Two hundred thirty-one cats treated with radioactive iodine at the Texas Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital were followed for a median of 25 months by means of an ambidirectional (prospective, retrospective) cohort study design. Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine predictors of survival based on data at the time of hyperthyroid diagnosis (collected retrospectively) and found that only age at diagnosis and sex of the cat were predictors of survival. Increasing age (for each year of age, relative risk [RR] = 1.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.1-1.3) and being male (RR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.5-0.9) increased likelihood of death. Tables predicting survival after diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism for various age and sex combinations were created. In addition, Cox proportional hazard models were run with all data available at the end of the study (collected retrospectively and prospectively) including number and type of major health problems reported at the time of death or censoring. In this model, significant factors were age at diagnosis, sex, and either type of major health problem or number of health problems. Cats with renal disease or cancer were more likely not to survive and increasing from none to 2 health problems also decreased survival. Renal problems and cancer were the most common health problems at the time of death or censoring. This study provides estimates of duration of survival for cats successfully treated for hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine, which can be useful in assisting with client treatment decisions.  相似文献

Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of cats, and hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of dogs. Little is known regarding the effects of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or treatment of these disorders on calcium metabolism in the dog or cat, however, especially any potential effects on bone. With better diagnostic tools, better treatments, and increased longevity of pets, the clinical impact of thyroid disorders on calcium metabolism and bone may be uncovered.  相似文献

The influence of various pathological conditions on fructosamine levels in normoglycaemic dogs and cats was investigated. The most frequent and most pronounced deviations were found in animals with hypoproteinaemia, in which fructosamine was significantly lower than in the controls. In 66 per cent of the dogs and 67 per cent of the cats with hypoproteinaemia the levels were below the reference range. In the dogs the concentration of fructosamine was correlated with the level of albumin, but in the cats it was correlated with the level of total protein. Dogs with hyperlipidaemia and azotaemia also had significantly lower levels of fructosamine; 38 per cent of those with hyperlipidaemia and 47 per cent of those with azotaemia had fructosamine levels outside the reference range. No significant changes in fructosamine were detected in dogs or cats with hyperproteinaemia or hyperbilirubinaemia, or in cats with hyperlipidaemia or azotaemia.  相似文献

Forty multiparous Holstein dry cows on d 21 prepartum were randomly allocated to four blocks of 10 cows to examine the effects of reducing the dietary cation–anion difference (DCAD) on calcium homeostasis, acid–base balance, health status, and subsequent lactation performance. The reduced DCADs (Na + K − Cl − S, mEq/kg DM) of + 150,+ 50, − 50, and − 150 were obtained by addition of anionic salts. Reducing DCAD resulted in mild metabolic acidosis as indicated by the sharp decline in urinary pH, and minor reductions in blood pH and HCO3 concentration. Greater plasma calcium concentration was observed in cows fed diets of − 50 and − 150 DCAD (< 0.05) than those on + 50 and + 150 DCAD diets. The nadir of plasma calcium level on the day of calving was lower (< 0.05) than the highest level on d 14 prepartum (8.33 vs. 9.30 mg/dL). Composite colostrum calcium concentration was decreased (< 0.05) with time on d 1 relative to d 2 postpartum (0.212 vs. 0.174%), and feeding of diet − 150 DCAD induced higher (< 0.05) composite colostrum calcium content than other three DCAD diets. No case of milk fever occurred for any diets, but feeding the two negative DCAD diets reduced (< 0.05) retained placenta incidence compared with diet of + 150 DCAD. Dry matter intake, milk yield and compositions of fat, protein, and lactose were non-significantly affected (> 0.05) by dietary treatments. In conclusion, urinary pH is an effective indicator of extracellular fluid acid–base balance, and feeding negative DCAD in late gestation period is beneficial for dairy cows in blood calcium homeostasis and improvement of health status.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine if dogs and cats with renal failure, or other severe non-cardiac disease, and no antemortem evidence of cardiac disease on basic clinical evaluation, have elevated levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using 56 dogs and 14 cats with primary non-cardiac disease (39 dogs with azotaemic renal failure, 14 cats with azotaemic renal failure, 17 dogs with non-cardiac systemic disease); 7/25 dogs and 6/14 cats had murmurs detected on physical examination. Serum or heparinised plasma was collected and analysed for cTnI. RESULTS: Cardiac troponin I concentrations were elevated above reference intervals in 70% of dogs and 70% of cats with azotaemic renal failure and in 70% of dogs with a variety of systemic non-cardiac diseases. Cardiac troponin I concentrations did not correlate with the degree of azotaemia, presence of murmurs, hypertension or type of non-cardiac illness. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac troponin I concentration is often elevated in dogs and cats with azotaemic renal failure and in dogs with other systemic non-cardiac illness, suggesting that these conditions often result in clinically inapparent myocardial injury or possibly altered elimination of cTnI.  相似文献

