The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between the placental retention time (PRT) and the reproductive performance following mating at the foal heat in Thoroughbreds. For this purpose, we interviewed 292 farmers over a period of 3 years with questionnaires evaluating foaling, expulsion of placenta and reproductive performance at the foal heat in 1,432 mares. The obtained data were later compared with a previous study of heavy draft mares. The average of the PRT of the 1,432 Thoroughbred mares was 58 ± 88 min (mean ± SD). The mean PRT of Thoroughbreds was significantly shorter than that of the148 min of heavy draft mares. The incidences of retained placenta (RP) occurring in the Thoroughbred mares were 5.2 and 4.0%, for over 3 and 4 hr after foaling, respectively. The incidence of RP over 4 hr was significantly lower than that of 25% in heavy draft mares. The pregnancy rate at foal heat of the mares in which PRT was less than 3 hr was 37%, and it significantly decreased to 11% for those with PRT of more than 3 hr. In the comparison of the reproductive performance between Thoroughbred and heavy draft mares, the pregnancy rate of Thoroughbreds dropped drastically to 10% when PRT exceeded 40, and in consequence, the pregnancy rate of Thoroughbreds was significantly lower than the 30% of heavy draft mares, which had a PRT of over 4 hr. In conclusion, the Thoroughbred mares had a low incidence of RP, however, a PRT exceeding 3 hr severely affected the reproductive performance at the foal heat.  相似文献

Retained placenta is considered to be a common problem in postpartum mares. The incidence varies from 6% to 54% depending on the breed, with higher incidence in heavy draught mares than in light-weight mares. Retained placenta has been linked to lower postpartum oxytocin concentration, impaired uterine involution, and dystocia. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of early manual removal of placenta immediately postpartum on subsequent fertility parameters (development of free intrauterine fluid, inflammatory status of endometrium, and on pregnancy rates) and to compare them with mares with spontaneous expulsion of placenta. A total of 29 mares, mainly Irish draught, were closely monitored during foaling by closed circuit television and allocated to two groups: (1) mares that expelled the placenta spontaneously within 3 hours of foaling; and (2) mares that were cleansed manually immediately after foal delivery. All mares were examined and scanned 5 and 9 days postpartum, and free intrauterine fluid was recorded; endometrial swabs were taken 9 days postpartum for endometrial cytology and culture. None of the fertility parameters analyzed showed statistical difference between groups 1 and 2. Therefore, it can be concluded that early manual removal of placenta has no detrimental effects on subsequent fertility of mares and, therefore, can be recommended when a veterinarian attends a foaling.  相似文献

Postpartum metritis is a common problem in many animal species. In equine medicine, sequelae of postpartum metritis vary from delay in uterine involution to development of systemic acute metritis (SAM), toxemia, and laminitis. Heavy draft mares potentially have higher risk of suffering from SAM than light breed mares. Postpartum fever (PF) mostly appears as a sign of SAM. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the incidence of PF in 158 foalings from 62 heavy draft mares by multiple logistic regressions. The objective variable was the incidence of PF, and the explanatory variables were year foaled, month foaled, age of mare, breed of mare (crossbred heavy draft horse vs. Percheron), gestation length, foaling difficulty (easy delivery vs. dystocia), retained fetal membranes, stillbirth, and sex of offspring. Twenty-four out of 158 mares were diagnosed with PF. Stepwise regression analysis showed that breed of dams and foaling difficulty were significant risk factors for PF. Percheron mares had higher risk than crossbred mares (odds ratio: 3.4). Dystocia had higher risk than easy delivery (odds ratio: 3.3). Percheron mares had higher incidence of PF than crossbred mares even in the cases of easy delivery. Risks for damage and contamination of birth canal will be increased especially if the fetal delivery needs assistance. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to consider the foaling difficulty and the breed of dams for earlier detection of PF in peripartum heavy draft mares.  相似文献

