Storage losses in moist hay treated with propionic acid were compared with those occurring in untreated moist hay in two experiments and with field-cured hay in three experiments. Dry matter losses in treated hays ranged from 41 to 8.6% and from 1.7 to 12.6% in untreated hays. Digestible organic matter losses in both treated and untreated hays were generally greater than dry matter losses. Only in one experiment did propionic acid application significantly reduce nutrient losses in moist hays. Nutrient losses, and water-soluble carbohydrate losses in particular, were shown to be correlated with maximum and cumulative bale temperatures during storage in two of the experiments. The rise in hale temperatures during storage was reduced in all three experiments, to a greater or lesser extent, by application of the additive. Loss of propionic acid from the hay during and after application was very large. In the three experiments 86.2, 85.3 and 85.6% of the acid applied was lost by the end of the storage period. Acid distribution studies indicated that variation in acid concentration within bales was as great as between bales. It was concluded that more research is needed into applicator design and position on the baler and into alternative application methods if the benefits of propionic acid as a moist hay preservative are to be fully exploited.  相似文献

This study determined effects of addition of lucerne hay (LH) as moisture absorbent on effluent reduction, fermentation and subsequent intake of maize (corn) silage by sheep. Treatments included maize forage ensiled without LH (LH0), with 50 g/kg LH (LH5) and with 100 g/kg LH (LH10) on a fresh weight basis. Silages were made in 150‐kg bags in triplicate. Upon opening, representative samples from each bag were taken twice weekly during a feeding trial and used for laboratory analyses in a completely randomized design. Silages were fed ad libitum to six ewes in a duplicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21‐day periods for intake and digestibility determination. Lucerne hay incorporation linearly increased DM, ash, water‐soluble carbohydrates, buffering capacity and pH of silages, while it linearly decreased ammonia nitrogen, acetic acid and ethanol concentrations (p < .05). Effluent volume linearly decreased from 33 ml/kg in LH0 to 0.8 ml/kg in LH10. Addition of LH resulted in a linear increase in intakes of organic matter and fibre in ewes, while digestibilities of these nutrients linearly decreased (p < .05). Lucerne hay addition improved fermentation parameters and resulted in increased intake of maize silage without having negative impact on aerobic stability.  相似文献

Forage legumes that contain secondary compounds are considered to be less susceptible to proteolysis than other legumes, with improved silage quality and possibly improved animal performance. This was investigated feeding five groups of growing lambs for 10 weeks, five silages composed of pure timothy (T; Phleum pratense), mixtures of T with red clover (Trifolium pratense; T‐RC, 50/50 on DM basis), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia; T‐SF), or both (T‐RC‐SF, 50/25/25), or a mixture of the two legumes (RC‐SF). Including SF and/or RC in silages improved silage fermentation as shown by higher lactic acid and lower soluble N and NH3 contents than in T silage. Voluntary intakes were higher with all the RC‐containing silages than with T and T‐SF. The T‐SF silage had the lowest, and RC‐containing silages the highest average values for daily gain, feed conversion efficiency, live weight and carcass weight. The differing effects of these silages cannot be totally explained by differences in their nutritive value and so may be due to their bioactive compounds impacting differently on feeding motivation and digestive efficiency. These results suggest that including RC in silages is a promising strategy to combine improved animal performance with reduced environmental pressure.  相似文献

A sampling procedure for estimating herbage intake by the ‘Difference’ method over short grazing periods using an electrically powered sheep-shearing head to cut long narrow sample strips, was compared with several indirect animal techniques on single-variety grass swards. The method provided intake estimates in good general agreement with those obtained by animal methods but discrepancies arose when used on a semi-prostrate variety due, probably, to incomplete recovery of sampled herbage cut from post-grazing residues. It was concluded that the method might be usefully adopted for the preliminary assessment of the intake characteristics of herbage varieties in routine evaluation programmes, provided that care is taken to ensure the efficient collection of herbage sampled post-grazing and that a reduction in the land requirement can be achieved without undue loss of accuracy or precision. Confirmation of results should be sought using animal methods when possible.  相似文献

