An eight-year-old, neutered, male border collie dog was presented with a six-week history of left ocular discomfort and a raised, red mass at the lateral limbus. The right eye had been enucleated approximately 12 months previously following suspected trauma when the eye had become red and painful. The mass was excised using superficial keratectomy/sclerectomy and the surgery site was treated with strontium-90 beta radiation. Histopathological findings were consistent with a diagnosis of haemangiosarcoma. Immunohistochemical staining showed uniform expression of CD31 in neoplastic cells, confirming their endothelial origin. Two further treatments with strontium-90 beta radiation were applied to the surgical site at weekly intervals. Twenty-six weeks after surgery, a second, raised, red limbal mass became apparent at the medial limbus of the left eye. Surgical excision and adjuvant strontium-90 beta plesiotherapy were performed as described for the initial tumour. Routine histopathological analysis confirmed haemangiosarcoma at this site. Eighty-six weeks following the initial presentation, no recurrence of ocular haemangiosarcoma was evident.  相似文献

A 12-year-old, 25 kg, intact male St Bernard crossbreed was presented for treatment of a 538 mm ulcerated tumour on the dorsal tongue. Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed a plasmacytoma. The dog staged negative for evidence of local metastatic or systemic disease. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment with one 150 Gy dose of radiation delivered with strontium-90 plesiotherapy was performed. Side effects were not noted and there was no visible evidence of tumour remaining at 2 months and 1 year after therapy.  相似文献

Strontium-90 plesiotherapy is a form of very superficial radiotherapy that is most commonly used as part of the management of ocular and periocular squamous cell carcinomas in the horse. Although it can be an extremely effective treatment, with the ability to deliver very high doses of radiation to the tumour without affecting the surrounding tissues, the penetration is only a few millimetres, which limits its use in equine medicine to very specific situations. In addition, the availability of strontium-90 plesiotherapy is limited to specialist institutions due to the health and safety and security concerns of accessing a high activity sealed source.  相似文献

Melanocytic tumours are common in grey horses. Large tumours can obstruct the rectum, or prepuce, inhibit food intake and impinge upon the upper airway. Surgical excision is locally curative, but is controversial for large or confluent tumours. Limited information on outcome following surgical excision of large melanomas is available. The objective of this study was to report outcome following surgical excision of large (≥4 cm) melanocytic tumours in horses. Our hypothesis was that surgical excision of large (≥4 cm) single and coalescing melanomas would be locally curative. Medical records were reviewed and cases that underwent excision of a single or coalescing melanoma, with at least one lesion ≥4 cm in diameter, included. Follow‐up information was obtained a minimum of 12 months post‐surgery from owners and referring veterinarians via telephone interviews, questionnaire, or direct examination. A total of 48 cases were identified; 38 horses with follow‐up were included in the study. Tumours involved the parotid, perianal or mid‐cervical regions, ventral tail base, prepuce, penis, ear, or thoracic inlet. There were no cases of tumour regrowth following excision. Post‐operative complications occurred in five cases and were easily resolved in all but one. Continued or new growth of distant melanocytic tumours occurred in 50% of cases. Results suggest that excision of large melanocytic tumours in horses is a viable treatment option that is locally curative with minimal complications.  相似文献

A 25 year-old American Paint gelding was referred to the Onderstepoort Academic Veterinary Hospital with an ulcerated lesion of nonpigmented skin at the right lateral aspect of the perianal region. An infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma was suspected. Surgical excision and ablation with sharp surgical excision and a diode laser was performed although complete excision was not possible due to the tumour location. Intralesional chemotherapy was performed at the completion of the surgical excision and continued in the post-operative period. Histological examination of the excised lesion confirmed a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma and revealed incomplete resection margins at the medial, dorsal and ventral aspects of the surgical site. The surgical site healed uneventfully and a re-examination at 6 months post-surgery revealed the gelding to have normal clinical parameters with no perianal lesions.  相似文献

Exercising upper airway endoscopic evaluation was performed in 7 horses with a history of poor performance after partial arytenoidectomy. Treadmill endoscopy revealed axial deviation of the ipsilateral aryepiglottic fold in all horses. Dynamic collapse of one or more additional upper airway structures was also observed. In 4 horses, laser resection of soft tissue structures that obstructed the upper airway was performed. After laser surgery, 3 horses raced and one performed adequately as a riding horse. Of the remaining 3 horses, 2 raced at a lower class and one performed adequately as a riding horse. In this population of horses, dynamic endoscopy of the upper airway was critical for case management. Based on our observations, horses post arytenoidectomy can have dynamic collapse of the ipsilateral aryepiglottic fold and laser resection of the fold may help resolve the performance problem.  相似文献

