The potential of solid waste originating from a recirculated fish culture system, i.e. faecal material, uneaten food pellets and bacterial biofilms was examined as food source for the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor. These polychaetes could be a valuable food for fish if they provide essential fatty acids to the fish. Therefore, we analysed the fatty acid profiles from feed and faecal materials, the sediment as well as the cultured organisms — fish and several batches of N. diversicolor — from an integrated recirculating aquaculture system. The major fatty acids (saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) for all analysed fish feed, fish and faeces samples were C16:0, C18:1 and C22:6 (n − 3), accounting for 48% to 57% of the fatty acids in the samples. The major fatty acids within the sediment were C16:0, C18:1 and C18:3 (n − 3), accounting for 61% of the total fatty acids. The samples of N. diversicolor revealed C16:0, C18:1 and C20:5 (n − 3) as the major fatty acids. Combined, they accounted for 56% of the total fatty acids detected within the worm samples. The results indicate that a recycling or even an upgrade of excreted feed nutrients such as fatty acids, which were otherwise discharged, can be achieved through integrated aquaculture combining fish and worm culture.  相似文献

Marine sediments at intensive fish farming sites in Bolinao‐Anda, northwestern Philippines, are characterized by strong oxygen depletion and the widespread predominance of sulphidic conditions precluding macrobenthic infauna. In less affected areas, however, small macrobenthos (Spionide polychaetes) was present. Experimental sediment mesocosms containing burrowing polychaetes were set up to investigate the possible links between macrofaunal bioturbation of the sediment and its proteolytic capacity to recycle protein‐rich fish farming waste. Relative to polychaete‐free sediment, the addition of small Spionide polychaetes had no significant effect on the proteolytic capacity but caused an increase in the redox potential. On the other hand, the addition of large Eunicide polychaetes caused an increase in both the proteolytic capacity and the redox potential. The deposition of commercial fish feed particles increased the proteolytic activities but decreased the redox potential particularly at a higher deposition rate (250 g m?2 day?1). Accumulation of hydrogen sulphide increased at deposition rates above 83 g m?2 day?1 and limited the survival of large polychaetes.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of polychaete Nereis diversicolor in bioremediation of waste water and its growth performance and fatty acid composition in an integrated culture system with great sturgeon, Huso huso. Three treatments consisting of N. diversicolor fed with H. huso waste (FNW), N. diversicolor fed with fish feed waste (NW), and fish waste without the worm (FW) were considered at water temperature of 23°C for 8 weeks. The obtained results demonstrated that N. diversicolor in the flow‐through system could grow via feeding with the fish waste water. The pure production and survival rate of harvested Nereis in NW treatment were significantly higher than those of FNW treatment (< .05). However, no significant difference was observed in specific growth rate and weight gain between these two treatments (> .05). The highest removal efficiency of waste water including total nitrogen (56%), total phosphorus (53%), NO2‐N (91%), NH3‐N (35%), PO4‐P (47%), BOD5 (60%) were seen in FNW treatment. Also, the highest additional efficiency of NO3‐N occurred in FW (37%) treatment. Certain fatty acids specifically 20:5 ω3 (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]) and 22:6 ω6 (docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) were also abundant in Nereis, and analysis revealed some differences due to the diet. These results demonstrated that the promotion of growth by cultured Nereis can enhance the decomposition rate of organic matter in enriched sediment and minimize negative effects in fish farms. These results also suggest that the use of N. diversicolor is an excellent potential candidate for an integrated aquaculture and nutrient recycling including the removal of organic wastes.  相似文献

