With increased emphasis for diesel substitution, production of brown mustard (Brassica juncea), canola (Brassica napus) and camelina (Camelina sativa) used as biodiesels may increase in the High Plains. Since these are new crops to this region, understanding their growth is critical for their acceptance. The objective was to elucidate the growth pattern of these crops when spring-planted in western Nebraska. Field trials were conducted in 2005, 2006 and 2007 with early May planting. Plots were seeded 2 cm deep at 200 plants m−2. Four plants were destructively sampled at about 28, 40, 53, 61, and 82 days after planting (DAP). Canopy growth was field measured. Canopy heights peaked by 61 DAP at 95, 85 and 70 cm for brown mustard, canola and camelina, respectively. Stem length increased to 82 DAP at the rates of 1.24, 1.22 and 0.85 cm/d for brown mustard, canola and camelina, respectively. Root weight accumulated linearly from 28 to 61 DAP. The Brassica grew roots faster and achieved higher weights than camelina. From 28 to 40 DAP, vine fresh weight accumulated rapidly for these crops, leveled and then gradually declined as leaves desiccated. Vine dry weight increased to 61 DAP and then plateaued. The maximum vine dry weights, reached at 61 DAP, were 4.3, 4.5 and 3.0 g/plant for brown mustard, canola and camelina, respectively. By 61 DAP, pods were present and accumulated dry matter while leaves senesced. Pod fresh weight reached its peak at 61 DAP while its dry weight increased linearly to 82 DAP at rates of 0.36, 0.24 and 0.096 g/d for brown mustard, canola and camelina, respectively. Harvest in 2006 showed no significant (p < 0.05) difference between crops with a mean yield of about 1500 kg ha−1. Fatty acid composition was dramatically different between the crops as previously reported. The growth patterns of these crops indicated that all three would be suitable for production in the northern High Plains.  相似文献

Camelina (Camelina sativa L.) was introduced for the first time in Chile in 2008 as a potential feedstock for biodiesel and also as high omega-3-containing seed oil for the salmon feed industry. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum seeding date to maximize camelina seed yield in South Central Chile. The experiment was conducted under dryland conditions in Chillán, El Carmen, Los Angeles, Gorbea, and Osorno in 2008 and in Chillán and Los Angeles in 2009. The experimental design was a RCB with a split-plot arrangement with four replicates, where the main plot was the seeding date (five dates) and the sub-plot the spring type cultivars (Gold of Pleasure, Suneson, and Blaine Creek). Seeding dates at each environment were targeted to 30 April, 15 May, 30 May, 30 June, and 30 July of 2008 and 2009. The combined analysis of variance indicated no cultivar main effect or interactions with cultivar. The date by environment interaction was significant for seed yield. There were no seed yield differences among seeding dates in Chillán and El Carmen. The first three seeding dates were the highest yielding in Los Angeles and Osorno, and only the first seeding date was significantly higher in seed yield in Gorbea. Highest seed yield at Los Angeles, Gorbea, and Osorno were 1995, 1310, and 2314 kg ha−1. Seed oil content was not different among seeding dates in Chillán and El Carmen. Highest seed oil content occurred at Osorno and Gorbea on the first three seeding dates and ranged from 420 to 457 g kg−1. Spring camelina cultivars are well adapted to South Central Chile as a winter annual crop when seeded before 15 May except in Osorno when seeded before 30 May. No disease or insectpests were observed except for Aster Yellow infestation at Chillán and Los Angeles. Camelina has great potential as an oilseed for biodiesel and as a source of omega-3 for the pharmaceutical industry but markets for it need to be developed locally for camelina to become an option for growers.  相似文献

Summary Field experiments during 1984–6 tested the effects of planting date on the development of aphid infestations and the spread of potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) in rogued or unrogued plots of potatoes, cv. Spunta. Plantings were made each month from December to April, the customary time for planting being February. Aphid infestation in early-planted plots was severe throughout the growing season; plots planted in February were also severely infested early in the growing season but the populations later gradually declined to undetectable levels. Nevertheless, the incidence of PLRV in the latter plots was as high as in those planted in December-January. Late-planted crops escaped aphid infestation and PLRV infection, either in part (March planting) or completely (April planting). Such crops, however, were uneconomical due to poor yields and heavy losses from potato tuber moth infestation. Roguing significantly reduced the spread of PLRV in all years but its interaction with planting date was insignificant.  相似文献

