From Nov 22, 1983 through May 15, 1984, 36 crossbred steers were allotted into 3 treatment groups (12/group) and were grazed on separate 3.4-hectare pastures. On Nov 22, 1983, the steers were administered a single morantel sustained-release bolus (MSRB), orally (group 1), or a single dose of thiabendazole (TBZ; 66 mg/kg of body weight, orally; group 2), or were left untreated (group 3; controls). Animal weights, nematode egg counts in fecal specimens, and plasma pepsinogen concentrations were monitored monthly. At the termination of the study, 4 steers from each treatment group were slaughtered and necropsied and worm counts were determined. A set of parasite-free tracer calves (3/treatment group) were grazed with each treatment group for 1 month, beginning on Nov 22, 1983; a second set of tracer calves (3/group) were grazed with each treatment group for 1 month, beginning Apr 3, 1984. At the end of their respective grazing periods, tracer calves were held for 3 weeks and then were slaughtered and necropsied and their worm counts were determined. Mean nematode egg counts in fecal specimens of group 1 (MSRB treated) were significantly lower (P less than 0.05) than that of the TBZ-treated or nontreated steers. Differences in worm counts were not found between treatment groups. Differences in worm counts of tracer calves were not found among the 3 groups for November 1983 nor for April 1984. Steers treated with the MSRB had a higher mean weight gain (P less than 0.06) than did the control or TBZ-treated steers.  相似文献

The effects of grazing and supplemental protein concentrations, provided during the grazing period, on subsequent finishing performance and carcass quality were investigated. This experiment was carried out using 15 Japanese Black cattle (Wagyu) steers. The steers were fed as follows: (i) grazing supplemented with moderate protein concentrate (GMP) (18% crude protein (CP); dry matter (DM) basis) before finishing, followed by feeding in a barn until slaughter; (ii) grazing supplemented with low protein concentrate (GLP) (14% CP; DM basis) before finishing, followed by feeding in the barn until slaughter; and (iii) no grazing before finishing (NG). From the end of the grazing season to the end of the growing period, the GMP and GLP steers were managed in the same way as the NG steers. All of the animals were fed the same diet in the finishing period (9 months to 28 months). None of the three treatments affected the average daily gains. For all treatments, chilled carcass weights were more than 450 kg and did not differ significantly among the groups. The longissimus muscle areas in the grazed steers were numerically larger than in those receiving the NG treatment. Fat thickness was significantly greater (P < 0.05) in the NG steers than in the grazed steers. The intramuscular fat and marbling scores were not affected in the grazed steers. In conclusion, the carcass quality of grazed steers was similar to that of the NG steers at a similar final age, and the quantity of meat in the NG steers would be less than that of the GMP and GLP steers. Therefore, spring‐born Wagyu steers should be grazed using the GLP supplement before fattening.  相似文献

To evaluate effects of previous forage systems on feedlot performance, yearling Hereford steers (average initial weight of 249 kg) were grazed on tall fescue (TF), smooth bromegrass-red clover (BG-RC) or orchardgrass-red clover (OG-RC) pastures before finishing. Serial slaughter was utilized during the first 2 yr of this study to determine changes in carcass characteristics throughout finishing, while steers were slaughtered at approximately 29% body fat during the third year. Steers grazing TF entered the feedlot at lighter weights and maintained lighter weights throughout finishing (P less than .05) even though dry matter intakes and feed conversions were similar (P greater than .05) among treatments. Steers that previously grazed TF had less (P less than .05) body fat, body protein, fat thickness and marbling, smaller (P less than .05) ribeye areas and lower (P less than .05) USDA yield and quality grades than than those that grazed BG-RC and OG-RC. However, linear contrasts indicated that steers grazing TF were compensating in ribeye area, marbling and quality grade as days in feedlot increased. This was confirmed in the third-year study, since carcass characteristics were similar among all steers. During the third year, linear and quadratic contrasts indicated that steers that grazed TF partially compensated in body protein. As days in feedlot increased, live and hot carcass weights, body fat, fat thickness, kidney, pelvic and heart fat, marbling, and USDA yield and quality grades increased (P less than .05), while ribeye area and body protein plateaued. Although carcass characteristics were similar among treatments, steers backgrounded on TF entered the feedlot at lighter weights, and partially compensated in weight after 134 d of finishing.  相似文献

