An experiment was carried out to compare the effects of two compressed sward height treatments, each at two fertilizer nitrogen (N) treatments (0 and 50 kg ha−1 in spring), on the date of turnout and liveweight gain of steers grazing a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens ) sward sited on clay loam in south-west England. The sward height treatments were 6 cm all season, and 4 cm in the spring rising to 6 cm in June; these were maintained using continuously variable stocking with Hereford × Friesian steers. Cattle were turned out on average 11·5 days earlier on the 4-cm sward height compared with the 6-cm sward height treatment. Liveweight gain early in the season was lower on the 4-cm swards than on the 6-cm swards. Liveweight gain ha−1 over the whole season was similar for the two sward height treatments. Fertilizer N did not affect turnout date or liveweight gain.  相似文献

A sample of 10000 ha of grassland in seven upland districts originally surveyed in 1970–72 was re-surveyed in 1986. Forty percent of the area was above 240 m elevation, 38% had gradients above 81/2°, 29% had poor or bad drainage and 54% was classified as having difficult or severe limitations to management. Twelve percent had been reseeded within the previous 5 years and 39% within 20 years; 6% was classified as arable grassland (in rotation with crops). Thirty-four percent was usually mown, two-thirds of it for silage. In most years 72% of grassland received fertilizer N (average application 123 kg N ha−1) and 35% received organic manure; nearly 20% received neither. Older swards tended to receive lower rates of fertilizer N than reseeds, hay fields and grazed fields less than silage fields, and fields on beef/sheep farms less than those on dairy farms. The proportion of sown species in swards averaged 35%, of which Lolium perenne accounted for 23%. A good contribution of Trifolium repens was recorded in 15% of the grassland. Herb species were recorded in 30% of the grassland, mostly in situations with low fertilizer N under hay or grazing. Agrostis spp., Poa spp., Holcus lanatus and Festuca rubra were the main unsown grasses. The average contribution of L. perenne had increased since 1970–72; it was also present in two-thirds of the area from which it was absent in 1970–72, whilst the contribution of T. repens had decreased. The incidence of Cirsium arvense and Ranunculus spp. had also decreased, whilst that of Pteridium aquilinum had increased.  相似文献

The productivity of permanent swards of mixed species composition was compared with that of sown Lolium perenne , cv. Melle at five fertilizer-N rates (0, 150, 300, 450 and 900 kg N ha−1) and with L. perenne/Trifolium repens , cv. Grasslands Huia at 0 kg N ha−1. The investigation was conducted under two cutting frequencies at sixteen sites in England and Wales, representing a range of grassland environments.
Annual total herbage dry matter (DM) production from both permanent and reseeded swards increased with successive increments of fertilizer-N up to 450 kg N ha−1. Herbage DM production from reseeded swards in the first year after sowing was signficantly higher than from the permanent swards, at all fertilizer-N treatments. In subsequent years the production advantage of the L. perenne reseeds was maintained only at the higher N rates, though sown L. perenne/T. repens was the most productive sward type at 0 N. Average differences in modified acid-detergent fibre suggested small advantages in herbage quality to the reseeded swards.
It is concluded that, while reseeded swards are more productive in the year after sowing, many permanent swards are capable of high levels of production and that reseeding to a L. perenne sward cannot always be justified, particularly for grassland receiving low or moderate inputs of fertilizer-N.  相似文献

Forty hill farms in Northern Ireland were surveyed to obtain information on stocking rates and output and to identify factors affecting output. The mean farm area of 194 ha was composed of 155 ha hill land and 39 ha inbye land with a mean stocking rate of 0–7 cow-equivalents ha−1.
On the average farm most of the grassland (88%) was over 20 years old. The preferred species content of the swards averaged 22% over the whole farm and 42% in cut swards. This latter result may be attributed to the relatively high level of fertilizer N applied to these swards (131 kg ha−1) compared to the mean application rate over the whole farm of only 29 kg N ha−1 and 93 kg ha−1 applied to the inbye land.
Output data calculated as utilized metabolizable energy (UME) per unit area for the whole farm and separately for hill and inbye components showed that although only 21% of the farm area was inbye land almost half the annual total metabolizable energy requirements of stock had to be met by grazing inbye. The capacity of herbage to meet stock energy demands was much lower on the hill with supplementary feed having to be provided over the winter.
Calculated output from inbye land was 39 GJ ha−1 compared to 7 GJ ha−1 from the hill and 15 GJ ha−1 from the whole farm. UME output of the whole farm was negatively correlated with farm size (r=−0 55) and positively correlated with stocking rate (r = 0 89), applied N level (r = 0 63)  相似文献

