One of the critical factors in commercial penaeid shrimp culture production is the availability of postlarvae to stock grow-out ponds. This study investigates the economic feasibility of rearing penaeid shrimp from nauplii to postlarvae (hatchery phase). The facility design used is based on the hatchery operated by Texas A&M university at Galveston, Texas. The Generalized Budget Simulation Model for Aquaculture developed at Texas A&M University was used for the analysis. A ten-year planning horizon was used for the analysis. Six different systems ranging in size from 5 ten-metric ton tanks to 60 ten-metric ton tanks were examined. Annual cost and return budgets were developed for the six systems assuming they operated 6 and 12 months per year. Investment costs, break-even prices and quantities, and net present value were estimated for each system. Results show that commercial hatcheries, using 10-metric ton tanks, could be profitable above and including 20 tanks for those operating only six months annually and above and including 10 tanks for those operating 12 months annually.  相似文献

The cultural practices used to produce fingerling walleye, Stizostedion vitreum, in drainable earthen ponds are described for a state fish hatchery in Nebraska and two federal hatcheries in North Dakota. The ponds were filled 1 to 7 days before D2-D4 (Dl=the day of hatch) walleye fry were stocked. At one hatchery, ponds were sometimes double-cropped, first for production of northern pike, Esoxlucius. The two federal hatcheries fertilized ponds with ground alfalfa hay or pellets, while the standard practice at the Nebraska hatchery was not to fertilize walleye ponds, because of concern that fertilization would result in weed problems and oxygen depletion. One hatchery seeded the ponds with rye grass in the fall. Two of the hatcheries regularly used herbicides to prevent the stranding of fingerlings during harvest and their mortality caused by entangment with net algae, Hydrodicton. When used, herbicide treatment was applied before ponds were filled (AquazineTM) or as needed during the culture interval (AquazineTM) or copper sulfate). Harvesting was done after 24 to 58 days; the extreme range represented variation among hatcheries; the variation among ponds at a given hatchery ranged from 4 to 10 days. Harvest occurred when fingerlings were 25 to 50 mm total length and weighed 1,500-5,440 fish/kg. Harvests ranged from 11,933 to 308,537 fingerlings/ha. Survival ranged from 3 to 104% of the estimated number of fry stocked.  相似文献

Abstract. These analyses of the tilapia fingerling industry in the Philippines focus on the economics of production in different hatchery systems and on fingerling marketing channels. The analyses are based on cross-sectional data from government and private hatcheries in late 1982 and from December 1983 to March 1984. The relative profitabilities of different hatchery systems (land-based and lake-based) are estimated and economies of scale are analysed. Conceptual and methodological issues inherent in analyses based on cross-sectional data are discussed in the context of the extreme difficult standardizing inputs and output from private tilapia hatcheries which are characterized by wide variation in management practices.  相似文献

The oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg 1793) is one of the most important species for shellfish aquaculture worldwide, and many cultivation activities rely on the use of spat produced in hatcheries. The operation of hatcheries and the efficiency of the processes involved remain largely unknown. We designed a protocol to evaluate 31 elements of the different phases of C. gigas spat production to identify critical aspects. Our survey was conducted in four hatcheries located in Mexico. The results showed that hatcheries operate with an overall fair control of processes. Nonetheless, six critical control items and six below-average control items suggest that some practices are inappropriate for producing high-quality spat. For 16 items, at least one hatchery applies a suitable production process, but only for three items all hatcheries use the best alternative. Major concerns are the few oysters used in spawning processes, the lack of controlled crosses either between them or with other oyster lines, and the current lack of genetic tests. Besides, broodstock pedigree is not documented and the genetic variability of spat is unknown. Additional concerns are that hatcheries have no controls in place for gamete production estimates or for fertilization, hatching, settlement, and survival rates. The protocol seemed adequate to identify the major difficulties faced by hatcheries. These findings set the basis for the improvement of production processes in hatcheries. Potential areas deserving further research are also underlined.  相似文献

