To assess the effects of 2 high intensity sodium saccharine-based sweeteners on individual feed intake characteristics and performance of group-housed weaned pigs, one hundred ninety-eight 26-d-old weanling pigs were given ad libitum access to 3 dietary treatments containing: no additional sweetener (control), 150 mg of sweetener (Sucram C-150)/kg, or 150 mg of sweetener (Sucram 3D)/kg. At weaning, piglets were allocated to 18 pens (11 pigs/pen) based on BW, sex, and ancestry, and pens were randomly assigned to 3 treatments with 6 pens per treatment. The pens were equipped with computerized feeding stations. During the first 12 d, pigs were offered pelleted prestarter diets that were replaced at once by pelleted starter diets for the last 7 d of the 19-d experimental period. The individual feed intake characteristics consisting of latency time (interval between weaning and first feed intake), initial feed intake (intake during the first 24 h following the first feed intake), the number of total visits per day, and the number of visits in which feed was consumed, together with the time and the feed intake per visit, were determined for all piglets. Performance traits and fecal consistency were determined per pen for d 0 to 5, d 5 to 12, and d 12 to 19, as well as for the total period (d 0 to 19). The initiation of feed intake was not affected by the addition of high intensity sweeteners to the diet. From 12 d postweaning, dietary sweeteners caused the piglets to focus more on feed intake and less on exploratory behavior, as shown by the increased percentage of visits with feed intake in pigs fed the Sucram 3D diet compared with those fed the control diet (P = 0.002). The overall daily feed intake increased with time but was not affected by the addition of sweeteners. Nevertheless, dietary sweeteners prevented the depression of feed intake on d 8 and 10 postweaning (d 8, P = 0.013; d 10, P = 0.014), which seemed to coincide with an improved fecal consistency score (d 5 to 12, P = 0.11; d 12 to 19, P < 0.001). However, the changes in feed intake characteristics and fecal consistency only resulted in numerical effects on postweaning pig performance (ADFI, P = 0.126; ADG, P = 0.140). The results of the present study indicate that weanling pigs need a certain period of time before clear effects of dietary sweeteners on individual feed intake characteristics and pig performance can be observed.  相似文献

Twelve blood serum components were determined on 78 barrows and 66 gilts, serially slaughtered at six age groups, starting at 69 d, at 2-wk intervals. One-half of the animals were fed ad libitum and one-half were fed "time restricted". Partial correlations between production and carcass traits and serum components were calculated from the residuals of the least-squares analysis. Calcium, serum protein and albumin were highly (P less than .01) correlated with several production and carcass traits. Creatinine was positively correlated (P less than .05) with backfat, loin fat, and percent dissected muscle and bone. Alkaline phosphatase showed a positive relationship with average daily gain (P less than .05) and percent dissected bone (P less than .01). A stepwise regression analysis was used to examine simultaneously the relative predictive value of the blood serum components. The nitrogenous compounds, which included albumin, total protein, urea and creatinine, were the most important predictors of performance (avg daily gain, feed conversion) and carcass composition. However, most of the serum components were not related to the performance and carcass composition traits.  相似文献

To assess the effects of creep feed consumption on individual feed intake characteristics and performance of group-housed weaned pigs, 16 litters (149 piglets) were fed a commercial creep feed (3,040 kcal NE/kg, 15.2 g lysine/kg) supplemented with 1% chromic oxide. Another five litters (48 piglets) were not given access to creep feed (no-feed). Piglets were weaned at 28 d after birth. On d 18, 22, and 27 of age, fecal samples from all the piglets were taken using fecal loops. A green color of the feces indicated that the piglet had eaten creep feed. Piglets that had green-colored feces three times were considered as eaters. Piglets that never showed green-colored feces were considered as non-eaters. At weaning 22 piglets of each type (no-feed, non-eaters, and eaters) were selected based on BW, litter origin, and sex. These 66 pigs were assigned to six pens equipped with computerized feeding stations. Eaters, non-eaters, and no-feed pigs were equally divided over all six pens. After weaning a prestarter (d 0 to 13) and a starter diet (d 14 to 34) were offered for ad libitum consumption. The individual feed intake characteristics of latency time (interval between weaning and first feed intake) and initial feed intake (intake during the first 24 h following first feed intake) and performance traits were determined for all piglets. The pigs that were designated as eaters needed less time between weaning and first feed intake than the pigs that were designated as non-eaters and no-feed pigs (P = 0.04 and P = 0.06, respectively). Initial feed intake was not affected (P > 0.1) by feed intake prior to weaning. However, during d 0 to 8 the eaters had more visits per day during which feed was consumed than both the non-eaters and no-feed pigs. Averaged over the first 8 d after weaning, the ADFI and ADG of the eaters were higher than that of the non-eaters and no-feed pigs (P < 0.05). Averaged over the total 34-d period the effect of creep feed intake on postweaning ADFI was much less pronounced (P = 0.20), whereas ADG of the eaters was the highest (P < 0.05). Creep feed intake during the sucking period stimulates early postweaning feed intake as well as postweaning performance.  相似文献