Twenty-one pregnant mares with single or twin conceptuses between 41 and 65 days of gestational age were allotted to 5 treatment groups. A ventral median celiotomy was performed in all mares. In group-1 mares (3 mares, single conceptus), the uterus and fetus were palpated for 5 minutes. In group-2 mares (3 mares, single conceptus, flunixin meglumine), 250 ml of sterile placental fluid was injected into the nongravid uterine horn. In group-3 mares (4 mares, unicornuate twin conceptuses), group-4 mares (3 mares, unicornuate twin conceptuses, flunixin meglumine), and group-5 mares (8 mares, bicornuate twin conceptuses, flunixin meglumine), 1 conceptus was removed from the uterus via hysterotomy. All mares received progesterone prophylactically until day 100 of gestation or until the fetus died. The 3 mares in group 1 delivered clinically normal, live foals. The mean prostaglandin F2 alpha metabolite (PGFM) plasma concentration peaked at 180 +/- 5.2 pg/ml during uterine manipulation and fetal palpation, then declined to baseline by 1 hour. Free placental fluid (group 2) undermined the chorioallantois ventrally and resulted in fetal death within 3 hours after surgery. The mean PGFM plasma concentration peaked at 39 +/- 4 pg/ml following injection of placental fluid. None of the remaining fetuses in the 7 mares with unicornuate twin conceptuses (groups 3 and 4) survived. Five mares with unicornuate twin conceptuses (group 5) delivered single viable foals. Reproductive performance and factors that decrease the pregnancy rate in heavy draft horses bred at the foal heat were investigated. The study was based on a total of 422 mares varying from 4 to 20 years in age, which had foaled during the period 1991 to 1994. Over the four years, the percentage of the mares bred at the foal heat was 62.6% and the pregnancy rate was 60.2%. The pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat in 1991 (67.7%) was significantly higher than that in 1992 (44.1%). Significant correlation was observed between the pregnancy rate and the mean placental retention time and also between the pregnancy rate and the mean temperature during the winter season. When compared on a monthly basis, the pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat in February was 53.3% and in May, 48.2%. The mean number of covers per mare at the foal heat was 2.3; this figure decreased to 1.8 for those bred in May. The mean number of days from parturition to the first breeding date was 11.3 days and the number of days from parturition to the last breeding day at the foal heat was 14.0 days. The number of days from parturition to the last breeding day at the foal heat decreased to 12.5 days in May. The latter may have been influenced by factors involving the stallion. When compared on a monthly basis, the mean placental retention time was longest in January (219 min.) following which it decreased gradually up to mid-summer. The mean placental retention time of mares which were not bred at the foal heat was significantly longer (197 min.) than in mares bred at the foaling heat (143 min.) and also in mares that conceived following breeding at the foal heat (135 min.). The pregnancy rate was less in mares bred shortly after parturition. The findings of this study would suggest that certain factors decrease the pregnancy rate in mares bred at the foal heat. The stress of low temperature in winter, prolonged placental retention time, breeding too early after parturition and factors pertaining to individual stallions may be involved. Expulsion of the placenta as soon as possible after foaling and appropriate breeding timing are significant factors that can influence the pregnancy rate following breeding at the foal heat.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical applications and limitations of daily low-dose oxytocin injections for the induction of parturition in pregnant at term mares, the attention was focussed on the efficacy of the treatment and on its possible negative effects on mare and foal. Three-hundred and fifty pregnant full term Standardbred mares were used: 176 were allowed to foal spontaneously, 174 were treated daily with 3.5 IU of oxytocin i.m. when mammary secretion showed a calcium concentration ≥ 200 ppm. For each mare, gestational length, outcome and duration of foaling, placenta expulsion time were recorded. Physical and behavioural characteristics of each foal were also recorded. Administration of oxytocin resulted in the delivery of a normal foal within 120 min in 68.9% of treated mares: 51.3% responded to the first oxytocin administration, 14.2% to the second and 3.4% to the third. No significant difference between treated and control mares was observed in the gestational length (340 ± 8 days vs 337 ± 7 days), duration of foaling (10 ± 5.6 min vs 11 ± 4.9 min), incidence of dystocia (1.4% vs 1.7%) and failure of rupture of the allantochorion (0% vs 0.6%). No significant difference was observed in the incidence of placental retention between treated and control groups (8.1% vs 6.3%). Physical and behavioural characteristics were normal in foals of both groups. In conclusion, daily injections of low doses of oxytocin in at term mares showed only moderate efficacy for inducing parturition. However, the easy applicability and the complete safety for both mare and foal, of this method of foaling induction makes it a useful tool to simplify the management of mares in commercial stud farms.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine sequential changes in the immunologic parameters of perinatal mares and neonatal foals of the heavy draft horse. Blood samples were collected from clinically healthy pregnant mares and their newborn foals every week from 1 month before the expected foaling date, and 1 hour, 1 day (24-48 hours), and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after foaling. Peripheral blood samples were used to examine total leukocyte counts (n = 20), differential leukocyte counts (n = 20), lymphocyte subpopulations (n = 13), lymphocyte responses to mitogens (n = 10), neutrophil phagocytic function (n = 12), and serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations (n = 10). In perinatal mares, remarkable changes observed included increased neutrophils, decreased lymphocytes, decreased CD4+ T lymphocytes, and decreased lymphocyte responses to mitogens at delivery. These changes were speculated to be the result of physical stress associated with delivery. In neonatal foals, increase in the phagocytic function of neutrophils, and increase in serum IgG concentration after suckling colostrum and increase of lymphocytes accompanied by physiologic growth were observed. Compared to dams, foals showed lower phagocytic function of neutrophils before suckling and fewer lymphocytes and lower lymphocyte responses to mitogens within 1 day after birth. This study revealed immunologic dynamics in perinatal mares and neonatal foals. Immunologic functions are suppressed in foaling mares and are immature in neonatal foals, especially before colostral intake. We expect these data will be useful for further studies in the field of clinical immunology, and preventive medicine.  相似文献