Live weight gains of light and heavy calves grazing Plains Old World bluestem at three stocking rates were evaluated during the summers of 1997 and 1998. Initial weights of mixed-breed light-weight steers (LHT) were 141 SD = 17 kg (n = 214) in 1997 and 160 SD = 23 kg (n = 193) in 1998. Initial weights of mixed-breed heavy steers (HWT) were 265 SD = 17 kg (n = 115) in 1997 and 248 SD = 13 kg (n = 126) in 1998. Initial stocking rates for both sizes of steers were as follows: light, 392 kg of live weight/ha; moderate, 504 kg of live weight/ha (increased to 616 kg live weight/ha in 1998); and heavy, 840 kg of live weight/ ha. Averaged gain and gain/hectare are reported as stocking rate by steer type within year. Heavy steers had greater ADG than LHT steers during both years. Forage intake, expressed as a percentage of BW, was greater (P = 0.05) for LHT (3.1%) than for HWT (2.8%) calves. Grazing time (min/d; 1998 only) was greater (P = 0.05) for LHT (665) than for HWT (624) steers. Forage CP and in vivo digestible organic matter (DOM) were slightly greater (P < 0.05) in pastures grazed by HWT vs LHT cattle. Gain/hectare was greater (P < 0.05) for LHT than for HWT calves at all three stocking rates during both years. A linear decline in ADG was observed (P < 0.07) as stocking rates increased for HWT steers in 1997 and LHT steers in 1998. However, ADG did not decline with increasing stocking rate for LHT calves during 1997 or HWT calves during 1998. Forage intake was not different among stocking rates in either 1997 or 1998. Grazing time was greatest (P < 0.05) for steers in the moderate and heavy stocking rates. Forage in vivo DOM decreased (P < 0.05) as stocking rate increased. Both LHT and HWT steers had lower (P < 0.05) ADG at all three stocking rates during 1998 compared with 1997. Despite lower ADG, LHT steers had greater gain/hectare than HWT steers during both 1997 and 1998.  相似文献

Studies were conducted during the summer of 2 successive years (1971 and 1972) to determine the effects of gastrointestinal nematode parasitism on performance failure of stocker beef steers grazed at high stocking rates on Coastal bermudagrass pastures. During each of the 2 years, 3 groups of steers were rotated at 7- to 10-day intervals on sets of three 1.63-ha pastures from mid-May to late October. (Each group was maintained on a given set of pastures.) In the 1971 program, from mid-May to early August (phase 1) each group consisted of 48 steers for a stocking rate of 29.6 steers/ha. From early August to late October (phase 2) the number of steers per group was reduced to 36 (stocking rate of 22.2 steers/ha) to improve the plane of nutrition. In the 1972 program, 2 groups were stocked at 48 steers per group (29.6 steers/ha) and a 3rd group was temporarily stocked with 58 steers (10 additional steers) to provide 2 animals each month for necropsy evaluation of worm burdens. With exception of the monthly removal of 2 steers from the 3rd group, the stocking rate in 1972 remained intact for the entire grazing season. In 1971, the 3 groups (groups 1, 2, and 3) were treated with thiabendazole (2 doses, 16 days between doses) before grazing. Parasite burdens and levels of pasture contamination were low initially and body weight gains were good during the 1st 3 months of grazing (phase 1). In the 2nd half (phase 2) of the grazing program, 1 group of steers given free-choice supplemental feed (1% of body weight/steer each day) and treated with anthelmintic (thiabendazole; 2 doses, 18 days between doses, during August) and another group, given supplemental feed only, had significantly better weight gains than did the 3rd group, not given supplemental feed nor treated with anthelmintic. There was no weight gain advantage derived from the reduced stocking rate in phase 2. Tracer calves, which were allowed to graze on pastures, developed an increased level of infection after August. Fecal egg counts in the principal steers and recovery of infective larvae from pasture paralleled the infection level in tracer calves. Necropsy evaluation of steers from groups 1, 2, and 3 at the end of the 1971 program indicated a similarity in total worm counts, but in the group not given supplemental feed nor treated with anthelmintic there was more generalized inflammation and a greater number of lesions in the abomasum (Ostertagia) and the caudal portion of the intestine (Oesophagostomum). Steers in the 3rd group also were in poorer condition. Initial worm burdens in the 3 steer groups (groups 4, 5, and 6) were low at the start of the 1972 program. One group was given freechoice supplemental feed (0.5% of body weight/steer each day) and treated with anthelmintics (thiabendazole in the 1st dose, levamisole in the 2nd dose, 12 days between doses, in May and August) and another group was given supplemental feed throughout the summer; the 3rd group was treated with anthelmintics (in May and August)...  相似文献

