A study was done in Maine to determine the relative importance of winter survival of nematode larvae in pasture and infected carrier animals as sources of infection for susceptible calves. Under the conditions of the experiment, it appeared that winter survivals in pasture of the infective stages of the genera Ostertagia, Cooperia, Nematodirus, and Trichostrongylus were of greater importance than carrier animals as sources of infection for susceptible calves. While animals in plots infected the previous summer and simultaneously allowed to graze alongside infected carrier animals did show more worms than those grazed only in infected plots, these differences were not statistically significant. Both groups had significantly (P greater than 0.01) more worms than did calves grazed only with carrier animals for the period of the experiment (8 weeks). It was also observed that carrier calves with low fecal egg counts (less than 200 eggs/g of feces) introduced in early spring to uncontaminated pasture could produce enough parasitic contamination by early fall to cause fulminating infections in susceptible calves grazing the pasture at the same time. Infected animals that survived clinical disease during their 1st summer developed a strong immunity which limited their acquisition of further infections when they were exposed to severe pasture contamination the following year. 相似文献

Differential diagnosis of Mecistocirrus digitatus infection relies on morphological examination of either eggs in faecal samples or L3 larvae developed in vitro. Technical limitations hinder the practicability of these approaches. Hence, in order to develop a specific diagnostic measure for M. digitatus infection, we determined the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of its ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and designed primers for PCR-based species-specific amplification of the ITS to differentiate between M. digitatus and other common gastrointestinal (GI) nematode species. The newly designed primers amplified a single specific 520 base pair (bp) fragment from the M. digitatus ITS, and its detection limit was as low as 0.001 ng. Further, this sensitivity suggested that the specific fragment could be amplified even from a unicellular egg that collected directly from uteri of an adult M. digitatus female. In fact, we designed a method that employs a small piece of a cover slip and a filter paper by which we could differentially amplify a PCR fragment from a unicellular egg. The reliability of the specific PCR assay was also demonstrated with 10 oval samples that collected from bovine faeces by using sugar flotation method. These data suggested that the specific PCR assay of the ITS region of M. digitatus rDNA could be useful for the identification of GI nematodes. 相似文献

Anthelmintic efficacy of ivermectin against Mecistocirrus digitatus was evaluated in 10 naturally infected zebu calves. Group 1 (n = 5) was not treated, and group 2 (n = 5) was treated SC with 200 micrograms of ivermectin/kg of body weight. Calves were euthanatized 14 or 15 days after treatment. There was 100% overall reduction of M digitatus in treated calves, which was significant (P = 0.0079) compared with reduction in controls. Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus similis, and Trichostrongylus axei were found in controls. Efficacy against these parasites in treated calves was 100%. 相似文献

Summary Three calves, to which had been given100,000 eggs ofTaenia saginata at3 months of age, were significantly more resistant to a challenge infection10 months later than two previously uninfected control calves, although their resistance to reinfection was not complete.
Following their initial infection the three calves developed a strong serum antibody response involving both haemagglutinating
and precipitating antibodies.
There was an increase in the serum globulin concentration during the first11 weeks after initial infection. There appeared to be no direct relationship between the globulin concentrations and the antibody
response.

A noter que cette résistance à une réinfestation n'a pas été totale. A la suite de leur infestation initiale, les trois veaux ont réagi de fa?on marquée aussi bien en ce qui concerne les anticorps hémoagglutinants que précipitants. Summary The activity of albendazole against gastrointestinal helminths in naturally infected calves in the Netherlands was tested. The calves were in their fist grazing season and kept in two groups of ten. One of these groups was grazed alternately with sheep. Five out of each group were drenched with albendazole (7.5 mg/kg) on the day they were housed (November 1). Before and 2, 14, and 28 days after treatment individual faecal samples were taken from all calves and larval cultures were made. Ten calves, six treated and four untreated, were killed for post mortem studies 14 days after treatment The remaining calves were slaughtered 14 days later. The drug was highly effective in reducing the egg output, measured as the number of larvae cultured per gram of faeces. Compared with the untreated calves, the reduction was more than 99% two days after treatment, 100% at 14 days, and 99% after 28 days. It was shown that egg output 28 days after treatment came from worms which had developed from arrested larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi that had survived treatment. Post mortem results showed an efficacy of 100% against adult O. ostertagi, of almost 100% against Trichostrongylus axei, and 100% against adult and larval Cooperia oncophora. Twenty-eight days after treatment, the reduction of arrested early fourth stages of O. ostertagi was 85% in comparison with the untreated calves. Plasma pepsinogen levels became elevated in groups of recipient calves immediately after transplant with adult Ostertagia ostertagi. These rises occurred in both previously parasite-naive calves and in calves which had experienced prior infection terminated with an anthelmintic either seven or 21 days before transplant. From the results it appears that adult O ostertagi play a significant role in the elevated plasma pepsinogen levels associated with bovine ostertagiasis. 相似文献

