Three dogs with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency developed oral bleeding during treatment with pancreatic enzyme supplements. According to the owners of the dogs, bleeding from the oral cavity developed during or shortly after consumption of meals containing the pancreatic enzyme supplement. Oral bleeding stopped in all dogs when owners reduced the dose of the pancreatic enzyme supplement. In 2 dogs, the decrease in the dose of the pancreatic enzyme supplement did not affect fecal consistency. However, in the third dog, the decrease in dose led to a recurrence of clinical signs. Findings in these dogs suggest that high doses of pancreatic enzyme supplements can cause oral bleeding in dogs with pancreatic insufficiency, but that oral bleeding can be successfully managed by dose reduction in most dogs.  相似文献

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a member of macrocyclic lactons family. It is a toxin--phytosteride produced by fungi of Fusarium ssp. genus. Zearalenone contaminates food and animal feeding stuffs and its destruction is difficult. It requires application of particular compounds that would bind zearalenone in the feed or feeding stuff or in the gastrointestinal tract and decrease its bio-accessibility. It should also fulfil all the safety requirements regarding the plant supplements and animals that are fed with this feed. The aim of the study was to estimate if the feed supplemented with different doses of zearalenone and zearalenone destructor causes changes of the metabolic profile in gilts. The results obtained show that applied destructor did not cause negative haematological and biochemical changes in the blood of the gilts examined. It can be suggested that it is a safe feed supplement pigs in prevention of zearalenone micotoxicosis.  相似文献

Consumption of sand and dirt by horses can cause chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and colic caused by irritation and obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Prevention has been primarily focused on changes in management to reduce the intake of sand resulting from feeding on the ground. Studies regarding the use of psyllium for the prevention of sand accumulation in clinically normal horses have not been published. A nutritional supplement combining probiotics, prebiotics, and psyllium was hypothesized to increase fecal sand output in clinically normal horses in a natural environment. A measured volume of feces was collected daily from eight clinically normal horses and screened for sand 1 week before and during 35 days of treatment with a supplement combining probiotics, prebiotics, and psyllium. Sand was isolated from feces using a flotation decanting method and was expressed in milligrams sand per gram of feces. Fecal sand output increased significantly (P < .01) by day 4 of supplementation and remained significantly increased through day 31 of the feeding trial. Daily supplementation with a probiotic, prebiotic, and psyllium supplement demonstrated enhanced fecal sand clearance in clinically normal horses. These results suggest that this product may be an effective prophylactic treatment for sand enteropathy and sand colic in which management alone is not sufficient to prevent intestinal sand accumulation. Further studies are needed to confirm the utility of this product in clearing sand from horses with naturally occurring sand impactions and enteropathy.  相似文献

Disseminated hemangiosarcoma in a horse   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A 6.5-year-old horse with a history of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage was admitted because of acute onset of epistaxis, dyspnea, high respiratory rate, pale mucous membranes, and dark feces. There was no clinical or laboratory evidence of a bleeding disorder, and the horse's anemia was considered to be secondary to pulmonary hemorrhage. The cause of the hemorrhage was not found on thoracic sonograms or from cytologic examination of transtracheal aspirates. Despite supportive care, the horse's health deteriorated, and it was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed blood in the thoracic and peritoneal cavities and reddish black masses in many tissues. Histologic examination confirmed a diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma. Hemangiosarcoma is a rare tumor in horses; however, as this case demonstrates, it can cause pulmonary hemorrhage and respiratory distress and may be difficult to diagnose before death.  相似文献

Eosinophilic enteritis in a specific-pathogen-free cat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Moderate to severe, chronic, segmental eosinophilic enteritis was diagnosed histopathologically in a 2-year-old, specific-pathogen-free cat. Peripheral eosinophilia was not observed, although eosinophilic infiltrates were found in mesenteric lymph nodes. Typical gastrointestinal signs characteristic of this disease (diarrhea, vomiting, and anorexia) were not seen; only weight loss was observed. Treatment was not instituted. Previously reported cases of feline eosinophilic enteritis have been associated with several domestic breeds having a diversity of backgrounds. The cat of this report had a known genealogy and disease-free history, was reared under barrier conditions, and was fed a restricted diet. The cause of the disease in this cat was not determined.  相似文献

