Context

Bark beetles are known to be associated with fungi, especially the ophiostomatoid fungi. However, very little is known about role of pine weevils, e.g., Hylobius abietis, as a vector of these fungi in Europe.

Aims

The aims of our study were to demonstrate the effectiveness of H. abietis as a vector of ophiostomatoid fungi in Poland and to identify these fungi in Scots pine seedlings damaged by weevil maturation feeding.

Methods

Insects and damaged Scots pine seedlings were collected from 21 reforestation sites in Poland. The fungi were identified based on morphology, DNA sequence comparisons for two gene regions (ITS, β-tubulin) and phylogenetic analyses.

Results

Sixteen of the ophiostomatoid species were isolated and identified. In all insect populations, Leptographium procerum was the most commonly isolated fungus (84 %). Ophiostoma quercus was also found at a relatively high frequency (16 %). Other ophiostomatoid fungi were found only rarely. Among these rarer fungi, four species, Leptographium lundbergii, Ophiostoma floccosum, Ophiostoma piliferum and Sporothrix inflata, were isolated above 3 %. L. procerum was isolated most frequently and was found in 88 % of the damaged seedlings. S. inflata was isolated from 26 %, while O. quercus occurred in 10 % of the seedlings.

Conclusion

This study confirmed that L. procerum and O. quercus were common associates of H. abietis, while others species were found inconsistently and in low numbers, indicating causal associations. H. abietis also acted as an effective vector transmitting ophiostomatoid species, especially L. procerum and S. inflata, to Scots pine seedlings.  相似文献

Context

The development of multiple trait selection indices for solid (structure) wood production in the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) breeding program requires genetic variances and covariances estimated among wood quality traits including stiffness.

Aims

Genetic control and relationships among Scots pine growth, fiber, and wood quality traits were assessed by estimating heritability, phenotypic and genetic correlation using a Scots pine full-sib family trial.

Method

Wood quality traits including clearwood and dynamic acoustic stiffness were measured using SilviScan and Hitman in a 40-year-old progeny trial and by sampling increment cores of 778 trees of 120 families. Genetic parameters were estimated using the mixed model by the ASReml software.

Results

Heritability ranged from 0.147 to 0.306 for growth, earlywood, transition wood and latewood proportion traits and from 0.260 to 0.524 for fiber dimension, wood density, MFA and stiffness traits. The highly unfavorable genetic correlation between diameter and whole core density (?0.479) and clearwood stiffness (?0.506) and dynamic acoustic stiffness (?0.382) was observed in this study.

Conclusion

The unfavorable genetic correlations between growth traits and stiffness indicate that multiple traits selection using optimal economic weights and optimal breeding strategies are recommended for the advanced Scots pine breeding program.  相似文献

? Context

An important feature of forest nursery management is the production of first-rate planting stock, which is closely connected with an adequate development of ectomycorrhizas on seedling roots.

? Aims

The aim of this study was to provide a detailed assessment of the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal diversity of European beech grown in bare-root forest nursery conditions.

? Methods

Morphological and molecular analyzes were used to identify ECM fungi, quantify fungal richness, and record differences in the relative abundance of individual taxa.

? Results

Twenty-seven different mycorrhizal fungal taxa were found in four tested nurseries. Of these 27, only 6 were present in more than one nursery. Taxa richness in individual nurseries ranged from 6 to 13, indicating that ECM colonization potential is nursery-dependent. The most frequent taxa were: Tuber sp. 1, Cadophora sp., Cenococcum geophilum agg., Hebeloma sacchariolens, and Laccaria tortilis. According to the analysis of similarity, ECM fungal communities were significantly different between nurseries (R?=?0.7741; p?<?0.0001).

? Conclusion

Beech seedlings grown in bare-root nurseries are colonized by a highly diverse suite of ECM fungi; thus, artificial inoculation of seedlings is generally not necessary in nursery practice.  相似文献

? Context

The rising demand of energy wood for heating purposes in Germany leads to concerns regarding the overexploitation of forests. A major aspect is the impact of whole-tree harvesting on long-term productivity of forest soils.

? Aims

This study aimed to analyze the effects of nutrient removal on productivity using the historically prevalent practice of litter raking. Since there is a lack of controlled whole-tree harvesting experiments in Germany, we used litter raking as a surrogate management practice entailing the removal of nutrients from forest stands.

