Bison,a new red-skinned potato variety

Bison, a new red potato, was introduced by North Dakota State University. This new red variety has smooth tuber type and bright red skin color. Bison yields somewhat less than Norland and Red Pontiac but the advantage of Bison over these two varieties is its uniformity and bright red color. Bison is about medium in total solids and makes chips comparable in color to Norchip but lighter in color than Kennebec. Bison is resistant to race 0 of the late blight organismPhytophthora infestans, but susceptible to race 1–4.     

Solanum burtonii,a new wild potato species from Ecuador

Before 1960 knowledge of the wild potato species from Ecuador was very limited. We knew only three tuber bearing species:Solanum paucijugum Bitt.,S. pichinchense Bitt. et Sodiro andS. solisii Hawkes. However, during the last two decades information has increased greatly with the researches of Donovan S. Correll and the writer. So, to the aforementioned species we must addS. albornozii, S. cyanophyllum, S. regularifolium, S. suffrutescens andS. minutifoliolum found by Correll;S. calacalinum, S. correlli andS. tundalomense discovered by me. With this opportunity, I present another new wild potato species from Ecuador,Solarium burtonii, named in honor of Prof. Dr. W. Glynn Burton as a recognition to his outstanding contributions in the field of potato physiology.

A multipurpose wetting agent,WEX, and a cultured biological product,Agrispon, leave potato yields unchanged

Neither WEX, a multipurpose wetting agent, nor Agrispon, a cultured biological product, influenced potato foliage or tuber yields or tuber specific gravity. The beneficial effects of N application to potatoes grown on Knik silt loam were also demonstrated.     

Ac belmont: a new early-maturing potato cultivar with short dormancy

AC Belmont is adapted as a second early cultivar in Eastern Canada. It has a short dormancy. The white-skinned round oval tubers size and bulk early, but more similar to Superior than to Jemseg. The specific gravity of AC Belmont is lower than Superior. When boiled, the tubers of AC Belmont have a good, somewhat moist texture; when baked the texture of AC Belmont is relatively dry. AC Belmont is highly resistant toVerticillium albo-atrum, moderately resistant to PVY,Fusarium coeruleum, F. sambucinum f.6. andRhizoctonia solani.     

Norchief,a new smooth type,high total solids,red-skinned potato variety

Norchief is a medium late maturing, red variety with high total solids. In yield, the new variety is quite comparable to Red Pontiac and La Rouge but higher than Norland. Norchief has shown a certain degree of field tolerance to potato flea beetle,Epitrix cucumeris.
