Background
Despite the popularity of canine blood donor (BD) programs, there is scarce scientific information regarding iron status in this canine population of dogs. Objective
To assess iron status in dogs used in a blood donor program.Animals
A total of 130 healthy dogs (75 BD, 55 controls [C]) were included. A subset of dogs (n = 12) were used to evaluate the effects of repetitive donations by having a second and more recent sample analyzed. Methods
Serum iron concentration (SI), unsaturated iron‐binding capacity (UIBC), total iron‐binding capacity (TIBC), and percentage transferrin saturation (%SAT) were obtained. Values were compared using a 2‐way ANOVA (factors: BD status, breed). For the subset of BD, the first sample (less frequent donors ‐LD‐, after a mean of 3.8 donations) was compared to a second sample (experienced donors ‐ED‐, mean 13.6 donations) using a paired t‐test. Results
SI (183.7 ± 55.3 μg/dL) and %SAT (55.7 ± 17.4%) were higher and UIBC (152.6 ± 73.3 μg/dL) was lower in BD dogs than in C (153.9 ± 51.7 μg/dL, 43.8 ± 17.8%, and 224.1 ± 120.6 μg/dL, respectively). Also, UIBC and TIBC were lower, and %SAT higher in Greyhounds when compared with non‐Greyhounds. ED had decreased %SAT and increased UIBC and TIBC when compared with LD.Conclusions and Clinical Importance
Our canine BD population did not have iron deficiency and had higher SI concentration than C. However, ED (~14 consecutive blood donations every ~8 weeks) developed a mild iron deficiency, although values were still within canine reference intervals. Greyhounds have higher %SAT than non‐Greyhounds, which might be a breed‐specific peculiarity. 相似文献2.

Background
Iron deficiency is a proposed mechanism for the anemia that occurs in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Minimal research investigating the iron status of these cats has been performed. Objective
To compare indicators of iron status in cats with CKD versus healthy cats and cats with nonrenal illness (NRI). To compare indicators of iron status in anemic versus nonanemic cats with CKD.Animals
Thiry‐nine client or employee owned healthy cats, 40 cats with CKD and 34 cats with NRI included. Methods
Exclusion criteria included prior iron or erythropoiesis stimulating agent administration, blood transfusion, or concurrent CKD and NRI. Complete blood counts, serum chemistries, serum iron concentrations, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and ferritin concentrations were measured and percent transferrin saturation (TSAT) calculated on all cats. Data were analyzed using nonparametric statistical testing. Results
No statistically significant differences were detected among groups for iron concentration (P = .50), ferritin concentration (P = .47), or TSAT (P = .19). TIBC was significantly lower in CKD (median 262 μg/dL; IQR 233–302; range 165–488) versus healthy cats (median 316 μg/dL; IQR 272–345, range 196–464); (P = .0030). When comparing anemic (hemoglobin <9.5 g/dL) versus nonanemic cats with CKD, TSAT was significantly lower (P = .033) in anemic (median 20.2%; IQR 17.8–34.5; range 17.6–35.9) compared to nonanemic (median 29.0%; IQR 25.5–44.1; range 11.5–94.4). No statistically significant differences found for ferritin concentration (P = .94), iron concentration (P = .21) or TIBC (P = .97).Conclusions and Clinical Importance
These results indicate that an iron deficient state exists in anemic cats with CKD and is more likely functional rather than absolute. 相似文献3.

Inherited disorders of hemostasis encompass abnormalities in primary hemostasis, coagulation, and fibrinolysis resulting from genetic mutations. There is significant variation in the phenotype expressed ranging from life limiting to the absence of overt clinical signs. Von Willebrand disease is the most common primary hemostatic disorder in dogs, and hemophilia A is the most common coagulation factor disorder. The diagnosis of inherited bleeding disorders is made by functional and/or quantitative evaluation. Genetic testing has added to the knowledge base, allowing prevention through targeted breeding. Avoidance of trauma and injury is paramount in the prevention of bleeding in animals diagnosed with inherited hemostatic disorders. Current therapeutic options include platelet transfusions, broad replacement of coagulation factors (e.g., plasma), targeted factor replacement (e.g., cryoprecipitate), antifibrinolytic agents and specific factor replacement, and treatment of the symptoms (i.e., bleeding) with blood transfusions.

Serum samples from eight dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism, seven dogs with hypercalcemic lymphosarcoma (hypercalcemia of malignancy), and four dogs with primary hypoparathyroidism were submitted to the Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory at Michigan State University for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay. When compared with the adjusted total serum calcium concentration, the intact PTH concentration was consistent with the correct diagnosis in all cases. Two dogs with hypercalcemic lymphosarcoma were mildly azotemic. In both of these cases the intact PTH concentration was consistent with hypercalcemia of malignancy despite the presence of azotemia. These data support a significant role for intact serum PTH assay in the differential diagnosis of disorders of calcium metabolism. 相似文献

Background: Prior studies failed to detect significant association between hypoalbuminemia and small intestinal lesions.
Hypothesis: Use of pictorial templates will enhance consistency of interpathologist interpretation and identification of intestinal lesions associated with hypoalbuminemia.
Animals: Tissues from 62 dogs and 25 cats examined as clinical cases at 7 referral veterinary practices in 4 countries.
Methods: Retrospective, observational study. Histopathology slides from sequential cases undergoing endoscopic biopsy were examined by 4 pathologists by pictorial templates. Changes for 9 microscopic features were recorded as normal, mild, moderate or severe, and 2- and 4-point scales were tested for consistency of interpretation. Logistic regression models determined odds ratios (OR) of histologic lesions being associated with hypoalbuminemia while κ statistics determined agreement between pathologists on histologic lesions.
Results: There was poor agreement (κ=−0.013 to 0.3) between pathologists, and institution of origin of slides had effect (κ= 1.0 for 3 of 4 lesions on slides from Institution 5) on agreement between pathologists on selected histologic features. Using 2 point as opposed to 4-point grading scale increased agreement between pathologists (maximum κ= 0.69 using 4-point scale versus maximum κ= 1.0 using 2-point scale). Significant association ( P = .019– .04; 95% OR = 3.14–10.84) between lacteal dilation and hypoalbuminemia was found by 3 pathologists.
Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Substantial inconsistency between pathologists remains despite use of pictorial template because of differences in slide processing. Distinguishing between mild and moderate lesions might be important source of the disagreement among pathologists. 相似文献