A 10‐year‐old male domestic shorthaired cat was presented with chronic diarrhea unresponsive to treatment. Laboratory testing identified hyperglobulinemia and mild nonregenerative anemia, and nongastrointestinal causes of diarrhea were ruled out. Gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy were performed and disclosed diffuse generalized granulomatous and lymphoplasmocytic inflammatory reaction in all segments of gastrointestinal tract evaluated, with numerous Leishmania spp. amastigotes within the cytoplasm of macrophages. The organism also was detected in spleen and bone marrow and Leishmania spp. serology was positive (immunofluorescence assay 1 : 160). A diagnosis of granulomatous enteritis secondary to leishmaniosis was made. Gastrointestinal signs resolved after treatment with allopurinol and a dietary supplement of nucleotides and active hexose‐correlated compounds (N‐AHCC), but seropositivity and gammopathy persisted 8 months later. The cat died of unrelated causes after an additional 3 months and permission for necropsy was not granted. Leishmaniosis as a cause of chronic diarrhea has not been reported previously in cats and should be considered in endemic areas in cats with chronic gastrointestinal signs.  相似文献

BackgroundCataracts are the leading cause of impaired vision or blindness in dogs. There are many antioxidants that can prevent cataract progression, but whether they are clinically effective in dogs has not been established.ObjectivesTo analyze the delaying or preventing effect of oral antioxidants on canine senile cataracts through retrospective analysis.MethodsMedical records of dogs from January 1, 2015 to July 10, 2020 were reviewed. Dogs that were 8 yr of age or older with senile cataracts were included in this study. The dogs were divided into two treatment groups (dogs administered with Ocu-GLO supplement and dogs administered with Meni-One Eye R/C supplement) and a control group (dogs that were not administered any supplement). Dogs with incipient and immature cataracts were included in this study. Altogether, 112 dogs (156 eyes) with incipient cataracts and 60 dogs (77 eyes) with immature cataracts were included. The period of time that cataracts progressed from incipient to immature, and from immature to mature was recorded for each dog.ResultsThere was no significant delaying effect on the progression of incipient cataracts. However, both Ocu-GLO (hazard ratio = 0.265, p = 0.026) and Meni-One (hazard ratio = 0.246, p = 0.005) significantly delayed the progression of immature cataracts compared to the control group.ConclusionsAlthough there was no significant delaying effect of oral antioxidants on incipient cataract progression, antioxidants could be used to delay the progression of senile immature cataract.  相似文献

Bleeding abomasal ulcers in adult dairy cattle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Case records of abomasal ulcers in adult dairy cattle admitted to the University of Pennsylvania during a 12-year period were reviewed. The only records retrieved were those for cases in which the clinical signs were directly associated with gastrointestinal bleeding. Of 6,385 adult cows admitted during the study period, 69 had clinical ulceration. Twenty-four were bleeding ulcers: 12 nontumor-associated bleeding ulcers and 12 lymphosarcoma-associated bleeding ulcers. Nontumor-associated bleeding ulcers were commonly found in young cows (7 cows less than or equal to 4 years old) that often had concurrent postparturient disease conditions. Lymphosarcoma-associated bleeding ulcers were found more commonly in older cows (10 cows greater than or equal to 6 years old) during all stages of lactation, often without concurrent diseases (8 cows).  相似文献

Feces from 27 dogs were evaluated to establish baseline fecal hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations when the dogs were fed diets containing varying amounts of Hb. Fecal Hb concentration was measured, using a quantitative fluorometric assay that was based on the conversion of nonfluorescing Hb heme to fluorescing porphyrins. Mean fecal Hb concentration was 0.31 mg/g of feces when the dogs were fed a dry diet low in Hb. This corresponded to a daily fecal blood loss of 0.043 ml/kg of body weight. The fecal Hb concentration was directly related to the dietary Hb concentration. The average recovery of orally ingested blood was 41% in 4 dogs. This fluorometric assay quantitatively detected small amounts of gastrointestinal bleeding over a wide range of fecal Hb concentrations for which feces appeared normal. Results of this study establish dietary conditions necessary for quantitative evaluation of experimental and clinical gastrointestinal bleeding.  相似文献

