Effect of sodium bicarbonate on racing Standardbreds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Twenty-two Standardbred horses in race training were used in a crossover experiment to determine the effect of oral sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) administration on performance and metabolic responses to a 1.6-km (1-mile) race. Horses were paired and one horse in each pair was treated with either NaHCO3 (300 mg/kg BW) or a placebo, 2.5 h before they raced against each other. Each horse was scheduled to compete in two races, approximately 1 wk apart, one on each treatment. Horses always raced in the same pairs. Fourteen horses successfully completed both races. Jugular blood samples were obtained 1.5 h after treatment (rest), immediately before racing, 5 min post-race and 15 min post-race. In six horses, blood samples also were obtained 30 min post-race. Race times averaged 1.1 s faster after NaHCO3 treatment (P less than .1). Sodium bicarbonate treatment also elevated blood pH (P less than .05). In the horses sampled 15 and 30 min post-race, blood lactate disappearance was faster with the NaHCO3 treatment (P less than .05). The NaHCO3 may delay the fatigue precipitated by i.m. acidosis. Because other factors may limit performance (musculoskeletal soundness, cardiovascular and respiratory ability), NaHCO3 would not be expected to enhance the performance of all horses. However, the effect of NaHCO3 on lactate clearance may have implications for all intensively worked horses; because lactate and the associated hydrogen ions are believed to cause muscle damage and soreness, any mechanism to increase their removal rate could benefit the equine athlete.  相似文献

Hypertonic NaHCO3 infusion caused blood volume expansion, increased blood bicarbonate concentration, and delayed the onset of hypophosphatemia in ponies with endotoxemia. However, NaHCO3 infusion did not normalize blood pH, and it increased blood L-lactate concentration, and caused hypokalemia, hypernatremia, and hyperosmolality. The deleterious effects of NaHCO3 infusion in endotoxemia ponies outweighed the beneficial effects. The role of hypertonic NaHCO3 given IV for treatment of endotoxemia in equids must be reevaluated.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine whether partial neutralization of estrogens via active immunization alters testosterone propionate (TP)-induced increases in FSH secretion after GnRH administration in ovariectomized pony mares. Twenty mares were used in a 2 X 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (n = 5/group). Factor 1 was long-term active immunization against either bovine serum albumin (BSA) or estrone-17-oxime-BSA. Factor 2 was 11-d administration of either vehicle (vegetable oil) or TP (175 micrograms/kg BW). Plasma concentrations of FSH were not affected (P greater than .1) by either factor. As expected, the FSH response to exogenous GnRH was threefold greater (P less than .05) in BSA-immunized mares treated with TP than in BSA-immunized mares receiving oil. However, immunization against estrogens reduced (P less than .05) this TP-induced increase in FSH response by 52%. Plasma concentrations of LH were decreased (P less than .08) by TP; this effect was not altered (P greater than .1) by immunization against estrogen. The LH response to exogenous GnRH was not affected (P greater than .1) by either factor. We conclude that aromatization of testosterone to estrogen is partially responsible for the increased FSH response to exogenous GnRH in TP-treated mares. In contrast, suppression of LH concentrations by TP appears to involve only the androgenic effect of TP.  相似文献

A technique was used to monitor continuously ruminal pH using a strip-chart recording pH meter. Ruminal pH measurements were made in four ruminal-cannulated crossbred wether lambs (ag initial weight, 42.5 kg). For l.5 h daily, lambs were given ad libitum access to 50% concentrate-50% chopped orchardgrass hay diets supplements with 0, l.5, 3.0 and 4.5% sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). A split-plot Latin-square design was used to evaluate NaHCO3 level and day of adaptation on the percentage of time (%T) that ruminal pH was less than 6.6, 6.2, 5.8, 5.4 and 5.0. No effect due to day of adaptation existed for ruminal pH measurements (P more than .10), while the effect of dietary NaHCO3 level was quadratic (P more than .01) for the %T that ruminal pH was less than 5.4. To evaluate the effects of NaHCO3 on nutrient digestion, the same diets were fed to eight wether lambs (avg initial weight, 38 kg) at 85% of their ad libitum intake in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin-square digestion trial. Digestibilities of dry matter (DM), organic matter, N and fiber fractions were not different due to level of NaHCO3 (P greater than .10). Ash digestibility increased with increasing levels of dietary NaHCO3 (P less than .01). Four ruminal-cannulated mature Hereford steers were also given ad libitum access to the diets in a split-plot Latin-square trial to evaluate effects of dietary NaHCO3 level on ruminal pH and in situ digestion of soybean meal N and orchardgrass DM. During incubation of the dacron bags for 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 36 h also increased linearly with increasing level of NaHCO3. Ruminal solid and liquid dilution rates were not affected by level of supplemental NaHCO3 (P greater than .10). The results of these trials suggest that increasing level of dietary NaHCO3 greatly increases the proportion of time ruminal pH is above critical levels for ruminal protein and dry matter digestion, but does not affect total tract nutrient digestion when 50% concentrate diets are fed.  相似文献