The efficacy of a morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) for control of gastrointestinal nematodes in yearling steers was evaluated over a 6-month grazing period commencing on 26 March 1982. Three groups of 15 steers were allotted to the following treatments: Group 1 -- one MSRB at start of trial; Group 2 -- one therapeutic dose of thiabendazole at start of trial; Group 3 -- untreated control. The treatment groups were grazed separately. Parasite egg counts (EPG), herbage larval counts, pepsinogen levels and weight gains were monitored. Every other month, sets of 2 parasite-free tracer calves were placed in the pasture grazed by each treatment group and allowed to graze for 3 weeks before being subsequently necropsied for worm counts. At the end of the trial, 6 animals from each group were also necropsied for worm counts. The MSRB treatment resulted in significantly lower egg counts, fewer infective larvae on pasture, lower pepsinogen levels and lower worm burdens in tracer calves than was the case for the untreated group, but generally the levels were not significantly different from those associated with the thiabendazole treatment. The mean weight gain for the MSRB treated steers showed a significant advantage (70.9 lb) over the untreated animals, but was not significantly different from those which received thiabendazole. Total worm counts at the end of the trial were not different from any treatment group.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine monthly changes in body condition scores, body weights and on the prevalence of internal parasites in Nguni, Bonsmara and Angus steers raised on sweetveld. Body condition scores (BCS), body weights (BW), packed cell volume (PCV) and monthly faecal egg counts (FEC) were determined in 25 Nguni, 15 Bonsmara and 15 Angus steers. Nguni and Bonsmara steers maintained their body condition throughout the study, while the Angus lost condition. The Nguni had the highest PCV levels. The PCV levels tended to decline during the rainy season for all the breeds. The FEC were generally low. Fasciola spp. and strongyle eggs were found in 16.3 and 54.6% of the collected faecal samples, respectively. Of the three breeds, Nguni steers had the lowest parasite infestation levels, with the Bonsmara being more susceptible than the other two breeds. Generally, the egg counts observed throughout the study were low.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a pour-on solution containing moxidectin plus triclabendazole (MOX plus TCBZ) against immature and adult stages of the liver fluke in cattle and compare the efficacy with other commercially available preparations. To this end, 104 male Holstein-Friesian calves aged between 3 and 4 months, were randomly allocated to 13 groups of eight animals each, and infected with approximately 500 Fasciola hepatica metacercariae. One group remained untreated, four groups were treated with MOX plus TCBZ at a dose rate of 0.1mL/kg, four other groups were treated with ivermectin (IVM) plus clorsulon injectable at a dose rate of 0.02mL/kg, and the remaining four groups were treated with IVM plus closantel pour-on at a dose rate of 0.1mL/kg. Each treatment was applied to one of the groups at 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks after the experimental infection. At necropsy (99-102 days after infection), all untreated animals were infected with a minimum of 30 flukes. The MOX plus TCBZ treated animals had significantly (P<0.0001) lower fluke counts compared to the untreated control animals at all time points after treatment. Efficacy against 8-week old and adult flukes was >99.5%. For 6-week old immature fluke, the efficacy was 98.0% and for 4-week old immature fluke the efficacy was 90.9%. The IVM plus closantel pour-on treated animals had significantly lower fluke counts compared to the untreated control animals for adult and 8-week old flukes (P<0.0001), and for 6-week old flukes (P=0.002). The efficacy was 26.8%, 68.2%, 90.6% and 99.3% against 4-week, 6-week and 8-week old immature flukes, and adult flukes respectively. The IVM plus clorsulon treated animals had significantly lower fluke counts compared to the untreated control animals for adult (P<0.0001) and 8-week old (P<0.05) flukes. The efficacy was 29.7%, 43.4%, 53.2% and 99.2% against 4-week, 6-week and 8-week old immature flukes, and adult flukes respectively. For treatments at 4, 6 and 8 weeks after infection, the fluke counts were significantly (P<0.0001) lower for the MOX plus TCBZ treatment than for IVM plus closantel or IVM plus clorsulon. The results confirm the high efficacy (>90%) of the MOX plus TCBZ pour-on combination against 4-week old to adult liver fluke in cattle. The IVM plus closantel pour-on combination was effective (>90%) against 8-week old and adult flukes, but had low efficacy against 4- and 6-week old fluke. The IVM plus clorsulon injectable combination was effective (>90%) against adult fluke only.  相似文献

