1. Photorefractoriness was assessed in two lines of broiler breeders. In one trial, male-line and female-line pullets were reared on the floor and transferred to individual cages at 15 weeks. Birds were either maintained on 8-, 11- or 16-h photoperiods or transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 67 or 124 d. In the second trial, female-line pullets were concurrently housed in the same rearing facilities as trial 1 and transferred to adult floor-pens at 12 weeks. These birds were either maintained on 11- or 16-h photoperiods or transferred from 8- to 11-h or from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 140 d. 2. In the cages, male-line and female-line birds responded similarly to the lighting treatments, but with the male-line maturing 1 to 2 weeks later than the female-line in each case. Birds on constant 11-h photoperiods matured 3 to 8 d earlier than constant 8-h birds, but 3 weeks earlier than constant 16-h birds. Birds photostimulated at 67 d matured at a similar time to constant 16-h birds, but almost 7 weeks later than those transferred from 8 to 16 h at 124 d. In the floor facilities, constant 11-h birds matured 3 weeks earlier than constant 16-h birds, but almost 2 weeks later than either of the photostimulated groups. Birds transferred from 8 to 16 h matured 4d earlier than those transferred from 8 to 11 h. 3. Caged birds maintained on 16 h or transferred from 8 to 16 h at 67 d laid at least 24 fewer eggs, and had more hens not laying at 58 weeks, than birds maintained on 11-h days or those transferred from 8 to 16 h at 124 d. In the floor-pens, constant 11-h and both photostimulated groups produced about 20 more eggs to 56 weeks of age than the constant 16-h controls. 4. Collectively, these findings indicate that conventionally managed broiler breeders exhibit photorefractoriness. Additionally, a combination of photorefractoriness and controlled feeding appears to prevent broiler breeders from being photoresponsive until at least 10 weeks of age, and to cause some individuals still to be photoperiodically non-responsive at 18 weeks. 相似文献

Female chicks from 6 pure lines of broiler breeders were obtained from international broiler breeder companies. The lines were from three female and two male lines and a relaxed selection line derived from one of the male lines (M2) and maintained without selection for 25 years (generations). Replicate groups from each line were reared in floor pens and fed ad libitum. An additional group of the M2 male line was feed restricted and housed in similar pens. Twenty birds from each group were photostimulated after housing them in individual cages at 14 weeks of age. Ovarian follicular dynamics and follicular sensitivity were determined after the onset of lay. Female lines had a greater proportion of atretic follicles and more groups of multiple follicles than male lines. Body weights, fatness and age at puberty were similar in male and female lines. The relaxed selection line had more abdominal fat than any of the selected lines and the ovary contained a similar number of normal yellow follicles as the selected male line. Feed restriction decreased body weight, the numbers of yellow follicles, multiple yellow follicles and the proportion of atretic yellow follicles, and increased the age at onset of lay. The response of ovarian follicles of three different sizes to exogenous gonadotrophin stimulation with PMSG was similar in small yellow follicles, 5 to 6 and 2 to 3 mm white follicles in a female line, a male line and its relaxed line fed ad libitum. The results suggest that the original lines from which modern male-line broiler stocks are derived had a relatively large number of yellow follicles and a high propensity for multiple ovulation at the onset of lay. Separate selection for different traits in male and female lines has not had a dramatic effect on ovarian function or sensitivity to gonadotrophin stimulation. 相似文献

Influenza was detected in a flock of broiler breeders during routine serological monitoring. Although there were no clinical signs, egg production may have been affected in hens on one story of a two-story breeder house. Intensive measures were taken to avoid transmission to other farms. Two months after the flock was found to be serologically positive, sentinel hens were placed in the flock, and they became serologically positive 1 month later. In spite of this evidence for virus being present in the flock, no detectable transmission to any other farm occurred. 相似文献

