Mink nursing sickness is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia that is similar to the metabolic syndrome associated with type 2, or non-insulin-dependent, diabetes mellitus. This research studied the effects of short-term administration of antidiabetic supplements on the blood glucose concentration in female mink during late lactation. Female mink that had blood glucose levels < 5.5 mmol/L (normoglycemic [NG]) or > or = 5.5 mmol/L (hyperglycemic [HG]) early in lactation were given daily supplements of various combinations of herring oil (HerO, 3% in diet), chromium picolinate (CrPic, 200 microg), and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, 100 mg) for 1 wk starting at day 21 post partum. In the NG mink, most of the treatments did not significantly change the blood glucose concentration from day 28 to 42 post partum. However, treatment with ASA alone and treatment with the combination HerO-CrPic-ASA elevated the blood glucose levels when compared with those of the control group, which had received just the basal diet. In the HG mink, all treatment combinations except CrPic alone and ASA alone, reduced the blood glucose concentration. Thus, in lactating mink with hyperglycemia, the blood glucose concentration may be effectively lowered by dietary antidiabetic supplementation; however, because hyperglycemia also occurs before nursing, preventive measures are recommended throughout the year.  相似文献

The effects of addition of evening primrose oil (EPO) to a mink diet in the breeding season on the reproductive performance and kit and female performance during the lactation period were investigated in an experiment with 4 groups of male and female mink. Matings were carried out so that control males were mated to both control and supplemented females. Similarly, supplemented males mated both control and supplemented females. Reproductive results were evaluated both on a group basis and as an effect of male or female treatment, respectively. After males supplemented with EPO, there was a tendency for reduced rate of stillborn kits and kit losses during the first 21 days of life. These effects could not be explained physiologically. Female treatment did not affect reproductive performance, but there was a tendency for lower weight losses during lactation for EPO-supplemented females. Kit performance during the lactation period was independent of experimental treatment.  相似文献

The concentrations of IgG, IgM and IgA in sera collected from 3855 sows (3208 pregnant and 647 lactating) at a single time point were determined. This experimental design allowed changes in serum immunoglobulin over the reproductive cycle to be studied without bias from seasonal influence. The concentrations of the three immunoglobulins changed independently during the reproductive cycle. Serum levels of IgM and IgG began a progressive postpartal decline during the 14th–17th week of gestation. At the onset of lactation serum IgG levels progressively increased while IgM levels continued to decline, the latter reaching their lowest level during the third week of lactation. In contrast to IgM and IgG, serum IgA levels increased 35% during weeks 14–17 of gestation and continued to increase throughout lactation, reaching their highest serum levels in the third week of lactation; the serum IgA concentration at this time was twice that observed during the first 13 weeks of gestation. Results of these studies allowed the reproductive cycle to be classified into four phases on the basis of serum immunoglobulin concentrations: (1) weeks 1–4 of gestation; (2) weeks 5–13 of gestation; (3) weeks 14–17 of gestation and (4) lactation.  相似文献

The effects of feeding glucose during the 5 days before parturition on litter performance and on glucose concentration in sows were studied. At day 100 of gestation, 130 multiparous sows were assigned to the treatments. Late gestating sows were fed 0 g, 150 g, 250 g, 350 g and 450 g of glucose a day, respectively. During lactation, all sows were given free access to the same lactation diet (without glucose). One day before parturition, blood samples were collected from 30 sows (6 sows per treatment) at 10 before and 20, 40, 60 and 80 min after the meal. The supply of additional dietary glucose increased piglet birth weight ( P  < 0.05). Feed intake in week 1 and week 1–4 of lactation was greatest in sows fed the 0% glucose diet, least by sows fed the 18% glucose diet, and intermediate by sows fed the 6, 10, 14% glucose diets ( P  < 0.05). Basal glucose concentration and time of maximum glucose concentration after glucose intake were not affected by dietary treatment in the last 5 days of gestation. The sows fed the 14 and 18% glucose diets had greater maximum increase in glucose concentration than sows fed diet without glucose ( P  < 0.05). In conclusion, feeding glucose to sows during 5 days before parturition increased birth weight of live-born piglet and decreased sows feed intake during lactation, but did not affect the performance of sows and piglets.  相似文献

