OBJECTIVE--To evaluate the efficacy of 1% sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) for prevention of experimentally induced abdominal adhesions in horses. STUDY DESIGN--Prospective, controlled, experimental study. ANIMAL POPULATION--Twelve healthy adult horses. METHODS--The effect of 1% SCMC on adhesion formation was evaluated in 12 healthy horses by using an established model of serosal trauma to induce intraabdominal adhesions. After ventral median celiotomy, 2 separate areas of the jejunum were abraded, and three 2-0 chromic gut sutures were placed in each abraded area. Jejunal resection and end-to-end anastomosis was performed at 2 sites distant to the abrasion sites. In treated horses (n = 6), 2 L of 1% SCMC was applied to the intestine before and after intestinal manipulation. In control horses (n = 6), 2 L of saline solution were applied to the intestine before and after surgical manipulation. All horses were euthanatized 10 days after surgery, and the abdominal cavity was evaluated for adhesion formation. The frequency of intraabdominal adhesions between groups was compared with a chi-square test. Statistical significance was set at P <.05. RESULTS--All control horses had intraabdominal adhesions. Fibrous adhesions were associated with both jejunal abrasion sites in 5 control horses. Fibrous adhesions were also associated with 1 or both jejunal anastomotic sites in 5 control horses. Only 1 treated horse developed adhesions at the jejunal abrasion sites, and no adhesions were present at the anastomotic sites in the treated horses. There were significantly fewer adhesions in the SCMC treatment group compared with the control group (P <.05). CONCLUSION--In this experimental model, application of 1% SCMC reduced the frequency of intraabdominal adhesions at areas of serosal abrasion and at jejunal anastomotic sites. CLINICAL RELEVANCE--In horses at an increased risk for developing intraabdominal adhesions after intestinal surgery, the use of 1% SCMC during celiotomy may decrease the frequency of adhesion formation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare a double-layer inverting anastomosis with a single-layer appositional anastomosis, coated with either 1% sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) or 0.4% sodium hyaluronate (HA) solutions, in the small intestine of horses with respect to anastomotic healing and adhesion formation. ANIMALS: 18 adult horses. PROCEDURE: Midline celiotomy and end-to-end jejunal anastomoses were performed. In control group horses (n = 6), a double-layer inverting anastomosis coated with sterile lactated Ringer's solution was performed. In treatment group horses, a single-layer appositional anastomosis was performed that was coated with 1% carboxymethylcellulose solution (SAA + SCMC group horses, 6) or 0.4% hyaluronate solution (SAA + HA group horses, 6). An additional 500 mL of the respective treatment solution was applied to the jejunal serosal surface, and 2 jejunal serosal abrasion sites were created. Horses were euthanatized 10 days after surgery. Anastomoses and abdominal adhesions were evaluated grossly. Anastomotic healing was evaluated on the basis of bursting wall tension. RESULTS: Bursting wall tension was significantly greater in SAA + SCMC group horses, compared with control group horses. All intestinal segments failed at a point distant to the anastomosis. Significantly fewer adhesions were found at the abrasion sites of SAA + HA group horses, compared with control group horses. No differences were found in adhesion formation at the anastomotic sites among groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Coating a single-layer appositional jejunal anastomosis with SCMC or HA solutions does not adversely affect anastomotic healing. Application of 0.4% HA solution to the serosal surface of the jejunum significantly decreases the incidence of experimentally induced intra-abdominal adhesion formation in horses.  相似文献

