Breed additive and non‐additive effects plus heritabilities and repeatabilities for milk yield per lactation (LMY), milk yield per day (DMY), lactation length (LL), annual milk yield (AMY), annual milk yield per metabolic body weight (AMYBW) and cow weight at calving (BW) were estimated for 5464 lactation records collected from purebred Boran (B), Friesian (F), and crosses of Friesian and Jersey (J) breeds with the Boran breed raised in the tropical highlands of Ethiopia. Single trait analysis was carried out by using two equivalent repeatability animal models. In the first model the genotype was fitted as a fixed group effect, while in the second model the genotype was substituted by breed additive, heterotic and recombination effects fitted as fixed covariates. Both the F and J breed additive effects, measured as a deviation from the B breed were significant (p < 0.01) for all traits, except for BW of the J. The F and J additive contributions were 2774 ± 81 and 1473 ± 362 kg for LMY, 7.1 ± 0.2 and 4.8 ± 0.8 kg for DMY, 152 ± 7 and 146 ± 31 days for LL, 2345 ± 71 and 1238 ± 319 kg for AMY, 20.6 ± 0.9 and 18.9 ± 4.3 kg for AMYBW, and 140 ± 4 and ?21 ± 22 kg (p > 0.05) for BW. The heterotic contributions to the crossbred performance were also positive and significant (p < 0.01) for all traits. The F1 heterosis expressed as a deviation from the mid‐parent values were 22 and 66% for LMY, 11 and 20% for DMY, 29 and 29% for LL, 21 and 64% for AMY, 42 and 42% for AMYBW, and 2% (p < 0.05) and 11% for BW for the F × B and J × B crosses, respectively. The recombination effect estimated for the F × B crosses was negative and significant for LMY (?526 ± 192 kg, p < 0.01), DMY (?3.0 ± 0.4 kg, p < 0.001), AMY (?349 ± 174 kg, p < 0.05) and BW (?68 ± 11 kg, p < 0.001). For the J × B crosses the recombination loss was significant and negative only for DMY (?2.2 ± 0.7 kg, p < 0.05) and BW (?33 ± 17 kg, p < 0.05). The direct heritabilities (h2) estimated for LMY, DMY, LL, AMY and AMYBW were 0.24 ± 0.04, 0.19 ± 0.03, 0.13 ± 0.03, 0.23 ± 0.04 and 0.17 ± 0.05, respectively. Based on the genetic parameters estimated, the best breeding strategy to increased milk production under highland Ethiopian conditions is to apply selection on purebred base populations (Boran and Friesian) and then crossing them to produce F1 dairy cows. However, for breeding decision based on total dairy merit, further investigations are needed for traits such as milk quality, reproduction, longevity and survival.

The study was conducted to assess early-expressed reproductive traits of Boran cattle and their crosses with Jersey and Holstein Friesian (HF). The traits studied were age at first services (AFS), number of services for first conception, age at first calving (AFC), first dry period (FDP), first calving interval (FCI), and first service period (FSP). Genetic group and period of birth/calving had a significant (p?<?0.05) effect on reproductive traits. The Boran cattle were inferior to HF or Jersey crosses. First crosses (F 1) for Jersey and Boran (50 % Jersey: 50 % Boran) showed a significantly (p?<?0.05) younger AFS (by 7.25 months) and AFC (by 10.75 months), had shorter FCI (by 63.27 days), FDP (by 61.13 days), and FSP (by 60.3 days), and needed less (by 0.35) numbers of services per first conception as compared to the Boran cattle. The F 1 for Jersey and Boran (50 % Jersey: 50 % Boran) crosses showed better performance than the F 1 for HF and Boran (50 % HF: 50 % Boran). Heritability values for AFS and AFC were the highest and were estimated at 0.51?±?0.10 and 0.49?±?0.13, respectively, and lowest heritability was recorded for FDP (0.02?±?020) and FSP (0.10?±?0.29). The genetic correlation was highest (0.10?±?0.20) between AFS and AFC and was lowest (?0.01?±?0.66) between FCI and FSP. The breed additive for Jersey was only significant (p?<?0.01) for AFS and AFC. The crossing of HF with Boran cattle has desirably reduced 9.16?±?2.88 months in AFS; the corresponding reduction in AFS was 3.49?±?3.59 months by crossing with Jersey. The performance comparisons and genetic and crossbreeding parameters indicated that crossbreeding of Boran with HF or Jersey can improve reproductive performance.