Camelina (Camelina sativa), guayule (Parthenium argentatum), lesquerella (Physaria fendleri), and vernonia (Centrapalus pauciflorus [formerly Vernonia galamensis]) are either under limited commercial production or being developed for production in the southwestern USA. Insect pests are a potential economic threat to all these new crops, with Lygus hesperus, the western tarnished plant bug, among the most prominent due to its regional abundance and propensity to feed on reproductive plant tissue. The objectives of this study were to establish baseline data on the feeding behavior and potential impact of L. hesperus on camelina, guayule, lesquerella and vernonia. Behavioral observations of adult females and males, and nymphs of this insect were made in the laboratory. Insects spent ≈35% of their time either probing (=tasting) or feeding on various reproductive and vegetative tissues of guayule, lesquerella or vernonia, but only 20% on camelina. When insects did probe and feed they preferred reproductive tissues, primarily flowers and siliques/achenes, and there were differences in these behaviors relative to crop but not generally to insect stage or sex. Insects probed and fed more on flower tissue of guayule and vernonia compared with camelina and lesquerella, and more on siliques of lesquerella compared with achenes of vernonia. When probing and feeding on vegetative tissue, there was generally a preference for stems compared with leaves in all crops except guayule. Results show that L. hesperus will readily feed on the economically important tissues of all crops, and although research has shown that this feeding did not consistently affect lesquerella yield, further work will be needed to determine if such feeding poses a risk to commercial production of camelina, guayule or vernonia.  相似文献

The rotation crops wheat, barley, oat, maize, soybean, rye, yellow mustard, alfalfa, and spring canola and weeds eastern black nightshade, velvetleaf, timothy grass, orchard grass, and Giant foxtail common to potato-growing areas in North America were used to study the host range ofColletotrichum coccodes, the causal agent of potato black dot. The fungus was isolated from nine of 14 rotation crops and weeds that were inoculated: yellow mustard, soybean, spring canola, alfalfa, oat, eastern black nightshade, velvetleaf, giant foxtail, and timothy grass. In all, colonization was highest in black nightshades (87%) and velvetleaf (80%). Among the rotation crops, colonization was highest on yellow mustard (59%) followed by spring canola (33%) and soybean (30%).Colletotrichum coccodes was not isolated from wheat, barley, rye, maize, or orchard grass. The results indicated that crops used for rotation with potato should be selected carefully to prevent the increase ofC. coccodes inoculum in the soil and that weeds may help maintain viable inoculum ofC. coccodes in the absence of potato. Based on these results we recommend that wheat, barley, maize, or rye be used in rotation with potato in areas whereC. coccodes is present in high levels in the soil.  相似文献

The oilseed crop Camelina sativa (camelina) has lower production costs than oilseed rape in some climates. For this reason, the production of biodiesel-grade methyl ester from camelina oil was evaluated. The evaluation included quality assessment of esters produced in laboratory and pilot plant, an examination of methods of improving ester low-temperature properties, and vehicle trials. Laboratory esterifications gave ester yields similar to rape-seed oil. Six 350 kg batches of unrefined camelina oil with acid values from 3 to 6 were esterified in a pilot plant. Ester-specific properties were satisfactory with one exception; the iodine number of 155 far exceeded the value of 120 required by the relevant EU standard. Fuel-specific properties of the camelina methyl esters were largely within specification, though low-temperature behaviour could be a problem in some climates. This problem could be overcome by the use of suitable pour-point depressants or by blending with diesel oil. In vehicle tests, the reduction in fuel economy with camelina ester was similar to that with biodiesel from other feedstocks. The high iodine number of camelina methyl ester did not lead to a more rapid deterioration of the lubricating oil. However, it was concluded that further engine trials would be needed before the use of camelina ester as an undiluted vehicle fuel could be recommended.  相似文献