Perinereis aibuhitensis is a marine polychaete living in intertidal zones that has important economic values. The present study investigated the effects of density on growth, body component and indices of antioxidant status of P. aibuhitensis as well as content of total nitrogen in sediments. When density was above 600 ind/m2, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio both decreased, suggesting that the optimal density ranged from 400 to 600 ind/m2. Survivorship and content of crude protein of P. aibuhitensis significantly decreased at densities above 700 ind/m2. At densities above 700 ind/m2, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as well as contents of methane dicarboxylic aldehyde (MDA) were significantly up‐regulated, suggesting oxidative stresses to clamworms, which might explain the reduced survivorship. Moreover, total nitrogen content in sediment per kilogram of P. aibuhitensis significantly increased at density above 600 ind/m2, suggesting that high density resulted in the extra release of N to the environment, which might pollute the habitats and become toxic to clamworms.  相似文献

Prostaglandins are involved in the reproductive processes in a variety of animals, including crustaceans. It was found that polychaetes, the best maturation diet for shrimp broodstock, possessed the greatest variation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) when compared with other live feeds. The level of PGE2 varied according to sizes, feed intake, sources and type of polychaete. The matured and also larger sand polychaete Perinereis sp. contained higher PGE2 levels than younger and smaller sand polychaetes (18.16 ± 5.82 ng PGE2 mg−1 protein for polychaetes at an average length of 10 cm up to 160.8 ± 37.09 ng PGE2 mg−1 protein for polychaetes at an average length of 17 cm). The PGE2 levels in ovaries and haemolymph of female shrimp fluctuated with the developmental stage of the ovaries. The highest concentration of PGE2 in haemolymph was at stage 3 of ovarian development, whereas the highest concentration of PGE2 in shrimp ovaries was at stage 4. In vitro incubation of Penaeus monodon pre-vitellogenic oocytes with polychaete extract and synthetic PGE2 demonstrated that both PGE2s enhanced oocyte development, especially during late development and ovulation. The putative role of PGE2 from polychaetes or the presence of PGE2 in polychaetes may be a factor in their role as a dietary constituent required for shrimp oocyte development.  相似文献

Knowledge of broodstock manipulation, gametogenesis, artificial fertilization and larval nutrition is a prerequisite to reach a large‐scale production of the polychaete Hediste diversicolor. In this study, the characteristics of oogenesis and spermatogenesis and embryonic and larval development were observed. Moreover, the effect of temperature on embryonic development and effect of diets and sediment on earlier juvenile development were tested. Mature oocytes were characterized by a spherical shape with a diameter of about 200 μm. They showed radial symmetry with a large centric nucleus surrounded by four distinctive layers. Embryo cleavage started between 4 and 10 hr after fertilization, and developed to the swimming trochophore stage after 5–6 days after fertilization at 11°C. The rate of embryonic development increased with a temperature increase from 6.1 to 21.2°C. The trochophore larvae increased in length from day 9 and commenced differentiation into 3‐setiger stage larvae at day 12. The length growth of larvae until 7‐setiger stage was 0.43 mm/day when fed with fish feed, while those fed shellfish diet and smolt sludge both grew around 0.21–0.23 mm/day. The results suggest that fish feed is a superior diet compared to shellfish diets and smolt sludge for the early larval stage of H. diversicolor.  相似文献