Breed additive and non-additive effects, and heritabilities of birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), 6 months weight (SMWT), yearling weight (YWT), eighteen months weight (EWT), 2 years weight (TWT) and average daily weight gain from birth to 6 months (ADG1) and from 6 months to 2 years (ADG2) were estimated in Ethiopian Boran (B) cattle and their crosses with Holstein Friesian (F) in central Ethiopia. The data analysed were spread over 15 years. Ethiopian Boran were consistently lighter (p < 0.01) than the B-F crosses at all ages. Ethiopian Boran also gained lower weight than all the crosses. At birth, 50% F crosses were significantly (p < 0.01) lighter than all the other crosses. However, the differences in SMWT, YWT, EWT, TWT, ADG1 and ADG2 were all non-significant among the crosses. The individual additive breed differences between B and F breeds were positive and significant (p < 0.01) for all traits. The individual heterosis effects were significant (p < 0.05) for all traits except WWT for which the effect was non-significant. The maternal heterosis effects were significant (p < 0.01) for BWT (2.5 kg) and WWT (-3.0 kg). The heritability estimates for all traits in B and crosses were generally moderate to high indicating that there is scope for genetic improvement through selection. Selection within B and crossbreeding should be the strategy to enhance the growth performance under such production systems.

Objective

To compare the cardiopulmonary effects of low and high doses of fentanyl before and after the correction of bradycardia in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs.

Study design

Prospective, randomized crossover trial.

Animals

Eight healthy male Beagle dogs weighing 11.1 ± 1.3 kg [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] and aged approximately 1 year.

Methods

The dogs were anesthetized with isoflurane [1.3 × minimum alveolar concentration (MAC)] on two occasions and fentanyl was administered intravenously; either low-dose fentanyl, loading dose (33 μg kg–1) and infusion (0.2 μg kg–1 minute–1) or a high-dose, loading dose (102 μg kg–1) and infusion (0.8 μg kg–1 minute–1). Cardiopulmonary variables were measured at three time points in equipotent isoflurane concentrations (1.3 MAC): before fentanyl administration (ISO), during fentanyl-induced bradycardia (ISO–F) and after administration of glycopyrrolate normalized heart rate (ISO–FNHR). Data are mean ± SD.

Results

Heart rate and cardiac index (CI) decreased and systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) increased at ISO–F in both treatments. Bradycardia and vasoconstriction at ISO–F were greater in high than in low-dose fentanyl (42 ± 7 versus 57 ± 15 beats minute–1 and 3457 ± 1108 versus 2528 ± 968 dyne second cm–5 m–2), respectively. Oxygen delivery index (DO2I) decreased only during high-dose fentanyl. CI and DO2I were higher in both treatments at ISO–FNHR than at ISO–F; however, they were higher only during the high-dose fentanyl than at ISO. SVRI was higher at ISO–F than at ISO and ISO–FNHR in both treatments, and was higher at ISO–F in the high than in the low-dose treatment.

Conclusions and clinical relevance

An overall improvement in cardiovascular function of dogs anesthetized with equipotent isoflurane doses (1.3 MAC) was observed after the treatment of bradycardia only with the high-dose fentanyl.

