanced in BW‐acclimated fish maintained at LD. Muscle metabolites (glycogen, glucose and lactate) increased in BW‐ compared with SW‐acclimated fish; stock density had no influence. Our data suggest that changes in metabolic parameters could be correlated with the higher growth rates observed in P. pagrus acclimated to BW, while no significant effects due to the stocking density used were observed.  相似文献

Growth and mortality of adult Strombus gigas L. was studied in a population offshore of La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Adult queen conchs do not grow in shell length, but only in shell thickness. Growth in thickness of the flared shell-lip was measured during a 2-year mark-recapture study and modelled using the von Bertalanffy growth function. Model parameters were K=0.3706 year−1 and L (asymptotic lip-thickness) =54.9 mm; the third von Bertalanffy parameter, t0, cannot be obtained from mark-recapture data alone. Growth in tissue, meat and shell weights of adults were determined using the von Bertalanffy growth function in conjunction with regression equations for weights versus shell length and/or lip thickness. Total instantaneous mortality in adults, determined using von Bertalanffy parameters and lip-thickness frequency analysis, was 1.66 year−1. Subtracting a previous estimate of fishing mortality (F=1.14 year−1) yielded a natural mortality (M) of 0.52 year−1. Given an average age at maturation, defined by the formation of the flared shell-lip, of 3.2 years, the age of first reproduction was estimated at 3.6 years, but could be as much as 4 years.  相似文献

In an attempt to improve post‐harvest skin colour in cultured Australian snapper Pagrus auratus, a two‐factor experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of a short‐term change in cage colour before harvest, followed by immersion in K+‐enriched solutions of different concentrations. Snapper supplemented with 39 mg unesterified astaxanthin kg?1 for 50 days were transferred to black (for 1 day) or white cages (for 1 or 7 days) before euthanasia by immersing fish in seawater ice slurries supplemented with 0, 150, 300, 450 or 600 mmol L?1 K+ for 1 h. Each treatment was replicated with five snapper (mean weight=838 g) held individually within 0.2 m3 cages. L*, a* and b* skin colour values of all fish were measured after removal from K+ solutions at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h. After immersion in K+ solutions, fish were stored on ice. Both cage colour and K+ concentration significantly affected post‐harvest skin colour (P<0.05), and there was no interaction between these factors at any of the measurement times (P>0.05). Conditioning dark‐coloured snapper in white surroundings for 1 day was sufficient to significantly improve skin lightness (L*) after death. Although there was no difference between skin lightness values for fish held for either 1 or 7 days in white cages at measurement times up to 12 h, fish held in white cages for 7 days had significantly higher L* values (i.e. they were lighter) after 24 and 48 h of storage on ice than those held only in white cages for 1 day. K+ treatment also affected (improved) skin lightness post harvest although not until 24 and 48 h after removal of fish from solutions. Before this time, K+ treatment had no effect on skin lightness. Snapper killed by seawater ice slurry darkened (lower L*) markedly during the first 3 h of storage in contrast with all K+ treatments that prevented darkening. After 24 and 48 h of storage on ice, fish exposed to 450 and 600 mmol L?1 K+ were significantly lighter than fish from seawater ice slurries. In addition, skin redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) were strongly dependent on K+ concentration. The initial decline in response to K+ was overcome by a return of a* and b* values with time, most likely instigated by a redispersal of erythrosomes in skin erythrophores. Fish killed with 0 mmol L?1 K+ maintained the highest a* and b* values after death, but were associated with darker (lower L*) skin colouration. It is concluded that a combination of conditioning snapper in white surroundings for 1 day before harvest, followed by immersion in seawater ice slurries supplemented with 300–450 mmol L?1 K+ improves skin pigmentation after >24 h of storage on ice.  相似文献

The Asian swamp eel Monopterus albus is normally considered a freshwater species, but can also occasionally be found in brackish water. It is an obligate air‐breather with highly reduced gills, making its osmoregulation physiology interesting because the gills normally represent the primary site of osmoregulation in teleosts. Being a popular fish for human consumption, the swamp eel is cultured extensively in freshwater ponds in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. However, very little is known about its salinity tolerance, which is becoming topical due to the increasing salt‐water intrusions into tropical deltas. We therefore studied how increased salinity affects survival, growth, blood pressure, heart rate, blood osmolality and plasma ions. All eels survived prolonged exposure to 5 and 10 g L?1, although plasma osmolality increased significantly at 10 g L?1. Further elevation to 15 and 20 g L?1 was associated with significantly elevated mortality, with a corresponding increase in plasma osmolality and ion con‐centrations. Our results show that swamp eels thrive in 0–10 g L?1 with an optimum growth between 0 and 9 g L?1, indicating that utilization of low saline brackish waters for aquaculture is possible.  相似文献

