In the period October 1996 through December 2000, a total of 7163 pooled faecal samples of laying hen and broiler flocks, finishing-pig herds and veal herds were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp. and verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 as part of a national monitoring programme in The Netherlands. Isolates were tested for eae and VT genes. Risk factors for Dutch veal herds were quantified. For all herd/flock types, faecal samples were cultured for E. coli O157. Of broiler flocks, laying flocks and finishing pig herds, respectively, 1.7%, 0.5% and 0.4% were E. coli O157 positive. In total, 42 of the 454 veal herds (9.3%) showed at least one positive pooled sample. E. coli O157-positive herds were compared (with logistic regression) to negative herds, regarding variables obtained from the questionnaire taken from the farm manager. To account for season, a sine function was included in the logistic regression as offset variable. In the final model, 'pink-veal production' (compared to white-veal production), 'group housing of the sampled herd' (compared to individual housing), 'more than one stable present' (compared to one stable present), 'hygienic measures regarding visitors' (compared to no hygienic measures), 'interval arrival-sampling of a herd of >20 weeks' (compared to < or =10 weeks), and 'presence of other farms within 1 km' (compared to no presence of farms <1 km) showed associations (P<0.05) with the presence of E. coli O157. These results need careful interpretation; they should be considered as indications for further (experimental or cohort-based) research rather then causal associations.  相似文献

Veterinarians working in several Virginia, USA counties noticed an increase in clinical salmonellosis in cattle herds during 1994. We conducted a case–control study to identify potential risk factors for salmonellosis in cattle herds in this region. The potential impact of exposure to poultry-related factors was of particular interest because of the close proximity of poultry and cattle operations in this part of the state. Information was collected from 23 case farms and 23 control farms matched by herd veterinarian, type of enterprise (beef vs. dairy), and location. Faecal and environmental samples were collected during herd visits for bacteriologic culture.

Salmonella was isolated from 4.7% of 531 faecal, feed, water, and environmental samples collected. Salmonella Typhimurium was the serotype found most frequently in clinical cases in participating herds and from samples collected during study visits. Case herds had a higher percentage of study samples positive for Salmonella. Potential risk factors were screened using methods for pair-matched data and then analyzed in individual conditional logistic-regression models to estimate odds ratios with 95% profile likelihood confidence intervals. Significant factors included: the number of mature cows in the herd (OR=1.01; CI 1.00, 1.03), percent change in the number of mature cows during 1994 (OR=0.68; CI 0.11, 0.96), having calves usually born in a building rather than outdoors (OR=0.17; CI 0.01, 0.98), poultry manure spread on bordering property (OR=4.00; CI 1.00, 26.50), signs of rodents in cattle-housing or feed-storage areas (OR=2.75; CI 0.94, 9.92), and contact of wild geese with cattle or feed (OR=4.5; 1.16, 29.51).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of bacterial, mycoplasmal and viral pathogens in the lower respiratory tract of calves in all-in all-out calf-rearing units. According to clinical status, non-medicated calves with and without respiratory disease signs were selected of the 40 herds investigated to analyse the micro-organisms present in healthy and diseased calves. Tracheobronchial lavage (TBL) and paired serum samples were analysed for bacteria, mycoplasmas, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus 3 (PIV3), bovine corona virus (BCV) and bovine adenovirus (BAV). Pasteurella multocida was the most common bacterial pathogen. It was isolated from 34% of the TBL samples in 28 herds and was associated with clinical respiratory disease (p < 0.05) when other pathogenic bacteria or mycoplasma were present in the sample. Mannheimia spp. and Histophilus somni were rarely found. Mycoplasma bovis was not detected at all. Ureaplasma diversum was associated with clinical respiratory disease (p < 0.05). TBL samples from healthy or suspect calves were more often negative in bacterial culture than samples from diseased calves (p < 0.05). No viral infections were detected in six herds, while 16-21 herds had RSV, BCV, BAV or PIV3. In the herds that had calves seroconverted to BCV, respiratory shedding of BCV was more frequently observed than faecal shedding. This study showed that the microbial combinations behind BRD were diverse between herds. M. bovis, an emerging pathogen in many countries, was not detected.  相似文献