The case records of 19 mares undergoing caudal ventral midline celiotomy for cesarean section were reviewed. Surgical exposure to the uterus was good, and the incisions healed by first intention in surviving mares. Seventeen mares (89%) survived to time of hospital discharge. Six foals (32%) were delivered alive, of which three were euthanatized because of severe deformity (1 died on day 6 and 2 survived to time of discharge). The most frequent postoperative complications were abdominal pain (13 mares), anemia (10 mares), and retained placenta (6 mares). Sixteen mares were bred during at least one season after the cesarean section and eight (50%) produced at least one foal. The collective foaling rate for these mares, bred a total of 25 seasons, was 36%. Only one mare bred during the same year as the surgery produced a live foal. The collective foaling rate for mares bred after the year of the surgery was 50%.  相似文献

Eighteen suckled Brahman cows were allotted randomly to treatments arranged in a three-period crossover design according to calving date and prior treatment such that each cow received 30, 150 and 300 IU oxytocin (OT) i.v. on d 10, 20 or 30 postpartum. Blood was collected via an indwelling jugular catheter every 15 min for 195 min. Samples collected before OT administration were used to determine basal plasma 13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) concentration. Day, time and the day X dose interaction affected PGFM (P less than .0001). All doses of OT elevated PGFM on all days postpartum (P less than .0001). Basal PGFM was greater (P less than .0001) on d 10 (252.2 +/- 51.2 pg/ml) than on d 20 (78.2 +/- 14.8 pg/ml) or on d 30 (64.8 +/- 7.4 pg/ml). The rise in PGFM in response to OT was greatest on d 10 and decreased (P less than .001) with increasing days postpartum. On d 10, 150 IU of OT caused a greater (P less than .0007) rise in PGFM than either 30 or 300 IU. On d 20, the 300-IU dose raised PGFM more (P less than .005) than either 30 or 150 IU, whereas on d 30 no differences among doses were detected. Cows had higher basal PGFM and a greater response to OT on d 10 postpartum than on d 20 or 30; cows were more responsive on d 20 than on d 30. This study investigated the effects of administering vitamin E and selenium to pregnant heavy draft horsemares on the incidence of retained placenta and postpartum reproductive performance and on the prevention of the white muscle disease in their foals. In study A, 1,000 mg of vitamin E and 50 mg of selenium (E-SE 20 mL) were given to 22 mares 3 weeks before expected parturition (335 days counted from last mating), whereas 28 mares were used as controls. In study B, E-SE were administered 2 weeks before expected parturition at 2 dose levels, with 25 mares receiving 20 mL E-SE, 19 mares receiving 10 mL, and 29 mares kept as controls. Vitamin E and selenium were assayed in serum collected from some of the mares before administration of E-SE and again postpartum and from the foals immediately after birth. Serum selenium concentrations before E-SE administration were deficient (<65 ng/mL) in all mares (n = 48) but were increased in the postpartum sample from treated mares regardless of the dose or timing of administration (n = 31) (P = .05). Only study B mares were deficient in vitamin E prepartum, and both dose levels of E-SE had corrected this in the postpartum sample (P = .01). All foals were selenium deficient regardless of whether their dams had received E-SE or not, although concentrations were higher in foals from treated study A mares than from controls (P = .05). Mares with the highest selenium concentrations prepartum (40 ng/mL and over) had shorter placental retention times than