A long-term field grazing experiment was begun in 1982 to examine the impact of efficient field drainage on herbage and animal production from swards on an impermeable clay loam in the south-west of England. Drained and undrained lysimeter plots (each of 1 ha) were established on the existing permanent sward and received annual applications of fertilizer N of 200 or 400 kg ha−1. Similar plots were initially ploughed and reseeded with Lolium perenne (cv. Melle), and received fertilizer N at an annual rate of 400 kg ha−1. All plots were continuously stocked by beef cattle and stock numbers were adjusted to maintain a constant sward height and to avoid poaching damage. Results for the first 5 years show that the benefits from drainage were modest and, for beef production, unlikely to pay for its costs over the shorter term. The main benefit was in spring when herbage dry matter yield was 11% greater on the drained plots, but with no significant interaction with fertilizer N level or sward type. This benefit was reduced to 3% on an annual basis, due to the effect of the larger soil water deficits sustained by the drained swards in mid-season. Drainage increased the annual liveweight gain per ha by the grazing cattle by 11%. Possible mechanisms accounting for these effects are discussed in relation to the influences of seasonal patterns of weather.  相似文献

Yields of grass were measured on three dairy farms in 1981. Farm 1, on free-draining loamy soil over chalk, produced 10.3 t DM ha−1 using 336 kg N ha−1. Farm 2, on poorly-drained loam over Oxford clay, produced 12.8 t DM ha−1 using 354 kg N ha−1. Farm 3, on loam over clay with some free-draining sandy loam, produced 9.5 t DM ha−1 with 169 kg N ha−1. Allowing for differences in soil nitrogen and summer rainfall these yields were quite close to expectations from experimental results, despite considerable poaching damage to some swards.
Animal production records were kept and all livestock were weighed every 6 months, so as to calculate the utilized metabolizable energy (UME) output from grassland on each farm. These were 73, 62 and 59 GJ ha−1 on farms 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
The UME output, expressed as a proportion of the yield of grass (converted to ME), was taken as the 'efficiency of utilization' of grass. This was 70% on farm 1,44% on farm 2 and 58% on farm 3. Results are presented separately for the summer and winter 6 months. Utilization by grazing appeared to be markedly reduced under very wet soil conditions. Major losses occurred in the conservation of grass.
The results begin to establish a valuable base of data from commercial farms.  相似文献

The use of sward height as a criterion for determining the time and extent of stocking-rate changes on continuously grazed swards was investigated over a 2-year period (1985–86) in a sheep production experiment. Swards of three contrasting perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties were established with and without Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) at an upland site (310–363 m) in mid-Wales. From spring (late April) until weaning (mid-July) the pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and Suffolk cross lambs. During this period sward heights of 4 ± 0.5 cm were obtained and maintained by regular adjustment of animal number on individual paddocks. Grass-only swards received 160 and 200 kg N ha−1 and the grass clover swards were given 80 and 75 kg N ha−1 in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
Differences were observed between the treatments in sward height profiles over the season necessitating contrasting adjustments to stocking rates. Mean stocking rate necessary on early flowering Aurora (22 6 ewes ha−1) was respectively 27% and 17% higher than on late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) ryegrasses; mean stocking rate on grass-only swards was 19% higher than on the grass-clover pastures.
It is concluded that sward height is a useful criterion on which to make adjustments to stocking rates to compare the potential performance of contrasting swards, under continuous grazing. The infrequent adjustments required to maintain a constant sward height, especially on the late flowering diploid perennial ryegrass variety on which many upland pastures are based, suggest that the criterion of sward height could be successfully employed on farms as an aid to efficient grazing management.  相似文献

