Results of mare performance tests in the field (MPT-F) of 10,949 mares, mare performance tests at station (MPT-S) of 1,712 mares, and inspections of horses intended for sale at riding horse auctions (AU) of 4,772 horses were used to investigate genetic correlations between corresponding performance traits. Mare performance tests were held in 1995 to 2004 and auction inspections in 1999 to 2004. Scores on a scale from 0 to 10 were given for gaits under rider (walk, trot, canter), rideability (evaluated by judging commission and test rider), free-jumping (ability, style, total), and character. Radiography results of 5,102 Hanoverian Warmblood horses were used to investigate genetic correlations between performance traits and particular radiographic findings. The radiographic findings included osseous fragments in fetlock and hock joints, deforming arthropathy in hock joints, and distinct radiographic findings in the navicular bones, which were analyzed as binary traits, and radiographic appearance of the navicular bones, which was analyzed as a quasi-linear trait. Genetic parameters were estimated multivariately in linear animal models with REML using information on the horses radiographed and their contemporaries (n = 18,609). Heritability of performance traits ranged between 0.14 and 0.61, and heritability of radiographic findings between 0.14 and 0.33. Additive genetic correlations between corresponding performance traits were close to unity for MPT-F and MPT-S, ranged from 0.81 to 0.90 for MPT-F and AU, and were 0.75 to 0.92 for MPT-S and AU. Genetic correlations between performance and radiography results were mostly close to zero. Indications of negative additive genetic correlations were observed for deforming arthropathy in hock joints and canter, rideability evaluated by test rider, jumping traits and character, and osseous fragments in hock joints and character. Selection of horses for radiological health of their limbs will assist further genetic improvement of the performance of young Warm-blood riding horses.  相似文献

The results of a standardized radiological examination of 5231 Hanoverian Warmblood horses were used to investigate heritability of and genetic correlations between prevalent radiographic findings in the equine limbs. Radiographic findings were categorized by joint location and type of visible alterations and analyzed as all-or-none traits. Heritabilities and correlations were estimated multivariately for most prevalent radiographic findings in equine limbs using Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) and Gibbs Sampling (GS). Linear animal models and linear sire models were used for REML; sire threshold models were used for GS analyses. Heritabilities and residual correlations from linear model analyses were transformed from observed scale to underlying liability scale. Osseous fragments were seen in fetlock joints (OFF) of 23.5% and in hock joints (OFH) of 9.2% of investigated horses. Deforming arthropathy in hock joints (DAH) was diagnosed in 12.0% and pathologic changes in navicular bones (PCN) in 25.8% of investigated horses. Heritabilities differed little between analyses with animal and sire models and with REML and GS. Ranges of heritability estimates were h2 = 0.16–0.44 with REML and h2 = 0.07–0.43 with GS. Genetic correlation estimates were larger in GS than in REML analyses. Additive genetic correlation between OFF and DAH was positive (rg = 0.25 to 0.77). Negative additive genetic correlations were determined between OFF and OFH (rg = − 0.17 to − 0.82), between OFH and DAH (rg = − 0.14 to − 0.81), and between OFH and PCN (rg = − 0.19 to − 0.26). No relevant additive genetic correlations were estimated between PCN and OFF, and between PCN and DAH. The results of the present study indicate that the prevalences of common radiographic findings in the limbs of young riding horses are relevantly influenced by genetics and probably caused by different genes. Genetic correlations between radiological health traits therefore deserve closer attention in horse breeding. The quantitatively most important radiographic findings should be concurrently considered as individual traits in order to provide for general improvement of radiological health of the limbs of young Warmblood riding horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether selection schemes accounting for orthopedic health traits were compatible with breeding progress in performance parameters in Hanoverian Warmblood horses. ANIMALS: 5,928 horses. PROCEDURE: Relative breeding values (RBVs) were predicted for osseous fragments in fetlock (metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal) and tarsal joints, deforming arthropathy in tarsal joints, and pathologic changes in distal sesamoid bones. Selection schemes were developed on the basis of total indices for radiographic findings (TIR), dressage (TID), and jumping (TIJ). Response to selection was traced over 2 generations of horses for dressage and jumping ability and all-purpose breeding. Development of mean RBVs and mean total indices in sires and prevalences of orthopedic health traits in their offspring were used to assess response to selection. RESULTS: Giving equal weight toTIR andTID, TIJ, or a combined index of 60% TID and 40% TIJ, 43% to 53% of paternal