In laboratory experiments to clarify earlier field observations, Sitona lepidus larvae caused significant damage to established clover plants at infestations of approximately 1–2 per plant. When eggs were placed on the soil, cultivars of differing cyanogenic capacity were damaged equally. The plants did not recover when larval feeding ended.
Leatherjackets, slugs and 'lucerne flea' fed most on the least cyanogenic cultivars, even where no choice was offered. Plants ultimately recovered from damage by leatherjackets. Deroceras reticulatum caused more damage than did Arion fasciatus. The proportion of leaves damaged by lucerne fiea was highest in the least cyanogenic eultivar but also tended to increase in the most cyanogenic cultivar, confirming a field observation. At high population densities lucerne flea was capable of killing some seedlings but was not tested against established plants.  相似文献

The phenology and some aspects of the biology of the clover weevil Sitona lepidus Gyll. were studied in the field and the laboratory. Oviposition and hatching were temperature dependent. Most eggs were laid in September and October, although there was also an oviposition period in early summer. Hatching was largely confined to late spring and early summer. The relevance of this to control strategies is discussed.
Most eggs were laid on the plant but(were very easily dislodged and probably usually hatch on the ground. In no-choice tests, there were as many eggs laid on more cyanogenic as on less cyanogenic plants and cultivars. There was no evidence that the cyanogenic ability or any other cultivar characteristic would be useful in control strategies.  相似文献

In plots of perennial ryegrass and white clover, regular treatment with chlorpyrifos and methiocarb more than trebled the clover content of the sward, compared with untreated plots, in just over 2 years from sowing. Chlorpyrifos alone accounted for most of the effect, which was attributed mainly to the control of Sitona lepidus. Combined treatment increased total herbage dry matter yield by 4·24 t ha−1 during this period but had little effect on grass-only plots. Methiocarb appeared to have contributed by assisting earlier establishment of clover, but otherwise had little effect until slugs, which were initially uncommon, became more abundant in the later stages of the experiment. The effect of slug control was most noticeable in a cultivar of low cyanogenic potential. This factor did not influence the effect of chlorpyrifos.  相似文献

In two experiments in established swards of perennial ryegrass and white clover, plots were treated with pesticides to control slugs, leather-jackets, weevil larvae and lucerne flea as selectively as possible. Other plots were treated to control ail of these pests.
Chlorpyrifos application in early summer (to control weevil larvae) and methiocarb pellets (to control slugs) also gave partial control of leather-jackets. Other effects on non-target species were considered to be unimportant, as pest status could not be attributed to the species. A high level of control of lucerne flea by methiocarb pellets, noted previously, was confirmed.
At both sites combined treatment against insect pests and slugs produced large increases in clover content and yield over a 3-year period, in comparison with untreated plots, although clover tended to decline In alt plots. At one site, where the clover content of untreated plots reached 33% at one stage, specialist clover herbivores such as weevils and lucerne flea were more common. Treatments directed against weevils and slugs gave the highest clover yields, and leatherjacket control may also have contributed, particularly when the population reached 0.9 m ha−1 in the final year. At the other site, where the clover content was low (ultimately 01.1–6%), leather-jacket populations reached 2.1 m ha−1 and slug numbers were also relatively high. Control of these species contributed most to the relative increase in clover content and yield.  相似文献

In an experiment of four years duration, the competitive relationships between three cultivars of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) and ten cultivars of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) were studied under a N fertilizer regime of 200–240 kg ha-1 a-1. The clover cultivars were selected to embrace the various leaf sizes from medium large to small and the ryegrasses included early, mid-season and late cultivars with a known range of persistence.
During the experiment there was a progressive decline in the contribution of clover, though the different characteristics of each of the clover and ryegrass cultivars produced substantial deviations from the average trend. The clover cultivar Kersey was significantly more aggressive towards the companion grass cultivars than either S100 or S184. It produced consistently greater clover contribution to total yield than the other two cultivars and significantly depressed the yields of some of the companion grass cultivars. There was evidence that compatibility of the ryegrass cultivars with clover was inversely related to persistence; the non-persistent ryegrass cultivars S321 and Presto consistently produced lower grass yields than the more persistent cultivars and consequently permitted greater clover contribution. In the second and third years yield substitution effects between clover and grass components substantially reduced differences in the total grass-clover yield.
The interactions revealed in the experiment showed that both ryegrass and clover cultivars have the potential to influence each other when in association although, with minor exceptions, total annual yields were similar for all grass and clover mixtures at the moderately high level of N applied.  相似文献

