The radial variation of ring width and wood density was studied in cork oaks ( Quercus suber) using microdensitometry. The observations were made in young never debarked cork oaks (30–40 years of age) and in mature trees under cork production (37–60 years of age). The cork oak wood is very dense (mean ring density 0.86 g.cm ?3, between 0.79 g.cm ?3 and 0.97 g.cm ?3) with a small intra-ring variability (mean earlywood density 0.80 g.cm ?3 and latewood density 0.90 g.cm ?3). The density components decreased from pith to bark more rapidly until the 15th ring, and then only slightly. There were no significant differences in the mean density components between never debarked trees and trees under cork production but their outwards decrease was accentuated in the never debarked trees. The annual growth was high, with a ring width mean of 3.9 mm (4.2 mm in the first 30 years) and the latewood represented 57% of the annual growth. 相似文献

The radial variation in wood density in Acacia melanoxylon R. Br. was studied using microdensitometry by sampling 20 trees with a 40-cm diameter class at four sites in Portugal. The measurements were taken from pith to bark at breast height. A. melanoxylon had an average ring density of 0.607 g cm ?3, ranging from 0.556 to 0.630 g cm ?3. The mean growth was 6.0 mm year ?1. Latewood corresponded, on average, to 34 % of the ring width. Between-tree variability at each site was the main source of variation in the density components, representing between 30 and 54 % of the total variation. Between-sites variability represented from 0 to 21 % of the total variation in density components. The environmental effects (site related) were more pronounced on latewood, while the genetic effect (tree related) was more evident in earlywood. Ring width, latewood percentage and heterogeneity index were independent from site, trees in site and age effects. The values of wood density and radial growth revealed that A. melanoxylon can be important as a commercial timber species in Portugal. 相似文献

? Context The correlation between tree ring width and density and short-term climate fluctuations may be a useful tool for predicting response of wood formation process to long-term climate change. ? Aims This study examined these correlations for different radiata pine genotypes and aimed at detecting potential genotype by climate interactions. ? Methods Four data sets comprising ring width and density of half- and full-sib radiata pine families were used. Correlations with climate variables were examined, after the extraction of the effect of cambial age. ? Results Cambial age explained the highest proportion of the ring to ring variation in all variables. Calendar year and year by family interaction explained a smaller but significant proportion of the variation. Rainfall had a positive correlation with ring width and, depending on test site, either a negative or positive correlation with ring density. Correlations between temperature during growing season and ring density were generally negative. ? Conclusion Climate variables that influence ring width and wood density can be identified from ring profiles, after removing the cambial age effect. Families can be selected that consistently show desirable response to climate features expected to become prevalent as a result of climate change. 相似文献

There has been a decline in tree growth since the operation of factories at Pinus thunbergii forests around a petrochemical industrial complex in Korea. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of air
pollution on tree ring width and ring density of Pinus thunbergii. Soft X-ray densitometrical method was used. Decline of ring width was the highest during 3 years immediately after the operation
of factories. The percentage of decrease was almost bigger immediately after operation as compared with before. Maximum density
(MAXD), and the difference (DD) between maximum density and minimum density (MIND) generally decreased since operation of
factories, while minimum density increased in the beginning of operation of factories. There was a significant correlation
between ring width and high temperature, and precipitation in the beginning of growing season, respectively. There was also
a negative correlation between annual mean concentration of SO 2 and ring width at 5% level ( r=−0.627 *). It is suggested that the decline of ring width after operation of factories was due to compound factors of air pollution
and climate. The effect of other factors should be still more studied.

This study quantified and compared intra-tree and inter-tree variations in ring width and wood density components in balsam fir ( Abies balsamea) grown in Quebec, Canada. In addition, the study examined correlations between ring width and wood density components at different stem positions from the stump level to the stem top. Ring width and wood density components of individual rings were measured by X-ray densitometry. Both the intra- and inter-tree variations in balsam fir are large, but the inter-tree variation is relatively smaller than the intra-tree variation. Much of the intra-tree variation is due to the radial variation, whereas the axial variation is much smaller. Compared to ring width and its components, wood density characteristics show a considerably smaller variation at both the inter- and intra-tree level. In almost all wood characteristics studied (except for latewood width), the intra- and inter-tree variations are more or less influenced by tree age. Cambial age explains more intra-tree variation in wood density components than ring width, whereas more intra-tree variation in ring width components is due to ring width. Cambial age and ring width explain a comparable percentage of variation in ring density. Only a few of the correlations between ring width and wood density components vary significantly with stem position from the stump to the stem top at the inter-tree level. In balsam fir, a negative correlation between ring density and ring width is significant in the butt log, but the correlation decreases to an insignificant level at and above a height of 3.0 m. 相似文献

