Horses in a riding stable sporadically excreted Salmonella agona, S anatum, and S newington in the feces. The three serotypes were isolated from apparently normal horses. The horses were sampled (the number sampled varied between 10 and 21) six times throughout a 13-month period. The greatest percentage of the horses (12 of 19, or 63%) were found to be excreting salmonella in September. Among the 12 horses excreting salmonella during this month, 8 (67%) were found to be excreting S agona.  相似文献

Six horses with dysphagia (attributable to botulism, glossitis, or guttural pouch mycosis) were given a commercially available liquid diet as the sole source of nutrition. Seven horses with hypophagia caused by severe bacterial pleuropneumonia or peritonitis were given the liquid diet to supplement food consumed voluntarily. The liquid diet was administered through a nasogastric tube 2 or 3 times daily. Body weight did not change significantly, and pertinent laboratory values remained at satisfactory concentrations throughout the feeding period. Serious complications were not encountered. Three horses developed loose, low-volume feces, but did not require treatment.  相似文献

Four horses from the same farm developed clinical signs of botulism during the winter months; three of these horses died. One horse survived an initial attack and recovered over a three-week period, but died during a second attack. The horse that survived took six weeks to recover. Clinical and postmortem examination ruled out other causes of disease. Confirmation of the diagnosis was made by isolation of Clostridium botulinum type C toxin from the dirt in the bottom of an oak feedtrough used by all horses, and from the colonic contents of one of the horses that died. To our knowledge, this is the second case of C. botulinum type C intoxication reported in horses in North America. In both cases, soil and sand near aquatic environments were identified as the source of toxin.  相似文献

The scavenging of superoxide radicals by endogenous and therapeutically administered superoxide dismutases may prevent superoxide-mediated oxidative stress leading to lipid peroxidation, membrane lysis, and cell death in a wide variety of normal and pathologic states. Simple inorganic manganous salts such as MnCl2 also have superoxide dismutase-like activity and are extremely inexpensive, compared with enzymatic superoxide dismutase preparations. In this study, we explored the use of Mn salts as antioxidant drugs. We used the percentage of inhibition of nitroblue tetrazolium reduction by superoxide as a measure of the amount of superoxide dismutase-like activity. We found concentration-related increases in superoxide scavenging activity in simple buffer solutions upon addition of 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 microM MnSO4. To determine whether Mn salts can inhibit oxidative damage in tissues, we used an in vitro model of lipid peroxidation in ischemic and reoxygenated rat liver slices. Concentrations of 10, 100, and 1000 mumoles MnCl2/L of buffer significantly decreased indicators of lipid peroxidation believed to be initiated by intracellular superoxide. We then determined the effectiveness of MnCl2 as a superoxide scavenger in conscious horses by measuring the superoxide scavenging ability of equine plasma before and during intravenous infusions of 1.0 L volumes of 0.9% saline solution containing 0, 12.5, or 25 mM MnCl2. Plasma Mn concentrations, which were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, increased as a function of time and dose. Intravenously administered MnCl2 concomitantly produced dose-related increases in superoxide scavenging ability of equine plasma at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after the onset of infusion, compared with preinfusion control values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the potential use of dried cassava pulp (DCP) with reference to productive performance, nutrient digestibility, egg quality, egg yolk cholesterol, cecal microbial populations, and volatile fatty acids production in laying hens. In experiment 1, a total of 48 laying hens (Isa Brown) were placed in individual cages and assigned randomly to one of 6 dietary treatment groups consisting of a control and 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% DCP for 10 d. Feeding laying hens with diets containing up to 20% DCP did not affect the dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) digestibility and nitrogen (N) retention (P > 0.05). In experiment 2, a total of 288 laying hens (Isa Brown) were randomly distributed to 6 dietary groups (one control and 5 DCP: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25%) for 12 wk. The results show that diets containing up to 20% DCP had no significant effects on productive performance or egg quality (P > 0.05). The inclusion of DCP at levels of 20 to 25% showed a positive effect on decreased egg yolk cholesterol (P < 0.05). In addition, DCP also increased the cecal Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium populations, acetic acid, and propionic acid production. In conclusion, DCP can be used as part of the energy source in laying hen diets at up to 20% inclusion, without showing negative effects on productive performance, nutrient digestibility, and egg quality. Feeding DCP can potentially modulate egg yolk cholesterol and cecal microbial populations and alter volatile fatty acids production.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate alfalfa meal in the diet of turkeys aged between 1 d and 4 weeks. Turkeys were fed on diets containing 0, 5, 10 or 15% alfalfa meal from two sources. By adding increments of 5% alfalfa meal containing 20 or 17% protein in place of 4.0% ground yellow corn and 1.0% dehulled soybean meal, food efficiencies were decreased by 2.3 and 3.1%, respectively. Body weights decreased and food consumptions increased in a linear manner.

