Seventy-five double-muscled cattle of the Belgian white and blue breed, two days to 50 months old and weighing 45 to 680 kg, were investigated. Transpulmonary pressure changes, measured with an oesophageal balloon, variations of air flow and volume at the mouth were obtained during spontaneous breathing to calculate pulmonary function data. Oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in arterial blood were also recorded. Growth related changes of the pulmonary function values were similar to those observed in other bovine breeds. Total pulmonary resistance, specific total pulmonary resistance, viscous work, power of breathing, specific viscous work, respiratory frequency and peak-to-peak change in transpulmonary pressure were greater in Belgian white and blue cattle than in Friesian cattle. In the former, tidal volume, specific tidal volume, lowest transpulmonary pressure during expiration, transpulmonary pressure at the functional residual capacity level, dynamic lung compliance and oxygen tension in arterial blood were smaller. Airflow, minute volume and carbon dioxide tension in arterial blood were similar in the Belgian white and blue and Friesian cattle. These results were related to the great sensitivity of double-muscled cattle of the Belgian white and blue breed to laryngitis and bronchopneumonia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess in vivo blood oxygen binding in double-muscled calves and dairy calves with conventional muscle conformation. ANIMALS: 58 dairy and 48 double-muscled calves. PROCEDURE: Calves were classified as neonatal (24 hours old) or older calves (2 to 26 days old). Venous and arterial blood samples were collected, and hemoglobin concentration, pH, PCO2, and PO2 were determined. Blood oxygen equilibrium curves (OEC) under standard conditions were constructed, and the oxygen exchange fraction (OEF) and the amount of oxygen released at the tissue level by 100 ml of blood (OEF Vol%) were calculated. RESULTS: In each breed, partial pressure of oxygen at 50% saturation of hemoglobin (P50) under standard conditions was significantly higher in older than in neonatal calves, indicating a right shift in OEC with age. Venous P50 was significantly lower in neonatal double-muscled calves than in neonatal dairy calves, but arterial and venous P50 were significantly higher in older double-muscled calves than in older dairy calves. In double-muscled, but not in dairy, calves, OEF was significantly higher in older than in neonatal calves. In neonatal calves, OEF Vol% was not significantly different between breeds, but OEF Vol% was significantly higher in older double-muscled calves than in older dairy calves. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The lower OEF in neonatal double-muscled calves, compared with dairy calves, could contribute to the higher sensitivity of double-muscled calves to hypoxia. Blood oxygen affinity decreased with age, but OEF and OEF Vol% were unchanged with age in dairy calves, whereas they increased with age in double-muscled calves.  相似文献

We studied, by means of echocardiography in vivo, the cardiac consequences of the double-muscled character selection in beef cattle. Morphologic and functional echocardiographic variables were regularly estimated in 17 Friesian and 8 Belgian White and Blue calves during their growth. A total of 50 and 44 sets of data were collected in each group, respectively. Recordings were obtained, using 2-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography, and included measurements in long- and short-axis views of the heart. Most of the diastolic measurements of the left ventricle were not significantly different between breeds when normalized for body weight. To the contrary, systolic measurements of left ventricular wall thickness and dimensions were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) lower and greater, respectively, in Belgian White and Blue calves than in Friesian calves. This was interpreted as a result of significantly (P less than or equal to 0.001) lower left ventricular systolic functional indices in Belgian White and Blue than in Friesian calves. Echocardiographic evidence that the double-muscled selection in cattle induces alteration in morphologic variables of left ventricle was not found. However, results indicate that indices of left ventricular systolic function are lower in double-muscled calves than in calves with standard conformation.  相似文献