Strategies to reduce operating costs at an expanding shrimp hatchery in NW Mexico are presented for a period covering 3 years (2004–2006). The hatchery increased its greenhouse-type larval rearing halls from three (50 tanks, total water volume 996 m3) in 2004, to five (70 tanks, water volume 1,396 m3) in 2005, and to seven (94 tanks, total water volume 1,876 m3) in 2006. Production increased from 400 million postlarvae in 2004 to 579 million in 2005 to 760 million in 2006, but operating costs increased only 6% during this period and the unit cost for postlarvae was 44% lower. Administration expenses were the highest variable cost, but restructuring the company reduced them from 35% in 2004, to 29 in 2005 and to 21% in 2006. Feed was the second largest variable cost, reduced from 44 to 36 to 31 through improved feeding practices, changes in feed composition, and bulk purchases of commercial feeds. Costs for propane and the workforce increased, in part from higher consumption and additional staff and higher salaries to retain the trained workforce. Competition will continue to lower the market price for shrimp postlarvae, forcing hatcheries into a permanent improvement process. Increasing costs for energy will require investments in energy-saving technologies. Improved sanitation and strict bio-security procedures will increase the survival rate, thereby reducing unit costs still further.  相似文献

Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is an important restraint to production of salmonids in aquaculture globally. In order to implement efficacious mitigation strategies for control of this disease, it is important to understand infection routes under current production systems. IPN virus has been shown to be transmitted vertically in Rainbow trout, from broodstock to fingerlings in hatcheries, and there is circumstantial evidence suggesting that vertical transmission can also occur in Atlantic salmon, in addition to horizontal transmission between grow‐out fish in farms. In this study, we show that the smolt carries infection with IPN from hatchery to the marine farm. We do this by comparing sequences from fish groups taken both in hatcheries and on corresponding marine grow‐out farms. We use statistical analysis to prove that sequences obtained from the same fish group in both hatchery and marine farm are more similar than sequences obtained from random fish groups on hatcheries and marine farms.  相似文献

During the first 2 years of larval rearing trials with Atlantic bluefin tuna, survival was a challenging issue. As bacterial colonization of the gut has been shown to play a key role for other species, we studied the profiles of the microbiota associated with individual larvae at different stages in three distant hatcheries. The Bacterial Community Profile (BCP) was quantified based on PCR‐DGGE analyses of partial amplicons from 16S rDNA. Considerable individual variability in BCP was observed before onset of feeding, and the BCP did not show regular fluctuation during ontogenesis. Microalgae were added to the rearing tanks in two of the three hatcheries, but it was not possible to distinguish the effect of location from the effect of algal addition on BCP. In one hatchery, the larvae were reared either with algal addition or in mesocosm, but due to high individual variability, no significant difference in BCP was detected between the two groups. It was hypothesized that this variability was caused by differences in health, physiological status and developmental stage of the larvae. A practical conclusion from the study is the need to analyse a considerable number of individuals to reflect statistically significant differences between the microbial communities associated with rearing groups.  相似文献

Abstract

Construction and operating costs for three common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) hatcheries in Florida, USA, are illustrated. Hypothetical capacities and targets of the three hatcheries (Scenarios I, II and III respectively) were 615, 000 juveniles (8 ‐ 10 g in weight) for stock enhancement, and 1, 275, 000 and 3, 000, 000 juveniles (1‐g in weight) for commercial grow‐out. Estimated production costs were lower than for many marine finfish species. The 20‐year mean costs per 1, 000 juveniles were estimated to be $324, $215, and $159, for hatcheries I, II, and III respectively, and the initial capital investments were $731, 660, $1, 162, 460, and $1, 896, 0301, respectively. Major cost items of annual production were labor (22 ‐ 33%), supplies (14 ‐ 20%), fixed costs (15 ‐ 17%), and interest (13 ‐ 15%). The most profitable hatchery was the 3 million 1‐g juvenile hatchery due to the hatchery size effect, with a net present value (NPV) of $1, 760, 000, an internal rate of return (ERR) of 81%, a payback period of 3.6 years, and a profitability index of $2.86 for every dollar invested. Possible cost reductions to increase financial profitability were discussed.  相似文献