Upper airway pressure was measured during maximal exercise in 10 Thoroughbred racehorses with naturally occurring upper airway obstruction. Left laryngeal hemiplegia and arytenoid chondropathy resulted in substantial increases (30-40 cm H2O) in inspiratory upper airway pressure (Pl), whereas complicated aryepiglottic entrapment and subepiglottic cysts produced only modest increases (15 cm H2O) in Pl. Uncomplicated aryepiglottic entrapment and grade IV pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia produced only slight increases (3-5 cm H2O). In general, surgical procedures restored airway pressures to within normal limits. Subtotal arytenoidectomy improved but did not normalize airway pressures in horses with arytenoid chondropathy. Pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia appeared to have little effect on upper airway function.  相似文献

A 9-year-old female sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) was evaluated for a tissue mass near the marsupium. Ultrasonography identified a vascular mass originating from the right mammary gland. Fine-needle aspiration was suggestive of a malignant neoplasm. The glider was anesthetized and the tumor was removed, and this was followed by strontium-90 plesiotherapy to the tumor bed in an attempt to decrease local recurrence. Histopathology revealed an anaplastic mammary carcinoma. The glider was euthanized less than 14 days after the procedure owing to self-mutilation behavior of unknown etiology. This report is the first to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostics, therapeutics, and treatment response for a sugar glider with mammary neoplasia.  相似文献

An adult Quarter Horse gelding (Case 1) was evaluated for tachypnoea and acute dysphagia. A 20-year-old Quarter Horse gelding (Case 2) was evaluated for respiratory stertor and severe, acute swelling of the head in the submandibular region. A physical examination, complete blood count, blood chemistry, upper airway endoscopy, and peripheral blood Anaplasma phagocytophilum polymerase chain reaction were completed for both horses. Both horses tested positive for A. phagocytophilum. The upper airway endoscopy for Case 1 revealed a feed contaminated pharynx, absent swallowing reflex, and left laryngeal hemiplagia. The upper airway endoscopy for Case 2 revealed severe diffuse pharyngeal swelling occluding the airway. Due to increased respiratory effort in Case 2, a tracheotomy was performed. In both horses, treatment consisted of intravenous oxytetracycline 6.6 mg/kg bwt i.v. q. 24 h for 2–3 days followed by minocycline 4 mg/kg bwt per os q. 12 h for 10–14 days. Both horses made full recoveries.  相似文献

An 11-year-old Campolina horse was referred to the Veterinary Hospital due to the presence of an exophytic mass located in the rostral region of the mandible. Radiographic evaluation showed no evidence of tumour infiltration in the underlying mandibular bone, and the histopathology and immunohistochemical evaluations confirmed the diagnosis of fibromatous epulis. The treatment included surgical excision of the mass, followed by extensive curettage of the underlying mandibular bone. Complete healing of the wound was evidenced 60 days after the procedure; however, relapse was reported by the owner between 1 and 3 years after surgery.  相似文献

An Arabian mare was referred due to a 4-month history of bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, which was unresponsive to multiple courses of antimicrobials and intravenous sodium iodide. Digital radiographs revealed multiple variably sized nodular opacities within the nasopharynx. Upper airway endoscopy showed multiple, ulcerated granulomatous masses originating from the walls of the nasopharynx. Repeat culture of the exudate and from endoscopic biopsies grew only a mixed bacterial population. Standing endoscopic guided laser excision of two granulomas was performed and histopathology and culture from the center of a surgically excised granuloma identified Cryptococcus terrestris. Treatment with fluconazole (14 mg/kg bwt per os once then 5 mg/kg bwt per os q. 12 h) was administered for a total of 11 weeks. Follow-up endoscopic examination was used to guide therapy duration, and the horse has since returned to competition and remained free of infection for >1.5 years. Establishing a diagnosis of cryptococcal infection was difficult in this horse despite multiple culture attempts. This is the first report of Cryptococcus terrestris infection in a horse and treatment with oral fluconazole after surgical de-bulking was successful.  相似文献