Eleven double-muscled calves of the Belgian White and Blue breed and eleven Friesian calves have been investigated at rest, during exercise on a treadmill (11% incline; speed 1.3 m.sec-1) and 10 and 30 minutes after the end of this exercise. Blood gases and acid-base status were determined in mixed venous and arterial blood sampled from the pulmonary and the carotid artery respectively. Expired gases were collected in a balloon. The time of collection, volume of expired gases and fractional O2 and CO2 concentrations in expired gases were measured. In double-muscled calves, inadequate oxygen intake and carbon dioxide elimination were demonstrated by the increase in the carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) and in the hydrogen ion concentration [H+]a and the decrease in the oxygen tension (PaO2) in arterial blood during exercise. In Friesian calves, an adequate increase in oxygen intake occurred and no acidosis was recorded. A metabolic acidosis explained by only a 1.5-fold increase in the cardiac output and by the small increase in haemoglobin concentration was recorded in double-muscled calves. It was concluded that some aspects of the cardio-pulmonary and metabolic responses to exercise in double-muscled calves can be related to their inability to greatly increase their O2 consumption.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to study electrocardiographic features of double-muscled beef cattle. Electrocardiograms were recorded on one to six occasions from each of a group of 18 conventional calves of the Friesian breed and 29 double-muscled calves of the Belgian White and Blue breed. Ages of the calves at the times of examination ranged from eight to 348 days. The Holmes semi-orthogonal lead system was used. The waves and interval durations and the tridimensional P, QRS, and T modal vector orientation and amplitude were calculated. The magnitude of the cardiac vectors was significantly lower and the ventricular waves and QT interval duration significantly shorter in the double-muscled than in the conventional calves. The P modal vector pointed significantly less downwards and the QRS modal vector pointed significantly more forwards and less up- and rightwards in the Belgian White and Blue, than in the Friesian group. Most of the observed differences might be a consequence of the bodily, and more specifically the thoracic, conformation of the former calves. However, the lower cardiac vector magnitude and shorter wave and interval durations might also reflect lower cardiac mass in the double-muscled subjects.  相似文献

The effect of inhaling nitric oxide in the hypoxic pulmonary vascular response was measured in five calves anaesthetised with a combination of guaiacol, ketamine and xylazine. Alveolar hypoxia was induced by means of the inhalation of a gas mixture with an inspiratory oxygen fraction of 14–18 per cent. This alveolar hypoxia resulted in a pronounced pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure in hypoxic animals : 30·2 mmHg). Inhalation of 20 and 40 ppm of nitric oxide significantly attenuated the hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension. The effect ceased once nitric oxide administration was stopped. A concentration of 40 ppm of nitric oxide fully abolished the hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension (mean pulmonary artery pressure during inhalation of 40 ppm nitric oxide : 22·8 mmHg). Inhalation of nitric oxide had no effect on systemic arterial blood pressure nor on systemic vascular resistance. It was concluded that inhalation of 20 or 40 ppm of nitric oxide prevented a selective pulmonary vasoconstriction during alveolar hypoxia in calves, which may be helpful in the treatment of acute respiratory disorders in calves.  相似文献

The biochemical composition and biophysical behaviour of pulmonary surfactant samples isolated from healthy Belgian White and Blue (BWB) and Holstein Friesian (HF) calves have been investigated and compared. Interesting differences in composition have been demonstrated. In particular, a higher level of total hydrophobic surfactant-associated proteins (SP) (due to higher levels of SP-B and SP-C) is reported in HF calves compared to BWB calves. Higher levels of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and especially the disaturated form of PC were also found in HF as compared to BWB calves. No immediate effect on the surface tension properties evaluated by the pulsating bubble surfactometer was found between the surfactant samples of the two breeds under physiological conditions. However, since a high content of disaturated PC and the presence of the SP-B and SP-C are thought to be essential for the surface activity, we propose that the reported modifications could contribute to the apparently lower resistance of the BWB calves to respiratory troubles in comparison with HF calves.  相似文献

The cause of arterial hypoxia during natural infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus was studied in seven calves (three to nine months of age) originating from five herds with respiratory tract disease and serological evidence of infection with the virus. Blood gas values were measured during ambient air breathing and during 100 per cent oxygen breathing. The percentages of contribution to the arterial hypoxia from alveolar hypoventilation, mismatching of ventilation and perfusion, and right-to-left shunting were calculated from the measured parameters. Calculated percentages of total venous admixture varied from 14 per cent of cardiac output in relatively mild cases to 48 per cent in the worst affected animal. This venous admixture had been caused mainly by right-to-left shunting of blood, while mismatching of ventilation and perfusion became important in the more severely affected animals. Alveolar hypoventilation was only important in the worst affected animal.  相似文献