Summary Birth (4,197) and weaning (2,441) weight data on Boran, F1 Boran Friesian and three quarter Friesian calves as well as adjusted one-year (390), 2-year (177) and 3-year (364) weights on Boran cattle were analysed to estimate the influence of genetic and environmental factors.Boran, F1 and three quarter calves weighed 25·2, 25·4 and 25·7 kg at birth and 157·5, 176·7 and 179·9 kg at weaning, respectively. All factors included in the analysis and their interaction had significant effects on both traits with the exception of the effect of season of birth and its interaction with breed group on birth weight. Weight of Boran cattle at one-, 2- and 3-years of age were 179, 269 and 338 kg, respectively. Heritability values calculated on the basis of paternal half-sibs were 0·32, 0·24, 0·48, 0·29 and 0·24 for birth, weaning, one-year, 2-year and 3-year weights, respectively. The study indicated that F1 crosses were 12.2% heavier at weaning than Boran calves. Of the environmental factors considered, year of birth was found to be the major source of variation mainly due to variation in the amount of rainfall between years.
Productividad Del Ganado Boran Y Sus Cruces Friesian En El Rancho Abernossa, En El Vale De Rift De Etiopia. II. Desempeno En El Crecimiento

Productivite Du Betail Boran Et De Ses Croisement Avec La Race Frisonne Au Ranch D'abernossa, Dans La Vallee Du Rift (Ethiopie). II. Performance De Croissance

Malreddy, P. R., Coetzee, J. F., KuKanich, B., Gehring, R. Pharmacokinetics and milk secretion of gabapentin and meloxicam co‐administered orally in Holstein‐Friesian cows. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap.  36 , 14–20. Management of neuropathic pain in dairy cattle could be achieved by combination therapy of gabapentin, a GABA analog and meloxicam, an nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug. This study was designed to determine specifically the depletion of these drugs into milk. Six animals received meloxicam at 1 mg/kg and gabapentin at 10 mg/kg, while another group (n = 6) received meloxicam at 1 mg/kg and gabapentin at 20 mg/kg. Plasma and milk drug concentrations were determined over 7 days postadministration by HPLC/MS followed by noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analyses. The mean (±SD) plasma Cmax and Tmax for meloxicam (2.89 ± 0.48 μg/mL and 11.33 ± 4.12 h) were not much different from gabapentin at 10 mg/kg (2.87 ± 0.2 μg/mL and 8 ± 0 h). The mean (±SD) milk Cmax for meloxicam (0.41 ± 80.16 μg/mL) was comparable to gabapentin at 10 mg/kg (0.63 ± 0.13 μg/mL and 12 ± 6.69 h). The mean plasma and milk Cmax for gabapentin at 20 mg/kg P.O. were almost double the values at 10 mg/kg. The mean (±SD) milk to plasma ratio for meloxicam (0.14 ± 0.04) was lower than for gabapentin (0.23 ± 0.06). The results of this study suggest that milk from treated cows will have low drug residue concentration soon after plasma drug concentrations have fallen below effective levels.

Summary Two series of breed group comparisons for maternal traits were conducted at one location in Kenya. Data were collected on breed group series I for three years (Boran, 1/2 Red Poll-1/2 Boran (1/2 RP-1/2 B), 1/3 Red Poll-2/3 Boran (1/3 RP-2/3 B) and 2/3 Red Poll-1/3 Boran (2/3 RP-1/3 B)) and on breed group series II for five years (Boran, 1/2 Santa Gertrudis-1/2 Boran (1/2 SG-1/2 B) and 1/2 Red Poll-1/2 Boran (1/2 RP-1/2 B)). The advantage in calf weight weaned per year per cow calving of 15.4% for the mean of three Red Poll-Boran crossbred groups over the purebred Boran in breed group series I can probably be accounted for by maternal heterosis. Thus the Red Poll breed probably does not exceed the Boran breed in additive maternal genetic effects in the environment where these data were collected. But the results suggest that the Red Poll breed exceeds the Boran breed in additive direct genetic effects for size while the Boran breed exceeds the Red Poll breed in additive maternal genetic effects as expressed by calf weight weaned per year per cow calving. Breed group series II comparisons show the Boran and the 1/2 SG-1/2 B breed groups do not differ (P>0.05) in calf weight weaned per year per cow calving. The 1/2 SG-1/2 B breed group has maximum expected maternal heterosis; thus, it is indicated that the Boran breed exceeds the Santa Gertrudis breed in additive maternal genetic effects but the Santa Gertrudis breed exceeds the Boran breed in additive direct genetic effects for size.
Cruses De Ganado En Programas De Produccion De Carne En Kenia II. Comparacion De Boran Puro Y Boran Cruzado Con Red Poll Y Santa Gertrudis