The life history of an increasingly important pelagic commercial and sport fish, the Talang queenfish, Scomberoides commersonnianus, was studied in northern Australia to investigate the stock status and assess current management of the species using minimum legal lengths (MLL). Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 1404 mm FL, K = 0.10 year−1 and t0 = −1.21 year−1. There was no significant difference in growth between sexes. Ages ranged from 1 to 11 years with age composition differing between the commercial (mainly 6–7 years) and sport fishery (mainly 2–4 years). Females matured (L50) at 635 mm FL and 4–5 years. Spawning occurred between August and March when mature females were estimated to produce 259,488–2,859,935 eggs per spawning. Natural mortality (M) was estimated as 0.16–0.26 year−1, while the combined fishing mortality (Fcurrent) from commercial and sport fisheries was 0.38–0.48 year−1. Yield-per-recruit analyses revealed that under current MLL limits (no MLL or 45 cm TL) and natural mortality (M = 0.16, 0.2 and 0.26 year−1), Fcurrent exceeded the reference points Fmax (0.15–0.22 year−1) and F0.1 (0.10–0.15 year−1), suggesting the stock may be growth overfished if the current situation remains unchanged. Although a stock–recruitment relationship is unknown, spawning stock biomass-per-recruit analysis indicates the stock may also be recruitment overfished since Fcurrent exceeded the reference points F25% (0.19–0.24 year−1) and F40% (0.11–0.15 year−1). Increasing the MLL corresponding to L50 of females (70 cm TL) will greatly improve the yield and long-term sustainability of the stock, and also enhance the sport fishery by increasing the number of larger trophy fish.  相似文献

A two‐factor experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of cage colour (black or white 0.5 m3 experiment cages) and light environment (natural sunlight or reduced level of natural sunlight) on the skin colour of darkened Australian snapper. Each treatment was replicated four times and each replicate cage was stocked with five snapper (mean weight=351 g). Snapper exposed to natural sunlight were held in experimental cages located in outdoor tanks. An approximately 70% reduction in natural sunlight (measured as PAR) was established by holding snapper in experimental cages that were housed inside a ‘shade‐house’ enclosure. The skin colour of anaesthetized fish was measured at stocking and after a 2‐, 7‐ and 14‐day exposure using a digital chroma‐meter (Minolta CR‐10) that quantified skin colour according to the L*a*b* colour space. At the conclusion of the experiment, fish were killed in salt water ice slurry and post‐mortem skin colour was quantified after 0.75, 6 and 22 h respectively. In addition to these trials, an ad hoc market appraisal of chilled snapper (mean weight=409 g) that had been held in either white or in black cages was conducted at two local fish markets. Irrespective of the sampling time, skin lightness (L*) was significantly affected by cage colour (P<0.05), with fish in white cages having much higher L* values (L*≈64) than fish held in black cages (L*≈49). However, the value of L* was not significantly affected by the light environment or the interaction between cage colour and the light environment. In general, the L* values of anaesthetized snapper were sustained post mortem, but there were linear reductions in the a* (red) and b* (yellow) skin colour values of chilled snapper over time. According to the commercial buyers interviewed, chilled snapper that had been reared for a short period of time in white cages could demand a premium of 10–50% above the prices paid for similar‐sized snapper reared in black cages. Our results demonstrate that short‐term use of white cages can reduce the dark skin colour of farmed snapper, potentially improving the profitability of snapper farming.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to determine the effects of temperature and salinity on the virulence of Edwardsiella tarda to Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. In the temperature experiment, a two‐factor design was conducted to evaluate the effects of both pathogen incubation temperature and fish cultivation temperature on pathogen virulence. E. tarda was incubated at 15, 20, 25 and 30±1°C, and the fish (mean weight: 10 g) were reared at 15, 20 and 25±1°C respectively. The fish reared at different temperatures were infected with the E. tarda incubated at different temperatures. The results of a 4‐day LD50 test showed that temperature significantly affected the virulence of E. tarda (P<0.01) and the interaction between the two factors was also significant (P<0.01). For fish reared at 15°C the virulence of E. tarda was the highest at 25°C of pathogen incubation, followed by 20, 15 and 30°C. When the fish rearing temperature was raised to 20 and 25°C, the virulence of E. tarda incubated at all temperatures increased. Isolation testing demonstrated results similar to those of LD50. The higher rearing temperature increased the proliferation rate of the pathogen in fish. In the salinity experiment, the incubation salinity of E. tarda was at 0, 10, 20 and 30 g L?1, respectively, and the fish with mean weight of 50 g were cultured in natural seawater of 30 g L?1. The results of one‐way anova in 4‐day LD50 test showed that incubation salinity significantly affected virulence. Virulence was lower when the salinity of the incubation medium was at 0 and 30 g L?1, higher at 10 and 20 g L?1. The results of isolation test were in accordance with those of LD50. At 20 g L?1E. tarda had a faster proliferation rate than that at 10 g L?1.  相似文献