Narrow brown leaf spot (NBLS) of rice (Oryza sativa L.) is caused by Cercospora janseana (Racib). O. Const. (Synonyms: Cercospora oryzae Miyake, Passalora janseana Racib. U.). Experimental studies were conducted at Rice Research Station, Louisiana State University, and Agricultural Center, Crowley, to manage NBLS by fungicide application of propiconazole at different growth stages of rice cultivars having different susceptibility levels to NBLS in different planting dates. Results of these studies revealed that April (early) had less NBLS severity as compared to May (late) planting. Very susceptible cultivars, CL131 and Cheniere, had the highest and resistant cultivars, Della and Presidio, had the lowest NBLS severity at both the planting dates. Propiconazole application significantly reduced the NBLS severity in comparison to untreated. Fungicide application at panicle initiation was the most effective time to manage NBLS on the very susceptible and susceptible cultivars at both planting dates. NBLS on moderately susceptible cultivars was best managed by applying fungicide either at panicle initiation or early boot stage in early planting but panicle initiation was the best time to apply fungicide in late planting. Resistant cultivars did not need fungicide in April planting but did need in May planting. Rice yield was determined to be higher in April than May planting. Fungicide application at early boot stage protected the yield by 9.4% in April planting and 34.2% when applied at panicle initiation in May. Susceptible cultivar, Cheniere, exhibited the greatest yield and resistant cultivars had lowest yield in both the planting dates regardless of its susceptibility level to NBLS. Yield of very susceptible to susceptible cultivars was reduced in late planting but no effect was observed on yield of moderately susceptible and resistant cultivars.  相似文献

Lupin, field pea, lentil, chickpea, canola, linseed, and barley were sown at different times (late April-early July) to study their effects on subsequent wheat production on a red earth at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. The cultivars of field pea (Pisum sativum) included Dunn, Derrimut, Maitland and Dinkum; narrow-leaf lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) cultivars were Danja, Geebung and Gungurru, and either the L. angustifolius line 75A/330 (1989–1990) or the broad-leaf lupin L. albus cv. Ultra (1991–1992). Only one cultivar of the other crops was grown in any year and after 1989 lentil (Lens culinaris cv. Aldinga) was replaced by chickpea (Cicer arietinum cv. Amethyst). The canola (cv. Shiralee (1989–1991), cv. Barossa (1992)) and linseed (cv. Glenelg) rotations received annual applications of 40–50 kg N/ha as urea.Compared to barley and the oilseeds, grain legumes increased soil mineral N supply to the following wheat crop. Over 4 years the mean wheat grain yield response to a broad-leaf crop, relative to barley, was 115% for lupin, 84% for field pea, 88% for linseed and 86% for canola. However, the effects of the various crops on subsequent wheat grain yields and grain protein varied markedly with season. The main advantage of lupin over field pea occurred in years when disease reduced growth of field pea crops. In high rainfall years, wheat yields following lentil and chickpea were lower than those following lupin. The narrow-leaf cultivars of lupin promoted greater wheat yields than either the reduced branching line 75A/330 or the broad-leaf albus cultivar Ultra. Delayed sowing of lupin reduced yield and grain protein of wheat, except when low rainfall curtailed growth of either crop in the rotation. There was little effect of field pea sowing date on wheat grain yield but sowing in late June combined with a dry spring, reduced mineral N supply and grain protein. Late sowing of oilseeds had no consistent effect on wheat grain yield but increased grain protein in most years. Late sowing of barley typically increased wheat grain yield but had little effect on grain protein. The effects of sowing time were mainly attributed to effects on soil N supply and for barley on disease incidence in the subsequent wheat.  相似文献

