Broiler chickens were electrically stunned either by immersing their heads, necks and upper breast in a waterbath stunner or by immersing their heads only. The time to recovery of muscular activity was assessed, and it was found that the deeper immersion was associated with a slightly (10 second) shorter time to resumption of head righting. When hens which had previously been implanted with electroencephalogram electrodes were electrically stunned it was found that the incidence of somatosensory evoked responses during the first 60 seconds after applying the current was not influenced by the depth of immersion. It was concluded that depth of immersion had little influence on the effectiveness of electrical stunning.  相似文献

Twenty live hens were subjected to electrical stunning using a waterbath containing a solution of technetium99 (99Tc), and 12 hen carcases were injected intratracheally with different doses of the same solution. The respiratory tract was dissected from the carcases and samples were assessed for the presence of radioactivity. Thirty-five per cent of the electrically stunned birds had 99Tc in their tracheas and 15 per cent had 99Tc in the lungs. From the dose response study it was estimated that the birds with radioactivity in their lungs had inhaled between 0.5 and 1 ml of water. In commercial slaughterlines this may be a hazard to meat hygiene.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in which the spontaneous physical behaviour, spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) and somatosensory evoked potentials were examined in chickens stunned with a handheld, head-only stunner operating at 117 v. Thirteen of 14 birds lost their evoked potentials after stunning, and when they were exsanguinated within 15 seconds they did not regain them before they died. The remaining bird appeared to have evoked potentials after stunning but there was a movement artifact in its EEG and it is possible that they were not genuine responses. When head-only stunning was applied to 50 birds for one second the birds appeared to be stunned instantaneously, in terms of their spontaneous physical behaviour. However, they recovered more rapidly than 40 birds which were stunned for seven seconds. It was concluded that the handheld stunner can stun a bird effectively, and provided that the bird's neck is cut promptly, can kill it humanely.  相似文献

The spontaneous EEG and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were examined in chickens before and after electrical stunning using a waterbath stunner. Fifty-four per cent of the birds became epileptic and lost their SEPs, and 17% were non-epileptic and appeared to retain their SEPs. It was concluded that there was a reasonably close association between the presence of epileptiform activity in the EEG and the absence of SEPs following electrical stunning, but that the absence of SEPs could be preferred as an indicator of an effective stun on conceptual grounds.  相似文献

Ten ducks were subjected to electrical stunning with their heads completely immersed in the water of a waterbath, and 10 ducks received the same current while only the bill and skin over the crop made contact with the water. The effect on visual evoked responses in the brain was examined. A higher proportion of birds had lost their visual evoked responses immediately following the current with whole head immersion. It is suggested that crop and bill immersion is less effective in disturbing brain function than whole head immersion.  相似文献

Chickens were electrically stunned either when their bodies and feathers were wet or when they were dry. The time to recovery of muscular activity following stunning with 81 mA was assessed, and it was found that it was quicker in the wet birds. When hens which had previously been implanted with electroencephalogram electrodes were stunned with 119 mA it was found that the prevalence of somatosensory evoked responses during the first 60 seconds after applying the current was not significantly influenced by the wetness of the birds. It was concluded that electrical stunning with low currents in wet birds leads to a lower prevalence of ventricular fibrillation at stunning and a shorter lasting stun in the non-fibrillated birds. This effect is possibly due to some of the current tracking over the bird's wet body rather than through the brain.  相似文献

1. The effectiveness of electrical stunning of poultry was assessed where the recommended current of 105 mA per bird was applied using a range of waveform-frequency combinations. In addition the effect of the treatments on subsequent carcase quality was investigated. 2. The use of frequencies greater than 50 Hz was associated with a failure to induce ventricular fibrillation. 3. All waveform-frequency combinations were equally effective in producing a stunned state; the time to recovery was not affected by stunning treatment but was significantly longer in heavier birds. 4. The use of high frequency (500 Hz and 1500 Hz) stunning currents resulted in a decrease in carcase downgrading and a marked reduction in the occurrence of breast muscle haemorrhages, which represent significant commercial benefits to be gained by their use.  相似文献

For disease control in the case of epidemics killing of cattle via electrical stunning is a method of choice. The official veterinarian is responsible for monitoring the adhesion to animal welfare principles during electrical stunning and killing. This requires specialised knowledge and experience as the symptoms of effective stunning are quite variable in cattle. Signs of effective and ineffective stunning are described below. In addition to suitable technical equipment, restraint of the animals and correct use of the equipment, neurophysiological processes have to be considered. Calm handling of the animals avoiding stress is a prerequisite for ensuring animal welfare and minimising pain especially when killing cattle using electrical methods.  相似文献

The effect of the stunning current at slaughter on carcase quality was examined in 1845 broiler chickens. As the current was increased there was an increase and then a decrease in the incidence of red wingtips and in haemorrhages of the wing veins and the shoulder joint. The incidence of deep breast muscle haemorrhages increased above about 130 mA, and the incidence of broken bones increased between 75 and 170 mA. The incidence of carcase defects was lowest when either less than 130 or greater than 190 mA was used to stun the birds.  相似文献

1. Broilers and broiler carcases, sampled immediately before the stunner, at the end of the processing line and from a supermarket company, were physically dissected to determine the incidence of broken bones.

2. Over 95% of the frozen broilers from the supermarket company had broken bones and there were between 3 and 4 breaks per carcase. Only 3% of live birds had broken bones so most of the carcase damage must have been caused by processing.