mares with lower selenium concentrations (P = .05) and did not respond to E-SE with a further reduction in retention time. By contrast, mares with prepartum selenium concentrations between 20 and 40 ng/mL tended to respond to E-SE with a shortened placental retention time (P = .07). E-SE administration reduced the mean number of days from parturition to last mating (nonpregnant term) in study B mares (P = .05) and in mares with adequate prepartum vitamin E concentrations (>300 g/mL, P = .05). We conclude that maintaining high level serum vitamin E and selenium concentrations of prepartum mares is expected to increase fertility of selenium-deficient mares. Therefore, the regimen of vitamin E and selenium administrations to selenium deficient mares should be developed.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-year-old Thoroughbred mare was evaluated because of placental abnormalities and a retained placental remnant. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Microbial culture of the placenta yielded pure growth of Amycolatopsis spp. Histologic examination of the placenta revealed a focally expanding chorionitis with intralesional gram-positive filamentous bacilli and multifocal allantoic adenomatous hyperplasia on the apposing allantoic surface. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Treatment with lavage and oxytocin resulted in expulsion of the placental remnant within hours of parturition. The mare did not become pregnant again despite multiple breedings. The foal appeared healthy but died of complications during an elective surgical procedure at 7 weeks of age. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To the author's knowledge, all previously confirmed cases of nocardioform placentitis have been in mares bred in the central Kentucky region. Indications that the pathogen in the mare reported here is a different species than that isolated in Kentucky suggest that this is an emerging disease. Mares with nocardioform placentitis usually do not have the same clinical signs as mares with placentitis resulting from an ascending pathogen.  相似文献

Peripartum mares and neonatal foals are physiologically unstable. Although hormonal changes around the parturition have been well studied in the field of endocrinology, hematological and biochemical changes have been studied little. The purpose of this study was to examine hematological and biochemical changes in peripartum mares and neonatal foals (n = 23; heavy draft horse). The number of white and red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, mean cell volume, mean cell hemoglobin, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, platelet count in peripheral whole blood, and the concentration of glucose, nonesterified fatty acid, total cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, albumin, globulin, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase, iron, calcium, inorganic phosphate, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and chlorine in serum were measured. The main changes observed in peripartum mares suggested the following: (1) dehydration at the foaling, (2) physical stress by the foaling, (3) muscle damage by the foaling, and (4) change of energy metabolism associated with the beginning of lactation. The main changes observed in neonatal foals suggested the following: (1) dehydration (hemoconcentration) at the birth, (2) intake of colostrum, (3) beginning of urination, (4) functional change of hematopoiesis, (5) change of liver metabolism associated with the beginning of enteral nutrition, and (6) change of milk composition. This study revealed hematological and biochemical dynamics in peripartum mares and neonatal foals.  相似文献