Efficacy of a 1% solution of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) infused into the peritoneal cavity of ewes was evaluated for prevention of intraperitoneal adhesions resulting from surgery of the reproductive tract. Six ewes were assigned to each of 4 groups. Group-1 ewes were controls that underwent ventral midline celiotomy and exploration of the abdominal viscera. Group-2 ewes were treated similarly to group-1 ewes, except that a 1% solution of CMC (14 ml/kg of body weight) was infused into the peritoneal cavity. This group was studied to determine whether CMC would cause changes in the peritoneal cavity. Group-3 comprised ewes representing a uterine trauma model. Ewes underwent abdominal exploration, but in addition had a standard embryo collection technique performed on 1 uterine horn and hysterotomy performed on the opposite uterine horn. Group-4 ewes were treated like group-3 ewes, except that, similar to treatment of group-2 ewes, CMC was infused into the peritoneal cavity. All ewes were euthanatized and necropsied 12 to 14 days after surgery. Abdominal adhesions were evaluated, and an adhesion severity score was assigned to each ewe on the basis of number and severity of the adhesions. Ewes of all groups had abdominal adhesions. Significantly (P less than 0.05) lower adhesion score was observed in ewes given CMC (groups 2 and 4) than in the adhesion model (group 3). Significant difference was not observed in adhesion score when groups 1, 2, or 4 were compared. Though not statistically significant, fewer adhesions were observed in ewes of groups 2 and 4 than in group-1 ewes.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine the prevalence of pathological abdominal adhesion formation following exploratory laparotomy; (2) to establish the site of adhesion formation and its relationship to the initial lesion; (3) to ascertain whether the development of intra-abdominal adhesions decreases long-term survival and (4) to identify risk factors for adhesion formation. Of 1014 horses treated surgically for acute gastrointestinal disease, 113 (10.1%) were subjected to repeat laparotomy, with surgical records available for 99 of these cases. Pathological adhesions were the most common diagnosis at repeat laparotomy (28%), followed by complications associated with the anastomosis (16%). Adhesions were not associated with the site of the primary lesion, resection, or endotoxaemia, consistent with the hypothesis that surgical trauma is the most important stimulus in adhesion formation. Together these findings strongly support the need for pan-abdominal, rather than site-specific adhesion prevention measures in all horses undergoing exploratory laparotomy.  相似文献

A new device (Chapingo device) to deposit semen at the base of the uterine horns of cattle was developed at Universidad Autonoma Chapingo, Mexico. Nine Holstein heifers were inseminated by transvaginal laparoscopy, using a laparoscope for cattle and the Chapingo device. A dose of sexed semen (2.1 × 106 spermatozoa) was deposited at the base of the uterine horn ipsilateral to the ovary where the preovulatory follicle was identified. Insemination was achieved in all the heifers, taking on average 13.7 ± 3.1 min per animal. In all cases, it was possible to see both ovaries, the base of the uterine horns and the oviducts. After the procedure, none of the heifers showed any type of complications such as haemorrhage, adhesions or trauma. On days 21 and 22 after insemination, four of the nine heifers (44.4%) returned into oestrus; on day 30 after insemination, one heifer was found to be pregnant by ultrasound. The results show the feasibility of generating pregnancies by transvaginal laparoscopy in heifers inseminated with sexed semen.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare laparoscopic dissection with-laparoscopic dissection combined with abdominal instillation of ferric hyaluronate gel for the treatment of experimentally induced adhesions in pony foals. ANIMALS: 12 healthy pony foals. PROCEDURE: A serosal abrasion method was used to create adhesions at 4 sites on the jejunum (day 0). At day 7 laparoscopy was performed and the adhesions observed in each foal were recorded. In group-1 foals (n = 6), the adhesions were separated laparoscopically (treatment 1). In group-2 foals (n = 6), 300 mL of 0.5% ferric hyaluronate gel was infused into the abdomen after the adhesions were separated laparoscopically (treatment 2). At day 24, terminal laparoscopy was performed and the adhesions observed were recorded. Total number of adhesions within each group was compared between day 7 and 24. Data were analyzed to determine whether an association existed between the number of adhesions on day 24 and treatment type. RESULTS: At day 24, the number of adhesions was significantly decreased within each group, compared with the number of adhesions at day 7 (group-1 foals, 10 vs 22 adhesions; group-2 foals, 3 vs 20 adhesions). Treatment 1 was associated with a significantly higher number of adhesions at day 24, compared with treatment 2 (odds ratio, 4.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.03 to 23.02). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Abdominal instillation of 0.5% ferric hyaluronate gel after laparoscopic dissection was a more effective technique than laparoscopic dissection alone to treat experimentally induced adhesions in pony foals. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis following abdominal surgery in foals is a safe and effective technique.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a bioresorbable hyaluronate-carboxymethylcellulose membrane (HA-membrane) for prevention of experimentally induced abdominal adhesions in horses. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMAL POPULATION: Twelve healthy adult horses. METHODS: The effect of an HA-membrane on adhesion formation was evaluated in 12 healthy horses using an established model of serosal trauma to induce adhesions. A ventral median celiotomy and two jejunal resections and end-to-end anastomoses were performed. Two separate jejunal areas were abraded, and three 2-0 chromic gut sutures placed in the abraded areas. In treated horses (n = 6), HA-membranes were applied to the jejunum to completely cover the anastomoses and abraded areas of jejunum. Nontreated horses (n = 6) served as controls. All horses were killed 10 days after surgery. The abdominal cavity was evaluated for adhesion formation. The frequency of intra-abdominal adhesions between groups was compared with a chi2 test with statistical significance set at P < .05. RESULTS: All control horses had intra-abdominal adhesions; fibrous adhesions were associated with both jejunal abrasion sites in 5 horses. One treated horse developed adhesions. There were significantly fewer adhesions in the HA-membrane-treated group (P < .0034). CONCLUSIONS: In this experimental model, application of an HA-membrane to a localized area of serosal trauma reduced the frequency of intra-abdominal adhesion formation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Application of an HA membrane may decrease the frequency of adhesions in horses at an increased risk of postoperative adhesion formation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of laparoscopic adhesiolysis in the treatment of experimentally induced adhesions in foals. ANIMALS: 8 healthy pony foals. PROCEDURE: Celiotomy was performed and adhesions created at the jejunoileal junction and at sites 0.5 and 1 m proximal to this junction, using a serosal abrasion method. Ten days after celiotomy, exploratory laparoscopy was performed. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis was performed in the treatment group only (4 foals, randomly selected). Thirty days after the exploratory laparoscopy, a final laparoscopic examination was performed, and the foals were euthanatized. The number and characteristics of abdominal adhesions were recorded during laparoscopy 10 and 30 days after celiotomy and during necropsy. RESULTS: At 30 days after celiotomy, the number of adhesions in the control group was significantly higher than the number in the treatment group. In the control group, all adhesions observed during the exploratory laparoscopy were still evident at the final laparoscopy and necropsy. In the treatment group, adhesions did not form again after separation. During final laparoscopy and necropsy, a focal adhesion between the omentum and site of the initial laparoscope portal was observed in 5 of 8 foals. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The serosal abrasion model is useful for studying abdominal adhesions in foals. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis was an effective technique to break down experimentally induced adhesions in the early maturation stage of formation in pony foals. Studies are required to investigate prevention of de novo adhesions at the laparoscope portal sites.  相似文献

The effect of intraperitoneal sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) administration on clinical outcome and survival was evaluated in horses undergoing exploratory celiotomy for acute gastrointestinal disease. Comparison of variables was made retrospectively between 44 horses that had SCMC and 92 horses (controls) not treated with SCMC. Mean age, body weight, heart rate, packed cell volume and plasma total protein of horses at admission, and convalescent period were not significantly different between control and SCMC groups. No significant differences were noted between control horses and SCMC horses with respect to incisional infection, hernia formation, recurrent episodes of colic, clinical outcome, and long-term survival (>6 months). Seventy-six (83%) control horses and 34 (77%) SCMC horses survived long-term. Seventy (76%) control horses and 30 (68%) SCMC horses survived without complications and returned to their previous use. These results suggest that intraperitoneal use of SCMC does not adversely affect abdominal incisional wound healing, clinical outcome or long-term survival, however, the efficacy of SCMC in prevention of postoperative intestinal adhesions in horses requires further investigation.  相似文献

