Growth and mortality of adult Strombus gigas L. was studied in a population offshore of La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Adult queen conchs do not grow in shell length, but only in shell thickness. Growth in thickness of the flared shell-lip was measured during a 2-year mark-recapture study and modelled using the von Bertalanffy growth function. Model parameters were K=0.3706 year−1 and L (asymptotic lip-thickness) =54.9 mm; the third von Bertalanffy parameter, t0, cannot be obtained from mark-recapture data alone. Growth in tissue, meat and shell weights of adults were determined using the von Bertalanffy growth function in conjunction with regression equations for weights versus shell length and/or lip thickness. Total instantaneous mortality in adults, determined using von Bertalanffy parameters and lip-thickness frequency analysis, was 1.66 year−1. Subtracting a previous estimate of fishing mortality (F=1.14 year−1) yielded a natural mortality (M) of 0.52 year−1. Given an average age at maturation, defined by the formation of the flared shell-lip, of 3.2 years, the age of first reproduction was estimated at 3.6 years, but could be as much as 4 years.  相似文献

Abstract Population‐genetic structure and average long‐term effective size of yellowtail snapper, Ocyurus chrysurus (Bloch), sampled offshore from the Florida Keys and four localities in the US Caribbean, were investigated using nuclear‐encoded microsatellites and a fragment of the mitochondrially encoded ND‐4 gene. Analysis of spatial genetic variation revealed occurrence of up to four groupings (stocks) of yellowtail snapper: one in the Florida Keys, one along the west coast of Puerto Rico, one that includes the east coast of Puerto Rico and St. Thomas and one offshore of St. Croix. The observed genetic differences among localities are not strong, and additional sampling to examine whether the observed patterns of population structure are temporally stable is warranted. Levels of genetic variability and estimates of average, long‐term effective size (Ne) indicate that yellowtail snapper at all five localities have, at present, sufficient genetic variation to maintain long‐term integrity and sustainability.  相似文献

Small abalone Haliotis diversicolor (Reeve, 1846) is one of the smallest commercial abalone in the world. The successful application of artificial propagation and mass seed production techniques since the 1980s have resulted in the establishment of well-developed culture systems for small abalone in Taiwan. In the study reported here, we estimated the growth of a population of small abalone after a decade in a closed culture system and its growth characteristics with those of wild populations reported in previous studies. The von Bertalanffy growth equations of the shell length (L) and body weight (W) of cultured abalone were L t  = 71.73 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16)) and W t  = 47.70 (1 ? e?0.84 (t?0.16))3.180, respectively. The instantaneous rate of change for weight had an inflection point at the age of 1.54 years, indicating that cultured abalones reach their apex of body growth around this age. Compared with the wild populations, the cultured population exhibits a significantly smaller maximal shell length (L ) and a significantly larger growth coefficient (k). Based on our results, it appears that the artificial culture of generations of small albalone for one decade or more in a closed system could be one of the major factors causing the observed minimization of size in the cultured abalone; this may be an adaptation in which growth is traded off for the larger k.  相似文献

A total of 518 Gerres sp. were collected around Okinawa Island, Japan, from November 2002 to July 2005, with monthly sampling where the standard length of females (n=218) were 56.2–147.1 mm, and males (n=149) were 62.2–139.4 mm. The maximum ages observed for females were 5+ years and males were 4+ years, estimated by transverse sectioned sagittal otoliths. Mean marginal increment indicated that opaque rings were formed once a year during April to July. The standard length (SL; mm) — body wet weight (BW; g) relationships were described as BW=(3.26×10−5) SL2.97 and BW=(3.13×10−5) SL 2.98 for females and males, respectively, and the standard length at age described by von Bertalanffy growth function for females, L t=137.1(1−e−0.80[t+0.80]) and males, L t=127.3(1−e−0.82[t+0.93]).  相似文献