? Methods

We used three sites with documented litter raking to analyze the effects of nutrient removal on productivity using dendroecological methods: two recent litter removal experiments in two Scots pine stands (Siegenburg and Burglengenfeld) and one oak stand (Eichhall) with documented historic litter raking. Basal area increment (BAI) and tree-ring characteristics were compared between periods with litter raking and the preceding periods for both treatment and control plots.

? Results

For the two Scots pine sites with a relatively short litter raking period, no effects of litter raking on BAI could be ascribed to nutrient removal. On the oak site with a longer history of litter utilization, the loss in BAI due to litter raking amounts to 22 % during the period with active raking and to still 17 % in the recovery period.

? Conclusions

These results contribute to the still very limited understanding about the impact of whole-tree harvesting on forest productivity in Germany by laying down an upper limit of possible effects due to nutrient removal, as nutrient loss by litter raking tends to be higher than nutrient loss by whole-tree harvesting.  相似文献

Context

Density management diagrams (DMDs) are useful for designing, displaying and evaluating alternative density management regimes for a given stand-level management objective. The inclusion of variables related to crown fire potential within DMDs has not previously been considered.

Aims

The aim of this study was to include isolines of variables related to crown fire initiation and spread in DMDs to enable identification of stand structures associated with different types of wildfire.

Methods

Biometric and fuel data from maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) stands in NW Spain were used to construct DMDs. Different surface and crown fire behaviour models were used together to estimate crown fire potential.

Results

The crown fire potential varied greatly throughout development of the maritime pine stands. Low stands were more prone to crowning. The type of crown fire was mainly determined by stand density.

Conclusion

The DMDs developed can be used to identify relationships between stand structure and crown fire potential, thus enabling the design of thinning schedules aimed at reducing the likelihood of crowning.  相似文献

Context

Families of the Gumbel (type I), Fréchet (type II) and Weibull (type III) distributions can be combined in the generalized extreme value (GEV) family of distributions. Maximum and minimum values of diameters in forest stands can be used in forest modelling, mainly to define parameters of the functions used in diameter class models as well as in some practical cases, such as modelling maximum diameters for sawing and processing purposes.

Aims

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare two extreme value distribution functions (the Gumbel and the Weibull functions) in modelling the distribution of the minimum and the maximum values of representative sets of tree diameter samples. Both of these functions were applied to the lower and upper values of the diameter distributions of the main forest species in northwest Spain: Quercus robur L., Betula pubescens Ehrh., Pinus radiata D. Don, Pinus pinaster Ait. and Pinus sylvestris L.

Methods

Parameters of the Gumbel function were estimated using the mode and the moments of the distributions, and parameters of the Weibull function were estimated using the moments method.

Results

In general, the Weibull distribution was the most suitable model for describing the maximum diameters. The mode method of the Gumbel yielded the best results for minimum diameters of birch and Monterrey pine. The Gumbel distribution, fitted by either the mode- or moments-based methods, proved more suitable than the Weibull distribution for describing the minimum diameters in maritime pine and Scots pine stands.

Conclusion

In some cases, better results were obtained with the Gumbel than the Weibull distribution for describing the distribution of extreme diameter values in forest stands in northwest Spain. This is the first example of the application of the Gumbel distribution in forest modelling.  相似文献

Context

Warmer temperatures and anthropogenic N depositions are altering soil nutrient cycles and plant nutrition worldwide and are projected to rise dramatically in the future, particularly at the high latitudes. How much will such alterations affect symbiotic organisms such as ectomycorrhizae (ECM)?

Aims

The aim was to investigate the short-term effects of warmer soil temperatures and N-enriched precipitations on roots and ECM.

Methods

A field experiment was established during 2008–2010 in two black spruce (Picea mariana) stands of the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. The ECM of 12 trees per site were counted and identified by morphotyping.

Results

After 3 years, soil heating markedly modified the proportions of vital root tips and ECM in the colder stand, while no effect of the N-enriched rain was observed on soil chemistry and consequently on roots and ECM. Density and ramification of root tips were not affected by the treatments.

Conclusion

The hypothesis that the treatments would alter the ECM was confirmed only partially in the colder stand. The type of application and amount of N supplied were unable to substantially modify in the short-term growth conditions of roots and ECM, explaining the observed results.  相似文献

Key message

Mixing sessile oak and Scots pine in central France to reduce intraspecific competition for water resources did not improve the ability of these two species to withstand severe drought during the summer.