Maize silages made in October were fed to forty-three autumn-calving cows during a 20-week winter feeding trial. The control silage received no additive whereas a non-protein nitrogen (NPN) additive was applied to the other silage at harvest time. The four experimental feeding treatments were: A, maize silage + 6 kg d?1 barley; B, maize silage with NPN + 6 kg d?1 barley; C, maize silage + 5 kg d?1’barley + 1 kg d?1 extracted decorticated groundnut cake; D, maize silage with NPN. The mean daily milk yields of cows on the treatments were 14.7, 15.1, 15.3 and 15.0 kg respectively. All cows received maize silage ad libitum. There were no significant differences in milk yield but the milk produced by the cows on treatment D had significantly lower concentrations of milk fat, protein and solids-not-fat when compared to the other three treatments. The cows on treatment D had a negative liveweight change which was significantly different (P < 0.05) from those of the cows on treatments B and C.  相似文献

Four sheep in a 4 × 4 Latin Square experiment were offered ad libitum grass meal pellets alone or supplemented with lactic acid at 600, 800 or 1000 mmol per kg dry matter (DM) intake, either mixed into the feed or continuously infused intraruminally for 6-d periods. When added to the feed lactic acid did not significantly affect DM intake but when infused intraruminally it significantly reduced DM intake especially at the highest rate of infusion. In a second 4 × 4 Latin Square experiment, four sheep were offered ad libitum grass meal pellets alone or supplemented with lactic acid mixed into the pellets at 900, 1200 and 1500 mmol per kg DM for 15-d periods. There was a small reduction in intake on the three lactic acid treatments but this was not significant. In a third experiment the effects of intraruminal infusion with lactic acid was studied further with four sheep which received infusions of lactic acid at a fixed daily rate of 40 mmol per kg W?0·75 per d or of an equal volume of distilled water for 3-d periods while being offered grass meal pellets ad libitum. Infusion with lactic acid resulted in reduced DM intake but the effect was less consistent than in Experiment 1. The fermentation quality of small‐bale silage and haylage for feeding to horses in Sweden, and using a conventional high‐density hay baler, was investigated in two experiments. Treatments studied were use of additives (inoculants containing lactic acid bacteria and a chemical additive consisting of hexamethylenetetramine, sodium nitrate, sodium benzoate and sodium propionate), the influence of dry‐matter (DM) content of wilted herbage and the effect of number of stretch film layers on fermentation pattern and aerobic stability. All silages and haylages were made from predominantly Timothy swards and were well fermented as indicated by low levels of ammonia and butyric acid. Values of pH were higher and concentrations of organic acids were lower in haylages than in the silages. This was not considered to be indicative of a poor fermentation in the haylage but of a restricted fermentation due to the high DM content of the herbage. The additives enhanced aerobic storage stability because of inhibition of mould growth. The only statistically significant effect of varying the number of stretch film layers was a higher content of CO2 inside the bales when ten layers of stretch film were applied compared with six layers.  相似文献

Elevation of mean air temperature related to climate change speeds up plant maturity, which influences mostly forage feed value. The objective of the study was to assess variation in hay quality harvested over 32 years at the same experimental site, and whether feed value is better predicted by combining agro-climatic variables with chemical composition. From 1979 to 2010, the in vivo digestibility (OMd) and voluntary dry matter intake (VDMI) of 271 hays, harvested during the first vegetation cycle on permanent grasslands, were measured in sheep. Over 32 years, the mean air temperature between February and August increased significantly by 1.34°C. Cutting date was advanced by 6 days, but the average sum of temperature at cutting (ST) increased significantly by 13%. Crude protein (CP) content declined (−22%, p < .001), crude fibre content increased (+8%, p < .001), OMd decreased (−3%, p = .012) and VDMI increased (+9%, p = .011). Changes in the chemical composition and OMd were consistent with the increase in ST. Finally, the prediction of OMd from CP and crude fibre contents (R2 = .57, RMSE = 2.99) was slightly improved by the addition of ST and hay drying time (R2 = .60, RMSE = 2.83). Climate change may have a negative indirect effect on hay quality if an earlier cutting date does not compensate for its effect on the faster maturation of the plants. Moreover, agro-climatic criteria could help to monitor and predict hay quality in relation to intra- and inter-annual climatic changes.  相似文献