Two studies were carried out with pigs to determine the relationship between back test results and production parameters and between back test results and other factors. In the first study, 823 piglets were tested with the back test at 10 and 17 days of age. Production parameters such as average daily weight gain and lean meat percentage were determined. In the second study, the back test was performed on 566 piglets at 3, 10, and 17 days of age. The number of escape attempts in the back test (back test score) of the mother was known for 364 piglets. Parameters concerning the health of the sow and piglets were recorded, as well as the sow's reaction to piglet removal for testing. The relationships between production parameters and back test scores of the animals were calculated, as well as the influence of birth weight, sex (all males were castrated), parents, and health parameters on back test scores. Back test scores were fairly consistent over successive tests for each piglet. Males had higher back test scores than females, and piglets from sows with low back test scores also had low scores. Finally, a higher back test score was correlated with a higher lean meat percentage and a better carcass grading at slaughter; no relation with daily weight gain was found. It is concluded that there are individual differences in the way pigs cope with a stressful situation, as measured with the back test, and that this coping behaviour is consistent. A positive correlation exists between back test scores at a young age and lean meat percentage at slaughter. The response to stress, and hence back test scores, is assumed to be inheritable.  相似文献

Direct selection for litter size or weight at weaning in pigs is often hindered by external interventions such as cross‐fostering. The objective of this study was to infer the causal structure among phenotypes of reproductive traits in pigs to enable subsequent direct selection for these traits. Examined traits included: number born alive (NBA), litter size on day 21 (LS21), and litter weight on day 21 (LW21). The study included 6,240 litters from 1,673 Landrace dams and 5,393 litters from 1,484 Large White dams. The inductive causation (IC) algorithm was used to infer the causal structure, which was then fitted to a structural equation model (SEM) to estimate causal coefficients and genetic parameters. Based on the IC algorithm and temporal and biological information, the causal structure among traits was identified as: NBA → LS21 → LW21 and NBA → LW21. Owing to the causal effect of NBA on LS21 and LW21, the genetic, permanent environmental, and residual variances of LS21 and LW21were much lower in the SEM than in the multiple‐trait model for both breeds. Given the strong effect of NBA on LS21 and LW21, the SEM and causal information might assist with selective breeding for LS21 and LW21 when cross‐fostering occurs.  相似文献

Haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains of Pasteurella multocida were identified by a disease-specific ELISA. Some strains, however, were of the same serotype as those which cause haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) but were negative when tested in the disease specific ELISA. The suspect false negative isolates were passaged in mice and retested in the HS ELISA with the same result. Immunoelectron microscopy was used to examine further these suspect HS-causing strains. Monoclonal antibodies and protein A-gold showed that the suspect negative organisms were a mixture of phenotypes with less than 10 per cent, and usually less than 2 per cent, of the population expressing HS-associated epitopes. The degree of staining on the organisms expressing the HS-epitopes was of the same intensity as the positive control organism. Expression of the HS-associated epitopes is presumably too low to allow detection in the current HS ELISA.  相似文献

