Growth and production in the first year, as additional selection criteria, were assessed for nine poplar clones to be used
as short rotation woody crops (SRWC) in the production of biomass for energy purposes. In order to identify the most promising
clones in terms of growth and yield and also to assess their stability, trials were established at different locations in
Spain. The majority of these clones, which form part of the European list of base materials, have frequently been used in
plantations aimed at timber production but not for biomass in Mediterranean conditions. Others, such as those selected in
Italy specifically for biomass production (currently provisionally admitted), are being tested for the first time under different
soil and climatic conditions in Southwest Europe. The early selection of clones for rapid juvenile growth provides a valuable
additional input to the clonal selection process, especially where very short rotations are desired (no more than 3 years).
In any case, determining clonal stability in terms of growth is of great use not only when deciding on the clones to be used
in plantations but also when developing breeding programs. ANOVA and Genotype plus Genotype × Environment (GGE) biplot analyses
were used to analyse the growth and stability of the clones, which were then ranked according to mean performance and stability.
Differences were detected between clones as well as between the different environments tested. The biplot analysis allowed
different groups of clones to be identified according to their performance and degree of interaction displayed, thus providing
useful information for the selection process. The production of aboveground biomass in the first vegetative period ranged
from 1.7 to 8.0 Mg DM ha−1 at the different sites. ‘Monviso’, ‘Guardi’, ‘AF2’ and ‘2000 verde’ were the most productive clones whereas ‘Unal’, ‘Pegaso’
and ‘USA 49-177’ were the least productive. The stability analysis identified ‘AF2’, ‘Guardi’, ‘I-214’ and ‘MC’ as more stable
clones while ‘Monviso’, ‘2000 verde’, ‘Unal’, ‘Pegaso’ and ‘USA 49-177’ were found to be specifically adapted to certain environments.
This implies that where information on site conditions is not available, the ‘AF2’ and ‘Guardi’ clones offer greater assurance
of successful establishment and higher initial growth. The growth of ‘Monviso’ ‘2000 verde’ ‘Unal’ ‘Pegaso’ and ‘USA 49-177’
clones is highly dependent on site conditions during the establishment phase. Similarly, the SH (Shore Henares river) and
LT (La Tallada) sites were identified as the most highly discriminative environments for the set of clones while CS (Cubo
de la Solana) and AR (Atarfe) were identified as those where performance levels were average. 相似文献

Twenty-five species and hybrids in Populus were used as parents, and 26 cross combinations, including more than 5 000 seedlings, were obtained by artificial cross breeding.
The length of infructescence, number of seeds per infructescence, thousand-seed weight, germination rate of seeds among these
cross combinations were tested. The results indicated that the cross combinational effects were significant for these traits,
and demonstrated that the length of infructescence, thousand-seed weight were positively affected by female parent. In addition,
seedling height, diameter above ground, diameter at breast height (DBH) of 17 cross combination progenies were investigated.
The analysis of mean and standard deviation of these three traits showed that seedling height, diameter above ground, DBH
had extensive variation among combinations and individuals within combination. Variance analysis and estimate of heritability
indicated that the three traits had wide variation and were controlled by heredity. It was feasible to select superior cross
combinations and seedlings. Further more, the result of multiple comparison showed that P. deltoides ‘Lux’ × P. deltoides ‘D324’, P. ussuriensis cl. ‘U4’ × P. deltoides ‘T66’, P. ussuriensis cl. ‘U4’ × P. deltoides ‘T26’, P. deltoides ‘Lux’ × P. ussuriensis cl. ‘U3’, (P. tomentosa × P. bolleana) × (P. alba × P. glandulosa), (P. alba × P. tomentosa) × (P. alba × P. glandulosa), and (P. alba × P. glandulosa ‘No. 2’) × P. tomentosa ‘Lumao 50’ were superior cross combinations with higher growth rate. Finally, 123 elite seedlings were selected for further
test.

Accurate identification of varieties (clones) and knowledge of their genetic relationships are essential for poplar breeding
and variety management. In this study, 21 elite poplar varieties of Tacamahaca and Aigeiros in China were fingerprinted using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Four AFLP primer pairs developed
generated totally 181 AFLP polymorphic fragments, and in particular, each primer pair generated fingerprint profiles specific
to each of the tested varieties. The genetic relationships among the varieties were evaluated by dendrograms and multidimensional
scaling (MDS). The results showed that the tested poplar can be classified into five groups, and indicated the clear separation
of varieties of different sections of poplar and the primary distinction between native and exotic poplar varieties. This
study indicated that tested poplar varieties could be identified by their fingerprint profiles and that genetic relationships
deduced from the study were consistent with their genealogy. In addition, our results demonstrated that AFLP could be used
to construct DNA fingerprints of polar clones at a large-scale level and to determine genetic relationships of poplar varieties.