Blood acid-base and electrolyte status was studied in four sedentary Miniature Horses treated with 200, 300, 400 and 500 mg of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) per kg of body weight (BW). Arterial blood was collected before treatment with NaHC03 and each hour for 5 h after treatment. All treatments resulted in an increase in blood pH, bicarbonate (HCO3) concentration and base excess (BE) by 1 h post-dosage, which continued through the 5th hour (P < .05). Treatment with 200 mg NaHC03/kg BW resulted in less elevated blood HCO3 concentrations (P < .03) and BE values (P < .01) when compared to the other treatments. Following dosing with NaHCO3, plasma Na+ concentrations increased among all treatments but declined to initial values by 3 h post-treatment. The 200 mg NaHCO3/kg BW dosage resulted in the smallest increases in plasma Na+ concentrations (P < .03). Both plasma K+ and Ca++ concentrations were lower (P < .05) among all treatment groups 1 h post-dosage but returned to initial values by 5 h and 3 h posttreatment, respectively, with no differences (P >.05) among treatments. All NaHCO3 dosages increased blood buffering capacity as indicated by increased blood pH, HCO3 concentration and BE. Maximum blood pH, HCO3 concentration and BE was reached using a dosage of 300 mg NaHCO3/kg BW. Also, all treatments altered the plasma electrolyte concentrations.  相似文献

Effects of testosterone propionate (TP) treatment on plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) before and after an injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) were studied using ovariectomized cows and pony mares. An initial injection of GnRH (1 microgram/kg of body weight) was followed by either TP treatment or control injections for 10 (cows) or 11 (ponies) d. A second GnRH injection was administered 1 d after the last TP or oil injection. Concentrations of LH and FSH were determined in samples of plasma taken before and after each GnRH injection. Control injections did not alter the response to GnRH (area under curve) nor the pre-GnRH concentrations of LH and FSH in ovariectomized cows or ponies. Testosterone treatment increased (P less than .01) the FSH release in response to GnRH in ovariectomized mares by 4.9-fold; there was no effect in cows, even though average daily testosterone concentrations were 59% higher than in pony mares. Testosterone treatment reduced the LH release in response to GnRH by 26% in ovariectomized mares (P less than .05) and by 17% in ovariectomized cows (P approximately equal to .051). These results are consistent with a model that involves ovarian androgens in the regulation of FSH secretion in the estrous cycle of the mare, but do not support such a model in the cow.  相似文献

Four mares fed a low fiber, high soluble carbohydrate diet were used in a crossover design to evaluate the effects of dietary sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation during daily low-intensity submaximal working conditions. Mares were fed the diet at 1.7 times the maintenance energy requirement for mature horses at work. The horses tolerated the diet well and had no clinical abnormalities. Resting venous blood bicarbonate (HCO3), standard HCO3, and base excess (BE) concentrations significantly (P less than 0.05) increased with NaHCO3 supplementation, but no significant changes in resting venous blood pH or carbon dioxide tension (PCO2) were recorded. Venous blood HCO3, standard HCO3, BE, hemoglobin, and heart rate were significantly (P less than 0.05) increased and plasma lactate concentration was significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased in the control horses and in the horses given the NaHCO3 supplement during low-intensity submaximal exercise. There were no significant changes in venous blood pH, PCO2, or plasma protein concentration with exercise. Venous blood HCO3, standard HCO3, and BE concentrations were significantly (P less than 0.05) greater during submaximal exercise in horses given the NaHCO3 supplement. There were no significant differences in plasma lactate or total protein concentrations, blood pH, PCO2, or hemoglobin concentration between the 2 groups during exercise.  相似文献

1. A commercial 62-week-old layer flock experienced an acute drop in egg production and an increase in shell-less egg production within 2 days of consuming feed erroneously formulated to contain over 30 g/kg instead of 3 g/kg sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Other symptoms included increased water consumption, diarrhoea and increased mortality associated with visceral gout. 2. An experiment was conducted to assess the responses of hens under controlled conditions. Twenty Dekalb XL Single Comb White Leghorn hens (50 weeks old) were placed in individual cages, having ad libitum access to water from trough waterers. Ten hens were fed the TEST (High NaHCO3) feed for one week (Test group), and ten hens remained on normal commercial layer ration (Control group). 3. Hens in the Test group had high water consumption and watery droppings, but egg production and mortality were not affected. Physiological evaluations indicated the Test feed caused metabolic alkalosis. Plasma sodium, urine pH and urinary sodium excretion were increased, and glomerular filtration rates were decreased in the Test group. 4. These physiological effects are consistent with known responses to excess sodium intake in domestic fowl. The reduced egg production and increased mortality caused by the Test feed under commercial conditions may be related to more severe dehydration experienced by hens in multi-bird cages supplied by cup-type watering systems.  相似文献

