Three of 7 principal calves, after a challenge of immunity exposure by bites of bluetongue (BT) virus-infected Culicoides variipennis, became latently infected with BT virus. These calves were born to heifers infected with the homologous virus by bites of C variipennis at 60 or 120 days' gestation. Latent BT virus infection was detected by isolation of BT virus from washed erythrocyte samples obtained from the calves at 57, 100 to 102, 200 to 202, 300 to 302, and 400 to 402 days after challenge of immunity and from 1 of the calves over 5 years after challenge of immunity. The 3 latently infected calves were healthy; 2 were immunologically competent and 1 was immunologically incompetent to develop detectable BT virus antibodies in their blood. Bluetongue virus infection was detected (by viral isolation) in 2 other principal calves during the challenge of immunity, but they were not considered latently infected. The latter 2 calves were immunologically incompetent to develop detectable BT virus antibodies.  相似文献

A Holstein-Friesian bull and three Holstein-Friesian cows were seronegative for bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus but were persistently infected with the virus. Virus was isolated from buffy coat cells and nasal and lacrimal secretions during their lifetime, and they remained free of clinical signs of BVD. The three cows were pregnant when purchased, and they gave birth to full-term calves. One calf lived only a few hours, one calf became ill and died within a few days, and one calf became ill and was euthanatized within a few weeks. One cow was then bred and became pregnant but aborted a 7-month fetus. A second cow was bred approximately 5 months after parturition but did not conceive. The third cow was necropsied 6 weeks after calving, because of loss of weight. Although the bull's semen contained BVD virus when seropositive cows were bred, normal calves were born. When seronegative heifers were bred, they became seropositive to BVD virus within two weeks, with higher titers in six weeks. On heifer conceived after one service but aborted a 6-month fetus. Three others continued to have estrous cycles until their titers rose to 1:128, then they conceived and gave birth to normal calves. Another heifer conceived on the first service, had a titer of 1:128 two weeks after breeding, and gave birth to a normal calf.  相似文献

Twenty young adult specific pathogen-free cats were randomly divided into two groups of 10 animals each. One group was vaccinated with two doses of feline leukemia virus vaccine according to the manufacturer's recommendations. All 20 cats were challenge exposed oronasally (4 times over a 1-week period), beginning 3 weeks after immunization, with a virulent subgroup A strain of FeLV (CT600-FeLV). The severity of the FeLV infection was enhanced by treating the cats with methylprednisolone acetate at the time of the last FeLV exposure. Ten of 10nonvaccinated cats became persistently viremic compared with 0/10 of the vaccinates. ELISA antibodies to whole FeLV were present at high concentrations after immunization in all of the vaccinated cats, and there was no observable anamnestic antibody response after challenge exposure. ELISA antibodies to whole FeLV appeared at low concentrations in the serum of nonvaccinated cats after infection but disappeared as the viremia became permanently established. Virus neutralizing antibodies were detected in 3/10 vaccinates and 0/10 nonvaccinates immediately before FeLV challenge exposure, and in 8/10 vaccinates and 1/10 nonvaccinates 5 weeks later. Although vaccination did not consistently evoke virus neutralizing antibodies, it appeared to immunologically prime cats for a virus-neutralizing antibody response after infection. Active FeLV infection was detected in bone marrow cells taken 14 weeks after infection from 10/10 nonvaccinates and 0/10 vaccinates. Latent FeLV infection was not detected in bone marrow cells from any of the vaccinated cats 14 weeks after challenge exposure.  相似文献

Four-month-old beef calves were implanted with 36 mg zeranol, and their growth compared with untreated calves. Treated steer and heifer calves gained 10 kg more bodyweight to weaning at 7.5 months of age. The trial was conducted at 2 research centres and calves at both centres showed significant responses for the first 45 days (P less than 0.001) after treatment but during the following 30 days only calves at one centre showed a continued response (P less than 0.05). No differences in growth rate occurred between treated and untreated calves over the final 30 days before weaning at either centre. The backfat measurement of untreated animals increased more than that of the implanted animals (P less than 0.05) at one centre but not at the other.  相似文献

Effectiveness of 2 concentrations of a monovalent vaccine containing Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo type hardjo-bovis was evaluated for protection of heifers from infection with type hardjo-bovis. Nine heifers were given 2 doses of low-dose vaccine (8.32 x 10(8) cells/dose); 9 heifers were given 2 doses of high-dose vaccine (8.32 x 10(9) cells/dose); and 1 steer and 1 heifer were maintained as nonvaccinated controls. Groups of vaccinated cattle were challenge-exposed with serovar hardjo type hardjo-bovis at 7 (n = 6), 11 (n = 6), or 15 (n = 6) weeks after completion of vaccination. All cattle were challenge-exposed by conjunctival instillation of 1 x 10(5) hardjo-bovis cells on 3 consecutive days. Both control and all vaccinated cattle became infected and shed serovar hardjo type hardjo-bovis in their urine. Leptospires were detected in 15 of 16 (94%) urine samples from control cattle and in 124 of 143 (87%) samples from vaccinated cattle. Leptospires were detected in kidneys of 17 of 18 vaccinated cattle and 2 of 2 control cattle and in the uterus or oviducts of 13 of 18 vaccinates and the 1 control heifer.  相似文献