Factors reducing yield of organic white clover seed production were investigated in Denmark. In thirty‐six fields from different regions, density of flower heads, and weevils of the genera Apion and Hypera, hatching from flower heads, were assessed. In fifteen of these fields, additional measurements were made in order to calculate potential yield and yield‐reducing factors. Flower heads had a mean of ninety‐two florets per head, of which proportionately 0·59 were intact, 0·08 were not pollinated and 0·34 damaged by weevils; 0·16 of the florets contained larvae of Apion species. In intact florets the mean number of seeds was 3·6. Density and size of flower heads were correlated with low density of flower heads leading to significantly more florets per head. The number of seeds per intact floret was correlated with the proportion of unpollinated florets. The number of insect‐damaged florets was influenced by both larvae of Apion in and the numbers of Hypera nigrirostris (Fabr.) hatched from flower heads. One larva of H. nigrirostris caused approximately ten times the damage of a larva of Apion. Densities of Apion and Hypera were influenced by location, with fields with adjacent weevil sources being most at risk. An estimate of potential seed yield showed that, even under good harvest conditions, only a small part of potential seed yield is realized and that under suboptimal harvest conditions seed loss is high. The main factors responsible for low yields in Danish organic white clover seed production were identified as unfavourable harvest conditions and weevil damage.  相似文献

As a preliminary step in testing the hypothesis that ingestion of cyanogenic glycosides in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) may be one of the risk factors for equine grass sickness (EGS, or equine dysautonomia), the cyanogen content of clover leaves collected from fields (n = 16) soon after an occurrence of EGS was compared with that of (i) control white clover samples (n = 10) collected from the same fields out of the disease period and (ii) control clover samples (n = 54) collected sequentially from three control fields. Clover samples from EGS fields were highly cyanogenic, with a median cyanide potential of 497 (range 307–1786) mg kg dry matter?1. Furthermore, clover collected from EGS fields soon after an occurrence of EGS had significantly higher concentrations of the cyanogenic glycosides linamarin and lotaustralin than control samples. While these findings indicate that horses grazing EGS fields may ingest significant quantities of cyanogenic glycosides, the design of the study does not facilitate investigation of any potential association between cyanogens and EGS. Further study is therefore required to determine whether cyanogens are a risk factor for EGS or whether these findings simply reflect variations in plant metabolism unrelated to disease pathogenesis.  相似文献

Nitrogen fertilizer was applied at 0, 30,60 and 90 kg N ha-1 in March 1976, 1977 and 1978 to plots containing perennial ryegrass cv. Barlenna sown either alone or with white clover cv. Blanca, Sabeda, Olwen and S100 in four replicated blocks.
Dry matter (DM) yield of all swards responded positively to N with the response being highest in the no-clover swards in two of the three years. Annual DM yields were lower in the no-clover than in the mixed swards at any given N level. The higher levels of N reduced DM yield in mixed swards at some harvests in midsummer.
Swards of S100 were consistently among the lower yielding mixed swards, whereas the other three clover cultivars varied in their relative yields. There were no N x cultivar interactions for white clover yields; irrespective of cultivar, N application reduced annual white clover yield by similar amounts.
It is concluded that it is beneficial to apply moderate amounts of N fertilizer to mixed swards in spring and that under these conditions the yield differences between swards including medium-large and smaller leaved white clover cultivars are similar to differences between the inherent yield potential of these cultivars in mixed swards receiving no N.  相似文献

