A 10-year-old spayed female mixed-breed cat presented with progressive nonregenerative anemia. Clinicopathological abnormalities included severe nonregenerative anemia (packed cell volume [PCV]: 7%, aggregate reticulocytes: 1.12 × 103/µl) and a hypoechogenic mass well-localized in the stomach. Bone marrow (BM) smears revealed increased particle hematopoietic cellularity with decreased myeloid:erythroid (M:E) ratios, no dysplasia of any lineage, and presence of erythroid precursors phagocytized by macrophages. The cat was diagnosed with presumptive precursor-targeted immune-mediated anemia (PIMA). The stomach mass was consistent with CD 20 positive T-cell lymphoma. The lymphoma was completely resected via surgery, and the PIMA was cured by immunosuppressive therapy. On day 410, both diseases have not recurred without medications. This is the first report of feline PIMA and concurrent gastrointestinal lymphoma.  相似文献

An approximately 683-g intact adult male pet rat (Rattus norvegicus) of unknown age was presented to the veterinarian by its owner with a complaint of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination findings consisted of an enlarged abdomen and a large cranial abdominal mass strongly suggestive of neoplasia. Because of a poor prognosis, the owner refused additional diagnostic tests and the rat was euthanized. A necropsy was performed, and the findings consisted of a large, irregularly shaped mass that replaced a large portion of the liver. Multiple metastases were present on the peritoneal surfaces of other abdominal organs. Cestode larvae consistent with Taenia taeniaeformis were within cystic cavities in the center of the hepatic mass and in the remaining liver tissue. The clinical and postmortem gross and microscopic findings were consistent with metastatic hepatic sarcoma induced by T taeniaeformis.  相似文献

A nine year old domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Small Animal Clinic, Ontario Veterinary College, with anorexia, depression and blindness. The animal died despite treatment. At necropsy, a space occupying mass was located in the left cerebral hemisphere. Histopathologically, the mass consisted of large numbers of fungal yeast-phase cells with an associated pyogranulomatous inflammatory response. The organisms were identified as Blastomyces dermatitidis on the basis of morphology and staining characteristics.

The purpose of this article is to describe the lesions of blastomycosis in the brain of a cat.

A cachexic 2-year-old koi (Cyprinus carpio) presented with progressive distension of the coelom (1-month period) and anorexia of 2 days' duration. The fish had been maintaining a normal swimming position, although it was often observed low in the water column. Water quality was within normal limits. A skin scrape, fin clip, and gill clip were unremarkable. The respiration rate (opercular movement) was elevated at 100 breaths per minute. Blood chemistry values demonstrated a hypoalbuminemia (1.3 g/dL), elevated uric acid (1.3 mg/dL), elevated creatine kinase (>14,000 U/L), and hyperkalemia (3.9 mmol/L). Ultrasound revealed a fluid-filled coelom and a soft tissue mass containing large vessels filling most of the coelomic cavity. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass were nondiagnostic, though a poorly exfoliating mesenchymal tumor was suspected. The mass was surgically excised. Pathological examination of the mass revealed it to be a poorly demarcated and unencapsulated neoplasm forming 3 histological patterns in which a spindle cell stromal component predominated over an intermediate-sized blastema and much smaller tubular patterns. These features were most consistent with a nephroblastoma. The koi survived 5 days postoperatively but remained low in the water column and was found dead on day 6. A full necropsy of this patient was not performed.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare induction targets, and the haemodynamic and respiratory effects, of propofol, or as an admixture with two different concentrations of alfentanil, delivered via a propofol target-controlled infusion (TCI) system.Study designProspective blinded randomized clinical study.Animals Sixty client-owned dogs scheduled for elective surgery under general anaesthesia. Mean body mass (SD) 28.5 kg (8.7) and mean age (SD) 3.5 years (2.4).MethodsDogs received pre-anaesthetic medication of acepromazine (0.03 mg kg−1) and morphine (0.2 mg kg−1) administered intramuscularly. Animals were randomly assigned to receive one of three induction protocols: propofol alone (group 1), a propofol/alfentanil (11.9 μg mL−1) admixture (group 2), or a propofol/alfentanil (23.8 μg mL−1) admixture (group 3), via a TCI system. Blood target concentrations were increased until endotracheal intubation was achieved, and induction targets were recorded. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (fr) and non-invasive arterial blood pressure were recorded pre-induction, at endotracheal intubation (time 0) and at 3 and 5 minutes post-intubation (times 3 and 5, respectively). Data were analysed using anova for normally distributed data or Kruskal–Wallis test, with significance assumed at p < 0.05.ResultsThere were no significant differences between groups with respect to age, body mass, HR, fr, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The blood propofol targets to achieve endotracheal intubation were significantly higher in group 1 compared with groups 2 and 3. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was significantly higher in group 1 at time 0 when compared with groups 2 and 3.Conclusions and clinical relevanceInduction of anaesthesia with a TCI system can be achieved at lower blood propofol targets when using a propofol/alfentanil admixture compared with using propofol alone. However, despite reduced targets with both propofol/alfentanil admixture groups, MAP was lower immediately following endotracheal intubation than when using propofol alone.  相似文献