Context

In order to reduce the impact of increasingly extreme droughts on forests, managers must adapt their practices to future climate conditions. Maintaining a greater diversity of tree species in temperate forest ecosystems is one of the recommended options.

Aims

We addressed how interactions between sessile oak and Scots pine in mixed forests in central France affect their functional response to drought.

Methods

We characterized the carbon isotope composition (δ13C) in the tree growth rings formed during wet (2001, 2007) or dry (2003, 2004) summers for each of the two species growing both in pure and in mixed stands in order to compare the effect of stand composition on variations in carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) among contrasted years.

Results

The severe drought in 2003 induced a strong decrease in Δ13C for all trees and in all stands as compared to 2001. This decrease was greater in pine than in oak. There was no significant difference between pure and mixed stands in the response of either species to drought.

Conclusion

Mixing sessile oak and Scots pine in stands in central France does not improve the ability of either species to withstand severe drought during the summer.

? Context

Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) is one of the most important Portuguese species, growing in pure stands ranging from even-aged to multi-aged structures. Current growth and yield models were developed only for even-aged, managed stands and/or for very specific regions of Portugal.

? Aims

This paper focuses on the validation of the existing size-class model PBRAVO, adapted to even-aged stands, and on the subsequent development of a single tree distance-dependent growth and yield model (PBIRROL), both in distance-independent and distance-dependent versions, for uneven-aged stands.

? Methods

The new model is composed of four modules, each with a set of sub-models for: tree variable prediction, tree volume prediction, future tree list prediction and growth projection.

? Results

The evaluation of the PBRAVO and PBIRROL models showed that the new model gives more accurate predictions. Moreover, medium-term simulations provided consistent and logical predictions.

? Conclusion

It was verified that individual tree models are more suited to simulate poorly managed uneven-aged stands than diameter distribution models. No clear superiority of distance-dependent models was found over models using just distance-independent measures of inter-tree competition.  相似文献

Key message

Silver fir transplantations along elevational gradients revealed a high diversity but no local adaptation. Populations displayed similar abilities to adapt to new environments including those due to climate change.

Context

The sustainability of forest stands depends on the ability of species and communities to adapt by combining plasticity and genetic evolution. Although well-documented at the scale of species distributions, the variability and adaptation of forest tree genetic resources are less understood at the short-distance scale.

Aims

We analysed the effects of genetic and environmental factors on the local-scale phenotypic diversity of traits related to adaptation in Abies alba. We also sought to highlight local adaptation, revealing past selection.

Methods

Six adaptive traits related to growth, phenology and survival were measured on seedlings from 57 half-sib families collected from 15 provenances and planted in a nine-site reciprocal transplant experiment distributed along three elevational gradients.

Results

Most part of the phenotypic variability was attributed to the environmental factors. Provenances and families had also significant effects on seedling performances, but the genetic variability was mostly attributed to the families. No pattern of local adaptation was observed, except in the presence of lateral branches in the driest garden.

Conclusion

The absence of local adaptation suggests a similar ability of all silver fir populations to develop in the various environments. This result provides favourable conditions for coping with the ongoing climate change without exotic resources enrichment.

Context

Taxus woodlands suffer from a lack of natural regeneration across its whole distribution range.

Aims

In Knyazhdvir Reserve in Ukraine Taxus baccata primarily competes with Abies alba. It has been assumed that in the conditions of deep shade, yews have a greater competitive advantage than firs.

Methods

To verify this hypothesis, a plot with both species growing under the canopy was established. Wood samples were taken from 20 trees of T. baccata and 20 trees of A. alba.

Results

There were no differences in the mean tree-ring width, height and age between both species. Due to a lack of spatial separation of both species, yews and firs inhabited the same area in the analysed plot. Fir seedlings (up to 0.5?m) were recorded to grow under yew saplings (above 0.5?m), but the inverse situation of yew seedlings growing under fir saplings was not seen.

Conclusion

Seedling distribution, tree-ring growth rate, possibility of growth of fir seedlings under yew saplings and greater potential growth suggested that fir was predisposed to having the competitive edge over yew. Our results may confirm the hypothesis that T. baccata has a restricted distribution because of weak competitive abilities and can exist only in habitats where faster growing species are absent. The results call into question the prevailing opinion that human influences are the principal cause for the decline of T. baccata.  相似文献

Context

Edible stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) nut is a forest product which provides the highest incomes to the owners of stone pine forests.

Aim

The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of first thinning on growth and cone production in an artificially regenerated stand in order to determine optimum intensity.

