If an exchangeable ion in soil diffuses along a liquid and solid pathway, its diffusion coefficient may be expressed as where D, v, f, C are diffusion coefficient, volume fraction, impedance factor, and concentration terms and the suffixes l,S refer to liquid and solid. The self-diffusion coefficient of the ion is then where D′, Dt, and Ds, are self-diffusion coefficients. D and D′ will vary with concentration. In diffusion out of the soil to a zero sink, the appropriate average diffusion coefficient is, approximately, the self-diffusion coefficient in the undisturbed soil. Diffusion of one ion species is influenced by other ions diffusing in the system through the diffusion potential set up. When ions are diffusing to plant roots, the diffusion potential is likely to be small. A more likely, though more complicated, expression for D than the first equation above is derived by assuming the ion to follow solid and liquid pathways in series as well as in parallel.

Purpose

Intensive agricultural practices have enhanced problems associated with the competing use of limited water resources. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a major contributor to global warming. It is important for researchers to ascertain the relationship between irrigation and soil N2O emissions in order to identify mitigation strategies to reduce nitrous oxide emissions. Different irrigation amounts affect soil water dynamics and nitrogen turnover. The effect of three lower limits of irrigation on soil N2O emissions, influencing factors, and abundance of genes involved in nitrification and denitrification were investigated in tomato irrigated in a greenhouse.

Materials and methods

Observations were performed between April and August 2015 in a long-term irrigated field subjected to different lower limits of irrigation: 20 kPa (D20), 30 kPa (D30), and 40 kPa (D40) from greenhouse soil during the tomato crop season. Soil N2O fluxes were monitored using the static chamber-gas chromatograph method. Copy numbers of genes were determined using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) technique. Characteristics of soil N2O emissions were analyzed, and differences between irrigation regimes were determined. The effects of influencing factors on soil N2O emissions were analyzed, including soil temperature, soil moisture, soil pH, and soil mineral nitrogen, as well as changes in the abundance of soil ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) based on amoA genes and denitrifier genes (nosZ, nirK, and cnorB).

Results and discussion

Our results showed that peaks in N2O emissions occurred 1–5 days after each irrigation. During the whole tomato growth period, soil N2O fluxes were lowest under D30 treatment compared with those under D20 and D40 treatments. Soil NO3 ?-N concentrations were significantly higher than NH4 +-N concentrations. Soil N2O fluxes were significantly related to soil moisture, NH4 +-N concentrations (P < 0.01), soil pH, and AOA copy numbers (P < 0.05). There was no consistent correlation between soil N2O emissions, soil temperature, and soil NO3 ?-N concentrations. Different irrigation regimes significantly affected AOA copy numbers but did not affect the expression of other genes. AOA copy numbers were higher than those of AOB. Soil N2O fluxes significantly affected the AOA copy numbers and potential nitrification rates (P < 0.05).

Conclusions

Soil moisture, pH, and NH4 +-N concentration were important factors affecting soil N2O emissions. Compared with other genes associated with nitrification and denitrification, AOA plays an important role in N2O emissions from greenhouse soils. Selecting a lower limit of irrigation of 30 kPa could effectively reduce N2O emissions from vegetable soils.

Soil compaction and soil moisture are important factors influencing denitrification and N2O emission from fertilized soils. We analyzed the combined effects of these factors on the emission of N2O, N2 and CO2 from undisturbed soil cores fertilized with (150 kg N ha−1) in a laboratory experiment. The soil cores were collected from differently compacted areas in a potato field, i.e. the ridges (ρD=1.03 g cm−3), the interrow area (ρD=1.24 g cm−3), and the tractor compacted interrow area (ρD=1.64 g cm−3), and adjusted to constant soil moisture levels between 40 and 98% water-filled pore space (WFPS).High N2O emissions were a result of denitrification and occurred at a WFPS≥70% in all compaction treatments. N2 production occurred only at the highest soil moisture level (≥90% WFPS) but it was considerably smaller than the N2O-N emission in most cases. There was no soil moisture effect on CO2 emission from the differently compacted soils with the exception of the highest soil moisture level (98% WFPS) of the tractor-compacted soil in which soil respiration was significantly reduced. The maximum N2O emission rates from all treatments occurred after rewetting of dry soil. This rewetting effect increased with the amount of water added. The results show the importance of increased carbon availability and associated respiratory O2 consumption induced by soil drying and rewetting for the emissions of N2O.