Over three consecutive years, 180 (60/yr) fall-born steer calves were weaned in May (average initial BW = 238 kg, SD = 36.2 kg) and allocated to one of three groups: 1) calf-fed steers that entered the feedlot at weaning; 2) short yearlings that grazed irrigated pasture for another 4 mo and entered the feedlot in September; and 3) long yearlings that grazed with short yearlings during the summer, remained on annual California foothills range through the fall, winter, and spring, and entered the feedlot the following May. All steers were fed until the average group backfat (BF), determined by ultrasound, reached 11 to 12 mm. On pasture, short- and long-yearling steers gained weight in the summer; long yearlings then slightly lost weight in the fall and winter, and then gained weight again the following spring. Average days in the feedlot were 188, 158, and 94 (P < 0.10) for calves, short yearlings, and long yearlings, respectively. Feedlot DMI increased with age (and weight) at feedlot entry, with no difference among groups in gain:feed ratio. The gain of BF was nil on pasture, even when animals were gaining weight, and then increased rapidly when animals were placed on a high-energy diet. Final body weights were heaviest (P < 0.10) in long yearlings, followed by short yearlings and then calves, indicating that a prolonged growing period increases the apparent mature size of the animal. Moreover, total carcass fat contents and percentage of Choice or above were all lower (P < 0.10) in cattle that were older at feedlot entry (i.e., long yearlings) compared with the other groups. In conclusion, increasing the backgrounding period decreased time and total concentrate requirements in the feedlot of Angus-Hereford steers. Older cattle reached 10 mm of BF at heavier weights. Grazing animals gained weight without increasing BF; however, BF increased rapidly in the feedlot. Prolonged grazing may decrease quality grade, either by impairing the ability of the animal to deposit intramuscular fat or by decreasing the time during which dietary energy supply is adequate for intramuscular fat deposition to occur.  相似文献

Three grazing experiments were conducted to determine the effect of level of endophyte infection, rate of N fertilization of tall fescue grass, grazing period, and paddock exchange on selected chemical properties of four bovine carcass tissues. Samples of semitendinosus and longissimus muscle and of subcutaneous and perinephric adipose tissue were excised from the left side of each carcass. In Exp. 1, percentage of stearic acid was higher (P less than .05) and percentages of palmitoleic and oleic acid were lower (P less than .05) in all tissues from steers grazed on LELN Au-Triumph fescue than in tissues from steers grazed on LELN KY-31 fescue. Grazing periods of 175 or 245 d or paddock exchange (Exp. 2) had no significant effect on proximate composition of semitendinosus and longissimus muscles; however, moisture content was higher (P less than .05) in the semitendinosus muscle from steers grazed on 100% (100E) endophyte-infected KY-31 fescue. Forage treatment, grazing period, and paddock exchange (Exp. 2 and 3) had no significant effect on percentage of saturated fatty acids in the subcutaneous, semitendinosus, and longissimus tissue samples. In Exp. 2 and 3, percentages of saturated fatty acids were higher (P less than .05) in subcutaneous and perinephric adipose tissue samples from steers grazed on 100E than in samples from steers grazed on zero endophyte (OE) fescue.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A 2-yr study was conducted to confirm that managed pastures can provide Holstein steers adequate P to meet their daily requirement. Treatments offered were trace mineralized salt with or without additional P. In the first year, 80 Holstein steers (248 kg of BW) were assigned to 4 grazing groups. Treatments were trace mineralized salt only or a 67:33 mixture of trace mineralized salt and dicalcium phosphate. Steers rotationally grazed a cool-season grass/legume mixture for 137 d. Fecal bags were placed on 3 steers from each grazing group (n = 12) over a 4-d period for estimation of forage DMI and forage contribution to daily P intake twice during the grazing season. Analyzed pasture samples contained 3.28 mg of P/g of DM. During the second year, 72 Holstein steers (297 kg of BW) were blocked into 2 BW groups and subsequently assigned to 1 of 4 pasture groups. Steers rotationally grazed the same forage base as the first year for 126 d. Pasture samples contained 3.27 mg of P/g of DM. No significant differences (P > 0.10) were detected for BW, ADG, or free-choice supplemental mineral intake. Forage provided 126% of the recommended NRC P requirement. Thus, supplemental phosphorous was not required for Holstein steers grazing mixed, cool-season, grass/legume pastures.  相似文献