Methods

A thinning trial was installed in 2004 to compare two thinning regimes (heavy and moderate) and a control treatment. From 2004 to 2012, six inventories of forest attributes were carried out, and the cone crop was harvested annually. We evaluated the effect of thinnings on growth using repeated measures analysis of variance with a mixed model approach. With regards to cone production, we first estimated the probability of finding cones in a tree by applying a generalized mixed model and then estimated cone production by using a mixed model, including climatic variables.

Results

We found that thinning had a positive influence on tree diameter increment. Thinning increased the probability of finding cones and cone production. However, significant differences between heavy and moderate thinnings were not found.

Conclusion

We recommend early silvicultural treatments in stone pine stands to favor the development of trees and larger edible pine nut production.  相似文献

Context

Although drought is generally considered the main environmental constraint in Mediterranean environments, the ability to acclimate to and tolerate frost in early developmental stages can be a determinant for seedling survival of many Mediterranean tree species like stone pine (Pinus pinea L.).

Aims

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the developmental stage of naturally regenerated stone pine individuals on tolerance to low temperature (LT) from summer to late autumn and in spring, at a highly continental site in central Spain. Specifically, we tested to what extent the differences in tolerance are related to shoot heteroblasty.

Methods

We assessed LT tolerance of needles from individuals at three age classes (class C1: seedlings, class C2: 4- to 8-year-old saplings and class C3: >9-year-old saplings) over nine dates from summer to spring.

Results

LT tolerance displayed severe seasonal trends and differed between age classes. It usually increased with sapling age. Such differences were tightly related to heteroblasty of the shoots. Our results point to a higher LT tolerance associated with larger leaf dry mass per unit area (LMA) values. No impact of late frosts on shoot growth rates was detected during this study.

Conclusions

Developmental changes during early plant growth seem to play a role in frost tolerance of stone pine seedlings, a finding which furthers our understanding of regeneration dynamics in this species in areas with continental influence.  相似文献

? Context

Dispersal and recruitment play a critical role in determining the abundance and the spatial structure of regeneration.

? Aim

In this study, we estimated landscape scale seed dispersal using the inverse modeling method by fitting seedling counts to seed tree location and fertility in the European silver fir Abies alba Miller.

? Methods

Seed trees and seedlings from three age cohorts were counted in 30 plots on Mont Ventoux (southeastern France) at elevations from 995 to 1,605?m, where the following ecological variables were measured: elevation, slope, aspect, light availability, and tree density. We developed and fitted a dispersal model, including a new parameter, recruitment rate, which depended both on the ecological characteristics of the plots and on seed production.

? Results

Elevation was the factor that affected seedling recruitment the most, with an optimum value at around 1,200?m. Estimated A. alba seed dispersal distances were short (median values for the three cohorts, respectively, 16.4?C13.2?C19.6?m).

? Discussion

We demonstrated that including the ecological characteristics of plots and post-dispersal recruitment processes realistically reduced estimates of seed dispersal distances which are otherwise grossly over-estimated using inverse modeling procedures.  相似文献

? Context

The amount and chemistry of litterfall have been known to strongly vary among the years with important implications for ecosystem nutrient cycles, but there are few quantitative data describing such variations.

? Aims

We studied the climatic implications on the variation in litterfall and its C and N input to soil in two distinct European coniferous forests.

? Methods

Year-to-year variations in canopy litterfall were measured in a Scots pine stand (Hyytiälä, Finland) over 13 years, and a Douglas fir stand (Speulderbos, The Netherlands) over 3 years.

? Results

Important inter-annual variations in litterfall were observed in Scots pine. Litterfall was mainly driven by leaf senescence; however, premature needle fall was observed in high wind speed and early frost events. The seasonal variation in litterfall was characterized by a maximum in September in Scots pine, and by a biphasic variation pattern in Douglas fir, in May and November. Lower seasonal variations and lower annual average in litterfall N content were observed in Scots pine.

? Conclusion

Significant inter- and intra-annual variations in litterfall and chemistry and between the sites were demonstrated; and it depended on year-to-year differences in climate and extreme weather events.  相似文献

? Context

Soil temperature can limit tree growth and function, but it is often unaddressed in understanding the successional status of trees.

? Aims

We tested how soil temperature affected carbon allocation strategies of two dominant co-occurring boreal conifer species, Pinus contorta and Picea mariana.