Grassland in England and Wales accounts for nearly 60% of the enclosed agricultural land and approximately 50% is at least 20 years old. Botanical composition, especially amongst older grassland, is extremely variable.
A survey of 502 grassland farms was conducted in the 1970s. Factors affecting botanical composition of individual fields have been investigated using correlation and regression analyses and swards of similar botanical composition grouped using cluster analysis. Lolium perenne, Agrostis spp. and Holcus lanatus were numerically the most important species, contributing, on average, 35%. 21% and 10%, respectively. Most older swards contained Lolium perenne and Agrostis spp. in varying proportions depending on drainage, soil fertility and management. Swards containing a significant proportion of Trifolium repens were associated with adequate drainage, good soil nutrient status, low inputs of fertilizer nitrogen and hard grazing. Of the other common species Holcus lanatus was associated with poor drainage, low soil fertility, hay cutting, short-season grazing and low fertilizer N. Festuca rubra was mainly in older swards, at higher elevations and with low fertilizer N but heavy stocking. Swards containing Rumex spp., Poa trivialis and other sown grasses were associated with mowing together with reasonably high soil fertility.  相似文献

The concentration of mineral elements in herbage from permanent swards of mixed species composition (predominantly Agrostis spp., Holcus lanatus, Festuca rubra, Lolium perenne, Poa spp., etc.) was compared with that from sown perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) at two fertilizer rates (0 and 300kg N ha−1 year−1, both with P and K) and with L. perennel Trifolium repens (at 0 N with P and K). The investigation was conducted over four years at sixteen contrasting sites in England and Wales. Herbage samples for mineral analysis were taken at first and fourth harvests (May and August) each year from plots under 4-weekly cutting. There was a wide degree of variation between sites, particularly for concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na and all trace elements analysed. Herbage from L. perenne reseeds had significantly higher concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Co and S, but K, Mo, Zn, Cu and P were generally lower than in the permanent swards. L. perennel T. repens swards had the highest concentration of major cations, but trace element levels were generally intermediate between those for 0 N permanent and L. perenne swards. Fertilizer N reduced concentrations of Ca, Mn, Mo and S, and increased Mg, Na and Zn, with no consistent effects on K, Co and Cu. Herbage at harvest 4, compared with harvest 1, had higher Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Zn and S. Permanent and L. perenne swards responded similarly to fertilizer N and between harvest dates. Results are discussed in relation to previous reports of botanical and fertilizer effects on mineral concentrations, and the mineral requirements of livestock. Changes in mineral concentration resulting from reseeding permanent swards are considered unlikely to increase mineral-related livestock disorders, and in many cases could be beneficial, though problems might arise on sites where some elements, e.g. Cu and Mg, are low.  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

Applications of N fertilizer (0.40, 80, 120 and 240 kg N ha−1 year−1 in dressings of 40 or 80 kg N ha−1) were made to a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne L. Trifolium repens L.) pasture growing on a humus iron podzol reclaimed from heather ( Calluna vulgaris L.) moor in 1982 and 1983. Where no N was applied, estimates of Ni fixation and mineralization were almost equal, being approximately 50 kg N ha−1 year−1 from each source. Apparent efficiencies of fertilizer use were generally low; for each dressing they ranged between –0·7 and 25·5 kg dry matter (DM)kgN−1. Also, responses to N fertilizer were affected by previous dressings. The net N recovery in harvested herbage from application of 120 kg N ha−1 year−1 was 30 kg N ha−1 year−1.  相似文献

Eight field-plot experiments were carried out on established grassland swards between 1984 and 1988 to examine the effects of date and rate of application of calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) on herbage dry matter (DM) yield and apparent efficiency of nitrogen (N) use at first-cut silage.
CAN application significantly increased ( P <0 ·001) the mean yields of herbage and N uptakes by herbage in all experiments. Herbage yields were similar ( P > 0·05) with N rates of 100 kg ha−1, 125 kg ha−1 or 150 kg ha−1 in five experiments but in the other three there were increases above 100 kg ha−1. Date of N application had a significant effect on DM yield in three experiments; this effect was inconsistent for both single and split dressings. Lower production was associated with reduced uptake of N, a trend that primarily reflected lower DM yields and not wide herbage N content variation.
It is concluded that selection of the date on which to apply fertilizer N in early spring to obtain optimum herbage yields at first-cut silage often required little precision. The use of fertilizer N rates >100 kg ha−1 should be questioned where there are likely to be appreciable quantities of available N derived from non-fertilizer sources.  相似文献