Two groups of 10 parasite-free calves were maintained either for 2 weeks on a pasture grazed by nonmedicated cattle (pasture A) or for 3 weeks on a pasture grazed by morantel sustained-release bolus-treated cattle (pasture B) for the preceding 2 years. After a 4-week holding period to allow for maturation of acquired gastrointestinal nematodes, 5 calves from each group were administered a therapeutic dose (10 mg/kg of body weight) of morantel tartrate. All calves were necropsied 1 week later, and the abomasal and small intestinal nematodes were isolated, identified, and enumerated. A comparison of efficacies between nonmedicated and morantel tartrate-treated calves of each pasture demonstrated that morantel was equally effective against the gastrointestinal nematode infections, regardless of infection source (ie, pasture A vs pasture B). The overall nematode reductions due to morantel tartrate treatment of calves that grazed pastures A and B were 98% and 96%, respectively. It was concluded that the sensitivity of gastrointestinal nematodes to morantel tartrate was not diminished in calves maintained on pasture B, which had been stocked with morantel sustained-release bolus-treated calves for the preceding 2 grazing seasons.  相似文献

The effect of previous pasture management and ivermectin treatment on gastrointestinal parasitism, weight gain and carcase composition of steers was studied in the semiarid Pampeana region of Argentina from April 1986 to April 1987. Three groups, each of 15 weaned calves, were grazed on separate lucerne pastures. Group 1 control calves, which grazed paddocks previously grazed by nematode-infected weaners and yearlings with a high nematode egg output, were only medicated when heavy parasitism was recorded. Group 2 calves, which grazed paddocks previously infected by steers at least two and a half years old with low nematode egg output, were treated strategically with ivermectin. Group 3 calves, which grazed on 'clean' paddocks, were treated monthly with ivermectin. Group 1 calves showed heavy parasitism and parasitological parameters were higher than in groups 2 and 3. The liveweight gain responses of groups 2 and 3 were significantly greater than those of group 1 (P less than 0.001) during autumn, winter and early spring. At the end of the study when cattle reached market condition, the liveweight gains of groups 2 and 3 were 74.1 and 81.9 kg, respectively, greater than group 1. Carcase analyses showed significantly greater weight and killing-out percentages in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1. Reduced total bone, muscle and fat weights were observed in group 1.  相似文献

In 2004, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of biological control through feeding spores of Duddingtonia flagrans on parasitic gastroenteritis in lambs, kept under an evasive grazing system. In total 66 lambs were used. Forty naturally infected 3-month old ram lambs were weaned in mid June, and divided into four groups of 10 lambs. On 21 June, G1–G4 were moved to four separate virtually clean plots, they were moved after 4 and 8 weeks to similar plots, and housed after 12 weeks to be necropsied 16 days later. The other 26 lambs had been raised helminth-free, and were used as pairs of tracer lambs. All but one of these pairs, were grazed during the last 2 weeks on each plot. The remaining pair (TA) was grazed during the last 2 weeks on pasture (30 August to 13 September) on the plot that had been grazed by G3 between 19 July and 16 August, to study inhibited development in Haemonchus contortus. All lambs were fed 200 g of concentrates daily throughout the whole period, and those of G1 and G2 were also fed 500,000 spores of D. flagrans/kg bodyweight daily.

The faecal cultures demonstrated a high reduction in yield as a result of fungal application. However, no differences between groups were seen in weight gain, faecal egg counts, pasture larval counts, worm counts and tracer worm counts. H. contortus was the dominant species, and it is obvious that the moves at 4-week intervals prevented the development of severe haemonchosis. This is in particular demonstrated by the much higher worm counts in the two TA tracer lambs grazed. Nevertheless, increases to high faecal egg counts 3 weeks after the first and second moves, indicated acquisition of infection before these moves and at least subclinical haemonchosis. This was supported with the worm counts of lambs and tracer lambs. A higher proportion of inhibited early L4 than in other tracers and than in the permanent lambs were found in the pair of TA tracer lambs. This indicates that moves to new pastures in late summer and autumn delays the onset of inhibition.  相似文献

