Erratum

In the letter by M. F. Balandrin and J. A. Klocke (13 Sept., p. 1036), it was incorrectly stated that nabilone (Cesamet) has been approved for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration. Nabilone has not yet been approved by the FDA. The synthetic cannabinoid recently approved is in fact dronabinol (Marinol), a synthetic form of delta-9-tetra-hydrocannabinol. In the same letter, the affiliation of the authors should have been Native Plants, Inc., not Nature Plants, Inc. In the original article by Balandrin et al. (7 June, p. 1154), references 23 and 65 were incorrect. They should have been as follows: 23. Y. Aharonowitz and G. Cohen, Sci. Am. 245, 140 (September 1981); 65. D. E. Eveleigh, Sci. Am. 245, 154 (September 1981).

The report "Topography, albedo-temperature feedback, and climate sensitivity" by G. E. Birchfield and J. In an article by Colin Norman on research on AIDS vaccines, "AIDS virus presents moving target" (News and Comment, 20 Dec., p. 1357), it was stated that the official goal for getting a vaccine ready for general use has been put back to 2000. The plan, drawn up by the Department of Health and Human Services, in fact sets the goal of "eliminating transmission of HTLV-III infection" by 2000 and assumes that "It is unlikely that a vaccine or therapy to substantially limit transmission will be generally available before 1990."

Because of a printer's error, a line was dropped from the letter by Robert W. Berliner (16 Mar., p. 1066). The third sentence in the third paragraph should have read, "Schools of medicine have large fixed costs that do not vary with the number of students...."

The clause should be inserted on page 667, third column, line 31, as follows: "[. . . respectively,] at t = t(0), but subsequently we would like the gradient in the z direction to be maintained, and thus require [see equation in pdf] at z = 0 and z = d, for all times (radiation boundary conditions). [ The number. . .]."

In the report "Peroxisomal defects in neonatal-onset and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophies" by S. Goldfischer et al. (4 Jan., p. 67), the first sentence of the abstract should have read: "Accumulation of very long chain fatty acids in X-linked and neonatal forms of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) appears to be a consequence of deficient oxidation of very long chain fatty acids, a function that has been attributed to peroxisomes."

In the report "Long-term synaptic potentiation in the superior cervical ganglion" by T. H. Brown and D. A. McAfee (12 March, p. 1411), equation 2 and the following lines should read: [See equation in the PDF] where [See equation in the PDF] is the early, rapidly decaying component and [See equation in the PDF] is the slowly decaying, long-term component.     

Erratum

In Gina Kolata's article "Avoiding the schistosome's tricks" (Research News, 18 Jan., p. 285), Schistosoma mansoni and S. japonicum were inadvertently interchanged in the first full paragraph of the first column on page 286. Schistosoma japonicum lives in the mesenteric veins of the upper (small) intestine, and S. mansoni lives in the mesenteric veins of the lower (large) intestine.

On page 1426 of the report "Association of parvoviruses with rheumatoid arthritis of humans" by R. W. Simpson et al. (30 Mar., p. 1425), a portion of the text beginning on line 18 of the first full paragraph in column 3 was incorrectly printed. It should have read, "We were unable to detect 24-nm particles in brains of normal mice from our colony or mice intracerebrally inoculated with extracts of synovial cells from patients with noninflammatory degenerative joint disease (DJD). More conclusive evidence for the identity of RA-1 as a parvovirus comes from our recent success in demonstrating that CsCl gradient fractions containing the infectious 24-nm particles can be extracted for a single-stranded DNA which is approximately 4.5 kilobases in size."
