Selective mitochondrial damage by a ruby laser microbeam: an electron microscopic study

A pulsed ruby laser microbeam produces changes in single living cells stained with a low concentration of Janus green B. Electron micrographs show that such alterations are the result of morphological damage sustained by and restricted to the mitochondria in the irradiated area.     

Ultrahigh pressure: beyond 2 megabars and the ruby fluorescence scale

A new design of the diamond-window, high-pressure cell has permitted static pressure of 2.8 megabars to be generated for the first time. The design is unusually stable mechanically, and thus it should be possible to use the new cell to study most materials, including hydrogen, in the unexplored pressure region above 1 megabar.     

High-pressure ruby and diamond fluorescence: observations at 0.21 to 0.55 terapascal

A diamond-anvil, high-pressure apparatus was used to extend the upper pressure limit of static laboratory experiments. Shifts of the R(1) strong fluorescent line of ruby were observed that correspond to static pressures of 0.21 to 0.55 terapascal (2.1 to 5.5 megabars) at 25 degrees C. Sensitive spectroscopic techniques in the pressure range 0.15 to 0.28 terapascal were used to observe ruby and diamond fluorescence separately; these two fluorescent emissions overlap strongly at high pressures. At pressures greater than approximately 0.28 terapascal, the diamond fluorescence diminished and the ruby fluorescence reappeared strongly. Pressure was determined by extrapolation of the calibrated shift of the ruby R(1) line.

Origin of the sudbury complex by meteoritic impact: neodymium isotopic evidence

Samarium-neodymium isotopic data on whole rocks and minerals of the Sudbury Complex in Canada gave an igneous crystallization age of 1840 +/- 21 x 10(6) years. The initial epsilon neodymium values for 15 whole rocks are similar to those for average upper continental crust, falling on the crustal trend of neodymium isotopic evolution as defined by shales. The rare earth element concentration patterns of Sudbury rocks are also similar to upper crustal averages. These data suggest that the Sudbury Complex formed from melts generated in the upper crust and are consistent with a meteoritic impact.     

Retina: ultrastructural alterations produced by extremely low levels of coherent radiation

The effect of low levels of coherent radiation on the eye is not fully established, but is generally presumed to be noninjurious. Irradiation of the retina with a Q-switched ruby laser emitting low amounts of energy (0.1 percent probability of creating damage) consistently produces ultrastructural alterations in rods and cones. Outer segments of these cells are broken and disorganized and their lamellae are in disarray 1 day after such irradiation.

【目的】研究红宝石无核×红旗特早葡萄杂交后代核性状遗传规律。【方法】以红宝石无核×红旗特早杂交群体135个F₁代植株为试材,鉴定核状态,测定果实单粒重、单核重、单粒核数量、单核纵横径积等核相关指标,分析群体核性状遗传倾向。【结果】红宝石无核×红旗特早杂交群体胚败育率为59.26%;果实单粒重表现为连续分布,遗传力低,呈现变小趋势;果实单核重在有核和无核单株群体之间存在两极分化,但没有明显界限,遗传力低,呈现变小趋势;果实单粒核数量遗传力低,呈现变少趋势,整个组合91.85%的单株具有败育残核;单核纵横径积在有核和无核单株群体之间存在两极分化,且有明显界限,遗传力低,呈现变小趋势,但在有核单株中表现增大趋势。【结论】红宝石无核与具有无核倾向的有核品种红旗特早杂交,可以获得较高比例的无核后代,群体在果粒质量、核质量、数量及纵横径积等指标上均表现为退化趋势,但在无核单株与有核单株群体之间存在一定差异,果粒质量、核质量、数量及纵横径积与核性状正相关联。     

Sources of continental crust: neodymium isotope evidence from the sierra nevada and peninsular ranges

Granitic rocks from batholiths of the Sierra Nevada and Peninsular Ranges exhibit initial (143)Nd/(144)Nd ratios that vary over a large range and correlate with (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratios. The data suggest that the batholiths represent mixtures of materials derived from (i) chemically depleted mantle identical to the source of island arcs and (ii) old continental crust, probably sediments or metasediments with a provenance age of approximately 1.6 x 10(9) years. These conclusions are consistent with a model for continental growth whereby new crustal additions are repeatedly extracted from the same limited volume of the upper mantle, which has consequently become depleted in elements that are enriched in the crust. There is little evidence that hydrothermally altered, subducted oceanic crust is a primary source of the magmas.     

Solar nebula heterogeneity in p-process samarium and neodymium isotopes

Bulk carbonaceous chondrites display a deficit of approximately 100 parts per million (ppm) in 144Sm with respect to other meteorites and terrestrial standards, leading to a decrease in their 142Nd/144Nd ratios by approximately 11 ppm. The data require that samarium and neodymium isotopes produced by the p process associated with photodisintegration reactions in supernovae were heterogeneously distributed in the solar nebula. Other samarium and neodymium isotopes produced by rapid neutron capture (r process) in supernovae and by slow neutron capture (s process) in red giants were homogeneously distributed. The supernovae sources supplying the p- and r-process nuclides to the solar nebula were thus disconnected or only weakly connected.     