We measured a bone-formation marker recognizing osteocalcin, and a bone-resorption marker recognizing C-telopeptide (CT(x)) fragments of collagen type I, in a longitudinal study. The levels of these markers in the plasma of dairy cows (n=11) were recorded over a 12 month postpartum period, including a full lactation and a dry period. The plasma concentration of CT(x) was highest in the first week after parturition. It then declined slowly over the next 33 weeks and remained low until the next parturition. Osteocalcin concentration was lowest around parturition, reached a plateau during mid-lactation, then fell again towards term. There were large variations in bone metabolism during a lactation, that were not directly related to milk production. These results may be used to facilitate appropriate adjustments to calcium and phosphorous concentrations in the diet, reflecting the specific needs of each stage of the reproductive cycle.  相似文献

Nursing sickness, the largest single cause of mortality in adult female mink (Mustela vison), is an example of a metabolic disorder, which develops when the demands for lactation require extensive mobilization of body energy reserves. The condition is characterized by progressive weight loss, emaciation, and dehydration with high concentrations of glucose and insulin in the blood. Morbidity due to nursing sickness can be as high as 15% with mortality around 8%, but the incidence is known to vary from year to year. Stress has been shown to trigger the onset of the disease and old females and females with large litters are most often affected. Increasing demand for gluconeogenesis from amino acids due to heavy milk production may be a predisposing factor. Glucose metabolism is inextricably linked to that of protein and fats. In obesity (or lipodystrophy), the ability of adipose tissue to buffer the daily influx of nutrients is overwhelmed (or absent), interfering with insulin-mediated glucose disposal and leading to insulin resistance. Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 family play an important role in modulating insulin signalling and glucose uptake by peripheral tissue. The increasing demand on these fatty acids for milk fat synthesis towards late lactation may result in deficiency in the lactating female, thus impairing glucose disposal. It is suggested that the underlying cause of mink nursing sickness is the development of acquired insulin resistance with 3 contributing key elements: obesity (or lipodystrophy), n-3 fatty acid deficiency, and high protein oxidation rate. It is recommended that mink breeder females be kept in moderate body condition during fall and winter to avoid fattening or emaciation. A dietary n-3 fatty acid supplement during the lactation period may be beneficial for improved glycemic control. Lowering of dietary protein reduces (oxidative) stress and improves water balance in the nursing females and may, therefore, prevent the development and help in the management of nursing sickness. It is also surmised that other, thus far unexplained, metabolic disorders seen in male and female mink may be related to acquired insulin resistance.  相似文献

The effects of high dietary levels of fresh or moderately oxidised fish oil on performance and blood parameters in mink females were investigated during the winter, reproduction, and lactation periods. Furthermore, the effects of the diets on kit performance were investigated during the lactation and early growth periods. The investigation was carried out with a total of 292 females distributed in five experimental groups fed fresh fish oil stored frozen, fresh fish oil ensiled, oxidised fish oil stored frozen, oxidised fish oil ensiled, and soya oil, respectively. The females were weighed three times during the winter period, and the females and the kits were weighed at parturition and 2, 4, and 7 weeks post partum. Blood samples were collected from the females and the kits 6 and 8 weeks post partum, respectively. The results show that high dietary levels of fresh or moderately oxidised fish oil could be used for mink females during the winter and reproduction periods without any negative effects on performance, health and reproduction results. However, high levels of fish oil resulted in lower kit weights at weaning. These negative effects on kit growth were related to the dietary composition fed during the lactation and early growth periods and not to the diet used during the preceding winter and pregnancy periods. A high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids resulted in a decreased number of blood platelets for both mink females and their kits.  相似文献