grandsires and 70% to 82% of descending sires passed selection. In each case, RBVs and total indices increased by as much as 9% in selected sires, when compared with all sires, and prevalences of orthopedic health traits in offspring of selected sires decreased relatively by as much as 16%. When selection was exclusively based on TID, TIJ, or TID and TIJ, percentages of selected sires were 44% to 66% in the first and 73% to 84% in the second generation and TID and TIJ increased by 9% to 10% and 19% to 23%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Compared with exclusively performance-based selection, percentages of selected sires changed slightly and breeding progress in TID, TIJ, or TID and TIJ was only slightly decreased; however, prevalences of orthopedic health traits decreased in offspring of TIR-selected sires.  相似文献

The results of a standardized radiological examination of 3748 young Hanoverian Warmblood horses selected for sale at auction as riding horses were used to quantify the influence of systematic effects on and to estimate genetic parameters for the prevalence of pathologic changes in the navicular bones. Radiographic findings in the navicular bones of the front limbs were analyzed as all‐or‐none traits. The pathologic changes were mostly classified as slight [PCN(I); 14.9%], less often as moderate [PCN(II); 5.3%] or severe [PCN(III); 1.8%]. Date and year of auction had a significant influence on the prevalence of documented radiographic findings. The prevalence of PCN(I) was further significantly dependent on the examiner, the type and the quality of auction. PCN(II) was significantly more prevalent in male than in female horses. The age, the anticipated suitability and the region of origin of the horses did not have any significant influence on the prevalence of pathologic changes in navicular bones. A higher percentage of genes of the Hanoverian and the Holstein Warmblood horse increased the probability of PCN(I) classification. A significant influence of the sire was found for PCN(I) and PCN(II), and of the male founder for PCN(II) and PCN(III). The female founder was significant only for PCN(II). In general, radiographic findings of any severity in front left and right navicular bones were significantly correlated with each other. Restricted maximum likelihood (REML) was used for the estimation of genetic parameters. The analyses were performed multivariately in linear animal and sire models including height at withers as a separate trait. Heritability estimates for the prevalence of PCN(I), PCN(II) and PCN(III) of horses of both sexes ranged between h2 = 0.09 and 0.21. When distinguishing between findings in males and females, somewhat implausible estimates were obtained for PCN(II) in females, which might have been caused by their low prevalence. The additive genetic correlations between the investigated traits indicated that radiographic findings consistent with navicular syndrome have a uniform genetic pattern in males and in females, and irrespective of their severity. However, their genetic correlation to height at withers was found to be inconsistent and, therefore, not to be utilizable for selection.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Osseous spurs on the dorsoproximal aspect of the third metatarsal bone (MtIII) are common, but their clinical significance is unknown. Objectives: To verify the sites of insertion of the dorsal metatarsal ligament and the tendons of tibialis cranialis and fibularis tertius in order to determine if periarticular osteophytes and entheseophytes could be differentiated radiologically; and to determine the frequency of occurrence of osseous spurs on the dorsoproximal aspect of MtIII. Hypotheses: The frequency of osseous spurs on the dorsoproximal aspect of MtIII would be higher in lame than in clinically normal horses and higher in horses with distal hock joint pain or proximal suspensory desmitis than in horses with other causes of hindlimb lameness. Methods: A retrospective study of data from the clinical work up and tarsal radiographs of 455 horses was performed. Horses were divided into: Group 1, clinically normal horses; Groups 2–5, according to the diagnosis of hindlimb lameness. Radiographs were examined for the presence of an osseous spur on the dorsoproximal aspect of MtIII; pathology of the distal tarsal joints was graded. The associations between the presence of a spur and lameness, diagnosis group and the grade of distal tarsal joint abnormalities were analysed statistically using Chi‐squared tests. Results: An osseous spur was present in 25% of horses; 13% of horses with bilateral radiographs had bilateral spurs. There was no significant difference in frequency of the presence of a spur between lame and nonlame horses, or between horses with other causes of hindlimb lameness and horses with proximal suspensory desmitis and/or distal tarsal joint pain. The presence of an osseous spur was significantly associated with the grade of radiological abnormality in the distal tarsal joints (tarsometatarsal joint P = 0.018: centrodistal joint P = 0.027). In many horses it was not possible to differentiate accurately between osteophytes and entheseophytes. Conclusions and potential relevance: The presence of an osseous spur on the dorsoproximal aspect of MtIII in the absence of other radiological abnormalities may be an incidental finding. Osseous spurs occur more frequently in hocks with radiological abnormalities in the distal tarsal joints and may be an indicator of distal tarsal joint osteoarthritis. The clinical significance must be established by intra‐articular analgesia.  相似文献