Abstract This study focused on the amount of sapwood and its variation by means of computed tomographic (CT) imaging. Twenty-four trees were selected from four Norway spruce [ Picea abies (L.) Karst.] stands in north-eastern France, varying in age, density and fertility. In each stand, sampled trees represented the dominant, co-dominant and suppressed strata. The heartwood/sapwood boundary was detected from the CT images, and the heartwood and sapwood amount and their variations were then evaluated. At the within-tree level sapwood width was relatively constant along the tree stem above the butt swelling and below the living crown. The between-tree sapwood width variations were partially explained by the total cross-sectional area of living branches. This result opens up the possibility of investigating within-tree allometric relationships. Sapwood width was found to be highly correlated with tree slendemess (tree height/breast height diameter) and with the relative height of the crown. This suggests that sapwood width could be readily predicted from conventional forest inventory measurements. The number of sapwood rings within the stem was largely dependent on cambial age, and could be determined dynamically using the concept of mean lifetime of sapwood rings. 相似文献

Tree growth and wood density are influenced by forest management. Nevertheless, few studies have evaluated their variability responses to fertilizer treatments at inter-annual, inter-tree and stand-production levels. Therefore, the annual ring width (RW) and density (RD) of sixty 17-year-old-Pinus taeda trees fertilized with six doses of composted pulp-mill sludge (CPMS) were analyzed. Ten trees for each treatment were felled and from which wood discs were taken at different trunk heights. The annual RW and RD were provided by X-ray microdensitometry, synchronized and the trunk basic specific gravity (SGB) and biomass calculated. The effects of CPMS treatments were explored using interaction of variables RW and RD with cambial age, diameter, trunk SGB and biomass production. Trees treated with CPMS grow faster, increasing their biomass (up to 108%), presenting lower wood density values (significant up to the 6th year) and reaching the mature wood later than untreated trees. Furthermore, the potential use of RW and RD in allometric equations showed good accuracy to predict trunk SGB and biomass. Altogether, our results indicated that ring width and density revealed the impacts of fertilization treatment on wood quality and production. Our study also provides useful information for forest managers on the fertilization monitoring process. 相似文献

? Introduction Siberian larch ( Larix sibirica) is a highly climate sensitive species. Presently, the Altay Mountains is covered by widespread forests dominated by Siberian larch and thus has a great potential for dendroclimatological studies. However, tree-ring network of the Altay Mountains has not yet been well developed. The development of the new chronologies and the knowledge about the influence of climatic variables on tree growth is needed. ? Method X-ray densitometric techniques were applied to obtain ring width (RW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) of Siberian larch from two upper tree line sites in the Altay Mountains, China. Climatic responses in ring widths and maximum latewood densities from the Altay Mountains (China, Russia, and Mongolia) were investigated by simple correlation analyses. To assess the common growth forces among the individual sites of the Altay Mountains, simple correlation, principal component analyses, and spatial correlation analysis were applied over the common period of the chronologies. ? Results Ring width and maximum latewood density increases with decreasing precipitation, increasing temperature from late spring to late summer during the growing season. Based on the results of principal component analyses and spatial correlation analysis, summer temperature (June?CJuly) is the most important forces on the Siberian larch growth of the Altay Mountains. The growth of Siberian larch in the Altay Mountains captures the current warming trend. The growth of Siberian larch did not clearly lose its sensitivity under most recent warming in our study areas. ? Conclusions The new MXD chronologies is presently the longest, absolutely dated, tree-ring density record yet developed from China. The climate response analysis shows that the RW and MXD of Siberian larch have strong responses to temperature in the growing season. Thus, MXD and RW of Siberian larch provides the best information for climate reconstruction in the warm season. Tree-rings of Siberian larch allow detecting the recently observed warming trend and putting it into the long-term climatic context in the Altay Mountains, due to the strong growth sensitivity to temperature change. 相似文献