This paper examines the changes in the population ecology parameters and biomass of golden grey mullet (Liza aurata) in Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea from 1991 to 2005. For most years during this 14-year period, we estimated the age structure of the catch, length–weight relationship, von Bertalanffy growth parameters, condition factor, natural and fishing mortality and biomass. Growth parameters were estimated as L = 62.7 cm, K = 0.15 year−1, t0 = −0.23 year−1. The instantaneous coefficient of natural mortality was estimated as 0.350 year−1 and the instantaneous coefficient of fishing mortality varied during the 14-year period between 0.111 to 0.539 year−1. Biomass estimates of golden grey mullet, from the biomass-based cohort analysis were increased from 13,527 mt in 1991–1992 to 23,992 mt in 2002–2003. In 2004–2005, it was estimated to be 23,658 mt. We concluded that at the present time, the stock of golden grey mullet is not being over-fished.  相似文献

Tiger flathead, Neoplatycephalus richardsoni (Castelnau), and sand flathead, Platycephalus bassensis Cuvier, are undifferentiated and managed with a common legal minimum length (LML). The Commonwealth Trawl Sector (CTS) and the Tasmanian Danish‐seine fishery (TDSF) use a minimum codend mesh sizes of 90 and 70 mm, respectively. The codend mesh size should be tailored to the LML, which is based on the length of first maturity of females (M50). This study found the length–girth relationship of N. richardsoni and P. bassensis was not significantly different. Using the covered codend method, these two species had 50% retention lengths (L50) of 294 ± 2 and 307 ± 3 mm, in 70‐mm and 90‐mm codends, respectively. L50 estimates for mesh sizes from this study and others produced a curvilinear relationship: = 120 ln(x) ? 214, with an r2 of 0.8504. The size at maturity (M50) for female N. richardsoni was 337 mm, which is larger than the estimate for female P. bassensis (247 mm). There is a mismatch between the estimates of L50, the estimates of M50 and the LMLs in each fishery, leading to suboptimal exploitation of female Platycephalus. The model produced in this paper recommends a codend mesh size of 98 mm for both fisheries to exploit Platycephalus species sustainably.  相似文献

Production of biomass is central to the ecology and sustainability of fish assemblages. The goal of this study was to empirically estimate and compare fish assemblage production, production‐to‐biomass (P/B) ratios and species composition for 25 second‐ to third‐order streams spanning the Appalachian Mountains (from Vermont to North Carolina) that vary in their temperature regimes. Fish assemblage production estimates ranged from 0.15 to 6.79 g m?2 year?1, and P/B ratios ranged from 0.20 to 1.07. There were no significant differences in mean assemblage production across northern cold‐water, southern cold‐water and southern cool‐water streams (= .35). Two warm‐water streams, not included in these comparisons, had the highest mean production and biomass values. Mean assemblage P/B was significantly higher in northern cold‐water streams relative to southern cold‐water and cool‐water streams (= .01). Species evenness in production declined with stream temperature and differed significantly across the lower latitude cold‐water, cool‐water and warm‐water streams and the higher latitude (i.e. more northern) cold‐water streams. Our fish assemblage production estimates and P/B ratios were both lower and higher compared to previously published estimates for similar stream habitats. This study provides empirical fish assemblage production estimates to inform future research on southern Appalachian streams and on the potential impacts of varying temperature regimes on cold‐water, cool‐water and warm‐water fish production in the coming decades as climate change continues to threaten fish assemblages.  相似文献