Croisements Bovins Dans Les Programmes De Production De Viande Au Kenya. II. Comparaison Entre Le Boran Pur Et Le Boran Croise Avec Les Races Red Poll Et Santa Gertrudis

Angus (A), Hereford (H), Jersey (J), Simmental (S) and Brahman (B) bulls (202), were mated to A and H cows (855 cow-years) to produce F1 calves. Cows were randomly assigned within age and breed to two pasture programs. The two pasture programs were expected to differ in particular with respect to the energy level offered to the cows during winter (tall fescue hay versus corn silage). Effects of genotypes, pasture program and of their interactions on preweaning traits were studied. Differences (P< 0.05) between pasture programs were found only for frame and muscle scores. Marginal means for A dams were higher (P<0.05) than those for H cows for all traits, except birth weight. Calves sired by B bulls were heavier (P<0.01) at birth than those sired by S, A and H, and J bulls. For the other traits, S-sired calves tended to have the largest estimated means, followed by calves of B bulls, then by the average of calves sired by A and H bulls and finally by J-sired offspring. Significant (P< 0.05) breed of sire × breed of dam interactions involved only extreme sire breeds. All hypotheses involving pasture program × breed of sire interactions were not significant. Muscle score was the only trait affected (P< 0.05) by a pasture × breed of dam interaction. However, its effect was only magnitudinal. Birth weight was the only trait not affected at all by the pasture program × breed of sire × breed of dam interaction. In the other traits, significant interactions reflected changes in the magnitude of the response rather than in the ranking of genotypes across pasture programs.

Milk production parameters of purebred Jersey (J) cows and Fleckvieh?×?Jersey (F?×?J) cows in a pasture-based feeding system were compared using standard milk recording procedures. Milk, fat and protein production was adjusted to 305 days per lactation and corrected for age at calving. Effects of breed, parity, month and year were estimated for milk, fat and protein yield as well as fat and protein percentage, using the general linear model procedure. Fixed effects identified as affecting milk production parameters significantly were breed, parity and year. F?×?J cows produced significantly more milk than J cows (6141?±?102 and 5398?±?95 kg milk, respectively). Similarly, fat and protein yields were significantly higher in F?×?J (272?±?4 and 201?±?3 kg, respectively) than in Jersey cows (246?±?3 and 194?±?2 kg, respectively). Fat and protein percentages only differed slightly in absolute terms being 4.61?±?0.04 % fat in the Jersey compared to 4.47?±?0.04 % fat in the F?×?J. Protein levels for J and F?×?J cows were 3.62?±?0.03 and 3.51?±?0.03 %, respectively. Despite a lower fat percentage, F?×?J crossbred cows may be more productive than purebred Jersey cows which may be due to heterotic effects.

