Psorospermium haeckeli is a thick-walled, unicellular organism widely reported in European astacid crayfish. Its taxonomic status and life cycle have not been elucidated. It is often referred to as a “parasite”, but conclusive evidence has yet to be found. Recent examination of two North American crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii and Procambarus zonangulus, confirmed its presence in the south-central USA (Louisiana) with morphologies that differ from that of P. haeckeli. This form had been previously reported from Orconectes virilis in southern Canada. We report here the presence of this North American form of Psorospermium in additional North American crayfish including Orconectes immunis and Orconectes rusticus from the northern USA (Minnesota and Wisconsin), Procambarus alleni and Procambarus fallax from the southern USA (Florida), and Pacifastacus leniusculus from the western USA. We also confirm this Psorospermium in O. rusticus from eastern Canada (Ontario). It was not, however, confirmed in several additional southern crayfish species including Cambarus diogenes, Cambarellus puer, Fallicambarus fodiens, and Orconectes palmeri. We describe the morphological forms of this Psorospermium and conclude that it is present in many crayfish species in North America.  相似文献

  1. Juvenile Pacific salmon exhibit diverse habitat use and migration strategies to navigate high environmental variability and predation risk during freshwater residency. Increasingly, urbanization and climate-driven hydrological alterations are affecting the availability and quality of aquatic habitats in salmon catchments. Thus, conservation of freshwater habitat integrity has emerged as an important challenge in supporting salmon life-history diversity as a buffer against continuing ecosystem changes.
  2. To inform catchment management for salmon, information on the distribution and movement dynamics of juvenile fish throughout the annual seasonal cycle is needed. A number of studies have assessed the ecology of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) during summer and autumn seasons; catchment use by this species throughout the annual cycle is less well characterized, particularly in high-latitude systems.
  3. Here, n = 3,792 tagged juvenile coho salmon were tracked throughout two complete annual cycles to assess basin-wide distribution and movement behaviour of this species in a subarctic, ice-bearing catchment.
  4. Juvenile coho salmon in the Big Lake basin, Alaska, exhibited multiple habitat use and movement strategies across seasons; however, summer rearing in lotic mainstem environments followed by migration to lentic overwinter habitats was identified as a prominent behaviour, with two-thirds of tracked fish migrating en masse to concentrate in a small subset of upper catchment lakes for the winter. In contrast, the most significant tributary overwintering site (8% of tracked fish) occurred below a culvert and dam, blocking juvenile fish passage to a headwater lake, indicating that these fish may have been restricted from reaching preferred lentic overwinter habitats.
  5. These findings emphasize the importance of maintaining aquatic connectivity to lentic habitats as a conservation priority for coho salmon during freshwater residency.

Interstitial water conditions in the hyporheic zone of the stream bed are determinants of salmonid egg hatching success. We used standardised egg exposures to develop and validate discriminant analysis and generalised linear model models linking the hatching success of brown trout (Salmo trutta) with physicochemical factors of the interstitial zone (e.g., oxygen, specific conductance, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, pH and redox potential). Interstitial water quality was identified as a limiting factor for egg development (median of relative hatching rates = 0.23). Hatching success was unimodal in hatchery and field references incubated in free‐flowing water, but bimodal (very high or very low hatching success) in natural sediment exposures. The effects of physicochemical factors on the hatching success of Salmo trutta strongly depended on both the time and spatial scale analysed. The variables retained in the models differed between the macroscale (over all rivers), the river‐specific scale (within a river) and the microscale (at different sediment depths). Egg hatching success decreased with increased substratum depth (decrease of 26% in 150 mm compared with 50 mm). Increasingly more variable interstitial water conditions (e.g., oxygen) throughout the egg incubation period suggest progressive degradation rates in the stream substratum during the incubation period at the microscale level. Consequently, consideration of different spatial and temporal scales is necessary for the evaluation of habitat quality in salmonid conservation and catchment management plans.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) as essential habitat of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and pompano dolphinfish (C. equiselis) during early life and to characterize conditions in which they were found. Eight ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted during the summer months from 2007 to 2010 in northern Gulf waters off Texas and Louisiana (26–28°N, 87–93°W), during which 1145 dolphinfish larvae were collected. C. hippurus, the dominant dolphinfish species, were collected in 57% of sampling sites with an overall mean density of 0.73 larvae 1000 m?3, whereas C. equiselis were only collected at 18% of sites with a mean density of 0.12 larvae 1000 m?3. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to examine the relationship between several environmental parameters and C. hippurus presence/absence and density. Both presence/absence and density GAMs indicated that catches of C. hippurus larvae increased near fronts and eddies and that increased abundances were most strongly associated with higher salinities and cooler temperatures. In addition, our models showed that C. hippurus larvae were positively associated with C. equiselis larvae, suggesting that C. hippurus and C. equiselis use similar habitats. Results of this study indicate that the Gulf may represent important spawning and/or nursery habitat of dolphinfishes and that mesoscale features and physicochemical conditions influence the distribution and abundance of C. hippurus larvae in this region.  相似文献