An investigation was conducted to determine the extent of variations among nine provenances of Populus tomentosa Carr. in terms of leaf characteristics. A total of 263 accessions were studied under field conditions in the National Gene
Bank of P. tomentosa in 2003. All of the accessions were characterized by 17 indices from 1 to 2-dimension constructions. Variance analysis of
all characteristics showed that there were significant differences among the nine provenances and among individuals within
each provenance. This study reveals that the evaluated germplasm appears to have a wide genetic base and high potential for
further genetic improvements and it also indicates that abundant gene resources of P. tomentosa have been collected and preserved in the National Gene Bank.

Genome-wide search for segregation distortion loci associated with the expression of complex traits in Populus tomentosa 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Segregation distortion of molecular markers has been reported in a broad range of organisms. It has been detected in an interspecific BC1 Populus pedigree established by controlled crossing between clone “LM50” (Populus tomentosa) and its hybrid clone “TB01” (P. tomentosa×P. bolleana). The study with a total of 150 AFLP markers (approximately 18.9% of the total loci) exhibited significant deviation from the Mendelian ratio (1:1) (p<0.01). Twenty-five percent of the markers were mapped on the pa-rental specific genetic linkage maps of clones “LM50” and “TB01” with a pseudo-test-cross mapping strategy. Twelve linkage groups had markers with skewed segregation ratios, but the major regions were on linkage groups TLG2, TLG4 and TLG6 in the linkage map of clone “LM50”. We also analyzed the association between distorted loci and expression of complex traits with Map-maker/QTL software. A total of 16 putative QTLs affecting 12 traits were identified in the distorted regions on seven linkage groups. Therefore we could detect the distribution of skewed loci along the entire genome and identify the association between quantitative traits and segregation loci via genetic mapping in an interspecific BC1 P. tomentosa family. Furthermore, the genetic nature and pos-sible causes of these segregation distortions for differentiation between female and male parents were also discussed. 相似文献

Poplar is one of the dominant tree species for the establishment of fast growing plantations in Shandong Province.Eighteen poplar clones belonging to Populus aigeiros section were introduced from Italy, Turkey and domestic regions. Populus deltoides cv. ‘Lux‘ 1-69/55 (1-69), which was widely used in Shandong Province, China, was taken as control clone (1-69).Following a randomized complete block design, seedling test and controlled afforestation trials were carried out at Juxian County,Caoxian County and Laiyang City. The results showed that the poplar clone (Populus x euramericana cv. ‘102/74‘), namely 102/74, performed well both in terms of adaptability and growth rate. The mean height of 13.9 m (H), diameter at breast height of 18.0 cm (DBH) and volume growth of 0.1445 m3 (V) were 2.2 %, 21.6% and 52.9% higher than those of 1-69 (CK), respectively,at the age of 5 years at three experimental sites. Moreover, the clone can be propagated easily and showed high resistance to poplar disease, pest as well as salinity and had longer growing period. Furthermore, wood basic density and fiber length of new poplar clone (102/74) were as same as 1-69 (CK). It was concluded that the selected clone (102/74) was ideal for the estab-lishment of fast-growing poplar plantations, especially for the pulpwood plantations in Shandong Province. 相似文献