The disadvantages of hand counting hatchery produced juveniles of Macrobrachium rosenbergii have been overcome by development of a high speed opto-electronic counter. The hydraulic, mechanical and electronic designs of the Type B counter are described. The counter, extremely fast in principle, is being used and tested under commercial hatchery conditions. Its practical speed of operation and accuracy are expected to exceed 100 000 juveniles per hour and 95%, respectively.About 80% of juveniles show some morphological damage but most of this probably originates in the hatchery rearing tanks. Tests show that slight additional damage is caused only to the antennules of juveniles passing through the counter but this does not affect their subsequent growth rate and survival. It is suggested that density dependent aggression in hatchery tanks is the principal cause of damage. Counter B is shown to be suitable and safe for counting freshwater prawn juveniles. This counter could be adapted to count other macroscopic aquatic organisms via suitable dimensional scaling. No other counters of this type and purpose appear to exist.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents a study of operating costs in shrimp hatcheries. Size effects are presented for fixed, variable, unitary, and marginal costs. Cost structures by functional production department and by cost‐category are discussed for a hypothetical 100‐million postlarvae/month hatchery in an industrialized country, and compared to those of a hatchery in a developing country. Health management issues, mainly measures commonly used to manage bacterial diseases, and their economic impact are discussed, focusing on the trade off between survival rates and sanitation down‐time.

Salaries and benefits represent the largest cost‐component (37%) for hatcheries in industrialized countries, while feeds and operating supplies constitute the most important costs in developing countries (60%). The need to import hatchery feeds and other operating supplies into developing countries works against savings from lower labor costs typical of developing countries.

Total fixed costs depend on the size of a hatchery and are constant for all possible levels of output. Average fixed cost per unit (thousand postlarvae) can be reduced by producing high postlarval outputs. Hatcheries in areas with seasonal shrimp crops face the challenge of covering fixed costs with revenue from a short production season. Hatcheries with large fixed costs can operate in a cost‐efficient manner only by producing high levels of output. Average total cost and average variable cost curves follow a U‐shaped curve, in which costs first decline as output increases, then reach a minimum, and finally increase as output increases above a point of diminishing returns.

In hatcheries total costs are independent of larval survival, but lower output resulting from low survival increases unit costs. This effect is more pronounced at lower levels of output. Bacterial diseases decrease survival rates and increase unit costs.  相似文献

Results of a 1‐year intensive monitoring of Vibrio bacteria, as thiosulphate citrate billar salt sucrose (TCBS) counts, in a hatchery for molluscs, are presented. Surface seawater, well seawater, tap water from a freshwater well, microalgae system, including pasteurized well seawater, f/2 medium, starter cultures of eight micro algal species, mass‐produced microalgae and compressed air were studied as possible sources of Vibrio. Additionally, recently collected broodstock of the catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus (Sowerby II 1842) was also subjected for investigation for their possible role in discharging Vibrio during spawning. Efficiency of a cartridge–ultraviolet (UV)‐filtration system and of a steam gun employed for sterilizing tanks, hoses and utensils was also determined. Results indicated that Vibrio were present in surface seawater throughout the year. In well seawater these bacteria were only found during the first 5 months soon after construction of the well and before commencement of continuous operations, but not after this period. Vibrio was never detected in pasteurized well seawater, f/2 medium, starter cultures of microalgae and compressed air. However, mass‐produced microalgae contained Vibrio, possibly as a result of the use of contaminated tap water for washing and rinsing the fibreglass culture tanks. Scallop broodstock was found to be an important source of Vibrio in the hatchery. Biopsy on female gonads of live organisms demonstrated higher numbers of colony‐forming units than male gonads. At spawning, Vibrio was released into water, producing bacterial blooms in tanks after 24 h. The cartridge–UV‐filteration system was not sufficient to eliminate the bacteria from seawater, but the steam gun proved to be a good tool to eliminate Vibrio biofilms on tank walls or tools used in the hatchery. Some recommendations are given, which could be useful for other mollusc hatcheries.  相似文献

The large-scale spatial patterns of straying of marked chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), produced at hatcheries in the Columbia River (north-west USA) are described. Straying rates were extremely variable among hatcheries (from 1% to 95%). Fish produced near the mouth of the river strayed more commonly than those produced farther upriver. While the large-scale straying patterns were well explained by the distance between the hatchery of origin and alternative destinations, substantial deviations from this pattern were observed at smaller scales. Three distinct areas of origin were identified and most straying occurred between hatcheries and natural spawning grounds within each area. The location of the stream where the hatchery of origin is located affects the patterns of straying. Fish reared at hatcheries in the main stem of the river did not stray into tributaries as often as predicted by a model based exclusively on linear distance between alternative locations. Likewise, fish released from large tributaries strayed to main stem hatcheries less often than predicted by the model. Fish produced at hatcheries on north bank tributaries appeared to stray less into southern streams than fish released from southern streams. These findings indicate that salmon are more likely to stray to spawning areas similar to their natal site than to dissimilar sites, in addition to the tendency to stray to nearly sites. In addition to the general patterns, examination of data from two types of transplants indicated that there is a genetic component to homing/straying behaviour within the watershed. However, salmon transplanted into the Columbia River watershed from elsewhere showed homing precision comparable to that of local fish, although they retained their ancestral marine distribution.  相似文献