Pressler cores of young clones of Quercus petraea and Q. roburwere analysed from two sites in Germany. Variation of wood colour(defined by the CIELAB system), density and heartwood ellagitanninswas examined between clones, species and sites. Similar studieswere made of cores from another trial of 20 half-sib familiesof parent trees deriving from five German forests. The resultsfrom both the clonal and progeny trials indicate that heartwoodellagitannin content and wood density are under strong geneticcontrol, while sapwood and heartwood colour are less so. A largeproportion of between-clone variation in wood density and ellagitanninlevels occurred between the two species, while these propertiesvaried little among ramets of the same clone grown on two contrastingsites, despite a difference in growth rates. A large proportionof the total variation among progeny was attributed to forestorigins and could not be attributed clearly to either geneticor environmental causes because of limitations of the samplingdesign 相似文献

Budburst, budset, leaf yellowing, growth, and frost damage wereassessed on 2- to 4-year-old transplants of 16 provenances ofsessile oak ( Quercus petraea) collected in six European countriesand grown in Scotland. There were significant differences indates of budburst between provenances. Provenances from Franceand Austria burst bud earlier than the others ( P > 0.05). Budburst date was negatively correlated with altitude of provenanceorigin but positively correlated with latitude, indicating thatsouthern provenances burst bud earlier than northern provenancesand are therefore more prone to spring frost damage. Although there were no significant differences of growth betweenprovenances, French provenances tended to grow later in autumnthan provenances originating in other countries. Consequentlyplants from these French provenances were more badly damagedby autumnal frosts ( P > 0.05) than plants from other provenances.Budset and leaf yeljowing in late September were positivelycorrelated. 相似文献

Cryopreservation of selected genotypes of European chestnut and cork oak was carried out in two laboratories in a project
involving conservation of field collections. Plant material was selected on the basis of disease resistance (chestnut), growth
habit, phytosanitary performance and cork quality (cork oak). The cryopreservation technique comprised of vitrification of
shoot apices isolated from in vitro stock shoot cultures (chestnut) and somatic embryos (cork oak). Forty-three out of 46
chestnut genotypes assayed survived the freezing process, but only 63% recovered their capacity to produce new shoots. After
completion of multiplication and rooting steps, the surviving shoots produced plants that were morphologically identical to
those derived from non-supercooled material. All 51 cork oak genotypes withstood freezing and were able to produce new somatic
embryos through a process of secondary embryogenesis. Multiplication and germination of the recovered embryos enabled production
of plants that were morphologically identical to those derived from non-supercooled material. In light of the results obtained,
long-term cryopreservation of these species is feasible, thereby ensuring conservation of valuable genotypes during field
evaluation. 相似文献

The frost hardiness of 16 European provenances of sessile oak Quercus petraea (Matt.)Liebl. originating from six Europeancountries was examined from autumn until budburst in springusing the method of relative conductivity. There were significant differences of frost hardiness betweenprovenances and a strong relationship between phenology andfrost hardiness. In spring, provenances that burst bud earlydehardened earlier than provenances that burst bud later. Inautumn, provenances that stopped growing early were more frosthardy than provenances that continued to grow. The interprovenance ranges of frost hardiness were greatestin spring and autumn and least in midwinter. Consequently, itwas not possible to demonstrate significant differences of frosthardiness between provenances in December and January. Overall, German, Polish and Danish provenances were more frosthardy than French, Austrian and British provenances. Frenchprovenances were least hardy at all times. 相似文献

Radial variation in sap flux density across the sapwood was assessed by the heat field deformation method in several trees of Quercus pubescens Wild., a ring-porous species. Sapwood depths were delimited by identifying the point of zero flow in radial patterns of sap flow, yielding tree sapwood areas that were 1.5-2 times larger than assumed based on visual examinations of wood cores. The patterns of sap flow varied both among trees and diurnally. Rates of sap flow were higher close to the cambium, although there was a significant contribution from the inner sapwood, which was greater (up to 60% of total flow) during the early morning and late in the day. Accordingly, the normalized difference between outer and inner sapwood flow was stable during the middle of the day, but showed a general decline in the afternoon. The distribution of sap flux density across the sapwood allowed us to derive correction coefficients for single-point heat dissipation sap flow measurements. We used daytime-averaged coefficients that depended on the particular shape of the radial profile and ranged between 0.45 and 1.28. Stand transpiration calculated using the new method of estimating sapwood areas and the radial correction coefficients was similar to (Year 2003), or about 25% higher than (Year 2004), previous uncorrected values, and was 20-30% of reference evapotranspiration. We demonstrated how inaccuracies in determining sapwood depths and mean sap flux density across the sapwood of ring-porous species could affect tree and stand transpiration estimates. 相似文献

Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is one of the best timber conifers providing long sawnwood components. Original from North America, it has been planted in Europe on approximately 550 thousand ha. Twenty Douglas-fir trees growing in two sites in Portugal were studied regarding ring analysis, heartwood, sapwood and bark development, and taper. The radial growth rate was 7.1 and 6.6 mm year−1 at stem base for 45- and 50-year-old trees, respectively, in the two sites. Initial growth rate was slower, increasing until about 20 years and decreasing afterwards. Heartwood proportion represented on average 49% of the cross section in the lower part of the stem and decreased upwards. Heartwood formation was estimated to start at a cambial age of 8–9 years and increasing by 0.7–0.9 rings year−1. Sapwood width was on average 75 mm at stem base, decreasing upwards. Bark was 26–27 mm thick at stem base, where it represented 15% of the cross-sectional area and decreased to 3–5 mm at the top. Stemwood and heartwood tapers were on average 15 mm m−1 in the lower stem part and 21 and 18 mm m−1, respectively, in the upper part. Douglas-fir showed a good potential for the mountain areas of Portugal, and under the silvicultural conditions of both stands the trees presented ring homogeneity, small conicity and low taper suitable for long wood components. 相似文献

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) has a dense wood that allows high-quality uses. In the present work, we study the influence of vessel characteristics,
measured through image analysis and optical microscopy, on wood density, measured using X-ray microdensitometry, on 40-year-old
trees. Vessel area increases with cambial age (5403–33064 μm 2), while wood density decreases (1.229–0.836 g/cm 3). The number of vessels is relatively constant at 6 vessels/mm 2, while vessel proportion in cross-section increases from 3.3% near the pith to 20.5% near the bark. In growth rings closest
to the pith, with high wood density and low vessel area, the relationship between the two variables is linear ( R
2 = −32.1%, P < 0.01) but with increasing tree age and vessel size, the wood density remains rather constant, suggesting that decreases
in density might compromise mechanical support of the tree at a stage when the increase in cross-sectional area alone might
not provide mechanical stability. Other anatomical characteristics not considered in this study, like large xylem rays that
increase with cambial age, may be responsible for the constant density. 相似文献

This study reconstructed the distribution of minimum July temperature from annual ring widths in the southwest of Japan. The estimated temperature distribution was about 1°C lower than the measured temperature distribution when the actual temperatures were high, but was about 1°C higher when the actual temperatures were low. In other words, the fluctuation range of the estimated temperatures was smaller than that of the actual temperatures. However, the two distributions tended to match the mean temperature. Reconstruction of the spatial distribution of the past climate will be possible if old tree-ring samples (more than 200 years) are obtained from many sites. 相似文献

Oak decline is attributable to predisposing conditions of both biotic and abiotic origin, arid to numerous insects, pathogens, and abiotic events that act as intermediate or ultimate agents of mortality. The precise causal factors vary with circumstances, but the fundamental role of the tree genotype in the process appears to be one of predisposition. Trees are predisposed to oak decline when they are genetically incapable of surviving the stresses natural to the habitats they occupy. Quercus rubra is discussed as a ease study for which there is a considerable amount of genetic and ecological information. This species is characterized by (1) unusual sensitivity in growth to small-scale environmental heterogeneity and (2) unusually high levels of within-population variation in growth rate. Using growth rate as the best-available surrogate measure of ecological fitness, it is clear that high levels of genetic variability are important, even necessary, for the ecological success of populations of this species. Differential adaptation of genotypes to microsites within even very small areas is likely. To minimize susceptibility to oak decline, forest practices should favour (1) the maintenance of high levels of genetic variation, (2) the use of local provenances in artificial regeneration, and (3) large seedling populations. A further implication is that high rates of seedling mortality in plantations may be normal and even desirable for long-term forest health. 相似文献