Data obtained during 4 generations of divergent selection for placental efficiency were used to determine factors influencing survival at farrowing and weaning in litters produced by first-parity females. Data were collected from 193 litters and included records on 2,053 individuals. Farrowing survival (FS) and weaning survival (WS) were considered traits of the piglet and were scored 1 if the individual was alive at a time point or 0 if dead. Estimates of (co)variance components for direct and maternal additive genetic effects for FS and WS were obtained using an animal model and computed with the MTDFREML program. Estimates of direct heritability were 0.16 for FS and 0.18 for WS. Estimates of maternal heritability were 0.14 for FS and 0.10 for WS. Genetic correlation estimates between direct and maternal effects were high and negative for both traits. The direct genetic correlation between FS and WS was 0.92. Variables associated with FS and WS were determined using logistic regression procedures. Birth weight (BRW), placental weight, their interaction, and total born can be used as predictors of survival at farrowing in the absence of estimates of genetic merit for survival. The same model, excluding total number born, was the best model for predicting WS. In the presence of BRW information, placental efficiency did not improve the prediction of survival. While it was clearly disadvantageous for a piglet to be below the litter mean in BRW, being above the mean did not provide a substantial advantage in survival. Results from this analysis suggest that it is possible to select for increased survival at farrowing and at weaning. Information on a piglet's BRW, placental weight, litter average BRW, and deviation from litter average BRW can be used to optimize those values at levels resulting in high survival probability.  相似文献

Progeny (n = 589) of randomly mated Duroc pigs were used to determine the genetic and phenotypic relationships between individual s.c. backfat layers and i.m. fat percent (IMF) of the longissimus. Five days before slaughter, cross-sectional ultrasound images were collected at the 10th rib by a National Swine Improvement Federation-certified ultrasound technician using an ultrasound machine (Aloka 500 SSD) fitted with a 12-cm linear array transducer. Off-midline backfat (SBF) and loin muscle area (SLMA) were measured. Individual s.c. backfat layers were measured at the same location: outer (OBF), middle (MBF), and inner (IBF). Off-midline backfat (CBF) and loin muscle area (CLMA) were measured on the carcass 24 h postmortem. A slice from the 10th rib of the loin muscle was obtained for determination of IMF. Heritability estimates and genetic correlations were calculated fitting all possible two-trait animal models in MATVEC (Wang et al., 2003). The heritabilities for OBF, MBF, IBF, CBF, SBF, and IMF were 0.63, 0.45, 0.53, 0.48, 0.44, and 0.69, respectively. The genetic correlations of OBF, MBF, and IBF with IMF were 0.36, 0.16, and 0.28, respectively, and the genetic correlations of CBF and SBF with IMF were 0.25 and 0.27, respectively. Genetic correlations between OBF and MBF, OBF and IBF, and MBF and IBF were 0.43, 0.45, and 0.67, respectively. Results demonstrate that individual backfat layers are highly heritable, of similar magnitude to total backfat, and have similar genetic correlations with IMF. Individual backfat layers could become candidate traits for implementation into a multiple-trait genetic evaluation to improve IMF, while minimizing the detrimental effect on total backfat depth.  相似文献