In order to discover which ectomycorrhizal-(ECM) fungi have better growth-promoting effects on poplars, cuttings from four
poplar species were inoculated with nine species of ECM fungi by three methods. We investigated the status of mycorrhizal
formation and the effects of these fungi on the growth of the poplars. The results show that Xrocomus chrysentero (Xc), Boletus edulis (Be), Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Laccaria amethystea (La) formed clear ectomycorrhizal symbiosis with the poplar seedlings. Among these four ECM fungi, Xc had the greatest ability
to develop mycorrhizae with all four poplar species. Be shows a greater ability to form mycorrhizae with Populus deltoides Bartr cv. ‘Lux’ (Poplar I-69). Pt and La had relatively weaker abilities of colonization. The other five ECM fungal species,
i.e., Scleroderma luteus (Sl), Leccinum scabrum (Ls), Boletus speciosus (Bs), Calvatia craniiformis (Cc) and Rhizopogen luteous (Rl) could not easily form mycorrhizae with poplar seedlings grown in sterilized substrates, but could do so in non-sterilized
soil. With the method of drilling and injecting liquid inoculum, a simple operation, the mycorrhizal infection rates were
higher than with the other two methods, applying solid inoculum as fertilizer at the bottom of the pots and dipping roots
in the inoculum slurry. P. simonii Carr. formed mycorrhizae with most of the nine ECM fungi. P. x euramericana (Dode) Guinier cv. ’san Martino’ (Poplar I-72) and P. deltoids Harvard x P. deltoids Lux (Poplar NL-351) had the highest compatibility with Pt. Poplar I-69 shows the highest compatibility with Xc. The study
indicates that the optimal ECM fungi for poplars I-69, I-72 and NL-351 were Be, Xc and Pt, respectively. The optimal fungi
for P. simonii Carr. were Xc and Be. These ECM fungi promoted the growth of the poplar seedlings significantly.

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used in genetic fingerprinting of 22 elite Chinese Populus deltoides and Populus × canadensis accessions. The results indicated that each of the nine AFLP primer pairs selected generated fingerprint profiles that were
unique to each of the accessions. Therefore, each accession was definitively identified by any of the nine primer pairs. Furthermore,
the inter-accession genetic relationships inferred based on 461 polymorphic fragments from the nine AFLP primer pairs were
largely consistent with phylogenetic relationships based on morphologic traits. Bootstrap analysis showed that three AFLP
primer pairs were required to obtain genetic similarity values with a maximum CV of 10% while 10 AFLP primer pairs could give
a maximum CV of 5%. Thus, AFLP can readily be applied for a rapid and accurate evaluation of the degree of similarity between
poplar cultivars. In this study, the number of AFLP fragments used was sufficient to establish a reliable estimate of genetic
similarity among accessions, with a maximum CV of 5.12%. Therefore, the information on the genetic relationships among the
poplar accessions generated in this study in connection with knowledge on agronomic traits may have an impact on poplar breeding

Horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis was used to study crude enzyme extraction from young leaves of 234 clones of Populus tomentosa Carr. selected from nine provenances in North China. Ten enzyme systems were resolved. One hundred and fifty-six clones showing
unusual allozyme band patterns at locus Mdh-1 were found. Three allozyme bands at locus Mdh-1 were 9:6:1 in concentration. Further studies on the electrophoretic patterns of ground mixed pollen extraction of 30 male
clones selected at random from the 156 clones were conducted and it was found that allozyme bands at locus Mdh-1 were composed of two dark-stained bands and a weak band. Only one group of the malate dehydrogenase (MDH) zymogram composed
of two bands was obtained from the electrophoretic segregation of pollen leachate of the same clones. A comparison of the
electrophoretic patterns one another suggested that the locus Mdh-1 coding malate dehydrogenase in diploid species of P. tomentosa was duplicated. The duplicate gene locus possessed three same alleles and was located in mitochondria. The locus duplication
of alleles coding malate dehydrogenase in P. tomentosa was discovered and reported for the first time.

The characteristics of root growth in the fast-growing and high-yield plantation of poplar I-214 (Populus × euramericana cv. ‘I-214’) were studied under two contrasting conditions, subsurface drip-irrigation (SDI) and normal irrigation (CK),
on the sandy soil of Chaobai River, Beijing. The results showed that in the soil layer of 20–50 cm, there was a considerable
increase in the amount of roots less than 10 mm in diameter (especially those of less than 2mm) under SDI, which was three
times as much as that under CK. The absorbing roots under SDI were concentrated in the soil layer of 20–50 cm, while the roots
under CK were distributed evenly in each layer. With respect to horizontal distribution, roots (d<10 mm) under SDI were distributed mainly near the subsurface emitters and the amount of roots in 3 m in a row under SDI were
50% less than under CK. Therefore, it is suggested that subsurface emitters with the shape of “#” should be collocated in
the middle of two rows and two individual trees to increase the distributing and absorbing range of roots under SDI, and further
increase the plantation productivity.