Navicular disease or podotrochlosis has long been known to cause forelimb lameness in horses. It had been proposed that the development of podotrochlosis has similarities to the human osteoarthritis (OA) complex. Alterations of the navicular bone can be made visible early in life only on the basis of radiographs. Reports on the prevalences of navicular disease indicate that radiological alterations in the navicular bone are present in different warmblood populations at frequencies of between 14.9% and 87.6%. Genetic factors play an important role in the development of the radiological signs. Estimates of heritability using animal threshold models range from h2 = 0.09 to h2 = 0.40. Estimated additive genetic correlations between radiological changes in the navicular bone and other orthopaedic health traits indicated that they mostly develop genetically independently of each other. There was a negative genetic correlation between radiological changes in the navicular bone and the number of tournament entries and placings. It has also been shown that reduction of radiological changes of navicular bones and improvement of breeding values for performance of riding horses can be achieved if selection is based on breeding values for these traits simultaneously. An optimised markerset was developed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for pathologic changes in the navicular bone of Hanoverian warmblood horses. The horse genome was scanned using 214 highly polymorphic microsatellites chromosome-wide significant QTL were located on equine chromosomes (ECA) 2, 3, 4, 10, and 26. Genome-wide significant QTL were on ECA2 and on ECA10. Unravelling QTL associated with navicular disease will enhance selection progress for a healthy limb constitution in horses.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated for the prevalence of osseous fragments in distal (DIJ) and proximal interphalangeal (PIJ), fetlock (FJ) and hock joints (HJ) of Hanoverian Warmblood horses by using residual maximum likelihood (REML) with linear animal models. The analyses were based on the results of 10 standardized radiographs of all four limbs of 3725 young riding horses selected for sale at auction. Transformation factors onto the underlying liability scale were verified by a simulation study. The heritability estimates of osseous fragments on the liability scale were in the range of h2 = 0.19–0.60. Further analyses of osseous fragments in FJ and HJ were performed separately in males and females. In both sexes, the heritabilities of osseous fragments in HJ were higher (h2 = 0.41 in males, h2 = 0.25 in females) than those of osseous fragments in FJ (h2 = 0.21 in males, h2 = 0.23 in females). Osseous fragments in the phalangeal joints (DIJ, PIJ, FJ) were genetically correlated moderately positive (rg = 0.19–0.41). The genetic correlations between osseous fragments in the phalangeal joints and in HJ were negative (rg = ?0.27 to ?0.67). Particularly, this applied to osseous fragments in FJ in both sexes, to those in front FJ in males and to osseous fragments in front and hind FJ of females (up to rg = ?1). The heritability of height at withers was estimated at h2 = 0.27–0.28. Genetic correlations between height at withers and osseous fragments in equine limb joints were mostly moderately positive (up to rg = 0.75). We conclude from our results that osseous fragments in phalangeal and hock joints are genetically different traits but sex‐specific expression of osseous fragments was unlikely.  相似文献

Heritabilities were estimated for osteochondrosis (OC) in fetlock and hock joints and palmar/plantar osseous fragments in fetlock joints of South German Coldblood (SGC) horses using Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) under a linear animal model. The analyses were based on the results of a standardized radiographic examination of 167 SGC horses with a mean age of 14 months. The heritabilities linearly estimated and transformed onto the liability scale were for OC in fetlock joints 0.16 and for OC in hock joints 0.04. Considering fetlock and hock OC together, results in a heritability of 0.17. Palmar/plantar osseus fragments of the fetlock joints showed a heritability of 0.48. We concluded that there is most likely a genetic component in the variation of the development of osteochondrosis in fetlock and hock joints as well as for palmar/plantar osseus fragments of fetlock joints of the investigated population of SGC horses.