The present study investigates the success of stocking fingerlings of Indian major carps ‐Gibelion catla (Hamilton), Labeo rohita Hamilton and Cirrhinus mrigala Hamilton – to enhance fish yield in 58 small reservoirs in Odisha State, India. Fish stocking and yield data were collected from State Fisheries Department, Odisha. The relationships between area, stocking density and fish yield of different size groups of reservoirs were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Fish yield increased significantly (p < 0.05, t‐test) from 204 kg/ha/year in 2012–13 to 323 kg/ha/year in 2013–14 due to adoption of CBF. The corresponding per capita fish production increased from 398 kg fisher?1 year?1 to 702 kg fisher?1 year?1 benefitting more than 8,000 fisher households. Reservoirs in the size group 100–500 ha showed the highest response of fish yield with respect to stocking of fingerlings. The size of fingerlings at stocking and area of the reservoir had greater impact on enhancing fish yield. Stocking had a profound positive impact on fish yield. This study forms a baseline evaluation of the impact of stocking on small tropical reservoirs in India. It also recommends management measures and discusses issues, and the way forward for sustainable fisheries enhancement in small tropical reservoirs in eastern India.  相似文献

Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus Houttuyn) is one of the most commercially important scombroid fish used as a food resource. Recently, there has been a demand for efficient rearing methods of this fish for a full‐life cycle aquaculture. In the present study, we evaluated the physiological responses in the juvenile S. japonicus to different ambient salinities. A significantly higher gain of the body mass was observed in the juveniles reared in 24 g/L and 13 g/L seawater than in those reared in natural seawater (34 g/L) within 40 days of the experimental period without affecting mortality. A principal enzyme for osmoregulation, Na+/K+‐ATPase, was expressed in the ionocytes located in the gill filaments of the juveniles. The number and the cell size of ionocytes and the enzymatic activity of Na+/K+‐ATPase in the gills decreased within 10 days after the low‐salinity challenge, which implies the reduction of the energy‐consuming active ion secretion under the low‐salinity environment. The physiological capacity for adaptation to low‐salinity seawater in chub mackerel could be basic knowledge to carry out culturing of these fish in coastal sea pens where ambient salinity fluctuates. The improvement of the growth performance by rearing in low‐salinity seawater will contribute to the efficient production of the seed juveniles for aquaculture.  相似文献

The efficacy of copper sulphate (CuSO4) against the early stages of an experimental acute infection of Flavobacterium columnare in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) was evaluated. Fish were challenged, by waterborne exposure to F. columnare in an ultra‐low flow‐through water delivery system, and treated with CuSO4 at 4.2 and 2.1 mg L?1 at 5.5 h post challenge for 4 h. Bacterial challenged non‐treated fish acted as a positive control and non‐challenged non‐treated fish acted as a negative control. Fish challenged with F. columnare and treated with CuSO4 at 4.2 and 2.1 mg L?1 post challenge had mortalities of 6.4% and 18.3%, respectively, compared with the positive control, which had 90.2% mortality. The mortality of challenged fish treated with CuSO4 at 4.2 and 2.1 mg L?1 was significantly different from the positive control. There was no significant difference between the mortalities of the 4.2 and 2.1 mg L?1 treatments. The results suggest that CuSO4 has clear therapeutic value against columnaris infections.  相似文献

The Gastropod Melanoides tuberculatus plays a significant role in hampering fish larval production in earthen ponds. This study investigated use of tobacco waste to assess behavioural and survival responses of M. tuberculatus at different concentrations of tobacco waste solution of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2 g L?1. Mean escape time varied significantly among concentrations (P < 0.05). Escape time decreased in 1‐, 2‐ and 3‐day‐old solutions. Percentage survival decreased significantly with increasing concentrations of tobacco waste solution and exposure time (P < 0.05). Concentrations of 1.75 g L?1 and 2.0 g L?1 had high hazard ratios and low survival rates of gastropods and were the most effective in eradication of M. tuberculatus, hence recommended dose for preparing ponds for stocking. We conclude that tobacco waste solution can be used for control of M. tuberculatus.  相似文献