The pelagic thresher shark, Alopias pelagicus, is a cosmopolitan species and abundant in Taiwan waters. Some of its biological information has been documented yet its population dynamics are poorly known. The purpose of this study is to assess the pelagic thresher shark stock status in the eastern Taiwan waters. The whole weights (W) of 51,748 individuals of the pelagic thresher shark landed at Nanfanao and Chengkung fish markets, eastern Taiwan from 1990 to 2004 were converted to precaudal length (PCL) based on the W–PCL relationship (W = 2.25 × 10−4 × PCL2.533, n = 2165). The sexes combined VBGE Lt = 189.5 × (1  e−0.10(t+6.47)) was used to estimate the age for each length group. Total mortality rates (Z) obtained with length-converted catch curves ranged from 0.208 to 0.277 year−1. Natural mortality rate (M) estimated from Hoenig method was 0.132 year−1, and exploitation rate (E) ranged from 0.069 to 0.127 for 1990–2004. Annual abundance was estimated to range from 97,551 in 2000 to 153,331 in 2003 from virtual population analysis, and the highest fishing mortality occurred in ages 8–18 years. There were four different scenarios being simulated in this study. Scenario 1 indicated that spawning per recruit (SPR) ranged from 23.07% in 2001 to 47.71% in 1990 with a mean of 36.41% for the period of 1990–2004. The mean SPR of pelagic thresher for 1990–2004 was below the BRP of SPR = 35% in scenarios 2–4 suggesting that this stock was slightly overexploited. Therefore, to ensure sustainable utilization of this stock, reduction of fishing effort and close monitoring on A. pelagicus are needed.  相似文献

Three components of the energy budget, consumption (C), respiration (R) and growth (G). were measured in larval and early juvenile sole (77 μg to 7.2 mg dry weight) kept under controlled temperature (15oC), light (photoperiod 18 h at 800 lux) and food (Artemici salina. 5 ind ml-1) conditions. The increase in body weight with age is described by the growth function Wt= 51.9 e0143t, where t is time in days from hatching. Wt is weight (ug dry wt) at time t, 51.9 is the estimate of larval weight at hatching (Wo) and 0.143 is the instantaneous growth coefficient. Daily food consumption (C, in ug dry wtday”1 ind-1) increased with body weight (W, in ug dry wt) according to the allometric function, C = 1.852W0.852. Low routine oxygen consumption (R, in nl 02 h-1 ind-1) was best described in relation to body weight by the allometric equation R = 1.47W0.975 By using the above growth and allometric functions and by converting G, C and R into their energetic equivalents (joules day-1 ind-1), the changes in assimilation efficiency (K1) and gross growth efficiency (K1) during ontogeny could be modelled.  相似文献

The scale‐up of spotted rose snapper, Lutjanus guttatus, larval rearing is described. Fertilized eggs (480,000) were obtained from a 1‐d harvest of a natural spawning captive broodstock acclimatized for 1 yr and 6 mo in two fiberglass tanks (18 m3). Fourteen hours after spawning, 89.6% of the collected eggs were floating, of which 96.2% were transparent with live embryos. Incubation at 25–26 C lasted 21 h, with 90.2 ± 2.1% hatching percentage of normal larvae. The percentage of viable larvae at 48 h after hatching was 79.7 ± 1.9%. Initial stocking density was 10.4 ± 1.0 larvae/L 2 days after hatching (d.p.h.). A total of 22,600 juveniles (1256 ± 170 juveniles/m3) were harvested from six 3‐m3 cylindrical fiberglass tanks. Average survival was 12.1 ± 1.1%. Final mean length and weight were 5.5 ± 0.05 cm and 2.24 ± 0.04 g, respectively. Growth expressed in total length was TL = 2.1476e0.0543t (R2 = 0.9911). Final mean biomass and condition factor were 2.8 kg/m3, 12.3% and 1.346. General length‐weight ratio was W = 0.05460 LT2.2306.  相似文献

