Diaphragmatic hernia in a cat mimicking a pulmonary mass

A seven-year-old castrated British shorthair cross cat was presented for coughing of five-weeks duration. Thoracic radiographs and an unguided bronchoalveolar lavage showed changes consistent with inflammatory airway disease. In addition, a soft tissue density was evident in the thoracic films between the heart and the diaphragm. Exploratory thoracotomy demonstrated a diaphragmatic hernia, probably congenital in origin, with incarceration of a portion of the hepatic parenchyma. The herniated portion of liver was resected surgically and the defect in the diaphragm closed. The cat was given a 10-day course of doxycycline post-operatively and the cough did not recur subsequently. In retrospect, the hernia was potentially an incidental problem, the cat's coughing being attributable to inflammatory airway disease.     

Retinal diseases in the dog and cat: an overview and update

This article reviews recent developments in the field of canine and feline retinal disease, with emphasis on the hereditary retinopathies.     

Hiatal hernia in the dog and cat: A retrospective study of 16 cases

Sixteen cases of hiatal hernia were diagnosed in cats and dogs at the University of Tennessee between 1978 and 1989. Three cases were found as incidental findings during thoracic or abdominal radiography and another two cases were found during post mortem examination. The remaining 11 cases were evaluated clinically and radiographically. The results of conservative or surgical therapy were reviewed. Not all animals with a hiatal hernia were symptomatic. Five animals with signs underwent surgery and another three had surgical intervention but were asymptomatic. Medical management was successful in controlling the signs in two animals showing signs consistent with reflux oesophagitis. One dog with ‘shortened oesophagus syndrome’ was treated inappropriately with conventional surgical techniques used in veterinary medicine for hiatal hernia. This study clearly emphasises the need to evaluate carefully each dog or cat with hiatal hernia before choosing the best therapeutic plan.     

猪膈疝病例及其成因的探讨

猪膈疝极为少见。笔者曾在临床上遇到 2例死于膈疝的病例。 1例为临诊时刚刚死亡 ,1例在发病后对其临床表现进行了观察 ,经治疗无效后死亡。现就剖检变化及其成因探讨如下。1　病例资料病例 1 :1 995年 1月 1 5日 ,本学院前桃园街居民祁××家饲养 75日龄梅山猪与大约克杂交一代猪 6头 ,其中 1头重约 2 8kg,营养较好的猪只突然发病 ,当晚畜主前来求诊。主诉 :晚上喂猪时 ,6头猪都抢着吃食。忽然 ,平时吃食最多、生长最快的 1头退出食槽 ,呆立一旁 ,四肢张开 ,呈胸式呼吸 ,口流泡沫 ,并发出哼哼声 ,最后站立不稳 ,呈犬坐式呼吸 ,呼吸音粗厉 ,…     

Diaphragmatic rupture and biliary tract damage in a dog

A 9-month-old bitch was presented with respiratory distress 7 days after a road traffic accident. Radiographs showed a severe hydrothorax and moderate ascites. The removal of bile-stained fluid by thoracentesis reduced the dyspnoea. A diaphragmatic and a hepatic duct rupture were found and repaired at laparotomy. A biliary peritonitis and pleuritis was present. A blood bilirubin of 67 μmol/1 and elevated serum enzymes were present prior to surgery. These changes were largely reversed once the leakage was stopped.