Twenty‐four multiparous sows were used to investigate the effects of dietary glucose inclusion on reproductive performance, milk compositions, blood metabolites and hormones during lactation. The sows were randomly assigned to four treatments and each treatment had six replicates (sows). The diets were added with 0%, 1%, 3% or 5% glucose at the expense of corn and fed to sows for 24 days. The loss of backfat thickness during lactation was quadratically decreased (p = 0.008) and the wean‐to‐oestrus interval was shortened (linear, p = 0.013; quadratic, p = 0.009) with increasing levels of dietary glucose supplementation. The reproductive performance was not affected (p > 0.05) by different dietary glucose contents. Increased concentrations of total solid and fat in milk were noted (p < 0.05), whereas there was no difference on colostrum compositions. With increasing levels of dietary glucose inclusion, the concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (p = 0.004) and glucose (p = 0.029) were linearly increased at weaning. The concentrations of insulin were increased at post‐farrowing (linear, p = 0.027; quadratic p = 0.013) and weaning (linear, p = 0.029; quadratic, p = 0.017), respectively. Furthermore, the pulses of insulin and FSH at weaning were linearly (p = 0.049) and quadratically (p = 0.015) increased with the increasing levels of dietary glucose inclusion. In conclusion, this study indicated that inclusion of 3% glucose in lactating diet could reduce backfat loss, increase milk fat and have no negative effect on reproductive performance in multiparous sows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether nutrient digestibility and reproductive performance of pregnant mink(Neovison vison) were affected by different dietary protein levels. One hundred and twenty female mink were randomly assigned to four groups, receiving diets of fresh material with different protein levels. The dietary protein levels, expressed as percentage of dry matter(DM),were 32,36, 40 and 44% respectively. These values corresponded to average 320, 360, 400 and 440 g protein/kg DM, respectively. Results were as follows. All of crude protein digestibility, nitrogen(N) intake, N retention increased along with dietary protein level increasing. Low protein level(32%) significantly reduced the above indicators(P 0.05). DM digestibility and ether extract digestibility were not affected by dietary protein level. Results of mated females, barren females, kids per litter, live born kids per mated female, birth survival rate, and birth weight showed that mink achieved optimal reproductive performance when dietary protein level was 36%. In conclusion, dietary protein was anticipated to significantly influence some nutrients' utilization. Adopting the appropriate dietary protein level allow better reproduction performance. The most preferable reproductive performance was achieved when diet contained 275.5 g digestible protein per kg DM for female mink in gestation.  相似文献

