Io: an intense brightening near 5 micrometers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Spectrophotometric observations of the jovian satellite Io on 20 and 21 February 1978 (Universal Time) were made from 1.2 to 5.4 micrometers. Io's brightness at 4.7 to 5.4 micrometers was found to be three to five times greater at an orbital phase angle of 68 degrees than at orbital phase angles of 23 degrees (5.5 hours before the brightening) and 240 degrees (20 hours after the brightening). Since the 5-micrometer albedo of Io is near unity under ordinary conditions, the observed transient phenomenon must have been the result of an emission mechanism. Although several such mechanisms were examined, the actual choice is not clear.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental support is presented for the hypothesis that many organic compounds may form under conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium. This possibility must be considered along with special effects of selective catalysts, radiation, and degradation from biological matter, in explaining the origin of organic compounds in carbonaceous chondrites. Similar considerations may apply to solar nebulas and planetary atmospheres. The equilibrium distribution of organic compounds at temperatures between 300 degrees K and 1000 degrees K and pressures of 10-(6) to 50 atm for the C-H-O system have been computed. At moderate temperatures and low pressures, conditions where graphite production is inhibited, aromatic compounds may form even in the presence of large excesses of hydrogen. Such conditions exist in the solar nebula and in the atmospheres of some of the major planets. Equilibrium concentrations of a large number of compounds at 1000 degrees K with nitrogen, sulfur, and chlorine added to the system have also been determined. In some cases, a limited equilibrium method is employed in which those few compounds which form with the most difficulty are excluded from the computations, while representatives of all other families of compounds are included. This approach is shown to be useful in the interpretation of certain experimental data in which complete equilibrium has not been attained. We have also found that gases, activated to the plasma state by a high-energy radio frequency field, recombine on cooling to yield product mixtures which are in qualitative agreement with those predicted by the equilibrium computations. We believe that such products can be profitably studied as if at a metastable limited equilibrium.  相似文献

Optomotor responses to moving stripes have been elicited from nine species of Microchiroptera. The minimum separable visual angle of two phyllostomids, under the experimental conditions, probably lies between 3.0 and 0.7 degrees; that of Myotis lucifugus, between 6.0 and 3.0 degrees. Four species indicate an ability to resolve stripes subtending 0.7 degree, the narrowest tested.  相似文献

Water vapor that condenses on a metal surface at 10 degrees K forms a noncrystalline phase of estimated density 1.2 grams per cubic centimeter. X-ray diffraction data of high precision and resolution have been analyzed to yield oxygen atom pair correlation functions. The positional correlation in amorphous solid water extends over only a few molecular radii, and the radial distribution of nearneighbor oxygen atoms in amorphous solid water is qualitatively different from that found in the low-pressure ice modifications. Amorphous solid water is a useful material for liquid water models because it can be studied under conditions such that the effects of static disorder and thermal excitation can be separated.  相似文献

A bacterium, a spirillum, has been isolated from a deep-sea sample and has been found to grow optimally at about 500 bars and 2 degrees to 4 degrees C. These conditions are similar to those prevailing at the 5700-meter depth from which the sample was collected. The organism grows at these pressures and temperatures with a generation time of between 4 and 13 hours; at atmospheric pressure and 2 degrees to 4 degrees C, the generation time is about 3 to 4 days.  相似文献

The metastable kyaniteandalusite equilibrium in the Al(2)SiO(5) system has been reversed at 700 degrees , 750 degrees , and 800 degrees C at elevated water pressures, with a variety of natural and synthetic kyanites and andalusites as starting materials. Sillimanite, the stable form of Al(2)SiO(5) under these conditions, did not appear. The value of the transition pressure at 750 degrees C is 6.6 +/- 0.4 kilobars, several kilobars below pressures given by several convergent previous determinations. The Al(2)SiO(5) pressure-temperature triple point now indicated lies far from the points found by others. The revised aluminum silicate phase diagram indicates that many rocks crystallized at lower pressures than formerly thought possible.  相似文献

Water environments with temperatures up to and above boiling are commonly found in association with geothermal activity. At temperatures above 60 degrees C, only bacteria are found. Bacteria with temperature optima over the range 65 degrees to 105 degrees C have been obtained in pure culture and are the object of many research projects. The upper temperature limit for life in liquid water has not yet been defined, but is likely to be somewhere between 110 degrees and 200 degrees C, since amino acids and nucleotides are destroyed at temperatures over 200 degrees C. Because bacteria capable of growth at high temperatures are found in many phylogenetic groups, it is likely that the ability to grow at high temperature had a polyphyletic origin. The macromolecules of these organisms are inherently more stable to heat than those of conventional organisms, but only small changes in sequence can lead to increases in thermostability. Because of their unique properties, thermophilic organisms and their enzymes have many potential biotechnological uses, and extensive research on industrial applications is under way.  相似文献