Carcass quality characteristics are essential in affecting grading and revenue that pig producers realize. No information is available on the grading of carcasses in indigenous Mukota pigs of Zimbabwe. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of genotype (Mukota and Large White × Mukota) and sex on post-weaning growth performance and carcass traits of pigs fed maize cob-based diets. All pigs were weighed at 2-week intervals to estimate average daily gain, dressing percentage (DP), and carcass lengths. Backfat thickness was also measured. Males had higher body weight gains than females (P < 0.05). Growth rates for Mukota (0.31 ± 0.010) and crossbred (0.41 ± 0.030) pigs were lower in the cool season than the other seasons (P < 0.05). Body weights were consistently higher in the crossbred than in the Mukota pigs (P < 0.05). Mukota pigs showed a peak growth between 12 and 14 weeks post-weaning (P < 0.05). The DPs were 0.70 and 0.73 for the Mukota and crossbred pigs, respectively (P < 0.05). Crossbred pigs had longer (P < 0.05) carcasses than Mukota (655.5 ± 1.68 versus 507.2 ± 0.92 mm). Although there were no differences in the backfat thickness between males and females of the crossbred pigs, Mukota males had thicker backfat than the females (P < 0.05). Crossbreeding is, therefore, significant in improving carcass grades of Mukota pigs.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality of growing-finishing pigs fed diets based on short-season corn hybrids. Twenty-four individually housed, Cotswold, growing pigs with an initial BW of 41.4 (SD = 1.4) kg were blocked by BW and sex and randomly allotted from within block to 1 of 3 diets to give 8 replicate pigs per diet. Experimental diets consisted of a control based on barley and 2 diets based on corn as the main energy sources. A 3-phase feeding program for 20 to 50 kg (phase I), 50 to 80 kg (phase II), and 80 to 110 kg (phase III) of BW was used. Diets for each phase contained approximately 3.5 Mcal/kg of DE, with total lysine of 0.95, 0.75, and 0.64% in phase I, II, and III diets, respectively. Average daily gain, ADFI, and G:F were monitored weekly during each phase. Pigs were slaughtered after reaching a minimum BW of 100 kg to determine carcass characteristics. There were no effects of diet on ADG, ADFI, and G:F (0.45 +/- 0.02, 0.34 +/- 0.02, and 0.31 +/- 0.02 for phase I, II, and III, respectively). Carcass length, dressing percent, LM area, loin depth, backfat thickness, belly firmness, and L*, b*, and a* fat color were not different across dietary treatments. Pigs fed one corn variety had no differences in fatty acid profile with barley-fed pigs, whereas those fed the other variety of corn had a greater (P < 0.05) concentration of PUFA in their backfat. The results indicate that growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality of pigs fed diets based on short-season corn hybrids and those fed the barley-based diet were not different.  相似文献

Data on the reproductive, growth and carcass performance of Tai Hu and Da Min pigs are presented. Sow litters of the Chinese breeds average 14 pigs farrowed alive and 12 pigs weaned at 60 days of age. The Fen Jin, Mei Shan and Jia Xin breeds average almost 17 nipples. Body weights at birth, 60, 120, 180 and 240 days, average 0.8, 12.4, 30, 47 and 68 kg, respectively. Crossing Chinese breeds with breeds such as Landrace and Large White results in increased growth rate and a higher percentage of lean meat.  相似文献

Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran collected from January 1990 to December 2007 and comprising 207,106 first calving events of Holsteins from 2,506 herds were analysed using univariate and bivariate linear sire models to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations between age at first calving (AFC) and productive performance. Average AFC was 26.48 months in this study. The peak in the frequency distribution of AFC clearly exists coinciding with cows calving for the first time at approximately 25 months of age. Heritability estimate for AFC was 0.34 which was greater than the corresponding values for productive traits. The heritability estimates were low to medium for productive traits which ranged from 0.17 to 0.26 for cows in their first calvings. Except for fat and protein percentages of milk, phenotypic and genetic correlations between AFC and productive performance traits were low to moderately negative. Range of genetic correlations between productive traits was −0.53 to 0.99. Reduction of age at first calving appeared to have a negative effect on first lactation protein and fat percentages; however, it had positive effects on milk yield, fat yield, protein yield and their mature equivalents. It seems that reducing age at first calving to 24–25 months is probably more profitable than reducing age at first calving to an earlier time in Iranian conditions.  相似文献

1. Over twelve 28-d laying periods (almost one year), 272 laying hens of the Lohmann Silver strain, individually tagged with transponders, were monitored on their ranging behaviour and laying performance in an aviary system with an adjacent winter garden. 2. From laying periods 1 to 12, the daily frequency of passages between the barn and the winter garden of individual hens, showed an antagonistic trend compared to the average duration of single visits. While the frequency of passages decreased until the end of the recording period to 8 passages per hen and day, the average duration of single visits increased to a maximum of 32 min per hen. 3. The heritability estimates for the traits, length of stay in the winter garden and frequency of passages were higher for the last 5 laying periods than at the beginning of the recording period. For the last 5 laying periods, the estimates for the duration of stay in the winter garden varied between h(2) = 0.21 and 0.32 and for the frequency of passages, between h(2) = 0.30 and 0.49. 4. Most of the estimated heritabilities for the rate of lay were on an expected medium level (h(2) = 0.09 to 0.45). Deviant h(2)-values to a few laying periods were based on low additive genetic variances or high environmental variance. 5. Genetic correlations between both free range traits and the laying performance were negative (r(g length of stay) = -0.34 and r(g passage frequency) = -0.08). 6. Generally, there seems to be a possibility to influence the ranging behaviour through selection. Further investigations with different genotypes and varying dates of exposure to the laying environment, should be carried out to clarify possible influences on other traits and the negative correlation with laying performance.  相似文献