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Prepurchase examinations of horses are used increasingly as a means of evaluating future soundness. Data is lacking in the literature of the radiographic findings and results of the lameness examination of comprehensive prepurchase examinations. OBJECTIVE: To summarise the clinical and radiographic findings of prepurchase examinations and determine if radiographic findings correlated with the lameness examination and sale outcome. METHODS: Records of 510 cases were reviewed, radiographs evaluated and grades assigned the navicular bone, distal phalanx, and tarsus. Follow-up information on the horse status was obtained by telephone interviews for 173 horses. RESULTS: Thoroughbred geldings represented the most common breed and sex, mean age 8 years, mean asking price 12,439.40 dollars, and 52.8% were lame. Radiography was the most common diagnostic procedure performed (61.6%), with views of the front feet requested most often (86.6%) followed by the tarsi (68.1%). Grade 1 was most common for the navicular bone while Grade 2 predominated for the distal phalanx. The number of sound horses decreased as grades became more severe. For the tarsi, Grades 0 and 1 were most common for the proximal intertarsal and distal intertarsal/metatarsal joints, respectively. Horses with significant tarsal changes were still able to compete at their expected level. With respect to the radiographic examination, the mean +/- s.d. grade of the horses which were not lame at follow-up was 1.2 +/- 0.9 for the navicular bone and 15 +/- 0.8 for the third phalanx. The mean +/- s.d. grade of sound horses for the distal intertarsal joint was 0.7 +/- 0.6 and 1.14 +/- 0.8 for the tarsometatarsal joint. Horses for which owner follow-up was available and which had a Grade 3 score were also evaluated. For the navicular bone, 17/31 with a Grade 3 remained in active use at follow-up and for the distal phalanx 21/27 were in active use. For the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints, 20/21 with a Grade 3 were still in active use. CONCLUSIONS: Prepurchase examinations can have a significant effect on the outcome of the sale. For the navicular bone and distal phalanx, higher grades were associated with lameness. In contrast, higher grades in the tarsus were less likely to be associated with lameness. Warmbloods tended to have more extensive changes in the navicular bone and distal phalanx relative to Thoroughbreds but were not as lame. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Radiographic changes detected in the navicular bone, distal phalanx and tarsus should be interpreted with consideration to the clinical examination.  相似文献

AIM: To characterise the prevalence and distribution of radiographic changes in the hocks and stifles of Thoroughbred yearling colts and fillies in New Zealand and compare them with other populations of young horses. METHODS: Repository radiographs taken in New Zealand for the 2003-2006 Thoroughbred national yearling sales were evaluated by two individual readers. The distribution of radiographic changes was classified as left side only, right side only, or bilateral. Lesions were categorised by type, location, and sex of the yearling. Complete sets of hock and stifle radiographs of 1,505 yearlings were evaluated. RESULTS: Osteophytes or enthesophytes were seen radiographically in the distal tarsal joints of 460/1,505 (31%) horses. Osteochondrosis was seen in the tibiotarsal joint of 66/1,505 (4%) horses, and in the femoropatellar joint of 40/1,505 (3%) horses. Radiographic lucency in the distal or axial aspect of the medial femoral condyle was seen in 247/1,505 (16%) horses, and lucencies consistent with subchondral cyst-like lesions were seen in 26/1,505 (2%) horses. No significant difference was seen in the proportion of colts and fillies with radiographic changes in the hock or stifle. The prevalence of osteochondrosis and subchondral cyst-like lesions in the stifles of the yearlings examined were similar to those reported in Thoroughbred yearling sale horses in the United States of America (USA). The prevalence of changes in the distal tarsal joints was similar to those reported in Standardbred and Thoroughbred yearlings from Scandinavia and the USA. CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in the prevalence of osteochondrosis in the hock and stifle, lucencies in the distal medial femoral condyle, or radiographic changes in the distal tarsal joints between colts and fillies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Establishment of the normal prevalence and distribution of radiographic changes in the hocks and stifles of Thoroughbred yearlings in New Zealand will allow comparison with populations of young horses in other countries. Knowledge of the normal prevalence will assist veterinarians to identify abnormally high or low prevalences on individual farms, to further investigate the pathogenesis of the lesions.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Distal border fragments of the navicular bone can be seen in lame and nonlame horses and their clinical significance remains open to debate. Objectives: To describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of distal border fragments and the adjacent navicular bone. To investigate the relationship between fragments and other abnormalities of the navicular bone and the distal sesamoidean impar ligament (DSIL). Methods: Horses were included if pain causing forelimb lameness was localised to the foot and high‐field MR images were acquired. The size and location of distal border fragments were recorded. Abnormalities in the adjacent navicular bone were graded to obtain a fragment grade. A total navicular bone grade was assigned. The DSIL was also graded. A Chi‐squared test was