From 280 lesions from normal cattle at slaughter, 10 were found to contain thin, branching, Gram-positive organisms belonging to the Nocardia/Streptomyces group and this was confirmed by culture in 3 cases. Macroscopically the older lesions were similar in appearance to those of tuberculosis. Microscopically, all lesions contained numerous foreign body giant cells and thin, branching organisms. The older lesions also contained areas of necrosis, caseation, mineralisation and fibrosis.  相似文献

SUMMARY Groups of 10-day-old calves and 5-month-old lambs were bruised 48 hours, 24 hours, 8 hours, or the instant before slaughter. By gross examination, 48-hour-old calf bruises had a characteristic red-yellow colouration, but other bruises could not be differentiated reliably. By microscopic examination, bruises of all ages could be differentiated by cellular criteria common to both species. Unlike fresh lesions, 8 hour bruises contained numerous neutrophils. Twenty-four hour old bruises contained equal numbers of macrophages and neutrophils and at 48 hours macrophages, fusiform cells and new capillaries were present in the damaged muscle. The criteria established in this study could be used to determine the ages of spontaneous bruises in abattoir carcases and so provide a basis for an investigation aimed at detection of the traumatic episode from which they result.  相似文献

Prevalence and distribution of caseous lymphadenitis in feral goats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A total of 2,920 feral goats from pastoral areas of Western Australia were examined and the prevalence of caseous lymphadenitis was estimated to be 7.8 +/- 0.9% in goats presented for slaughter. Head, body and visceral lesions were present in 49.3%, 46.7% and 12.3% of affected goats, respectively. A comparison with previously reported data from sheep has been made and significant differences are discussed. Lung lesions were relatively uncommon in goats, whereas the distribution of carcase lesions was similar between the species. Multiple lesions appear to be less common in goats than in sheep.  相似文献

Groups of sheep were dosed with vaccines containing Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis toxoid combined in varying amounts with 5 clostridial antigens. Resistance of the sheep to infection with C pseudotuberculosis was tested at 1, 6 and 12 months after vaccination by infection with pus from ovine lymph glands actively infected with C pseudotuberculosis. The outcome was assessed 3 months after challenge by slaughter and inspection of the sheep for caseous lymphadenitis lesions. Protection was demonstrated by a significant reduction in the proportion of immunised sheep exhibiting lesions compared with control sheep, and by fewer abscesses in affected immunised sheep than in affected control sheep. A positive correlation was found between amount of C pseudotuberculosis toxoid administered and degree of protection obtained. Chromatographically-purified toxoid induced essentially the same protection, suggesting that anti-toxic immunity is the major factor in protection.  相似文献

Gastritis associated with Helicobacter-like organisms in baboons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Subclinical gastritis was observed in 10 of 10 baboons (Papio spp.) from a toxicity study in a research facility. The lesions were similar in xenobiotic-treated and control animals, suggesting a spontaneous rather than chemical-induced disease. Histologic examination revealed lymphoplasmacytic gastritis in the antral mucosa. The fundic mucosa contained minor, scattered aggregates of lymphocytes and plasma cells. A Warthin-Starry silver stain and ultrastructural examination revealed numerous spiral-shaped bacteria morphologically resembling Helicobacter pylori in antral glands and numerous spiral-shaped bacteria morphologically consistent with H. heilmannii-like organisms in fundic glands. Polymerase chain reaction assay of paraffin-embedded antral and fundic tissue using primers for the urease gene and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene amplified deoxyribonucleic acid fragments with a high degree of sequence homology for H. pylori and H. heilmannii. This is the first report of gastritis associated with Helicobacter-like organisms in baboons.  相似文献

Background: Bronchoalveolar lavage has proven helpful for the diagnosis of certain ovine diseases of the lungs. There is insufficient data concerning the leukocyte profile of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from MaediVisna infected sheep. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the differential leukocyte profile of BALF associated with Maedi virus infection in sheep and to determine whether cytologic examination of BALF is an effective way to diagnose Maedi or determine the severity of lung lesions. Methods: BALF and serum samples were analyzed from 400 sheep. Sediment smears of bronchoalveolar lavage were stained with Diff‐Quik and examined microscopically to obtain a 200‐cell differential cell count. Serum was tested using a commercial kit for Maedi–Visna virus antibodies. Lung samples obtained at the time of slaughter were weighed and examined histologically. Results: Maedi‐infected sheep (n=267; seropositive with lung lesions) had a significantly higher percentage of lymphocytes and lower percentage of macrophages in BALF than normal sheep (n=133; seronegative and no lung lesions). These differences were significantly more severe in animals with advanced vs moderate lung lesions. Using classification trees, a cut‐off of 13.5% lymphocytes was predictive of Maedi infection and a cut‐off of 24.5% lymphocytes was predictive of advanced lung lesions. Conclusions: Cytologic examination of BALF is useful for the clinical diagnosis of Maedi in sheep and provides important information about the severity of the lung lesions.  相似文献