The effect of cyanide concentration and plant morphology on the relative acceptability to sheep of fifteen cultivars of Trifolium repens and one cultivar one cultivar of Trifolium ambiguum were assessed in a field trial at Armidale, Australia (30°S). Preference was shown for the taller, larger leaved cultivars of white clover such as Lucky. Regal, Haifa, Aran, Olwen, and for Monaro Caucasian clover, when differences in leaf size and height were most accentuated. Dry matter consumption was a poor indicator of preference. Acceptability measures were not well-correlated with HCNp. Cyanide contents increased from January to April, but were considerably lower in July and November. Aran and Olwen had consistently the highest HCNp while Lucky, Regal and Monaro had the lowest HCNp. Sulphur contents were always high (> 2%) and varied only slightly between cultivars. Sheep preferred clover cultivars that were easiest lo harvest; these were large leaved, tall types. However, once the obvious differences in ease of harvesting were removed, sheep grazed opportunistically. Since HCNp had no effect on acceptability, breeders should aim for cultivars with moderate to low HCNp to retain pest protection but minimize goitrogenic potential. Caucasian clover exhibited a different growth pattern to white clover but its acceptability was similar.  相似文献

Adults of Sitona lineatus (pea leaf weevil, PLW) feed on foliage of several Fabaceae species but larvae prefer to feed on nodules of Pisum sativum L. and Vicia faba L. Indirectly, through their feeding on rhizobia, weevils can reduce soil and plant available nitrogen (N). However, initial soil N can reduce nodulation and damage by the weevil and reduce control requirements. Understanding these interactions is necessary to make integrated pest management recommendations for PLW. We conducted a greenhouse study to quantify nodulation, soil and plant N content, and nodule damage by weevil larvae in relation to soil N amendment with urea, thiamethoxam insecticide seed coating and crop stage. PLWs reduced the number of older tumescent (multilobed) nodules and thiamethoxam addition increased them regardless of other factors. Nitrogen amendment significantly increased soil available N (>99% nitrate) as expected and PLW presence was associated with significantly lower levels of soil N. PLW decreased plant N content at early flower and thiamethoxam increased it, particularly at late flower. The study illustrated the complexity of interactions that determine insect herbivory effects on plant and soil nutrition for invertebrates that feed on N-fixing root nodules. We conclude that effects of PLW on nodulation and subsequent effects on plant nitrogen are more pronounced during the early growth stages of the plant. This suggests the importance of timing of PLW infestation and may explain the lack of yield depression in relation to this pest observed in many field studies. Also, pea crops in soils with high levels of soil N are unlikely to be affected by this herbivore and should not require insecticide inputs.  相似文献

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) are among the most common legume species used for ruminant feeding systems. Besides the greater nutritive quality and first-year ley yield compared to lucerne, red clover decreases its yield over the years. However, under unfavourable soil conditions the persistency of lucerne can be compromised, not performing as expected. This study compared yield and chemical composition of eight lucerne cultivars and one tetraploid red clover cultivar, with similar growth capacity as lucerne, replicated over two years. In the second year, four lucerne cultivars and the red clover cultivar were analysed for crude protein (CP) fractions, dry matter and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility. A randomized block design was used with three field blocks per cultivar for the multiple comparisons within each year. There were differences in DM yield, concentrations of CP and NDF and CP fractions among the lucerne cultivars, but the differences were inconsistent between years and between growth cycles within year. The red clover cultivar had lower CP and NDF concentrations than a majority of the lucerne cultivars, and greater in vitro organic matter digestibility compared to all of the lucerne cultivars. Also, the red clover cultivar had greater rumen undegradable-to-degradable CP ratio but confirmed its lower yield persistency compared to the lucerne cultivars.  相似文献