The effects of ditch size on growth and production of mono‐sex tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in rain fed concurrent rice–fish system were technically and economically evaluated for a period of 4 months. Three different ditch sizes were tried: 5%, 10% and 15% of the total cultivable rice field. The fish fingerlings stocking density (5000 ha?1) and management practices were similar in all plots. The water temperature, dissolve oxygen, pH, Secchi disc visibility, ortho‐phosphate, ammonia nitrogen and alkalinity were found to be in the range of 31.5–31.9°C, 5.10–5.27 mg L?1, 7.56–7.62, 34.81–35.41 cm, 0.88–0.96 mg L?1, 0.014–0.021 mg L?1 and 66.23–69.76 mg L?1, respectively, and all the values were found suitable for tilapia fish farming. Sediment organic matter, available nitrogen and phosphorous were increased significantly (P < 0.05) in all plots after cultivating the fish. Larger ditch size (15% of the total land area) resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) higher specific growth rate, survival and fish production compared with the smaller (5%) and medium (10%) ditch sizes. However, significantly (P < 0.05) higher net income and benefit–cost ratio were obtained in medium ditch size with the values of 2.6% and 3.6% higher than the smaller and larger ditch sizes respectively. It is concluded that rice–fish farming in a rain fed ecosystem of Bangladesh with medium ditch size and stocking density of 5000 ha?1 mono‐sex tilapia can achieve better economic return.  相似文献

Bacterial diseases cause tilapia's high‐mortality outbreak. This study investigated the toxicity of azithromycin (AZT), a macrolide antibiotic that has been considered a possible therapeutic drug for tilapia aquacultural use. The 48‐h acute toxicity (50% lethal concentration, LC50; 48 h) of AZT was determined for Oreochromis niloticus. Thereafter, fish were exposed to 0, 1, 50 and 100 mg L?1 AZT during 14 days (chronic exposure) and measured the haematological variables, the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST) and the concentration of glutathione (GSH), protein carbonyl and lipid peroxidation in the liver; histopathology was analysed the liver, gills and kidneys. The LC50; 48 h was >100 mg L?1. No fish died during chronic exposure. Haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration increased in fish exposed to 50 and 100 mg L?1, and the total number of leucocyte and thrombocyte increased after exposure to 100 mg L?1 AZT, suggesting a stimulation of defence cell production. In the liver, the antioxidant enzyme activities did not change, but GST activity and the GSH level increased in fish exposed to 100 mg L?1 AZT. Oxidative stress did not occur. Histopathological index (HIL) indicates moderate liver damage; minor histological changes in the gill and no change in the kidneys. AZT was considered non‐toxic for O. niloticus after acute exposure and, although it causes moderated histopathology in the liver after chronic exposure, this antibiotic may be an alternative against bacterial infections, depending on its efficacy to control bacterial disease in fish.  相似文献

Sexually mature kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum, captured from its natural habits, the Caspian Sea and the Khoushkrood River, reared at 0.5 g L?1 and 8–13 g L?1 for approximately 1 year in experimental condition, for assessing the effect of salinity on reproduction. Plasma concentrations of sex steroid hormones (17β‐estradiol, testosterone and 17α‐hydroxyprogestrone) were measured in the three stages of gametogenesis. Female kutum held at <0.5 g L?1 or 8–13 g L?1 had no ovulated oocytes in their ovaries. In contrast, males held in captivity were spermiated, similar to their wild counterparts. The average sperm volume of males held at <0.5 g L?1 (2.36 ± 0.46 mL) was lower than males held at 8–13 g L?1 (3.65 ± 0.73 mL) at the end of the experimental period. The highest concentration of testosterone was observed in mid‐gametogenesis in wild fish that was significantly higher than the concentration seen in fish held in either <0.5 g L?1 or 8–13 g L?1. Female kutum showed suppressed steroid hormones in captivity, resulting in failure in the gonad development. However, male kutum adapt well to captivity and showed synchrony in steroid hormone variations with the wild fish, resulting in the testicular development. Results of this study also indicate that salinity plays a minor, but vital, role in reproduction of kutum, a factor that needs to be considered for keeping broodstock of brackish water fish species like kutum.  相似文献