Postoperative abdominal adhesions are known to present clinical challenges to the surgeon. Adhesion formation is a balance modulated by the fibrinolytic system. The key components involved are the tissue plasminogen activators (tPAs) and plasminogen activator inhibitors (PAI-1 and PAI-2). Sodium hyaluronate (HA) has been shown to reduce the incidence and severity of adhesions in horses. The objectives of this study were to measure tPA and PAI-1 activity in equine peritoneum and evaluate the effect of 0.4% HA solution on local tPA and PAI-1 activity. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and local serosal trauma was induced by using an established abrasion model. Our study involved two groups: in the first group (n = 6) 0.4% HA was used in all intestinal manipulations, whereas in the second group (n = 6) sterile saline was used. Parietal peritoneum, jejunal seromuscular biopsies at abraded sites (AJ) and nonabraded sites, and peritoneal fluid samples were taken at time 0- and at 30-minute intervals up to 120 minutes. Peritoneum tPA activity was significantly decreased at 60 and 90 minutes. Interestingly, AJ contained significantly higher tPA activity than nonabraded sites at 30-, 60-, 90-, and 120-minute intervals in control horses. The increase in tPA activity with AJ in treated (HA) horses was significantly attenuated as compared with the control (saline). Detectable levels of PAI-1 activity could not be identified in our samples. The results of our study indicate that exploratory celiotomy in horses is associated with a significant decrease in peritoneal tPA activity, and HA significantly decreases the fibrinolytic response of the jejunum to surgical trauma. Further characterization of these responses will hopefully lead to new pharmacologic strategies for adhesion prevention.  相似文献

Intra-abdominal adhesions were created by localized serosal trauma in 11 adult ponies at three locations on the small intestine. Six ponies received verapamil hydrochloride (0.2 mg/ kg) subcutaneously every eight hours for three days, and five ponies received an equal volume of saline solution at the same intervals. The investigators were not informed which treatments the ponies received. Systolic, diastolic, and mean carotid arterial pressures and heart rates were measured six hours before surgery, and then 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 8 hours after the first treatment on each day for three days. One pony was euthanatized on day 13 because of colic, and the other 10 ponies were euthanatized 14 days after surgery. Scoring methods were used to assess the severity of adhesion formation and to grade the histologic appearance of the abraded sites. No significant differences were found for rectal temperature, packed cell volume, total plasma proteins, heart rate, and systolic, diastolic, or mean arterial pressures between control and verapamil-treated ponies. No significant differences were detected between the treatment groups for adhesion scores per abraded site, total adhesion scores per pony, the total number of adhesions per pony, or in the histologic scores.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) or a hyaluronate-carboxymethylcellulose membrane (HA membrane) on healing of the small intestine in horses. ANIMALS: 18 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURE: Midline celiotomy and 2 jejunal resection-and-anastomosis surgeries were performed. In treated horses, SCMC (n = 6) or a HA membrane (6) was applied to the jejunum to cover the anastomosis. There were 6 untreated control horses. Horses were euthanatized 10 days after surgery. For each horse, 1 anastomosis was used for histologic examination, and the second was used to determine intestinal bursting strength. Intestinal bursting tension, serosal granulation tissue, serosal fibrin deposition, and width of the fibrous seal at the anastomosis were compared among groups. RESULTS: 3 control horses had adhesions associated with the anastomosis, but none of the treated horses had adhesions associated with the anastomosis. Mean thickness of fibrin deposited on the serosal surfaces for the SCMC and HA-membrane groups was significantly less than that for control horses. Mean thickness of serosal granulation tissue, width of fibrous seal between inverted musculature, inflammatory cell infiltrate scores, and bursting tension did not differ significantly among groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Use of SCMC or application of a HA membrane to small intestinal anastomoses in horses resulted in fewer adhesions and decreased fibrin deposition, and it did not adversely affect anastomotic healing. In horses at increased risk for intra-abdominal adhesions, SCMC or application of HA membranes may decrease the frequency of adhesions without adversely affecting healing of small intestinal anastomoses.  相似文献