Tryptophan (TRP) content in the protein of the weaning diet was varied from deficient (.70 g/16 g N) to adequate (1.15 g/16 g N) and excess (1.60 g/16 g N) in diets fed to 108 pigs from d 5 to d 26 after weaning (W) and in 72 pigs from d 26 after weaning to slaughter (100 kg live weight) to assess immediate and long-term effects of TRP on performance. Daily weight gain and feed efficiency were improved when dietary TRP was increased from deficient to adequate (+60 and +40%, respectively). Concurrently, daily feed intake was elevated moderately (+15%). No further improvement was observed with excess TRP. In the low TRP group, gain/feed was significantly poorer up to 25 kg live weight, but this effect did not continue later. Although no compensatory growth could be shown in the group fed the deficient diet, growth retardation was very small (1.5%; P greater than .10) at slaughter. Early changes in TRP supply did not affect either carcass or meat quality. Behavioral reactivity, as determined on day W + 5 in an "open-field" test, did not affect early performance, but growth rate during the growing-finishing stage (3.2%) or the whole period (2.5%) was greater by nonemotional than by emotional pigs. Plasma amino acid contents in blood samples, withdrawn on day W + 15 (fed state) and W + 17 (fasted state), were consistent with the effect of TRP on growth rates. However, in the fasted state, a diet x reactivity interaction suggested that TRP removal from the plasma was less rapid in nonemotional than in emotional pigs. Furthermore, increased plasma concentrations of essential amino acids and urea in the latter group suggested that protein and amino acid catabolism was more rapid in emotional than in nonemotional pigs. These data are discussed relative to the effect of the behavioral type of pig on its TRP requirement.  相似文献

In this study the effects of barren vs enriched housing conditions of pigs on their behavior during the lairage period (2-h holding period before slaughter), carcass characteristics, postmortem muscle metabolism, and meat quality were studied. The barren housing system was defined by common intensive housing conditions (i.e., with slatted floors and recommended space allowances), whereas the enriched environment incorporated extra space and straw for manipulation. Salivary cortisol concentrations were measured before transport and at the end of the lairage period. During the lairage period the percentage of time spent walking and fighting by the pigs was registered. Carcass characteristics such as weight, meat percentage, and backfat thickness were determined. At 5 min, 45 min, 4 h, and 24 h postmortem, pH, temperature, and lactate concentrations were determined in the longissimus lumborum (LL) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles. Capillarization of the muscle, mean muscle fiber area, and color and drip loss after 2 and 5 d of storage were determined for both muscle types. Pigs from the barren environment had a significantly higher increase in cortisol from farm to slaughter, but no differences in behavior were observed during the lairage period. Carcass characteristics did not differ between pigs from barren and those from enriched housing conditions. Postmortem lactate formation was significantly lower in LL muscles of enriched pigs at 4 and 24 h postmortem. Capillary density and mean muscle fiber area did not differ between the groups of pigs. The percentage of drip loss at 2 and 5 d after storage of LL muscle samples from enriched-housed pigs was significantly lower than that of the barren-housed pigs. Similar tendencies were found for the BF muscle from pigs kept in an enriched environment, but these were not statistically significant. The housing system did not affect meat color. It is concluded that on-farm improvement of animal welfare by environmental enrichment can also lead to beneficial economic effects after slaughter by improving the water-holding capacity of pork.  相似文献