Two additional experiments were conducted to determine the effects of adding alfalfa meal to diets of turkeys aged between 4 and 8 weeks. Adding 5% alfalfa meal containing 17% protein to the diet did not affect the average body weight gain but food consumption was increased by 3.4% and the efficiency of food utilisation decreased by 3.0%.

To produce the efficiencies of food utilisation in the turkeys as observed in this study, the alfalfa meals containing 20 and 17% protein would be expected to contain about 1870 and 1320 kcal ME/kg (7.82 and 5.52 MJ/kg) respectively.  相似文献

Feather pecking is still a behavioral problem in laying hen flocks, resulting in impaired welfare and economic losses. Environment enrichment, e.g., providing access to litter, to increase foraging behavior in laying hens has been shown to decrease feather pecking. This study investigated the effect of spreading crushed mussel shells (particle size 10 to 20 mm) in the litter area as an environment enrichment and source of calcium for layers receiving a commercial feed and for layers given a feed with 40% less calcium. These treatments were compared with a control involving hens given the commercial feed, but no mussel shells in the litter. The study included 900 Dekalb White layers housed in a single-tier floor system during a production cycle (20 to 72 wk of age). The mussel shells were consumed to a lower extent than predicted, resulting in calcium deficiency in hens fed the low-calcium diet. This in turn was evident as increased degree of keel bone deviations and lower eggshell breaking strength. Daily addition of crushed mussel shells to the litter for laying hens on a balanced or calcium-deficient diets did not generate any positive effects on bird feather cover, eggshell quality, production performance, or fearfulness. Hence, with the particle size of mussel shells used in this study, there was no indication of improved welfare due to environment enrichment.  相似文献

The efficacy of using calcium carbonate as an osmolar control treatment for acid-base studies in horses receiving alkalizing compounds was evaluated. Six mares were nasogastrically intubated with isomolar quantities of sodium or calcium as sodium bicarbonate or calcium carbonate or with water during three treatment periods. Doses of the carbonic acid salts were 500 mg/kg sodium bicarbonate mixed with 4 L of distilled water (positive control) and 595 mg/kg calcium carbonate mixed with 2 L of distilled water to yield isoosmolar treatments. Four liters of distilled water served as the negative control. Jugular venous blood samples were drawn before intubation and at hourly intervals for 6 h after intubation. The serum electrolytes Na+ and K+, blood pH, and HCO3- were determined. The sodium bicarbonate treatment increased blood pH and HCO3- (P < 0.01) above both the water and CaCO3 treatments. No differences (P > 0.05) were found between the water and CaCO3 treatments. These data indicate that calcium carbonate may serve as a suitable osmolar control treatment for studying the effects of treatments that affect acid-base status of horses.  相似文献

Five adult horses with ventricular extra systoles (VES) and 2 with ventricular tachycardia (VT) refractory to treatment with rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, lidocaine, or procainamide were treated with phenytoin sodium p.o. q12h. The starting dosage of phenytoin was 20 or 22 mg/kg body weight (BW) q12h, and the maintenance dosage varied from 8 to 17 mg/kg BW q12h. The mean +/- standard deviation therapeutic blood concentration of total phenytoin was 8.8 +/- 2.1 mg/L, and the mean concentration of free phenytoin of 2.5 +/- 0.5 mg/L was relatively constant at a range of 24 to 29% of the total phenytoin concentration. In all horses, both VES and VT were abolished after treatment with phenytoin. On the basis of the results of this clinical study, the authors propose an initial dose of 20 mg/kg BW q12h for the first 3 or 4 dosages, followed by a maintenance dose of 10 to 15 mg/kg BW q12h. Phenytoin plasma concentrations should be monitored during therapy. High plasma concentrations were associated with adverse effects such as recumbency and excitement. In this study, which included a limited number of diverse patients, phenytoin sodium appeared to be an inexpensive and effective treatment for persistent VES or VT in cases where conventional treatment had failed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical findings in horses with small intestinal strangulation through mesenteric rents, and to determine the recurrence and survival rates after surgery. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 15 horses with small intestinal obstruction via a mesenteric rent. PROCEDURE: Medical records of horses with obstruction of the small intestine via a mesenteric rent between January 1990 and December 1997 were reviewed. The signalment, history, initial physical examination findings, results of abdominocentesis, and clinical laboratory values were recorded. Surgical findings, including location of the mesenteric rent and surgical procedure performed, were recorded. Short- and long-term survival rates were calculated. RESULTS: Most mesenteric rents were located in the mesentery of the small intestine (13 horses). Two horses had multiple mesenteric defects. Seven horses were euthanatized at surgery because of an inability to reduce the entrapped intestine (3 horses), uncontrollable hemorrhage (2), inability to close the rent (1), and the amount of compromised intestine involved (1). Seven horses required intestinal resection and anastomosis. The median length of intestine resected was 2.6 m (range, 0.6 to 4.5 m). The mesenteric rents created during resection were not closed in 2 horses. One of these 2 horses subsequently developed a strangulating obstruction through the open rent. Seven of 15 horses in our study were discharged from the hospital (i.e., short-term survival rate of 47% [7/15]). Long-term follow-up information was available for 5 of the 7 horses (follow-up duration of 5 months to 9 years), of which 2 died as a result of colic, and 1 horse was euthanatized because of severe arthritis (i.e., long-term survival rate of 40% [2/5]). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Inability to reduce the intestinal obstruction, severe hemorrhage from the mesentery, and the length of intestine involved are the main factors that decrease survival rates in horses with small intestinal strangulation caused by mesenteric rents.  相似文献