  1. Translocation is used to conserve mussels, yet there remains a debate about its merit owing to poor understating of its effects on transported mussels.
  2. This study evaluated survivorship, body condition, and total glycogen and lipids for one common and widely distributed species (Cyclonaias pustulosa), two rare species (Cyclonaias petrina; Lampsilis bracteata), and one species complex (Fusconaia sp. – Fusconaia chunii and Fusconaia flava) from the East Fork of the Trinity River and the Llano River of Texas.
  3. Survivorship estimates for C. pustulosa and Fusconaia sp. using the Kaplan–Meier estimator were high in the East Fork. Body condition, glycogen, and total lipids varied for C. pustulosa and Fusconaia sp., which may have indicated a short-term impact. For the Llano, survivorship of C. petrina and L. bracteata was high for the resident treatments but significantly reduced for the translocation treatments.
  4. The decline in survivorship for C. petrina was mirrored by decreases in the body condition, which may indicate inability to acclimate to novel environments. For L. bracteata, declines in survivorship were due to predation by Procyon lotor, racoon. A large flood of 3,766 m3 s−1 at the end of the study eliminated both study sites.
  5. The findings of this study show that translocating mussels can be successful; however, sublethal effects and mortality may still occur. These effects are rooted in species-specific differences, which is not unexpected because mussel species vary in how they cope with environmental change based on their life-history traits. However, these traits are rarely considered when translocating mussels.
  6. To complicate matters, most mussel species have yet to be evaluated on how they respond to translocation, and for species where such information is available, adults are the primary focus. Addressing these knowledge gaps is critical for determining the appropriateness of translocation and improving its efficacy.

Abstract – The spotfin chub Erimonax monachus is a rare cyprinid fish endemic to the Tennessee River drainage, and it is federally listed as threatened in the USA. Microhabitat use of spotfin chubs was studied via stream snorkelling in the Emory River watershed, Tennessee, one of the last remaining populations of this species. We used a Bayesian generalised linear mixed model to evaluate microhabitat covariates related to the presence/absence of spotfin chubs among eight stream sites across three seasons (early summer, late summer and fall). In general, spotfin chubs were more likely to be present in microhabitats characterised by boulder/bedrock substrates, medium to high velocity, and medium depth (typical of the run habitat). However, the patterns were not necessarily consistent among seasons or stream sites, due partly to interactions between microhabitat and macrohabitat covariates. Specifically, spotfin chubs were more selective of bedrock and boulder substrate at smaller stream sites where they were less abundant, and they were more selective of higher velocity at warmer stream temperatures (early and late summer). Our data indicate that spotfin chubs may exhibit flexible microhabitat use to some extent, and their microhabitat use may differ by macrohabitat characteristics such as stream size and water temperature. This study provided a refined understanding of microhabitat use of spotfin chubs and suggests that effective conservation of this declining species should identify and protect available suitable habitat across space and time.  相似文献