Lymphoma was diagnosed in a 4-year-old spayed female Collie, and treatment with a combination chemotherapy protocol incorporating prednisone, L-asparaginase, vincristine, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide was initiated. The dog had signs of gastrointestinal tract toxicosis and myelosuppression after treatment with P-glycoprotein-substrate drugs (vincristine, vinblastine, and doxorubicin) even when dosages were reduced, but did not have signs of toxicosis after treatment with cyclophosphamide, a non-P-glycoprotein-substrate drug, even when administered at the full dosage. It was postulated that a deletion mutation in the canine MDR1 gene (deltaMDR1 295-298) could be responsible for the drug toxicoses in this dog. This mutation has been identified as the cause of a functional P-glycoprotein defect in Collies susceptible to the toxic effects of ivermectin, another P-glycoprotein-substrate drug. The MDR1 genotype of this dog consisted of 1 normal and 1 mutant MDR1 allele. Because P-glycoprotein contributes to renal, biliary, and intestinal excretion of P-glycoprotein-substrate drugs, it is possible that drug excretion was delayed in this patient, resulting in clinical signs of toxicosis.  相似文献

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in dogs. Despite the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), many owners seek natural therapies; either to augment the response to NSAIDs, or as a replacement. Substantial research has been directed to investigation of novel therapies. A randomized, double-blinded, controlled study was conducted to assess the efficacy of a herbal remedy for treatment of canine osteoarthritis pain. Client-owned dogs (N = 24) with osteoarthritis were enrolled between 2 veterinary hospitals. Each dog underwent veterinary and owner assessment at 0, 4, and 8 weeks, using the Canine Brief Pain Inventory and Hudson activity scale. Blood was collected for a complete blood (cell) count (CBC) and serum chemistry analysis. The product was deemed to be safe and well-tolerated at the manufacturer recommended dosage, with no significant changes seen in the CBC or serum biochemical analyses. Aside from1 dog that developed gastrointestinal upset, all other dogs tolerated the supplement without complication. The supplement did not statistically improve clinical signs in dogs based on veterinary or owner assessments of lameness. There was a treatment/time effect when assessing veterinary pain scores; however, post-hoc analysis suggests no observable benefit of treatment compared with the placebo group at any time point.  相似文献

A procedure for optimal production or isolation of parvoviruses was found to be as follows: Indicator cells were infected in suspension using a cell concentration associated with full monolayer not before 3-4 days. The infected monolayer was passaged at similar cell concentrations, and the procedure repeated for up to 28 days culture of samples in this way. The optimal serum supplement used was free of or had low haemagglutination inhibitory activity to the virus studied and was used at minimal concentrations. Alternatively it was possible to remove serum supplement inhibitory activity by treatment with MnCl2/heparin dialysed and sterilized before use as serum supplement.  相似文献

Viruses commonly cause gastrointestinal illnesses in dogs and cats that range in severity from mild diarrhoea to malignant neoplasia. Perpetual evolution of viruses is reflected in changing disease patterns, so that familiar viruses are sometimes discovered to cause new or unexpected diseases. For example, canine parvovirus (CPV) has regained the ability to infect felids and cause a panleucopenia-like illness. Feline panleucopenia virus (FPV) has been shown to cause fading in young kittens and has recently been implicated as a possible cause of feline idiopathic cardiomyopathy. Molecular scrutiny of viral diseases sometimes permits deeper understanding of pathogenesis and epizootiology. Feline gastrointestinal lymphomas have not, in the past, been strongly associated with retroviral infections, yet some of these tumours harbour retroviral proviruses. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) may play a role in lymphomagenesis, even in cats diagnosed as uninfected using conventional criteria. There is strong evidence that feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) can also be oncogenic. The variant feline coronaviruses that cause invariably-fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) arise by sporadic mutation of an ubiquitous and only mildly pathogenic feline enteric coronavirus (FECV); a finding that has substantial management implications for cat breeders and veterinarians. Conversely, canine enteric coronavirus (CECV) shows considerable genetic and antigenic diversity but causes only mild, self-limiting diarrhoea in puppies. Routine vaccination against this virus is not recommended. Although parvoviruses, coronaviruses and retroviruses are the most important known viral causes of canine and feline gastrointestinal disease, other viruses play a role. Feline and canine rotaviruses have combined with human rotaviruses to produce new, reassortant, zoonotic viruses. Some companion animal rotaviruses can infect humans directly. Undoubtedly, further viral causes of canine and feline gastrointestinal disease await discovery.  相似文献