used to test for associations between the presence of a fragment and specific lesions involving the distal border of the navicular bone, the total grade of the navicular bone, and the grade of the DSIL. Results: 427 horses were included and 111 fragments observed. There was a significant association between the presence of a fragment and the total navicular bone grade, osseous cyst‐like lesions, increased number and size of the synovial invaginations of the distal border, increased signal intensity on fat suppressed images and size of distal border entheseophytes. Conclusions: There is an association between distal border fragments and other pathological MRI abnormalities of the navicular bone. Potential relevance: Distal border fragments are part of navicular disease, but their contribution to pain and lameness remains to be clarified.  相似文献

This study aimed to quantify the factors associated with the prevalence of the radiological signs of osteochondrosis (OC) and osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) in South German Coldblood (SGC) horses. The prevalence of OC and OCD in fetlock and hock joints was analysed in 167 young coldblood horses with a mean age of 14 months. The presence of at least one osteochondrotic lesion (OC) in fetlock or hock joints was documented for 61.7% of the horses and 26.9% of the horses had osseus fragments. Osteochondrotic findings at the dorsal aspect of the sagittal ridge of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bone were seen in 53.9% of the horses and palmar/plantar osseous fragments in fetlock joints in 16.2% of the horses. Hock joint OC was found in 40.1% of the horses and hock OCD in 0.6%. Osteochondrotic findings in the distal part of the tibia were prevalent in 28.1% and in the lateral trochlea tali in 17.4% of the horses. The sex of the investigated horses significantly influenced the prevalence of OC in fetlock and hock joints, as well as the findings in the distal part of the tibia and lateral trochlea tali. Age at radiological examination was significant for the prevalence of OC in hock joints, palmar/plantar osseous fragments in fetlock joints and osteochondrotic findings in the distal part of the tibia. Female horses showed a 2-fold higher risk for OC in fetlock and hock joints than male horses. The distribution of the affected horses by age classes showed that radiographic signs of OC in fetlock and hock joints significantly increased at an age of about 1 year. We can conclude from our study that fetlock and hock OC is a prevalent radiographic finding in more than 1-year-old female and male SGC horses.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Osteoarthrosis (OA) in the distal tarsal joints, bone spavin, is a well known condition which is common in Icelandic horses age 6-12 years. OBJECTIVES: To determine the nature, location and age of appearance of early radiographic and histological changes in the centrodistal tarsal joint (CD) of young Icelandic horses. METHODS: Slab sections from the CD of young Icelandic horses were examined by high detail radiography (age 6 months to 6 years, n = 111) and histology (age 6 months to 4 years, n = 82) to detect and describe the early changes indicative of OA. Horses younger than 5 years were unridden. RESULTS: Chondronecrotic lesions histologically similar to those described in the early pathogenesis of OA were seen in 33% of the joints, located both medially and laterally. Radiographic sclerosis of the subchondral bone was recorded in 60% of the specimens, most often medially. Medial location was not associated with chondronecrosis, but was strongly related to age. Sclerosis was an infrequent finding on the lateral side, and was probably secondary to chondronecrosis in the corresponding part of the joint. Small defects in the subchondral bone were considered to be the most specific radiographic sign of OA as they were strongly associated with chondronecrosis. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of chondronecrosis in the young horses indicates an early onset and slow progression of the disease. The early appearance also shows that the initiation of the disease is unrelated to the use of horses for riding. As clinical manifestation of OA in the distal tarsal joints is most often described in mature or old horses, the first stages of the disease are not likely to result in clinical signs. Subchondral bone sclerosis did not appear to be a primary factor in the development of OA in the CD but was considered to reflect an uneven distribution of biomechanical forces within the joint. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The development of OA in the CD of young Icelandic horses seems to be due to poor conformation or joint architecture rather than trauma or overloading. These aetiological factors are likely to be of importance for OA in the distal tarsal joints in other breeds as well. The influence of hindlimb conformation and the architecture of the distal tarsal joints on the biomechanics of joints need to be investigated, preferably by locomotion analysis in young horses.  相似文献