We studied the effect of rearing densities of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei in three densities with three replicate treatments [T1: 0.4 million post-larvae (PL) ha−1, T2: 0.5 million PL ha−1, T3: 0.6 million PL ha−1] and water cutback approach on rearing environment, water use efficiency, water footprint and production performance. Conditional water exchange was carried out based on water quality parameters. Water quality suitability index was very good (7.5–9.0) up to 13th, 10th and 5th week of culture in T1, T2 and T3, respectively; which was attributed to rearing density, smaller-sized shrimp and low early feed input. Optimum rearing density of 50 PL m-2 (T2) led to total water use of 3.25 × 104 m3. It was seeming as a way to improve shrimp productivity (10.58 t ha−1 120 d−1), consumptive water use index (1.72 m3 kg-1 biomass), total water footprint (1229 m3 t−1 biomass) and net consumptive water productivity (USD 1.28 m-3). L. vannamei culture with low to moderate water exchange as in T2, helped uphold water quality suitable for the shrimp growth, improved water use efficiency (0.58 kg biomass m-3 water), minimized sediment load (45.3 m3 t-1 biomass), effluent outputs (0.63 × 104 m3), pumping cost (USD 30.1 t−1 biomass produced), and ratio of output value to the cost of cultivation (1.97). The findings and advancement in knowledge would offer the basis to augment shrimp rearing efforts and the water management approaches will help in preventing the production of waste and effluent while increasing water use efficiency and production performance.  相似文献

The knowledge of geochemical processes in fishponds is important in defining farming strategies and the carrying capacity of these systems, and is therefore essential for the management and sustainability of semi‐intensive aquaculture in earth ponds. The main purpose of the present work, developed in the Aquaculture Research Station located in Ria Formosa, was to study the geochemical changes in semi‐intensive earth ponds of white seabream Diplodus sargus L. during a production cycle, and relate it to farming conditions (fish biomass and feeding rate). Settled material and sediment samples were collected in a fish production pond and in a non‐fish production pond during 2 years. The results obtained showed that particle‐settling rates (S, g m−2 day−1) increased linearly with time (t, days): S=0.7t–34, in the fishpond. Increasing deposition of particulate material increased the organic matter content of bottom sediments, particularly during the second production year. Organic matter mineralization, during periods of high temperatures, led to high nutrient concentrations in porewater (NH4+, 965 μM; NO3, 40 μM; HPO42−, 39 μM) and subsequently to an increase in benthic primary production in the fishpond. The geochemical similarities between fishpond sediments and shallow coastal system's sediments, along with the high fish survival rate (94%), suggest that for the assayed farming conditions there were no environmental constraints within the pond. However, some impact on bottom sediments, namely, an increase in settled material, organic matter deposition, nutrients in porewater and microphytobentos production, was evident above a fish biomass of 500 g m−3 and a feeding rate of 150 kg month−1, indicating that pond environmental conditions should be carefully monitored from this point on.  相似文献

This study used a curvilinear model to investigate the effects of different digestible energy (DE) levels on the digestible protein (DP) requirements of juvenile snapper Pagrus auratus. For each DE level (15, 18 or 21 MJ kg−1), DP content was increased from about 210–560 g kg−1 in seven evenly spaced increments by formulating a summit diet (highest DP content) and a diluent diet (lowest DP content) at the desired DE level and combining the summit and diluent diets in various ratios to achieve the desired DP content. This ensured the DE level remained relatively stable. Each of the 21 dietary treatments was fed to three replicate groups of snapper twice daily to apparent satiation for 57 days. At the completion of the trial, fish were weighed and killed for chemical analysis. Results indicated that the rapid growth of snapper weighing 30–90 g was highly dependent on the ratio of DP to DE and that optimum protein deposition did not occur until snapper were offered feeds with at least 350 g DPkg−1, irrespective of DE level. According to the fitted models, diets formulated for snapper reared at temperatures from 20–25°C should contain approximately 23 g DP MJ DE−1 to promote optimal weight gain and protein deposition. Based on the feeding regime used in this study, this could be achieved with practical diets containing a DP:DE ratio of 460:20, 420:18 or 350:15.  相似文献