Shellfish aquaculture is growing worldwide and previous studies have shown a range of associated environmental impacts. In the Firth of Thames, New Zealand, there are more than 2000 ha of existing and approved farm area with applications pending for approximately another 6000 ha, however, no previous studies have examined the impacts of mussel culture in this region. To determine the impact of a mussel farm (45 ha) in the Firth of Thames we measured sedimentation rates by deploying sediment traps, sediment characteristics by collecting sediment cores and sediment oxygen and nutrient fluxes by deploying benthic chambers in four seasons. Sedimentation under the farm was increased by 106 g m− 2 d− 1 compared to the reference site. Similarly sediments under the farm had elevated organic carbon, nitrogen, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment concentrations indicative of the additional organic input due to bivalve biodeposition. Oxygen consumption was higher under the farm compared to a reference site (1.1-2.1×) but this increase was only significant (p < 0.001) in summer when rates reached 3083 μmol m− 2 h− 1 under the farm. Ammonia release rates ranged from 80 to 319 μmol m− 2 h− 1 and were higher under the farm compared to the reference site in spring (1.8×, non-significant p = 0.588) and autumn (3×, significant p = 0.006) but in summer release rates at the reference site (275 μmol m− 2 h− 1) were 1.4× higher than those under the farm. Nitrate fluxes (3.1 to 21.8 μmol m− 2 h− 1) were significantly (p = 0.001) higher at the farm site. Oxygen and nutrient fluxes generally demonstrated the typical response to increased organic input due to sedimentation from mussel culture. Unusually low nitrogen release rates in summer may indicate enhanced denitrification under the farm. Benthic regeneration at the reference site could supply 74% of nitrogen required by pelagic primary producers whereas under the farm it could account for 94%. This demonstrates the importance of benthic nutrient regeneration in this region and that mussel culture can lead to a redistribution of nutrients. The farm we studied is small and located in a high-energy environment and impacts from larger farms or in areas where biodeposit dispersal is limited are likely to be even more significant and we suggest that site-specific hydrodynamic and biogeochemical conditions have to be taken into account when planning new mussel farms to prevent excessive modifications of nutrient dynamics.  相似文献

Polychaetes are commercially exploited as fishing bait and supplemental diet to crustacean and finfish broodstock. However, scarcity of supply and biosecurity issues limits its use. Polychaete aquaculture has become the best alternative to wild resources. In this study, two different culture techniques (1‐sediment tank throughout the culture period and 2‐nursery tank with bioflocs for 30 days; thereafter, juveniles were transferred to sediment tank until harvest) using two diets [bioflocs (BF) and feed mill sweepings (FS)] were tested to determine the survival, growth and biomass of polychaete Marphysa iloiloensis (Glasby et al., Zootaxa, 2019, 4674) in the grow‐out. The 180‐day trial was conducted in 16 tanks (0.20 m2) stocked with 5,066 ± 575 M. iloiloensis trochophore larvae/tank which were assigned randomly into four culture treatments with four replicates each. The treatments were labelled as: (a) BFS – fed BF in sediment tank for 180 days; (b) BF + BFS – fed BF in nursery tank for 30 days, juveniles were transferred in sediment tank and fed BF for another 150 days; (c) FSS – fed FS in sediment tank for 180 days; and (d) BF + FSS – fed BF in nursery tank for 30 days, juveniles are transferred in sediment tank and fed FS for another 150 days. Results showed that polychaetes in BF + FSS had significantly higher survival than BFS. Polychaetes in both BF + FSS and FSS had significantly higher body weight than BF + BFS and BFS, while biomass in BF + FSS (175.73 ± 42.25 g/tank) was significantly higher compared to other treatments (p < .05). Polychaetes fed with FS had 61%–64% protein and 12%–13% fat, while those fed with BF exclusively had 66%–70% protein and 3.50%–4.50% fat. The findings indicate that FS whether or not BF is included in the diet can improve both survival and growth of polychaetes but significantly higher biomass can be achieved with the combination of BF and FS. Additionally, polychaetes in BF + FSS contained 64% protein and 13% fat. Therefore, BF can be used as an alternative diet to FS in the early life stages of M. iloiloensis and nursery rearing using BF is imperative to increase its biomass in the grow‐out production.  相似文献

A possible factor behind the successful use of polychaetes for prawn broodstock diet was investigated. Some steroid hormones in polychaetes have been suspected as being a potential component for prawn reproductive system development. Progesterone (P4) and 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone (17α-OHP4) were extracted from polychaetes (Perinereis sp.) and female Penaeus monodon broodstock at various maturation stages. Concentration of both hormones was determined using RIA or HPLC. Immature natural polychaetes (2 months old) displayed the highest level of P4 and 17α-OHP4 compared to more mature ones (4, 6 and 8 months old polychaetes) (47.48 ± 6.70 ng P4/mg Protein and 143.74 ± 28.70 ng 17α-OHP4/mg Protein) whereas opposite results were received with cultured polychaetes in which a reverse relationship between P4 and its derivative with polychaete maturation was obtained. Diverse concentrations of both hormones may be linked with other factors such as types of polychaetes, habitats, seasons, and feed intakes. Twenty-four hours in vitro incubation of prawn previtellogenic oocytes with P4 or 17α-OHP4 extracted from polychaetes or with synthetic hormones, significantly increased percentages of vitellogenic oocytes and oocytes with cortical rod compared to the control with no hormones. P4 was more effective in enhancing the final maturation of oocytes while 17α-OHP4 had more effects on vitellogenic oocytes. Synthetic steroid hormones at equal hormone concentrations produced similar results to steroid hormones extracted from natural polychaetes.  相似文献