Calves were infected repeatedly during a period of 6 weeks with Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora, at an age of 3, 6 or 9 months. The inoculations were performed during three periods, February-March, May-June and August-September, to account for possible seasonal effects or effects of larval batches. Observations were done on faecal egg output, antibody titres and weight gains. Calves were slaughtered for post mortem examinations 9 weeks after the start of infections. The influence of age on worm populations and egg output was significant for C. oncophora but not for O. ostertagi. The effect of season or larval batch on worm populations was significant for O. ostertagi but not for C. oncophora. The correlations between worm numbers and several other parameters found for Cooperia were strongly indicative of a process of worm expulsion taking place at the stage of infection (9 weeks after the start of infections) when post mortem examinations were done. Such correlations were absent for Ostertagia. It is concluded that within the range of ages examined here (the range to which first season grazing calves belong), there is no influence of age on Ostertagia populations but a clear effect of age on Cooperia. This difference strongly influences the total faecal egg output of grazing calves and its interpretation. 相似文献

Experimentally induced pneumonic pasteurellosis: dose-response relationships and protection against natural reinfection in calves 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Calves were inoculated intranasally with 2 X 10(6.2) tissue culture infective doses of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, followed in 7 days by intratracheal inoculations with 1 of 4 challenge doses of pathogenic Pasteurella haemolytica. Severity and duration of the ensuing clinical signs of respiratory tract disease were correlated with the challenge dose of bacteria. Calves given 1 X 10(6) colony-forming units (CFU) of bacteria did not develop reliable clinical evidence of disease, whereas those given 1 X 10(8) CFU or 1 X 10(10) CFU of bacteria developed clinical signs of pneumonic pasteurellosis within 12 to 24 hours of bacterial challenge. Severity of clinical signs was equal at the 10(8) and 10(10) doses of bacteria, but duration of clinical signs was greater in calves given the 10(10) dose. Calves given 1 X 10(12) CFU of bacteria developed relatively severe respiratory tract disease in excess of what was necessary for positive clinical detection. Positive correlations were found between the bacterial challenge dose and the height and duration of increased rectal temperature, amount and duration of increases in ocular and nasal discharges, and the subjective evaluation of depressed attitude and appetite. Correlations were not found between challenge dose and respiratory rate or character, or between challenge dose and complete blood cell count. Convalescent calves were resistant to naturally occurring pneumonic pasteurellosis, which caused severe disease in nontreated calves. Adverse effects of P haemolytica were not observed after the first 4 to 15 days after bacterial administration; however, the bacteria were isolated from nasal secretions of convalescent calves 89 to 116 days after bacterial inoculation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The kinetics of free and microgranulated sulfadimidine were compared in milk-fed calves dosed orally (180 mg/kg) in a crossover study. Microgranulation results in delayed absorption of sulfadimidine and poor bioavailability, with the area under the plasma concentration-time curve ( AUC (O-oo)) reduced from 7400 to 3781 μg·h/mL, and maximum plasma concentration ( C max ) reduced from 188.1 ± 39.0 to 84.41 ± 22.6 μg/mL. It is concluded that sulfadimidine microgranulated with long chain fatty acids is not suitable for use in milk-fed calves; the gastrointestinal transit time is too rapid to allow full release of the drug, markedly limiting its bioavailability. In adult animals, or in the young of other animal species in which digesta transit time is slower than in calves, the bioavailability of microgranulated sulfadimidine may be much greater. 相似文献