Tryptamine alkaloid toxicosis (Phalaris staggers) was diagnosed in feedlot sheep. Clinical signs of toxicosis, which were exacerbated by excitement, included gait abnormalities, muscular tremors, nystagmus, and convulsions. An estimated 8% of the most severely affected lambs had clinical signs of toxicosis. Gross lesions detected in the brain of affected lambs consisted of focal gray-green discoloration in the brain stem and thalamus; these areas had microscopic evidence of intraneuronal pigment accumulation. Brain specimens obtained at slaughter indicated that 60% of the lambs had lesions consistent with tryptamine alkaloid toxicosis. Tryptamine alkaloids were found in low concentrations in the feed. Lambs exposed to these feeds had higher death losses than those that were not exposed to the feeds. Cobalt concentration in the feed was higher than that previously reported to be associated with Phalaris staggers.  相似文献

Ovine progressive pneumonia was found to be prevalent in many major sheep-producing areas in the United States. The incidence was determined in a sampling of cull sheep (5 to 10 years of age) at slaughter. Diagnostic criteria were based on finding viral-specific immunoglobulins, virus, or lesions. Each method indicated a high incidence in samplings from midwestern and northwestern states and a relatively low incidence in the sampling from southwestern states. Of those sheep examined, precipitating immuno-globulin to the causal virus was seen in 1.0% to 67.5%, virus was isolated from the lungs of 0% to 46.2%, and lymphoid hyperplasia was seen in the lungs of 0% to 38.5%. The most common lesions in the lungs (from which virus was isolated) were multiple lymphoid nodules and increased fibromuscular tissue.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect on ovine footrot of repeated daily footbathing in a solution of zinc sulphate with surfactant. DESIGN: Merino sheep were allocated to control and treatment groups of 119 sheep each at week 0. The sheep had a history of S1, U1, T and/or U6 types of Dichelobacter nodosus in interdigital and underrunning footrot lesions. Feet were not pared prior to treatment. PROCEDURE: Treatment sheep were footbathed in a 15 to 18% (w/v) solution of zinc sulphate with surfactant for 10 min on five consecutive days during week 1. At week 2, and fortnightly to week 52, all feet were inspected, lesion scores were recorded and samples were taken for laboratory tests. At week 53, all feet with no lesions at week 52, but with underrunning lesions prior to week 1, were pared and samples were taken. RESULTS: After footbathing, there were no lesions in any treatment sheep at any inspection to week 52. The percentage of feet of control sheep with lesions increased from 9% (391 of 4,284) between weeks 20 and 36, to 14% (593 of 4,284) between weeks 36 and 52. Ninety-five of 96 control sheep with no lesions at week 20 were still asymptomatic at week 52. D nodosus was not isolated from samples taken from 99 and 87 pared feet of treatment and control sheep, respectively. CONCLUSION: Repeated daily footbathing combined with prolonged exposure to a dry environment eradicated footrot in sheep with both interdigital and underrunning lesions in feet that were not pared prior to treatment.  相似文献