The purposes of the present study were: (1) to develop original equations to predict spirometric variables (SV) in healthy Friesian and Belgian White and Blue (BWB) calves < 1 year of age; and (2) to determine the effects of somatic growth on SV. Sixty-seven Friesian and 500 BWB calves were investigated. For each calf, the following SV were calculated: (1) the average minute volume derived using all the ventilatory cycles recorded during the 15 s of maximal ventilatory changes induced by lobeline administration (0.25 mg/kg, i.v.) (15-s LMV); (2) the maximal tidal volume, the maximal peak expiratory flow and the maximal peak inspiratory flow recorded from single breaths after lobeline administration (MVTL, MPEFLand MPIFL, respectively); (3) the ventilatory reserve (VRL= 15-s LMV - VEr; VEr= minute volume at rest). Mass specific (s) values were also calculated. All SV changed linearly with somatic growth in both Friesian and BWB calves. Since the rise in SV was more related to body weight than the age of calves, equations for reference values of SV always had body weight as the only independent variable. In the youngest calves, s SV were lower in the BWB breed. In the oldest calves (i.e. 1 year of age), s MPEFLand s MPIFLremained small in BWB calves whereas s MVTL, s 15-s LMV and s VRLwere almost equal in both breeds. These results could be related to the lower resistance to respiratory disorders in BWB calves < 1 year of age than in Friesian calves < 1 year of age.  相似文献

Five healthy Friesian calves and five double-muscled Belgian White and Blue calves were studied, using a 99m Technetium (99mTc) aerosol inhalation combined with a 99mTc macroaggregate injection and collimated scintillation counters. The inhalation-to-perfusion ratio (I/P) was calculated for both left and right sides of the thorax at four sites situated at three different levels in the auscultatory area on the same vertical axis and at a more anterior site just behind the scapulohumeral joint.I/P was higher in the left than in the right hemithorax. In both breeds, a vertical and a horizontal gradient were observed. I/P was higher in the lower and in the more cranial zones of the lungs. However the vertical gradient was more pronounced in Friesian calves while the horizontal one was greater in Belgian White and Blue animals. It was concluded that the factors affecting the topographical distribution of pulmonary ventilation and perfusion seem to be different in calves as compared to other species.  相似文献

A 506 kg Warmblood horse with colic was anaesthetized for exploratory celiotomy. Anaesthesia was complicated by arterial hypoxaemia which persisted throughout surgery from the induction of anaesthesia. After endotracheal extubation in the recovery box, a degree of airway obstruction probably occurred during a brief delay in naso-tracheal intubation. Signs of pulmonary oedema were seen shortly afterwards. Furosemide and oxygen were given. Arterial hypoxaemia was present [PaO2: 6.5 kPa (49 mmHg)] when FIO2 was an estimated 0.3. The horse recovered and stood after 45 minutes. It was re-anaesthetized 3 days later when arterial blood gas analysis did not reveal hypoxaemia. The horse was killed on this occasion; post-mortem examination revealed the presence of pulmonary oedema, which probably resulted from multiple causes.  相似文献

Some metabolic and endocrine effects of hypoxaemia were studied during halothane anaesthesia in six ponies. Each was anaesthetised twice; on one occasion a 20-minute period of hypoxaemia (arterial oxygen tension between 4.4 and 5.8 [mean 5.3] kPa) was imposed during 120 minutes of anaesthesia. On the second occasion arterial oxygen tension was maintained above 17 kPa throughout. Routine cardiovascular monitoring was performed and blood samples were taken to measure haematocrit, cortisol, insulin, glucose and lactate. Anaesthesia was associated with hypotension in both groups (mean ABP < 70 mmHg) but pulse rate changed little from control. Hypercapnia (PaCO2 > 7.0 kPa) developed in the normoxic group and acidosis was more severe than in the hypoxic group. Haematocrit changed little but was higher in the hypoxic group after the hypoxic period (0.39[0.06] vs 0.32[0.06] litre litre(-1)). Plasma cortisol increased significantly during anaesthesia in both groups (maximum values: hypoxic group 418[96], normoxic group 492[102] nmol litre(-1)) and there was no significant difference between them. Glucose concentration increased in the hypoxic group and was significantly higher than in the normoxic group during the hypoxic period (8.8[1.5] vs 6.4[1.5] mmol litre(-1)). Insulin decreased in both groups but this was significant only in the normoxic group (from 34[19] to a nadir of 12[9] iu ml(-1)) and the groups were not significantly different. Lacticacidaemia developed in both groups but was more severe in the hypoxic group (maximum values 2.3[0.6] and 1.3[0.5] mmol litre(-1)). It was concluded that 20 minutes of hypoxia during halothane anaesthesia in ponies did not markedly alter the stress response already induced by anaesthesia.  相似文献