A 6-year-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) exhibiting clinical signs of weakness, anorexia, lethargy, weight loss, and frequent urination was presented for a veterinary evaluation to determine the underlying cause of the aforementioned abnormal behavior and clinical condition. Physical examination revealed a large, firm, painless, movable subcutaneous mass at the base of the tail. Radiographic and ultrasound images confirmed the presence of a soft tissue mass compressing the sacrococcygeal vertebrae, but there was no evidence of metastatic lesions. Because of the poor prognosis and progressive deterioration of the animal's clinical condition, the ferret was humanely euthanized. Gross necropsy revealed a 4 × 4 × 3.5 cm, firm, yellow-tan, ovoid, subcutaneous mass wrapped around the rectum and the anus. The mass did not appear to breach the serosa. Evaluation of the abdominal cavity revealed a pale yellow liver, possibly associated with hepatic lipidosis with no gross evidence of metastasis in the body cavity. The histopathological features of the mass were consistent with a liposarcoma. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of subcutaneous liposarcoma reported in a ferret.  相似文献

A 15-y-old castrated male Maine Coon cat was evaluated for an ulcerated soft tissue mass on the right hindlimb that had been observed for 4 mo and had grown rapidly. A 3 × 3 cm soft, raised, amorphous, and ulcerated subcutaneous mass was observed on the lateral right metatarsus. In-house cytology via fine-needle aspiration was nondiagnostic. Incisional biopsy of the mass and further staging was declined, and amputation was elected. The amputated limb was submitted for histopathology, which revealed severe chronic nodular granulomatous dermatitis and multifocal granulomatous popliteal lymphadenitis with large numbers of intralesional fungal hyphae. Fungal PCR and sequencing on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue identified Chalastospora gossypii. No adjunctive therapy was elected at the time. The patient has done well clinically 1 y post-operatively. C. gossypii is a rare microfungus found worldwide and is considered a minor pathogen of several plants. To our knowledge, infection by this fungus has not been reported previously in veterinary species. Features in our case are comparable to other mycotic infections. Nodular granulomatous mycotic dermatitis and cellulitis, although uncommon, should be a differential for soft tissue masses in veterinary species; C. gossypii is a novel isolate.  相似文献

The complete coding sequence of Haemonchus (H.) contortus HC29 cDNA was generated by rapid amplification of cDNA ends in combination with PCR using primers targeting the 5''- and 3''-ends of the partial mRNA sequence. The cloned HC29 cDNA was shown to be 1,113 bp in size with an open reading frame of 507 bp, encoding a protein of 168 amino acid with a calculated molecular mass of 18.9 kDa. Amino acid sequence analysis revealed that the cloned HC29 cDNA contained the conserved catalytic triad and dimer interface of selenium-independent glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Alignment of the predicted amino acid sequences demonstrated that the protein shared 44.7~80.4% similarity with GPX homologues in the thioredoxin-like family. Phylogenetic analysis revealed close evolutionary proximity of the GPX sequence to the counterpart sequences. These results suggest that HC29 cDNA is a GPX, a member of the thioredoxin-like family. Alignment of the nucleic acid and amino acid sequences of HC29 with those of the reported selenium-independent GPX of H. contortus showed that HC29 contained different types of spliced leader sequences as well as dimer interface sites, although the active sites of both were identical. Enzymatic analysis of recombinant prokaryotic HC29 protein showed activity for the hydrolysis of H2O2. These findings indicate that HC29 is a selenium-independent GPX of H. contortus.  相似文献

A 7-year-old female Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) at the Seoul Grand Park, Korea, died after displaying depression, anorexia, weight loss and rough skin for several days. At necropsy, a solitary friable round mass, which was approximately 12 × 9 × 5 cm and mottled dark red and yellow, was found bulging from the right hepatic lobe. Microscopically, the nonencapsulated, poorly circumscribed mass was composed of solid sheets of neoplastic hepatocytes. In addition, numerous small tan foci, ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 cm in diameter, were evenly scattered throughout the pancreatic tissue. These foci were found to be nonencapsulated, well-demarcated hyperplastic nodules of the exocrine pancreatic gland. We observed neither intrahepatic nor extrahepatic metastases. Based on the gross and microscopic changes, we diagnosed the animal as having a hepatocellular adenoma accompanied by exocrine pancreatic nodular hyperplasia.  相似文献