Protein profile of the placenta expresses its function and maintenance. Any alterations can be reflected in qualitative and quantitative changes in this profile. The aim of the present study was the evaluation of protein profile in the placenta of mares suffering from the retention of foetal membranes (FMR) by two separation methods and the comparison with physiologically released tissues. Placentas from 14 healthy, heavy draft mares were collected immediately after the expulsion of newborn. Tissues after homogenization and staining with fluorescent dyes were subjected to electrophoretic as well as chromatographic separation. Electrophoretic gels were statistically analysed for the presence and abundance of examined proteins, while some proteins were identified in chromatographic fractions. Out of 248 spots detected in endometrium, 38 differed significantly between FMR and control animals, while in allantochorion, respective values reached 241 and 27 spots (p < .05). Among identified proteins that expressed higher abundance in endometrium of FMR mares than control animals were prostaglandin reductase, dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family, and placental growth factor. These proteins are involved in regulation of parturition. Additionally, the following proteins responsible for physiological activity of a cell—guanine methyl transferase, aspartyl/asparaginyl beta‐hydroxylase and GTP‐binding protein, were identified. These proteins expressed higher abundance in allantochorion of FMR mares than in controls. This preliminary study confirmed the disturbances in protein pattern between foetal membranes in FMR and healthy mares. Further qualitative and quantitative experiments are necessary to deepen our knowledge on the mechanisms of the retention of foetal membranes in mares.  相似文献

Placental retention (retained placenta [RP]) is a serious and common peripartum disease in mares, but the etiology and pathogenesis of RP still remain unclear. The alteration of cell proliferation and apoptosis is considered to be an important factor in RP. Fetal membranes and endometrial biopsies were collected from mares with RP (n = 8) and from control mares (n = 10). The proliferation and apoptosis levels in the chorionic and the endometrial epithelia were assessed by proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunostaining and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling assay, respectively. The study revealed that there was an insignificant decrease in proliferation and a significant increase in apoptosis in the chorionic epithelium from mares with RP. This result excludes a proliferation imbalance from the possible causes of RP. In the area of the nonpregnant horn of the placenta, proliferation was negatively correlated and apoptosis was positively correlated with the degree of fetomaternal anchorage. It was observed that, in all mares with placental retention, the endometrial epithelium (both luminal and glandular) showed decreased proliferation and increased apoptosis, which may indicate a delay in postpartum uterine regeneration.  相似文献

The role of oxytocin (OT) in the regulation of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) secretion during luteolysis in gilts was studied using a highly specific OT antagonist (CAP-581). In Experiment 1 gilts on Days 14 to 19 of the oestrous cycle in Latin square design were used, to determine the dose and time of application of OT and CAP. In Group I (n = 6) gilts were treated intravenously with saline or with 10, 20 and 30 IU of OT. Concentrations of the main PGF2 alpha metabolite i.e. 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) were measured in blood samples as uterine response to the treatment. Twenty IU of OT was the most effective to stimulate PGFM release and this dose was used after CAP treatment in gilts of Groups II, III and IV. Gilts of Group II (n = 3) were injected into the uterine horns (UH) with saline (5 ml/horn) or CAP (2 mg, 3 mg and 4 mg; half dose/horn) and OT was injected (i.v.) 30 min thereafter. Any of the CAP doses given into the UH affected PGFM plasma concentrations stimulated by OT. In Group III (n = 4) gilts were infused (i.v.) for 30 min with CAP (9 mg, 14 mg and 18 mg/gilt) followed by 20 IU of OT. All doses of CAP effectively inhibited OT-stimulated PGF2 alpha release, therefore 9 mg was selected for the further studies. Gilts of Group IV (n = 4) received OT 4, 6 and 8 h after CAP to define how long CAP blocks the OT receptors. Concentrations of PGFM increased after any of this period of time. Thus, we concluded that 9 mg of CAP infused every 4 h will effectively block OT receptors. In Experiment 2, gilts (n = 4) received CAP as a 30-min infusion every 4 h on Days 12-20 of the oestrous cycle. Control gilts (n = 3) were infused with saline. CAP infusions diminished the height of PGFM peaks (P < 0.05). Frequency of the PGFM (P < 0.057) and OT (P < 0.082) peaks only tended to be lower in the CAP-treated gilts. Peripheral plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4) and oestradiol-17 beta (E2) and the time of luteolysis initiation as measured by the decrease of P4 concentration were the same in CAP- and saline-treated gilts. The macroscopic studies of the ovaries in gilts revealed lack of differences between groups. We conclude that OT is involved in the secretion of luteolytic PGF2 alpha peaks but its role is limited to controlling their height and frequency. Blocking of OT receptors did not prevent luteolysis in sows.  相似文献