Hemodynamic responses to acute pneumonia and to hypoxia were investigated in 10 newborn calves. Experiments were performed on heparinized, anesthesized and ventilated calves. Control calves were inoculated intratracheally with bovine fetal serum. Pneumonia was induced in treated calves by intratracheal inoculation with P haemolytica suspended in bovine fetal serum. Before inoculation (base line), at the time of inoculation (T = 0), and at 30-minute intervals for 3 hours, pulmonary arterial pressure (Ppa), systemic arterial pressure, cardiac output (CO), arterial blood gases, pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), and systemic vascular resistance were determined. At T = 0, calves in both groups became hypoxemic, alveolar-arterial O2 difference, PVR, and Ppa increased, and CO and systemic vascular resistance remained unchanged. At subsequent measurement intervals, all values returned to base-line in control calves, whereas treated calves had progressive hypoxemia associated with a decrease in Ppa and PVR, with no change in CO. Three hours after inoculation and after inhalation of 10% O2 in N2, PVR increased significantly in the control calves. In the treated group, hypoxia did not increase the resistance, compared with base-line and 3-hour values. The data indicate decreased Ppa during pneumonic pasteurellosis is because of a decrease in PVR and that pneumonia may attenuate the normal pulmonary hypoxic vasoconstrictor response.  相似文献

Forty-one and 55 records of right-sided and systemic arterial pressures, cardiac output, and end-diastolic and end-systolic right ventricular volumes were collected from a group of 6 conventional and 6 double-muscled calves, respectively. In each group, the mean right ventricular pressure-volume loop was constructed. Global cardiac performance was significantly lower in the double-muscled than in the conventional calves. The right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, as well as the diastolic portion of the mean pressure-volume loop, were similar in the 2 groups. Those results suggest that the reduced cardiac performance of double-muscled calves is not due to a lowered ventricular preload and that diastolic properties of their myocardium are similar to those of conventional calves. When expressed on a body weight basis, however, the right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were lower in the double-muscled than in conventional calves. When expressed as a function of probable metabolic demand, therefore, the volumetric capacity of the cardiac pump appears to be reduced in double-muscled calves. The significantly lower right ventricular ejection fraction, maximal rate of ventricular pressure rise and right ventricular peak-systolic pressure to end-systolic volume ratio measured in double-muscled as compared with conventional calves suggest that reduced myocardial contractility may also be partly responsible for the significantly lower stroke index of the former calves. The cardiac pump of double-muscled cattle thus seems to be less effective than that of conventional cattle because of reduced volumetric capacity and lowered strength of contraction.  相似文献

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIBS) was used to detect changes in brain oxygenation in five tranquilised calves that were placed on a hypoxic gas mixture (10 per cent O2/90 per cent N2) and hyperoxic gas mixture (30 per cent O2/70 per cent N2) for five minutes at each concentration. A NIRO 500 (Hamamatsu, Japan) was used for the NIBS, with the incident light source and separate detector (optodes) placed on shaved skin on the most dorsal surface of the frontal bone. Sequential arterial blood gas sample analyses provided confirmation of the appropriate change in systemic oxygenation status. By the end of the five-minute-period of breathing 10 per cent oxygen, NIBS of the calf head detected highly significant changes in haemoglobin oxygenation reflective of hypoxaemia, with oxyhaemoglobin decreasing by 23·5 units (P<0·01) and deoxyhaemoglobin increasing by 45·6 units, (P<0·01) from the baseline of breathing room air. Total haemoglobin (oxyhaemoglobin + deoxyhaemoglobin) showed a significant increase of 22·1 units (P<0·05) but there was no significant change in LAIRS determined cytochrome aa3 oxygenation. Concomitant blood gas alterations included significant decreases in Pa)2 (−27·8 mmHg, P<0·01), haemoglobin saturation (−29·0 per cent, P<0·05), and PaCO2 (−7·8 mmHg, P<0·05) and significantly increased blood pH (0·059, P<0·05). At the end of the five minutes of breathing 30 per cent oxygen NIBS of the calf head detected significantly increased oxyhaemoglobin (13·1 units, P<0·01) and decreased deoxyhaemoglobin (−13·7 units, P<0·05) when compared with baseline breathing of room aim. Total haemoglobin and cytochrome aa3 were unchanged from baseline. The accompanying arterial blood gas changes included significant increases in PaO2 (30·9 mmHg, P<0·05), arterial O2 saturation (11·7 per cent, P<0·05), and significantly decreased pH (−0·026, P<0·05), This study showed that NIRS can be used to continuously and non-invasively detect cerebral oxygenation changes in the live calf in response to both increased and decreased systemic arterial oxygen. Additionally, despite induction of profound hypoxaemia, cytochrome aa3 in the brain did not appear to become reduced.  相似文献