Records of grassland productivity were kept for 2 years on 136 lowland dairy farms and 131 lowland beef farms. The grassland on each farm was classified according to the proportion of sown (preferred) species. The farms were then ranked on this basis and divided into quarters:
On dairy farms the lowest quarter had 31% sown species and utilized metabolizable energy (UME) output from grass of 40.8 GJ ha−1, whereas the highest quarter had 70% sown species and UME output of 45.6 GJ ha−1. Dairy farmers in the lowest quarter used least fertilizer N and differences in output were no greater than would be expected from differences in N input. On beef farms the lowest quarter had 28% sown species and UME output of 32.3 GJ ha−1, and the highest quarter had 63% sown species and UME output of 45.9 GJ ha−1On these farms differences in fertilizer N could not completely account for differences in output.
It is concluded that on beef farms botanical composition of grassland is a good indicator of its productivity but is not necessarily a prime cause of differences in output. On dairy farms there is little evidence of a direct benefit resulting from a high proportion of sown species. On such farms the need for deliberate manipulation of the botanical composition of grassland by reseeding or chemical means is questioned.  相似文献

The expected reduction in the use of fertilizer nitrogen (N) on grassland in the Netherlands has led to renewed interest in white clover. Therefore, the performance of a newly sown perennial ryegrass/white clover sward on clay soil was assessed during 4 consecutive years. The experiment consisted of all combinations of two defoliation systems, i.e. one or two silage cuts per year (S1, S2), spring N application rate, i.e. 0 or 50 kg ha−1 year−1 (N0, N50), and the management system, i.e. rotational grazing and cutting, or cutting only (RGC, CO). The overall mean white clover cover was 30%. All treatments affected white clover cover, which was 8% higher with S2 than with S1, 6% higher with N0 than with N50 and 12% higher with CO than with RGC. The overall mean annual dry-matter (DM) yield (13·1 t ha−1 year−1) was significantly affected only by the management system: in two relatively wetter years, the annual DM yield was 1·19 t ha−1 higher with RGC than with CO, whereas there was no difference in two relatively drier years. Nitrogen application increased the DM yield in the first cut by 7·0 kg kg−1 N applied, but had no significant effect on the annual DM yield. Herbage quality was not affected by the experimental treatments. The average in vitro organic matter digestibility was 0.801, and the average crude protein content was 193 g kg−1 DM. With the expected reduction in the use of fertilizer N, perennial ryegrass/white clover swards should be seriously considered as an alternative option to perennial ryegrass swards on these clay soils.  相似文献

Management treatments were applied to an established ryegrass/white clover sward with the aim of producing differences in clover content. The treatments were: mowing (M) with no fertilizer N (intended to give high clover), grazing by cattle (C) with no fertilizer N (medium clover) and grazing by sheep (S) with 300 kg N ha−1 applied (low clover). Following treatments significant differences ( P < 0.001) were observed, with M, C and S containing respectively. 237, 81 and 3 kg DM ha−1 of live clover. Treatment M swards had fewer ryegrass tillers but greater numbers of clover growing points than did treatment S, with values being intermediate on treatment C. Following overwintering most of the differences in the clover component between treatments C and M were lost, but those on treatment S still persisted. Management can be used to manipulate the botanical composition of ryegrass/white clover swards, but these changes may be only transient.  相似文献

A 1-year grazing experiment with dairy cows is described in which the milk yield and herbage intake from a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass alone receiving fertilizer N at an annual rate of 360 kg ha−1 were compared with those from a ryegrass-white clover var. Blanca sward given a total N application of 180 kg ha−1. Both treatments gave virtually the same total milk yield of about 12500 kg ha−1 over a 20-week grazing season.  相似文献