Videoendoscopy of the reproductive tract was performed in 87 Thoroughbred mares with histories of reduced fertility. During hysteroscopy samples for cytological, microbiological and histological examinations were obtained under visual control. Common findings in these broodmares included: (a) endometrial degeneration, as assessed by an uneven distribution or atrophy of endometrial folds and/or a scarred appearance of the endometrium (49 mares, 56%); (b) endometrial cysts of various sizes and locations within the uterus with the most common location being at the base of the uterine horns (48 mares, 55%); (c) fluid accumulation in the uterine lumen (28 mares, 32%). A few mares had transluminal adhesions (7 mares, 8%) and in 2 mares the adhesions appeared to obstruct one uterine horn completely. A solitary discrete lump was detected in the wall of the uterine body in one mare and the suspicion of it being a leiomyoma was confirmed histologically with the aid of a visually directed biopsy sample. Free intraluminal structures were present in the uterine lumen in 3 mares, including one inspissated blood clot and two suspected remnants of resorbing pregnancies. Flexible biopsy forceps and scissors passed through the working channel of the endoscope were used to sever small thin adhesions, but this method proved inadequate for multiple adhesions or cysts. Solitary endometrial cysts were removed by means of conventional rigid biopsy forceps passed alongside the endoscope, although bleeding from the operation site usually limited this type of intervention.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Treatments addressing variously theorised pathophysiological mechanisms of small intestinal adhesions have been reported. This study applied those classes of treatments to the most clinically relevant aetiology of post operative adhesions. HYPOTHESIS: Treatments addressing the pathophysiology of ischaemia-reperfusion induced adhesions would accordingly reduce the incidence of adhesions from this model. METHODS: Four classes of treatments were administered for 72 h to 16 foals subjected to complete ischaemia followed by reperfusion to create peritoneal adhesions. These groups were: 1) FPG group--flunixin meglumine (1.1 mg/kg bwt i.v., divided q.i.d.), potassium penicillin G (22,000 iu/kg bwt i.v., q.i.d.) and gentamicin (2.2 mg/kg bwt i.v., t.i.d.); 2) HEP group--heparin (80 iu/kg bwt subcut., b.i.d.); 3) DMSO group--dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) (20 mg/kg bwt [diluted in 500 ml normal saline] i.v., b.i.d.); and 4) SCMC group--sodium carboxymethylcellulose (500 ml 3% sterile solution intraperitoneally, administered only at the beginning of surgery). RESULTS: Post operative intestinal obstruction did not occur in any foal. After 10 days, necropsy revealed bowel-to-bowel adhesions in none of the FPG or DMSO groups, in 2/4 of the SCMC group, in 3/4 of the HEP group and 5/6 foals subjected to the procedure without treatment (UIR group). CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of the inflammation associated with ischaemia and reperfusion in foals treated with FPG or DMSO decreased small intestinal adhesions in foals. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Although anti-inflammatory therapy was shown to eliminate bowel-bowel adhesions in this controlled study, it must be remembered that clinical cases are without control. These therapies are advised to improve the result but are unlikely to eliminate the problem.  相似文献