Surgical resection of solid tumours, especially in early stages of disease, remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment in dogs and cats. There are numerous publications that show a strong association between local tumour control and outcome. To achieve local control in some cases radiation therapy and surgery are combined, with radiation therapy being delivered in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting. The objective of the study was to report acute toxicity and surgical site complication data in dogs that received a short-course pre-operative (SCPO) radiation therapy protocol, followed by surgical excision for various solid tumours. Medical records were reviewed, and data was analysed retrospectively. Dogs were included if a dermal or subcutaneous solid tumour was treated with SCPO radiation therapy and then was resected on the last day of radiation or 2–3 weeks later. A total of 34 dogs with 35 primary tumours were included. Acute radiation toxicity was diagnosed in 14 sites (40%). VRTOG scores were grade 1 in 50%, grade 2 in 43%, and grade 3 in 7%. Surgical site complications were identified in 17% of dogs with an overall surgical site infection rate of 11%. According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, two dogs required medical intervention (grade 2), 1 dog required surgical intervention under general anaesthesia (grade 3b), and 1 dog died as a result of complications (grade 5). Logistic regression analysis found that anatomic site was significantly associated with complications, where tumours located on the extremity was protective (P = .02; OR 0.06).  相似文献

A 11-year-old, female, spayed greyhound was presented with a haemorrhagic discharge from the vulva. Clinical examination, vaginoscopy and a computed tomography scan showed an irregular egg-sized mass in the region of the cervix and uterine stump. An endoscopic grab biopsy (incisional) suggested a malignant mesenchymal tumour. Following this, surgical excision of the cranial vagina, cervix and the uterine remnant was performed. The final diagnosis of haemangiosarcoma was based on histological examination of the larger excisional biopsy specimen and was confirmed by positive immunolabelling of the neoplastic endothelial cells for the von Willebrand factor.  相似文献

A 5-year-old male Australian bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with a 2-month history of a periocular mass. The clinical evaluation included a physical examination, hematology, biochemistry, and radiographs. The mass was treated surgically and diagnosed as myxosarcoma. Strontium-90 plesiotherapy was attempted, but the mass recurred 5 mo later.  相似文献

A 9‐year‐old Arab stallion was presented for haematuria and a haemorrhagic mass on the urethral process of the penis. Clinical examination and surgical excision suggested a tumour of the penis, histologically confirmed as a haemangiosarcoma. The stallion was successfully treated with surgical excision; however, successful breeding has not been achieved thus far (28 months). To the authors' knowledge, haemangiosarcoma of the equine penis has not previously been described.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical findings in 52 racehorses with axial deviation of the aryepiglottic folds (ADAF) and to report outcome in 33 of these horses after either rest or transendoscopic laser excision of aryepiglottic fold tissue. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. Animal or SAMPLE POPULATION: Racehorses admitted for high-speed treadmill (HST) evaluation of poor performance. METHODS: Medical records and videotapes of resting and exercising videoendoscopic examinations were reviewed. Racing performance records and owner or trainer interviews, at least 1 year after HST examination, were used to compare results after either surgical management or rest in 33 horses with ADAF and no other upper-airway abnormalities. RESULTS: ADAF occurred in 6% of horses evaluated for poor performance. No breed or gender predisposition existed, but horses with ADAF were younger than the overall population evaluated on the HST. Of 52 horses with ADAF, 19 horses had at least one other upper-airway abnormality. There was no apparent association between ADAF and other causes of dynamic upper-respiratory obstruction. Surgical correction was successfully performed in standing or anesthetized horses without complications. When ADAF was the only upper-airway obstruction, 75% of horses that had surgery and 50% of rested horses had objective improvement in performance. Owners and trainers also perceived greater improvement in performance in horses that had surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Whereas surgical management of ADAF is recommended, clinical experience indicated that it is not required to resolve ADAF in all horses. However, owners and trainers of horses that had surgery were more satisfied with outcome than those with horses managed conservatively. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Diagnosis of ADAF can only be made by videoendoscopic evaluation during high-speed exercise. Transendoscopic laser excision of the collapsing portion of the aryepiglottic folds can be performed safely in standing horses and results in resolution of airway obstruction and rapid return to training.  相似文献