ObjectiveTo explore, in rabbits, the minimum infusion rates (MIR) required and recovery time from long duration (≤8 hours) continuous infusion of fospropofol disodium, a novel water-soluble prodrug of propofol, and compare it with propofol.Study designProspective, randomized, blinded experimental trial.AnimalsNinety-six adult laboratory rabbits, mean ± SD weight 2.20 ± 0.15 kg.MethodsStage 1. 16 rabbits were assigned to receive fospropofol disodium or propofol to measure MIR, using an up-and-down method with response to tail-clamping stimulus (TCS). Stage 2. Eighty rabbits were allocated to group F (fospropofol disodium) or group P (propofol), and further subdivided (n = 10 in each subgroup) according to infusion time (2, 4, 6 or 8 hours), to groups F2h, F4h, F6h, F8h and P2h, P4h, P6h, P8h. Fospropofol or propofol were infused, and tail clamping applied to maintain the same depth of anaesthesia until infusion was completed. Times to recover righting reflex (RR), to respond to TCS, and total recovery to different durations of continuous infusion of two anaesthetic drugs were noted. Respiratory and pulse rates and oxygen saturation were analyzed. The plasma concentrations of fospropofol disodium, the active metabolite propofol (propofolF) and propofol emulsion were measured with respect to loss and recovery of RR and TCS.ResultsMIR of fospropofol disodium was 2.0 mg kg?1 minute?1, and MIR of propofol was 0.9 mg kg?1 minute?1. Times in minutes to total recovery from anaesthesia in groups F and P were as follows, F2h 15 ± 3; F4h 26 ± 4; F6h 52 ± 6; F8h 84 ± 10; and P2h 10 ± 1; P4h 19 ± 7; P6h 36 ± 7; P8h 48 ± 5.Conclusions and clinical relevanceAfter continuous intravenous infusion in rabbits (≤8 hours), fospropofol disodium and propofol both show an extension of recovery time with increasing infusion time, fospropofol disodium showing a significantly greater prolongation compared to propofol emulsion when infusion time increases to 6 and 8 hours.

Gene action and heterosis in seven lifetime traits of Holstein‐Friesian × Sahiwal crosses was studied by fitting genetic additive—dominance and Dickerson, Sheridan models. The additive—dominance model is found adequate for all the traits except ‘average milk yield per day of total productive life’. The heterosis measured from mid‐parent varied from 15% in ‘total life’ to 108% in ‘milk yield from all available lactations’. Heterosis measured from superior parent ranged from 6% in ‘total milk yield of first three lactations’ to 75% in ‘milk yield from all available lactations’. The larger heterosis observed in some of the lifetime traits is attributed as the direct consequence of longer productive life in F1s compared to parental breeds. On the basis of the predicted performance of some of the nonavailable grades like 2/3 exotic, creation of synthetics is mooted.

Zhao, Z., Xue, F., Zhang, L., Zhang, K., Fei, C., Zheng, W., Wang, X., Wang, M., Zhao, Z., Meng, X. The pharmacokinetics of nitazoxanide active metabolite (tizoxanide) in goats and its protein binding ability in vitro. J. vet. Pharmacol. Therap. 33 , 147–153. The pharmacokinetics of tizoxanide (T), the active metabolite of nitazoxanide (NTZ), and its protein binding ability in goat plasma and in the solutions of albumin and α‐1‐acid‐glycoprotein were investigated. The plasma and protein binding samples were analyzed using a high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay with UV detection at 360 nm. The plasma concentration of T was detectable in goats up to 24 h. Plasma concentrations vs. time data of T after 200 mg/kg oral administration of NTZ in goats were adequately described by one‐compartment open model with first order absorption. As to free T, the values of t1/2Ka, t1/2Ke, Tmax, Cmax, AUC, V/F(c), and Cl(s) were 2.51 ± 0.41 h, 3.47 ± 0.32 h, 4.90 ± 0.13 h, 2.56 ± 0.25 μg/mL, 27.40 ± 1.54 (μg/mL) × h, 30.17 ± 2.17 L/kg, and 7.34 ± 1.21 L/(kg × h), respectively. After β‐glucuronidase hydrolysis to obtain total T, t1/2ke, Cmax, Tmax, AUC increased, while the V/F(c) and Cl(s) decreased. Study of the protein binding ability showed that T with 4 μg/mL concentration in goat plasma and in the albumin solution achieved a protein binding percentage of more than 95%, while in the solution of α‐1‐acid‐glycoprotein, the percentage was only about 49%. This result suggested that T might have much more potent binding ability with albumin than with α‐1‐acid‐glycoprotein, resulting from its acidic property.