Three grass silages were made from perennial ryegrass ensiled without additive application (U) or with the application of formic acid (F) or an enzyme mixture of hemicellulases and cellulases (E).
Analysis of silages showed that both untreated and enzyme-treated silages had higher lactic acid concentrations than formic acid-treated silage. Enzyme-treated silage had lower levels of ADF and NDF but higher concentrations of residual WSC than other silages.
The silages were fed to growing steers supplemented with either rapeseed meal (RSM) (60 g kg−1 silage DM) or fishmeal (FM) at a level isonitrogenous with RSM diets, so providing six diets (UR, UF, ER, EF, FR, FF). Organic matter intakes were similar, but ADF intakes were significantly ( P < 0·001) lower with enzyme-treated silage diets (UR, 1163; UF, 1160; ER, 1104; EF, 1035; FR, 1216; FF, 1213), as were intakes of NDF ( P < 0·01) (UR, 1946; UF, 1955; ER, 1877; 1772; FR, 2031; FF, 2041). Apparent whole tract digestibilities of organic matter were significantly ( P < 0·001) higher with enzyme-treated silages (UR, 0·644, UF, 0·644; ER, 0·668; EF, 0·678; FR, 0·633; FF, 0·633). Liveweight gains were generally higher with treated silage diets and RSM supported a greater response than FM (UR, 0·496; UF, 0·498; ER, 0·567; EF, 0·489; FR, 0·543; FF, 0·506) with both enzyme and formic acid-treated silages, although none of these differences were significant.  相似文献

Over a 24-week period during the 1986 summer, three groups of January- to March-calving dairy cows were either grazed conventionally (G) or grazed between morning and afternoon milkings and housed overnight and offered grass silage (Si) or a straw/concentrate mixture (St) ad libitum. The straw/concentrate mixture contained proportionately, 0-33 long barley straw, 0·28 ground barley, 0·12 soya bean meal, 0·25 molaferm and 0·22 minerals. The metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) contents of the silage fed in weeks 1-8 and weeks 9-24 were 9-5 and 10−6 MJ kg MD−1 and 160 and 191 g kg DM−1 respectively. The straw mix had an ME content of 10−1 MJ kg DM−1 and CP content of 134 g kg DM−1. Partial storage feeding with silage or a straw/concentrate mixture led to a decrease in estimated herbage DM intake. The feeding of the straw/concentrate mixture increased total DM intake, but the estimated total ME intake was similar for treatments G and St. The intakes (kg DM d−1) for treatments G, Si and St were respectively, herbage 11·7,6·8,4·1; total l3·5,13·6,15·0; total ME intake (MJd−1) 163, 155, 163.
Animal performance was, for treatments G, Si and St respectively: milk yield (kg d−1) 19·2, 17·5, 19·1 (s.e.d. 0-87); milk fat content (g kg−1) 36·9, 37·6, 37.1 (s.e.d. 1.22); milk protein content (g kg−1) 35·3, 32·9, 33·4 (s.e.d. 0·76).  相似文献