Serum pepsinogen concentrations rose more rapidly and to higher levels in adult sheep infected with Ostertagia circumcincta and treated orally with the mast cell stabilising agent sodium cromoglycate than they did in adult sheep infected with the parasite which remained untreated. The effect of gentamicin sulfate, unbuffered and buffered with sodium bicarbonate, on synovial fluid and membrane of clinically normal equine joints was evaluated. Thirty-six adult horses with clinically normal antebrachiocarpal joints were allotted to 6 treatment groups of 6 horses each. One antebrachiocarpal joint in each horse was chosen for treatment. Group-1 horses were given gentamicin (3 ml; 50 mg/ml); group-2 horses were given sodium bicarbonate (3 ml; 1 mEq/ml); group-3 horses were given gentamicin (3 ml; 50 mg/ml) and sodium bicarbonate (3 ml; 1 mEq/ml); group-4 horses were not treated; and horses of groups 5 and 6 were given polyionic physiologic solution (3 and 6 ml, respectively). Synovial fluid specimens were obtained from 5 horses of each group for cytologic analysis at postinjection hours (PIH) 0, 24, 72, and 192 and for pH determination at PIH 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 4, 8, 24, 72, and 192. The sixth horse of each group was euthanatized at PIH 24, and the synovial membrane of the treated and contralateral (nontreated) antebrachiocarpal joints was examined macroscopically and microscopically. After intra-articular gentamicin administration, the mean synovial fluid pH was lowest (5.98) at PIH 0.25, but by PIH 8, it was not significantly different from the control value (group-5 horses). The effect of 1.35% isotonic sodium bicarbonate solution (ISB) administered intravenously on acid-base equilibrium was examined in 18 acidemic Japanese black beef calves with spontaneous diarrhea. The infusion volumes of ISB were decided based on the first half volumes of base needed. In 72.2% (13/18) of calves, improvement of acidemia was detected. There was good correlation (r=0.693, p<0.01) between infused volume of ISB and changes in base excess (y=1.097x + 4.762). Infusion volumes of ISB were 7.5, 10.2, 12.9 and 15.7 ml/kg, respectively, enough to correcting the first half of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mEq/l of base deficit in acidemic calves. Our finding suggested that ISB could be used to correct metabolic acidosis without altering electrolyte concentrations in calves.  相似文献

Changes in blood gases, pH, and plasma electrolyte concentrations in response to intravenously infused sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and sodium acetate (NaCH3CO2) solutions (1.34 mEq/mL) in 5 light breed mares were investigated. Jugular venous blood samples were collected before and after completion of the infusions in 20-minute intervals for 200 minutes. Infusion of sodium bicarbonate and sodium acetate caused significant (P < .00l) increases in blood pH and bicarbonate ion concentration that persisted throughout the collection period. The elevation in blood pH and bicarbonate ion concentrations was greater (P < .01) for sodium bicarbonate than for sodium acetate immediately after the completion of the infusions but was not different (P > .05) thereafter. There were significant reductions (P < .01) in plasma-ionized calcium and potassium after infusion of both sodium bicarbonate and sodium acetate. This study found that significant metabolic alkalosis in horses and corresponding shifts in electrolyte concentrations can be induced by intravenous infusion of solutions of either sodium bicarbonate or sodium acetate, and they persist for at least 3 hours. These data show that the short-term elevation in pH and bicarbonate ion concentration is momentarily higher after infusion of sodium bicarbonate. This is likely due to the direct infusion of bicarbonate ions in the sodium bicarbonate treatment, such that further metabolism is not required to be effective. However, the longer-term alkalosis did not differ between isomolar solutions of sodium bicarbonate and sodium acetate.  相似文献