Objective: Compare cardiac index (CI) and oxygen delivery index (DO2I) in conscious, critically ill dogs to control dogs; evaluate the association of CI and DO2I with outcome. Design: Prospective non‐randomized clinical study. Setting: Veterinary teaching hospital. Animals: Eighteen client‐owned dogs with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and 8 healthy control dogs. Measurements and Main Results: CI of dogs with SIRS was measured using lithium dilution at times 0, 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours. Data collected included physical exam, arterial blood gas (ABG) and hemoximetry. CI of control dogs was measured 3 times with 1 measurement of ABG. Mean CI ± SE in SIRS patients was 3.32 ± 0.95 L/min/m2; lower than controls at 4.18 ± 0.22 L/min/m2 (P<0.001). Mean DO2I ± SE in SIRS patients was 412.91 ± 156.67 mL O2/min/m2; lower than controls at 785.24 ± 45.99 mL O2/min/m2 (P<0.001). There was no difference in CI (P=0.49) or DO2I (P=0.51) for dogs that survived to discharge versus those that did not. There was no difference in mean CI (P=0.97) or DO2I (P=0.50) of survivors versus non‐survivors for 28‐day survival. Survivors had lower blood glucose (P=0.03) and serum lactate concentrations (P=0.04) than non‐survivors. Conclusions: CI and DO2I in conscious dogs with SIRS were lower than control dogs, which differs from theories that dogs with SIRS are in a high cardiac output state. CI and DO2I were not significantly different between survivors and non‐survivors. Similar to previous studies, lactate and glucose concentrations of survivors were lower than non‐survivors.

Liveweight (LW) of does and bucks of the native Creole goat breed and crosses of Creole does and Nubian bucks, aged 1.5–5 years, were recorded and body traits including: head length (HL), head width (HW), body length (BL), trunk length (TL), chest girth (CG), abdominal perimeter (AP), rump length (RL), and height at withers (HW) were measured to develop equations for predicting LW from the body measurements. Weight, sex, breed and kidding date of 354 kids were recorded at birth, and LW of the kids was measured monthly for one year to determine the effect of kidding season on growth rate. Bucks had higher (p < 0.05) body measurements than the does (HL 15.1 ± 0.1 vs 16.6 ± 0.2 cm; BL 97.6 ± 0.4 vs 104.6 ± 1.2 cm; CG 78.8 ± 0.4 vs 79.9 ± 1.0 cm; AP 82.4 ± 0.5 vs 87.2 ± 1.1 cm; HW 62.7 ± 0.4 vs 70.1 ± 0.8 cm). With the exception of TL, F2 does had higher (p < 0.05) body measurements and LW (28.8 ± 1.5 vs 27.7 ± 0.5 kg) than Creole does. The body traits of the F1 does were similar (p > 0.05) to those of Creole does with the exception of HL, BL and HR. The F2 kids were heavier (p < 0.05) at birth (3.31 ± 0.1 vs 2.60 ± 0.1 kg) and grew faster than the Creole kids. Male kids were heavier (p < 0.05) at birth (3.21 ± 0.10 vs 2.73 ± 0.13 kg), and grew faster than female kids. Season had a significant effect on birth weight. The results showed that LW of Creole goats and Creole × Nubian does could be estimated in the field using body traits. Birth weight and growth rate of kids could be improved by management practices that affect season of kidding.

The aim of the present study was to compare the lipid profile in oocytes of indicus and 1/2 indicus × taurus cows with high and low antral follicle count (AFC)/oocyte yields. After an OPU procedure (D0), antral follicles ≥3 mm were counted by ultrasonography (D4, 19, 34, 49, 64), and cows were assigned to groups with either high AFC (≥30 follicles; indicus, NH group; 1/2 indicus × taurus, AH group) or low AFC (≤15 antral follicles; indicus, NL group; 1/2 indicus × taurus, AL group). The lipid profiles of the oocytes were determined by MALDI‐MS. For GI, GII and GIII oocytes, the indicus samples tend to cluster separately from the 1/2 indicus × taurus samples. The lipid species [PC (P‐38:5) + H]+ and/or [PC (P‐36:2) + Na]+, [PC (38:2) + H]+, [PC (38:5) + Na]+ and [TAG (60:8) + NH4]+ were more abundant in indicus (NH and NL groups) than 1/2 indicus × taurus. The higher lipid content in the indicus oocytes likely reflects differences in the rate of lipid metabolism and may contribute to oocyte competence and embryo development.

