Objective– To describe the medical and surgical management of a unique case of barium sulfate aspiration pneumonia in a dog. Case Summary– A 5‐year‐old spayed female black Labrador Retriever weighing 33 kg was presented for evaluation of barium aspiration pneumonia. Approximately 200 mL of barium had been instilled into the caudal lung lobes via an improperly placed orogastric tube. Right caudal, right middle, and accessory lung lobectomies were performed, and the dog was managed intensively for 19 days in the hospital. New or Unique Information Provided– This is the first report of a complete diagnostic work‐up including bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, culture, thoracotomy, and pulmonary histopathology for severe barium sulfate aspiration in a dog with an excellent outcome.  相似文献

Objective – To describe a severe case of bacterial sepsis and disseminated candidiasis in a previously healthy dog.
Case Summary – Fungal sepsis was identified in a 2-year-old dog following intestinal dehiscence 4 days after abdominal surgery. Septic peritonitis was identified at admission and evidence of dehiscence at the previous enterotomy site was found during an exploratory laparotomy. Both gram-positive cocci and Candida albicans were cultured from the abdominal cavity. Candida sp. was also subsequently cultured from a central venous catheter. Euthanasia was performed due to failure to respond to therapy. Fungal organisms, morphologically consistent with Candida spp., were found in the lungs and kidney on postmortem histopathologic examination indicating disseminated candidiasis.
New or Unique Information Provided – Candida peritonitis is a well-recognized entity in humans and contributes to morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Abdominal surgery, intestinal perforation, presence of central venous catheters, and administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics are all considered to be suspected risk factors. This report describes the first known case of systemic candidiasis occurring secondary to Candida peritonitis and bacterial sepsis in a critically ill dog.  相似文献

Central nervous system (CNS) complications of bacterial otitis media/interna are an infrequent occurrence in human patients and have rarely been reported in the veterinary literature. Early recognition of CNS involvement and the use of appropriate diagnostic tests to characterize the nature of the lesion(s) are crucial in determining the best course of treatment. In this paper, the authors describe a dog with bacterial meningoencephalitis secondary to otitis media/interna.  相似文献

This is a report of mandibulo-zygomatic arch synostosis in a dog 7 mo after trauma to the maxilla. Advanced diagnostic imaging was considered essential for characterization of the condition and treatment planning. Surgical excision of the bony proliferation and physiotherapy resulted in improved function within 6 wk.  相似文献

A four-year-old boxer presented with a recent history of intermittent collapse. The dog was found to have dysrhythmias and conduction abnormalities which were attributed to the presence of aortic bacterial endocarditis. These dysrhythmias and conduction abnormalities resolved following antibacterial treatment of the endocarditis. Specific antiarrhythmic therapy was not required. The short term response to therapy was good. The long term prognosis remains guarded in view of the damage the aortic valve has undergone.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old male Golden Retriever was evaluated because of an 8-week history of intermittent diarrhea with melena and hematochezia that were not responsive to medical treatment and resulted in severe anemia. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Exploratory celiotomy with intestinal and colonic biopsy revealed mild enterocolitis but did not result in diagnosis of the cause of melena and hematochezia. Endoscopy of the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract and colonoscopy were performed. Multifocal areas of coalescing, tortuous mucosal blood vessels were observed in the cecum and all regions of the colon. A diagnosis of vascular ectasia (VE) was made on the basis of the endoscopic and histologic appearance of the lesions. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: An ileorectal anastamosis was performed. Melena and hematochezia resolved within 3 days after surgery, and the anemia resolved within 6 weeks after surgery. Surgical resection of the cecum and colon and feeding of a highly digestible diet resulted in long-term (22 months) resolution of clinical signs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Initial exploratory celiotomy with intestinal and colonic biopsy failed to reveal the VE lesions responsible for the melena, hematochezia, and anemia. Endoscopic evaluation was necessary for detection of the colonic VE lesions. Surgical resection of the cecum and colon and feeding of a highly digestible diet may result in a favorable outcome in affected dogs.  相似文献

Definitive diagnosis of mitral and aortic valvular endocarditis in a dog was based on echocardiograpic findings and was then confirmed by positive blood culture. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed a renal abcess. This case illustrates that echocardiography associated with abdominal ultrasound has become an essential tool for the diagnosis of bacterial endocarditis and for the detection of sequela or initial source of bacteriemia, while waiting for blood culture results. A short review of echocardiographic and Doppler abnormalities associated with bacterial endocarditis is presented.  相似文献

A 2.5-year-old dog with signs of weight loss, vomiting, and hepatic encephalopathy was diagnosed with a patent ductus venosus, based on serum biochemical analysis, jejunal portography, and biopsies, and treated with lactulose, antibiotics, and a reduced protein diet. Two years after initial presentation, the dog is still being managed medically.  相似文献

A 4-day-old, male, American paint foal was presented for abdominal distention, respiratory distress, and diarrhea. Bladder rupture and uroperitoneum were diagnosed following abdominal ultrasonography and abdominocentesis. The defect in the dorsocranial part of the bladder wall was surgically repaired.  相似文献

A 4-year-old German Shepherd was evaluated for progressive depression, lethargy, anorexia, and dyspnea. Despite treatment with diuretics and antibiotics, the dog died. Based on clinical, radiographic, and pathologic findings, the diagnosis was heart failure resulting from aortic valvular endocarditis.  相似文献

Gerbode type defects are rare left ventricular outflow tract–right atrial communications in people that may be congenital or acquired; they have been reported only once previously in dogs. Acquired forms in humans have been reported secondary to bacterial endocarditis, trauma, and valve replacement surgery, among other causes. We report a case of left ventricular outflow tract to right atrium and right ventricle communications (Gerbode type defect) in association with aortic and tricuspid valve bacterial endocarditis in a geriatric dog. The dog also developed third degree atrioventricular block and had underlying subaortic stenosis. The authors hypothesize that the Gerbode type defect in this case was acquired secondary to invasion and destruction of the membranous interventricular septum due to bacterial endocarditis.  相似文献

The clinical, haematological and pathological features of a case of chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL) associated with valvular bacterial endocarditis are described in a nine-year-old male Springer Spaniel. The disease was characterized clinically by lethargy, weight loss, hepatosplenomegaly, anaemia and leucocytosis. Severe thrombocytopenia resulted in preretinal and retinal haemorrhages. A diagnosis of CGL was based on the finding of a hypercellular bone marrow with increased M: E ratio and morphologically abnormal myeloid precursors. The dog terminally became leucopenic and bacteraemic. Necropsy revealed invasion of liver, spleen and bone marrow with a pleiomorphic population of myeloid blast cells, consistent with transition to a blast cell crisis.  相似文献

A 4-year-old, male Newfoundland cross was presented for lethargy, anorexia, and dysuria. The main clinical finding was an enlarged and painful prostate gland. While the dog was hospitalized, priapism developed. Following euthanasia, microscopic examination revealed that a carcinoma involving both bladder and prostate gland had widely metastasized to the penile vasculature.  相似文献