Hyperthyroidism can increase the renal excretion of magnesium and thus cause hypomagnesemia in various species. Anaerobically collected blood samples from 15 hyperthyroid and 40 normal, healthy cats were analyzed with an ion-selective electrode analyzer and a serum biochemical analyzer. There was no significant difference in ionized or total serum magnesium concentration between the 2 groups, but there was a significant difference (P = 0.004) in the ratio of ionized to total serum magnesium concentrations between the healthy cats and the hyperthyroid cats with thyroxine (T4) concentrations at or above the median. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.894, P = 0.000) between the ionized and total magnesium concentrations in the hyperthyroid cats. The hyperthyroid cats had a significantly lower (P = 0.003) total serum protein concentration than the healthy cats. A significant negative correlation (r = -0.670, P = 0.006) was detected between the ionized magnesium and logarithmically transformed total T4 concentrations in the hyperthyroid cats, which suggests that the severity of hyperthyroidism may contribute to a decrease in the ionized magnesium concentration.  相似文献

The metabolic clearance rate, volume of distribution, and fractional clearance rate of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and iodide were calculated for 6 healthy and 7 hyperthyroid cats, using single-compartmental and noncompartmental methods of analysis. The mean T4 volume of distribution of the hyperthyroid cats was 32.0% less than that of the healthy cats; it was the only variable that was significantly different (P less than 0.05) between these 2 groups of cats. The mean fractional clearance rate of T4 in the hyperthyroid cats was 53.2% greater than that in the healthy cats, but this difference was not significant. Hyperthyroid cats had no significant differences in T3 or iodide kinetic variables when compared with those in healthy cats. Single-compartmental analysis significantly overestimated T4 kinetic variables of healthy cats and T4, T3, and iodide kinetic variables of hyperthyroid cats when compared with the noncompartmental method of analysis.  相似文献

A raised concentration of serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a sensitive marker of cardiac myocyte injury in the cat and assays developed for its measurement in human patients have been validated in the cat. Raised levels have been associated with a number of cardiac insults including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and trauma. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease of older cats and excess thyroid hormone is known to produce significant cardiovascular effects in this species. This study evaluated the effect of treatment for hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine on cTnI concentration, assessed the association between thyroxin levels and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and cTnI concentration in cats treated for hyperthyroidism and described changes in echocardiographic parameters following treatment. Prior to the treatment serum cTnI was measured and echocardiography performed, thyroxin, cTnI, and echocardiography were then repeated at various time points following radioisotope therapy. The results show that higher thyroxin levels were significantly (P=0.002) associated with a higher likelihood of the cat presenting with detectable levels of cTnI. No significant association was found between GFR and presence of detectable levels of cTnI. Furthermore the results indicate that the effects of hyperthyroidism on echocardiographic parameters appear considerably less in this study than in previous studies and that the main outcome of treatment on these parameters is a significant reduction in fractional shortening (P=0.006). These results suggest that chronic exposure to excess thyroid hormone may induce myocyte damage of sufficient severity to raise serum cTnI concentration in a proportion of cats that resolves following establishment of a euthyroid state.  相似文献