Four experiments were carried out to evaluate effluent from grass silage as a feed for beef cattle. Castrated male cattle (steers) with mean initial live weights of 380,460 and 400 kg in Experiments 1–3 were offered effluent, in addition to a diet of grass silage given ad libitum and supplemented with cereal-based concentrates. The cattle readily consumed effluent in preference to fresh water, the mean intake over the three experiments being 12·71 per head daily containing 0·77 kg dry matter (DM). Supplementation with effluent did not affect silage DM intake and increased total DM intake by 10%. Digestible energy concentrations of 13·1 and 16·6 MJ kg--1 DM and organic matter, respectively, were determined for effluent in Experiment 4. There were no problems of ill health in any of the 69 cattle which were offered effluent. It is concluded that fresh or well-preserved stored effluent from grass silage is readily consumed by beef cattle, is of high nutritive value and could enable savings to be made in total feed costs.  相似文献

Aftermath grass growth on Palace Leas meadow hay plots at Cockle Park Experimental Farm, Northumberland, is well correlated with hay yield, but there is variation in grazing intensity and dunging pattern between plots leading to a redistribution of nutrients. Plots which are low in nutrients, as a result of treatments applied since 1897, receive inputs from the surrounding plots but these have not prevented the development of large differences in flora, hay yield and soil properties between plots. Variation in grazing intensity between plots may have contributed to an increase in soil organic matter content on some of the more acid plots.  相似文献

The oilseed crop Camelina sativa (camelina) has lower production costs than oilseed rape in some climates. For this reason, the production of biodiesel-grade methyl ester from camelina oil was evaluated. The evaluation included quality assessment of esters produced in laboratory and pilot plant, an examination of methods of improving ester low-temperature properties, and vehicle trials. Laboratory esterifications gave ester yields similar to rape-seed oil. Six 350 kg batches of unrefined camelina oil with acid values from 3 to 6 were esterified in a pilot plant. Ester-specific properties were satisfactory with one exception; the iodine number of 155 far exceeded the value of 120 required by the relevant EU standard. Fuel-specific properties of the camelina methyl esters were largely within specification, though low-temperature behaviour could be a problem in some climates. This problem could be overcome by the use of suitable pour-point depressants or by blending with diesel oil. In vehicle tests, the reduction in fuel economy with camelina ester was similar to that with biodiesel from other feedstocks. The high iodine number of camelina methyl ester did not lead to a more rapid deterioration of the lubricating oil. However, it was concluded that further engine trials would be needed before the use of camelina ester as an undiluted vehicle fuel could be recommended.  相似文献

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is currently seldom used in the high‐rainfall (>600 mm) zone of south‐eastern Australia. To determine its potential to improve forage availability during the summer‐autumn feed‐deficit period, a field plot‐scale experiment with sheep evaluated a Continental cultivar of tall fescue (cv. Quantum) at Hamilton, Victoria, between September 2006 and January 2009. Four grazing treatments represented set stocking or rotational grazing at the two‐, three‐ or four‐leaf stage, in a completely randomized design with three replications. Grazing treatment effects on tall fescue tiller population dynamics, forage accumulation rates and consumption, sward nutritive value and botanical composition were measured. Results showed tall fescue can persist and support year‐round grazing by sheep, subject to water availability for summer growth from summer rain or on moisture retentive heavy soils. During the summer‐autumn (December–April) vegetative phase, grazing at the three‐leaf stage optimized forage consumption, with no difference in feed value or botanical composition between the grazing treatments during these months. During the reproductive phase (September–November), feed value was highest under set stocking and declined with the production of each successive leaf. Grazing at the three‐ or four‐leaf stage prevented winter weed invasion, but winter forage consumption was low in these treatments. Set stocking or grazing at the two‐leaf stage improved winter forage consumption rates, but these swards were invaded by winter growing weeds.  相似文献