The life history of an increasingly important pelagic commercial and sport fish, the Talang queenfish, Scomberoides commersonnianus, was studied in northern Australia to investigate the stock status and assess current management of the species using minimum legal lengths (MLL). Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 1404 mm FL, K = 0.10 year−1 and t0 = −1.21 year−1. There was no significant difference in growth between sexes. Ages ranged from 1 to 11 years with age composition differing between the commercial (mainly 6–7 years) and sport fishery (mainly 2–4 years). Females matured (L50) at 635 mm FL and 4–5 years. Spawning occurred between August and March when mature females were estimated to produce 259,488–2,859,935 eggs per spawning. Natural mortality (M) was estimated as 0.16–0.26 year−1, while the combined fishing mortality (Fcurrent) from commercial and sport fisheries was 0.38–0.48 year−1. Yield-per-recruit analyses revealed that under current MLL limits (no MLL or 45 cm TL) and natural mortality (M = 0.16, 0.2 and 0.26 year−1), Fcurrent exceeded the reference points Fmax (0.15–0.22 year−1) and F0.1 (0.10–0.15 year−1), suggesting the stock may be growth overfished if the current situation remains unchanged. Although a stock–recruitment relationship is unknown, spawning stock biomass-per-recruit analysis indicates the stock may also be recruitment overfished since Fcurrent exceeded the reference points F25% (0.19–0.24 year−1) and F40% (0.11–0.15 year−1). Increasing the MLL corresponding to L50 of females (70 cm TL) will greatly improve the yield and long-term sustainability of the stock, and also enhance the sport fishery by increasing the number of larger trophy fish.  相似文献

We studied the age and growth of the lizardfish Saurida elongata using ground thin sections of otoliths (sagittae) from specimens collected in the Tsushima/Korea Strait between May 1999 and June 2001. A total of 695 individuals with fork lengths (FL) ranging from 189 to 478 mm were examined. The frequency of translucent zone occurrence at the outer margin of the otoliths indicated that translucent zones formed once a year between November and February. Most of the males examined were estimated to be 2–7 years old and the females, 3–9 years old. The maximum estimated age of a male specimen was 10 years and that of a female, 11 years. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth curves were FL t  = 451{1 − exp[−0.172(t + 2.50)]} and FL t  = 515{1 − exp[−0.151(t + 2.47)]} for males and females, respectively. At all ages, the FL at a specific age for females was greater than that for males, suggesting that females of this species grow faster than males.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to investigate the digestibility and utilization of carbohydrate sources by Australian snapper Pagrus auratus. In the first experiment, snapper of two different size classes (110 and 375 g) were fed a reference diet containing no starch (REF) or diets containing 150 (PN15), 250 (PN25), 350 (PN35) or 450 g kg?1 (PN45) of 100% gelatinized wheat starch to investigate the interactive effects of fish size and starch inclusion level on apparent organic matter (OM) or gross energy (GE) digestibility (ADC), post‐prandial plasma glucose concentration, hepatosomatic index (HSI) and liver or tissue glycogen content. A second experiment used a 72 h time course study to investigate the ability of larger snapper (300–481 g) to clear an intra‐peritoneal injection of 1 g d ‐glucose kg?1 body weight (BW). Organic matter and GE ADCs declined significantly in both fish sizes as the level of starch increased (PN45energy small fishenergy large fish). There was no interaction between fish size and inclusion level with respect to GE or OM ADCs. Gross energy ADC for both sized fish was described by the linear function GE ADC=104.97 (±3.39)–0.109 (±0.010) × inclusion level (R2=0.86). Hepatosomatic index, liver and muscle glycogen concentrations were significantly elevated in both small and large snapper‐fed diets containing gelatinized starch compared with snapper fed the REF diet. Three‐hour post‐prandial plasma glucose concentrations were not significantly affected by fish size, inclusion level or the interaction of these factors (REF=PN15=PN25=PN35=PN45), and ranged between 1.60 and 2.5 mM. The mean±SD resting level of plasma glucose (0 h) was 2.4±1.1 mM. Circulating levels of plasma glucose in snapper peaked at 18.9 mM approximately 3 h after intra‐peritoneal injection and fish exhibited hyperglycaemia for at least 12–18 h. There were no significant differences between the plasma glucose concentrations of snapper sampled 0, 18, 24, 48 or 72 h after injection (0=18=24=48=72<12< 1<3=6 h), indicating snapper required almost 18 h to regulate their circulating levels of glucose to near‐basal concentrations. Australian snapper are capable of digesting moderate levels of gelatinized wheat starch; however, increasing the dietary content of starch resulted in a reduction in OM and GE digestibility. Smaller snapper appear to be less capable of digesting gelatinized starch than larger fish, and levels above 250 and 350 g kg?1 of diet are not recommended for small and large fish respectively. Snapper subjected to an intra‐peritoneal injection of d ‐glucose have prolonged hyperglycaemia; however, the post‐prandial response to the uptake of glucose from normally digested gelatinized starch appears to be more regulated.  相似文献