Four crossbred barrows, weighing an average of 26 kg each, were fitted with simple T-cannulas in the terminal ileum and placed in metabolism cages to evaluate the effect of dietary supplements of NaHCO3 or KHCO3 on the short-term metabolism of sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and chloride (Cl). A control diet containing 2.8 g/kg Na and 4.1 g/kg K was compared with similar diets supplemented with either 13 g/kg or 26 g/kg NaHCO3 or 30 g/kg KHCO3. All diets contained 4 g/kg Cr2O3 as an external marker and were offered twice daily (1,100 g X pig-1 X d-1) in a 4 X 4 Latin square arrangement. Feces and total urine output were collected for 24 h on the fifth day after introducing a new diet; digesta was collected for 12-h periods on d 6 and 7. Sodium and K concentrations at the terminal ileum were unaffected by dietary treatment. Apparent ileal digestibility of Na was increased by NaHCO3 supplements. Over the total gastrointestinal tract, diet had no affect on apparent Na digestibility. Urinary Na clearance was increased by NaHCO3 in the diet in a dose-dependent manner. Net Na retention (g/d) was increased by NaHCO3. Apparent ileal digestibility of K was increased by KHCO3. Apparent fecal digestibility of K was increased by KHCO3 and NaHCO3. Urinary K clearance was elevated by KHCO3, but not enough to overcome the increased K intake; net K balance (g/d) rose in response to dietary KHCO3 supplements. The effects of single IV injections of sodium bicarbonate (0.5 mEq/kg of body weight, 1 mEq/kg, 2 mEq/kg, and 4 mEq/kg) on serum osmolality, serum sodium, chloride, and potassium concentrations, and venous blood gas tensions in 6 healthy cats were monitored for 180 minutes. Serum osmolality increased and remained significantly (P less than 0.05) increased for 120 minutes in cats given 4 mEq of sodium bicarbonate/kg. Serum sodium was increased significantly (P less than 0.05) for 30 minutes in cats given 4 mEq of sodium bicarbonate/kg. Serum sodium decreased and remained significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased for 120 minutes in cats given 1 g of 20% mannitol/kg, and serum osmolality was significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased at 30 and 60 minutes. Serum chloride decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) for 10 minutes in cats given 1 mEq of sodium bicarbonate/kg, and was significantly decreased for 30 minutes in cats given 2 mEq and 4 mEq of sodium bicarbonate/kg. Serum chloride decreased and remained significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased for 30 minutes in cats given 1 g of 20% mannitol/kg. Serum sodium and serum osmolality did not change significantly (P less than 0.05) in cats given 4 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride/kg. Serum potassium decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) for 10 minutes in cats given 1 mEq of sodium bicarbonate/kg, and for 120 minutes in cats given 2 mEq/kg or 4 mEq/kg. 选择体重、胎次、泌乳期、乳脂率和产奶量基本一致的健康无病的中国荷斯坦奶牛30头,随机分成3组,分别为试验组Ⅰ,Ⅱ和对照组。试验组Ⅰ,Ⅱ奶牛日粮每日每头分别添加130、150g碳酸氢钠,对照组奶牛日粮每日每头分别添加110g碳酸氢钠,试验期28d。结果表明,试验组Ⅰ干物质采食量、粪便pH比对照组高1.41%、0.20(P0.05),非脂乳固体比对照组低0.4(P0.05);试验组Ⅱ干物质采食量、产奶量、4%标准乳、粪便pH分别比对照组高2.04%、2.01%、2.68%、0.42(P0.05),乳脂率高0.13%(P0.05),乳蛋白、非乳脂固体分别低0.36%、0.51%(P0.05)。另外,碳酸氢钠的增加使得牛乳中体细胞数显著降低,且与乳脂肪呈显著负相关(P0.05),而与乳蛋白质呈显著正相关(P0.05)。由此可知,在每头奶牛日粮中添加150g碳酸氢钠的范围内,随着日粮中碳酸氢钠的增加,能显著改善荷斯坦奶牛的生产性能,有效预防奶牛瘤胃酸中毒。  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare abomasal emptying rates in calves after suckling milk replacer or 3 common orally administered electrolyte solution components. ANIMALS: 5 male calves < 35 days of age. PROCEDURES: Calves with a cannula fitted in the abomasal body were fed 2 L of milk replacer with or without parenteral administration of atropine (0.01 mg/kg, i.v., then 0.02 mg/ kg, s.c., q 30 min) or isotonic (150 mM) solutions of sodium acetate, NaHCO(3), or NaCl in a randomized crossover design. Abomasal emptying rates were determined via scintigraphy, acetaminophen absorption, ultrasonography, and change in abomasal luminal pH. RESULTS: Scintigraphic half-emptying time, time of maximal plasma acetaminophen concentration, ultrasonographic half-emptying time, and pH return time indicated similar abomasal emptying rates following suckling of isotonic sodium acetate, NaHCO(3), and NaCl solutions, whereas the emptying rate of milk replacer was significantly slower. Mean maximal abomasal luminal pH was highest following suckling of NaHCO(3) (pH(max)=7.85) and lowest following suckling of NaCl (pH(max)=4.52); sodium acetate (pH(max)=6.59) and milk replacer (pH(max)=5.84) yielded intermediate pH values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Isotonic solutions of sodium acetate, NaHCO(3), and NaCl were rapidly emptied from the abomasum but varied markedly in their ability to alkalinize the abomasum. Sodium bicarbonate-containing orally administered electrolyte solution might increase the frequency of infection or severity of clinical disease in diarrheic calves treated for dehydration by causing prolonged abomasal alkalinization.  相似文献