Objective-To determine whether administration of 2 doses of a multivalent, modified-live virus vaccine prior to breeding of heifers would provide protection against abortion and fetal infection following exposure of pregnant heifers to cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and cattle with acute bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) infection. Design-Randomized controlled clinical trial. Animals-33 crossbred beef heifers, 3 steers, 6 bulls, and 25 calves. Procedures-20 of 22 vaccinated and 10 of 11 unvaccinated heifers became pregnant and were commingled with 3 steers PI with BVDV type 1a, 1b, or 2 for 56 days beginning 102 days after the second vaccination (administered 30 days after the first vaccination). Eighty days following removal of BVDV-PI steers, heifers were commingled with 3 bulls with acute BHV1 infection for 14 days. Results-After BVDV exposure, 1 fetus (not evaluated) was aborted by a vaccinated heifer; BVDV was detected in 0 of 19 calves from vaccinated heifers and in all 4 fetuses (aborted after BHV1 exposure) and 6 calves from unvaccinated heifers. Bovine herpesvirus 1 was not detected in any fetus or calf and associated fetal membranes in either treatment group. Vaccinated heifers had longer gestation periods and calves with greater birth weights, weaning weights, average daily gains, and market value at weaning, compared with those for calves born to unvaccinated heifers. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Prebreeding administration of a modified-live virus vaccine to heifers resulted in fewer abortions and BVDV-PI offspring and improved growth and increased market value of weaned calves.  相似文献

An 18-month-old bovine heifer was presented for clinical evaluation after a sudden onset of ventral edema. Clinical and pathological evaluations were consistent with thymic lymphosarcoma, a sporadic form of lymphosarcoma in cattle, which is not generally considered to be associated with bovine leukemia virus (BLV). This heifer was seropositive for BLV at 6 and 18 months of age. Tissues obtained at necropsy were evaluated using in situ polymerase chain reaction. The BLV proviral DNA was detected in lymphocytes of the thymus as well as in epithelial cells of the liver and kidney. This report presents evidence that thymic lymphosarcomas can be associated with BLV infection and that BLV may have a broader cellular tropism than was supposed previously.  相似文献

The events which followed the introduction of a heifer into a dairy herd were consistent with the animal being persistently infected with bovine diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus. Obvious damage was limited to the progeny of cows which were in the first 168 days of gestation at that time. Only fetuses up to 81 days of gestation at the putative time of introduction of infection became persistently infected in calfhood and, although they exhibited body tremor, two such calves necropsied at three months of age lacked macroscopic or microscopic lesions in the central nervous system. In contrast calves which had been more advanced in gestation, at 146 and 153 days at the time of infection, had eliminated the infection and had lesions of cerebellar dysplasia and multifocal retinal atrophy.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe the effects of slaughter age (at constant weights) on pre- and post-weaning growth rate and carcass traits of unselected steer and heifer progeny from a crossbred beef herd. The data were obtained from 340 heifers and 377 steers weaned at 305 days of age and fed a high-energy post-weaning diet. Heifers and steers were slaughtered at individual unshrunk weights of 420 and 470 kg, respectively, and divided into slaughter age classes based on 25-day intervals. There were differences (P < 0.01) between slaughter age classes for all growth traits including 305-day (weaning) weight, post-weaning daily gain, days on feed, and weight/day. Mean 305-day weight of steers in the youngest slaughter age class (347.8 kg; 376–400 days of age) was 28% greater than the mean of steers in the oldest age class (272.2 kg;>501 days of age). The youngest steer class averaged 63% more for daily gain than the oldest steer class (1.462 vs. 0.894 kg); the corresponding value for heifers was 64%. Post-weaning time in the feedlot ranged from 84.7 days for the youngest steer to 215.6 for the oldest steer class. Calculations based on mean differences between age classes in 305-day weight, daily gain and days on feed indicated that variability in weaning weight and in daily gain were of similar importance in determining slaughter age. Marbling score was greater (P < 0.01) for older steer classes, but was not different in the heifer data. Fat thickness of the oldest steer class was 25% more than the youngest steer class (1.89 vs. 1.51 cm); the corresponding percent in heifers was 30%. With the exception of differences in untrimmed rib and chuck percents in steers (P < 0.05), and rib specific gravity in heifers (P < 0.05), carcass quantity traits were essentially unaffected by slaughter age class when marbling score and fat thickness were included as continuous independent variables. None of the organoleptic traits (tenderness, juiciness and flavour) were affected by slaughter age class.  相似文献