In 14 bitches, laparotomy was performed between the 45th day and 54th day of gestation. In total, 89 foetuses were marked individually by means of transuterine injections of a radiopaque substance. After expulsion, each pup was provided with a colour code. By radiographs one day after birth, all pups of a litter could be identified by the radiopaque markings. In this way the order and presentation at birth of each pup could be compared with the uterine position and presentation at laparotomy. When after expulsion of a pup, one or more were left in each uterine horn, the next pup was produced by the contralateral horn in 43 cases (78·2%) and by the ipsilateral horn in 12 cases (21·8%). One horn was never observed to be completely empty before the other horn started expelling pups. In six of eight bitches in which each two uterine horns did not contain an equal number of foetuses, the first pup was born from the horn containing most pups. The presentation at birth has been observed in 73 pups. For five of these (6·9%), the presentation differed from the one observed at laparotomy; in all five cases the original posterior presentation had changed into an anterior one.  相似文献

Eighty crossbred gilts were assigned randomly to treatments: 1) removal of an ovary and ipsilateral uterine horn (UHO) at 130 d of age and removal of the remaining ovary and uterine horn 12 d post-puberty; 2) UHO at 130 d of age, mated and reproductive tracts recovered when slaughtered at 30 d of gestation; 3) UHO 12 d post-puberty, mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation and 4) unoperated controls that were mated and slaughtered at 30 d of gestation. Age of puberty was not affected by treatments. Gilts in treatment 1 had a mean ovulation rate at the pubertal estrus comparable to gilts in treatment 3. But, gilts in treatments 2 and 3 had 16% fewer (P less than .01) corpora lutea at 30 d of gestation than control gilts. Length and weight of the remaining uterine horn at 12 d post-puberty for gilts treated at 130 d of age were similar to the averages of gilts left intact. Gilts with one uterine horn had 2.2 fewer live embryos at 30 d of gestation than control gilts (P less than .01). But, the proportion of corpora lutea represented by live embryos did not differ significantly among treatments. Gilts with one uterine horn had 1.1 fewer live embryos (P less than .15) after adjustment for number of corpora lutea, less uterine space occupied by each embryo (P less than .01) and less total placental membrane per embryo (P less than .05) than control gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Deep intrauterine insemination in pigs allows sperm deposition only into one uterine horn, but bilateral fertilization of oocytes occurs. How the sperm reach the contralateral oviduct remains disputable. The aim of this experiment was to study possible transperitoneal and/or transuterine sperm migration ways. Follicle growth and ovulation were induced in 24 peripubertal gilts with eCG and hCG 72 h after eCG. Endoscopic intrauterine insemination (IUI) was performed 32 h after hCG with 20 ml of extended semen (60 × 10(6) spermatozoa) as follows: Group CONTROL (n=8) received IUI into the right horn, and the left horn served as non-treated control; Group LIGATURE (n=8) received IUI into the right horn, and the left horn was closed by endoscopic double ligature close to the bifurcation; Group INTRAPERITONEAL (IPI; n=8) received IUI into the right uterine horn, the left horn was closed by double ligature and semen was deposited intraperitoneally at the surface of the left ovary. Genital tracts were removed 65-66 h after hCG, the oviducts were flushed and ova (n=299) were analyzed for fertilization and cleavage. Furthermore, the accessory spermatozoa count/oocyte was graded as 0, without spermatozoa, 1, <5 spermatozoa, 2, 5-50 spermatozoa, 3, 50-100 spermatozoa and 4, >100 spermatozoa. The results indicate that low dose IUI into one horn provides a lower grade of accessory spermatozoa in the contra-lateral side (1.6 vs. 2.8). No spermatozoa were found in ova flushed from oviducts of the ligated uterine horn, even after intraperitoneal insemination (P<0.05), and no fertilization occurred, respectively. Our results clearly indicate that after low dose IUI into one uterine horn, spermatozoa reach the contralateral oviduct via transuterine migration.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of metritis and subclinical hypocalcemia on reduction of uterine size in dairy cows using ultrasonography and sonomicrometry. Four piezoelectric crystals were implanted via laparotomy into the myometrium of the pregnant uterine horn of 12 pluriparous Holstein Friesian cows 3 weeks before the calculated calving date. Sonometric measurements were conducted daily from 2 days before parturition (= Day 0) until Day 14 after calving and then every other day until Day 28. Distances between adjacent crystals were expressed in relation to reference values obtained before calving. The diameter of the formerly pregnant uterine horn was measured using transrectal B-Mode