A 23 factorial design was used to examine the following treatments on the finishing of steers fed diets of 90% sorghum grain and 10% roughage: cottonseed hulls v. lucerne as the roughage component; nil v. 3% tallow; free-choice supplements of (a) sodium chloride, (b) 50/50 mixture of sodium chloride and rock phosphate, and (c) soil; a decrease in the crude protein level of the diet from 14 to 11% after body weight exceeded 350 kg.
Nine groups, each of 10 Shorthorn steers aged between 12 and 15 months, of an initial mean shrunk liveweight of 215.8 ± SE 0.35 kg were used. Individual steers were slaughtered either at 390 kg liveweight or after 177 days.
The mean growth rate was significantly higher in steers receiving cottonseed hulls than in those fed lucerne (1.27 v. 1.13 kg/day) and was significantly higher in those receiving tallow treatments than in those without tallow (1.28 v. 1.12 kg/day). Steers receiving 14% crude protein throughout showed an increased rate of carcase weight gain of 0.059 kg/day compared with steers receiving 11% from 350 kg body weight. The supplements had no effect on performance.
The overall mean carcase weight gain and dressing percentage were 0.68 kg/day and 59.0%, respectively.
Feed conversion (dry matter) was lower in steers receiving tallow than in those not receiving tallow (5.3 v. 6.3).
Steers fed lucerne exhibited intermittent mild to moderate bloat which did not require treatment.  相似文献

A 3-yr experiment was conducted with cows and their calves to evaluate resource inputs, animal performance, and carcass characteristics of two production systems. In the control system, cows (CON; n = 99/yr) grazed pasture and were fed hay during the winter, and CON steer calves were finished in the feedlot for 211 d after weaning. In the treatment system (TRT; n = 100/yr), cows grazed pasture and crop residue during the winter and were fed hay. Treatment steer calves grazed crop residue after weaning, grazed pasture in the spring and summer, and were finished in the feedlot for 90 d. Body condition scores after TRT cows returned from crop residue grazing were greater (P < 0.01) for CON than for TRT cows. Calving rates were similar for both groups (CON = 91%; TRT = 93%). In the feedlot, CON steers had lower (P < 0.05) ADG and DMI, but were more efficient (P < 0.01) than TRT steers. Treatment steers had greater (P < 0.05) final weight, hot carcass weight and longissimus muscle area, and decreased marbling score. The cost per weaned calf and weaning breakeven were greater (P = 0.07) for the CON system than for the TRT system (CON = 455.12 dollars, 0.91 dollar/0.45 kg; TRT = 421.43 dollars, 0.84 dollar/0.45 kg). When steers were priced into the postweaning phase on an economic basis, slaughter breakeven was lower (P = 0.01), and profit potential tended (P = 0.14) to be greater for TRT steers when they were sold on a live basis. When steers were priced into the postweaning phase on a financial basis, slaughter breakeven was lower (P = 0.03) and profit potential from the sale of steers on a live basis was greater (P = 0.07) for TRT than for CON steers. Economic evaluation of the total system resulted in greater (P = 0.06) profit potential for the TRT system when steers were priced into the system on either an economic or a financial basis and when steers were sold on a live basis, but no differences were observed when steers were sold on a grid basis. Despite differences in cow weight and body condition, calving rates did not differ between systems. Although calves were herdmates, feedlot performance and carcass characteristics differed between systems. The TRT system had lower weaning and slaughter breakeven, lower cost per weaned calf, and greater profit potential when finished steers were sold on a live basis.  相似文献