A flock of New Zealand Romney lambs on a property in Hawkes Bay was examined from August 1978 to June 1979. In November, the lambs in the flock were allocated to groups as follows: 600 lambs from which groups were selected for slaughter by commercial criteria each month (selected groups); 700 lambs which were subdivided into 8 groups (random groups), one of which was sent for slaughter each month; and 25 lambs to monitor serological responses to viral infections (surveillance group). At slaughter, lesions in the anterior lobes of the lungs were classified into small, large or mottled lesions while those in the posterior regions of the diaphragmatic lobes comprised a separate group. The prevalence of the pneumonic and pleural lesions was recorded in all groups of lambs. Pneumonic lesions in lambs from the random groups were further classified after microscopic examination. The prevalence of infections with parainfluenza virus type 3, adenoviruses, Mycoplasma spp., and Pasteurella haemolytica was also recorded in the random groups. Average carcase weights of all groups of lambs were also recorded. The prevalence of large lesions in the anterior lobes, pleural lesions and devaluation of carcases due to pleural lesions was significantly lower in the selected than in the random groups. In the random groups, the prevalence of small lesions in the anterior lobes of the lungs was high and was not always associated with infections with the viruses, P. haemolytica or Mycoplasma spp. Microscopically, these lesions could he divided into four types as previously described. The prevalence of large lesions in the anterior lobes was low in November but increased to peak levels in February and March and then declined to intermediate levels. The prevalence of large lesions was associated with that of infections with the micro-organisms and significantly more large lesions contained P. haemolytica and Mycoplasma spp. than did small lesions or normal lungs. The prevalence of large lesions also appeared to be inversely related to the average carcase weights of the lambs. Most large lesions were similar on microscopy to those of "enzootic" or "atypical" pneumonia but were divided into four types on the basis of exudative and proliferative features. The prevalence of mottled lesions in the anterior lobes was low throughout the period of observation but peaks were observed in January and May. The peaks were associated with adenovirus infection and elevated prevalence of infection with P. haemolytica and Mycoplasma spp. Significantly more mottled lesions contained P. haemolytica than did small lesions or normal lungs. Microscopically, most mottled lesions were similar to exudative large lesions. Lesions in the posterior diaphragmatic lobes were most numerous in November and from April to June. Their prevalence appeared to be related to anthelminthic treatment and environmental conditions. Microscopically, these lesions were typical of those following infection with Dictyocaulus filaria.  相似文献

Changes in the common bile duct that contained adult Fasciola hepatica of sheep were evaluated by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nine ewes were inoculated with F hepatica metacercariae and necropsied 18 weeks after inoculation. The proximal portion of the common bile duct (CBD) that contained adult flukes was recovered and examined by LM and SEM. The CBD from 2 noninoculated ewes were used for control. On gross examination, CBD were markedly large because of the adult flukes, which were free in the lumen of the ducts. Extensive hemorrhage was not found either in intrahepatic or in extrahepatic bile ducts of any sheep. Histologic examination revealed changes, such as villous hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the epithelium; cell infiltration, predominantly with eosinophils or macrophages; and arterial intimal proliferation. By SEM, the epithelial surface of the CBD appeared intact. Villous hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the epithelium observed by LM was clearly seen by SEM. Epithelial damage, seen as small areas of denuded surface by LM and SEM, was confined to a few areas of the mucosa. Lack of extensive hemorrhage and confined epithelial damage were evaluated relative to the mode of feeding of adult flukes.  相似文献

1. The aetiology of scabby hips was studied in broilers by scratching the skin with chicken claws, clipping the birds' claws and varying the effects of stocking density and food trough allocation. 2. Gentle scratching twice a week resulted in skin lesions that could not be distinguished from clinical scabby hips at slaughter. Interaction between birds appeared to be a prerequisite for the skin condition to develop. 3. Clipping of the claws at day 25 could almost completely prevent scabby hips at day 45 when the birds were slaughtered. 4. No positive correlation was found between feather condition and the severity of scabby hips at slaughter at day 45. 5. Decrease in stocking density and an increase in feeding space resulted in a reduction of skin lesions at day 25 and resultant scabby hips after slaughter.  相似文献

Rapid deaths in confinement cattle caused by exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas from manure pits has not been reported in the USA. In 1997, 158 cattle in 2 confinement pens were exposed to H2S gas as the manure in the pits under a slatted floor was agitated prior to pumping. Approximately 35 of the cattle were lying on the floor when the upper agitator was turned on. Within 5 minutes, many these cattle were down on their sides and paddling. Of these, 26 died within a few minutes. The survivors were treated and sent to slaughter. Cattle that did not show immediate signs of toxicosis remained clinically unaffected. Two steers that were near death were brought to the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for clinical evaluation, euthanasia, and necropsy. They were recumbent and unresponsive to visual and auditory stimuli. Necropsy examination yielded no significant gross lesions. No evidence of viral or bacterial infection was found. Ocular fluid nitrate concentrations were within normal limits, and no lead was detected in either animal. Microscopic examination revealed lesions consistent with H2S-induced central nervous system anoxia. Histologically, sections of brain demonstrated massive, diffuse cerebral cortical laminar necrosis and edema. Portions of the outer lamina contained hypereosinophilic and shrunken neurons. The subcortical white matter was vacuolated in some areas. The history, clinical signs, and histologic lesion of cerebral laminar necrosis led to a diagnosis of H2S toxicosis in these cattle.  相似文献