ObjectiveClinical experience suggests that dachshunds are prone to bradycardia during general anaesthesia (GA). The study investigated mean heart rates in anaesthetized dachshunds and other breeds of dog.Study DesignRetrospective clinical study.AnimalsSixty one dachshunds and 62 dogs of other breeds met inclusion criteria.MethodsClinical records of small breed dogs undergoing GA for spinal Magnetic Resonance Imaging between September 2008 and March 2010 were identified and examined. Data collected included drugs administered, baseline heart (HR) and respiratory (fR) rates and rectal temperature. The following information was noted from anaesthetic records: HR, fR, mean non-invasive arterial pressure and end-tidal carbon dioxide (Pe′CO2) and anaesthetic agent (Fe′agent) during the first 60 minutes of anaesthesia; rectal temperature at a time closest to the cessation of anaesthesia, ventilatory mode (spontaneous/mechanical) and fluid infusion rate. Univariate analysis with Student t-test and Fisher's test identified parameters significant in predicting a lowered HR. A multivariate analysis investigated their effect on the mean HR during GA.ResultsNo differences were found between groups regarding: age, baseline HR, baseline temperature, incidence of hypotension, Fe′agent, mean Pe′CO2 and fluid infusion rate. Body mass was smaller for dachshunds (6.7 ± 1.5 kg) compared to other breeds (7.8 ± 1.8 kg) (p = 0.0005). The lowest HR recorded was lower in dachshunds (64 ± 19 beats minute?1) compared to other breeds (72 ± 21 beats minute?1) (p = 0.03). Mean HR was lower in dachshunds (75 ± 21 beats minute?1) compared to other breeds (84 ± 21 beats minute?1) (p = 0.02). Post-procedural temperature (°C) was lower in dachshunds (35.5 ± 1.1) compared to other breeds (36.1 ± 1.2) (p = 0.007) and anticholinergics were also administered more frequently (p = 0.026). Multivariate analysis identified that breed and mean Pe′CO2 affected mean HR during anaesthesia.ConclusionThis study supported our hypothesis that dachshunds have a lower mean HR under GA than other small breed dogs.

Abstract

Ammonia concentrations in water can affect the severity of Flavobacterium columnare infections in fish. Two trials lasting 7 d each were conducted to determine the effect of a single immersion flush treatment of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN; 15 mg/L) on the survival of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus infected with F. columnare; the chemical was added while the water flowed continuously through the tanks. Both trials consisted of four treatments: (1) no ammonia exposure and no bacterial challenge (control), (2) ammonia exposure only, (3) bacterial challenge only, and (4) both ammonia exposure and bacterial challenge. Two hours after exposure to ammonia, the highest un-ionized ammonia level was 0.43 mg/L. The percent un-ionized ammonia is based on TAN, temperature, and pH. Caudal fins from three fish in each treatment were sampled at 24 h posttreatment to be analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). No significant difference in survival (mean ± SE) was noted between the channel catfish in treatment 1 (95.2 ± 1.2%) and those in treatment 2 (95.6 ± 1.0%); however, survival in both treatments 1 and 2 differed significantly from that in treatments 3 (8.5 ± 4.5%) and 4 (41.8 ± 12.7%). Treatment 4 catfish had significantly higher survival than treatment 3 catfish. Quantitative PCR data showed that treatment 4 fish had significantly less F. columnare (7.6 × 105) than did treatment 3 fish (1.2 × 107), and treatment 2 fish (8.5 × 103) had significantly less bacteria than did treatment 1 fish (6.9 × 104), indicating that ammonia limited the F. columnare infection. The highest mean concentration of the bacteria (3.9 × 107) was found on moribund fish. The ammonia concentrations tested did not negatively influence fish survival but interfered with the infection process. An in vitro assay was also conducted to evaluate the direct effects of ammonia on F. columnare.