A catchment‐scale salmon, Salmo salar L., habitat enhancement scheme was developed for the River Main (Northern Ireland) with reference to baseline habitat and electric fishing surveys. In total, 19 separate sites were enhanced using flow deflectors or random boulder addition. Habitat suitability for juvenile salmon increased at enhanced sites following the scheme, and significant changes in underlying physical habitat characteristics (particle size, depth and flow) were detected after the installation of flow deflectors. The overall index of salmon fry recruitment, monitored across the catchment, showed no change between pre‐ and post‐enhancement periods. The mean biomass of salmon evident at individual enhancement sites (5.1 g m?2) was significantly higher than the mean biomass at control sites (1.2 g m?2). Increased densities of >0+ juvenile salmon were associated with enhanced sites relative to controls. Marking studies indicated the potential for long‐range dispersal of juvenile salmon between 0+ (summer) and 1+ (summer) age classes. The potential of the scheme to enhance the local salmon stock was discussed.  相似文献

1. Crayfish are culturally and ecologically important species in freshwater ecosystems, but many are now threatened with extinction, due to threats such as habitat loss. Depending on their habitat selectivity and sensitivity, freshwater crayfish could provide effective targets for stream monitoring, restoration and conservation. This study used repeated field surveys of the threatened Murray crayfish, Euastacus armatus (family Parastacidae), to establish their habitat preferences and sensitivity to habitat loss across mesohabitat and microhabitat scales within upland streams of south‐east Australia. 2. Selectivity analysis revealed that upland populations of E. armatus displayed a strong preference for areas of intermediate water flow velocity, deeper water, and stream beds dominated by boulders and gravel. Variations in E. armatus density among and within the two upland streams aligned with these microhabitat preferences, with best‐subsets analyses revealing that E. armatus abundance hotspots were best predicted by models combining water depth with percentage cover of boulders, gravel and overhanging riparian vegetation. 3. Major shifts in stream habitat condition from 2009 to 2015 (e.g. 32% and 50% decline in boulder and overhanging vegetation cover, respectively) was associated with a 91% decline in E. armatus mean density within glide‐pool mesohabitats. 4. These findings highlight how habitat specialization in threatened crayfish such as E. armatus may render them sensitive to changes in stream habitat condition, and how targeted monitoring, restoration and conservation of their preferred habitats could yield multiple benefits for montane freshwater ecosystems. Detailed knowledge of habitat requirements is particularly relevant to the conservation of rare and threatened fish species because habitat fragmentation and loss are usually the major threats to species with limited distributions and restricted habitat requirements, and habitat restoration is typically the first step in species' recovery plans. This paper documents the macro‐, meso‐ and microhabitat habitat associations of a small threatened percichthyid, the Oxleyan pygmy perch, Nannoperca oxleyana, in south‐eastern Queensland and north‐eastern New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
  • 2. The species' range encompasses approximately 530 km of coastline from Coongul Creek on Fraser Island, Queensland (25° 16′S, 153° 09′E) south to Tick Gate Swamp near the township of Wooli, NSW (29° 54′S, 153° 15′E). It is confined primarily to dystrophic, acidic, freshwater systems draining through sandy coastal lowlands and Banksia ‐ dominated heath ecosystems.
  • 3. Both lentic and lotic environments provide habitat for N. oxleyana but the species is found only in slow‐flowing pools and backwaters of river channels and tributaries as well as in swampy drainages, lakes, ponds and dams.
  • 4. Trapping studies found that an abundance of structural aquatic habitat was a defining microhabitat feature either in the form of beds of emergent or submerged plants or the presence of steep/undercut banks fringed with the semi‐submerged branches and fine rootlets of riparian vegetation. When present, leaf litter and snags also provided cover.
  • 5. Recent and historical survey data suggest that human activities have had a significant influence on contemporary species presence/absence patterns and may have been responsible for the prominent gaps within the Queensland‐NSW distribution of N. oxleyana.
  • 6. The distinctive relationships of N. oxleyana with features of aquatic habitat at the macro‐, meso‐ and microhabitat scale demonstrate principles applicable to any study focused on the conservation of an endangered fish species.