Pulmonary hypertension is a well-recognised condition in dogs, and, among other mechanisms, is caused by hypoxia. In order to evaluate the effect of chronic hypobaric hypoxia on pulmonary arterial pressure in dogs, a colony of 19 clinically and biochemically healthy Greenland sled dogs living permanently at at least 2300 m above sea level (altitude dogs) and 10 clinically healthy Greenland sled dogs living at 700 to 900 m above sea level (control dogs) were examined. Investigations were made of the dogs' packed-cell volume, venous and arterial blood gases, electrocardiogram, blood pressure and echocardiograph, including the calculation of pulmonary arterial pressure by Doppler examination of tricuspid regurgitation. The altitude dogs had a marked arterial hypoxaemia with a mean (sd) oxygen partial pressure of 61.9 (7.4) mmHg and a significantly lower arterial oxygen saturation (90.7 [3.7] per cent) than the control dogs (96.7 [0.8] per cent). In eight of the altitude dogs, tricuspid regurgitation allowed calculation of the systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, which was 29.5 (10.4) mmHg. Eight of the control dogs had tricuspid insufficiency, and their derived systolic pulmonary arterial pressure was significantly lower (17.4 [3.9] mmHg).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the timing of elective caesarean section (ECS) during parturition affects pulmonary and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life in healthy Belgian White and Blue (BWB) calves delivered at term. Vaginal palpation was performed and deliveries divided into six categories of timing for ECS: cervix closed (TECS 1); passive and active cervical dilatation (TECS 2 and TECS 3); full cervical dilatation (TECS 4); spontaneous rupture of allantoic (TECS 5) and amniotic (TECS 6) membranes. One hundred and eighteen BWB calves were examined at birth, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min and 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after birth using the following measurements: physical examination (time between birth and sternal recumbency [T-SR]); heart rate (mHR); arterial blood gas analyses (arterial partial pressure in oxygen [PaO(2)], in carbon dioxide [PaCO(2)], arterial haemoglobin oxygen saturation [SaO(2)], alveolo-arterial difference in oxygen [AaDO(2)]); pulmonary function tests using the oesophageal balloon catheter technique (respiratory rate [RR], total pulmonary resistance [R(L)], dynamic lung compliance [C(Ldyn)], tidal volume [V(T)] and minute volume [V(E)]); arterial and venous blood acid-base balance analyses (arterial and venous pH [pHa and pHv], bicarbonate concentration [HCO(3)a and HCO(3)v], base excess [BEa and BEv]); rectal temperature (RT); jugular venous blood sampling for determination of metabolic variables (blood glucose [G], plasma lactate [L], serum cortisol [C], plasma noradrenaline [NA] and adrenaline [A] concentrations); haematological variables (red blood cell count [RBC], total haemoglobin concentration [Hb], Packed Cell Volume [PCV]) and passive immune transfer variables (total serum protein [TP] and beta(2)gammaglobulin [beta(2)gamma] concentrations).TECS significantly (P or =4 calves, TECS< or =3 calves showed lower PaO(2), SaO(2), V(T), C(Ldyn), RT, G, NA, A, RBC, Hb and TP and higher AaDO(2), RR, V(E). TECS differences progressively decreased and disappeared between 6 and 12 h after birth in TECS 2 and 3 calves but remained up to 24 h in TECS 1 calves. Improved postnatal respiratory and metabolic adaptation in TECS> or =4 calves were mainly related to differences in exposure to labour and subsequent hormonal surge: catecholamines, particularly A, enabled more effective removal of lung liquid and/or release of surfactant which contribute to better gas exchanges and induced greater energy mobilization to maintain adequate body temperature. It was concluded waiting for full cervical dilatation before performing CS should be encouraged because it promotes postnatal respiratory and metabolic adaptation in full-term BWB calves.  相似文献