The role of agroforestry systems in biodiversity conservation was investigated in the semiarid Tehuacán Valley, Central México.
Richness and diversity of native plant species were compared between agroforestry systems (6 sampling sites) and the following
forests (6 sampling sites) dominated by columnar cacti: (i) “chichipera” dominated by Polaskia chichipe; (ii) “jiotillal” dominated by Escontria chiotilla; and (iii) “garambullal” dominated by Myrtillocactus schenckii. Our information on genetic variation of dominant arboreal species in the study sites was reviewed and included in the analysis.
Factors influencing household’s decisions to maintain vegetation cover were compiled through a survey and interviews and analyzed.
All the samples of the agroforestry systems studied maintained on average nearly 59% plant species and 94% genetic variation
of dominant cacti occurring in the forests, although their ability to preserve endemic rare species is limited. Social factors
favoring maintenance of perennial species in agricultural plots include collective rules, households traditions, use of the
plants maintained in the systems, and the environmental information gathered from NGOs, the local Biosphere Reserve, and researchers.
However, agroforestry systems are losing their capability to maintain vegetation cover, mainly because of (i) decreasing amount
of land managed by households, determined by a progressive fragmentation of the land area given to new families, (ii) adoption
of technologies to intensify agriculture, and (iii) governmental programs penalizing the presence of vegetation patches within
agricultural lands since they are considered “useless” areas. Necessary policies to stop degradation of the agroforestry systems
and to improve their conservation capacity are discussed. 相似文献

Populus deltoides (poplar) that is extensively being planted commercially in agroforestry combinations in northern India is prone to attack by a defoliating insect, Clostera cupreata. In order to evaluate the relative susceptibility/resistance of different clones and to identify the resistant ones, 80 clones of American origin were evaluated in Dehra Dun, India. The feeding potential of the pest on different clones varied significantly. The clones were grouped into six categories depending on their susceptibility as most resistant or R1 (12 clones), moderately resistant or R2 (14 clones), marginally resistant or R3 (10 clones), marginally susceptible or S1 (17 clones), moderately susceptible or S2 (18 clones) and most susceptible or S3 (nine clones). Clone 110120 of Tennessee was most resistant where as Oklahoma clone 104 was most susceptible to this pest. Amongst the most resistant clones (R1), only three clones, WSL-4, WSL-12 and WSL-18 (source: WIMCO Seedlings Ltd, India) were found to be superior, in terms of growth increment, as compared to the standard and most widely planted clones in northern India i.e. G-3 and G-48, and are promising clones for plantation in defoliator prone areas.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

Under artificially-simulated complex salt-alkali stress, the levels of active oxygen metabolism in roots were studied using three-year-old cutting seedlings of Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Mound’ and Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Flame’. The present study aimed at exploring the antioxidant capacity in roots of spiraeas and revealing their adaptability to salt-alkali stress. Results indicate that the oxygen free radicals contents, electrolyte leakage rates and MDA contents in roots of Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Mound’ and Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Flame’ show an increasing tendency with the increases of the salinity and pH value, whereas the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) all increased firstly and then decreased. With the increase in intensity of salt-alkali stress, the CAT activity in roots of Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Flame’ is higher and the increasing extents in the oxygen free radicals contents, electrolyte leakage rates as well as MDA contents are lower compared with Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Mound’, indicating that Spiraea × bumalda ’Gold Flame’ has a stronger antioxidant capacity. 相似文献

Small-scale forestry in Serbia is characterized by high fragmentation of properties, a large number of parcels and forest
owners. Numerous activities for private forest owners in Serbia supported by the State, FAO and CEPF have resulted in an increased
interest of owners in forming private forest owners’ associations (PFOA). The goal of this paper is to explore preconditions
that are necessary for organizing private forest owners in Serbia into effective associations. In order to reach this goal,
results of PRIFORT project were used. The over-arching research questions of this paper are: “What is the level of interest
among forest owners in forming owners’ associations?”; “Why has forest owner interest in organizing developed so slowly?”
and “What are the necessary preconditions for the development of private forest owners’ organizations in the country?” In
order to answer these questions, quantitative survey with 42 close, open and Likert scale questions was conducted. Sample
size was determined following Malhotra’s proportion method and, in total, 350 private forest owners, from nine municipalities
were interviewed. Results of this paper show that majority of respondents are very little or not at all aware of existing
legislation. Almost half of respondents consider that their interests are not represented well. Although about 50% of interviewed
forest owners miss interest organization, only 0,3% are members of PFOA. More than 70% are ready to join association, if it
would provide some economic advantages. 相似文献

Three-dimensional distribution of water in the heartwood of Cryptomeria japonica D. Don was observed by soft X-ray photography. The within-tree variation in the distribution of “wet areas” (water-accumulated
areas in heartwood) was enormous, as was the variation among trees. Although we found no universal pattern of changes in wet
area distributions along the stem axes of all trees, similarities among individual trees within each cultivar and clone were
observed. The difference between the two kinds of wetwood in C. japonica – genetically defined wetwood and secondarily induced wetwood – is discussed, as is the use of soft X-ray photography in Japanese
tree breeding programs.