The present intensive aquaculture results in an excessive accumulation of nutrient and organic residues in sediment. Then, pollutants accumulated in sediment would strongly affect water quality and increase the occurrence of pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, remediation of sediment is needed for removing excess nutrient and preventing aquatic animal diseases. In the present research, sediment in cement tanks was remediated with a combined method: crushed oyster shells (OS) and bottom microporous aeration (MA) treatment. The experiment included the control group (CK), treatment 1 (bottom MA), treatment 2 (crushed OS), and treatment 3 (bottom MA and crushed OS, MA+OS). The experimental results showed that from the second week after the experiment began, the organic matter (OM) content in the sediment from MA+OS was lower than that of the CK. From the eighth week, the total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4‐N) levels in the sediment from MA+OS were lower than those of CK, and the remediation experiments on sediment had little effect on the water quality in the experimental groups. Functional bacteria in the water column, including the families Erythrobacteraceae and Microbacteriaceae and the genera Phenylobacterium and Beggiatoa, were elevated in MA+OS. Thus, crushed OS and bottom aeration could promote nitrification in water, reducing the levels of OM, (NH4‐N), and TN in sediment, through affecting the microbiota in the water column and promoting nutrient circulation, and could improve the overall benthic environment. The method has been demonstrated to be easy and effective for nitrogen removal from sediment.  相似文献

The mussel and fish-farming impact was investigated both in pelagic and sediment environments of Mar Piccolo in Taranto. We studied the yearly distribution of microbiological indicators (heterotrophic bacteria and coliforms), in relation to physical and chemical parameters of surface water at three different sites, characterized by mussel farms, fish cages and Citro springs. The heterotrophic bacteria and Clostridium perfrigens distribution were also examined in relation to organic content and granulometry of sediments. The urban sewages affected the quality of waters of the mussel site, by increasing faecal coliforms in the entire basin during summer. In the benthonic environment the aquaculture activity increased the bio-deposition of the sediment, causing changes in the abundance and the composition (heterotrophic bacteria/clostridia ratio) of microflora. A significant increase of heterotrophic bacteria in the warm season was observed. The clostridia proved to be a good indicator of impact of organic matter because they were significantly higher in the sites than the control stations.  相似文献

The present work analysed the potential impacts of the enrichment of semi-intensive production earthen ponds with the ragworm Hediste diversicolor in the benthic dynamics and natural productivity. The macrobenthos and sediment characteristics were analysed in two enriched ponds and two control ponds in May, June and September 2005. The number of species, Margalef species richness and biomass (AFDW) were generally significantly higher in enriched than in control ponds, while for abundance no clear pattern was visible. Multivariate analysis showed differences in macrobenthic community structure of control and enriched ponds. Differences were also visible when the introduced species was removed from the data set, indicating that differences were mainly due to changes in other species abundance. In general, gastropods (Akera bullata, Jujubinus striatus, Hydrobia ulvae, Rissoidae), bivalves (Abra ovata, Cerastoderma spp.), crustaceans (Ampithoe rubricata, Dexamine spinosa, Gammarus insensibilis, Gammarella fucicola, Iphinoe tenella), and also some polychaetes (Desdemona ornata, Terebella spp., Syllis gracilis and Neanthes caudata) greatly increased their abundances in enriched ponds. On the other hand, the abundance of Tubificidae, Capitella spp., Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, Corophium acherusicum, and Mesopodopsis slabberi decreased. The organic matter content was significantly lower in enriched ponds, probably due to the positive impact of the polychaetes on sediment reworking, resulting in higher organic matter mineralization. Overall the present study indicates that stocking of earthen production ponds with H. diversicolor significantly altered community structure of benthic invertebrates and may improve environmental conditions for fish production by reducing the organic matter accumulation in pond sediments.  相似文献