Reasons for performing study: The significance of distal border fragments of the navicular bone is not well understood. There are also no objective data about changes in thickness and proximal/distal extension of the palmar cortex of the navicular bone. Objectives: To describe the distribution of distal border fragments and their association with other radiological abnormalities of the navicular bone and describe the shape of the navicular bone in sound horses and horses with foot‐related lameness, including navicular pathology. Methods: Sound horses had radiographs acquired as part of a prepurchase examination. Lame horses had forelimb lameness abolished by palmar nerve blocks performed at the base of the proximal sesamoid bones. Diagnosis was assigned prospectively based on results of local analgesia and all imaging findings. The thickness of the palmar cortex of the navicular bone and size of proximal/distal extensions were measured objectively. Other radiological abnormalities were evaluated subjectively and each navicular bone graded. Results: Fifty‐five sound and 377 lame horses were included. All measurements were larger in lame compared with sound horses except the size of the distal extension of the palmar cortex. Fragments were observed in 3.6 and 8.7% of sound and lame horses respectively and in 24.1% of horses with a diagnosis of primary navicular pathology. There was an association between fragments and overall navicular bone grade, radiolucent areas at the angles of the distal border of the navicular bone and number and size of the synovial invaginations. Conclusions and potential relevance: The palmar cortex of the navicular bone was thicker in lame compared with sound horses. Distal border fragments were most frequent in horses with navicular pathology. Evaluation of changes in shape of the navicular bone may also be important for recognition of pathological abnormalities of the bone.  相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Understanding of the development of pathology and source of pain in distal tarsal osteoarthritis is poorly understood. Magnetic resonance imaging is often used in the analysis of human osteoarthritis (OA) because it is sensitive to early changes. HYPOTHESIS: In association with distal tarsal joint (DTJ) pain, there will be an alteration in the characteristic subchondral bone (SCB) thickness pattern of horses with no history of pain when subjected to low-level exercise. METHODS: Sixteen cadaver tarsal joints were collected from 9 mature horses with a history of tarsal pain and radiographic evidence of OA; 3 cadaver tarsi were collected from 2 mature horses with a history of tarsal pain and no radiographic abnormality. Magnetic resonance images were acquired using high-resolution sagittal 3D T1 weighted spoiled gradient echo sequence. Subchondral bone thickness was measured on sagittal images at dorsal and plantar locations on the proximal and distal aspects of the central (CT) and third (T3) tarsal bones and proximal aspect of the third metatarsal bone (MT3). RESULTS: In tarsi with radiographic evidence of OA medial and lateral SCB thicknesses were greater than midline on the proximal and distal aspects of CT and T3. Lateral SCB thickness was greater than medial on the proximal aspect of MT3. There was an increase in SCB thickness at the majority of sites compared with normal horses. There were too few joints in the group without radiographic changes to analyse statistically. In painful tarsi SCB thickness was greater medially than laterally at all sites. In horses without tarsal pain all lateral sites had greater SCB thickness, except the proximal aspect of CT. CONCLUSIONS: There is alteration of normal SCB thickness patterns in painful tarsi. Different thickness patterns could represent different types of pathological processes. Potential clinical relevance: Further work is required to elucidate the pathological processes leading to OA of the DTJs.  相似文献

Evaluation of foot pain in the standing horse by magnetic resonance imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The records of 41 horses with previously undiagnosed foot pain that had been examined by standing magnetic resonance imaging were reviewed and follow-up information was obtained from their owners two years after the examination. A range of soft tissue and osseous abnormalities were identified, with multiple lesions frequently occurring. Deep digital flexor tendonitis was recorded in 12 of the horses, and distension of the distal interphalangeal joint was identified in 15, but it was not always associated with lameness; in contrast, distension of the navicular bursa was always associated with lameness in the seven affected horses. Navicular bone lesions were identified in 13 of the horses, often in the absence of radiographic changes. Follow-up information was obtained for 35 of the horses, 27 of which were alive; of these, 16 had returned to their previous level of performance. Of the five horses with navicular bursal changes, four had been euthanased owing to lameness and the other had returned to work at a reduced level.  相似文献