Background: Hematological and biochemical values in cats naturally infected by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are not completely documented. Objective: Report differences in laboratory values between FIV‐ or FeLV‐infected and noninfected and between FIV‐ and FeLV‐infected cats. Animals: Three thousand seven hundred and eighty client‐owned cats tested for FIV and FeLV. Methods: Retrospective study. Evaluation of clinicopathologic changes in cats with defined FIV and FeLV status and for which laboratory data were available. Results: FIV‐infected cats were more likely to be neutropenic (odds ratio [OR]=3.6, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 2.1–6.2, P < .0001) and had lower serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase than control cats; serum total protein (8.1 ± 1.1 versus 7.6 ± 1.3 g/dL, P < .001) and γ‐globulin concentrations (2.2 ± 1.1 versus 1.7 ± 1.3 g/dL, P < .001) were higher than in uninfected cats. Compared with controls, FeLV‐infected cats had a higher risk of anemia (OR = 3.8, 95% CI 2.4–6.0, P < .0001), thrombocytopenia (OR = 5.0, 95% CI 3.0–8.4, P < .0001), neutropenia (OR = 3.6, 95% CI 2.1–6.1, P < .0001), lymphocytosis (OR = 2.8, 95% CI 1.6–4.8, P= .0002), and lower erythrocyte counts (6.13 ± 2.95 × 103 versus 8.72 ± 2.18 × 103/μL, P < .001), thrombocyte counts (253.591 ± 171.841 × 103 versus 333.506 ± 156.033 × 103/μL, P < .001), hematocrit (28.72 ± 12.86 versus 37.67 ± 8.90%, P < .001), hemoglobin and creatinine concentration. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Hematologic abnormalities are common in FeLV‐infected but not in FIV‐infected cats. Clinicopathologic abnormalities are less frequent in FIV‐infected cats and might reflect an unspecific immunologic response.

To evaluate the effect of foal age on the pharmacokinetics of cefadroxil, five foals were administered cefadroxil in a single intravenous dose (5 mg/kg) and a single oral dose (10 or 20 mg/kg) at ages of 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 5 months. Pharmacokinetic parameters of terminal elimination rate constant (βpo), oral mean residence time (MRTpo), mean absorption time (MAT), rate constant for oral absorption (Ka), bioavailability F, peak serum concentrations(Cmax) and time of peak concentration (tmax), were evaluated in a repeated measures analysis over dose. Across animal ages, parameters for the intravenous dose did not change significantly over animal age (P 0.05). Mean values ± SEM were: βIV = 0.633 ± 0.038 h?1; Cl = 0.316 ± 0.010 L/kg/h; Vc = 0.196 ± 0.008 L/kg; Varea = 0.526 ± 0.024 L/kg; VSS =0.374 ± 0.014 L/kg; MRTiv = 1.22 ± 0.07 h; Kel = 1.67 ± 0.08 h?1. Following oral administration, drug absorption became faster with age (P < 0.05), as reflected by MRTpo, MAT, Ka and tmax. However, oral bioavailability (±SE) declined significantly (P < 0.05) from 99.6 ± 3.69% at 0.5 months to 14.5 ± 1.40% at 5 months of age. To evaluate a dose effect on the pharmacokinetic parameters, a series of oral doses (5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) were administered to these foals at 1 month of age. βpo (0.548 ± 0.023 h?1) and F (68.26 ± 2.43%) were not affected significantly by the size of the dose. Cmax was approximately doubled with each two-fold increase in dose: 3.15 ± 0.15, 5.84 ± 0.48, 12.17 ± 0.93 and 19.71 ± 2.19 μg/mL. Dose-dependent kinetics were observed in MRTpo, MAT, Ka and tmax.