A genetically modified corn hybrid homozygous for the lpa1 allele, containing low phytate (LP), and its nearly isogenic equivalent hybrid (normal) were compared in two experiments with growing-finishing swine. In Exp. 1, 210 barrows (27 kg) were allotted to one of six dietary treatments with two corn hybrids (LP and normal) and three P feeding regimens. There were five replicate pens (seven pigs/pen) per treatment. Treatments consisted of diets that were supplemented with P throughout the growing-finishing period (.2% P and .15% supplemental P during growing and finishing phases, respectively) or only during the growing phase (.2% supplemental P) or that were not supplemented with P throughout the growing-finishing period. Performance at the end of the growing phase was based on a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with two corn hybrids and two levels of added P (0 and .2%). This resulted in 10 replicates for the treatments supplemented with .2% P. The finishing phase (73 to 112 kg) was a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with the two types of corn and three regimens of added P during the finishing period. Breaking load (BL) and ash of the fourth metacarpal were evaluated from one pig/pen at the end of the growing phase and from all pigs after slaughter. Pigs fed the LP corn diet without added P had greater body weight gain, feed efficiency, BL, and ash content of the fourth metacarpal than pigs fed the normal corn diet without added P. Performance was similar between pigs fed the LP diet without added P and pigs fed LP and normal corn with added P. In Exp. 2, 1,092 gilts (34 kg body weight) were allotted by weight in a commercial facility to one of three treatments: 1) normal corn/soybean meal diet containing .29% and .22% available P during the growing and finishing phases, respectively; 2) LP corn/soybean meal diet with the same available P level as Treatment 1; and 3) same as Treatment 2 for 8 wk, then no inorganic P supplementation during the finishing phase. All pigs were slaughtered at approximately 122 kg. There were no significant differences in growing-finishing performance or BL among treatments. However, pigs fed diets containing LP corn possessed carcasses with less backfat and a higher percentage of lean (P < .01). These results confirm that the P in LP corn is available to the pig and suggest that pigs fed diets containing this genetically modified corn will have more desirable carcasses.  相似文献

Leptin is the hormone product of the obese gene that is synthesized and predominantly expressed by adipocytes. This study estimated the genetic variation in serum leptin concentration and evaluated the genetic and phenotypic relationships of serum leptin concentration with performance, efficiency of gain, and carcass merit. There were 464 steers with records for serum leptin concentration, performance, and efficiency of gain and 381 steers with records for carcass traits. The analyses included a total of 813 steers, including those without phenotypic records. Phenotypic and genetic parameter estimates were obtained using SAS and ASREML, respectively. Serum leptin concentration was moderately heritable (h2 = 0.34 +/- 0.13) and averaged 13.91 (SD = 5.74) ng/mL. Sire breed differences in serum leptin concentration correlated well with breed differences in body composition. Specifically, the serum leptin concentration was 20% greater in Angus-sired steers compared with Charolais-sired steers (P < 0.001). Consequently, ultrasound backfat (27%), carcass 12th-rib fat (31%), ultrasound marbling (14%), and carcass marbling (15%) were less in Charolais- than Angus-sired steers (P < 0.001). Conversely, carcass LM area (P = 0.05) and carcass lean meat yield (P < 0.001) were greater in Charolais- compared with Angus-sired steers. Steers with greater serum leptin concentration also had greater DMI (P < 0.001), greater residual feed intake (P = 0.04), and partial efficiency of growth (P = 0.01), but did not differ in feed conversion ratio (P > 0.10). Serum leptin concentration was correlated phenotypically with ultrasound backfat (r = 0.41; P < 0.001), carcass 12th-rib fat (r = 0.42; P < 0.001), ultrasound marbling (r = 0.25; P < 0.01), carcass marbling (r = 0.28; P < 0.01), ultrasound LM area (r = -0.19; P < 0.01), carcass LM area (r = -0.17; P < 0.05), lean meat yield (r = -0.38; P < 0.001), and yield grade (r = 0.32; P < 0.001). The corresponding genetic correlations were generally greater than the phenotypic correlations and included ultrasound backfat (r = 0.76 +/- 0.19), carcass 12th-rib fat (r = 0.54 +/- 0.23), ultrasound marbling (r = 0.27 +/- 0.22), carcass marbling (r = 0.76 +/- 0.21), ultrasound LM area (r = -0.71 +/- 0.19), carcass LM area (r = -0.75 +/- 0.20), lean meat yield (r = -0.59 +/- 0.22), and yield grade (r = 0.39 +/- 0.26). AIM: To examine the relationships between workplace bullying, destructive leadership and team conflict, and physical health, strain, self-reported performance and intentions to quit among veterinarians in New Zealand, and how these relationships could be moderated by psychological capital and perceived organisational support.