1. Broiler parent stock (Marshall) were supplied with energy and protein from diets in amounts defined as percentages of an allowance such that nutrient intake increased or decreased in three consecutive periods from 23 to 63 weeks of age. 2. A 20% reduction in energy allowance from 23 to 34 weeks was associated with reduced body‐weight gain, egg weight and carcass constituents except ash, but had no significant effect on egg production or hatchability. 3. Increases in nutrient intake after 34 weeks were associated with an increase in body‐weight gain and carcass fat. 4. Moderate decreases in energy intake after 34 weeks were associated with reduced body‐weight gain, and a 15% reduction in nutrient intake resulted in a decrease in body weight and egg weight. 5. It is suggested that a feeding allowance which controls body‐weight gain during early lay, and then allows for a gradual increase in body weight over the breeding period may be the most efficient way of feeding the broiler breeder hen. 相似文献

1. Broiler breeders were reared at an initial illuminance of 13, 21 or 44 lux and transferred at 20 weeks and a mean body weight of 2.06 kg to floor pens at 25, 55 or 71 lux, or to individual cages at various intensities between 3 and 138 lux. 2. Rate of sexual maturation was not significantly affected by the light intensity experienced during the rearing period, but was progressively accelerated by the provision of a brighter illuminance after 20 weeks, up to a ceiling of about 14 lux. There was no interaction between the pre- and post-20-week illuminance. 3. Cumulative egg numbers to 39 weeks were unaffected by illuminance in the rearing period, positively correlated with illuminance post 20 weeks up to an asymptote at about 8 lux, and highly correlated with age at sexual maturity. Peak rate of lay was both delayed and depressed at 3 lux. 4. It is concluded that the minimum light intensity required at bird-head height to achieve satisfactory photostimulation and an optimal peak rate of lay in broiler breeders is 10 lux, but that a higher illuminance would be prudent for broiler breeders kept in floor pen facilities to maximise nest-box usage. 相似文献

A physiological investigation on an outbreak of diuresis syndrome in commercial broiler breeder hens was carried out. Daily water consumption increased 4-fold and daily manure wet weight increased two-fold in affected hens. 2. The syndrome did not have a genetic basis. It was associated with kidney dysfunction which, once acquired, was not alleviated by changing the diet, the drinking water, or the environment. Diuresis ceased when water intake was restricted and returned when water was again made freely available. 3. The syndrome was not caused by nephrogenic diabetes insipidus or diabetes mellitus. Key changes in kidney function associated with diuresis included: increased urine flow, decreased urine osmolality, reduced glomerular filtration rates, increased fraction of the glomerular filtration rate excreted as urine and decreased urinary hydrogen ion concentrations. 4. Preliminary histopathological findings and the physiological patterns of kidney dysfunction indicated that the diuresis syndrome was associated with permanent kidney damage, probably caused by the Arkansas strain of infectious bronchitis virus. 相似文献

A new disease in broiler breeders known in Australia as Big Liver and Spleen Disease (BLS) is described from field observations, retrospective record analysis, and detailed study of a selected flock. BLS has a predilection for adult birds. It is characterized clinically by a sudden drop in egg production, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and increased mortality and histologically by a period of lymphoproliferation followed by a period of lymphoid destruction that coincides with the clinical signs. Epidemiology suggests an infectious cause, though initial attempts at isolation of a causative agent have been unsuccessful, and it is serologically distinct from the common avian viral and mycoplasma diseases. 相似文献