The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of a varying maternal vitamin B6 supplementation during lactation period on vitamin B6 levels in blood, liver and total body, and on the activity of two transaminase enzymes in the offspring. Therefore, eighty female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a semi-synthetic diet (0.2 mg vitamin B6 per kg) which was supplemented during gravidity with 5 mg vitamin B6 per kg diet. During the following lactation period the rats were assigned to one of 10 vitamin B6 treatment groups (supplementation of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 36, 360, 3600 mg vitamin B6 per kg diet). At day 14 of lactation the pubs of all dams were decapitated and blood, liver, and carcass were used for analysis of vitamin B6 concentration, activities of two transaminases, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in plasma, erythrocytes, and liver, and of haematological parameters. While the liver and total body wet weights as well as the haematological parameters (red blood cells, haemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, middle corpuscular cell volume, middle corpuscular haemoglobin, middle corpuscular haemoglobin concentration) did not differ within the experimental groups, the present data clearly show that in blood, liver and total body of the offspring exists a slight dose-response relationship between the maternal dietary vitamin B6 supplementation and the vitamin B6 concentration. Concerning the activities of the transaminases a dietary supplementation above 3 mg vitamin B6 per kg diet had no influence on the AST and ALT activities in offspring plasma. In the erythrocytes no statistical significant influence of the vitamin B6 supplementation during lactation on the activities of AST and ALT was found. The activities of ALT and AST in liver were not consistently altered by the vitamin B6 supplementation of the dams during lactation. In conclusion these results indicate that a minimal maternal dietary vitamin B6 supply of 3.1 mg per kg diet is necessary with regard to health and development of their offspring. But not all of the analysed parameters as the liver and total body weights, the activities of AST and ALT in the erythrocytes, and the haematological parameters were influenced by a deficient maternal dietary vitamin B6 supply.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of various maternal dietary riboflavin supplementations during gravidity and lactation on riboflavin concentrations in blood, liver, and total body of their offspring. Therefore, two experiments with a total of 154 female rats were conducted. In the first experiment the animals received a semisynthetic diet (basal riboflavin concentration of 0.9 mg/kg diet) with various riboflavin supplementations during lactation (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 40, 400, 4000 mg riboflavin/kg diet). In the second experiment, during gravidity, the rats were fed supplements of 1 or 20 mg riboflavin/kg diet. After parturition each group was divided into three subgroups that received 1, 5 or 20 mg riboflavin/kg with their feed during the following lactation. Both investigations continued until the 14th day of the lactation period just before the pups would start to eat the diets. The total body weights of the offspring in the first experiment only showed an effect of the riboflavin supplementation during lactation in the riboflavin‐deficient group (supplementation of 0 mg/kg diet). Regarding the second experiment, the total body and liver weights of the offspring on the 14th day of lactation were not significantly influenced by the various maternal riboflavin supplements during gravidity and lactation. The data of the first experiment clearly show that there exists a slight dose‐response relationship between the maternal dietary riboflavin supplementation during lactation and the riboflavin concentration in the blood and total body of the offspring. However, a riboflavin supplementation over 8 mg/kg diet led to a saturation of the riboflavin concentration in the body. Also, a dietary supplementation above 2 mg riboflavin/kg diet had no influence on the liver riboflavin concentration. The second investigation showed that the riboflavin concentration in all samples was influenced predominantly by the maternal riboflavin supply during lactation. The riboflavin supply during gravidity had no or only a very slight effect on the riboflavin concentrations in blood, liver, and total body of the offspring. In conclusion, these results indicate the necessity of a sufficient maternal dietary riboflavin supply (8–9 mg/kg diet) during lactation in regard to the health of their offspring and that a high riboflavin supply during gravidity cannot compensate for a deficient supply during lactation.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to assess the effects of substitution milk and egg for soya products in breeding diets for rats, with concomitant decrease of the dietary protein level and supplementation with amino acids. Soya-containing (S) and two soya-free (NS and NSA) diets were evaluated as protein and energy sources, and their effects on reproductive performance during two cycles, and on the quality of the offspring were assessed. Organ weights were registered in females and blood parameters were determined in males. In the offspring males from S and NS groups, plasma LH, testosterone and prolactin levels were measured on the 22nd and the 60th day of life. The S diet contained more protein of smaller concentration of methionine and cystine and lower biological value than both NS and NSA diets and promoted similar post-weaning growth rate, similar body weight changes of dams during gestation and lactation and slightly lower mating efficiency. Within each reproductive cycle, the number and individual and total body weight of newborn and weanling pups did not differ but in two cycles mean number of neonates per litter and mean litter weight were significantly lower on S than on NSA diet. Plasma concentration of hormones did not differ in 22-day-old offspring males while in the older ones LH and prolactin levels were higher in animals fed on S than on NS diet. It is concluded that replacing soya protein by milk and egg protein with concomitant lowering dietary protein level and amino acid supplementation does not impair the growth rate and tends to improve reproductive performance. Feeding soya-free vs. soya-containing diets differentiates hormonal status of young males.  相似文献

