We discovered serendipitously a new and highly effective intervention against Striga spp., including Striga hermonthica (African witchweed), in cereals, which involves intercropping with cattle fodder legumes, Desmodium spp., including D. uncinatum . Although soil shading and additional nitrogen made some contribution to the reduction of S. hermonthica infestation, an allelopathic mechanism associated with the intercrop was a major factor. Root exudates of D. uncinatum contain novel flavonoid compounds, some of which stimulate germination of S. hermonthica and others dramatically inhibit its subsequent development, including radicle growth. Desmodium spp. have been developed as intercrops for both maize and sorghum and are now being evaluated for millet. From the experience with Desmodium spp., there is now the possibility for producing edible legumes suitable for intercropping with maize and other cereals to respond to a broader profile of farmer practices. These legumes would incorporate the powerful S. hermonthica controlling properties of D. uncinatum through feasible breeding programmes, with appropriate contributions from analytical chemistry to plant molecular genetics and biotechnology. In the longer term, it may also be possible to transfer genes associated with the allelopathic attributes to cereals themselves by heterologous gene expression, creating a new generation of parasitic weed-free cereals.  相似文献

This study aimed to demonstrate the association of the ash dieback pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus with leaf symptoms on Fraxinus excelsior and to test its pathogenicity towards leaves of three European ash species, F. excelsior, F. angustifolia and F. ornus, in wound inoculation experiments. On F. excelsior, H. fraxineus was isolated from 94% of leaf rachises with necrotic lesions and from 74% of necrotic leaflet midribs. Following wound inoculation of leaf rachises, in two separate experiments performed in 2010 and 2011, the ash dieback pathogen caused symptoms (necrotic rachis lesions, leaf wilting and premature leaf shedding) on all three ash species, while control leaves remained symptomless. Hymenoscyphus fraxineus was consistently reisolated from fungus‐inoculated rachises. All 10 isolates tested were pathogenic to the three ash species and varied in virulence. Koch's postulates for H. fraxineus as causal agent of leaf symptoms on F. excelsior were fulfilled in this study. Complemented with the isolation of the fungus from naturally infected, symptomatic leaf rachises of F. angustifolia and F. ornus in previous investigations, H. fraxineus was confirmed to be a leaf pathogen of these ash species as well. The leaf inoculation experiments showed that F. excelsior was highly susceptible to H. fraxineus, F. angustifolia was equally or slightly less susceptible, whereas F. ornus was the least affected species; however, F. ornus should also be regarded as a host tree for the ash dieback pathogen. This susceptibility ranking corresponds well with field observations and previous stem inoculation experiments.  相似文献

Anguina obesa n. sp., a new species of the genus, causing small seed galls inside the ovaries of foxtail weed plants (Alopecurus mysuroides Huds.) is described and illustrated based on its morphological and molecular characters. The new species is characterized by its 1516–2564 μm long obese females irregularly ventrally curved after fixation, having six lines in lateral fields, 6–9 μm long stylet with well-developed rounded knobs, constriction at junction of isthmus with the pharyngeal bulb, monodelphic-prodelphic female reproductive system, and conical, 60–80 μm long tail. Males of the new species are characterized with their slender 936–1420 μm long body, 25–30 μm long tylenchoid spicules, and bursa not reaching tail tip. Second stage juveniles of the new species were also common inside the galls and also recovered from soil in type locality. The new species is morphologically close to Anguina agropyronifloris, A. amsinckiae, A. paludicola and A. tumefaciens, but is more closely related to A. paludicola, from which it can be separated based on differences in morphological characters and internal transcribed spacer sequence. In Bayesian inference using sequences of the aforementioned genomic fragment, the new species formed a clade with A. agrostis, A. funesta, A. graminis, A. phalaridis and some unidentified isolates, with robust Bayesian posterior probability (BPP). The morphologically closest species, A. paludicola, occupied a separate position, outside of the clade containing the new species. The sequences of two other genomic fragments, 18S and 28S rDNA (D2/D3 region) were also made available for the new species. Morphological comparisons of the new species with the related species are discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop a multiplex PCR detection method for the high-temperature-growing pathogens Pythium aphanidermatum, P. helicoides and P. myriotylum. Species-specific primer pairs were designed that targeted the rDNA ITS regions. The multiplex PCR was constructed with a universal primer pair for eukaryotes directed at the 18S rDNA as a positive control, in addition to the three species-specific primer pairs. When the multiplex PCR was applied to naturally infested soils, the expected species were reliably identified, suggesting that the method is suitable for the detection of the three Pythium pathogens in environmental samples.  相似文献