A 4 1/2-year-old female spayed ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for a rapidly growing mass in the inguinal region. Following a complete clinical evaluation, the unusual mass was surgically removed and the histopathological diagnosis was an inguinal liposarcoma. ObjectiveTo establish a safe, reliable and reversible immobilization protocol for captive juvenile crocodiles.Study designProspective, randomized, clinical study.AnimalsThirty male estuarine crocodiles (body mass 1–12.1 kg) and 10 male Australian freshwater crocodiles (body mass 4.1–12.8 kg).MethodsAn optimized dose of medetomidine (0.5 mg kg?1) was administered intramuscularly (IM) into the tail (Group 1; n = 5), pelvic limb (Group 2; n = 5) and thoracic limb (Groups 3 and 4; n = 5 in each group) of estuarine crocodiles weighing 3–12.1 kg. Their heart and respiratory rates and degree of immobilization were monitored every 15 minutes until recovery and daily thereafter for 3 subsequent days. In Group 4 (n = 5), medetomidine was antagonized with an optimized dose of atipamezole (2.5 mg kg?1) given IM into the thoracic limb and time to recovery recorded. The effects of increasing doses of medetomidine given IM in the thoracic limb (n = 4) and intravenously (n = 6) were determined in 1–2 kg estuarine crocodiles. Australian freshwater crocodiles (4.1–12.8 kg) were administered medetomidine IM into the thoracic limb in divided doses at 0.5 mg kg?1 (n = 5) and 0.75 mg kg?1 (n = 5) and similarly monitored.ResultsImmobilization was achieved only in the estuarine crocodiles >3 kg and when medetomidine was administered into the thoracic limb. Immobilization was achieved within 30 minutes and the duration of immobilization lasted approximately 90 minutes. Immobilization in estuarine crocodiles was readily reversed with atipamezole. A dose of 0.75 mg kg?1 was required to immobilize Australian freshwater crocodiles and the onset of immobilization was longer and the duration shorter than seen in the estuarine crocodiles. The heart and respiratory rates of all immobilized animals decreased significantly and arterial blood pressure became undetectable in the animals in which it was measured.Conclusions and clinical relevanceMedetomidine administered in the thoracic limb of captive estuarine and Australian freshwater crocodiles, ranging from 3 to 12.8 kg, provides a predictable onset and duration of immobilization sufficient for physical examination, sample collection, short minor procedures and translocation of the animals. Atipamezole administered in the thoracic limb results in complete reversal of the effects of medetomidine in the estuarine crocodile and a rapid return to normal behaviour.  相似文献

Two hundred eight 20-wk-old Hy-Line W36 hens at a 5% production rate were assigned to 2 dietary treatments varying in CP content. Each treatment consisted of 13 replicates of 8 hens. Dietary CP levels of the control diet were 17.8, 19.9, 18.5, and 15.5% during the periods of 1) a 5 to 50% production rate, 2) a 50% production rate until mo 7, 3) mo 8 to 10 of the production cycle, and 4) mo 10 to 12 of the production cycle, respectively. The respective CP levels of the reduced-CP diet fed during these phases were 16.3, 18.4, 17.0, and 13.9%. The reduced-CP diets had dietary CP levels approximately 1.5 percentage units lower than their control counterparts. Dietary treatments met the minimal requirements for amino acids recommended by NRC (1994). Hen-day egg production, egg mass, and FCR were maintained well on the low-protein diet during the first 8 mo of production but tended to be impaired thereafter. In mo 10 and 11 of the laying period, egg mass was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced and FCR was significantly (P < 0.05) impaired on the reduced-CP diet compared with the control diet. Egg weight, eggshell thickness, eggshell breaking strength, and albumen height were not significantly affected by feeding the reduced-CP diet. In conclusion, layer performance can remain satisfactory on reduced-CP diets for short periods, but long-term feeding of reduced-CP diets may not be advisable because it will reduce performance in the late stage of production.  相似文献

A 7-y-old backyard Leghorn chicken (Gallus domesticus) was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS)–Turlock branch for postmortem examination, with a history of unexpected death. At postmortem examination, a hemorrhagic soft tissue mass was observed in the cervical region. Microscopically, a densely cellular neoplasm of polygonal epithelial cells and small lymphocytes was observed. The microscopic features of the neoplasm in combination with positive immunohistochemistry for pancytokeratin and CD3 were used to classify the lesion as a thymoma. Thymoma was diagnosed in only 5 birds submitted to CAHFS from 1990 to 2019. Thymoma has been described only rarely in birds, and is an unusual diagnosis in backyard chickens.  相似文献