A group of 17 Friesian-Holstein steers held in individual pens was examined for evidence of infection with bovine spumavirus (BSV). Serum was examined for specific antibody by 2 serological procedures, and circulatory leucocytes and throat swabs were examined for the presence of circulatory leucocyte-associated BSV (CLAB) and saliva-associated BSV (SAB). Initial tests showed that 7 of the 17 steers had specific antibody to BSV by both serological procedures, and a further steer developed such antibody during the first 3 months of holding the animals in single contiguous pens. All 8 of these specific antibody-positive steers were CLAB positive and SAB negative. Nine steers showed no specific antibody to BSV by either of the 2 serological procedures; 8 of these 9 steers showed no evidence of CLAB or SAB. The exception was one steer which was CLAB- and SAB-positive at each of 30 samplings taken over a period of 9 months observation, whilst remaining specific-antibody free. This steer was classed as immunologically tolerant of BSV, and epidemiological data suggested that lateral spread of infection had originated from this animal through the agency of saliva.  相似文献

Exposure of colostrum-deprived calves and calves with colostrally acquired maternal antibody to aerosols of parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus resulted in signs of infection, leukopenia, and shedding of virus from the nasal passages. However, infection was not as severe in calves with colostrally acquired maternal antibody as it was in colostrum-deprived calves which did not have antibody to PI-3 virus before they were exposed. All calves responded immunologically to PI-3 virus, as indicated by resistance to challenge exposure and subsequent development of virus-neutralizing antibody. However, levels of serum and nasal secretion (NS) antibody at 30 days after viral exposure were lower in calves with colostrally acquired maternal antibody than in colostrum-deprived calves, and a serum antibody response in the former was primarily indicated by an anamnestic response after challenge exposure. After calves were challenge exposed to PI-3 virus, serum and NS antibodies were increased in all calves, but antibody titers were generally lower for calves that had colostrally acquired maternal antibody before their exposure than for those that acquired antibody only after PI-3 viral infection.  相似文献

Total insulin specific binding (IB) and the number and affinity of insulin receptors on mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) were used to predict carcass composition of heifers and steers. Dependent variables were kidney fat, body cavity fat, s.c. fat, intermuscular fat, lean and bone. Independent variables were parameters that could be measured on the live animal, including insulin receptor characteristics, age, shrunk weight, breed and carcass s.c. rib fat thickness (SUB). All carcass fat characteristics and IB were greater for heifers than for steers, but the ability to predict either heifer or steer carcass fat characteristics was not improved by inclusion of IB in prediction equations. However, the number of low-affinity insulin receptors on MNL contributed significantly to the prediction of all heifer carcass characteristics except bone. Carcass s.c. rib fat thickness also entered the prediction equations for all heifer carcass characteristics except kidney fat. In the prediction of heifer kidney fat, the only significant independent variable was the number of low-affinity insulin receptors on MNL (R2 = .38). Carcass characteristics of steers were better predicted by SUB than were heifer carcass characteristics, and insulin receptor characteristics, when added to steer equations that contained SUB, improved R2 by .10 or less. Our results suggest that insulin receptor characteristics will be most useful in the prediction of carcass characteristics of heifers where there is a poor relationship between quantity of s.c. fat and other carcass fat depots.  相似文献

Two Holstein heifers and a cow were diagnosed with White Heifer Disease by ultrasonography. Case 1 was a 14 month-old heifer with aplasia of both sides of the uterine horn. In case 2, a primiparous cow and case 3, an 18 month-old heifer, both showed aplasia of the right uterine horn. Case 2 became pregnant by artificial insemination at ipsilateral ovulatory follicle and corpus luteum in the left ovary, while case 3 became pregnant by embryo transfer at 7 days after oestrus with contralateral corpus luteum in the right ovary.  相似文献