In domestic animals relatively little is known about the functions of hepatic microsomal enzymes and their role in biotransformation. In this study, antipyrine was used to assess microsomal oxidative function and particularly to determine the effect of age, sex and breed on drug metabolising enzymes. At birth, the elimination rate of antipyrine was very low as reflected by a half-life of 24 hours. The first two months of life were characterised by a steady decrease of antipyrine half-life values of three to four hours being reached at six months. The decrease observed during early life was not identical in the two breeds used in this experiment. By six months the Friesian calves eliminated antipyrine twice as fast as the Blue White Belgian (BWB) breed: 2.1 +/- 0.3 hours and 4.9 +/- 0.3 hours, respectively. The BWB breed is characterised by muscular hypertrophy and by a relative imbalance in muscle:body ratio. The apparent volume of distribution of antipyrine did not vary with age, sex and breed. No differences in antipyrine clearance were found between male and female calves.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the physiological status of calves at birth and the perinatal factors that might predispose newborn calves to debility and death, using criteria previously established for newborn lambs.

METHODS: Friesian mixed-aged cows and heifers on a dairy farm in New Zealand that were close to calving were separated from the main herd and observed 24 h a day until they calved. Cows in which labour did not progress for over 1 h or which were in distress were assisted. About 12–13 min after birth, rectal temperature was measured and a blood sample was taken from each calf. The packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma lactate, glucose and fructose concentrations were determined. The time to stand for each calf and the air temperature and weather conditions at birth were recorded.

RESULTS: The parameters measured were within normal ranges for newborns for the majority of calves. Calves sired by an Angus bull and born to heifers (AngusX) had significantly higher plasma lactate and fructose concentrations than Friesian calves born to cows, but there were no significant differences between the two breeds in any of the other parameters measured. Calves of both breeds born with assistance had significantly higher plasma lactate concentrations than those born without. Friesian calves that were assisted at birth had significantly lower PCvs and took significantly longer to stand than calves born without assistance. Assisted AngusX calves were significantly heavier than their unassisted counterparts. Calves born during windy and wet weather and when air temperatures were below 10°C had lower rectal temperatures, took longer to stand and had higher plasma glucose concentrations than those born in dry weather and when air temperatures were above 10°C.

CONCLUSIONS: Calves with physiological parameters outside the normal range had experienced difficult labour and/or intrapartum hypoxaemia. Placental insufficiency and maternal undernutrition during late pregnancy did not apparently contribute to neonatal problems in the present study.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess blood oxygen binding in calves with diarrhea. ANIMALS: 22 dairy and 26 double-muscled calves with diarrhea, 31 healthy dairy calves and 37 healthy double-muscled calves. PROCEDURE: Severity of disease, including the ability of affected calves to stand, was evaluated. Hydration and signs of depression were scored. Venous and arterial blood samples were collected, and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, ATP, chloride, inorganic phosphate, lactate, pyruvate, total protein, albumin, and hemoglobin concentrations, and Hct, pH, Pco2, and PO2 were determined. Oxygen equilibrium curves (OEC) were constructed under standard conditions, and oxygen extraction ratios were calculated. RESULTS: Recumbent calves of both breed-types were more dehydrated and had more severe signs of depression than ambulatory affected calves. In both breed-types, hemoglobin oxygen affinity was increased in calves with diarrhea, compared with healthy calves, as indicated by a decrease in standard partial oxygen pressure (P50). Diarrhea induced hypocapnia and hypothermia in the most severely affected calves, which counteracted the acidosis-induced right shift in arterial and venous OEC. Arterial and venous P50 were significantly less in double-muscled calves with diarrhea than healthy calves, whereas P50 for affected dairy calves were similar to those of healthy calves. Except in the most severely affected dairy calves, oxygen extraction ratio was significantly less in calves with diarrhea, compared with healthy calves. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Release of oxygen from blood may be impaired in calves with diarrhea, depending on the effect of the disease on certain blood biochemical variables.  相似文献