Relative sheep production from Aurora (very early flowering), Mellra (late-flowering tetraploid) and Aberystwyth S23 (late flowering) perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties was compared during harvest years 4-6 (1988-90) as grass only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover (75 kg N ha −1 in 1988, 0 kg N ha−1 in 1989 and 1990) at Bronydd Mawr Research Centre (310-363 m) in mid-Wales. The pastures were continuously stocked with Beulah Speckled Face ewes and their Suffolk cross lambs from spring to mid-July. From late July to early November only the weaned lambs grazed the swards.
Mean (1988-90) total annual lamb production per hectare from Aurora and Meltra was 70% and 16% more than that from S23. However, the difference between both varieties and S23 was much greater as grass/clover (Aberystwyth S184 small-leaved type) than as grass-only swards. Differences between the grasses in individual lamb growth rates were most pronounced during the post-weaning period, when that on Meltra was 38% and 23% more than on Aurora and S23 respectively.
Mean annual lamb output from grass/clover swards was only 70% of that from grass-only swards during the 2 years when the former swards received no fertilizer N. Averaged over the 3 years (1988-90) individual lamb liveweight gain post weaning was 38% higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards.
The results are discussed in relation to those for the first 3 harvest years (1985-87). It is concluded that, although Aurora was less persistent than both late-flowering varieties, its superiority in providing an average of 29% more lamb output than S23 during the critical spring period (up to early June) would be of considerable practical significance in upland sheep systems, as would be the overall superiority of the tetraploid Meltra over S23.  相似文献

The influence of N in slurry or in mineral fertilizers on herbage yield and nitrogen fixation by white clover grown in mixed swards was investigated. Two levels of N in cattle slurry were compared with a range of mineral N fertilization. The percentage of N derived from symbiosis (% Nsym) was measured by the 15N-isotope dilution method. The measurements were made in spring 1987 in two 4-year-old field trials, and included two out of five harvests.
The % Nsym was approximately 90% without N fertilization. It decreased in response to both mineral N and N in slurry but did not fall below 63%. The sum of two harvests revealed that 51·2 kg N ha−1 were fixed in the absence of N fertilization. With 75 kg mineral N ha−1 or 50 m3 cattle slurry ha−1, the yield of fixed N decreased to 17·2 and 24·9 kg ha−1, respectively. When compared on the basis of the fertilizer effect on dry matter yield and N concentration of perennial ryegrass, the decrease in yield of N fixed due to treatment with cattle slurry was less than that due to mineral N fertilizer. This was owing to the smaller extent of the depression in the proportion of white clover in the sward when the same amount of N was applied in cattle slurry, as compared with mineral fertilizer, although % Nsym responded similarly to both types of N fertilization.  相似文献

Herbage growth was measured in two contrasting years on five farms representing a range of soil types. On fields cut for conservation in 1982 DM production varied between farms from 12.3 tha-1 to 14.1 tha-1 in line with fertilizer N levels, which ranged from 220 to 333 kg ha-1. In 1983 production was from 10.3 tha-1 to 12.3 tha-1; this again corresponded with fertilizer N, except on farm B which had the shallowest soils. On fields used for grazing all farmers used rotational management. Herbage accumulation was measured by trimming to 25 mm and harvesting after 4 weeks. As on conservation fields, herbage accumulation was generally greater on farms using more N, at least up to 300 kg ha-1.
In 1982 growth consistently exceeded predictions based on plot experiments. In 1983 growth was on average less than predicted on grazing fields but slightly more than predicted on cutting fields-We conclude that such predictions of annual production are a valuable aid to farm planning, and need not be reduced to allow for on-farm conditions, although they are least good at low levels of N. Predictions of individual cuts were not satisfactory, with a strong tendency to overestimate first cut and underestimate second cut.
There was no indication that annual herbage production was less on badly drained than on well drained soils. Indeed, in the dry summer of 1983 badly drained land appeared to have an advantage, despite considerable poaching damage in the spring. Furthermore, there was no evidence that production was deficient on swards dominated by Holcus and Agrostis spp.  相似文献