The prevalence of osseous fragments in different limb joints was analysed in 3749 young Warmblood riding horses, which were pre-selected for sale at auction from 1991 to 1998 by the Association of Hanoverian Warmblood Breeders (Verband hannoverscher Warmblutzüchter e.V.) in Verden (Aller), Germany. The evaluation of these horses was based on a standardized radiological examination, including the distal interphalangeal (DIJ), the proximal interphalangeal (PIJ), the metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal (MC/MTJ) and the tarsocrural joints (TCJ). In 32% of all horses at least one osseous fragment was found on these radiographs. TCJ were affected in 9.6% of the horses and MC/MTJ in 20.7%. The percentage of horses affected in the MTJ was significantly higher (13.7%) than that of horses affected in the MCJ (9.5%). The prevalences of osseous fragments were considerably lower in DIJ (4.5%) and PIJ (0.9%). Osseous fragments only occurred either in DIJ or PIJ or MC/MTJ or TCJ in 87% of the affected horses. Depending on the joint type, osseous fragments were found in analogous joints in the front and the hind limbs in up to 26% of the affected horses, whilst bilateral affection occurred in between 10% and 46% of the horses. Distribution of osseous fragments in the limb joints investigated here did not differ significantly between male and female horses. There was a significant increase in the percentage of horses with osseous fragments in MC/MTJ during the study period. The results of this study indicate the need to act against the high prevalences of osseous fragments in the limb joints of young Warmblood riding horses.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to estimate genetic parameters for osteochondrosis (OC) and osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) in fetlock, hock and stifle joints as well as for palmar or plantar osteochondral fragments (POFs) and dorsodistal osteochondral fragments (DOFs) in fetlock joints. For this purpose, the results of a standardized radiographic examination of 7396 Hanoverian Warmblood horses were used. Heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated using residual maximum likelihood (REML) under a linear animal model. Heritability estimates for OC at the different joints were at 0.17–0.34, for OCD at 0.16–0.46, for POFs at 0.19 and for DOFs at 0.22 after transformation onto the liability scale. For osteochondral fragments (OFs), lower heritabilities were estimated, especially in fetlock joints. POFs were genetically negatively correlated with OC in each joint. The size of the heritability estimates indicates that the prevalence of these radiographic findings can be reduced by breeding measures. However, differentiation among the different clinical entities is crucial to avoid underestimation of heritabilities. The analysis of genetic parameters performed in this study indicates that OC and OCD in fetlock, OC and OCD in hock, OC and OCD in stifle joints, POFs of the hindlimbs and DOFs may be treated as different traits.  相似文献

Foot pain is an important cause of lameness in horses. When horses with foot pain have no detectable radiographic abnormalities, soft‐tissue assessment remains a diagnostic challenge without magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Ultrasonography can provide an alternative to MR imaging when that modality is not available but the extent of changes that might be seen has not been characterized. We reviewed the ultrasonographic findings in 39 horses with lameness responding positively to anesthesia of the palmar digital nerves and without radiographically detectable osseous abnormalities. Thirty of the 39 horses had lesions affecting the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), 27 had abnormalities in the distal interphalangeal joint of which six had a visible abnormality in the collateral ligament. Ultrasonographic abnormalities were seen in the podotrochlear bursa in 22 horses and in the ligaments of the navicular bone in two horses. Abnormalities of the navicular bone flexor surface were detected in eight horses. In three of the 39 horses, only the DDFT was affected. The other 36 horses had ultrasonographic abnormalities in more than one anatomical structure. Based on our results, ultrasonographic examination provides useful diagnostic information in horses without radiographic changes.  相似文献

Arthrodesis created by destruction of the articular surfaces of the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints by repeated insertion of a drill was studied in one limb of each of nine horses. Postoperatively, the horses were housed in box stalls for 8 weeks and then confined to a paddock for 19 weeks. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed prior to surgery, immediately following surgery, and at 2,4, 6, 8,10,12,16, 20, and 27 weeks following surgery. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between decreasing degree of lameness and increasing radiographic evidence of bony fusion; fusion of the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints was present in five horses 27 weeks after surgery. The horses lost weight during the first 8 weeks after surgery. Flexion of the treated tarsal joints was decreased significantly at the end of the experiment.
Complications encountered included fracture of the third tarsal bone (five horses), instability of the tarsus (four horses), septic arthritis (three horses), and diarrhea (four horses).
Arthrodesis, with this method of surgical drilling of the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints, is not recommended because of severe pain, prolonged convalescence, and high incidence of complications.  相似文献