The diamond-back moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a destructive cosmopolitan pest of cruciferous crops. The pest is present wherever its host plants exist and is considered to be one of the most widely distributed of all the Lepidoptera. We investigated the effect of various host plants on the fitness of P. xylostella and tested the hypothesis by studying development time, growth, fecundity and survival on cabbage (Brassica oleracea capitata), cauliflower (Brassica oleracea botrytis), radish (Raphanus sativus), turnip (Brassica rapa), mustard (Brassica compestris) and canola (Brassica napus var. canola). The developmental time from eggs to adult eclosion was the shortest (10 days) on canola and the longest (13 days) on turnip. Fecundity was greatest on canola (350) followed by cauliflower (268 eggs) by females eclosed from the pupae reared on canola and cauliflower, respectively, while the minimum numbers of eggs (184) were observed on cabbage. The number of eggs hatched was the highest (80%) when larvae fed on cauliflower. Survival to the adult stage was the highest (94%) on mustard followed by cauliflower and lowest (64%) on turnip. The net replacement rate was lowest for populations reared on cabbage (32.3), which was also reflected by the lowest intrinsic rate of population increase (0.20). The correlation between the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) and the mean relative growth rate was significant (t = 20.02 d.f. = 4, P < 0.05). Canola and mustard proved to be the most suitable hosts for P. xylostella because of shorter developmental period, higher percentage of survival and higher number of eggs. The data point to the role of host plants in increasing local P. xylostella populations.  相似文献

Brown rot (Monilinia spp.) affects the shelf life, fruit quality and marketability of peaches (Prunus persica L.). Increasing consumer concern regarding food safety makes it necessary to search for natural environmentally friendly alternative products for postharvest disease control. In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) punnets containing thyme oil (TO sachets) and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films significantly reduced the incidence and severity of brown rot caused by Monilinia laxa in artificially inoculated peach fruits (cv. Kakawa) held at 25 °C for 5 days. Furthermore, PET punnets containing TO sachets and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films significantly reduced the brown rot incidence to 10% in naturally infected fruits stored at 0.5 °C, 90% RH for 7 days and at the simulated market shelf conditions for 3 days at 15 °C, 75% RH. The chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films maintained the active components of thyme oil, thymol (56.43% RA), caryophyllen (9.47% RA) and β-linalool (37.6% RA) within the (head space volatiles) punnet. Panellists preferred fruits packed from commercial punnet containing thyme oil (sachets) and sealed with chitosan/boehmite nanocomposite lidding films due to overall appearance, taste, and natural peach flavour.  相似文献

Studies were conducted in Potter Co., Pennsylvania to investigate the effect of powdery scab (Spongospora subterranea) on five potato cultivars (Norchip, Rosa, Kennebec, Katahdin, and Monona) at two planting dates. Soil temperature was within the range of 15–18 C and soil moisture was within 15–19% based on dry weight throughout the season. The effect of planting date was significant at each disease assessment, except for the severity on the fourth assessment. By the end of the season, incidence of scab was 66% or more for all cultivars. Rosa, Kennebec and Katahdin had a greater scab incidence over both planting dates and a greater severity at the first planting date than Monona and Norchip.  相似文献

Canola oil is high in oleic acid which is commonly used for food and industrial purposes. To determine adaptability of spring canola (Brassica napus L.) to the High Plains for industrial oil production, 26 irrigated trials were conducted from 2005 to 2008. Trials were divided into five regions—1: 36-37°N 108°W; 2: 39-40°N 101-103°W; 3: 41-42°N 102-103°W; 4: 41-42°N 104°W; 5: 43-44°N 106-108°W. Cultural practices were based on site-specific protocols. Four cultivars, Hyola 401, Hyola 357 Magnum, SW Marksman, and SW Patriot, were planted in replicated plots in April or May under standard irrigation and harvested in July to October depending on region. Seed yield Hyola 401 and Hyola 357 Magnum were higher than SW Marksman and SW Patriot across the five regions and within Regions 1, 2, 3, and 5. Regions 1, 2 and 3 yielded significantly greater than did Regions 4 and 5. Samples from 18 trials were examined for their oil content and fatty acid distribution. The four cultivars had greater than 38% oil content; SW Marksman and SW Patriot had higher oil content than Hyola 401 and Hyola 357 Mag. Higher oil content was achieved in Regions 1, 4 and 5. Across and within regions, the percent of oleic acid did not differ for the four cultivars. The mean content of oleic acid decreased going north from Region 2 to Region 5, as did seed yield in the High Plains. Linoleic acid increased going north from Region 1. Linolenic acids showed little variation across regions. Considering yield and total oil content together, growing spring canola would be excellent in the High Plains.  相似文献