Objective  To describe feline periocular cutaneous mast cell tumor (CMCT) clinical features, rates of local tumor recurrence and metastases, and cat survival time following surgical excision.
Animals studied  Thirty-three cats with periocular CMCTs.
Procedures  Medical records of cats diagnosed with periocular CMCTs were reviewed; cats were included if CMCTs were surgically excised and the diagnosis confirmed by histopathology. The appearance, size, location and histopathology findings of CMCTs were recorded. Rates of local recurrence, metastasis, and survival time following surgical excision were collected when available.
Results  All periocular CMCTs were restricted to the eyelids. In addition to surgical excision, three cats were treated with adjunctive therapy (strontium-90 irradiation or cryotherapy) intraoperatively. Local tumor control was achieved in 22/23 cats with a minimum follow-up of 30 days (median follow-up time of 711 days); one cat developed disseminated CMCTs but no local recurrence. Cats with periocular CMCTs had a median survival time of 945 days. Metastatic disease involving peripheral lymph nodes or abdominal viscera was not detected in any cat at any time during the study. All periocular CMCTs were classified as low-grade based on histopathology, and complete excision was achieved in approximately 50% of cases.
Conclusions  Surgical excision of periocular CMCTs in cats is an effective treatment option with rare local recurrence and metastases, even following incomplete surgical excision.  相似文献

Feline head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a loco‐regional disease harbouring a poor prognosis. The complex anatomic location precludes aggressive surgical resection and tumours recur within weeks to few months. Response to chemotherapy and local control after radiation therapy has been disappointing. In this study, a multimodal approach including medical treatment (thalidomide, piroxicam and bleomycin), radiation therapy (accelerated, hypofractionated protocol) and surgery was attempted in six cats. Treatment was well tolerated. Three cats with sublingual SCC were alive and in complete remission at data analysis closure after 759, 458 and 362 days. One cat with laryngeal SCC died of renal lymphoma after 51 days and the other with maxillary SCC died of a primary lung tumour 82 days after diagnosis. In both cats, the SCC was in complete remission. Only one cat developed metastases after 144 days. These encouraging preliminary results merit further evaluation in future trials.  相似文献

Congenital bilateral choanal atresia was corrected surgically in a neonatal foal. Presenting clinical signs included complete obstruction of the upper airway, which had been relieved by tracheotomy. The diagnosis was confirmed by endoscopic examination and contrast radiography. Bilateral nasal flaps were used to gain access to the caudal nasal cavity, allowing removal of obstructive tissue and restoration of normal respiration. Malocclusion developed secondary to surgical intervention and resultant damage to suture lines of developing flat bones of the skull. Nine months postoperatively, the asynchronous growth of the mandible and maxilla had not resulted in difficulty during mastication. Respiration, although audible during periods of exercise, was acceptable to the owners.  相似文献

Lymphoma is a relatively uncommon neoplasm in the horse; however, it is considered the most common neoplasia of the equine haemolymphatic system. Limited reports of adnexal lymphoma have been documented in the literature, with no known reports of recurrence nearly a decade after mass excision. The objective is to describe a case of recurrent adnexal lymphoma in a 20-year-old Quarter Horse gelding presented to the Ophthalmology service at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital (UFVH) for evaluation of a solitary subconjunctival mass of the right eye (OD). A focal, pink, fleshy mass associated with the dorsomedial bulbar conjunctiva was noted. An excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathology revealed lymphoma with clean margins. The client declined staging and further therapy at the initial visit. Approximately 8 years later, the horse began to exhibit intermittent mild to moderate diffuse swelling of the conjunctiva OD. Six months after onset, the swelling worsened acutely and was accompanied by severe swelling of the left conjunctiva (OS). The horse then returned to UFVH and was diagnosed with diffuse, bilateral conjunctival lymphoma. Humane euthanasia was elected. T cell lymphoma was confirmed with immunohistochemistry performed post-mortem. At necropsy, neoplastic tissue was observed throughout the adnexal and ocular tissues of both eyes and in the submandibular lymph nodes. Adnexal lymphoma is an uncommon neoplasm in the horse. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first documentation of a nodular adnexal lymphoma that involved an 8-year period without recurrence followed by development of diffuse, bilateral disease. Typically, surgical excision of the nodular form of lymphoma involving the extraocular tissues yields an improved prognosis compared with the diffuse form of the disease. Further investigation is necessary to determine if nodular forms of adnexal lymphoma represent early stages of diffuse extraocular or systemic disease.  相似文献