Bait is an integral part of coastal life, but is perceived as a low‐value resource as fisheries are data‐limited, locally focussed and largely unregulated even though the ecological impacts of collection are considerable. An empirical assessment of three UK‐based ragworm fisheries combined with an analysis of published literature has produced the first global assessment of polychaete bait fisheries. The five most expensive (retail price per kg) marine species sold on the global fisheries market are polychaetes (Glycera dibranchiata, Diopatra aciculata, Nereis (Alitta) virens, Arenicola defodiens and Marphysa sanguinea). We estimate that 1600 t of N. virens per annum (worth £52 million) are landed in the UK with approximately 121 000 tonnes of polychaetes collected globally valued at £5.9 billion. Using remote closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor collectors, activity at local sites is considerable with a mean of 3.14 collectors per tide (day and night) at one site and individuals digging for up to 3 h per tide, although intensity differed seasonally and between sites. Collectors removed on average 1.4 kg of N. virens per person per hour, walking a considerable distance across the intertidal sediment to reach areas that were usually already dug. The implications of these human activity and biomass removal levels are explored in the context of fisheries and conservation management. At local, regional and national scales, polychaete bait fisheries are highly valuable, extract significant biomass and have considerable impacts; therefore, they urgently require governance equivalent to other fisheries.  相似文献

In order to utilize the biomass of the polychaete Sabella spallanzanii Gmelin as a dietary supplement for fish nourishment, we conducted some experiences of rearing this worm in the Mediterranean Sea. A preliminary study on the growth of this species on suspended plastic nets was conducted in two sites of the Apulian coast with different trophic features. Data for the first 12 months show that S. spallanzanii reared in eutrophic conditions grows producing a biomass higher than the natural population. The acquired experience was afterward tested in a pilot plant located in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto, a eutrophic area where polychaetes were co-cultured with Mytilus galloprovincialis within a long-line farm. The slight mortality recorded during the first 2 months and quite negligible after 4 months, the high increase in volume and biomass of the reared polychaetes, especially at high density (70 individuals for each net), demonstrated the advantage of rearing S. spallanzanii in the pilot plant with low cost of production and high profit. If the acquired technology is applied to a medium farm containing up to 400 sectors, the biomass produced indeed might reach about 1.36 tons/year. In conclusion, on the basis of our results, we demonstrated the possibility to obtain high-value worm biomass coupled to mussel biomass in a completely non-fed culturing system without increasing, but presumably reducing the environmental impact due to mussel farming.  相似文献

The abundance of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was investigated in the coastal marine sediments along the coast of Japan and South Korea. Sediment samples were collected from fish and shellfish farms between 2006 and 2008. As non-fish farming reference sites, sediments were also collected from highly eutrophic bays, a highly sulphidogenic saline lake, and the deep sea. A quantitative real-time PCR analysis that targeted the gene coding for a portion of the α-subunit of dissimilatory sulphite reductase (dsrA) was performed to assess the abundance of the SRB in the sediments. Between 2.8 × 107 and 2.5 × 109 copies of the dsrA gene per gram dry sediment were detected. There was no relationship between dsrA gene copy number and total bacterial count in the sediments, whereas organic matter contents (particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, ignition loss and chemical oxygen demand) and acid-volatile sulphide contents were significantly correlated with the dsrA copy number. The data presented demonstrate that organic enrichment of sediment may influence the abundance of SRB communities in coastal marine sediments and that the cell density of SRB may be used as a biological indicator for assessing pollution levels in sediments of marine fish farms.  相似文献