Two experiments using commercial broiler‐type breeders and one experiment using commercial egg production‐type breeders were conducted to determine the effect of male to female ratios on fertility and hatchability. Breeding pens were made up with 36 females and 4, 3, 2 or 1 male(s) per pen giving ratios of one male to 9, 12, 18 and 36 females. Five replicate pens were used per treatment. Within the ratios and genetic strains used, maximum fertility was obtained with male to female ratios of 1 to 12 with broiler‐type breeders and 1 to 18 with egg production‐type breeders. It is concluded that using fewer females per male than in these ratios would be unwarranted and in some cases more females per male would be feasible. 1. Broiler breeders were reared in light-proof accommodation on 8-h photoperiods at an illuminance of 10 (W10), 40 (W40) or 100 lux (W100) from warm-white fluorescent lamps, or 10 lux (UV10) from Arcadia bird lamps (white light plus UV-A emission). At 20 weeks, 200 birds from each group were transferred to open-sided housing and a 16-h mixture of natural and warm-white fluorescent light. 2. Mortality during rearing and body weight at 20 weeks were similar for all groups. 3. The W10 birds matured 2 d later, had inferior rates of lay over peak production and laid 9 fewer eggs to 60 weeks than the other groups. Mean egg weight, extra large egg production and mortality between 20 and 60 weeks were unaffected by lighting during the rearing period. The UV10 birds had a significantly better rate of lay between 52 and 60 weeks than any of the groups reared on white light. 4. The findings suggest that ultraviolet radiation does not directly affect hypothalamic activity, but that retinally received UV during the rearing period prolongs the laying cycle through a modification of the hormonal control of photorefractoriness. 相似文献

Somatotrophic and thyroid hormones were determined around the onset of reproduction in broiler breeders reared in two different housing systems [dark, close-sided house (CH) and conventional, open-sided house (OH)]. In both groups age-related changes were obvious for thyroxine (T4), growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1); levels of T4 decreased, especially between 24 and 28 weeks in both groups; concomitantly GH sharply increased over the same period. A transient peak in triiodothyronine (T3) occurred between 25 and 27 weeks. The effect of housing was only present after the onset of lay. Between weeks 27-28 and the end of the period studied, the CH group showed higher levels of GH and T3 but lower T4 levels as compared to the OH group. A significant increase in GH after onset of lay, without any significant rise in T3 or in IGF-I, could point to a relative insensitivity to high plasma GH levels. Changes at GH receptor level, together with an increased pituitary GH secretion and/or decreased GH turnover may be expected. This may indicate that hypothalamo-pituitary changes at the onset of lay not only imply changes of gonadotrophic cell function, but also other hormonal axes. The relatively decrease in T4 without changes in T3, may point to a decrease in the activity of the thyrotropic axis. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of broiler breeder egg weight on egg quality, chick quality, and broiler performance using Hubbard Classic broiler breeder flock. Hatching eggs from a commercial broiler breeder flock (Hubbard classic strain) were obtained at the age of 60 wk and divided into 3 egg-weight categories, namely small, medium, and large. For this purpose, 930 eggs having weights 63.09 ± 0.21, 68.85 ± 0.23, and 74.81 ± 0.11g were divided into 3 egg categories labeled small, medium, and large respectively. We further divided these eggs into 2 categories, eggs for quality parameters and eggs for incubation and posthatch performance parameters. Eggs from the small egg category had greater proportion of the shell weight and more shell strength. Egg weight did not significantly affect the albumen and yolk weight percentage. Egg weight affected the shape index and specific gravity for which lower values were observed for large eggs. Egg weight positively affected the chick weight, chick yield, and chick length ( P < 0.05) of both male and female chicks. Results of the body weight gain showed that effect of egg weight on the posthatch performance of chick diminishes with the age of broilers. Egg weight significantly affected the body weight gain of male and female chicks up to 3 wk of age. Egg weights did not significantly affect the feed intake and mortality of broiler. Different egg-weight categories significantly affected the feed conversion ratio of female chicks at wk 2 and 3 of age and did not affect the feed conversion of male and female chicks at the end of wk 5. In conclusion, egg weight positively affected the chick characteristics (e.g., chick weight, chick length) and did not affect the final live body weight, feed conversion ratio, feed intake, and mortality in broilers. 相似文献