This paper discusses a plantation management approach involving a combination of “short” and “long” rotations designed to
allow farmers to receive income from trees as soon as possible after establishment. We present results from two plots that
represent extreme conditions: (a) a seasonally waterlogged, non-saline site (Nahalal), and (b) a saline site (Ginnegar) located
in the Yizre’el Valley, Israel. Six improved seed sources, four of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and two of E. occidentalis, were examined. The local Israeli seed source of E. camaldulensis (HA) performed best at both sites. In Nahalal, the short rotation thinning of the slower growing (50%) plantation trees could
provide economic returns approximately five years after establishment. The calculated mean annual increment (MAI) of these
trees reached 12.2 t ha−1 year−1. The long rotation, or better performing half of the plantation trees, could be used as a source of sawn timber, providing
higher-value products. By nine years after establishment, the average DBH of the various seed sources reached 25.8 ± 1.9 cm.
The calculated MAI of the combined cutting rotations reached 48.3 t ha−1 year−1. Eucalyptus grown under the combined (short- and long-term) management approach at Nahalal was more profitable than many other non-irrigated
local crops. Eucalyptus production in Ginnegar would be less profitable than in Nahalal. However, an additional ecological benefit was provided by
the crop’s ability to lower the water table. When this contribution to regional drainage is taken into account, trees become
economically competitive with other non-irrigated field crops under saline conditions.

Natural durability of two plantation woods, Chinese fir and I-214 poplar, was investigated thoroughly by three testing methods,
namely an accelerated laboratory decay test, a fungus cellar test and a field test. After the decay test using Postia placenta and Trametes versicolor, Chinese fir and the I-214 poplar showed 34% and 69% of mass loss, respectively, indicating they should be classified as
slightly durable and non-durable wood. This conclusion was confirmed by the fungus cellar test and the field test. Like the
performance in the decay test, I-214 poplar showed no resistance to termites either in the laboratory or in the field, whereas
Chinese fir would be classified as moderately resistant.

Plant regeneration from 9 clones ofPopulus tremula representing diverse genotypes originated from Turkey, has been studied in different media, such as Murashige and Skoog’s
Medium (MS), Aspen Culture Medium (ACM) and Woody Plant Medium (WPM) with appropriate supplements of growth regulators. Regeneration
efficiency on WPM containing 1 mg/l zeatin using stem explantsin vitro, was higher than on MS and ACM. In this system, the time required for shoot regeneration was 2 weeks, which was shorter by
two weeks than that of previous reports. A strong genotype dependence was observed among the tested nine clones. The regeneration
system, we describe here, did not involve the callus phase and thus was less prone to somaclonal variation. When adventitious
microshoots were cultured on WPM supplemented with 0.5 mg/l or 2 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), root formation was obtained after 1 week of culture. Adaptation of regenerated plantletsin vivo was 100%. This system for micropropagation ofPopulus tremula is expected to be suitable for studies on transformation of genes involved in lignin biosynthesis via modification of lignin
content.

To explore the effects of plant hormones levels excreted by ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi on the growth of poplars, Populus × euramericana cv. NL-895 seedlings were inoculated with nine species of ECM fungi. We investigated the status of ectomycorrhizal formation
and the effects of these fungi on poplar growth, and using the HPLC method, we measured the contents of four kinds of plant
hormones, indole acetic acid (IAA), zeatin (Z), gibberellin (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in both the culture filtrate and
the mycelium of these fungi. The results showed that the effects of nine ECM fungi on the growth of poplar NL-895 varied.
The inoculated seedlings, whether or not obvious mycorrhizas were developed, grew better than those non-inoculated ones. All
nine ectomycorrhizal fungi excreted the four plant hormones, but at different levels. The hormone contents in culture filtrate
were higher than that in mycelium, which showed a definite relationship with poplar growth. Significantly, correlation analysis
suggested the height and stem diameter of the poplar were positively correlated with zeatin contents in the mycelium, and
were negatively correlated with the levels of ABA or IAA in the mycelium.