The sensitivity of some porcine and bovine mycoplasmas to potent antimicrobial agents was examined. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were estimated for M. hyosynoviae, M. hyopneumoniae, M. dispar and M. bovis against enrofloxacin, lincomycin, tetracycline, tiamulin and tylosin, in a liquid medium test and in a disc assay. All 6 examined strains of each species and the respective type strains were significantly inhibited. The greatest sensitivity was noted for tiamulin against strains of M. hyosynoviae with a final MIC50 broth value of 0.025 µg ml−1 and disc value of 0.03 µg per disc. Enrofloxacin was found very potent against M. hyopneumoniae with a final MIC50 of 0.025 µg ml−1 and 0.1 µg per disc, and for M. dispar with 0.05 µg ml−1 and 0.03 µg per disc.Most disc assay estimates in ug per disc were similar to or moderately greater than corresponding final broth figures in µg ml−1. It may be possible to convert observed disc assay values into representative final broth MIC values for use in the clinic.  相似文献

A 9-year-old spayed female cat was examined for cheek skin drainage. The skin lesion did not respond to medical therapy; thereafter, facial deformity developed. A computed tomography revealed an intranasal mass and maxillary osteolysis. The mass was histopathologically diagnosed as suppurative granulomatous inflammation caused by filamentous bacteria. The lesion responded well to radiation therapy. Although actinomycosis was suspected histopathologically, no actinomycetes were detected in the nasal lesion by a bacterial culture conducted at a commercial laboratory. The submandibular lymph node and subcutaneous tissue exhibited swelling. Microbiological examination and genetic analysis based on 16S rDNA gene sequence revealed that Nocardia spp. were isolated from both lesions.  相似文献

Freezing of fox carcasses to minimize professional hazard of infection with Echinococcus multilocularis is recommended in endemic areas, but this could influence the detection of Trichinella larvae in the same host species. A method based on artificial digestion of frozen fox muscle, combined with larva isolation by a sequential sieving method (SSM), was validated using naturally infected foxes from Latvia. The validated SSM was used to detect dead Trichinella muscle larvae (ML) in frozen muscle samples of 369 red foxes from the Netherlands, of which one fox was positive (0.067 larvae per gram). This result was compared with historical Trichinella findings in Dutch red foxes. Molecular analysis using 5S PCR showed that both T. britovi and T. nativa were present in the Latvian foxes, without mixed infections. Of 96 non-frozen T. britovi ML, 94% was successfully sequenced, whereas this was the case for only 8.3% of 72 frozen T. britovi ML. The single Trichinella sp. larva that was recovered from the positive Dutch fox did not yield PCR product, probably due to severe freeze-damage. In conclusion, the SSM presented in this study is a fast and effective method to detect dead Trichinella larvae in frozen meat. We showed that the Trichinella prevalence in Dutch red fox was 0.27% (95% CI 0.065-1.5%), in contrast to 3.9% in the same study area fifteen years ago. Moreover, this study demonstrated that the efficacy of 5S PCR for identification of Trichinella britovi single larvae from frozen meat is not more than 8.3%.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine if body condition score (BCS) influences the sedative effect of intramuscular (IM) premedication or the dose of intravenous (IV) propofol required to achieve endotracheal intubation in dogs.Study designProspective clinical study.AnimalsForty–six client–owned dogs undergoing general anaesthesia.MethodsDogs were allocated to groups according to their BCS (BCS, 1 [emaciated] to 9 [obese]): Normal–weight Group (NG, n = 25) if BCS 4–5 or Over–weight Group (OG, n = 21) if BCS over 6. Dogs were scored for sedation prior to IM injection of medetomidine (5 μg kg?1) and butorphanol (0.2 mg kg?1) and twenty minutes later anaesthesia was induced by a slow infusion of propofol at 1.5 mg kg?1 minute?1 until endotracheal intubation could be achieved. The total dose of propofol administered was recorded. Data were tested for normality then analyzed using Student t–tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, chi–square tests or linear regression as appropriate.ResultsMean ( ± SD) propofol requirement in NG was 2.24 ± 0.53 mg kg?1 and in OG was 1.83 ± 0.36 mg kg?1. The difference between the groups was statistically significant (p = 0.005). The degree of sedation was not different between the groups (p = 0.7). Post–induction apnoea occurred in 11 of 25 animals in the NG and three of 21 in OG (p = 0.052).ConclusionsOverweight dogs required a lower IV propofol dose per kg of total body mass to allow tracheal intubation than did normal body condition score animals suggesting that IV anaesthetic doses should be calculated according to lean body mass. The lower dose per kg of total body mass may have resulted in less post–induction apnoea in overweight/obese dogs. The effect of IM premedication was not significantly affected by the BCS.Clinical relevanceInduction of general anaesthesia with propofol in overweight dogs may be expected at lower doses than normal–weight animals.  相似文献