METHODS: Data were collected by means of an online survey, distributed to members of the New Zealand Veterinary Association. Participation was voluntary and all responses were anonymous and confidential. Scores for the variables measured were based on responses to questions or statements with responses categorised on a linear scale. A series of regression analyses were used to assess mediation or moderation by intermediate variables on the relationships between predictor variables and dependent variables.

RESULTS: Completed surveys were provided by 197 veterinarians, of which 32 (16.2%) had been bullied at work, i.e. they had experienced two or more negative acts at least weekly over the previous 6 months, and nine (4.6%) had experienced cyber-bullying. Mean scores for workplace bullying were higher for female than male respondents, and for non-managers than managers (p<0.01). Scores for workplace bullying were positively associated with scores for destructive leadership and team conflict, physical health, strain, and intentions to quit (p<0.001). Workplace bullying and team conflict mediated the relationship between destructive leadership and strain, physical health and intentions to quit. Perceived organisational support moderated the effects of workplace bullying on strain and self-reported job performance (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: Relatively high rates of negative behaviour were reported by veterinarians in this study, with 16% of participants meeting an established criterion for having been bullied. The negative effects of destructive leadership on strain, physical health and intentions to quit were mediated by team conflict and workplace bullying. It should be noted that the findings of this study were based on a survey of self-selected participants and the findings may not represent the wider population of New Zealand veterinarians.  相似文献

Summary Thirty-six weaner Large White piglets were randomly assigned to 3 replicates of 3 treatments to determine the effects of feeding 0, 10 or 20% of cattle manure in partial replacement of ground maize in the diet. The trial lasted 15 weeks. Feed efficiency was not significantly affected. However, pigs fed on the control diet consumed significantly more feed than pigs on the experimental diets containing cattle manure, and although their higher daily weight gain was not statistically significant, at the end of the trial they were significantly heavier (P<0·05) than those fed the diet containing 20% cattle manure. Carcasses from pigs fed on the diets containing cattle manure were leaner than pigs fed on the control diet.

Resumen Un total de 36 cerdos recién destetados de raza Large White fueros distribuídos al azar en 3 réplicas de 3 tratamientos que tuvieron como objetivo determinar los efectos de incluir en la dieta 0, 10 o 20% de estiércol de vaca en sustitución parcial de maiz. El ensayo duró 15 semanas. La eficiencia alimentaria no se vió afectada de forma significative. Sin embargo, los cerdos alimentados con la dieta control consumieron más alimento que los animales que recibieron dietas con estiercol de vaca. Además, si bien el creciemiento diario de los animales control no fue significativamente distinto, al final del ensayo su peso vivo fue significativamente superior (p<0·05) al de los animales que recibieron una dieta con un 20% de estiercol de vaca. Las canales de los cerdos que recibieron dietas con estiercol tuvieron un porcentaje de grasa inferior al de las canales de los animales control.

Résumé 36 porcelets sevrés de l'espèce Large White furent répartis sur 3 traitements (avec 3 replicats chacun) pour déterminer les effects for l'alimentation avec, 0, 10 ou 20% en fumier bovin en replacement partiel du maïs dans leur nourriture. L'expérience dura 15 semaines. L'efficacité de la nourriture ne fut pas affectée, de façon significative. Cependant, les porcs nourris par l'alimention de contrôle, consoemmèrent plus de nourriture que ceux, alimentés expérimentalement avec le fumier bovin, et bien que les gains journaliers furent plus élevés mais non de façon significative, les porcs de contrôle furent de façon significative plus lourds (P<0, 05) que ceux nourris avec 20% de fumier bovin. Les carcasses de porc nourrit avec du fumier bovin furent plus maigres que ceux issus du groupe de contrôle.
