Polyethylene glycol lavage solutions are used for colonic preparation in dogs and are considered relatively safe. Aspiration is an uncommon but potentially devastating complication of polyethylene glycol administration. Full recovery is possible and often rapid in people treated with bronchoalveolar lavage. A healthy 2-year-old male Beagle used in an endoscopy teaching laboratory aspirated a small amount of polyethylene glycol lavage solution. Although initially appearing unaffected, the dog quickly became hypoxemic. Bronchoscopy was used to lavage the lungs and aspirate tracheal/pulmonary fluid 5 times over the course of 45 minutes. The dog completely recovered. This report presents the successful treatment of polyethylene glycol aspiration in a dog. Although the seriousness of aspiration might not be immediately evident, bronchoscopy and lavage should be pursued because of the rapidly progressive nature of polyethylene glycol-induced pulmonary edema. 相似文献

Abstract Extract Canine hookworm disease is a general term used to describe morbidity associated with infection by certain small-intestinal nematode parasites of dogs. It is now known, however, that there are at leastthree and possibly four species of canine hookworms and that these vary considerably in their pathogenicity (Miller, 1971). In New Zealand, the occurrence of only one of these species, Unoinaria stenocephalia, appears to be recorded in the literature although verbal reports of the existence of a second, Ancylostoma caninum, have been received occasionally. This report describes the occurrence of an A. caninum infection in a dog which resulted in what is believed to be the first recorded case of fatal ancylostomiasis in New Zealand. 相似文献

We report a fatal diphenhydramine poisoning of a 10-year-old, male poodle-cross dog with pre-existing conditions and suspected co-ingestion of ethanol. This case illustrates that diphenhydramine overdose can be fatal in certain circumstances and that analytical toxicology may play an important role in animal death investigations. 相似文献

A one-year-old French Bulldog was referred for the management of a severe form of pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) complicated by right-sided congestive heart failure.Echocardiography showed severe valvular PS with right ventricular concentric hypertrophy, dilatation and severe right atrial enlargement. A pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty (PBV) was performed with a balloon-to-pulmonary annulus ratio of 1.36. Echocardiography immediately after PBV showed a significant reduction in right atrial and ventricular size, improved opening and mobility of the pulmonary valve leaflets, and a 75% reduction in the pulmonary pressure gradient from 158 mmHg pre-operative to 40 mmHg post-operative. The dog recovered well from anesthesia, but 2 h later, it suddenly showed severe respiratory distress. Focus cardiac ultrasound showed increased left cardiac size with echocardiographic signs of high left ventricular filling pressure. Bedside lung ultrasound showed diffuse numerous-to-confluent B lines, compatible with a severe alveolar-interstitial syndrome. The dog was treated with furosemide, helmet continuous positive airway pressure, and then mechanical ventilation but without success. At post-mortem evaluation, histological examination of the lung showed diffuse, severe broncho-alveolar edema with mixed leukocyte, fibrin, and red blood cell infiltrate. Moreover, severe congestion and multifocal alveolar hemorrhages were evident. All findings were compatible with fatal acute lung injury after PBV secondary to pulmonary reperfusion-ischemia injury and increased pulmonary capillary hydrostatic pressure. Based on the present case, acute lung injury should be considered as a rare but serious complication of PBV. 相似文献

Objective– To describe the medical and surgical management of a unique case of barium sulfate aspiration pneumonia in a dog. Case Summary– A 5‐year‐old spayed female black Labrador Retriever weighing 33 kg was presented for evaluation of barium aspiration pneumonia. Approximately 200 mL of barium had been instilled into the caudal lung lobes via an improperly placed orogastric tube. Right caudal, right middle, and accessory lung lobectomies were performed, and the dog was managed intensively for 19 days in the hospital. New or Unique Information Provided– This is the first report of a complete diagnostic work‐up including bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, culture, thoracotomy, and pulmonary histopathology for severe barium sulfate aspiration in a dog with an excellent outcome. 相似文献

Fatal air embolism during anesthesia for laparoscopy in a dog 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A 13-year-old dog went into cardiopulmonary arrest after insufflation of the abdominal cavity with nitrogen for laparoscopy. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. Necropsy findings included a punctured spleen and confirmed the development of air embolism. 相似文献

Carval syndrome is a severe heartworm infection where the worms have migrated to the right atrium and vena cava; this condition is associated with a myriad of clinical signs. Several non-surgical and interventional methods are currently used for mechanical worm removal. However, the success rate and complications related to these methods are heavily dependent on methodology and retrieval devices used. In this study, we developed a catheter-guided heartworm removal method using a retrieval basket that can easily access pulmonary arteries and increase the number of worms removed per procedure. With this technique, we successfully treated four dogs with caval syndrome. 相似文献