The host range of eighty isolates of Leptosphaeria maculans obtained from various cruciferous hosts in Western Australia was tested by inoculating onto cotyledons of 13 cruciferous hosts, including six Brassica species and one interspecific line of Brassica. These field isolates produced highly variable responses across the hosts tested. One or more isolates overcame the resistance in each of the tested Brassica species with the B-genome, such as B. juncea, B. nigra and B. carinata and of other species tested, including Raphanus raphanistrum, Crambe abyssinica, Sinapis alba, Eruca vesicaria and Raphanus sativus. None of the isolates tested to date were virulent on Camelina sativa. Of all isolates, 48.8% (and 75% of isolates taken from cultivars containing single dominant gene-based resistance derived from B. rapa ssp. sylvestris) showed high virulence against canola cultivars containing this single dominant gene-based resistance. There was a relationship between host source of isolates with virulence. Results clearly illustrated that extensive levels of variation exist within L. maculans populations in Western Australia such that major gene-based resistance in a range of these hosts could be rapidly overcome by one or more field populations of the pathogen. It is noteworthy that this ability to overcome such resistance in various cruciferous hosts was found to be present in certain isolates in the L. maculans population even prior to exposure of the pathogen to such major gene-based resistance sources in commercial crops. Our results indicated that seeking major gene-based resistance from within cruciferae for B. napus canola breeding, including from taxa which to date have shown resistance to L. maculans when used in the field as rotation, industrial oil or green manure crops, may lead to both breakdown and wastage of these valuable sources of resistance to blackleg disease.  相似文献

The uniqueness of purslane (Portulaca spp.) asthe richest vegetable source of omega-3 (-3)fatty acids is well documented. However, purslane hasnot been domesticated or fully evaluated for itsnutritive value. The objective of this study was todetermine the influence of planting date on chemicalcomposition of purslane accessions. Eight accessionsfrom different geographical locations were planted 12days apart, and whole plants harvested at full bloom. Chemical analysis (DM basis) of leaves showedsignificant differences among varieties for all thecharacteristics measured. Accession by planting dateinteraction influenced (p < 0.05) levels of crudeprotein, total lipids, and carbohydrate contents. Wild Greek accession had the highest, while aBeltsville (Maryland) wild type had the lowest crudeprotein content (27.1 vs 20.5%) at the secondplanting date. Crude protein, lipid and ash levelswere most influenced (p < 0.05) by planting date. Total lipids varied from 4.0–5.8% and 3.7–5.1% forthe first and second planting dates, respectively. Selected fatty acid content indicated significantly(p < 0.05) higher levels of 18: 26, and18: 33 in the Dutch Garden accession comparedwith other varieties. The Egyptian wild accession hadthe lowest level of 18: 33. The ratio of 3 to 6 acids, which ranged from 5.5 to22.3 indicated a highnutritive value of purslane compared to other oilcrops such as soybeans and perrilla. The high levelsof protein in purslane compete with those of othercommercially important vegetable crops. The studyshows that, in spite of its genetic diversity, purslaneremains one of the most abundant terrestrial vegetablesources of Omega-3 fatty acids and other essentialnutrients potentially beneficial for humans as well asanimals.  相似文献

Abstract

Somaclonal variation in heading date, protein content in brown rice and regeneration ability was examined in regenerants derived from anther culture of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Regenerants were highly homozygous, and the variances in culm length and 1000 grain weight among panicle-row lines of A2 (the second generation after chromosome duplication of the progeny derived from anther culture) were smaller than those in their parents. Some A2 regenerants headed earlier than their F2 population. In some regenerants derived from anther culture of cv. Asahi, protein content in brown rice was lower, and the heading date was earlier than those in cv. Asahi. By successive anther culture (using regenerant successively) of cv. Shirayukihime (developed by anther culture), regenerants with higher regeneration ability than that of Shirayukihime were obtained. Therefore, anther culture was proven to be quite useful as a mutation breeding method.  相似文献