Purpose

Soil labile carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools are considered to be sensitive indicators of changes in soil C and N pools. In this study, we examined possible factors affecting spatial and seasonal variations in soil labile C and N pools in the riparian zones in Southeast Queensland, Australia.

Materials and methods

Soil and sediment samples were collected from two sites in the riparian areas. The spatial and seasonal variabilities of soil moisture, hot-water extractable organic C and total N (HWEOC and HWETN), microbial biomass C and N (MBC and MBN), and the relationships among them were examined.

Results and discussion

Soil labile C and N pools decreased along the transects in both soil depths of the two soil types, with the peak or bottom of values detected between upland slope and the riparian zone. Other factors rather than soil moisture were more important in regulating seasonal changes of soil HWEOC and HWETN except the dry-rewetting influence in November 2013. Soil moisture played a significant role in the seasonal variations of MBC and MBN. Soil labile C (HWEOC and MBC) and N (HWETN and MBN) pools at Site 1 (S1; heavy texture), which were significantly higher than those at Site 2 (S2; light texture).

Conclusions

Soil moisture would be an important driving factor for the spatial and seasonal distributions of soil labile C and N pools. Our study highlighted the importance of riparian zones as the hot spot of soil C and N dynamics, especially at the onset of rewetting dry soil in subtropical Australia.

A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the performance of maize (Zea mays L.) on Iwo Soil in relation to different levels of soil moisture, soil compaction and K fertilization. Reductions in dry matter yields of maize were closely associated with soil moisture stress and compaction. There was significant interaction between soil moisture and bulk density, with highest yields occurring at 17% and 21% soil moisture levels for 1.6 and 1.2 g/cm3 bulk densities, respectively. Moisture stress and compaction resulted in greater reductions in the yield of roots than that of shoot. Yield and K uptake were more adversely affected by compaction compared to soil moisture stress. Addition of K increased yield and plant K content but the 60 ppm and 120 ppm rates were not significantly different in terms of improving crop performance. Implications of the results relative to long-term management of Iwo Soil are discussed.

Depending on the top and subsoil textures, semi-arid soils exhibit cohesive and frictional properties that are associated with the relatively high soil strength, bulk density and penetration resistance. The objective of this study was to gain the knowledge of mechanical properties of the compacting chromic luvisols in order to improve the design of tillage tools. Therefore, we applied critical state soil mechanics to study the stress–strain behaviour of the luvisols using triaxial tests under laboratory conditions. Field investigations involved random collection of undisturbed soil samples which were subjected to triaxial testing first by isotropic consolidation and compression and then triaxial shearing. Plots of deviatoric stress against axial strain were made to determine the soil shear strengths at the critical states over different soil water levels and the two soil depths of 0–20 cm for the plough and 20–40 cm for the hard pan layers, respectively. An exponential model used to fit the deviatoric stress–axial strain test data accurately predicted the trends. Soil water significantly influenced the shear strength, cohesion (c′) and internal angle of friction (′) and hence the mechanical behaviour of the luvisols. The regression equations developed showed that c′ and ′ have quadratic relationships with soil water. The very high clay bonding strength in the subsoil (hard pan) layer resulted in high shear strength, bulk density and penetration resistance values for this soil layer. The increase in shear strength with decreasing water content affected the deviatoric stress–axial strain relationships between the upper and lower plastic limits of the sandy soil. Thus, as the soil dried, the soil ceased to behave in the plastic (ductile flow) manner and thus began to break apart and crumble. The crumbling was indicative of brittle failure. The transition stage from an increase to a decrease in c′ and ′ values with soil water occurred in the soil water content range of 6–10%. Knowledge of stress–strain behaviour of compacting soils is of practical significance in the design of appropriate tillage tools for the specific soil type.

