Veterinary medicine and environmental hygiene--20 years of seminars on environmental hygiene]

The changes of the environment after industrialization since 1965 influenced some political decisions concerning a critical evaluation of such development which may injure the environment. The School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover discussed in that time how the problems could be met by establishing a postgraduate stadium of environmental sciences. These ideas were realized, starting with seminars in the first year for one week, later for one or two days periods (Table). Postgraduate students and interested veterinarians with questions arising from their occupation participated in the seminars. The main topics of the seminars referred to effects of chemical, physical and biological influences from the environment upon farm animals and vice versa that part of animal housing which is involved in the harmful changes of the environment.     

Virchow's contributions to veterinary medicine: celebrated then, forgotten now

In 1858, Rudolf Virchow, the professor of pathology in Berlin University, published the book "Cellular Pathology". A compendium of his lectures to physicians and medical students, he introduced the use of microscopy for the study of human diseases. To an astonishing extent Rudolf Virchow was helpful to the disciplines of veterinary medicine (and veterinary pathology). Considered a scientific genius in several disciplines, this essay deals exclusively with the devotion of Virchow, a scholarly physician, to the profession of veterinary medicine. He respected veterinary research, supported governmental veterinary education, and provided a role model for the veterinarians who were drafting control legislation of contagious diseases in livestock. Repeatedly, he responded in help when seemingly irretrievable problems arose. Examples of Virchow's activities in the realms of veterinary medicine and pathology are marshalled here to shed light on this pioneer "veterinary pathologist". In celebration of 50 years of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 1999, it is timely to remember that Rudolf Virchow, the father of cellular pathology, also fathered veterinary pathology, whose offsprings in Canada and the U.S.A. (Osler, Clement, Williams, Olafson, Jones) had enabled them to form and foster the A.C.V.P.

Feline postvaccinal sarcoma: 20 years later

Comparison of the annual prevalence of feline postvaccinal sarcomas among 11 609 feline skin mass submissions from 1992 to 2010 revealed no decrease in disease prevalence or increase in the age of affected cats in response to changes in vaccine formulation or recommended changes in feline vaccination protocols.     

Examination and preventive medicine protocols in psittacines.

Preventive medicine is the best insurance for effective avian health maintenance and infectious disease control. Psittacine birds should have a yearly physical examination including a thorough history. Additionally, these animals require adequate management and husbandry including a commercial bird food diet supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables. A complete preventive medicine program should include diagnostic tests as deemed necessary by the avian veterinarian in addition to strict quarantine, vaccination, and disinfection. Necropsy and histopathology are also important components of an effective preventive medicine program.