As part of a metazoan parasite survey of elasmobranchs from Malaysian Borneo, specimens of Rhoptrobothrium Shipley et Hornell, 1906 were collected from the eagle rays Aetomylaeus maculatus (Gray) and Aetomylaeus niehofii (Bloch et Schneider). The type species is redescribed from its type host, and a neotype specimen is designated. In addition, three new species of Rhoptrobothrium are described: R. chongi sp. n., R. gambangi sp. n. and R. limae sp. n. Rhoptrobothrium myliobatidis conspicuously differs from the three new species in its lack of a secondary areola; R. limae is distinguished from R. chongi and R. gambangi based on its greater total length; R. chongi possesses conspicuously stalked remi, while R. gambangi possesses short remi, often folded anteriorly. Rhoptrobothrium is somewhat unusual among tetraphyllideans in its possession of a "metascolex," a character it shares with other taxa in the Thysanocephalinae (i.e., Myzocephalus Shipley et Hornell, 1906, Myzophyllobothrium Shipley et Hornell, 1906 and Thysanocephalum Linton, 1889). The morphology of the "metascolex" of Rhoptrobothrium is investigated and new terminology is suggested to standardise the names given to structures constituting a metascolex. As a result, Rhoptrobothrium is considered to possess cephalic peduncle extensions, termed remi. In Rhoptrobothrium, each remus bears, at its distal end, a primary areola, and, in the case of the three new species, also a secondary areola proximal to the primary areola. Myzocephalus and Myzophyllobothrium are tentatively considered to possess remi; the configuration of the "metascolex" of Thysanocephalum, however, is not considered homologous to the condition in the other three genera currently placed in the Thysanocephalinae.  相似文献

A new species, Gnathia nkulu sp. n. is described from material collected off the South African coast at 80-200m depth. It differs from the intertidal species Gnathia africana Barnard, 1914 in that the mediofrontal process is not deeply divided into two lobes, article 2 of the pylopod is rounded and small wart-like tubercles and long simple setae are present on both the cephalosome and pereon.  相似文献

A new species of Taeniacanthidae (Copepoda, Cyclopoida), Taeniacanthus kiemae sp. n., is described based on adult female and male specimens collected from the branchial cavity wall of Marilyna meraukensis (de Beaufort) and M. darwinii (Castelnau) (Teleostei, Tetraodontidae) caught in Australian waters. The new species differs from its congeners by having the following combination of characters in the adult female: (1) maxilla armed with a stout terminal process and two small elements; (2) multiple rows of spinules on the large pectinate process of the antenna; (3) an extremely long and thin maxilliped claw; (4) second exopodal segment of leg 1 with eight setae; (5) third exopodal segment of leg 3 with three spines and four setae; (6) third exopodal segment of leg 4 with three spines and two setae; and (7) each spine on the free exopodal segment of leg 5 with a subterminal flagellum. Taeniacanthus kiemae is the second copepod species reported from M. meraukensis and M. darwinii and the first taeniacanthid species reported from pufferfishes in Australia.  相似文献

The attractiveness of different combinations of volatile compounds to several scolytid and cerambycid species, potential vectors of phytoparasitic nematodes of the genus Bursaphelenchus Fuchs, was investigated in pine woods of central Italy. The blend composed of α-pinene, ethanol, ipsenol, ipsdienol and 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol was very efficient in trapping the cerambycids Monochamus galloprovincialis, Acanthocinus griseus and Arhopalus syriacus and the scolytids Ips sexdentatus, Orthotomicus erosus and Hylurgus ligniperda. This blend is proposed for operational surveys of Bursaphelenchus spp. associated with these beetles. Comparison of the capture levels with cross-vane and funnel traps baited with α-pinene, ethanol, ipsenol, ipsdienol, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and cis-verbenol revealed the higher efficacy of the cross-vane traps for the above-mentioned cerambycids and the scolytid I. sexdentatus but greater effectiveness of the funnel traps in capturing H. ligniperda and O. erosus. Cross-vane traps were more efficient in capturing large numbers of these insects. Data on non-target xylophagous beetles and predator species are also reported.  相似文献

