Leptospira infection was diagnosed as the cause of 4 late-term equine abortions/stillbirths and 1 neonatal death in Louisiana. The most consistent gross and microscopic lesions were icterus and interstitial nephritis, respectively. Diagnoses were based on visualization of compatible spirochetes in Warthin-Starry-stained sections of kidney, liver, and placenta. Confirmation by immunofluorescence was made in 2 cases.  相似文献

Sera from 116 and 89 Swedish pigs and horses respectively were examined for the presence of antibodies to L. bratislava. Antibodies were found in 18.1 and 49.4% respectively of pigs and horses examined. Presence of serum antibodies was not associated with clinical signs of infection.  相似文献

C3 was detected bound in vivo to the opaque cornea of horses inoculated with killed Leptospira interrogans. Employing epithelial corneal cells isolated from a monolayer in tissue culture, we proved that C3 is fixed in vitro to the intact cell surface after incubation with a fresh equine anti-Leptospira serum. These findings, in addition to the infiltration of cornea with neutrophils and lymphocytes, may explain the mechanisms of tissue damage in recurrent uveitis of horses with leptospirosis.  相似文献

A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the leptospiral seroprevalence in clinically healthy horses in Switzerland. A representative sample of 615 horse sera was examined by microscopic agglutination test for the presence of antibodies against 15 Leptospira?spp. serovars. In total, 58.5?% (n?=?360) of the horses were positive for one or more of the antigens analysed, with 20.3?% of them showing titres >=?400. The most prevalent serovar was Pyrogenes (22.6?%), followed by serovars Canicola (22.1?%) and Australis (19.2?%). SUMMARY Serum samples from 272 horses, some III, were tested by the microscopic agglutination test for the presence of antibody to 12 serovars of Leptospira interrogans. Serums from 41.5% of horses reacted to one or more of the serovars tested; the most common reactions were to L. interrogans serovar ballum (15.1%), L. interrogans serovar autumnalis (11.8%), L. interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae (9.9%), L. interrogans serovar pomona (8.1%) and L. interrogans serovar hardjo (7.7%).  相似文献

In October 1989, we received a blood sample from a horse which had recently aborted. The sample showed a very high titre against Leptospira interrogans serovar copenhageni and lower titres against several other tested serovars. Fifty sera collected from 12 different species of free-living game animals in game parks in the Northern Natal were tested against 8 Leptospira interrogans antigens using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Six out of 50 animals had titres, all less than 100. Three of these animals had titres to serovar mini, 1 animal to tarrasovi, and 3 animals had multi-serovar reactions, 1 to mini and hardjo, and 1 to tarrasovi, copenhageni and pomona.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine normal baseline levels of vitamin A and vitamin E in clinically normal horses under typical field conditions in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Heparinized blood samples were collected from approximately 400 clinically healthy horses selected from 24 locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan during a two-year period. For each horse, historical information including feed type, vitamin supplementation, time of year, sex, and age were recorded. From each blood sample, the plasma vitamin A (all-transretinol) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) levels were measured using high pressure liquid chromatography. Normal baseline plasma vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations recorded during the study were 0.70 mumol/L and 7.65 mumol/L, respectively. The plasma vitamin concentrations were lower in the younger horses. The plasma vitamin levels were higher from May to August, as compared to other times of the year. Horses grazing fresh pasture exclusively during the summer months had plasma vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations that were 27% and 63% greater than horses fed harvested or stored feeds during the same time period. Sex-related differences were not evident in the study. A number of factors may influence the baseline plasma vitamin A and vitamin E levels in horses. Consequently, it is unadvisable to use a single evaluation to assess vitamin status. Multiple sampling from individual horses or sampling from many horses within a herd may reduce the variability and improve the ability to monitor vitamin status from plasma submissions.  相似文献

Leptospirosis, a disease more common in the tropics, can cause a life-threatening multisystemic syndrome in humans and animals. Immunity, whether natural or vaccine-induced, is serogroup-specific with the infecting serovars varying according to geographical locality. In South Africa, in spite of the fact that the bacterin vaccine for some Leptospira serovars is often used, there is no recent information on the incidence of canine leptospirosis as well as the infecting serovar/s. The aim of this study, which was undertaken on sera collected in 2008 and 2009 from both strays and owned dogs predominantly in the coastal regions of South Africa, was to determine the presence of leptospiral antibodies to 15 serovars known to infect dogs. Of the 530 samples tested, 25 tested positive to 7 different serovars with the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Nine of the 25 samples tested positive to more than one serovar. The 2 serovars most frequently represented were Canicola, which reacted to 17 sera, and Pyrogenes, which reacted to 10 sera. Currently the only vaccines available in South Africa in different combinations contain serovars Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Pomona and Grippotyphosa. The results showed that the use of vaccines containing serovar Canicola is still justifiable in certain regions of the country. However, the presence of antibodies to serovar Pyrogenes in several dogs, pending a broader investigation, indicates that this serovar should also be included in the range of Leptospira vaccines for use in South Africa.  相似文献

An antigenic relationship between Leptospira interrogans and equine cornea was previously described by us. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed in the present work to investigate the existence of anti-leptospira and anti-cornea antibodies in tears, aqueous humor and serum from horses inoculated i.m. with those antigens. Ten days after a booster by the same route, antibodies that bind to microtiter plates, coated with an homogenate of either equine cornea or leptospira, were detected in those fluids and in the sera. At the same time, the corneas of the horses began to develop a diffuse opacity. This finding of anti-leptospira antibodies in equine tears and aqueous humor shows the pathway along which they arrive at the cornea and bind to it.  相似文献

After the observation of 2 horses with uveitis on a horse farm in the Minnesota River valley, 100 horses from this geographic area were given ophthalmologic examinations and were evaluated serologically for leptospirosis. A statistically significant (P less than 0.001) association was observed between the finding of antibodies against Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona and uveitis.  相似文献