Brucellosis vaccination and dehorning were examined for an association with bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in heifers on a California dairy between April 1984 and June 1987. Between December 1985 and June 1986, weaned heifers were dehorned using the gouge method at the time of brucellosis vaccination. Using logistic regression, the estimated probability for a nondehorned heifer to seroconvert within three months after brucellosis vaccination (0.08) was significantly less than that for heifers dehorned after a noninfected heifer (0.46) or than that for heifers dehorned after an infected heifer (0.85) (p = 0.039 and p less than 0.001, respectively). To evaluate risk of transmission by brucellosis vaccination, which was usually done within one month postweaning, cumulative proportions of heifers remaining uninfected were computed among heifers that did not seroconvert three months after dehorning. Because results of a Cox model analysis indicated that groups of heifers were 6.6 times more at risk of becoming infected if placed in pens holding gouge-dehorned heifers (where prevalence varied between 50 and 70%) (p less than 0.001) than other groups placed in pens without gouge-dehorned heifers (where prevalence varied between 10 and 30%), cumulative proportions of heifers remaining uninfected were computed for each type of group. The cumulative proportion of heifers remaining uninfected from weaning to first calving was 0.60 for the high prevalence group and 0.96 for the low prevalence group. No change in slope of cumulative proportions was observed before and after one month postweaning, suggesting that brucellosis vaccination was not an effective means of transmission.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six heifers were inoculated IV at estrus with the Iowa or Colorado isolates of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV). Subsequent measurements of plasma progesterone indicated that corpus luteum function was depressed in all heifers. In the 1st estrous cycle after inoculation, progesterone values did not exceed 2 ng/ml in 3 heifers given the Iowa isolate. Although maximal progesterone values were greater than or equal to 2 ng/ml in 3 heifers given the Colorado isolate, values were lower than those in later cycles. Five heifers had maximal diestrual progesterone values greater than or equal to 5 ng/ml within 5 weeks after inoculation, but in the 6th heifer, this amount of progesterone was not present until 8 weeks after inoculation. Three to 5 months after inoculation, all heifers were given 5 daily injections of dexamethasone, 2 heifers each during metestrus, diestrus, or proestrus. Subsequent recrudescence of IBRV was demonstrated in all heifers by the isolation of virus from vaginal or nasal swab samples. The heifers were killed 10 to 17 days after initiation of dexamethasone treatment and their reproductive organs were examined for lesions and IBRV. Lesions were not seen, and IBRV was isolated only from the corpus luteum of a heifer given dexamethasone during diestrus.  相似文献

In a herd of 120 two to eight months old calves kept at a Mexican Government experimental station in Ajuchitlan, Querétaro, weight loss and ptialism were observed. Upon a clinical examination, it was found that 31 (25.8%) of the animals disclosed papules in the oral and perioral regions. Biopsies from the affected tissues were studied with the light and electron microscopes. Serological studies and isolation of the virus were also carried out. A Pox virus was identified (240 x 100 x 150 +/- 7% nm) with the electron microscope. Dermatophilus sp. was occasionally observed. Bovine kidney monolayers, inoculated with affected bovine tissues demonstrated cytopathic effect up to the 4th serial passage. Inoculation with cell cultured infectious material in the oral submucosa (cell lysate) produced typical lesions of BPS on a heifer. Infectious tissues from this experimentally inoculated animal produced cytopathic effect in tissue cultured cells after 24 hours, and this last material was infectious for a second young heifer. Virus-neutralization tests, using an hyperimmune serum, disclosed a neutralization index of 1.5 logarithms. It was concluded that bovine papular stomatitis virus was the etiological agent.  相似文献

The therapeutic efficacy of a Campylobacter fetus subsp venerealis bacterin was determined in experimentally infected bulls. Ten of twelve 5-year-old Angus bulls became infected after being infused intrapreputially with C fetus subsp venerealis. Of the 10 bulls, 6 were vaccinated with 5 ml of C fetus subsp venerealis vaccine on 2 occasions 4 weeks apart. Preputial washings of the vaccinated bulls were culturally negative by the 8th week after primary vaccination. None of the 18 heifers exposed to the vaccinated bulls became infected. The 4 infected, nonvaccinated bulls remained culturally positive to C fetus (P less than 0.002), and each bull infected at least 1 heifer (P less than 0.001). Two noninfected, nonvaccinated bulls remained culturally negative and did not infect any heifer. The 4 infected, nonvaccinated bulls were then vaccinated. Two bulls remained infected 9 weeks after primary vaccination, as determined by the virgin heifer test and cultural examination of preputial washings. Serologic data from 7 sampling periods were different (P less than 0.001) for vaccinated vs nonvaccinated bulls at 4 (against K antigen) or 6 (against O antigen) weeks after primary vaccination. Vaccination was effective in eliminating the infection in most of the infected bulls, but cannot be recommended as the sole measure of control in infected herds.  相似文献

Transmission of bovine brucellosis from dam to offspring under natural circumstances was demonstrated in a 2 1/2-year study of an infected cow and her calf. The cow delivered a full-term heifer calf after her first gestation. The calf remained with its dam until 7 months of age, then was placed in isolation until bred. During her first gestation, the second-generation heifer became seropositive for Brucella abortus. She later gave birth to a calf with B abortus infection, as determined by isolation of B abortus biotype 1 from stomach contents, heart blood, lung, and spleen of the calf. The same organism was isolated from the placenta and milk of the dam.  相似文献
