ABSTRACT: We carried out mail and access point surveys to estimate the catch numbers, angling effort of recreational angling and the population of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka in Lake Toya in 1998 and 1999. The mail survey questions in questionnaires distributed to anglers with a recreational angling license included date of angling, caught fish species and size, and catch number. In the access point survey we also asked anglers if they had a license. We measured the fork length and weight of caught fish. The catch rate (catch number in a day by each angler) from both surveys showed no significant difference, suggesting no bias for the catch rate between surveys. The estimated total angling effort was 1760 people (1998), and 1516 people (1999). The estimated recreational catch was 28 889 (1998) and 5455 (1999), that is, two or three times larger than the commercial catch. The fish population was estimated by using the DeLury method as 60 262 (1998) and 10 806 (1999). The total exploitation rate was 62% (1998) and 78% (1999). The size of caught fish was much larger in 1999 than 1998 because of the difference in age composition. 相似文献

SUMMARY: This paper evaluates the stocking effectiveness of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou in Hokkaido, northern Japan, through a coast-wide two-stage sampling survey of commercial landings. From January to June 1994–1996, commercial landings of masu salmon at 33–36 fish markets were sampled at 7–10 days intervals, and 60 866–72 124 fish were examined for marks indicated by fin clips. Based on the survey data, numbers of total and hatchery-reared masu salmon landed were estimated. To examine the structure of the errors, stratification of fish markets was implemented on the basis of geography and magnitudes of landings, and the stratification improved accuracy and precision of the estimates. Accuracy of the estimated numbers of total fish was evaluated by being compared to the true numbers of masu salmon landings reported by fishermen's cooperative associations. Estimates of total masu salmon landings were within ± 10% of the true numbers. The estimated recovery rates (± SE) for hatchery-reared masu salmon smolts were variable ranging from 0.18 (± 0.06) to 3.50 (± 0.41)% among the stocked groups. An optimal sampling strategy was examined to obtain precise estimates for future studies. 相似文献

Pituitary gonadotropin (GTH) secreting cells and brain gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secreting neurons are known to be subjected to feedback control by gonadal steroid in teleosts. In masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou, salmon GnRH (sGnRH) neurons in the ventral telencephalon (VT) and the preoptic area (POA) are involved in the control of GTH cells because sGnRH synthesis in these areas is activated with gonadal maturation. In this study, we attempted to clarify mechanisms of feedback control of sGnRH neurons by gonadal steroids. We examined the effects of 17-methyltestosterone (MT) on sGnRH synthesis in yearling and 2-year-old female fish (which were immature during experimentation in May), and the effects of castration on sGnRH synthesis in underyearling precocious male fish in August. sGnRH synthesis in the POA, but not in the VT, was increased by MT administration in 2-year-old females only, indicating higher sensitivity to MT in the preoptic sGnRH neurons. Castration increased sGnRH synthesis in the VT but not in the POA. These results suggest that sGnRH neurons in the VT and those in the POA are differentially regulated by gonadal steroids. 相似文献

Densities of wild masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou Brevoort, were investigated before (late-September) and after (mid-November) autumnal habitat shifts in a small river in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Abundance of instream cover habitat formed by coarse woody debris, submerged vegetation and undercut banks was quantified. Density of 1+ and older masu salmon was significantly correlated with cover abundance in autumn, although cover was not significant for density of 0+ fish, indicating that clear-cut reaches were utilized by 0+ masu salmon in autumn. In early winter, densities of 0+ and 1+ and older masu salmon were both correlated with cover availability. These results suggest that the amount of cover habitat is an important regulator for densities of juvenile masu salmon during winter. 相似文献

Abstract – To describe in detail the population genetic structure of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou , seven anadromous populations in the Atsuta River were investigated by analysis of eight polymorphic microsatellite loci. Exact test and genetic differentiation ( F ST ) revealed that significant differentiation was observed at the within-river scale. Principal components analysis revealed that the spatial pattern of genetic composition was related to geographical location of each population. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between genetic differentiation and geographical distance, indicating that dispersal is less likely to occur between distant populations. The results of this study imply that masu salmon have potential to show clear genetic structure at the microgeographical scale (21 km) due to precise homing behaviour. 相似文献

The authors previously reported that the number and size of juxtaglomerular cells (JGCs) in the kidney increased during smoltification
in masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou. In the present study, the effects of cortisol and/or angiotensin (Ang) II ([Asn1, Val5]-Ang II) on the JGC number and size in masu salmon were examined to elucidate hormonal regulation of the changes in the JGC
number and size during smoltification. These hormones were injected intraperitoneally every 2 days for a total of 6 injections.
There was a significant increase in the JGC number and size with time following the start of the experiment in cortisol- and
cortisol + Ang II-treated groups and no significant change in control and Ang II-treated groups. On both days 5 and 11, the
JGC number and size in the cortisol-treated group were significantly large compared to those of control and Ang II-treated
groups, respectively. The JGC number and size in the cortisol + Ang II-treated group were significantly large compared to
those of control on both days 5 and 11, and those of the Ang II-treated group only on day 11, respectively. On the other hand,
there was no significant difference in the JGC number and size between the Ang II-treated and control groups and between the
cortisol- and cortisol + Ang II-treated groups during the experiment, respectively. The means of the JGC number and size in
cortisol-treated group on day 11 were close to those previously reported in smolt. These results suggest that cortisol induces
an increase in JGC number and size during smoltification in masu salmon.