In female pigs feeding level has important effects on reproductive performance. This review is focused on the follicular development after low and high feeding levels during the luteal phase in gilts. Although aspects of diet composition seem to have a role in regulating reproductive performance, the most important aspect appears to be the plane of nutrition. Similar effects are described during lactation in primiparous sows, when their metabolism is challenged to its maximum. Also in this situation feeding level clearly affects weaning to oestrus interval, follicular development, oocyte maturation, ovulation rate and subsequent embryonic survival.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in Polish farmed mink according to way of feeding as well as to confirm the role of toxoplasmosis in reproductive losses in mink farms. The serological examinations were carried out on 961 mink randomly selected from 12 Polish farms. Blood sera were examined for the presence of T. gondii antibodies with the use of the latex agglutination test. The examinations for the presence of T. gondii in organ tissues were performed on five neonatal mink kits with the use of immunofluorescence method. In total 133 (13.9%) out of 961 examined mink had T. gondii antibodies. In large farms the seropositivity was lower (2.9%), than in small farms (26.33%) (P < 0.001). Significant difference was found in seroprevalence according to way of feeding. In farms feeding fish, percentage of seropositivity was lower (2.2%), than in farms based on non-frozen slaughter offal (43.4%). Titres of T. gondii antibodies were usually lower than 120 IU/ml. Using the immunofluorescence method, T. gondii was detected in impression smears from liver and brain of two neonatal mink kits derived from one seropositive female.  相似文献

Our objective was to study the effects of dietary-induced insulin enhancement during and after lactation on the reproductive performance of primiparous sows. During a 21-d lactation period, 48 sows were allotted to a 2x2 factorial experiment. Treatments were feeding level (high or low; 44 MJ or 33 MJ NE/d) and dietary energy source (fat or starch). After weaning, all sows received the same amount of feed (31 MJ NE/d from weaning to estrus and 17.5 MJ NE/d from breeding until slaughter) of the same energy source as fed during lactation. On d 7, 14, and 21 of lactation and d 22 (weaning), blood samples were taken every 12 min for 12 h and analyzed for plasma glucose, insulin, and LH. Sows were slaughtered on d 35 of the subsequent pregnancy, and ovulation rate was assessed. During lactation, postprandial plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were higher for sows fed the starch diet than for those fed the fat diet (P<.001), whereas feeding level had no effect. Basal and mean LH concentrations were not affected by treatments. The LH pulse frequency on d 7 of lactation was greater for sows fed the starch diet than for those fed the fat diet (.52 vs .17 pulses/12 h; P = .03). The high compared with the low feeding level resulted in a greater LH pulse frequency on d 21 of lactation (.89 vs .47 pulses/12 h; P = .05) and on d 22 (8.63 vs 5.77 pulses/12 h; P = .02), in a higher percentage of sows that exhibited estrus within 10 d after weaning (96 vs. 63%; P = .01), and a tendency for a higher ovulation rate (18.0 vs. 16.2; P = .09). Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were not related to any of the LH traits. The LH pulse frequency after weaning was related to the weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) and was best explained by a linear-plateau model. In sows fed the low feeding level, follicle size after weaning was correlated with LH pulse frequency after weaning and with the WEI, whereas in sows fed the high feeding level these correlations were not significant. Our results indicate that an improved dietary-induced insulin status during and after lactation does not overcome the inhibitory effects of lactation on subsequent reproduction at any of the feeding levels.  相似文献

We measured the plasma levels of amino acids at various reproductive stages in female rats, including the estrous cycle, pregnancy and lactation, and compared the resulting amino acid profiles using two- or three-dimensional figures. These figures revealed that the amino acid profiles of pregnant and lactating dams differed considerably from those during the estrous cycle or in male rats. The plasma levels of individual amino acids were almost the same between proestrus, estrus, metestrus and diestrus, and their profiles did not differ significantly. However, the amino acid profiles changed during pregnancy and lactation in dams. The plasma Ser level decreased significantly in mid and late pregnancy, whereas Tyr, Gly and His decreased significantly in the late and end stages of pregnancy, and Trp and Lys significantly decreased and increased at the end of pregnancy, respectively. Much larger changes in amino acid profiles were observed during lactation, when the levels of many amino acids increased significantly, and none showed a significant decrease. Plasma Pro, Ser and Gly levels increased continuously from day 1 until day 15 of lactation, whereas Asn and Met increased significantly from days 1 and 5 respectively until the end of lactation. These results suggest that the profiles of plasma amino acids show characteristic changes according to reproductive stage and that it may be necessary to consider such differences when performing amino acid-based diagnosis.  相似文献

