Antibacterial activity of Punica granatum

Successive petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Punica granatum were tested (in vitro) for their antibacterial activity. The methanolic extract was found to be most effective against all tested microorganisms.     

Molluscicidal and antimicrobial activity of Solanum aculeastrum

The methanolic extract of the fresh root bark and berries of Solanum aculeastrum showed significant activity against host snails of schistosomiasis. The berries extract was more potent with 100% snail kill at 50 ppm. Fractionation increased activity with 100% mortality at 20 ppm. The aqueous and methanolic extracts of the berries showed moderate antimicrobial activity, increasing by fractionation.     

Evaluation of antioxidant effect of extracts of Symphyopappus casarettoi

The ethanolic extract of Symphyopappus casarettoi syn. Eupatorium casarettoi was partionated in hexanic, chloroformic and methanolic fractions. Extract and fractions were tested for their antioxidant activity in vitro and ex vivo assays. The methanolic fraction showed a higher antioxidant potential compared to the others fractions, which was correlated with its total phenol content. In addition, the ethanolic extract and the methanolic fraction attenuated ex vivo iron-induced cell death, quantified by lactate dehydrogenase leakage, and effectively protected against lipid damage induced by iron. These findings suggest that the ethanolic extract of S. casarettoi inflorescence and its methanolic fraction have in vitro and ex vivo antioxidant properties.     

Hypoglycemic effect of Bauhinia cheilandra in rats

The extract of the methanolic leaves of Bauhinia cheilandra (BC) was tested on glucose loaded and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In both tests, the methanolic extract at doses of 300, 600, and 900 mg/kg, has shown a statistically significant and considerable hypoglycemic activity.     

Antibacterial activity of Pulicaria dysenterica extracts

Aqueous, methanolic and chloroformic extracts of Pulicaria dysenterica aerial parts were tested for their antibacterial activity using the disc-diffusion assay technique. The methanolic extract was found to be the most effective extract against three out of six tested bacteria. All of the extracts were active against Vibrio cholera.     

Activity of Berberis aetnensis root extracts on Candida strains

The antifungal activity of methanolic extract and alkaloidal fraction of Berberis aetnensis against Candida species was investigated. The crude extract was active against Candida species, this activity being higher than that of the alkaloidal fraction and berberine.     

Antifeedant activity of Momordica dioica fruit pulp extracts on Spodoptera litura

The hexane extract and ethyl acetate soluble fraction of methanolic extract of the fruit pulp of Momordica dioica exhibited moderate and concentration dependent antifeedant activity against Spodoptera litura.     

Antimicrobial activity of the macrofungus Lepista nuda

The 60% methanolic extract of Lepista nuda exhibited antimicrobial activity.     

Antimicrobial activity of the macrofungus Pholiota adiposa

The 60% methanolic extract of Pholiota adiposa exhibited antimicrobial activity.     

Mast cell stabilising activity of Bacopa monnieri

Successive petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Bacopa monnieri were tested (in vitro) for mast cell stabilising effect. The methanolic fraction exhibited potent activity comparable to disodium cromoglycate, a known mast cell stabiliser.     

Antimicrobial activity of Pithecolobium avaremotemo bark

The Pithecolobium avaremotemo bark methanolic extract exhibited a broad spectrum and high levels of antimicrobial activity.     

Antibacterial activity of Borreria verticillata roots

Borreria verticillata roots methanolic extract exhibited a broad antibacterial activity against multiresistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.     

Wound healing activity of Opuntia ficus-indica

The methanolic extract of Opuntia ficus-indica stems and its hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fractions were evaluated for their wound healing activity in rats. The extract and less polar fractions showed significant effects.     

Cytotoxic activity of the root extract from Myoschilos oblongum

The crude methanolic root extract of Myoschilos oblongum exhibited a significant cytotoxic activity against PZ-HPV-7 human prostate cells. Furthermore, two esters of docosanol were isolated from the CH(2)Cl(2) extract.     

Phytogrowth-inhibitory and antibacterial activity of Verbascum sinuatum

The methanolic extract of Verbascum sinuatum inflorescences and isolated compounds were tested for their antibacterial activity against 13 Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria and for their allelopathic activity against radish.     

Antibacterial and allelopathic activity of methanolic extract from Iris pseudopumila rhizomes

The methanolic extract of rhizomes of Iris pseudopumila was tested for its antibacterial and allelopathic activity. The extract was shown to have antibacterial effects. The allelopathic effect was tested against Raphanus sativus seed germination. The extract caused a decrease in the percentage of seed germination and root and epicotyl growth.     

Effects of extracts from fruit and leaves ofMelia azedarach L. onLocusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.)

Water extracts, methanolic extracts and the petrol ether phase from the fruit and leaves ofMedia azedarach L. were tested against different instar nymphs ofLocusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.) under laboratory conditions. Water extracts caused various degrees of mortality and a significant delay in the development and growth of the locusts. Treatments with 3% concn of water extracts from the fruit and leaves at a rate of 40ml/m² gave 93% and 100% mortalities, respectively, of first instars, and a 3% concn of leaf extract resulted in a mortality of 93.2% of third instars. Antifeedant and/or stomach-poison effect(s) played an important role. MeOH extract had the same efficacy as water extracts, but the petrol ether phase did not show much effect on the locusts.     

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of the topical preparation of Glaucium grandiflorum

The species of Glaucium have been used in Iranian herbal medicine in the treatment of dermatitis. Due to anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Glaucium grandiflorum methanolic extract in i.p. administration, these effects in topical administration were studied using carrageenan-induced edema and formalin test. Several formulations were prepared and the best cream was chosen as vehicle. Piroxicam gel and methyl salicylate ointment were studied as positive control for anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, respectively. The edema inhibition of preparations containing extract at the doses of 1-5% w/w were significantly different from control group. The anti-inflammatory effect of MS4-5% was similar to the effect of piroxicam gel at 3 h after carrageenan injection. Topical preparation containing G. grandiflorum methanolic extract showed analgesic effect in concentrations more than 4% w/w in early phase in formalin test. This activity was observed in concentrations more than 3% w/w in late phase. The topical analgesic activity of extract was less than the analgesic activity of methyl salicylate ointment.     

Antimicrobial activity of Bridelia ferruginea fruit.

Bridelia ferruginea fruit 60% methanolic extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against seven out of eight bacterial isolates at a concentration of 20 mg/ml.     

Antibacterial activity of Piliostigma thonningii stem bark

Piliostigma thonningii stem bark 60% methanolic extract exhibited activity against six out of eight bacterial isolates at a concentration of 20 mg/ml.