A 168-day study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of morantel tartrate sustained-release bolus (MSRB) in controlling gastrointestinal parasitism in weaned calves during autumn-winter grazing in the temperature climate of southern United States. Sixty-two weanling Angus heifers were used to assess treatment differences. Six sentinel heifers were necropsied to assess pretrial gastrointestinal worm counts. The remaining 56 heifers were assigned to 4 groups of 14 heifers each and were placed on four 4.86-hectare dormant Bermuda grass pastures (1 group/pasture) that had been no-till interseeded with cereal rye in early October. Heifers in 2 groups were given 1 MSRB in early November; the other 2 groups served as nonmedicated controls. Three heifers (principals) from each of the 4 groups were necropsied on posttreatment days 57, 112, and 168 (end of study) for total worm recovery. Eight 5-month-old tracer steers, raised worm-free from birth, grazed the 4 pastures (2/pastures) for the first 21 days of the study and then were kept in drylot for 21 days before being necropsied. Level of larval contamination of pastures grazed by control and MSRB-treated heifers were comparable, because the mean number of nematodes recovered from tracer steers grazing the control and MSRB pastures were 47,449 and 53,835, respectively. At 28 days after treatment, MSRB-treated heifers had lower (P less than 0.05) mean egg counts/g of feces than did control heifers (280 vs 13).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study was carried out to establish whether cattle can develop resistance to re-infection by Calicophoron microbothrium by assessing the response of intestinal mucosal globule leukocytes, eosinophils, mast cells and basophils, and the establishment of the parasite in the host. A total of 24 1-year-old Tuli steers were randomly divided into four groups of six animals each and infected with C. microbothrium metacercariae. On the first day of the study, animals in Groups I and II were immunized with 5000 metacercariae and then challenged with 15,000 metacercariae on Day 150 post-immunization. Animals in Group III were immunized with 15,000 metacercariae at the same time that Groups I and II animals were challenged to act as a positive control group. Animals in Group IV were left uninfected and acted as a negative control group. Three animals from each group were slaughtered on Day 28 post-challenge and the remainder were slaughtered on Day 42 post-challenge. The established amphistomes were recovered and histopathological and cytological examinations were done on the jejunum, duodenum, abomasum and the rumen. The establishment rates of the challenge infection in the immunized and challenged groups were lower and ranged from 0 to 0.2% as compared to 6% from naive animals infected as positive controls. Animals immunized and then challenged with C. microbothrium had significantly higher eosinophil, mast cell and globule leukocytes counts in the intestinal mucosa (P < 0.05) as compared to those of the control group. The study indicates that cattle can develop resistance to C. microbothrium re-infection and that eosinophils and mast cells may be important cells in the rejection of the parasite.  相似文献

Thirty, 4-month-old entire Santa Ines lambs were grazed on an Andropogon gayanus pasture, during a 34-week period (rainy season weeks 0-20 and dry season weeks 21-34) and allocated in two treatment groups (n = 15) each with different protein supplementation: high protein (HP-19% CP) and low protein (LP-11% CP). These were subdivided into those receiving anthelmintic treatment (c) (n = 7) and without anthelmintic treatment (i) (n = 8). The objective was to evaluate the effects of supplementation with protein on resistance and resilience to natural helminth infection of hair breed lambs. Lamb weight, blood collection and faecal egg counts (FEC) were carried out monthly. The lambs were slaughtered after 34 weeks, when worm burdens, worm length and eosinophil cell counts were taken. The sheep on treatments HPc and HPi were heavier in live weight than those from LPi and LPc (P < 0.05) at the end of the rainy period. The HPc group finished heavier (P < 0.05) than the other groups in the dry season, which had no significant differences between them. The predominant species of nematode found was T. colubriformis followed by H. contortus, Trichuris globulosa and Moniezia expansa. Animals on HPi had lower FEC than LPi (P < 0.05). The number of worms was lower for both HP groups (P < 0.05) with worm length shorter in the HPc group (P < 0.05) compared with all other groups. The number of eosinophils was higher in animals in the LPi group, which also showed anaemia and lower plasma urea at the end of the dry season. Diet supplementation with high protein was able to improve resilience and resistance to natural infection by endoparasites during the rainy season. In the dry season there was a decrease in both of these traits, which were intimately linked to the quality of available forage under tropical conditions.  相似文献

Information on the initial and final weights, length of feeding period, grade of the live animal before slaughter, carcass weight and dressing percentage of 2,498 stall fed Malawi zebu (MZ) and crossbred steers from Southern Region and 2,085 steers from the Central Region of Malawi is analysed. Agricultural and household residues were the basis of the feeding system. The genetic composition of individual animals was not known; weight groups were therefore used as proxies for breed types. Final weights were significantly influenced by breed, month and year when the feeding period was started and breed by month interactions. The mean stall feeding period in the South was 188 days and the average daily gain was 0.59 kg. Steers in the Central Region were fed for 213 days and gained on average 0.50 kg per day. Breed did not exert a significant effect on weight gain. However, when daily gain was compared on the basis of metabolic body size, MZ i.e. smaller steers gained significantly more rapidly than crossbred steers. The dressing percentage of animals from both regions was 52.3%. The carcass weight of crossbred steers was higher than that of MZ steers. It is concluded that an effective fattening system can be based on locally available resources and a similar system could be suitable for other parts of the developing world.  相似文献