Currently ground limestone and oyster shell are the common sources of calcium for laying hens. Processed whelk (Buccinum undatum) shell contains approximately 34.8% calcium, very similar to the 38% value for commercial oyster shell and ground limestone. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding whelk shells to laying hens on performance, egg and bone quality, and calcium balance. White Leghorn hens were fed a basal diet and either one-third large particle oyster shell (>1.4-4 mm) + two-thirds ground limestone (OS/GL), one-third large particle whelk shells (>1.4-4 mm) + two-thirds ground whelk (W/GW), 100% ground limestone (GL), or 100% ground whelk shells (GW) starting at 20 wk of age for 14 28 d periods. Production data were comparable among calcium sources for the first 8 periods of production. During periods 9 to 14, feed consumption for hens fed GW was lower (P < 0.05) than for hens fed OS/GL. For periods 12 to 14, hens fed W/GW consumed less feed (P < 0.05) than those fed OS/GL and GL. Body weights were less (P < 0.05) for hens fed both forms of whelks at the end of periods 12 to 14. Egg production was not affected (P < 0.05) by treatment up to period 10. During period 11, egg production was lower (P < 0.05) for the hens fed GW compared to OS/GL and GL. For periods 12 to 14, hens fed both forms of whelks produced lower (P < 0.05) numbers of eggs than those fed OS/GL and GL. Hens fed GW produced fewer (P < 0.05) eggs than those fed W/GW. Feed conversions for hens fed W/GW and GW were less efficient (P < 0.05) during periods 12 to 14. Higher environmental temperatures occurred during periods 12 to 13, which may have negatively affected the performance of hens fed whelks. However, there were no differences (P < 0.05) among treatment means for egg weight, egg specific gravity, and shell breaking strength. GW resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) calcium balance than the other treatments for period 14.  相似文献

The effect of ruminal degradable protein source in roughage diets on nutrient digestibility and animal growth was evaluated in two trials using lambs. In trial 1, two qualities of alfalfa and smooth brome hays replaced 0, 15, 30 or 100% of an ammonia (NH3)-treated corn cob negative control diet in a digestion trial using 26 mixed breed wethers (31.8 kg). Fifteen or 30% inclusion of hay increased (P less than .01) dry matter (DM) intake, regardless of hay type or quality. Cell wall intake was highest for 100% high quality brome hay. Positive associative action on digestibility of DM and cell walls occurred with 30% of each hay tested when diets were fed ad libitum. Measured at equal intakes, DM and cell wall digestibilities were affected by forage type X level and forage quality X level interactions (P less than .01), which showed that the magnitude of associative action was greater for 30% of high vs low quality and alfalfa vs brome hay, respectively. Magnitude of associative response on cell wall digestibility was more highly correlated to degradable N (r = .88) than cell solubles (r = .64) content of hay. In trial 2, 72 young growing lambs were allotted to three sources of supplemental ruminal degradable N (NH3, casein, corn steep liquor) superimposed upon two levels of alfalfa hay (0 or 30% of diet DM). Diets containing 0% alfalfa were supplemented with ruminal escape protein equivalent to that supplied by 30% alfalfa hay.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Gastro-intestinal helminth of a group of three yearling mare Shetland ponies, which were set-stocked on a small pasture from February until September, were compared with those of a similar group of ponies, which grazed a similar pasture from February to July and subsequently was removed to a pasture which had been grazed by sheep from April to July. In addition both groups were treated with cambendazole when the latter group was removed to the sheep pasture.Pasture larval counts and worm counts demonstrated that the group grazed after the sheep acquired considerably smaller burdens of nematodes of the subfamilies Cyathostominae and Strongylinae, but considerably higher burdens of Trichostrongylus axei than the group which remained on the same pasture. The T. axei infections in the former group caused an increase in the serum pepsinogen levels within two weeks after removal to the sheep pasture followed by a gradual decrease. At necrospy T. axei populations consisted almost exclusively of inhibited early third state larvae.  相似文献