1. Broiler breeder females were reared on one of three growth curves (ad libitum, conventional or modified restriction) and given rations containing a high or low concentration of crude protein. After the peak rate of lay they were fed ad libitum or a decreasing quantity of food in response to declining egg production. The welfare of the birds was assessed by determining the changes in indices of welfare at 36, 48 and 60 weeks of age. 2. Body weight increased rapidly in restricted birds fed ad libitum post-peak and water intake declined. 3. Post-peak food restriction was associated with a decrease in resting and increased drinking and spot-pecking activities. Birds that were food restricted during rearing spent more time foraging and spot-pecking at 36 and 48 but not 60 weeks of age. 4. Immune function increased with age but was not affected by the experimental treatments. The heterophil-lymphocyte ratio in birds fed ad libitum during rearing was numerically lower at 36 and higher at 48 and 60 weeks of age compared with restricted birds. 5. There was no effect of treatment on plasma corticosterone concentration. Creatine kinase activity was high at 60 weeks in treatments that were characterised by poor reproductive status and the activities of other enzymes reflected differences in reproductive status and mortality. 6. There was no long-term welfare or production advantage from feeding low protein rations or more generous feeding during the rearing period compared with conventional food restriction programmes. 相似文献

1. A 3x2x2 factorial experiment was conducted with boiler breeder females to determine the effects of body weight gain (three levels) and conventional or lower crude protein concentrations in the rations during rearing, and restricted or ad libitum feeding after the peak rate of lay on egg production, fertility, hatchability, mortality and food consumption. 2. Compared with ad libitum feeding, conventional food restriction resulted in a decrease in average daily food consumption of 0.6 during rearing, 0.2 during early lay and an increase of 0.4 after the peak rate of egg production. Mortality was decreased by more than half. 3. Restricted birds had higher total and settable egg production, fewer defective or damaged eggshells and higher fertility and hatchability than those fed ad libitum. The modified (more generous) rearing programme resulted in lower rates of egg production and higher rates of mortality compared with the conventional food restriction programme. 4. Low-protein rearing rations were associated with higher rates of food intake, higher mortalities and lower rates of egg production than the conventional protein rations. There were no differences in the fertility or hatchability of eggs between birds fed on the two concentrations of dietary crude protein. 5. Ad libitum feeding post-peak was associated with higher rates of mortality to 60 weeks of age. Post-peak feeding had little effect on the rate of lay or egg weight in conventionally restricted birds fed high protein rations or in birds fed ad libitum. Restricted feeding post-peak decreased the rate of lay and egg weight in birds on the modified restriction programme and in conventionally restricted birds fed on the low protein rations. There was no effect of post-peak feeding on fertility or hatchability of eggs. 6. The total numbers of saleable chicks per kg food consumed were 1.83, 1.72 and 0.52 for conventional, modified and ad libitum feeding during rearing; 1.56 and 1.15 for restricted and ad libitum feeding post-peak: there were no differences associated with protein concentrations of rations fed during rearing. 相似文献

The economic impact of management practices designed to limit the introduction of disease into a parent broiler breeder flock (biosecurity) was evaluated using benefit-cost analysis. Equations were developed to quantify the losses resulting from infection with one of four alternative categories of disease representing incremental levels of pathogenicity. Realistic costs and assumed values relating to the probability of infection were used to evaluate the ameliorative effect of three alternative levels of biosecurity. A microcomputer spreadsheet program was used to confirm that expenditure on protective measures can be justified by both the risk of introducing a disease and the magnitude of losses that may occur following infection. 相似文献

1. Oviposition times were recorded for broiler breeder hens under 8-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14- and 16-h photoperiods. 2. Mean oviposition time (MOT) was delayed relative to dawn by approximately 0.5 h for each 1-h increase in photoperiod up to 14 h, but was similar for 14- and 16-h photoperiods. However, the 0.5 h/h regression for the time when half the eggs were laid continued through to 16 h. 3. Serum samples were collected from broiler breeders and their 1-day-old, 2-week-old, and 5-week-old progeny from different regions of the United States. Individual samples were tested by hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) against six infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strains: Massachusetts 41 (Mass), H52, Connecticut 46 (Conn), Arkansas 99, SE17, and JMK. The use of multiple strains to test broiler flocks resulted in the detection of seroconversions to Conn and JMK vaccination that were not detected with the IBV Mass HI test. Further, HI titers were detected to IBV strains not used for flock vaccination. In some cases, those titers could be due to cross reactions to antigens common to each of the virus strains. In two breeder flocks, the highest HI titers were to heterologous strains. 相似文献