Forty Holstein dairy cows were used to determine the effects of forage feeding system, season and stage of lactation on some blood parameters. Blood urea nitrogen was higher for cows consuming higher levels of crude protein and particularly for the ones on pasture. Hemoglobin and packed cell volume values were correlated with the level of crude protein intake and stage of lactation. Lower values of these parameters were observed with lower crude protein intake and in early lactation. Serum levels of albumin, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium and potassium were not affected either by forage system, season or stage of lactation. Serum magnesium level was lower for forage system containing corn silage. Blood glucose was lower for cows in early lactation but was not affected by feeding systems during winter. Cows on pasture had higher blood glucose levels. Lower total protein concentration in blood was observed between 90 and 180 days of lactation as a result of lower gammaglobulins. Blood parameters are good indicators of nitrogen and energy nutritional status of dairy cows. However, blood mineral concentrations are not related to the level of mineral intake of animals.  相似文献

This study investigated whether undernutrition (UN) during late fetal life can programme the subsequent adult life adaptation of glucose homeostasis and metabolism during pregnancy and lactation. Twenty-four primiparous experimental ewes were used. Twelve had been exposed to a prenatal NORM level of nutrition (maternal diet 15 MJ ME/d) and 12 to a LOW level of nutrition (maternal diet 7 MJ ME/d) during the last 6 weeks pre-partum. The experimental ewes were subjected to two intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IGTT) in late gestation (one prior to (G-IGTT) and one by the end of a feed restriction period (RG-IGTT)), and a third around peak lactation (L-IGTT). LOW had lower basal insulin concentrations during lactation, and significantly decreased absolute insulin secretion during the L-IGTT in spite of similar glucose tolerance, indicating increased insulin sensitivity in LOW during lactation. There was no effect of prenatal UN on glucose tolerance during G-IGTT, however, during RG-IGTT LOW was more glucose intolerant and apparently more insulin resistant compared to NORM. In conclusion, UN during late fetal life in sheep impairs subsequent pancreatic insulin secretory capacity during adult life, and reduces plasticity of down-regulation of insulin secretion in response to a metabolic challenge. Furthermore, prenatal UN appears to programme mechanisms, which in young adult females can shift the insulin hypersensitivity observed during early lactation into an insulin resistance observed during late gestation and feed restriction. Early postnatal UN caused by lowered milk intake in early postnatal life may have contributed to these phenomena.  相似文献

The effect of lasalocid (140 mg . head-1 . d-1) on sow reproductive performance and subsequent piglet performance during lactation were examined in a trial that involved 114 sows. Treatments consisted of 1) control diet with no lasalocid during gestation and lactation; 2) lasalocid diet during gestation, control diet during lactation; 3) control diet during gestation and lasalocid diet during lactation; and 4) lasalocid diet during gestation and lactation. The addition of lasalocid either to gestation or lactation diets had no effect (P greater than .10) on sow weight gains or days to return to estrus postweaning. Milk protein percentages were similar (P greater than .10) for sows in all treatment groups for samples taken at 3, 7 and 14 d postfarrowing. Milk fat percentages were higher (P less than .05) in fall-bred sows at d 3 for Treatments 1, 3 and 4 than for Treatment 2 No significant differences (P less than .10) were observed for litter size at birth, 21 d postfarrowing or at weaning. Piglet weights at birth, 21 d and weaning were similar (P less than .10) among treatment groups. However, litter size and litter weight gains tended to be heavier at 21 d postfarrowing and at weaning for fall-bred sows fed lasalocid in either gestation and (or) lactation compared with those fed the control diet.  相似文献