The French oyster farming industry relies almost exclusively on juveniles collected from the natural environment; the supply of spat produced by hatcheries is low, about 10 % of the industry's requirements. Development through selective breeding of oyster stocks which are better suited for aquaculture purposes, is likely to reverse this tendency since only hatcheries will be able to supply such animals. Scallop farming, which at present is poorly developed in France, relies exclusively on hatchery produced spat. Although hatchery technology is constantly being improved, significant production problems remain which must be solved before hatcheries become a major supplier of juveniles for the industry. This paper describes the present state of hatchery technology in France based on experimental results obtained with the great scallop Pecten maximus and the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, over the past ten years. Compared to the great scallop, the Pacific oyster has higher D larva yields (60 % for C. gigas vs. 30 % for P. maximus) and a faster larval growth rate (10 μm·d−1 for C. gigas vs. 5 μm·d−1 for P. maximus). However, Pacific oysters have a greater heterogeneity during larval development and higher mortality rates (40 % for C. gigas vs. 25 % for P. maximus) which produce lower overall yields of pediveliger larvae ready-to-set for Pacific oysters (15 %) compared to the great scallop (30 %). Development of continuous larval and post-larval culture methods along with development of continuous phytoplankton technology offers one of the most promising methods to improve molluscan hatchery techniques.  相似文献

The occurrence of Flavobacterium psychrophilum at four rainbow trout hatcheries was investigated to provide more knowledge about the reservoirs and transmission of this bacterium. Broodstock were sampled at stripping (including both unfertilized and fertilized eggs), and the offspring were then sampled at the eyed egg and fry stages. Water and surface samples (e.g. hatchery trays) were also sampled. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was found in ovarian fluid and milt, indicating that broodstock may serve as a reservoir and are latent carriers of the pathogen. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was not found on or inside eggs, but further egg studies will be necessary to elucidate the possibility of vertical transmission of the pathogen. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was isolated from water samples, but only from water that had been in close contact with farmed rainbow trout or eggs. Flavobacterium psychrophilum isolates were characterized and compared with well-characterized strains, using degradation of elastin, serotype and ribotype profiles. Different ribotypes of F. psychrophilum were found between hatcheries, but a common ribotype A was found at all four hatcheries. Different ribotypes were found in broodstock without clinical disease, whereas only a few ribotypes (mostly ribotype A) were found in diseased fry. The same ribotype A was found in broodstock, in water samples from hatchery trays and in fry, which suggests the possibility of transmission of F. psychrophilum between broodstock and offspring.  相似文献

The effect of supplementing dehydrated seaweed Ulva clathrata (20 g/kg) in the squid fraction of a formulated fresh diet on the reproductive performance of Litopenaeus vannamei broodstock was evaluated in two commercial hatcheries (A and B). The origin of broodstock, use of ablation on females, tank/culture conditions (for maturation, spawning, and larval rearing) were different between hatcheries. Daily mortality was higher (< .01) for females in the control group compared to Ulva‐fed group of hatchery A, where females were ablated. No differences in mortality were found for unablated females in hatchery B, or with males from either hatchery. In hatchery A, broodstock fed Ulva produced more eggs (an increase in +5% compared to control, < .05) and nauplii per female (+18%, < .01). In hatchery B, broodstock fed Ulva produced significantly more eggs (+26%, < .05) and nauplii per day (+33%, < .05). In hatcheries A and B, eggs from broodstock fed Ulva had increased hatching rates (+13 and +7%, respectively, < .001 in both cases). The number of spawns per day had a tendency to be higher in broodstock fed Ulva in both hatcheries, but the difference did not reach statistical significance (+14% for hatchery A and +20% for hatchery B). Dehydrated U. clathrata appears therefore as a functional additive in L. vannamei maturation diets that enhances the reproductive performance at commercial scale, regardless of the management conditions.  相似文献