The venturi aeration is an effective practice to increase the dissolved oxygen accessibility in the water bodies. This study aims to optimize the various geometrical parameters of the venturi aeration system. A non-dimensional technique was applied to find the optimum performance of various geometric parameters i.e. throat lengths (tl), number of air holes (N), and converging and diverging angles (α and β). These experiments have been carried out using 1124 L capacity of tank having dimensions of 105 cm long, 105 cm wide and 102 cm deep. The experiments were conducted at a constant flow velocity of water (1.096 m/s) with varying throat length (tl = 20–100 mm keeping 20 mm as interval between two consecutive length), number of air holes (N = 1–17 at an equal hole to hole distance of 5 mm between them), and converging and diverging angles (α and β = 10°, 15°, 20° and 25°). Multiple non-linear regression equations were also developed from the linear relation with the dependent variable (Non-dimensional form of standard aeration efficiency, NDSAE) and independent variables (tl and N). With the geometrically optimized venturi aerator the optimum performance was found for tl =100 mm, N = 17, and α and β = 15°. The maximum value of standard oxygen transfer rate (SOTR) and standard aeration efficiency (SAE) obtained was 0.0216 kgO2/h and 0.611 kgO2/kWh respectively. From the non-dimensional study, it was found that the NDSAE is the function Reynolds number (Re) and Froude number (Fr). The simulation equations were developed on the basis of Re and Fr for NDSAE, and subjected to 7.378 × 10−6 < Re < 3.689 × 10-5 and 0.163 < Fr < 0.817, respectively.  相似文献

Fish oxygen requirement is a fundamental variable of aquaculture system design and management, as it is the basis for determining water flow rates for sustaining stock. A study on oxygen consumption of California halibut (Paralichthys californicus) between 3.2 and 165.6 g was conducted in small raceways (2.41 m long, 0.28 m wide, and 0.22 m high; operational water depth between 0.05 and 0.10 m with a quiescent zone 19 cm long in the effluent section) working as open respirometers in a recirculating system under farm-like conditions. The fish were fed commercial dry pelleted feeds at a ratio of ∼0.70–3.00% of body weight (BW) and stocked at densities between 94% and 316% percent coverage area (PCA). Oxygen consumption rates were determined by mass balance calculations. The mean and maximum oxygen consumption rates (g O2/kg fish/day) for juvenile California halibut under the conditions tested can be expressed by Mday = 15.077W−0.2452 and Mday = 17.266W−0.2033, respectively, where W is fish weight in grams. The determination of oxygen consumption by California halibut in farm-like conditions provides valuable information on the oxygen requirement of these fish in an aquacultural setting. This information can be used for designing and sizing a rearing facility for the intensive culture of California halibut.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of florfenicol (FF) in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) was studied after single intravenous (10 mg kg−1) and oral (100 mg kg−1) administration. The plasma concentration–time data of florfenicol were described by an open one‐compartment model. The elimination half‐life (t1/2) was estimated to be 21.0 h, and the total body clearance, Cl, was determined as 0.028 L kg h−1. The apparent volume distribution (Vd) was calculated to be 0.86 L kg−1 and the mean residence time (MRTiv) was 30.2 h. Following oral administration, the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) of 55.4 μg mL−1 was reached at 12 h (Tmax). The absorption constant (ka) was 0.158 h−1. The bioavailability was estimated to be 57.1%. The low bioavailability observed at higher doses was explained by the saturation of the mechanisms of absorption. The drug absorption process was limited by its inherent low solubility, which limited the amount of available FF absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Based on the pharmacokinetic data, an optimal dosing schedule for FF administration is hereby provided. Based on the minimum inhibitory concentration found for susceptible strains of Aeromonas salmonicida, oral FF administration of first, an initial dose of 30 mg FF kg−1, followed by 6 maintenance doses at 18 mg kg−1/daily could be effective against furunculosis in turbot.  相似文献