AIMS: To test published models for predicting time of foaling using data derived from prepartum mammary secretions and to develop a new model based on concentrations of mammary secretion constituents that accurately predicts time of foaling in Thoroughbred mares. METHODS: Concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, citrate and lactose were measured in prepartum mammary secretions of 20 Thoroughbred mares in the 2 weeks before expected date of foaling. Models to predict time of foaling were fitted to data based on absolute concentration, change in concentration, and percentage change in concentration of mammary secretion constituents in relation to actual intervals to foaling. RESULTS: Concentrations of potassium, calcium, citrate and lactose increased, and concentration of sodium decreased as foaling approached but variation between mares was large. Models to predict time of foaling based on percentage change in electrolyte concentrations were less accurate than those based on absolute concentration and change in concentration. When data from this study were fitted to two previously published models, the statistical sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of both models were lower than those originally reported. CONCLUSIONS: The use of prepartum equine mammary secretion electrolyte concentrations for prediction of time of foaling is unreliable, due to large variation in both absolute concentrations and change in concentrations between mares. Models that use a combination of mammary secretion electrolytes and physical and behavioural factors may better predict foaling than those based on mammary secretions alone.  相似文献

The characteristics of parturition and dystocia were recorded on standardized forms by foaling attendants on 8 farms for 517 spontaneous parturitions. Dystocias were classified from examination of the forms into those with malposition (involving the fetal body), malposture (involving fetal extremities), and normal position and posture in which traction was considered essential. Dystocias occurred in 58 of 517 (11.2%) parturitions and involved normal fetal position and posture (31.0%), malposition of body (22.6%), and malposture of extremities (41.4%). Other recorded frequencies were for emergence of an intact chorioallantois at the labia (2.0%), hiplock (1.2%), posterior presentation (0%), uterine torsion (0%), deformed fetal limbs *8.4%), stillbirth (1.2%), death of foal within 24 hours (1.2%), life-threatening injury to the mare (1.5%), and retained placenta (13.5%). The frequencies of a prolonged or excessive Stage 1 culminates in rupture of chorioallantois, (11.5%), deformed foal limbs (24.0%), relatively large foal (26.8%), and retained placenta (22.0%) were greater (P<0.05) for mares with dystocia than for mares without dystocia (2.6, 6.7, 7.9 and 10.5%, respectively).Ten of 14 (72%) dystocias with normal position and posture were attributable to a relatively large foal or weak maternal contractions. All of 16 malpositions of the body involved a tendency toward the dorso-pubic position (upside-down) and 31% were accompanied by malpostures of the extremities. Observations suggested that alternate standing and lying by the mare played a role in preventing and aiding in the self-correction of malpositions. Most (55%) of 24 malpostures involved retention of a front foot. The primary indicators of a problem were the absence of any fetal parts or membranes at the labia for a prolonged time after rupture of the chorioallantois (28% of dystocias) or the emergence of only one foot (34%).The interval from foal delivery to placental discharge was shorter (P<0.01) for Miniature Horses (17±3 min; n=17) than for the larger breeds (54±2 min; n=395). Five ewes were injected with two doses of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAI), lysine acetyl salicylate, at birth of their first lamb and one hour later, and five others were injected once only, at birth of their first lamb. A control group of six animals was constituted. The times needed for fetal expulsion and placental release were recorded. The peripheral plasma PgF2 alpha (as PGFM) levels were measured prepartum during the seven last days of gestation, at parturition, then 1 h, 2 h and 12 h after lambing. The results were compared among and within treatment groups. They indicate that the physiological increase in peripheral PGFM levels starts two days before lambing and that the level peaks at lambing. The normal decrease after parturition is emphasized by NSAI injections as detected 1 h and 2 h posttreatment (p < 0.01). The NSAI drug is short-acting as revealed by the lower PGFM levels in twice-treated animals 2 h after birth compared to once treated animals and the similar low levels in all three groups 12 h after birth. The fetal membranes were expelled normally in all treated and nontreated animals, but the time needed for placental expulsion in ewes injected with two doses of NSAI was longer than in controls (p < 0.05). A negative correlation (p < 0.05) was found between plasma PGFM levels measured two hours after lambing and the time needed for fetal membrane expulsion. PgF2 alpha appears to have a role in placental release in the ewe.  相似文献