In a four-year study, we investigated the relationship between the damage to root nodules of organically produced pea (Pisum sativum L.) by the larvae of the pea leaf weevil (Sitona lineatus L.) and the abundance of adult weevils. In addition to studying natural infestations, we established artificial infestations within cages to assess the impact of different weevil densities on yield parameters and determinants of the nitrogen balance. Densities of 0.2 adult S. lineatus per plant (20 individuals per m2) reduced the number of seeds and pods per plant by 18% and 15%, respectively; seeds per pod and thousand-seed weight remained unaffected. A three-fold or five-fold increase in weevil abundance (13–40 or 20 to 100 individuals per m2) did not result in an additional reduction in yield. Moreover, the higher weevil abundance did not adversely affect the N-harvest index or soil nitrogen content. We suspect that the impact of adult S. lineatus on yield and nitrogen parameters is limited by the density-dependent mortality of the larvae. Survival of larvae in turn depends on the nodulation of the plants, which is largely regulated by the supply of water. The assumption that organic cropping systems are at specific risk from the pea leaf weevil was confirmed by increasing population densities during the study period. However, yield losses were independent of adult attack within a wide range of weevil abundance, which indicates the complexity of assessing larval damage based on adult infestation level. An enhanced intraspecific competition among larvae may account for the absence of linear relationships, considering that especially young instars failed to establish in root nodules at higher densities. We found that adult densities of 0.2 individuals per plant and subsequent larval densities of 7 individuals per plant resulted in destruction of 37% of the root nodules on primary roots, which was much below destruction values reported in other studies. In conclusion, we recommend an early monitoring of weevils and early initiation of control strategies because yield losses were caused by even low weevil densities. Finally, the tolerance of P. sativum to S. lineatus was influenced by the yield level, i.e., tolerance to S. lineatus decreased as yield increased.  相似文献

Three white clover cultivars, S184 (small-leaved), Menna (medium-leaved) and Olwen (large-leaved), were sown at a seed rate of 3 kg ha-1 under spring wheat cv. Tonic. In the spring of the two following years, there were three pre-bud emergence mechanical defoliation treatments on which were superimposed four post-bud emergence treatments giving a total of twelve cutting treatments. Pre-bud emergence, plots were either cut twice (at approximately two weeks before bud emergence and at bud emergence), cut once at bud emergence or not cut. To each treatment were applied four post-bud emergence treatments: plots were not cut or cut once (one, two or three weeks after bud emergence). Counts of the total number of inflorescences and of the proportions in various ripeness categories were made throughout the period of seed crop development to determine the pattern of inflorescence development and optimum harvest date. Overall, inflorescence numbers were greatest in cv. S184and least in cv. Olwen. Defoliation before bud emergence had no effect on inflorescence production; however, it was significantly influenced by defoliation after bud emergence. Although delaying the initial development of the crop, inflorescence numbers of all cultivars were highest in both years following cuts two and three weeks after bud emergence. Optimum harvest date was not affected by defoliation or cultivar, numbers of ripe inflorescences in both years reaching a peak at the end of August. The number of brown inflorescences, which may also contribute to seed yield, reached a peak in both years in late July. Seasonal differences in inflorescence production were again observed, emphasizing the difference between first and second year crops and importance of climate in while clover seed production. The implications of these differences in numbers and proportions of inflorescences in various ripeness categories under different defoliation regimes are discussed in relation to seed crop management in the UK.  相似文献

Six red clover cultivars, three diploid—Essex, Sabtoron and Violetta—and three tetraploid— Teroba, Red Head and Hungaropoly—were sown alone and with each of three companion grasses—timothy (S48), tall fescue (S170) and perennial ryegrass (S24). The productivity and persistency of the red clover cultivars were compared over 4 years. Dry matter (DM) yield, DM digestibility and the crude protein (CP) concentration were assessed and botanical analyses conducted on herbage samples from each treatment at each of three harvests per annum. Annual fertilizer application consisted of 165 kg P and 312 kg K ha-1. Comparing clover cultivars alone Essex was significantly less productive and less persistent than the other five cultivars. Yield and persistency of the five other cultivars did not differ markedly within years with the exception that the diploids were significantly less productive than the tetraploids in the fourth year. Over all 4 years mean annual total DM and clover DM yields of the five cultivars were between 12·2 and 13·2 t ha-1 and between 9·2 (79·2% of total DM yield) and 10·2 (83·2%) t ha-1 respectively, and differences were not significant. Up to the end of the third year there was little or no advantage gained by the inclusion of a companion grass, annual total DM yields being between 11·2 and 14·2 t ha-1 for clover alone and between 10·2 and 14·2 t ha-1 for clover-grass mixtures. In the fourth year there was an overall tendency for the yield of the clover alone to be lower, between 7·2 and 12·2 t ha-1, than that of the clover-grass mixture, between 8·2 and 13·2 t ha-1, and this was more pronounced with the diploid than with the tetraploid clover cultivars. Sown with companion grasses, Essex and Hungaropoly were lower in yield and in contribution than the other cultivars over the 4 years. The influence of the companion grass on total dry matter yield showed that the contribution of timothy was low relative to that made by tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass made the most varied contribution from year to year. Tall fescue was the most consistent contributor with all clover cultivars and at the end of 4 years both yield and clover-grass balance had not changed materially. No pronounced differences in DM digestibility were evident between treatments. Crude protein concentration of the pure clover was similar to that of the clover-timothy treatments and both would appear to be superior to either the clover-perennial ryegrass or clover-tall fescue mixtures. It is considered that red clover dominant swards are suitable for use under a cutting regime and can provide high yields of DM at a low cost for up to 4 years. Such swards are self-sufficient in N and in addition soil N accumulation can be exploited in the production of succeeding crops.  相似文献