  • 1. Microhabitat preferences of freshwater mussels and associated substrate characteristics were investigated across a range of geomorphic reaches in the Hawkesbury–Nepean River, Australia.
  • 2. The structure of substratum patches available was strongly influenced by geomorphic reach type. In each reach type, mussel distribution was most frequently correlated with coarse sand and a roughness element characteristic for that reach. Roughness elements such as boulders and cobbles create a flow refuge and were linked with mussel size.
  • 3. Small mussels tended to be associated with boulder‐stabilized habitats and medium sized mussels with cobble habitats. Large mussels rarely co‐occurred with any particular roughness element. Individual species were strongly linked to geomorphic reach type. This association may be due to species' differences in ability to colonize available microhabitat types.
  • 4. The highly tolerant Velesunio ambiguus dominated shale reaches, characterized by fine sediments and human impacts. In contrast, Hyridella depressa dominated in gorges, utilizing small flow refuges among boulders, while H. australis were present in low densities across a range of substrate conditions.
  • 5. The persistence of multispecies assemblages in mussel beds throughout the Hawkesbury–Nepean River implies similar niche utilization among species. Partitioning of habitats across species on the basis of size suggests some degree of habitat selection, or differential survival. At the local scale, microhabitat characteristics influenced the size distribution and densities of mussel assemblages. Continuing declines in mussel densities are likely to result from ongoing channel modification and increased siltation resulting from changes to riparian vegetation.

Due to the tonic and nutritive virtues of sea cucumbers, increased commercial aquaculture has resulted in the expansion of breeding ponds, a primary form of sea cucumber production. Expansion of such production methods has led to increased settling of organic wastes onto the seabed, resulting in enriched sediments. Nitzschia sp. serves as an edible sea cucumber feed. Release characteristics of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from sediments in the presence of different biomass densities of Nitzschia sp. were studied via laboratory static cultures. pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the overlying water and biochemical components (i.e., protein, chlorophyll a) of Nitzschia sp. were assessed. When the biomass of Nitzschia sp. was more than (2–5) × 104 ind/cm2, the release of N and P nutrients was significantly promoted; additionally, the DO content of the overlying water was relatively high and the pH was relatively stable, which favoured the accumulation of proteins and chlorophyll a in Nitzschia sp. The results indicated that Nitzschia sp. promotes the release of N and P in sediments while absorbing them to maintain their own growth and promote the accumulation of nutrients, such as proteins, for the sea cucumbers. At the same time, the algae release oxygen, increasing the DO of the overlying water, providing a healthy breeding environment for the sea cucumbers. Application of Nitzschia sp. has the potential to reduce environmental harm caused by sea cucumber cultivation and thus achieve sustainable aquaculture.  相似文献

Intestinal bacteria in marine fish may produce antimicrobial substances which inhibit pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of a change of fish diet on the antimicrobial activity of the culturable aerobic gut microflora of Senegalese sole, Solea senegalensis. Pre‐adult 15‐month‐old fish previously fed on an artificial diet, were fed polychaetes (Hediste diversicolor), which form part of the natural diet of Senegalese sole. Samples were taken0, 3 and 6 weeks after start of the experiment from the stomach, small and large intestine of the fish. The bacterial strains isolated from these samples were sub‐cultured to pure cultures and stored at ?80°C. Several biochemical tests were run to obtain some basic phenotypic characteristics of the isolated strains. Amplification and sequencing of 16S rDNA fragments were used to identify the majority of the bacterial strains isolated. The identification by use of this molecular approach gave results in agreement to the phenotypic characterization. Feeding with polychaetes significantly increased (P<0.05) the numbers of presumptive Vibrio isolates in the gut. The number of bacterial strains with antimicrobial activity, as determined by two in vitro approaches, was significantly (P<0.05) increased by feeding with polychaetes.  相似文献