3. The effect of 100, 200 and 300 V electrical stunning on the incidence of broken bones was investigated: increasing voltage resulted in an increase in the incidence of broken bones in the collar region.  相似文献

Sixty-one calves were electrically stunned with 100-250 V currents (103-1806 mA) and the prevalence and duration of insensibility was assessed from their physical behaviour, the presence of epileptiform activity in their electrocorticograms, and the absence of visual evoked responses in their electrocorticograms. A current applied at 100 V across the head for 3 s failed to induce insensibility in all cases. Currents at 150-250 V induced insensibility in all calves and the shortest duration of insensibility was 44 s. It is recommended that a 150-200 V current would be appropriate for commercial use.  相似文献

The failure of commercial pre-slaughter electrical stunning to stun effectively all birds may be, in part, a result of the current following slightly different paths through the tissues of different birds. Resistivity can be used to predict current pathways, and methods are presented for determining the resistivity of a tissue in freshly-killed or anaesthetized adult fowls. A variety of tissues were tested including comb, skeletal muscle, epithelium, brain, skull bone, heart and liver. The resistivity of a particular tissue varied little between birds, with the exception of skull bone in which resistivity differed markedly from bird to bird. This variation in skull bone resistivity may explain why some birds are inadequately stunned, since in these individuals the current density in the brain is likely to be insufficient to induce an adequate epileptic seizure.  相似文献

Two pig abattoirs (A and B) equipped with an automated head-only and head-to-chest electrical stunning system, and two (C and D) equipped with a manual carbon dioxide stunning system, were evaluated to compare the effectiveness of stunning in a total of 10,454 pigs slaughtered under commercial conditions. In the abattoirs with the electrical stunning system, the percentage of animals that responded to a nose prick was significantly lower (P<0.05) in abattoir B, where a higher current intensity was used (P<0.05), than in abattoir A. No righting reflex was observed in the electrically stunned pigs. In the abattoirs with the carbon dioxide stunning system, the percentage of animals that responded to a nose prick and showed a righting reflex was significantly lower (P<0.05) in abattoir C, where the duration of the carbon dioxide cycle was longer and the interval between discharge from the system to sticking was shorter (P<0.05), than in D. Comparing the electrical and carbon dioxide stunning systems, the pigs stunned with carbon dioxide were significantly more responsive to a nose prick (P<0.05) and 25 per cent of them showed a righting reflex. Under the conditions of the study the fully automated head-only stunning with additional chest electrodes appeared to be more effective and less susceptible to incorrect handling than the manual carbon dioxide stunning system.  相似文献

The effects of head-to-back electrical stunning on the incidence of post-stunning reflex activity and cortical evoked responses were investigated in sheep. The stuns were effective in terms of inducing epileptiform activity and they resulted in cardiac fibrillation which ensured that there was no recovery of consciousness. Even though the corneal reflex and respiratory gasps were present, in 10 out of 12 sheep there were no concomitant visual and somatosensory evoked responses following a stun. In the remaining two, the responses were rudimentary and it would be unwise to conclude that the animals were conscious. It is suggested that brain stem reflexes following this stunning method should not be relied on as indices of recovery. The results support the view that an electrical stunning method which induces cardiac fibrillation results in improved animal welfare.  相似文献

1. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of gaseous stunning methods on the carcase and meat quality of broilers (dead weight 1.0 to 2.3 kg) in comparison with electrical stunning.

2. Two replicates of broilers (age 54 and 59 d respectively) were stunned in carbon dioxide, in argon or by electric current, and the carcases were plucked either by a mechanical plucker or by hand.

3. Carcase and meat quality were evaluated to determine the effect of these stunning treatments and plucking methods. The quality factors measured included pH at 20 min post‐mortem, ultimate pH, texture and colour of the pectoralis major muscle, and the incidence of carcase appearance defects, cooking loss, broken bones and bruises in the breast and leg muscles.

4. Stunning method had a significant effect on pH at 20 min, ultimate pH, texture and colour of breast meat. Plucking method had a significant effect on the cooking loss and texture.

5. Argon stunning resulted in fewer muscle haemorrhages, a more rapid early post‐mortem fall in pH and more tender breast meat than in the electrically stunned broilers; carbon dioxide stunned broilers had intermediate values for pH decline and meat tenderness but were not significantly different from argon stunning regarding muscle haemorrhages.

6. Appearance defects occurred to a similar extent in all the stunning methods and mechanical plucking resulted in 4 times as many defects compared with hand plucking; the incidence of broken bones was higher in mechanically plucked broilers than in hand plucked carcases.

7. Gaseous stunning of broilers produced relatively better quality carcases and meat than electrical stunning, and therefore may have commercial advantages.  相似文献

1. Hens were subjected to electrical stunning at 85, 105 or 125 mA per bird. The time to recovery of physical behaviour was measured in those birds which did not experience a cardiac arrest at stunning.

2. On average the duration of apparent insensibility lasted between 53 and 59 s, and at 105 mA per bird it was as short as 22 s in the bird which showed the quickest recovery.

3. Increasing the stunning current had no effect on the duration of insensibility.  相似文献

The efficiency of bleeding of broilers (g blood/kg liveweight) was measured after stunning them with either 45 per cent carbon dioxide in air for two minutes or with 2 per cent oxygen (achieved by displacing air with argon) for two minutes or with an electric current (77 or 104 mA at 50 Hz for four seconds). The results indicated that the initial rate of bleeding was higher in the electrically stunned broilers with non-fibrillated hearts than in the gas stunned broilers and electrically stunned broilers with fibrillated hearts. This difference was significant up to 60 seconds after neck cutting (P less than 0.05) but after 140 seconds all the broilers had bled out to a similar extent (30 to 33 g/kg liveweight). It is concluded that after gas stunning the time interval between neck cutting and scalding should be 60 to 140 seconds.  相似文献