? Methods

We measured nonstructural carbon (NSC) concentrations, biomass, and photosynthesis of dormant and actively growing 2-year-old seedlings in response to three soil temperatures (5, 10, and 20 °C) under a common ambient air temperature.

? Results

For both species, variation in carbon reserves with soil temperature was more pronounced following seedling growth than during dormancy. For both species and all organ types (roots, needles, and stems), NSC concentrations were highest when seedlings were grown at 5 than 20 °C. Mass adjusted for NSC content was negatively correlated with NSC concentration for all organ types of both species. Soil temperature had a marginally significant effect on photosynthesis of pine; seedlings grown at 10 or 20 °C acquired more carbon than seedlings grown at 5 °C. Spruce seedlings photosynthesized more when grown at 20 °C than at 5 or 10 °C.

? Conclusion

Interspecific differences in allocation of carbon may underlie the responses of P. mariana and P. contorta to cold soils and consequently their successional status.  相似文献

Context

For Central Europe, climate projections foresee an increase in temperature combined with decreasing summer precipitation, resulting in drier conditions during the growing season. This might negatively affect forest growth, especially at sites that are already water-limited, i.e., at low elevation. At higher altitudes trees might profit from increasing temperatures.

Aims

We analyzed variations in radial growth of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) along an altitudinal gradient from 400 until 1,140 m a.s.l. in the Black Forest, to assess climate responses with increasing elevation.

Methods

Climate–growth relationships were analyzed retrospectively using tree-ring and climate data. In total, we sampled stem discs of 135 trees to build 27 species- and site-specific chronologies (n fir?=?13, n spruce?=?14).

Results

Our results indicate distinct differences in climate–growth relations between fir and spruce along the gradient. Growth of high-altitude fir was positively related to temperature from January till March. Growth of low-altitude fir and spruce at all elevations was positively related to precipitation and negatively to temperature during the growing season, particularly in July. A self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index underlined summer drought sensitivity of these trees.

Conclusion

Overall, we found that climatic control of tree growth changes over altitude for fir. For spruce, a remarkable synchrony in growth variation and climate response was shown, which indicates that this species is drought sensitive at all studied elevations. In a future warmer climate, the growth of low-altitude fir and spruce along the entire studied gradient may be negatively affected in the Black Forest, if an increased evaporative demand cannot be compensated by increased water supply.  相似文献

Context

Regular mortality (or self-thinning) is an integral part of woody plant dynamics, and the mortality model is one of the most important transition functions within dynamic growth models.

Aims

The main objectives of the present study were to derive one-step stand-level mortality models for estimating the reduction in stand density with stand dominant height growth and to examine the applicability of the models in predicting regular mortality trends in even-aged natural stands and plantations.

Methods

Four model formulations based on graphical examination of the main trends in the data and on defined desired properties of the selected mathematical functions were proposed and tested in algebraic difference equation form with two datasets from pine plantations and two datasets from natural broadleaved even-aged stands.

Results

The mortality patterns of three of the datasets were characterized by reverse sigmoid curves, while the forth dataset exhibited a reverse J-shaped trajectory. The models analyzed adequately represented the density decrease trends of the data through sets of polymorphic curves with multiple asymptotes.

Conclusion

The dominant height-dependent mortality equations provide a simple and reliable approach to modeling the regular density decrease trends and can be considered for incorporation as a submodel within the framework of a dynamic Stand Density Management Diagram.  相似文献

? Context

It is assumed that global change is already affecting the composition, structure and distribution of forest ecosystems; however, detailed evidences of altitudinal and latitudinal shifts are still scarce.

? Aims

To develop a method based on National Forest Inventory (NFI) to assess spatio-temporal changes in species distributions.

? Methods

We develop an approach based on universal kriging to compare species distribution models from the different NFI cycles and regardless of the differences in the sampling schemes used. Furthermore, a confidence interval approach is used to assess significant changes in species distribution. The approach is applied to some of the southernmost populations of Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica in the Western Pyrenees over the last 40 years.

? Results

An increase of the presence of the two species in the region was observed. Scots pine distribution has shifted about 1.5 km northwards over recent decades, whereas the European beech has extended its distribution southwards by about 2 km. Furthermore, the optimum altitude for both species has risen by about 200 m. As a result, the zone in which the two species coexist has been enlarged.

? Conclusions

This approach provides a useful tool to compare NFI data from different sampling schemes, quantifying and testing significant shifts in tree species distribution over recent decades across geographical gradients.  相似文献