The outbreaks of classical swine fever in 1997-1998 and foot- and mouth-disease in 2001 provided a lot of experiences in the culling of animals. These experiences, as well as the aspects of animal welfare and public acceptance are described. Mycoplasmal bovine mastitis is potentially a highly contagious disease that can cause severe economic problems in affected herds. The purchase of replacement heifers and cows are frequently the origin of mycoplasmal mastitis outbreaks in previously Mycoplasma-free herds. Purchased cows and heifers should be quarantined and tested for mycoplasmal mastitis before admission to the regular herd. Detection of Mycoplasma-infected cows by culture of milk is straightforward, although there are problems of sensitivity for its detection in milk samples that are inherent to the nature of the disease and laboratory procedures. After detection of infected cows, the best way to protect the herd is to culture all cows in the herd, cows with clinical mastitis, and all heifers and cows after calving and before entering the milking herd. Control of mycoplasmal mastitis requires test and culling from the herd of Mycoplasma-positive cows if possible. When a large number of cows are infected, strict segregation with adequate management is an option; however, animals in this group should never re-enter the Mycoplama-free herd. The functioning of the milking equipment and milking procedures should be evaluated carefully and any flaws corrected. There is no treatment for mycoplasmal mastitis, and vaccination has not proven to be efficacious to prevent, decrease the incidence, or ameliorate the clinical signs of mycoplasmal mastitis. Waste milk should not be fed to calves without pasteurization. M bovis may cause several other pathologies in animals of different ages on a farm, including pneumonia, arthritis, and ear infections. The survival of mycoplasmas in different farm microenvironments needs to be further investigated for its impact on the epidemiology of the disease.  相似文献

Sow removal in Swedish commercial herds   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The objective of this study was to describe the sow removal pattern in Swedish commercial piglet producing herds, with group-housing of non-lactating sows. The data collection, based on a PC herd monitoring program used in 21 piglet producing herds in the south-central part of Sweden, was prospective, started in 2002 and continued for 3 years. During this period, information on 14 234 removed sows was recorded. For all parameters studied a large variation between herds was found. The average annual removal rate was 49.5% (range 33.6–66.3%). Among the removed sows, 85.2% were sent to slaughter, 10.5% were euthanised and 4.3% were found dead. The most common removal reasons were ‘reproductive disorders’ (26.9%), ‘old age’ (18.7%) and ‘udder problems’ (18.1%), followed by ‘low productivity’ (9.5%), ‘lameness and/or foot lesions’ (8.6%) and ‘traumatic injuries’ (7.1%). The proportion of sows sent to slaughter was higher than the proportion euthanised for all categories of removal except ‘traumatic injuries’ (in which 81.6% of the sows were euthanised). The average parity number at removal for all sows was 4.4. Lowest average parity numbers were found for sows removed due to ‘traumatic injuries’ (2.6). Among removed sows, the proportion removed per parity decreased up to parity 6. Sows removed due to ‘old age’ had the highest piglet production, while sows removed due to reproductive disorders had the highest number of non-productive days (NPD) per parity and the longest interval from last farrowing to removal. With increasing removal parity number, the number of piglets produced increased and NPD decreased. In lower parities (1–3) most sows were removed due to ‘reproductive disorders’, but this proportion fell as parity number rose. Removals due to ‘udder problems’ were most frequent in medium parity numbers (4–6). Most sows removed after parity 7 were removed due to old age. The proportion of the sows found dead was highest just after farrowing; otherwise only a low percentage of sows were removed during the lactation period. The proportion of euthanised sows was high in the week after farrowing and during the 4-week period following weaning. The proportion of sows sent to slaughter increased considerably 4 weeks after farrowing (i.e. after weaning) and stayed high during the subsequent 3 weeks. The study revealed a considerable amount of unplanned removal of young sows. Not only the sows sent to slaughter, but also those euthanised and found dead, must be included in studies on sow removal.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP) and lactation and health status. Blood samples were collected every 2 wk for 12 mo from 29 randomly selected dairy cattle on 3 farms. At the time the blood samples were collected, the stage of pregnancy, lactation status, breeding records, general health condition, reproductive status, and body condition score were recorded for each cow. Serum CRP was detected with sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and western immunoblotting. C-reactive protein levels were measured with a densitometer and expressed as an optimal dose value. C-reactive protein levels were correlated with the body condition score, lactation status, and animal health (P < 0.05), but not with ambient temperature, animal age, or parity. C-reactive protein levels increased with milk production, peaking during high lactation (2 to 4 mo of pregnancy), and decreased when lactation ceased. In addition, the CRP level was highest during naturally occurring infections, such as mastitis and other tissue inflammation. Thus, the CRP level can confirm the presence of inflammation. The stress effect of taking blood samples as measured by the CRP level, was also examined. The CRP level became rapidly elevated 12 h after the blood samples were taken but returned to normal 36 h later. In conclusion, the stresses resulting from overall poor health, heavy lactation, and blood sampling caused the elevation of serum CRP. C-reactive protein is a marker or tool for evaluating the health status of a herd. C-reactive protein should also be considered as a useful criteria to assess the stress levels and may be useful in early surveillance of disease conditions in a dairy herd.  相似文献