Pink salmon fry, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, were held in a small floating net pen for nearly 7 weeks. The pen was moored in a narrow channel where tidal current velocities reach values near 0.4 m/s. The fry were maintained solely by marine zooplankton carried into the enclosure by surface currents.Samples of approximately 100 fry were removed weekly from the pen to monitor growth and diet. For the 1049 fry which began the experiment, fork length (FL) averaged 32.7 mm and wet weight (W) 0.23 g. Forty-eight days later 330 fry remained in the pen; FL had increased to 44.1 mm and W to 0.76 g. Natural mortality in the pen was less than 2% during this period.  相似文献

No data have previously been reported on Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis L. in Lake Varese. In this study, the growth, diet, and reproductive biology of the Eurasian perch population were investigated with the aim of providing information that may serve as a basis for efficient resource management. A total of 240 specimens were caught during the monthly sampling campaign from November 2006 through October 2008. The length-to-weight relationships were W t = 8.4 × 10−3 L t3.10 (males) and W t = 4.1 × 10−3 L t3.36 (females). The parameters for the von Bertalanffy growth function for pooled sexes were L  = 33.17 cm, k = 0.20 year−1, and t 0 = −1.34 year. Perch in Lake Varese spawn from April through May. Sexual maturity is reached when males are 2 years old, in females mostly when they are 3 years old. Relative fecundity (F rel) and absolute fecundity (F abs) were assessed for females. Fecundity values were similar to data reported for other European populations: females of age 2+ F rel = 102,457 ± 12,275, age 3+ F rel = 131,767 ± 5,891, and age 4+ F rel = 131,252 ± 15,555. Perch diet spectrum was wide and somewhat characterized by season. Perch in Lake Varese feed on macroinvertebrates, mainly Chironomidae and Chaoborus, zooplankton, and juvenile rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus.  相似文献

Age and growth during immature stages of the mangrove red snapper Lutjanus argentimaculatus were examined using 129 sectioned otoliths of fish collected in rivers and coastal areas around Ishigaki Island. Monthly changes in the marginal growth index indicated that ring marks (inner edge of opaque zone) are formed once a year around May. Estimated ages of the sampled fish ranged from 0.2 to 4.5 years. The proportion of mangrove red snappers collected in each sampling set in the rivers was associated with age, namely, the older the fish, the smaller the proportion. This result suggests that the mangrove red snapper gradually moves from the river habitat to coastal areas with increasing age between 1 and 3 years. The relationship between standard length (Y; cm) and age (X; year) was expressed by the linear regression Y = 6.30X + 5.41. Both the somatic and otolith growth of age-one and age-two fish collected in coastal areas were faster than those of fish collected in rivers, suggesting that individuals with fast growth leave the rivers earlier than those with slow growth. Whereas the basic growth pattern obtained in this study is similar to that of the mangrove red snapper in waters around Great Barrier Reef, Australia, there is a clear difference in length of time spent in rivers between the two populations, probably associated with the difference in the scale of the rivers used as nursery grounds.  相似文献

Age, growth, maturity, and sex changes of the monogrammed monocle bream Scolopsis monogramma were estimated from ca. 500 specimens collected at Okinawa-jima Island in southern Japan. Age was determined from sectioned otoliths: maximum ages were 10 years for females and 9 years for males. Parameters for von Bertalanffy growth functions were L t  = 206.6{1 ? exp[?0.68(t + 0.81)]} (n = 337) for females and L t  = 244.4{1 ? exp[?0.93(t + 0.32)]} (n = 130) for males. The spawning season was estimated to last from June to July, with a peak in July. The standard length (SL) and age at 50 % maturity for females were estimated as 186.4 mm SL and 3.3 years, respectively. Intersex individuals appeared from 159.6 to 237.5 mm SL (n = 16) in fish between 1 and six years old, with the highest frequencies occurring at 170 mm SL and 2 years old. Hence, almost all S. monogramma specimens found at Okinawa-jima Island exhibited pre-maturational sex change, although some may have been protogynous hermaphrodites. Biological characteristics such as age at growth, maturation, and spawning season are valuable factors that can inform the resource management of local fisheries.  相似文献