There is a world‐wide need for information on the ecology and habitat dependencies of important fish species. Recreational fishing surveys represent a potential source of data to increase our knowledge of fish distribution and habitat relationships. Here, a case study is provided on two key recreational species, King George Whiting Sillaginodes punctatus (Cuvier) and Snapper Chrysophrys auratus (Forster). The data came from a recreational fishing survey where 10,978 interviews were conducted from 1998 to 2013 in Western Port, Victoria, Australia. Spatial mapping of catch rate in relation to depth and habitat showed that S. punctatus distribution was related to seagrass cover while C. auratus distribution was related to deeper reef habitat. Juveniles of both species were more abundant in the south‐eastern section of the bay, where water quality is affected by catchment inputs. Overall, the study showed that the inclusion of spatial and habitat information in the design of recreational fishing surveys can significantly increase understanding of the ecology of key species.  相似文献

  • 1. In France, the distribution of the native white‐clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is restricted, fragmented and mainly located in headwater streams. To conserve this indigenous species, it is necessary to characterize its habitat preferences.
  • 2. Seven brooks in the Deux‐Sèvres Département (western France) containing wild populations of A. pallipes were studied to determine its ranges of tolerance to 19 physical and chemical water parameters. On two brooks, the Sèvre Nantaise and the Verdonnière, sites with and without A. pallipes were compared. Each site was sampled twice monthly from November 2002 to November 2004.
  • 3. It was found that the white‐clawed crayfish was able to tolerate wide ranges of values of some of the measured parameters. The Magot site harboured the largest A. pallipes population (17.5 crayfish m?2) and had dissolved oxygen concentrations as low as 4.93 mg L?1, while water temperature rose above 20°C for several consecutive days during summer and nitrate concentrations were always found to be above 30 mg L?1. These unusual findings could call into question the status of A. pallipes as a bioindicator of good water quality.
  • 4. Principal component analyses (PCA) suggested that an increase of organic matter was a discriminant factor for the presence or absence of A. pallipes. In addition, sites with and without crayfish on the Sèvre Nantaise brook showed showed significant differences (p<0.05) in total organic carbon (TOC), and those on the Verdonnière brook in turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS).

Ecology of Freshwater Fish 2011: 20: 42–51. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S Abstract – The colonisation of Gironde (SW France) river catchment by juvenile, eel, Anguilla anguilla, flounder Platychtys flesus and thinlipp mullet Liza ramada was investigated comparatively using Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca composition of otolith. The relation between Sr, Ba and habitat was investigated based on Sr and Ba water composition sampled each month along the estuary‐river gradient. A total of 50 mullets, 30 eels and 47 flounders were collected in the Gironde river catchment. Analysis was performed with a Femtosecond LA‐ICPMS along a trajectory from the core to the edge. Sr and Ba water concentrations discriminated three habitats within the Gironde system, the lower estuary, the upper estuary and the freshwater sites. A signal processing method based on Gaussian hidden Markov models was applied to the multielemental life‐history data. The linear model used to allocate a Gironde habitat to coupled Sr, Ca values was parameterised with seasonal patterns and magnitude of Sr and Ba water values in the different habitats. The results showed that the three species used three different habitats and they had a large diversity of habitat use patterns with resident and nomadic tactics. Resident tactics were less frequent than nomadic tactics that suggested individual fish used two or more habitats. Mullet used a wider range of habitats in the lower part of the estuary than eel and flounder and switched habitats more frequently. Flounders tended to colonise initially freshwater, and then estuarine habitats later in life while mullets used the entire range of available catchment habitats throughout their life.  相似文献

Understanding how habitat selection is adjusted to different ecological conditions is essential to improve predictive modelling of population dynamics. We describe brown trout Salmo trutta summer habitat selection patterns through univariate and multivariate habitat selection functions across defined river reach typologies. We sampled 44 sites and performed a principal component analysis that defined eight reach types differing in both local site and catchment‐scale physical features. We observed ontogenetic changes in habitat selection, as trout preferred deeper and slower flowing water as they increased in size. Likewise, selectivity for different types of structural habitat elements changed through ontogeny. Both patterns were consistent across reach types. Moreover, we detected spatial variations in habitat selection patterns within age‐classes among different reach types. Our results indicate that brown trout is a habitat generalist and suggest that spatial variations in habitat selection patterns are driven by physical and environmental factors operating at multiple spatial scales.  相似文献