The hypothesis that dynamics of growth, branching of stolons and appearance of leaves are important for the persistence of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) in mixed swards was tested. The effect of cutting frequency and white clover cultivar on stolon and leaf dynamics was studied throughout the growing season in a field experiment. Mixtures of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) and white clover cultivars with different leaf sizes, cvs. Alice, Gwenda and Retor, were evaluated for white clover persistence at two cutting frequencies. Stolon dynamics, stolon survival, leaf and node appearance rate, branching, flowering and stolon elongation rate were analysed and related to white clover content and yield.
There were clear seasonal fluctuations in stolon and leaf characteristics. Stolon elongation rate and appearance rates of nodes, leaves and branches declined in autumn. Temperature and irradiation explained a major part of the variation of stolon elongation rate and leaf appearance rate and 25% of the variation in stolon branching rate.
Significant and consistent differences in yield and botanical composition were found between mixtures. Mixtures with cv. Alice had the highest total and white clover yield and the highest white clover content, whereas mixtures with cv. Retor had the lowest yield and the lowest white clover content. Stolon elongation rate and stolon internode length were significantly higher in cv. Alice than in the other white clover cultivars, whereas cv. Retor had a significantly higher percentage of leaves with damage caused by insects and slugs than the other cultivars. Little support was found for the hypothesis that branching characteristics are a key component of competitive success in mixed pasture, as most measured branching characteristics were not associated with differences in white clover yield between cultivars and cutting regimes.  相似文献

The hydrogen cyanide potential (HCNp) of 17 cultivars of white clover were compared. With inadequate phosphorus supply, HCNp ranged from 24 mg kg DM−1 for cv Lucky to approximately 640 mg kg DM−1 for cv Huia and from 6 to 322 mg kg DM−1 for the same cultivars, with adequate phosphorus. The annual contribution of clover to a mixed sward for 5 years was compared for a range of cultivars, viz. S1OO, Sabeda, Blanca and Olwen, in order of increasing leaf size. The contribution referred to as'clover-derived nitrogen N', was measured as the difference between N harvested in mixed swards and that in similarly treated swards devoid of clover. The swards were harvested four or five times each year and received N fertilizer, annually, at 0, 30, 60 or 90 kg N ha−1 in March.
Blanca swards had the highest clover-derived N yield in the second year and lowest in the fourth year. By the fifth year Sabeda and S100 (medium leaved cultivars) were contributing more N than the other two cultivars. When related to the amount of clover harvested, S100 had the highest value in the second year and S100 and Sabeda in the third year. Relating the total lover-derived N harvested over the 5 years to the amount of clover harvested, S100 had an efficiency of contribution of 54-3 kg N t−1 dry matter (DM) compared to a mean of 49 0 kg N t−1 clover DM for the other three cultivars. Nitrogen fertilizer reduced the contribution of clover N in the first 3 years owing to a reduction in clover yield, but it did not affect clover's efficiency to contribute N.
It is concluded that although the smallest leaved type of the four (S100) made the most efficient N contribution to the sward more information is required to relate morphology of clover to its capability to contribute N directly or indirectly to the sward.  相似文献

Persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixtures was studied in a long-term experiment. Mixtures of two cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) with contrasting growth habits and three white clover cultivars differing in leaf size were sown in 1991 and evaluated at two cutting frequencies. During 1995 and 1996 mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had the highest dry-matter (DM) content, clover and N yield, and the highest white clover content, and mixtures with medium-leaved Retor the lowest, whereas mixtures with small-leaved Gwenda yielded most grass DM. In 1995 averaged over cutting treatments and mixtures, the mixtures yielded 11·8 t DM ha?1 with a white clover content of 0·6; the apparent N fixation was 393 kg N ha?1. In 1996 these values declined to 8·5 t DM ha?1, 0·48 white clover and 236 kg N ha?1. There was no significant effect of cutting frequency on DM yield or white clover content, whereas the effects of grass cultivar were not consistent. In spring there was a peak in the DM production of the mixtures, coinciding with a peak in production of the grass component. However, in summer and autumn the seasonal pattern of DM production of the mixtures was similar to that of the white clover component. Both cultivars of perennial ryegrass showed the same seasonal response, but the seasonal growth pattern of white clover differed slightly between clover cultivars and cutting treatments. In later years only one cutting frequency was imposed, and no yield measurements were taken. White clover was judged to have performed well during 1997; the clover content in September was very high (0·76), whereas in October 1998 it was 0·45. Mixtures with Alice contained most white clover. Despite fluctuations in white clover content during 1991–98, all clover cultivars had persisted 7 years after sowing, irrespective of companion grass cultivar, at both cutting treatments.  相似文献

The effect of defoliation interval on growth patterns of contrasting perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures was studied. The dynamics of increase in leaf area, light interception and dry-matter (DM) production were measured within successive regrowth periods. No N fertilizer was applied. During 1995 six mixtures were cut eight (F1) or six times (F2) at a stubble height of 5 cm. The stubble composition was stable throughout the growing season: after harvest about 50 g DM m?2 (with a white clover proportion of 0·52) was present with a leaf area index (LAI) of 0·5 (0·38 white clover). The percentage of intercepted radiation after cutting was 20–30% and increased during 3 weeks to about 95%. The relative growth rate of leaf area and DM was higher for white clover than for perennial ryegrass, with the proportion of clover in the LAI and DM increasing during each regrowth period. Mixtures with large-leaved white clover cv. Alice had a lower initial clover content after harvest, but a more rapid increase in clover LAI and DM than mixtures with the smaller leaved cvs Gwenda or Retor. Alice had the highest total and clover LAI and DM at harvest. Cutting frequency affected the change in white clover–perennial ryegrass ratio during regrowth. This was significantly higher in mixtures with Alice than in mixtures with Gwenda, but only under less frequent cutting (F2). In spring there was a mean white clover proportion of about 0·55 in the LAI and 0·45 in the total harvested DM. In summer the white clover proportion in the LAI and DM increased to 0·70–0·75. There was a decline during autumn, especially in F2 and in the mixtures with the small-leaved white clover cv. Gwenda and the medium-leaved cv. Retor. In contrast, grass DM and LAI declined from spring to summer. The decline in clover LAI in autumn was similar in Alice and Gwenda at frequent cutting (F1), but stronger in Gwenda in F2. Retor had the lowest clover specific leaf area (SLA). The SLA values of Alice and Gwenda were similar, SLA being similar between cutting treatments. No differences were found for leaf weight ratio (LWR) among the three white clover cultivars or between the grass cultivars, and LWR was not affected by cutting treatment. Defoliation interval had limited effects on the growth pattern and leaf characteristics of perennial ryegrass–white clover mixtures.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out on seven sites in Fermanagh to investigate the yield loss caused by leatherjackets in grassland. Populations on the sites ranged from 65,000 to 865,000 ha−1 and significant damage was recorded from all sites except the least populated. Greater yield increases were obtained by controlling leatherjackets in September when compared with control in March. Regression models were fitted and it was found that 125,000 leatherjackets ha−1 in March caused a yield loss of 50 kg herbage dry matter (DM) ha−1 by mid-May. Based on these figures the average yield loss to leatherjackets in Northern Ireland, from 1965 to 1982, was 208 kg DM ha−1. Controlling leatherjackets in September, rather than March, increased the potential avoidable yield loss by a factor of 2.72. The average yield loss at first silage cut is therefore 566 kg DM ha−1. On average, 100,000 ha grassland in Northern Ireland may be suffering an annual loss of 1t herbage DM ha−1.  相似文献