Summary Pot experiments were carried out to study the influence of bulk density (D b), soil water tension (pF) and presence of plants (spring wheat) on denitrification in a low-humus Bt-horizon of a udalf. Pots of only 5-cm depth were found to be most suitable for the experiments when using the acetylene inhibition method. Almost homogeneous soil compaction between 1.1 and 1.6g soil cm–3 was achieved by a Proctor tamper. Water tensions were adjusted by means of ceramic plates on which negative pressure was applied. No denitrification was detected in unplanted pots. With planted pots and increasing bulk density denitrification increased more in pots with 14-day-old plants than in pots with 7-day-old plants. With 14-day-old plants N2O emission pot–1 increased steadily from 2 mol at D b 1.1 to 8 mol at D b 1.6, when soil moisture was adjusted to pF 1.5, although root growth was impaired by higher bulk density. From an experiment with different bulk densities and water tensions it could be deduced that the air-filled porosity ultimately determined the rate of denitrification. When low water tension was applied for a longer period, water tension had an overriding effect on total denitrification. Denitrification intensity, however, i.e. the amount of N2O g–1 root fresh weight, was highest when low water tension was accompanied by high bulk density. The results suggest that the increase in denitrification intensity at oxygen stress is partly due to higher root exudation.

The Burns leaching equation
The simplicity and utility of Burns' leaching equation make it worthy of study. The equation may be written as where X is the fraction of initially surface-resident fertilizer leached below depth z by net rainfall I, in soil with a volumetric water content at ‘field capacity’ of θ. The equation is analysed using transfer functions. The analysis shows that Burns' equation is consistent with an ‘independent flow tube’ soil leaching model, rather than the soil solution being well-mixed at each soil depth as Burns suggested. The flux and resident soil solution soil concentration profiles are shown to be quite different. An alternative definition of θ is suggested. The behaviour of ‘a Burns soil’ for different initial and boundary conditions is discussed.

Traditionally, soil strength is estimated from uniaxial, confined compression tests by procedures adopted from classical soil mechanics. The heterogeneity of agricultural topsoil calls for an alternative approach. Undisturbed soil cores were collected in the plough layer of 14 soils in arable agriculture. Soil texture ranged from coarse sandy to silty loam soils with a maximum of 20% clay. The samples were drained to either of six matric potentials in the range from − 30 to − 300 hPa. Uniaxial, confined compression was applied to ∼800 kPa with strain-controlled stress application (1 mm min−1). Measured strain was fitted to stress by the Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF) model. The model fitted data remarkably well for all samples. Three fitting parameters of the model reflected physical characteristics of soil reaction to stress. The estimates of soil compressibility calculated from the model at 10 kPa (C10) correlated closely and linearly to the Cs index considered to reflect elastic deformation in classical studies of soil compression tests. Soil bulk density and content of soil organic matter decreased C10 as well as compressibility at 100 (C100) and 400 kPa (C400). A complex pattern in the effects of soil texture and soil moisture on compressibility was revealed. The pattern in strain-stress data is interpreted as a reflection of a gradual transition from elastic to plastic deformation of the mixture of structural units. The MMF model is suggested for interpretation of strain-stress data from uniaxial, confined compression tests. This implies use of stress in a linear scale.

The variability of gas diffusion in soil is not well known, but is important for assessing greenhouse gas emissions, soil decontamination, oxidation in soil and plant and root respiration. The goal of this study was to assess small‐scale variability of the relative soil‐gas diffusivity (Ds / Do, msoil air) using large intact soil monoliths and to compare Ds / Do calculation methods. Neon (Ne) was maintained constant at the lower boundary of three monoliths of two soils (a sand and an organic soil). Ne concentration was measured at large spatial and temporal frequencies. Calculation methods included the use of average concentration, and average Ds / Do per horizon, per section, or for the entire soil profile. Considering all sections of the monoliths, Ds / Do varied from 3.5 × 10−3 to 1.2 × 10−1 for the Ap horizon and from 4.8 × 10−3 to 8.3 × 10−1 for the Bf horizon in the sand and from 1.0 × 10−3 to 7.9 × 10−3 for the Ohp horizon and from 2.4 × 10−4 to 7.7 × 10−2 for the Of horizon in the organic soil. For the entire soil profile, variations in Ds / Do between monoliths reached 125% in the sand and 56% in the organic soil. The Ds / Do calculation method influenced the apparent variability (CV) of Ds / Do and, to a lesser extent, Ds / Do values of the overall soil profile. Differences in Ds / Do between monoliths could not be explained solely by the variability of total soil porosity and air‐filled porosity. Soil macroporosity (cracks and earthworm burrows) and layering greatly influenced variability of gas movement. Thus, the choice of sampling procedure, calculation method and modelling must be governed by the scale of the processes of interest and soil variability attributes.