Two areas of an early-heading perennial ryegrass cv. Cropper were harvested by either a precision-chop or a flail harvester at around 50% ear emergence (15 May 1978) and 14d later (29 May). Formic acid (85%) was applied at the rate of 2·2 litres t-1. Mature crossbred wethers were used in a 2 × 2 factorial design to determine the effect of stage of maturity and method of harvesting (chop length) on the in vivo digestibilities of formic acid-treated grass in experiment 1 and formic acid silage in experiment 2. Apparent digestibility coefficients were determined at a fixed level of feeding for both grass and silage and at ad libitum access to feed for silage only. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), acid-detergent fibre (ADF) or acid-detergent lignin (ADL) in grass or silages of differing chop lengths but the later cut forages had significantly higher ADF and ADL concentrations and lower CP concentrations than the early-cut forages. The ADF and ADL concentrations were also higher in the silages than in the corresponding grasses. In general, the fermentation characteristics of precision-chopped silage were better than for the corresponding flail-cut silage but date of harvest was a more important determinant of quality and the late, flail-cut silage had the highest butyrate and ammonia N concentrations and the highest pH (411) of any treatment. There was a significantly higher intake of precision-chopped as compared with flail-cut silage with both the early-and the late-cut silage but there were no significant differences attributable to stage of maturity (i.e. date of harvest) or significant interaction between chop length and maturity. The slightly increased intake of early harvested, precision-chopped silage as compared with late precision-chopped silage was not significant. Dry matter digestibility (DMD) of the grass decreased at a rate of 0004 units d-1 post 50% ear emergence. The results of experiment 2 indicated a decrease of 0·207 units d-1 in silage fed at a similar level. The late-cut silage (DMD 0·292, mean of both harvesting treatments) thus had a significantly lower digestibility than the corresponding grass (mean DMD 0·247). Chop length had a variable influence on the DMD of both grass and silage fed at a fixed level but treatment differences were non-significant. However, a trend towards higher digestibility of flail-cut as compared with precision-chopped silage was apparent and this became statistically significant when the animals were allowed ad libitum access to feed. This may be a response to the generally lower intake of flail-cut silage.  相似文献

In one experiment twenty‐four Holstein Friesian cows, average 43 d post‐partum, were used in a changeover design experiment to evaluate the replacement of a cereal‐based concentrate supplement (C) by an ensiled mixture (MGBP) of malt distillers’ grains and molassed sugar beet pellets. The cows were offered grass silage ad libitum [dry matter (DM) content 170 g kg?1, crude protein (CP) concentration 160 g kg DM?1, metabolizable energy (ME) concentration 10·9 MJ kg DM?1] and either C or MGBP at one of three levels (3, 6, 9 kg DM d?1). The composition of C and MGBP were DM content: 853 and 296 g kg?1, CP concentration: 202 and 187 g kg DM?1, ME concentration: 12·6 and 10·8 MJ kg DM?1 respectively. The cows ate all the C supplement but the intakes of MGBP were 2·7, 4·9 and 6·4 kg DM d?1 for the 3, 6 and 9 kg DM d?1 levels of MGBP respectively. Total DM intakes (kg d?1) were 12·5, 15·6, 18·2 for treatments 3‐C, 6‐C and 9‐C and 13·1, 14·4 and 15·9 (s.e., 0·90) for treatments 3‐MGBP, 6‐MGBP and 9‐MGBP respectively. Milk yields (kg d?1) for treatments 3‐C, 6‐C and 9‐C were 19·9, 23·2 and 24·2, respectively, and for treatments 3‐MGBP, 6‐MGBP and 9‐MGBP were, 20·3, 21·3 and 23·0 respectively (s.e., 1·05). Milk fat contents (g kg?1) for treatments 3‐C, 6‐C and 9‐C were 42·8, 42·3, 43·5 respectively and for treatments 3‐MGBP, 6‐MGBP and 9‐MGBP were 39·5, 38·7 and 38·2 (s.e, 1·86), respectively, and milk protein contents (g kg?1) for treatments 3‐C, 6‐C and 9‐C were 30·5, 30·6, 31·8, respectively, and for 3‐MGBP, 6‐MGBP and 9‐MGBP were 30·0, 30·8 and 31·2 (s.e., 0·66) respectively. Milk yield and milk protein contents were significantly higher for the higher levels of supplementary feeding but there was no difference between the types of supplement. The milk fat contents were significantly lower on the MGBP than C supplements. In a second experiment fifteen Holstein Friesian cows, average 126 d post‐partum, were used in a changeover experiment to evaluate the replacement of all (treatment M) or half (treatment MS) of the grass silage (S) in their diet by a mixture of MGBP and straw. All cows received 5·1 kg DM d?1 of concentrate feed. Forage DM intakes were 8·3, 11·2 and 14·2 kg DM d?1 for the S, MS and M treatments respectively. Milk yields (kg d?1) for S, MS and M treatments were 17·0, 19·4 and 20·0 (s.e., 0·56) respectively. Corresponding contents of milk fat and protein (g kg?1) were 42·0, 41·4, 38·6 (s.e., 0·37) and 33·8, 34·1, 34·2 (s.e., 0·42). Ensiled mixtures of malt distillers’ grains and molassed sugar beet pellets can be used to replace some of the conventional concentrates or grass silage for dairy cows giving moderate yields without a loss of production.  相似文献