Studies were undertaken to investigate the effects of oxytocin induction on prolactin release in term (Group II) and preterm (Group III) mares and to compare these effects to spontaneously foaling mares (Group I). Since physiological concentrations of prolactin in blood have not been measured in the neonatal foal, experiments were designed to monitor prolactin in the cord artery and jugular blood of the foals from all groups of mares. Although prolactin levels varied in term mares (Group I and II) during the last 11 days of pregnancy, an increase was observed between Day -6 and Day 0 (2.7 and 11.9 ng/ml respectively; P less than 0.1). The average concentration of prolactin over the last 4 days (Days -3 to 0) had increased by 40% when compared to the average concentration on Days -6, -5, and -4. These findings indicate a rising trend which appears to occur concomitantly with changes in concentrations of 2 mammary components tested, sodium and potassium. Prolactin concentrations did not significantly increase in term mares after oxytocin treatment or in spontaneously foaling mares. However, the preterm induced mares had higher prolactin concentrations during the first stage of labor (19.3 +/- 7.2 ng/ml) than prior to treatment with oxytocin (4.7 +/- 2.0 ng/ml; P less than 0.01). Levels of prolactin in all groups significantly declined by 20-min post-placental expulsion. For the first 30 min after birth, prolactin concentrations in foals from oxytocin-induced mares appeared to be 2-fold higher than those from spontaneously foaling mares. Thereafter, prolactin values declined to baseline values by 48 hrs. When comparing cord arterial plasma with cord venous plasma in each group, prolactin concentrations were similar. However, the average prolactin levels in both the cord artery and vein appeared higher (ave: 1.1 ng/ml) in Group II and III than in Group I (less than 0.5 ng/ml). From these results, the authors suggest that 1) prolactin may have a role in regulating mammary secretory products in mares just prior to parturition; 2) oxytocin may increase prolactin secretion in preterm induced mares; 3) oxytocin induction may have a short term effect to increase circulatory prolactin concentrations in neonates in utero regardless whether their dams were treated preterm or term.  相似文献

In this study, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), leptin, luteinising hormone (LH) and prolactin were analyzed in mares from late pregnancy throughout lactation (group 1, n=46) and in non-lactating mares (group 2, n=11). Plasma GH concentrations in group 1 mares during gestation and lactation were lower than in mares of group 2 (P<0.05). Highest IGF-1 levels were found in lactating mares in the week of foaling. IGF-1 concentrations decreased continuously thereafter. Plasma leptin concentrations decreased after foaling and, for 4 weeks, were lower in lactating than in non-lactating mares (P<0.05). Reduced leptin concentrations may promote feed intake and allow lactating mares to avoid an energy deficit. In group 1 mares, prolactin concentrations reached a maximum in the week of foaling and decreased rapidly thereafter. Plasma LH concentrations in group 1 mares before foaling were lower than at corresponding times in group 2 (P<0.05). LH concentrations then increased and did no longer differ from group 2 until week 2 postpartum. This increase may contribute to the resumption of cyclic ovarian activity in postpartum mares. Subsequently, LH levels in lactating mares decreased again (P<0.05). Increased IGF-1 concentrations early postpartum might contribute to ovarian stimulation while reduced IGF-1 and GH concentrations later in lactation might cause reduced stimulation. The changes in somatotrophic hormones could thus explain, at least in part, a more pronounced stimulation of ovarian function early postpartum than during the following months of lactation.  相似文献