Background

Neoplasia may cause hypoglycemia in different species including the horse, but hypoglycemia has not previously been reported in the horse associated with gastrointestinal stromal tumours.

Case presentation

A case of a gastrointestinal stromal tumour in a Fjord pony with severe recurrent hypoglycemia is presented. The mechanism causing the hypoglycemia was not established.

Conclusion

This case indicates that a gastrointestinal stromal tumour may cause hypoglycemia also in the horse.  相似文献

A 5-year-old female spayed Shetland Sheepdog Mix dog was evaluated for a history of recent seizure activity, progressive hind limb ataxia, polyuria, and polydipsia and no history of gastrointestinal signs. Physical examination findings included conscious proprioceptive deficits, ataxia, and anterior uveitis along with a hypermature cataract in the right eye. Results of a CBC, serum biochemical profile, urinalysis, and computed tomography scan of the brain were unremarkable. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed marked eosinophilic pleocytosis and rare organisms consistent with Prototheca spp within neutrophils and macrophages. On postmortem histologic examination, mononuclear inflammation and numerous intralesional algal organisms, similar to those seen on the cytologic preparation of CSF, were found in the brain, eyes, kidneys, and heart. Abnormalities were not detected on gross and histologic examination of the gastrointestinal tract. Cultures of CSF and subdural/olfactory bulb, but not intestinal tract, yielded growth of Prototheca spp, and PCR analysis and DNA sequencing confirmed the organism as Prototheca zopfii genotype 2. We have reported a rare case of disseminated protothecosis that was diagnosed by evaluation of CSF in a dog presented with neurologic signs and no overt enteric disease. Protothecosis should be considered as a rare cause of seizures, even in the absence of obvious enteric signs, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of eosinophilic pleocytosis.  相似文献

Twelve ruminally cannulated steers (Angus x Holstein; average initial BW = 533 +/- 3.28 kg) were randomly allotted to one of three treatments (four steers/treatment) to evaluate the use of pretanned leather shavings as a component of a protein supplement for steers grazing dormant intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium Host). Steers were allotted to one of three treatments: 1) no supplement (control); 2) supplementation intraruminally at 0700 with soybean meal at .2% of BW (as-fed basis); 3) supplementation intraruminally with soybean meal and pretanned leather shavings (17:8 ratio, respectively) at .16% of BW (as-fed basis). Supplements were formulated so that intakes were isonitrogenous and were placed intraruminally once daily (0700). Sampling periods were conducted February 3 to 16 and February 17 to March 5, 1995. In situ organic matter disappearance of the soybean meal supplement was greater (P > .05) than that of the leather shavings supplement at all incubation times (1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 48 h). Data suggested that pretanned leather shavings within the leather shavings supplement were only 25% degradable within the rumen. Forage OM intake (control = 12.7, soybean meal = 12.7, and leather shavings = 13.4 g/kg of BW), grazing time, and grazing efficiency were not altered (P > .10) by supplementation or type of supplement provided but did increase between the February and March samplings. Total intake was increased (P = .09) with supplementation and reflected the addition of the protein supplements. Particulate and fluid passage estimates were unaffected (P > .10) by the supplements; however, gastrointestinal fill increased (P = .01) between the February and March samplings. Ruminal pH was lower (P = .04) and ruminal NH3 N concentration was greater (P = .02) for supplemented steers than for control steers, and supplementation treatments did not differ (P > .10). Total VFA concentrations were increased (P = .01) by supplementation but were not affected by type of supplement provided (P > .10). Ruminal molar proportions of acetate and propionate and the ratio of these two VFA did not differ (P > .10) between supplementation types. Nonetheless, supplementation increased molar proportions of butyrate (P = .04), valerate (P = .02), and isovalerate (P = .05), and leather shavings supplementation increased (P = .10) isobutyrate proportions over those in steers supplemented with soybean meal. Combining pretanned leather shavings with soybean meal seemed to have no deleterious effects on forage intake, digesta passage, grazing behavior, or ruminal fermentation and seemed to provide effects similar to those of soybean meal alone.  相似文献