Abstract Recreational shore angling in the Atlantic Ocean between Moledo and Aveiro (Portugal) was examined using roving creel surveys (March/September 2001). Cooperation was high (90% of 2310 anglers approached). At least 39 species of fish were caught at a rate of approximately 0.5 fish angler h−1 . An estimated 7319 kg of Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), with 45.6% below the minimum legal size, and 2040 kg of sea breams (genus Diplodus ), correspond to 5.75% and 1.19% of the commercial landings in the same geographical area, respectively. The results shed light on a number of issues relevant to integrated coastal management, including temporal and spatial distribution of fishing effort, species caught, sizes of fish, catch rates, and factors influencing catches and angler satisfaction. Whilst the results suggest that the catches of sea breams and sea bass by day-time recreational shore angling in northern Portugal are small compared with commercial fishing, other recreational activities, such as boat fishing and spear-fishing, must be assessed. 相似文献

This study investigated the in vivo and in vitro effects of Rhizopus (filamentous fungus) extract (RU) in masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou Brevoort. Underyearling fish were fed with RU for 16 months. Monthly changes in body growth, gonadal maturation and serum levels of sex steroids were monitored. Gonads were also incubated at 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 μg RU mL−1 Leibovitz's L‐15 medium for 18 h. The levels of steroids in serum and cultured medium were measured. It was determined that RU‐fed immature and mature males, when compared with control groups, showed significantly higher body growth during spring, summer and the spawning period. Similarly, immature RU‐fed females showed significantly higher fork length and body weight in autumn, spring and summer. Furthermore, RU‐fed males showed significantly higher levels of serum testosterone (T) and 11‐ketotestosterone (11‐KT) levels in the pre‐spawning season, and 17α, 20β‐dihydroxy‐4‐pregnen‐3‐one (DHP) in the spawning season. In vitro RU incubation of gonads showed a dose‐dependent and significant increase in T, 11‐KT, oestradiol‐17β and DHP release in the medium. It appears that the causes of enhanced body growth and increased steroid production herein observed in salmonids are the physiologically active substances that may be present in the mycelium of the fungus. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Ten sibship masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou masou families were produced to estimate the heritability of the number of abdominal vertebrae (AV) and caudal vertebrae (CV), and the genetic correlation between the two traits were calculated. The AV and CV of both the parents and their offspring were counted separately, and the heritability was estimated by performing parent–offspring regression analysis. The mean vertebral number of the offspring differed among families although they were reared under identical water temperature conditions and had the same parental vertebral number type in crossbreeding. The heritabilities were estimated as 0.65 for AV and 0.84 for CV. The genetic correlation between the number of AV and CV was calculated as −0.92. These results suggest that AV and CV are governed by genetic components even when the fish are reared under identical environmental conditions, and the total vertebral number is expected to converge within a certain range. It is necessary to analyze separately the variations in the number of AV and CV when investigating the vertebral number in masu salmon. 相似文献

Changes in serum thyroxine (T4), estradiol-17β (E2) and testosterone (T) levels during the parr-smolt transformation (smoltification) were investigated in the masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) in 1985 and 1987. T4 showed a peak in levels at the early stage of smoltification and E2 and T levels peaked almost at the same time. There were no significant differences between the concentrations of serum hormones
in female and males. During smoltification, germ cells in the peri-nucleolus and spermatogonia stage were present in the ovary
and testis, respectively. These results suggest that E2 and T may be involved in smoltification in the masu salmon. 相似文献

Abstract Patterns of change in angler participation and demographics were examined for the recreational Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. An analysis of a licence stub return system, 1994–2010, showed a significant decline in resident angler participation, but this was not consistent across all regions of the Province. Mean age of anglers increased significantly, varying from 39.0 years in 1994 to 46.5 years by 2010. In some regions, mean age rose by over 12 years since the mid‐1990s, reflecting a decline in the recruitment of younger anglers. The return rate of angler logs also declined over time and was found to vary by age, sex and area of angler residence. Women and older anglers, and those living in specific rural areas had a greater tendency to return a record of their catch history than men and younger anglers. Identified changes in participation and demographics, which can affect exploitation and ultimately abundance, could be used to develop management measures that would maximise both harvest and socio‐economic benefits to the varied users of the resource. 相似文献