To investigate the mechanisms by which heat affects cancer cells, we used 5-thio-D-glucose, an inhibitor of glycolysis in HeLa S-3 cells, under aerobic and hypoxic conditions at temperatures ranging from 37 degrees to 43 degrees C. Drug alone or heat alone killed a minimum number of cells under aerobic or hypoxic conditions. Exposure to drug and hyperthermia selectively increased the number of cells killed under hypoxic conditions at temperatures as low as 40.5 degrees C but had little effect on cells incubated under aerobic conditions. These results suggest that the glycolytic pathways is a primary site of hyperthermic damage leading to cell death.  相似文献

A thermally stable 3 x 3 octahedral molecular sieve corresponding to natural todorokite (OMS-1) has been synthesized by autoclaving layer-structure manganese oxides, which are prepared by reactions of MnO(4)(-) and Mn(2+) under markedly alkaline conditions. The nature and thermal stability of products depend strongly on preparation parameters, such as the MnO(4)(-)/Mn(2+) ratio, pH, aging, and autoclave conditions. The purest and the most thermally stable todorokite is obtained at a ratio of 0.30 to 0.40. Autoclave treatments at about 150 degrees to 180 degrees C for more than 2 days yield OMS-1, which is as thermally stable (500 degrees C) as natural todorokite minerals. Adsorption data give a tunnel size of 6.9 angstroms and an increase of cyclohexane or carbon tetrachloride uptake with dehydration temperature up to 500 degrees C. At 600 degrees C, the tunnel structure collapses. Both Lewis and Br?nsted acid sites have been observed in OMS-1. Particular applications of these materials include adsorption, electrochemical sensors, and oxidation catalysis.  相似文献

An innovative ultrasensitive technique was used for lead isotopic analysis of individual zircons extracted from granite core samples at depths of 960, 2170, 2900, 3930, and 4310 meters. The results show that lead, a relatively mobile element compared to the nuclear waste-related actinides uranium and thorium, has been highly retained at elevated temperatures (105 degrees to 313 degrees C) under conditions relevant to the burial of synthetic rock waste containers in deep granite holes.  相似文献

以仅见于黄土高原半干旱区局部地段的黄土藻类群落为对象,分别从植被类型、坡向、坡度、地貌部位、干扰程度等方面对其分布规律进行系统地研究。通过调查,测定了藻类结皮在不同立地条件下的结皮厚度、植被分布、结皮盖度等指标。结果表明:①不同植被类型对藻类结皮盖度和厚度的影响呈现出不同的规律性。植被类型不同,藻类结皮盖度不同,荒坡>樟子松林>油松林。但结皮厚度表现出相反的特点,即油松林>樟子松林>荒坡地。②坡向对藻类结皮分布有明显影响。阴坡藻类结皮盖度和厚度均大于阳坡。③坡度对藻类结皮分布的影响是在多种因素的共同作用下形成的,不同坡度对藻类结皮盖度的影响差异不显著;但影响结皮厚度,即平缓坡>缓坡>陡坡>极陡坡。④地貌部位对藻类结皮分布有明显影响,在林地里,结皮盖度表现为坡上部>坡中部>坡下部。结皮厚度无显著差异。⑤干扰程度对藻类结皮分布具有明显影响,干扰程度弱,藻类结皮盖度和厚度均大,反之则小。  相似文献

An apparatus for the study of the "spontaneous" heat production in stored organic materials has been described. Experiments with commercial cornmeal and cracked yellow field corn have shown that temperatures above 60 degrees C. can readily be produced under suitable conditions of moisture content, oxygen supply and insulation, and that marked heating does not take place in the absence of oxygen. "Spontaneous" heat production is the result of oxidative reactions and will not take place to any marked extent in the absence of air or oxygen. Stored organic materials will not heat if retained under anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

The thermal and pH stability of selected flavonoids has been determined under simulated geologic conditions. Thermolytic rates and products for various regimes, as determined by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, indicate the potential usefulness of flavonoids as thermometric indicators in sediments. The parametric factors affecting flavonoid stability are used to geochemically characterize angiosperm "green leaves" (36 to 25 x 10(6) years old) from Succor Creek and indicate that these sediments have not experienced temperatures higher than 80 degrees C or extreme pH shifts (beyond the range 6.3 to 7.2) during postdepositional maturation.  相似文献