SUMMARY: :Five groups of 5 shorn and 5 unshorn caseous lymphadenitis (CLA)-free Merino wether weaners were each placed in feedlot pens with 6 Merino ewes, 2 or more of which had CLA lung lesions but no discharging superficial lesions. The sheep were kept together for 5 months.
Twenty-eight per cent of the shorn weaners and 20% of the unshorn weaners developed antibodies to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. At slaughter, 8% of the shorn weaners and 12% of the unshorn weaners had CLA lesions in either lungs, lymph nodes or both. In the absence of contact with CLA-infected ewes, a control group of 5 shorn and 5 unshorn weaners failed to develop antibodies to C. pseudotuberculosis or CLA lesions in the same period. This showed that sheep with CLA abscesses in the lungs but no discharging superficial abscesses were a source of C. pseudotuberculosis infection to other sheep. Aust Vet J. 64: 261–263  相似文献

Desert sheep were experimentally infected with a goat strain of Sarcoptes scabiei, proving that this mite is not completely host specific. More severe lesions were produced on sheep when the mites were applied to lacerated than when applied to scarified or non-scarified areas. Lesions were more pronounced on moistened areas than dry areas and lesions produced on dry scarified areas resembled those produced on non-scarified moistened ones. Skin scrapings from the experimental lesions in the sheep contained numerous mites of all stages, proving the goat mites had become well established and were reproducing actively in the experimental lesions. Severe histopathological changes were observed in skin sections, comprising mainly thick crust formation, mites beneath the keratin and severe degenerative and necrotic changes. Treatment of sheep with ivermectin at a dose rate of 200 micrograms kg-1 body weight produced rapid and excellent cure.  相似文献

Postmortem examination of a 3-year-old male Iranian native sheep with a history of anorexia and severe colic, revealed an intussusception of the small intestine, 30 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction. Scattered hyperplastic lesions were present in the jejunal and ileal mucosa especially in intussuscipien. Microscopic examination of these lesions showed severe papillary hyperplasia of the epithelium associated with developmental stages of coccidia in the epithelial cells. An unusual type of intussusception and the presence of the proliferative nodular form of coccidiosis in the intestinal wall of intussuscipien suggested that coccidiosis could be considered as the possible cause of the problem.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of repeated daily footbathing in zinc sulphate on virulent ovine footrot associated with S1, U1 and U5 zymogram types of Dichelobacter nodosus, including the highly virulent S1 strain A198. DESIGN: A field trial with experimentally infected sheep. PROCEDURE: At week 0, 50 sheep were infected with D. nodosus strains A198 (S1), C305 (U1), BC3993 (U5) and BC3995 (U5). At weeks 1 and 47, respectively, 169 and 235 uninfected sheep were added. At week 60, sheep were allocated to control and treatment groups each containing 220 sheep. Every 2 or 4 weeks to week 113, feet were inspected, and lesions were scored and sampled. Treatment sheep were footbathed in 15 to 18% (w/v) zinc sulphate with surfactant for 5 consecutive days (10 min per day) during week 61. During week 110, the footbathing protocol was applied again, this time to all surviving treatment and control sheep. RESULTS: BC3993 and A198 were isolated from 57% (162 of 285) and 20% (58 of 285), respectively, of new lesions sampled between weeks 3 and 13, and 21% (57 of 271) and 50% (136 of 271) between weeks 49 and 59. Percentages of new lesions associated with C305 and BC3995 remained constant. During the initial 17 weeks after footbathing at week 61, 90% (75 of 83) and 19% (95 of 490) of lesions in treatment and control sheep, respectively, were score 4 or 5, and 94% (47 of 50) and 38% (33 of 87) of those were associated with A198. CONCLUSIONS: Repeated daily footbathing did not eradicate virulent ovine footrot because strain A198 produced deep, covert lesions that facilitated the survival of D. nodosus.  相似文献