Depending on sowing month, temperatures during boll growth in the tropical dry season are potentially sub- or supra optimal for the fibre quality parameters length and strength. The aims of this research were to: (1) measure the effect of sowing date on the quality of fibre from cotton grown during the dry season as this was not known; (2) use the range in temperature created by varying sowing date in the dry season, to derive relationships with gin turnout, the fibre quality parameters length, strength and micronaire. Over three seasons, two Gossypium hirsutum (upland) cultivars and one Gossypium barbadense cultivar were sown from March to June at the Ord River (15.5°S), Western Australia. For the highest yielding sowing months of March and April, fibre length and strength were at or below market preference due to relatively low temperatures and solar radiation during early fibre development. Fibre micronaire achieved market preference at all sowing months due to favourable late season temperatures and radiation. It is likely that current G. barbadense cultivars will have short fibre when grown in the dry season. For fibre length and gin turnout quadratic responses (p < 0.05) to weighted minimum temperature were fitted for each cultivar, where the optimum minimum temperature was 18–20 and 16–17 °C, respectively. The cultivar differences in fibre properties observed here suggest that wider screening may identify G. hirsutum cultivars with suitable fibre length and strength in the dry season. It was demonstrated by weighting of temperatures for the contribution of the cohort of bolls pollinated each day; the variation in crop fibre quality and gin turnout in the field due to temperature can be predicted.  相似文献

In 2009 and 2010, the effect of delayed planting on bacterial pustule (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines) and wildfire (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci) in four soybean cultivars was evaluated in fields in Suwon and Naju, Korea. Soybean was planted on 15 May as the first (traditional) planting date; then, planting was delayed at approximately 15-day intervals (three times) after the first planting. In plots planted approximately 15 or 30 days after the traditional planting date, the disease incidence in highly (Saeolkong and Taegwangkong) and moderately (Pungsannamulkong) susceptible cultivars was significantly reduced under moderate disease pressure, but disease reduction in highly susceptible cultivars was sometimes diminished especially against bacterial pustule under high disease pressure. Altered planting date had no effect on disease incidence in the least susceptible (resistant) cultivar (Cheongja-3-ho), regardless of disease pressure. Consistent differences in disease occurrence were not observed between planting locations. The results from this study indicate that delayed soybean planting reduced the bacterial disease incidence and differentially affected resistant and susceptible cultivars. Thus, planting resistant cultivars at the optimal planting date is desirable, but in the case of susceptible cultivars, delayed planting could be considered along with application of other control measures such as agrochemicals.  相似文献

Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is emerging as a serious threat to canola production on the Canadian Prairies. Germination of soil-borne resting spores (RSs) and their subsequent infection of canola root hairs are important requirements for the establishment of the clubroot pathogen in canola. Stimulation of RS germination by certain non-host plant species and elevation of soil pH by application of calcium-rich compost may provide some level of clubroot control in the field. Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions to determine the effects of (i) host and non-host root exudates (REs) and different pH values on the germination of RSs, and (ii) different pH values either alone or in conjunction with a Ca-containing nutrient solution (NS) on root hair infection of a susceptible canola cultivar. The percentage of RS germination was significantly enhanced when incubated with REs prepared in NS from three plant species compared to a NS alone or sterile dH2O. Non-host REs from perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) produced higher spore germination than exudate preparations from canola (Brassica napus L.) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis, cv. Granaat) roots. The percentages of RS germination were higher at pH values ranging from 5.0 to <7.0, and lower at pH values >7.0 in both the presence and absence of REs. The effects of various pH values on the percent of root hair infection varied. Root hair infection was higher at relatively lower pH values (6.0–7.0) compared to either lower or higher pH values when a NS was added. It was however lower at pH values below 6.5 compared to those above 6.5 when the experiment was conducted in the absence of a NS. The possible impacts of REs, different pH values, and calcium levels in the soil on the severity of clubroot on canola are discussed.  相似文献