Evidence for a new polymorphic form of carbon, similar to but distinct from chaoite, has been discovered. It is trigonal, with a(0) = 5.33 angstroms and c(0) = 12.24 angstroms. It is produced along with chaoite on the surfaces of graphitic carbons under free-vaporization conditions at low pressures, with temperatures above approximately 2550 degrees K.  相似文献

Aeolian features on Triton that were imaged during the Voyager Mission have been grouped. The term "aeolian feature" is broadly defined as features produced by or blown by the wind, including surface and airborne materials. Observations of the latitudinal distributions of the features probably associated with current activity (known plumes, crescent streaks, fixed terminator clouds, and limb haze with overshoot) all occur from latitude -37 degrees to latitude -62 degrees . Likely indicators of previous activity (dark surface streaks) occur from latitude -5 degrees to -70 degrees , but are most abundant from -15 degrees to -45 degrees , generally north of currently active features. Those indicators which give information on wind direction and speed have been measured. Wind direction is a function of altitude. The predominant direction of the surface wind streaks is found to be between 40 degrees and 80 degrees measured clockwise from north. The average orientation of streaks in the northeast quadrant is 59 degrees . Winds at 1- to 3- kilometer altitude are eastward, while those at &8 kilometers blow west.  相似文献

Two ice cores from the col of Huascarán in the north-central Andes of Peru contain a paleoclimatic history extending well into the Wisconsinan (Würm) Glacial Stage and include evidence of the Younger Dryas cool phase. Glacial stage conditions at high elevations in the tropics appear to have been as much as 8 degrees to 12 degrees C cooler than today, the atmosphere contained about 200 times as much dust, and the Amazon Basin forest cover may have been much less extensive. Differences in both the oxygen isotope ratio zeta(18)O (8 per mil) and the deuterium excess (4.5 per mil) from the Late Glacial Stage to the Holocene are comparable with polar ice core records. These data imply that the tropical Atlantic was possibly 5 degrees to 6 degrees C cooler during the Late Glacial Stage, that the climate was warmest from 8400 to 5200 years before present, and that it cooled gradually, culminating with the Little Ice Age (200 to 500 years before present). A strong warming has dominated the last two centuries.  相似文献

Crystals of MgSiO(3) perovskite synthesized at high pressures and temperatures have orthorhombic symmetry under ambient conditions. Examination by transmission electron microscopy shows that the microstructure of crystals synthesized at 26 gigapascals and 1600 degrees C is dominated by a large number of twin domains that are related by reflection operations with respect to {112} and {110} planes. These twins may be associated with the transformations of MgSiO(3) perovskite from the cubic to tetragonal and tetragonal to orthorhombic phases, respectively, upon decreasing pressure and temperature. These observations suggest that under the experimental synthesis conditions, and perhaps in the earth's lower mantle, the stable phase of MgSiO(3) might have the cubic perovskite structure.  相似文献

The growth of small ( approximately 10-micrometer) diamond particles (on 0.1-or 0.25-micrometer seed crystals) using an effusive glow discharge nozzle for H.and a separate supersonic pyrolysis jet for .CH(3) is reported. Laser micro-Raman, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data are presented as evidence that well-crystallized diamond is indeed formed. Resonant multiphoton ionization spectroscopy is used as a diagnostic for the gas-phase chemistry indicating that the radical sources are clean and quantitative and that there is no detectable interconversion of .CH(3) to C(2)H(2) under the conditions of the experiment. Diamond growth is found at substrate temperatures greater than or equal to 650 degrees C with no marked increase in the rate of growth up to 850 degrees C. Acetylene does not give good quality diamond under similar conditions.  相似文献

The junctional resistance at septa of the crayfish lateral giant axon is inversely related to temperature with a Q(1l), of about 3 over the range from 5 degrees to 20 degrees C. Nonjunctional axonal membrane is much less affected. Resistance changes occur rapidly with temperature changes. No correlates in ultrastructure of the synapses have been found.  相似文献

Indium concentrations have been determined by neutron activation in four members of each of the L3, L4, L5, and L6 chondritic meteorite classes. The range of concentrations is found to be from 0.14 to 22 parts per billion, with the highest values in L3 chondrites and the lowest values in the L5 and L6 classes. Plots of indium concentration versus relative mean deviation of pyroxene iron content, total carbon concentration, and primordial argon-36 concentration show positive correlations to varying degrees. Indium concentration appears to be a valuable parameter relating to variable formation conditions of the chondritic meteorites during the early history of the solar system.  相似文献