Abstract A choice experiment was developed to assess how the value of the recreational sea angling experience in South West England would change as characteristics of the angling experience changed. Catch levels of anglers' favourite species are extremely important, until they reach around six fish per day, at which point anglers become satiated. Anglers are discerning about the species they catch – they would pay only a third as much for increased catches of non-favourite species than for the favourite species. Overall, increasing the size of individual fish would have a larger impact than increasing the catch per day, although this varies by species. In contrast, the presence or absence of rod or bag limits and the environmental quality of a site are only minor factors in anglers' decisions on where to fish. These results will help fisheries managers to identify their goals with respect to sea angling. 相似文献

Abstract The survival of small-sized (<50.8 cm) chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), and coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kitsutch (Walbaum), caught by sport fishing was determined to assess the potential for increasing the size limit for these fish. Fishermen were recently catching smaller salmon than in the 1970s, but salmon growth rates had not changed. To be an effective management option, the survival rate of hooked and returned fish must be high. The overall survival rates were high: 76% for chinook salmon and 70% for coho salmon. There was no significant difference in survival of the coho salmon with size of hook used ( P = 0.31). Any mortality among fish was generally acute; fish hooked deep in the mouth or gills generally bled and died shortly after capture. Fish hooked in the gills had a significantly greater mortality ( P = 0.0002). The overall high survival rate for these species was the result of a small proportion of fish being hooked in the gills or deep in the mouth. Since the survival rate of the salmon was high, the size limit could be increased to allow smaller fish to grow to sizes preferred by sport fishermen. 相似文献

niches of native species through interspecific competition, or they avoid this intense interspecific competition by making
use of minimal niche overlap with the native species. In this study, we considered how a nonnative salmonid species, the rainbow
trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, established a population in the presence of the native salmonid species, the masu salmon O. masou, in Hokkaido, Japan. Circumstantial field evidence shows that the masu salmon exceeds the rainbow trout in abundance and
suggests that these species use different types of cover habitat (rainbow trout abundance increases with increasing abundance
of large woody debris aggregates, whereas masu salmon abundance increases with increasing abundance of undercut banks). These
results imply that the rainbow trout established a population due to minimal niche overlap with the masu salmon, and not by

Potential impact of climate warming on recreational fishing opportunities for Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Newfoundland, Canada 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Potential impacts of climate warming on recreational fishing opportunities were addressed by assessing the frequency and extent that Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., rivers in Newfoundland have been closed over a 25-year period (1975 to 1999) because of warm water temperatures and low water levels. On average, approximately 28% of all salmon rivers were temporarily closed annually, with over 70% affected in some years. This has resulted in a loss of 35–65% of the potential fishing days available in some salmon fishing areas with the collective 1995 to 1999 period being impacted the most over the past two decades. Geographically, west and south-west coastal rivers were affected less from environmental closures than east and some south coast fishing areas. A trend for increased closures of rivers related to environmental reasons could reduce the economic importance of the recreational salmon fishery and also make it more difficult to assess the status of Atlantic salmon stocks, which is a requirement for conservation of the resource. 相似文献

Abstract An assessment of the recreational fishery in north-west Trinidad was made by questioning participants about the principal fishing methods used, location of activities, catches, effort and cost of fishing. Surface handline methods (live baiting [à la vive] and trolling) and rod and line (banking) were the most common methods used and were pursued mainly in the summer months (April to August). Total fish landings from the fishery were estimated at 1000 t year-1, equivalent to about 10% of commercial catches for Trinidad. The principal species caught were kingfish, Scomberomorus cavalla (Cuv.), carite, Scomberomorus brasiliensis (Cuv.), cavalli, Caranx hippos (L.), snappers, Lutjanus spp., and groupers, Epinephelus spp. Many of the fishermen sold their catch to offset the costs of the fishing trip and thus competed with commercial fishermen. Recommendations for monitoring and possibly regulating the fishery through a licensing scheme are made. 相似文献

Abstract Snapper, Pagrus auratus (Forester), is an important recreational species in marine waters of Victoria, Australia. This study estimated survival for compulsorily released undersized P. auratus by holding fish in cages and tanks for 3 days. In all, 620 P. auratus caught by angling were assessed for post-release survival and 200 additional fish were used as controls. The survival rate was greater for shallow-hooked (97%) than deep-hooked (48%) P. auratus . Post-mortems showed that hooking injuries to the throat and/or gill area caused most deaths, while piercing of the heart also caused mortalities. Removing deeply ingested hooks decreased survival. To estimate survival of P. auratus across the Victorian fishery, this study's results should be combined with estimates of shallow-hooking rates in the fishery. Shallow-hooking rate estimates would quantify the impact of the low survival rate found for deep-hooked fish. 相似文献
