Immunization against cobra venom using Mucuna pruriens derived serum immunoglobulins was carried out in a mouse model. The neutralizing ability of circulating antibodies was assessed by challenging the immunized mice with a minimum lethal dose of purified venom after 4, 24, 72 and 168 h. The single injection of the antibody preparation produced a high and sustained immune response with high survival rates of treated animals.

The effect of the aqueous leaf and seed extracts of Phyllanthus amarus at oral dose of 150, 300 and 600 mg/kg was investigated for their antidiabetic and anti-lipidemic potentials. The extract produced a dose-dependent decrease in the fasting plasma glucose and cholesterol, and reduction in weights in treated mice. The results suggest that the extract could be enhancing peripheral utilization of glucose but the mechanisms on how this works remain unclear.

The antidiarrhoeal activity of the methanol extract of the dried seeds of Strychnos potatorum (MESP) has been evaluated out in rats using different models (castor oil-induced diarrhoea, effects on gastrointestinal motility and on PGE(2)-induced gastric enteropooling. MESP (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly (P<0.001) inhibited the frequency of defaecation and reduced the wetness of faecal droppings in castor oil-induced diarrhoea, decreased the propulsion of charcoal meal through the gastrointestinal tract, and also reduced the PGE(2)-induced enteropooling.

Garlic has been well known for its protective effects against cardiovascular disease. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of garlic on the vascular reactivity of thoracic aorta from streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats was investigated in the presence and absence of endothelium. Although, 8-weeks of treatment with garlic extract had no significant effect on the concentration of serum glucose, but it significantly attenuated the abnormality in vascular reactivity to noradrenaline (NA) and acetylcholine (Ach). In addition, the endothelium-independent relaxation response to isosorbide dinitrate (ISD) was not affected by diabetes or garlic treatment. The results suggest that garlic treatment of STZ-diabetic rats can prevent the development of abnormal contractility through an endothelium-dependent and -independent mechanism.

Leandra lacunosa, popularly known as "erva-do-jabuti", is used in Brazilian folkloric medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Based on this traditional indication, the aim of this work was to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of L. lacunosa aerial parts (LLH) in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Chromatographic fractionation of LLH was also carried out by several techniques, affording isolation of the following major compounds: ursolic acid (1), kaempferol (2), luteolin (3), and quercetin (4). The oral administration of LLH (500 mg/kg) in normal rats caused a significant reduction of 24.7% (P<0.05) in the blood glucose levels after 2 h of treatment, while the administration of chlorpropamide (20 mg/kg, p.o.) led to a reduction of 40.2% (P<0.01). After oral administration of glucose (10 g/kg, p.o.), LLH (500 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited the increase in blood glucose levels compared with the negative control group. The oral treatment with LLH (500 mg/kg) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats significantly reduced the blood glucose levels in 47.8% after 4 h of treatment, while chlorpropamide resulted in a significant reduction of 71.7% in the 4th hour. Our results showed that LLH, displays hypoglycemic activity, which may be related to the effect of the major compounds identified in the crude extract. This study seems to provide biological evidence for the folkloric use of L. lacunosa in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Embelia ribes (common name, Vidanga) is extensively used in traditional system of medicine for treatment of various disorders. It is described in Ayurveda, as a powerful anthelmintic, antifertility and antihyperlipidemic agent. The present study was undertaken to investigate modulatory effect of 6 weeks' chronic oral administration of E. ribes ethanolic extract on diabetes mellitus induced by a diabetogen, streptozotocin (STZ) with special reference to changes in glucose levels, glycated haemoglobin status and cardiac toxicity. STZ treatment (40 mg/kg iv) resulted in significant increase in blood glucose levels, glycated haemoglobin levels, heart rate (HR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP). Oral administration of E. ribes ethanolic extract in dose of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg significantly reduced the levels of blood glucose, glycated haemoglobin, heart rate (HR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) in animals when compared with diabetic rats.

This present study was undertaken to examine treating effects of St. John's Wort (SJW) extract on nociceptive perception of STZ-diabetic animals based on its potential antidiabetic and antinociceptive activities. One week administrations of SJW extract (125 and 250 mg/kg) induced significant decrease in high blood glucose levels of three weeks STZ-diabetic rats and improved their dysregulated metabolic parameters. In addition, SJW extract treatment caused restoration in the mechanical hyperalgesia of diabetic animals. These findings provide a rationale for the traditional use of SJW against diabetes and display the potential of this plant as a new drug candidate/source for the treatment of diabetic pain.

The effects of 50% ethanolic extract of the bark Terminalia arjuna and tannins isolated from the bark were studied for wound healing activity in incision and excision wound models, after oral or topical application in form of a hydrogel. The findings revealed a statistically significant increase in the tensile strength of the incision wounds and increase in the percent reduction in wound size of excision wounds as compared to control. However, the topical treatment with tannins was found to be superior in both incision and excision wound studies. The estimated increase in hydroxyproline content of the granulation tissue of the excision wounds indicated rapid collagen turnover thus, leading to rapid healing of the wounds.

Radix scutellariae was used alone or in combination with other medicinal herbs in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China. At present, the pharmacokinetics of baicalin in type 2 diabetic rats following oral administration of Radix scutellariae extract was investigated. The results showed that the pharmacokinetics (especially AUC) of baicalin in type 2 diabetic rats after oral administration of Radix scutellariae extract was remarkably different from that in normal rats. Then the mechanism which resulted in the increased AUC of baicalin in diabetic rats was investigated from system clearance and presystemic metabolism. And it was found that the increased AUC of baicalin in diabetic rats at least partly resulted from higher production of baicalein in the intestinal tract of type 2 diabetic rats. Moreover, the activity of β-glucuronidase in intestinal mucosa of type 2 diabetic rats was demonstrated to be higher than that in normal rats, which confirmed the results above. In conclusion, the pharmacokinetic behavior of baicalin was significantly altered in type 2 diabetic rats after orally administrated Radix scutellariae extract, which may partly result from the increased activity of intestinal β-glucuronidase under the pathological state of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