The compositional characteristics of grape stalk in terms of lignin, sugars, ash, extractives and tannins contents were established. The biomass composition of grape stalk is 34% lignin, 36% cellulose, 24% hemicellulose and 6% tannins. The tannins, analysed by solution 13C NMR, were essentially of procyanidin type and the dichloromethane extractives fraction, characterized by GC-MS, was mainly composed of fatty acids. Different processes for the pretreatment of grape stalk were compared. Due to the high content of lignin and tannins, dilute sulfuric acid and ethanol organosolv pretreatments resulted in a low degree of delignification. However, a wet oxidation process permitted a significant reduction of the Klason lignin content of the pulp with a good carbohydrate recovery and improved enzymatic digestibility.  相似文献

This experiment carried out as a completely randomized design with six treatments and 3 replicates pens of 100 birds each (total of 1800 birds). Treatments were consisted of a common corn-soybean meal based starter and grower diets supplemented by 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 or 2% garlic meal. At 1-21 days of age, daily feed intake per chicks influences by dietary garlic meal level so that the birds fed diets with 0.125 and 0.25% garlic meal had a significantly higher daily feed intake (p < 0.05) than birds fed 0.5% dietary garlic meal. At 22-42 days of age and the whole experimental period (1-42 days of age), garlic meal level didn't affect daily feed intake. No significant difference recorded for daily weight gain of experimentally birds at 1-21 days of age, But at 22-42 days of age and the whole experimentally period (1-42 days of age) the birds fed the control diet (free of garlic meal) and the diet containing the highest garlic meal dosage (2%) had a significantly lower daily weight gain in compare to other birds (p < 0.05). At 1-21 days of age the birds fed diet supplemented with 0.5% garlic meal had a lower feed conversion ratio than the control birds (p < 0.05) but at 22-42 days of age and the whole experimentally period (1-42 days of age) birds fed the control diet and the diet whit 2% garlic meal supplement showed a higher feed conversion ratios in compare with birds fed diets containing 0.125, 0.5 or 1% garlic meal. No significant differences were detected in carcass percentage and interior organs between birds fed experimental diets. The weight gain reduction in birds fed 2% dietary garlic meal means that herbal additives have their limitations too and needs more investigation.  相似文献

Formic acid, sodium diacetate, propionic acid and two of its ammonium salts, ammonium isobutyrate and tributyl phosphate, were examined for their antimicrobial effects with cultures of micro-organisms typical of the microflora of moist hay. The assays, which were conducted at pH 5, 6, 7 and 8, revealed that all potential preservatives discriminated against actinomycetes in particular and were least effective against fungi. In addition, it was apparent that antimicrobial properties were enhanced under slightly acid conditions and for this reason the use of mixtures of organic acids and salts in commercial hay preservatives is justified. Tributyl phosphate not only had the strongest antimicrobial properties of the compounds tested but was also the least affected by pH.  相似文献