Dutch Friesian male calves, which received a dose of 100 000 Cooperia spp. larvae at an age of 3 months, displayed a great variability in reaction, measured by number and length of worms, egg output, serum antibodies and liveweight gain. In an experiment with half-sib groups from randomly chosen sires, only the antibody response was significantly different between sire-groups. In a further experiment with half-sibs from two selected sires, egg output, worm numbers, worm length and antibody response differed. A third trial with half-sib groups of the same two sires was carried out under natural conditions of grazing. The residual effect of treatment with ivermectin after experimental reinfection in calves was tested. Twenty-four calves were divided into 6 groups of 4 calves each. All calves received a primary infection of 50,000 larvae of both Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora and 1000 Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae. Calves of group 1 remained untreated, and all other calves were treated 21 days after primary infection (0.2 mg/kg injected subcutaneously). Calves of groups 1 and 2 were slaughtered 7 days later. Calves of groups 3-6 were reinfected with the same number of larvae 3 days, 1, 3 and 6 weeks after treatment respectively. Slaughter was 21 days after reinfection. Based on post-mortem worm counts the efficacy of ivermectin after primary infection was 99.7% for O. ostertagi, 95.1% for C. oncophora and 100% for D. viviparus. A residual effect was present for at least one week, but could not be observed 3 weeks after treatment. 相似文献

Data collected in the Zimbabwean province of Mashonaland-West, in the period 1980-1988, showed that mortality in calves owing to Theileria parva bovis infection (January disease) was significantly lower in animals younger than 7 months than in older cattle. Groups of seven Holstein-Friesian calves from non-immune dams aged approximately 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13 months were infected with a Theileria parva bovis tick-derived stabilate. The dose chosen was lethal for 40% of the calves in the trial. Mortality was highest in the 4-month age group. The reactions in the 7-, 10- and 13-month age groups became progressively milder. The reactions in the 1-month old calves were the least marked, being very mild. The age-related resistance in the youngest calves, as can be concluded from our results, is only of short duration and cannot explain the lower incidence of January disease observed in calves in the field. 相似文献

Cattle were successively infested for 4 years with larval cattle grubs, Hypoderma lineatum, to demonstrate the acquisition of resistance. The effects of host age and dietary-induced state with Vitamin A on susceptibility to infestation and their interactions with effects from previous infestations were also determined.Cattle acquired resistance to infestation after a single infestation. This resistance was not affected by host age for at least 4 years, was not affected by a deficiency of vitamin A, and was effective in the skin and connective tissues of the host. The effects of this acquired resistance were highly variable in degree, were produced primarily during the first 90 days of infestation and increased after repeated provocation to provide nearly complete protection in some animals.Calves and yearlings had innate resistance that decreased with age, was localized in the skin, was impaired by a deficiency of Vitamin A, and resulted in a mean loss of 65–75% of the larvae in an infestation dose of up to 150.The combined effects of the 2 types of resistance reduced the grub-burden in cattle throughout their life. 相似文献

The frequency of congenital hernia was investigated in German Fleckvieh calves being driven up for sale on livestock markets for breeding and fattening calves in Miesbach and Traunstein. Data were collected on 77 livestock auctions in the years 1996 and 1997. Altogether 53,105 calves were examined and 1.8% of these calves showed a congenital umbilical hernia. The incidence of umbilical hernia was significantly influenced by the sex of the calf, the occurrence of multiple births, the market place/market date, the sire and the sire line. Red Holstein blood proportion, lactation number, duration of pregnancy and 305 day milk performance were not of significant importance. Herd milk level did not influence the incidence of congenital umbilical hernia, however, herdmate averages for calves differed significantly in their incidence. The average difference of the market price between male calves affected by congenital umbilical hernia and not affected male calves amounted to 75 DM, in female calves, however, only to 38 DM. The risk, that a congenital umbilical hernia is not closing within an age of 15 months, depends on the width of the hernial opening in the newborn calf. An opening of 4 cm and more has only a healing chance of 50% and less. However, negative effects on fattening and carcass traits could be not found. The genetic influence on congenital umbilical hernia was obvious. The analyses indicated that the incidence of congenital umbilical hernia observed could not be explained by one autosomal recessive gene locus, but it seemed much more likely that more than one gene locus is involved or a mixed multifactorial monogenic mode of inheritance may be the underlying genetic mechanism. Breeders should be aware of the implications of congenital hernias and thus, congenital hernia should get more attention in the selection process of young sires. 相似文献