The flight and parasitism capacities and emergence rate of fiveTrichogramma species [T. acacioi (Brun),T. bruni (Nagaraja),T. demoraesi (Nagaraja),T. maxacalii (Voegelé & Pointel) andT. soaresi (Nagaraja)] were compared. The flight capacity of these parasitoids was assessed in test units. A tube was placed inside each test unit with a piece of card with 300Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs parasitized by one of theTrichogramma species. The emerged adults inside the test units were classified according to their position as flyers, non-flyers and walkers. Cards withA. kuehniella eggs, parasitized by one of theTrichogramma species, were assessed to determine the parasitism rate and emergence of these natural enemies. Laboratory studies assessing the degree of suitability of the mealybugs Planococcus ficus (Signoret), Planococcus citri (Risso) and Pseudococcus calceolariae (Maskell), towards the Sicilian ecotype of the encyrtid parasitoid Anagyrus sp. nr. pseudococci were carried out. All three species of mealybugs were shown to encapsulate the eggs of the encyrtid; however, significant differences were revealed among them in rates of encapsulation and/or superparasitism. The level of aggregate encapsulation and effective encapsulation of the parasitoid eggs by P. citri (74.95 ± 0.87 and 60.19 ± 1.70, respectively) was significantly higher than that recorded for P. ficus (aggregate encapsulation = 58.43 ± 0.83 and effective encapsulation = 31.31 ± 1.55) and significantly lower than the values found in Ps. calceolariae (93.99 ± 0.97 and 88.61 ± 2.03, respectively). As such, rates of parasitism were significantly lower for P. ficus compared with both P. citri and Ps. calceolariae. The two latter species of mealybugs showed similar rates of parasitism by A. sp. nr. pseudococci. Moreover, a significantly higher rate of superparasitism was found for Ps. calceolariae compared with both P. citri and P. ficus, whereas no significant differences were found between the two species of Planococcus for this parameter.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of native Thai species for reclaiming salt-affected areas in Thailand. Plant species diversity in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in northeast Thailand, and their soil characteristics (texture, electrical conductivity (ECe), exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), and pH) were measured. A total of 19 species in 16 genera of 12 families were found, among which the most abundant species belonged to the Poaceae and Cyperaceae families. The highest values of ECe were found near the surface (0–20?cm) with an average range between 30–80?dS?m?1, while lower values in the range of 15–25?dS?m?1 were found at lower depths (20–100?cm). Soil conditions in the subplots with plant coverage showed lower ECe and ESP when compared to plots without vegetation. Seeds from the three most frequently occurring species, including Azima sarmentosa, Gymnosporia mekongensis, and Buchanania siamensis, were then tested for germination at different salinities. Seeds of all three species germinated at high salinities, from 25–45?dS?m?1, with total germination ranging 40–90%. Together with the ability to germinate at high salinities, these native species showed deep, rapid root elongation, likely to escape high surface ECe levels (approximately the top 30?cm). Planting these species in areas with vegetation coverage would aid successful reclamation of saline areas. Reclaiming salt-affected soils will not only improve local farmer’s economic status, but can also reduce the extent of deforestation, benefiting the entire ecosystem.  相似文献

Docks can be serious weeds of arable land and permanent grasslands where they can persist through well‐established root systems. A Rumex hybrid (R. patientia x R. tianschanicus; cv. OK‐2, Uteusha) has been planted as a forage and energy crop since 2001 in Czechia and has now become a new weed species. As its ecological characteristics are unknown, there is a need for improved knowledge for developing control measures and strategies. In 2010 and 2011, we performed a tube pot experiment to investigate above‐ground and below‐ground biomass growth dynamics and below‐ground biomass allocation of Rumex OK‐2. We compared the hybrid with Rumex crispus and Rumex obtusifolius during the vegetation season in the seeding year. Above‐ground and below‐ground biomass of Rumex species tended to increase from July to September. In the seeding year, flowering was recorded only for one plant of Rumex OK‐2 and 27.5% of R. obtusifolius plants, whereas R. crispus did not flower. The proportion of below‐ground biomass of Rumex species in the upper 30 cm was about 70–80%. The growth dynamics and allocation of below‐ground biomass of Rumex OK‐2 were more like R. crispus than to R. obtusifolius. These similarities indicate the potential of Rumex OK‐2 to become a troublesome weedy species, comparable with R. crispus.  相似文献

Reports on demodicid mites of the old world species of deer are reviewed and Demodex kutzeri sp. n. (= D. cervi sensu Kutzer and Grünberg 1972; part.) described in all stages of the life cycle. The occurrence of D. kutzeri on two host species, Cervus elaphus L., 1758 and C. nippon pseudaxis Eydoux et Souleyet, 1841 is reported and discussed as a rare phenomenon in the genus Demodex.  相似文献

The Fusarium species complex of maize kernels and stem pieces as well as mycotoxin contamination of commercial grain maize hybrids for animal feed were evaluated in Switzerland. Throughout 2 years, natural Fusarium infection varied significantly between the years and the locations and it ranged from 0.4% to 49.7% for kernels and from 24.2% to 83.8% for stem pieces. Using the agar plate method, 16 different Fusarium species were isolated from kernels and 15 from stem pieces. The Fusarium species composition, prevalence and impact differed between the north and the south and between kernel and stem piece samples. The dominant species on kernels in the north were F. verticillioides (32.9%), F. graminearum (31.3%), F. proliferatum (7.3%) and F. crookwellense (7.1%), in the south F. verticillioides (57.1%), F. subglutinans (24.6%), F. proliferatum (14.8%) and F. graminearum (1.5%) and on stem pieces F. equiseti (36.0%), F. verticillioides (20.1%), F. graminearum (9.5%), F. crookwellense (6.2%) and F. subglutinans (6.2%). In the south, fumonisin concentration of most hybrids exceeded guidance values for animal feed. Other Fusarium species isolated were F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. oxysporum, F. poae, F. sambucinum, F. semitectum, F. sporotrichioides, F. solani, F. tricinctum and F. venenatum. Maize hybrids varied in their susceptibility to Fusarium infection. Because of the high diversity of Fusarium species encountered in Switzerland representing a high toxigenic potential, we propose to screen maize hybrids for resistance against various Fusarium species and examine maize produce for several mycotoxins in order to ensure feed safety.  相似文献