Remediation of an uranium‐mine soil from Settendorf (East Germany) includes phytoextraction under conditions which make its heavy metals more plant‐available but less leachable. A second way is active inhibition of heavy metal uptake by the plant. In a pot trial with Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.), planted and unplanted soil samples were daily irrigated with deionized water or aqueous solutions with a total of (g (kg soil)–1) CaCl2 (0.26 Ca), NH4Cl (1.39), casein, sucrose, citric acid (13), and an extract of rape (B. napus L.) shoots (13 DW) in a phytotron for 26 d. Water‐irrigated plants were also treated with a 50 mM citric acid solution (10.5 g (kg soil)–1) 6 and 7 d prior to harvesting. Total elements in plant tissue and soluble elements in aqueous extracts from control and postharvest soils were determined by ICP‐AES. Supplements of NH , and the NH ‐generating casein and rape extract reduced soil pH during nitrification, and increased plant uptake of Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn. Citric acid at 50 mM adjusted soil to pH 4.5–6.0 and enhanced uptake of all elements. Long‐term application of sucrose and citric acid increased pH and inhibited uptake of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn. Contemporarily, leaching of heavy metals and humic substances was lowest with Ca and NH and highest with sucrose and citric acid amendments. It is concluded that Chinese cabbage grown for chelate‐assisted phytoextraction should be supplied with Ca and NH to obtain a high plant biomass on soil with a low hazard of leaching. Metal uptake should be stimulated by application of chelator 7 d prior to harvesting. Undesired uptake of heavy metals by Chinese cabbage determined as food should be inhibited with carbohydrate amendments. Long‐term application of NH or chelator, which reduces the solubility of certain elements but increases their uptake moderately, is recommended as a tool for continuous phytoextraction technologies.

The indiscriminate management and use of soils without moisture control has changed the structure of it due to the increment of the traffic by agricultural machines through the years, causing in consequence, a soil compaction and yield reduction in the areas of intensive traffic. The purpose of this work was to estimate and to evaluate the performance of preconsolidation pressure of the soil and shear stress as indicators of changes on soil structure in fields cropped with sugarcane, as well as the impact of management processes in an Eutrorthox soil structure located in Sao Paulo State. The experimental field was located in Piracicaba's rural area (Sao Paulo State, Brazil) and has been cropped with sugarcane, in the second harvest cycle. The soil was classified by EMBRAPA [EMBRAPA, 1999. Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Solos. Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos, Embrapa, Brasília, 412 pp.] as an Eutrorthox. Undisturbed samples were collected and georeferenced in a grid of 60 m × 60 m from two depths: 0–0.10 m (superficial layer – SL) and in the layer of greatest mechanical resistance (LGMR), previously identified by cone index (CI). The investigated variables were pressure preconsolidation (σp), apparent cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (). The conclusions from the results were that the SLSC was predicted satisfactorily from σp as a function of soil moisture; thus, decisions about machinery size and loading (contact pressures) can be taken. Apparent cohesion (c), internal friction angle () and the Coulomb equation were significantly altered by traffic intensity. The σp, c and maps were shown to be important tools to localize and visualize soil compaction and mechanical resistance zones. They constitute a valuable resource to evaluate the traffic impact in areas cropped with sugarcane in State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Mobilization of non‐exchangeable ammonium (NH ) by hyphae of the vesicular‐arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus Glumus mosseae was studied under controlled experimental conditions. Maize (Zea mays) and parsley (Petroselinum sativum) were grown either alone or in symbiosis with Glomus mosseae in containers with separated compartments for roots and hyphal growth. In one experiment, 15NH was added to the soil to differentiate between the native non‐exchangeable NH and the non‐exchangeable NH derived from N fertilization. Non‐exchangeable NH was mobilized by plant growth. Plant dry weight and N uptake, however, were not significantly influenced by mycorrhizal colonization of the roots. The influence of root infection with mycorrhizal fungus on the mobilization of non‐exchangeable NH was negligible. In the hyphal compartment, hyphal uptake of N resulted in a decrease of NH in the soil solution and of exchangeable NH . However, the NH concentration was still too high to permit the release of non‐exchangeable NH . The results demonstrate that, in contrast to roots, hyphae of VAM fungi are not able to form a non‐exchangeable‐NH depletion zone in the adjacent soil. However, under conditions of a more substantial depletion of the exchangeable NH in the mycorrhizal sphere (e.g., with longer growth), an effect of mycorrhiza on the non‐exchangeable NH might be found.