Six dogs with lornoxicam induced severe gastrointestinal bleeding are described. The ingested dose ranged between 0.5 - 5.1?mg/kg BW (median 0.63?mg/kg BW). The severity of the bloodloss anemia was moderate to severe with PCV values ranging between 12 - 27 % (median 16 %) and serum albumin concentrations between 12 - 22 g/l (median 16 g/l). One dog had evidence of chronic thrombocytopathia over 13 days and clinicopathologic findings of gastrointestinal bleeding over 55 days. None of the dogs developed kidney injuries. The clinical condition required transfusion of blood products in 5 of 6 cases. One dog with a perforated duodenal ulcer and septic peritonitis survived until discharge but had to be euthanized later on due to recrudescent clinical signs (hematemesis, melena). The median length of hospitalisation was 12 days (5 - 14). No correlation was seen between the ingested dose and severity of clinical signs. Lornoxicam ingestion leads to severe and longlasting gastrointestinal bleeding in the dog and requires immediate intensive therapy.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to report our experience with an absorbable haemostatic gauze product in 20 horses with traumatic or surgical haemorrhage. The product is made from oxidised, regenerated cellulose (ORC) and is approved for external use and currently being studied to control internal bleeding in surgical settings in human subjects. Treated horses were from both practice and university settings. Signalment, anatomic location, underlying cause of bleeding and outcome were recorded in the medical record. The size of gauze, approximate time until bleeding stopped, and pre- and post-ORC adjunctive treatments were also recorded. The ORC was used in a variety of anatomic locations, including castration site, foot, flank incisions, distal limb, tooth extraction sites and the perineal region. The bleeding stopped or slowed dramatically within 90 s in 15 of 20 cases. There were no recorded complications in any of the cases. While this clinical report does not attempt to prove efficacy of the product in horses, it does show that this ORC product, which has been approved for use as a haemostatic agent in human subjects, is safe and of practical value, and may be a useful and viable option for the control of haemorrhage in a variety of equine clinical settings.  相似文献

Background

Ingestion of sand can cause colic, diarrhoea and weight loss in horses, but these signs are unspecific and can have many other causes. The amount of sand that induces disease may vary between individuals. To avoid over-diagnosing, it is important to determine the amount of sand that can be found in horses without clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease. The aim of this study was to use previously suggested parameters for establishing a radiographic diagnosis of sand colic, and compare these findings between a sand colic group and a control group.

Methods

Abdominal radiographs were obtained in 30 horses with a complaint unrelated to the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, archived abdominal radiographs of 37 clinical cases diagnosed with sand impaction were investigated. The size of the mineral opacity indicative of sand in the abdomen was measured and graded according to a previously published protocol based on height and length. Location, homogeneity, opacity and number of sand accumulations were also recorded.

Results

Twenty out of 30 control horses (66%) had one or more sand accumulations. In the present study; height, length and homogeneity of the accumulations were useful parameters for establishing a diagnosis of sand colic. Radiographically defined intestinal sand accumulation grades of up to 2 was a common finding in horses with no clinical signs from the gastrointestinal tract whereas most of the clinical cases had much larger grades, indicating larger sand accumulations.

Conclusion

Further work to establish a reliable grading system for intestinal sand content is warranted, but a previously proposed grading system based on measurements of height and length may be an alternative for easy assessment of sand accumulations in the meantime. The present study indicates that a grade 1 – 2 sand accumulation in the intestine is a frequent finding in horses. When working up a case with clinical signs from the gastrointestinal tract, one or more accumulations of this grade should not be considered the cause until other possibilities have been ruled out.  相似文献