The mussel industry in Europe is facing two major problems: scarcity in wild seed supply in some regions and loss of commercial quality during the spawning season in other areas. The solution to these problems could be seed production in hatcheries. In addition, seed production in hatcheries would also allow the production of triploid individuals, with consequent benefits for the producer. This requires broodstock conditioning, to obtain mussel seed outside the natural season. In this study, the effects of photoperiod and the duration of the conditioning period were examined on the gametogenesis and spawning of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck) in a hatchery. The results obtained indicate that the conditioning of this mussel is possible in a hatchery by supplying a sufficient amount of food and increasing the water temperature. It was shown that gametogenesis of conditioned mussels was dependent on the duration of the conditioning period. Spawning, besides being dependent on the duration of the conditioning period, also appears to be dependent on photoperiod, although these results are not clear enough. This supports the hypothesis that gametogenesis and spawning are regulated by different physiological mechanisms.  相似文献

Abstract. The development of small-scale hatcheries is placed in perspective with olher commercial methods of fish seed production, private and public, in the north-east region of Thailand. Case studies of six small-scale hatcheries operated by farmers in this region are presented with details of the production, costs and returns of these farms in relation to their size, location, species of fish produced, amount of capital invested and marketing and sales strategies, Rates of return were found to be favourable, with the exception of a group-based hatchery. The relationship between the production of carp and tilapia fry. which is believed tn be incompatible under present systems, is discussed. The wider implications of the role of small-scale hatcheries to provide fish seed for farmers in rural areas and the future of public sector involvement are considered.  相似文献

Effluents from three fish hatcheries were monitored for the discharge and subsequent downstream distribution of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). Samples of springwater and surface water, and tissues from salmonid and non-salmonid fish were assayed for IPNV. Water samples were processed to recover virus by adsorption to an electropositive, microporous filter matrix. No IPNV was detected in surface water collected above fish hatcheries or in hatchery springwater supplies. The virus could be detected for at least 19.3 km below the point of effluent discharge from hatcheries and the prevalence of IPNV infection in stream-resident fish was 2.8%.  相似文献

The world's fish species are under threat from habitat degradation and over‐exploitation. In many instances, attempts to bolster stocks have been made by rearing fish in hatcheries and releasing them into the wild. Fisheries restocking programmes have primarily headed these attempts. However, a substantial number of endangered species recovery programmes also rely on the release of hatchery‐reared individuals to ensure long‐term population viability. Fisheries scientists have known about the behavioural deficits displayed by hatchery‐reared fish and the resultant poor survival rates in the wild for over a century. Whilst there remain considerable gaps in our knowledge about the exact causes of post‐release mortality, or their relative contributions, it is clear that significant improvements could be made by rethinking the ways in which hatchery fish are reared, prepared for release and eventually liberated. We emphasize that the focus of fisheries research must now shift from husbandry to improving post‐release behavioural performance. In this paper we take a leaf out of the conservation biology literature, paying particular attention to the recent developments in reintroduction biology. Conservation reintroduction techniques including environmental enrichment, life‐skills training, and soft release protocols are reviewed and we reflect on their application to fisheries restocking programmes. It emerges that many of the methods examined could be implemented by hatcheries with relative ease and could potentially provide large increases in the probability of survival of hatchery‐reared fish. Several of the necessary measures need not be time‐consuming or expensive and many could be applied at the hatchery level without any further experimentation.  相似文献

The use of the solitary diatom Chaetoceros gracilis as the exclusive food for Penaeus stylirostris and P. vannamei protozoeal larvae produced high survival rates in 40 m3 tanks at a commercial shrimp hatchery. The diatom was maintained in the laboratory at 25–26°C and grew vigorously in the hatchery tanks at 28–30°C.Simple and inexpensive procedures for maintaining stock cultures of C. gracilis and for growth of cultures in the laboratory and hatchery were developed. A problem encountered in the hatchery tanks was the occasional development of a high-density bloom followed by its collapse. This resulted in mass larval mortality. Techniques to maintain the diatoms within desirable concentrations, and to prevent larval mortality if diatom concentrations fell short of or exceeded these limits, are described.  相似文献