Phosphate diffusion coefficients (De) were determined by the quantity of P that diffused from a soil block with P addition into a soil block without P addition. To compare the results with theoretical concepts and to quantify the influencing factors, De was also calculated using the equation of Nye (1968). This equation takes into account the P diffusion coefficient in water, D1, the volumetric water content, θ, the impedance factor, f, and the buffer power, b, of the soil. The results show that De strongly depends on volumetric water content whereas the effect of bulk density on De values was relatively small. If the weighted average buffer power was used, calculated De values were in good agreement with measured values at higher soil moisture contents. At θ < 0.22 g cm?3 the measured values for De were smaller than the calculated. This effect is attributed to incomplete contact between the two soil blocks. The only small influence of bulk density on De is caused by the fact that bulk density affects both θ and b in a way which compensates each other.

Purpose

Urban soils’ variability in the vertical direction presumably affects hydrological parameters at the timescale. Moreover, horizontal soil alterations at small spatial scales are common in urban areas. This spatio-temporal variability and heterogeneity of soil moisture and the possible influencing factors were to be described and quantified, using data of a soil monitoring network in the city of Hamburg, Germany.

Materials and methods

Soil moisture data from ten observation sites within the project HUSCO was evaluated for two different years. The sites were located within districts with different mean groundwater table depths and characteristic urban soil properties. Soil hydrological simulations with SWAP were calculated for a selected site.

Results and discussion

The temporal evolution of soil water content and tension for the sites was very distinct, related to soil substrate, organic matter content, and groundwater table depth. Impacts of different vegetation rooting depths, the soil substrates’ type, and to some extent the degree of disturbance on soil water dynamics could be identified. An impact of groundwater table depth on the water content of the topsoil during low-precipitation periods could be assumed. The comparison of the results of soil hydrological simulations with empirical data indicated an overestimation of infiltration and percolation for the given soil substrates.

Conclusions

While soil properties are mainly determinant for the long-term progression of soil hydrology, local site factors affect the short-term regime. A shallow groundwater table contributes to more constant water dynamics while the relative decrease of water during a dry phase is diminished.

Structure and self-similarity in silty and sandy soils: the fractal approach
Soil structure was studied using the concept of fractals and related to soil texture and aggregate properties such as surface charges and aggregate stability. The mass and porosity fractal dimensions (Dm and Dp) of silty and sandy soils were determined on in situ soils using a variety of soil sections (thin, very-thin and ultra-thin), by image analysis on a continuous scale from m to 10?9 to 10?1m. Surface fractal dimensions (Ds) of these soils were determined on < 2 mm air-dried samples using mercury porosimetry and the fractal cube generator model. The results suggest that soils are not pore fractals but mass and surface fractals with Dm= 1.1 Ds when the dimension of the embedding Euclidean space d is 3. The soil structures could possibly be described by fractal diffusion-limited aggregation with complex interconnected aggregates or by fractal cluster–cluster aggregation models. As a preliminary conclusion, the fractal approach appears to be a potentially useful tool for understanding the underlying mechanisms in the creation or destruction of soil structure.