sonography starting on Day 10. Cows were retrospectively divided into the following groups: cows without metritis (M–; n = 7), cows with metritis (M+; n = 5), cows with normocalcemia (SH–; Ca > 2.0 mmol/l on Days 1 to 3; n = 5) and cows with subclinical hypocalcemia (SH+; Ca < 2.0 mmol/l in at least one sample between Days 1 and 3; n = 7). Metritis did not affect (P > 0.05) sonometric measurements, but the diameter of the formerly pregnant horn was larger (P ≤ 0.05) between Days 15 and 21 in M+ cows than in M‒ cows. Reduction in uterine length in hypocalcemic cows was delayed (P ≤ 0.05) between Days 8 and 21 compared with normocalcemic cows, but the uterine horn diameter was not related to calcium status. In conclusion, both diseases affected reduction of uterine size until Day 28. Cows with metritis had a larger uterine diameter, possibly attributable to accumulation of lochia, and cows with subclinical hypocalcemia had delayed reduction of uterine length, presumably related to reduction of myometrial contractility.  相似文献

The objectives were to determine effects of cornual insemination on endometrial characteristics and uterine bacterial flora. Forty cows were assigned randomly (10/group) to each of the following treatments: 1) control--no uterine manipulation; 2) uterine body insemination--deposition of the inseminate at the internal cervical os; 3) cornual insemination--one-half of inseminate deposited into each uterine horn anterior to the internal bifurcation and 4) cornual insemination plus endometrial biopsy--insemination into each uterine horn and trauma induced by endometrial biopsy. Animals were slaughtered and reproductive tracts were removed 5 d after treatment. Bacterial populations of the uterine lumen were evaluated by both flushings and swabbings of each horn. Treatment did not influence the presence of luminal bacteria as determined by flushing or swab samples. Gross endometrial characteristics were quantitated in all tracts. Characteristics considered were total endometrial surface area, discolored regions that appeared to be distinctly darker than the remaining portion of the endometrium and obvious surface damage. Discolored regions were evaluated as both total areas and percentage of endometrium. Treatment did not influence total or percent discolored areas. Microscopic evaluation of these tissues revealed increased edema when compared with nondiscolored regions but no disruption of the luminal epithelium was found. Surface damage was found only in the biopsied treatment group. Observation of the endometrium revealed that extensive regeneration occurred by 5 d after treatment. The data suggest that cornual insemination does not result in uterine trauma or bacterial presence 5 d after breeding, and the endometrium is capable of regeneration after trauma during estrus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy and safety of IP administration of high-molecular-weight carboxymethylcellulose (HMW CMC) for the prevention of postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions in ponies. ANIMALS: 10 ponies. PROCEDURE: A 1% solution of HMW CMC was instilled intra-abdominally prior to surgery in 5 ponies, whereas 5 control ponies did not receive HMW CMC. Postoperative adhesions were induced by use of a bowel-abrasion method comprising laparotomy, typhlotomy, and abrasion of jejunal serosa at multiple sites with placement of 3 sutures at each site. Day of surgery was day 0. After surgery, ponies were monitored, and hematologic, serum biochemical, and peritoneal fluid analyses were performed on days 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10. On day 10, ponies were euthanatized. Intra-abdominal adhesions were recorded, and tissue samples were collected for histologic examination. RESULTS: A significantly greater number of adhesions, number of multiple adhesions, and mean incidence of adhesions were identified in control ponies, compared with CMC-treated ponies. Mean peritoneal fluid WBC count on day 7 and serum fibrinogen concentrations on days 5 and 7 were significantly higher in control ponies, compared with CMC-treated ponies. Results of serum biochemical analyses did not differ significantly between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Intra-abdominal use of 1% HMW CMC during surgery was effective for preventing postoperative adhesions in ponies. Use of HMW CMC did not have detrimental effects on wound healing, intra-abdominal defenses, or patient health. A 1% solution of HMW CMC may be used routinely during abdominal surgery of horses for prevention of postoperative adhesions.  相似文献