Pressure measurement made by the utilization of ruby sharp-line luminescence

A rapid, convenient technique for precision pressure measurement in the diamond-anvil high-pressure cell, which makes use of the sharp-line (R-line) luminescence of ruby, has been developed. The observed shift is -0.77 +/-0.03 reciprocal centimeters per kilobar for R(1) and -0.84+/- 0.03 reciprocal centimeters per kilobar for R(2) to lower energy and is approximately linear in the range studied (to 22 kilobars). Line-broadening has been observed in some instances and has been tentatively identified with nonhydrostatic conditions surrounding the ruby sample.     

High-pressure physics: the 1-megabar mark on the ruby r1 static pressure scale

Ruby crystals were subjected to a static pressure greater than 1 megabar in a diamond-windowed pressure cell. The pressure was monitored continuously by observing the spectral shift of the sharp fluorescent R(1) ruby line excited with a cadmium-helium gas-diffusion laser beam. One megabar appears to be the highest pressure ever reported for a static experiment in which an internal calibration was employed.

根据2005年10月至2006年1月在印度洋公海撒雅德玛哈浅滩(Saya de Malha Bank)进行底层渔业资源调查期间,随机采集的208尾丝尾红钻鱼Etelis coruscans(叉长383~866 mm)样本,进行了耳石质量(WO)及其耳石长(长轴,OTL)、耳石宽(短轴,OW)、背长(ODL)、背高(DH)、背喙长(DRL)和腹喙长(VRL)等形态指标参数的测定,初步研究了该种群耳石形态指标的生长特征。结果表明:丝尾红钻鱼左右矢耳石的长度和质量均无显著性差异或一致性偏差(P0.05),耳石呈缺刻卵圆形,凸面有沟裂,凹面核心区表面平坦;背部和腹部边缘有不规则的齿轮缺刻;腹喙比背喙长且粗壮;耳石长轴(OTL)为9.85~20.76 mm,短轴(OW)为5.03~10.88 mm;叉长540 mm时,耳石形态长度指标(OTL、ODL、VRL)相对尺寸变化较大,而宽度指标(OW、DH)相对尺寸变化较小;叉长540 mm时,耳石形态长度指标(OTL、ODL)相对尺寸变化趋势不稳定,而宽度指标相对尺寸变化趋势平缓;整个生长过程中,耳石短轴生长比其长轴生长稳定,短轴与耳石质量的回归关系最高,并且与鱼体叉长的关系基本符合正相关关系。因此,丝尾红钻鱼的耳石短轴更适合用于耳石形态生长与耳石质量及鱼体生长关系的研究。

兽医病理学的发展同整个医学的发展密切相关。本文回顾了医学病理学的发展进程,着重叙述了我国近代兽医病理学的发展,特别是改革开放以来,我国兽医病理学事业的进步历程。

Mechanisms of magma generation beneath hawaii and mid-ocean ridges: uranium/thorium and samarium/neodymium isotopic evidence

Measurements of uranium/thorium and samarium/neodymium isotopes and concentrations in a suite of Hawaiian basalts show that uranium/thorium fractionation varies systematically with samarium/neodymium fractionation and major-element composition; these correlations can be understood in terms of simple batch melting models with a garnet-bearing peridotite magma source and melt fractions of 0.25 to 6.5 percent. Midocean ridge basalts shows a systematic but much different relation between uranium/thorium fractionation and samarium/neodymium fractionation, which, although broadly consistent with melting of a garnet-bearing peridotite source, requires a more complex melting model.     

Isotopic composition of neodymium in waters from the drake passage

The isotopic composition of neodymium has been determined in seawaters from the Drake Passage. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which controls interocean mixing, flows through this passage. The parameter epsilon(Nd)(0) which is a function of the ratio of neodymium-143 to neodymium-144, is found to be uniform with depth at two stations with a value which is intermediate between the values for the Atlantic and the Pacific and indicates that the Antarctic Circumpolar current consists of about 70 percent Atlantic water. Cold bottom water from a site in the south central Pacific has the neodymium isotopic signature of the waters in the Drake Passage. By using a box model to describe the exchange of water between the Southern Ocean and the ocean basins to the north together with the isotopic results, an upper limit of approximately 33 million cubic meters per second is calculated for the rate of exchange between the Pacific and the Southern Ocean. Concentrations of samarium and neodymium were also determined and found to increase approximately linearly with depth. These results suggest that neodymium may be a valuable tracer in oceanography and may be useful in paleo-oceanographic studies.
